Director Vikram Kumar's 24, starring Surya in triple role, is the best science fiction and fantasy drama made in India after Mr. India .

Actor Suriya should be appreciated for his consistent efforts to stand out among his peers, who have been hanging onto the tried and tested formula of commercial a.k.a masala films just to survive another Friday at the box office.

In spite of having the largest and the most diverse film industry, films from the genres of science-fiction, superhero, and fantasy with high standard special effects are a rarity in India. When filmmakers attempt on such genres, movies either suffer from sub-standard special effects or poor writing. It is an another rarity to see a filmmaker get this both factors straight and right.

Director Vikram Kumar's 24 , starring Surya in triple role, is the best science fiction and fantasy drama, involving a watch, made in India since Mr. India. The director hasn't been ambitious with computer graphics, he has made a minimal but very effective use of them and keeps audience invested in the film with witty and engaging storytelling.

It is 1990 and Sethuraman (Suriya), an Indian scientist, has just finished inventing a watch that allows its owner to travel back and forth in time. Before he could fully come to terms with his landmark invention and celebrate the success with his wife Priya (Nithya Menen) and infant son Mani, his megalomaniac twin brother Athreya (Suriya again), walks into his house and changes the course of the story.

In a series of twist and turns, Priya and Sethuraman are dead. Athreya is crippled and in coma. The baby and the device ends up at the hands of a stranger woman Satya (Sharanya).

It is 2016, Mani, is now 26-year-old and is a watch mechanic. The priceless creation of his father all these years remained locked up in small wooden safe-box as its key was lying at a clenched fist of Athreya. A fire incident at hospital, triggered by an eagle feather, wakes up Athreya from coma, who drops the key on the hospital floor, which eventually ends up at Mani's watch shop.

Mani opens the box and begins to learn the power of the device. Of million things he could possibly be doing with that device, he uses it to impress his love interest Sathya, played by Samantha Ruth Prabhu.

He freezes time, to alter his environment, rewinds the time back to re-engage in the same conversation with impressive responses. He even alters the outcome of a crucial cricket match between India and Sri Lanka. The chemistry between Mani and Satya is one of the highlight of the film. They both are charming and leaves you wanting for more of them onscreen.

On the other hands, Athreya hunts for the device and even tries to create one for himself. Following another series of twits and turns, Mani and Athreya come face to face just before the interval. There is a small action sequence. At the end, Athreya empties his handgun into Mani and chops off his hand along with the watch.

However, Athreya learns that he can only time travel and change events that happened in last 24 hours and can't go beyond it. So he plans to 'unkill' Mani and trick him into modifying the watch that would enable him to travel 26 years back in time and fulfill his ambition.

Whether Athreya succeeds or not in his evil play makes the rest of the film.

Director Vikram has built an interesting premise for a sci-fi movie with dollops of fantasy and commercial elements. The romance between Suriya and Samantha is charming, funny and refreshing. Sharanya leaves a mark as an innocent single mother.

Suriya has tried to show variation among his three characters. His performance as Athreya stands out among the pack.

There are no forcefully injected songs in the film. Music by A.R. Rahman coupled with beautiful locales in the songs, has worked in film's favour. Cinematography by Tirru is another plus for the movie.

Overall, 24 as a film is far from perfect. But Suriya's charming and witty performance encourages you to overlook all other shortcomings and logical follies. It is a movie you won't regret watching this summer.

Film: 24 Director: Vikram Kumar Cast: Suriya, Sharanya, Samantha, Nithya Menen Rating: 3/5

suriya24-movie-review

Underneath the dark and elusive cloak of a science fiction narrative, director Vikram Kumar has amassed all things that enamour the Tamil audience, from romance to despicable villainy, the time cherished twin brother strife to a comely son who rediscovers lost legacy.

The opening shot is a beautifully set up bungalow in 1990, where Sethuraman (Suriya), a scientist, is on the last phase of his incredible invention, amid the amiable banter of his wife Priya (Nithya Menen) and his baby. There's enough happiness on screen that act as a natural celluloid catalyst for trouble. Enter, twin brother Athreya (Suriya again) and what follows is textbook Tamil cinema. A safe secret with the baby that manages to escape death, with parents sucked into the sleepy hollows of time.

suriya-24-movie-review2

A flurry of coincidental events later, the key to the invention falls into the hands of the survivor son, Mani, 26 years later. He, of course, takes his time to get to the hot zone, instead finds his love, runs between the hands of the clock, turns time around for his little benefits. However, the inevitable has to happen—the devil has to meet the angel. After yet another series of complexly worked out strategy by the bad guy, things start evolving into a full fledged sci-fi drama.

