In Xinjiang, and Kashgar especially, you'll see how Central Asian peoples contrast with the Chinese Han majority further east. See the Uyghur minority's architecture, clothing, dancing, and customs.

There are other ethnic groups living in Xinjiang, but Islam has a great overall influence on social life in Xinjiang. Islam is believed in by more than 10 ethnic groups in Xinjiang, including the Uyghur, Kazakh, Hui, Kirgiz, Tajik, Uzbek, Tatar, Salar, Dongxiang, and Bao'an.

In addition to Islam, other major religions include Lamaism (Tibetan Buddhism), Buddhism, Christianity, Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy, and Shamanism.

North Xinjiang areas such as Urumqi, Altay, Turpan, and Ili are suitable for visiting from June to October.

South Xinjiang areas such as Kashgar, Hetian, and Aksu are suitable for visiting from August to October.

• Spring is best for appreciating apricot blossoms in Yili's Xinghua Valley and peach and apricot blossoms in Hetian, especially in April.
• Summer is best for natural scenery in North Xinjiang: lush and green grassland and pastures, crystal lakes, and beautiful lavender.
• Autumn is the most beautiful time in Xinjiang, especially in Kanas. You could have the experience of picking cotton.
• Winter is a good time to ski at the Silk Road International Ski near Urumqi and see the wonderful snowy scenery in Kanas. A Xinjiang winter trip is also highly recommended.

Flights and bullet trains are the main ways to travel to and around Xinjiang.

Most major China cities have flights to Urumqi (other cities in Xinjiang only have small airports), such as Beijing (4 hours), Shanghai (5 hours), Xi'an (4 hours), Chengdu (4 hours), Hangzhou (5 hours), and Guangzhou (5 hours). So many travelers take Urumqi as their first stop in Xinjiang.

If following the Silk Road through Gansu, which can be done by bullet train, Turpan would be the first stop in Xinjiang.

• Urumqi to Turpan: 1 hour's journey by bullet train
• Urumqi to Kashgar: 2 hours' journey by plane
• Urumqi to Altay: 1½ hours' journey by plane

Private transport: Xinjiang comprises one sixth of all of China, resulting in long distances between attractions. A private vehicle with your own private driver and guide helps a lot. You can stop where you want and enjoy flexibility and expert adaptability.

In Xinjiang's capital Urumqi, hotel conditions are best and options are most. In remote cities, such as Kashgar and Turpan, star-rated hotels might not be as good as the same rating of hotels in big cities due to local expectations.

To ensure a comfortable hotel experience, we suggest booking 4- or 5-star hotels. They can offer Western-style breakfasts as well as simple English communication.

When booking a hotel by yourself, please make sure the hotel is allowed to accept foreigners, and choose an area that is convenient/conducive:

• In Turpan, stay in the downtown area, such as Xihuanbei Road, Gaochang Road, Qingnian Road, lvzhou Road, and Wenhua Road.
• In Urumqi, stay in the city center, such as near Renmin Park and Hongshan Park.
• In Kashgar, accommodation in the downtown area is best.

Typical authentic Xinjiang meals include a lot of meat such as mutton, beef, and chicken. Islamic rules forbid alcohol and pork. A breakfast might include melons, fruit jam, and milk tea. Nangs, Uyghur flat bread like Indian naans, are commonly eaten with meals.

Do not miss the traditional Muslim yoghurt in Kashgar, juicy roasted skewers of meats, and the various Muslim rice dishes.

People traveling Xinjiang in autumn have the chance to try the sweet fruits of the region such as grapes, apricots, and Hami melons.

At Urumqi, Turpan, and Kashgar, visitors may be able to find "Western food", but in rural areas, you'd need to make do with local food.

Yes, Xinjiang is safe to visit. The Uyghur people are some of the most friendly you'll ever come across. Most visitors feel it is totally safe in the main tourist areas, though there may be an elevated police presence.

When you travel in Xinjiang, you should pay attention to these things:

Please do not talk about sensitive issues such as religion and politics.

