P&O's brand new ship Arvia joins the fleet in December 2022 and is heading for the sunshine

P&O Cruises' second Excel-class ship and follow up to Iona will be named Arvia and debut in December 2022 with a host of new-to-the-line features. Work began on the 184,700-tonne ship at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, in February 2021.  Arvia will be powered by Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG).

Arvia joins her sister ship, Iona, to make the sea the star with her luminous, wide-open spaces. Meaning ‘from the seashore’, her name encapsulates the magic of sailing from different coastlines to new waters and sunshine destinations. Arvia’s unique name reflects the innovative quality of their new Excel class of ships. Her modern and expansive designs offer incredible panoramas from her Grand Atrium, pools, bars and restaurants to her opening SkyDome. So you can drink in the sunshine while gazing out upon glimmering waters and idyllic islands as they emerge on the horizon. From the moment you step on board Arvia, the extraordinary travel experiences begin.

Get ready to feel revitalised from top to toe at the Oasis Spa and Health Club. Their well-being facilities on the new ship include two VIP Couple Suites, a therapeutic cool room and a restorative salt sauna

The 5,200-passenger ship is structurally identical to Iona, though Arvia will offer a number of new features and venues. These include a 54m-high ropes course called Altitude Skywalk that will offer two different experiences; a swim-up bar and a new restaurant concept, Green & Co featuring Mizuhana, offering a plant-based and fish menu with a sushi bar.

Arvia will also feature another first for the line: Altitude Minigolf, a nine-hole course located below Altitude Skywalk. The swim-up bar will form part of an infinity pool with uninterrupted wake views. We also know that Arvia will feature the 970-sqm SkyDome that debuts on Iona, to offer a day-to-night venue for relaxing and entertainment, with a pool and stage featuring aerial performances, movies on SeaScreen and theatre productions.

For delicious American dining head over to the 6th Street Diner. The perfect venue for friends and family to enjoy the fun and laid-back vibe featuring retro-styled seating and a juke box

From chilling over milkshakes and tasty all-American favourites at 6th Street Diner to savouring a dinner date complemented by fine wine and flawless service at Epicurean, Arvia boasts a truly varied offering of more than 30 places to eat and drink on board. There’s something to suit every occasion and mood, and to give you flexibility and convenience, you can choose when and where to eat at any of the restaurants. At Green & Co feat. Mizuhana, P&O Cruises celebrate difference and deliver delicious. Let them take your taste buds on a journey over land and sea as you sample plant-based dishes that will alter perceptions, along with the freshest and most beautiful sushi plates. Joining the line-up of eateries at the sociable dining hub The Quays is newcomer Roast, where you’ll find mouth-watering Sunday lunch meats irresistibly packaged in a jumbo Yorkshire pud. And at 6th Street Diner, grab a seat and take in the spirit of the classic all-American diner. They’ve got great music, ice-cold cocktails and deeelicious soul food, all served up with some good ol’ American hospitality. Their Local Food Heroes have been working their magic, too. Celebrated Spanish chef José Pizarro brings a taste of sunshine to his special Celebration Night menu at The Olive Grove. On Mediterranean holidays, he also offers a sensational tapas menu at The Glass House and a fiesta of Spanish street food at Taste 360. On Caribbean holidays, you won’t want to miss the queen of Caribbean cooking Shivi Ramoutar’s vibrant flavours at The Beach House (her Jerk Chicken Supreme is a must) and her colourful street eats at Taste 360. If you like your cocktails with a dash of cool glamour, check out the menu at the Amber Lounge in the Grand Atrium or head to The 710 Club, the live music nightspot created by Music Director Gary Barlow. And at The Limelight Club, wining and dining is served with lashings of A-list entertainment and fabulous live music. For those who want a more tranquil ambience, head for Anderson’s Bar, a traditional venue that houses Arvia’s unique copper still – try some of the artisanal Marabelle gin for the perfect summer cooler in the Med or, during the Caribbean season, the exclusive rum created in partnership with The Tidal Rum. Like her sister ship Iona, Arvia boasts a mix of dining venues that are unique to P&O Cruises Excel class ships together with all your fleet favourites. Enjoy the perfect gelato hit at Ripples, tuck into The Prime Minister burger at The Keel & Cow or indulge in contemporary Indian sensations at Sindhu – and let’s not forget the best night caps in the Crow’s Nest. For the ultimate holiday vibe, relax and raise a glass in one of the many deck bars, including the unforgettable swim-up bar experience of Infinity Bar.

Cool Cruiser

Does anyone know if the planned port stops in Palma for Arvia this summer are going to happen or not. We are due there in June but have not yet been notified of any port changes but I thought that Arvia will not be allowed to berth there due to passenger numbers ?

If anyone has had any notification of Palma being cancelled could you tell me which port has replaced it.

One ship with 5000 passengers allowed in port each day , two other smaller cruise ships. Arvia and MSC Seaview both in port the same day and MSC are embarking passengers there , Some cruises changed for Alicante , the others will be changed for that or Valencia possibly Malaga or overnight in Barcelona

Thanks

We are sailing on Arvia (departing 14th May) and are due to dock in Palma on the 19th but haven't received any notification of any change.