What's commendable is a novel idea that engages the viewer even after pushing through three songs before the film has hit mid point. The romance, despite playing up the time travel concept, digresses for a little longer than is required. Once after the break point, the imaginative elements, the foremost functionaries in fantasy stories start to unfold. It's then, a pleasure to watch how the story is designed to pass through the time tunnel, back and forth.

suriya-24-movie-review3

The clinch is the climax, where the germ of the idea, sprouts vily hands that reach out to turn around, not just the clock, but foreseeable future, history and space. Even though the balance between a high functioning time travel system and tiny missing parts and loopholes in the story is under threat, the situation is saved by a relatively non-complex story that focuses on keeping the viewer guessing. The director has smartly picked out an age-old story of revenge and reinvented it, knocking it out of shape to fit his time travel module.

Suriya is credible as Sethuraman, Athreya and Mani. He plays the characters across a span of 26 years and is probably the only face that'll be doggedly sticking to mind after the film. That Samantha hasn't a groundbreaking role is obvious enough, but she manages to stay likable. Saranya is the pick of the lot, handing out the right measure of emotions.

24-movie

Rahman interludes are welcome. However, the routine placement of the songs are boring. The film is an art director's Disney world, for each element, whether anachronistic or not, is placed with utmost care to aesthetics, backed by great cinematography by Tirru.

Pitching in a lot more than what is needed into the arena, would time and tide taking a hike in 24  be worth the effort? If only we could really step into the future!

Onmanorama rating: 3.25/5

12 Best Suriya Movies You Must See

Ayush Manoharan of 12 Best Suriya Movies You Must See

Born to star parents, it was only a matter of time before he himself became a star. And star he did become. Born as Sivakumar and rechristened Suriya by none other than Mani Ratnam, Suriya was destined to be a star. The path though was anything but easy, from being ridiculed for his height to suffering from a lack of confidence Suriya overcame it all and today is one of the most talented actors in world cinema. In 40 movies over a career spanning 2 decades, Suriya has enthralled everyone with numerous performances.

With that said, here is the list of top Surya films, carefully selected from his vast filmography. You can also stream some of these Suriya movies on Netflix or Amazon Prime.

12. Nandha (2001)

After 4 unproductive years, Suriya announced himself with his subtle portrayal of a juvenile convict who wants a second chance at life and also yearns for his mother’s love. Even while sharing screen space with a stalwart like Rajkiran, Suriya holds his own and this made everyone take notice of the actor that Suriya was. Bala’s realistic portrayal of a convict’s struggles coupled with Suriya’s terrific acting gives us a film that will be etched in our memories for a long time.

11. Pitamagan (2003)

Bala once again brings out the actor in Suriya in ‘Pitamagan’. Till then Suriya had always been accused of not being natural in front of the camera, but in ‘Pitamagan’ we see a Suriya who has broken all shackles and acts like no one is watching. You know you can act well if people notice you even when you are sharing screen space with none other than Vikram, and that is exactly what Suriya does. Deservedly Suriya won his first Filmfare award for this movie.

10. 24 (2016)

Time travel movies are a rarity in Tamil Cinema, equally rare is the same person playing three characters in a movie. ‘24’ is the beautiful amalgamation of these 2 rarities with Suriya playing a charming watch mechanic, a wacky scientist and a menacing villain with equal ease. Suriya single headedly carries this movie on his broad shoulders with the performance of a lifetime.

9. 7 am Arivu (2011)

Ace director A.R Murugadoss teams up with Suriya to bring us the forgotten story of an Indian saint named Bodhidharma who is credited with bringing Kung fu to China. Playing dual roles Suriya with his majestic looks perfectly fits the bill of a Prince turned Saint and at the same time his boyish charm gives life to Aravindh, a happy go lucky circus artist. Watch it because this is a story that everyone should know.

8. Kaakha Kaakha (2003)

The beginning of Director Gautham Vasudev Menon’s cop trilogy has Suriya playing an honest cop with great conviction. As part of a special team of encounter specialists, Suriya shoots down the head of a notorious gang. Now his brother is out for vengeance. Who comes out on top forms the rest of the story. With strong female characters and crisp dialogues, this is one of the better cop dramas in Kollywood.

7. Perazahagan (2004)

The title literally means ‘Someone with beauty in their name’. Quite ironic for a movie which has Suriya in dual characters with one of them playing a hunchback. ‘Perazhagan’ is refreshing in the way it treats the character with the hunch. Masking his deformity great with the hunch never feels like a deformity but in fact, leads to some very funny scenes. At the same time, Suriya as the college student is Swag personified. With a beautiful message, this movie will surely leave a smile on your face.

Related: Best Trisha Krishnan Movies

6. Vaaranam Aayiram (2008)

Even I didn’t know Suriya has played dual roles in so many movies before writing this article. Suriya teams up with Gautam Vasudev Menon to bring us a Father-Son story which has Suriya going through the ups and downs of life and how his father (also played by Suriya) guides him. Said to be inspired by the director’s own relationship with his father the movie has Suriya playing a scrawny teenager, A college student, A drug addict and finally an Army Officer. Talk about variations in a single movie! ‘Vaaranam Aayiram ’is truly a feather in Suriya’s cap.

5. Mounam Pesiyathe (2002)

Suriya plays Gautham, an angry young man with no interest towards love and breaks away from the happy go lucky characters he had been playing till then. This love story is a case of mistaken identities with a climax that is refreshing even by today’s standards. Although not perfect, a brooding Suriya and an evergreen soundtrack smother over the little flaws the film has.

4. Aaytha Ezhuthu (2004)

‘Aaytha Ezhutu ’ refers to the last letter of the Tamil alphabet which consists of 3 dots. These three dots symbolize the three main characters around which the story revolves.Mani Ratnam manages to put together an ensemble cast consisting of Suriya, Madhavan, and Sidharth among others. Suriya plays the leader of a youth organization which wants to enter politics. The obstacles he faces and how Sidharth and Madhavan get involved forms the crux of the story. Suriya lets his eyes do most of the talking and makes us go weak on our feet.

3. Ayan (2008)

Hitherto known for playing closer to life and realistic characters, ‘Ayan’ helped Suriya come out of the stereotype and established himself as a commercial star. Playing a suave conman with a not so suave dialect we just can’t take our eyes off Suriya whenever he is on screen and the slick screenplay makes sure our eyes are glued to the screen even if he is not on screen. Chartbuster songs, a thrilling cat and mouse game make ‘Ayan’ a complete package and one of Suriya’s highest grosser.

2. Singam (2010)

Suriya’s transformation as a commercial hero was complete when he starred in this Cop flick directed by Hari. Playing the titular role Suriya is a bundle of energy throughout the film and is the heart and soul of the movie. Hari manages to tell the struggles an honest cop faces while trying to get rid of thugs in the city. What looks like a dated story is brought to life by Suriya’s performance and Hari’s bullet train of a screenplay.

1. Ghajini (2005)

A remake of Christopher Nolan’s Neo noir Psychological thriller ‘Memento’ directed by A.R Murugadoss, ’Ghajini’ has Suriya playing a man suffering from anterograde amnesia who uses photos and tattoos to somehow find the men responsible for the death of his girlfriend. Sporting a buff look with a bald hairstyle Suriya has our sympathies as a confused patient and at the same time looks suave and sophisticated while playing a businessman. Unlike ‘Memento’ this film has a linear screenplay but Suriya’s performance never lets us take our eyes off the screen.

time travel movie surya

There is a lot going on in the trailer of Mark Antony – action, comedy, time travel and gangsters with ‘discipline’. Headlined by Vishal and SJ Suryah, Mark Antony is written and directed by Adhik Ravichandran .

The two-minute-fifty-second trailer begins with a line, “Welcome to the world of Mark Antony, bro,” as the makers give a solid glimpse into the film’s world, with striking visuals, stunning action sequences and colourful frames, all set to the foot tapping tunes of music composer GV Prakash Kumar.

time travel movie surya

Billed as period science-fiction action comedy, Mark Antony features Vishal in a double role of father and son. The film also stars Suneel, Selvaraghavan and Ritu among others. Mark Antony is produced by S Vinod Kumar.

The film is gearing to release worldwide on September 15. Mark Antony is an important film for both the star and the director. Filmmaker Adhik will hope to bounce back with the project after consecutive disappointments like Anbanavan Asaradhavan Adangadhavan and Bagheera.

Vishal, too, would hope to strike big with Mark Antony after consecutive mixed-bag features like Laththi, Veerame Vaagai Soodum and Enemy.

#MarkAntony HYPE has been HUGE🔥 I didn't realise the film would become this huge, damn. — BollywoodReviewer (@RayanBaig8) September 15, 2023

The film has become  IMDb’s most anticipated Indian film. Taking the second spot on the list is Leo, followed by Thank You For Coming, Salaar, Chandramukhi 2, Fukrey 3, Skanda: The Attacker, Mission Raniganj, Sukhee and The Vaccine War.