Not sure when they’ll change it but there are no exceptions to the rules for this year

If you are referring to the passenger quotas then I doubt they will change it and even more ports are joining in including Barcelona and most Norwegian ports.

I mean the itinerary changing as it will certainly have to change with the rules as they are now. Hopefully P&O confirm the itinerary change soon. MSC certainly won't be cancelled as Palma is a home port for Seaview

One of the other ships when we are due to call is Seaview, but P&O have recently added more shore excursions to 'My P&O'  😕

As ships that have booked a turn around day for the season must get priority P&O seem to have a problem

As Palma is Seaviews home port they always have preference. Arvia and Iona will not be allowed to berth at the same time no matter what P&O say or do.If P&O are still selling shore excursions then they have the money in their account getting interest....naughty naughty!

As far as I can see the only cruise to be affected is 30 April departure which has been changed to Alicante. All the others so far calling at Palma are still going. I do find it strange though, we are going later in the year and besides Arvia we have Seaview and Celebrity Apex in port, can't see it happening.

Arvia can't dock with Seaview in Palma, Celebrity Apex is smaller than 5000 passengers so is unaffected. P&O have to wait for the port to cancel the call

Like I said, can't see it happening along with the rest of the summer programme. Arvia is with Seaview most of the time.

Just a thought. If one of the ships is doing changeover. The passengers won't be in the town. They will be coming or going.

As has been intimated, P&O could be waiting for confirmation of any cancellation by the port authorities before they confirm any alternative arrangements.

But very few will be local so may stay a night or two before/after their cruise...

Only a minority, most will fly in and out on the changeover day.

P&O will be waiting for the port to confirm that they cannot fulfil the contract which they entered into, otherwise it’s P&O cancelling and that costs them.

It doesn’t mean that P&O won’t already have backup plans in place.

Unfortunately the rules are quite clear and state one ship with capacity of 5000 or over , no exceptions

No doubt P&O would have booked the berth a couple of more years ago, but rules only changed in last couple of years and the Balearic Government has made it clear there will be no exceptions from this year onwards. I would suggest it’s not just P&O that will be affected.

OK - been talking to a few people.

Seaview is standard capacity 4,132 and max capacity 5,110.

Arvia is standard capacity 5,200 and max capacity 6,242.

Rules state max of three ships but only one over 5,000 pax. Seaview will not sail with more than 5,000 each cruise as ships don’t sail at 120%+ capacity cruise after cruise. However when she does, she has priority over Arvia given her home port status.

P&O can either restrict sales or change port. That largely will depend on how many berths are already sold.

So yes, they can both be in port together, under the right circumstances.

History of P&O Cruises

The story of P&O Cruises began in 1837 when the Peninsular Steam Navigation Company was founded by Brodie McGhie Willcox and Arthur Anderson. Originally operating as a mail and passenger service, the company’s inaugural voyage took place in the same year, with a paddle steamer sailing from London to Spain and Portugal.

Fast forward to 1840, and the Peninsular Steam Navigation Company merged with the Oriental Steam Navigation Company to form the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company (P&O). This merger marked a significant turning point for the company, as it expanded its operations to include routes to India , Australia, and the Far East.

Over the years, P&O Cruises continued to grow and innovate, cementing its position as a leading force in the cruise industry. It introduced modern steamships with enhanced passenger amenities, such as private cabins, dining saloons, and first-class lounges, offering passengers a new level of comfort and luxury.

During World War II, many of P&O Cruises’ ships were requisitioned by the British government for military use. However, after the war, the company bounced back, modernizing its fleet and resuming its passenger services.

In the 1970s, P&O Cruises underwent a transformation, shifting its focus to leisure cruising. The iconic ship Canberra, dubbed the “White Funnel” due to its distinctive exterior, was introduced in 1961 and became the flagship of P&O Cruises. This marked the beginning of a new era for the company.

In the following decades, P&O Cruises expanded its fleet and introduced new ships, each more luxurious than the last. The company embraced innovation, incorporating state-of-the-art amenities and facilities to enhance the passenger experience. P&O Cruises became synonymous with leisure travel, providing unforgettable vacation experiences to people from all walks of life.

In recent years, P&O Cruises has continued to evolve and adapt to changing consumer preferences. The company has focused on sustainability and responsible tourism, implementing environmentally friendly practices to minimize its impact on the environment.

Today, P&O Cruises operates a fleet of modern and elegant ships, offering a wide range of itineraries to destinations around the world. With a commitment to delivering exceptional service, luxurious accommodations, and exciting onboard experiences, P&O Cruises remains a trusted and highly regarded name in the cruising industry.

As P&O Cruises looks to the future, it continues to innovate and push the boundaries of what a cruise vacation can offer. With a rich history spanning over 180 years, P&O Cruises has a legacy of excellence and a vision for creating unforgettable memories for every passenger who steps on board.