Sharing his excitement for the movie Vishal had earlier told ANI, "The South Indian film called Mark Anthony is already creating a big buzz. We have launched the Hindi trailer and are looking forward to releasing the movie on September 15th in other South Indian languages and the dubbed version will be released on September 22 in the Hindi language."

He added, "Mark Anthony is a science fiction and time travel film. It is a period film. It is interesting to see how it unfolds all the surprises. Even Surya sir is doing dual roles of father and son."

About Mark Antony, SJ Suryah said, "The film has a very challenging role because it includes dual roles and different timelines like 1995, 1965, and 1975. By changing the past we make changes in future too, so this is very challenging and interesting. Though it’s a dual role it feels like you are doing five roles".

Thx a lot for the great response all over world 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏 … 01/01/22 my tweet after hearing #MarkAntony story Narration from dir @Adhikravi sir (puratchi thalapathy @VishalKOfficial sir, @vinod_ sir)🥰🥰🥰Feeling happy movie making U all happy 🥰🥰🥰🥰love U all… https://t.co/v4Xz99Mqhp — S J Suryah (@iam_SJSuryah) September 15, 2023

Director Adhik Ravichandran said, "I always want to change a few things in my past so we couldn’t do that in real. So, I thought what If he gets a phone like this and you know changes that happened in past will reflect in future? That was the main idea of the movie then I brought into gangsters and all those things that will keep the audience entertained".

Mark Antony Review: Illogical Time Travel Concept

Mark Antony Review: Illogical Time Travel Concept

Movie: Mark Antony Rating: 2/5 Banner: Mini Studio Cast: Vishal, S.J.Suryah, Suneel, Selvaraghavan, Ritu Varma, Abhinaya, Kingsley, Y.G.Mahendran and others Music: G.V.Prakash Kumar DOP: Abinandhan Ramanujam Editor: Vijay Velukutty Art Director: R.K.Vijaimurugan Producer: S.Vinod Kumar Written and Directed by: Adhik Ravichandran Release Date: Sep 15, 2023

Vishal and SJ Suryah's dual roles, as well as the trailer for "Mark Antony," raised some expectations for this film.

Let’s find out its merits and demerits.

Story: Set in 1995. Mark (Vishal), a mechanic, believes that his father, Antony (Vishal), a ruthless gangster, murdered his mother. Jackie Marthand (SJ Suryah), his father's friend, raises him, and Mark begins to regard Jackie as a father figure.

Jackie, like Antony, has a son named Madan (SJ Surya). Madan also likes Mark’s girlfriend Ramya (Ritu Varma).

When Ramya asks Mark to repair her father’s car, he discovers a box inside. The box has a telephone, invented by a scientist Chiranjeevi (Selva Raghavan), which can connect to people from the past.

The rest of the story is about how this phone changes Mark's life and how he learns the truth about his mother's murder.

Artistes’ Performances: Vishal and SJ Suryah not only get to play dual roles, but they also appear in a retro style. While Vishal exhibits both negative and positive aspects of a role, his role as Antony is more colorful and interesting.

SJ Suryah, who was riveting in the recent time travel film "Manaadu," gets to play yet another eccentric villain. Surya's performance as both father and son steals the show. His portrayal of Jackie is superb.

Suneel is adequate in the role of Ekambaram. Ritu Varma’s role is more like a junior artist. Abhinaya asserts her presence.

Technical Excellence: The film boasts top notch production values. The production design and the background score by GV Prakash Kumar stand out

Highlights: Interval bang SJ Surya’s performance

Drawback: Silly proceedings Logic goes for a toss Over the top sequences

Analysis 'Mark Antony' stars Vishal and SJ Suryah in dual roles and is set in the science fiction genre. On the surface, the concept appears to be interesting. However, the fantasy film based on the time travel concept is taken to an extreme level, making it frustrating to watch after a point.

The film is entertaining towards the end of the first half, with the interval bang setting the real base. But the proceedings are no way convincing as everything happens as per the convenience of the screenplay.

Several rules and functions of the time-travel phone are revealed at the beginning of the film, but they keep changing.

Vishal appears as a villain in the beginning, and SJ Suryah appears as a good-natured gangster. Their true natures are revealed by the interval. Hence, we get to see Vishal in both negative and positive roles, as well as SJ Suryah as both a good guy and a menacing villain. Although the film's outlandish concept allows both of these actors to shine, with Surya in particular having the opportunity to steal the entire show, it is not engaging enough.

Even the episode with the Silk Smitha lookalike doesn't work very well. Though some lines here and there provide laughs.

The time-travel element, a couple of humorous episodes, and the setting are all highlights, but the story's wackiness and the erratic narration detract from the film's impact. Concise narration would have helped.

On the whole, "Mark Antony" is quite whacky and makes no sense. Despite its best efforts to offer something new to the time travel genre, the lengthy drama makes a tiresome watch.

Bottom line: Whacky

To avoid nepotism, he did not reveal himself to his boss as Sivakumar's son, but his boss ultimately learned the truth himself. He was initially offered the lead role by Director Vasanth in his film Aasai (1995), but he rejected the offer citing a lack of interest in an acting career. He later debuted in Vasanth's own 1997 film Nerrukku Ner, produced by Mani Ratnam when he was 22 years of age. The stage name Suriya was bestowed on him by Ratnam to avoid a clash of names with established actor Saravanan. This was followed by a series of roles in commercially unsuccessful films in the late 1990s. In 2001, he starred in Siddique's comedy film Friends, also co-starring Vijay, which became a super hit. His major break in acting came in the form of Nandha, which was directed by Bala. The film was written and produced by Suriya and also starred Vijay, Madhavan and Jyothika. Agaram sponsored 159 underprivileged students in 2010 for their higher education in various disciplines and has continued to provide free seats and accommodation for pupils. With the firm belief that the educated mind can not only eliminate social evils but also aid in the socio-economic upbringing of society, the Agaram Foundation works towards providing appropriate learning opportunities to the rural populace who do not otherwise have access to quality education. Followed by this, Suriya also did a Cameo in his brother, Karthi's film - "Kadaikutty Singham". In 2019, he partnered with Selvaraghavan for NGK - a political drama that received mixed reviews from the public and critics. His next release was Kaapaan, an action thriller, in which he shared the screen with Arya and Mohanlal. The movie was a commercial success and the final directorial venture of K.V. Anand before the filmmaker's demise on 30th April 2021.

2020 and 2021 marked the years Suriya worked on "Soorarai Pottru" and "Jai Bhim" with Sudha Kongara and T. J. Gnanavel respectively. Both these films were produced by his production banner 2D Entertainment. Soorarai Pottru was praised by the public, critics and film people. The movie went on to bag 5 awards at the 68th National Awards for Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Actor (Suriya), Best Actress and Best Original Score. Jai Bhim was lauded for its craftsmanship and the message it delivered to the society. In addition to bagging multiple awards, Jai Bhim which spoke about police brutality and bias towards Irular community, created a huge social impact. Jai Bhim was made available for screening at the 96th Academy Awards. In 2022, Suriya had his 1st theatrical release in 3 years with Etharkkum Thunindhavan collaborating with director Pandiraj. The film opened to mixed reviews and went on to be a success at the Box Office. The same year, he stepped into a new character called "Rolex" who appeared as a cameo in Vikram (2022) and this character became a fan favourite in no time. He also did a Cameo in R. Madhavan's, "Rocketry - The Nambi Effect"

Suriya is now working on Kanguva directed by Siva and is slated for release in 2024. Suriya has joined hands once again with Sudha Kongara and G V Prakash Kumar for his 43rd movie. The film team released a motion poster revealing only a part of the movie title.

Suriya is married to actress Jyothika, with whom he worked with in as many as seven films. The couple, after being together for several years, got married on 11 September 2006. They have two children, a daughter named Diya and a son named Dev.

In 2008, Suriya began the Agaram Foundation, working to help children who drop out of school early in Tamil Nadu. Suriya revealed that he was inspired to begin the movement as a result of his father's organisation, Sivakumar Educational Trust, which had been operating similar benefits on a smaller scale since the 1980s. With the Ministry of Education in Tamil Nadu, he created a short commercial video outlining child poverty, labour and lack of education, titled Herova? Zerova?. Through the foundation, he has also set up a platform for students to participate in workshops and improve communication skills, teamwork, goal setting and leadership.

Suriya and his family have also extended help towards the education of Sri Lankan Tamil children on behalf of the Sivakumar Charitable Trust. He is also an active participant in other humanitarian works such as the "Save The Tigers" campaign, which aids in the protection and preservation of Tigers in India, and "REACH", a non-profit that cures TB patients for free using supervised medication programs. The actor celebrates every birthday by doing charity work across Tamil Nadu.