Sixty percent of the total population of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region are minorities, and their primary belief system is Islam. Please respect their customs (e.g. no alcohol and modest dress) and follow your guide's advice when visiting a family or entering a mosque.

When visiting religious sites such as mosques, women should wear long–sleeve clothes. At certain times women are not allowed to enter mosques.

Taking photos at some attractions is forbidden. Please follow your tour guide's advice.

When you shop at a market, bargaining is taboo if you do not intend to make the purchase.

Take precautions against pickpockets and opportunist thieves.

Turpan - A Hot City with Ancient Civilization

Located in the central part of Xinjiang and 167 km to Urumqi, Turpan is another top destination. It is known as the Hottest City in China, and its historical highest temperature reaches 49.6°C. In addition to the highest temperature, it has the lowest altitude. The surface of Aiding Lake in Turpan is about 154.31 meters below Sea Level. Hotan (Hetian in Chinese pinyin) is located in the south corner of Xinjiang. Many travelers learn its name because of Hotan Jade (Nephrite Jade) which is a light-colored jade listed in Four Most Famous Jades in China. Bordering Tibet in the south and Kashgar in the west, it is a multi-ethnic area. Except for Uygur, there are Han, Hui, Kzak, Kigiz and many other ethnic groups, making it a wonderful city to explore the diverse culture of different groups. As you arrive in Hotan City, Hotan Museum must be a good idea to learn about the past of this city. Taklamakan Desert (Taklimakan Desert) is the largest desert in China and it covers about 20% of a total area of Xinjiang, equaling to the same size as Shanghai. Located in the center of Tarim Basin, it starts from Korla in the East, Kashgar in the west, Hotan in the South, and Aksu in the north.

There are two national roads - G217 and G216 crossing it. G217 is the famous Duku (Dushanzi-Kucha) Road, which passes through many beautiful tourist attractions (including Dushanzi Grand Canyon, Nalati Grassland, Bayanbulak Grassland, Tianshan Mystery Grand Canyon, etc.) and is known as Landscape Road Along the Spine of the Tianshan Mountains. G216, starting from Altay and reaching Baluntai Town in Bayingolin, is the other project to conquer the Desert of Death. Apart from Taklamakan Desert, it also passes through Gurbantunggut Desert. No matter which road you choose to drive on, you can get a wonderful journey across Taklamakan Desert.

With plenty of rainfall and humid weather, it is praised as the Wet Island in the Green Sea. The coverage rate of its grassland and forest vegetation reaches 67.7%. Visiting Ili in June ~ October, you will not only savor the captivating landscape, but also enjoy a buffet of fruits.

When speaking of Ili, many travelers may think of a painting with vast grasslands. Nalati Grassland , praised as grassland in the sky, is one of the most beautiful grasslands in China. With endless ridges stretching to the sky, Nalati Grassland gives you quite a different appearance from the flat grassland in Inner Mongolia. Changji has unique tourist resources attracting numerous visitors. The top attraction in Changji is Heavenly Lake of Tianshan Mountain (Tianchi)- a UNSCO World Natural Heritage site. The biggest highlight of Tianchi is its natural landscape consisting of lakes, snow peaks, forests, valleys, glaciers, etc. It is available to take a boat to closely see the crystal clean water or take a cable car to Mount Maya to catch a panoramic view of the lake and surrounding peaks. The most striking sight of Dushanzi Grand Canyon is the weathered mud sculpture on the cliffs on both sides of the river. If you travel to Karamay in October, don't miss Wu'erhe Populus Euphratica Forest which is just about 30 km away from Karamay City. Aksu (Kucha) - Another Cultural Center of Southern Xinjiang

Aksu is located at the southern foot of the Tianshan Mountains in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and the northern edge of the Tarim Basin. It is named after the Aksu River. The Aksu area not only has beautiful natural scenery, but also has a cultural landscape with ethnic characteristics. The "Quchi Ancient Kingdom" site in the 36 countries of the Western Regions is in Kucha (Kuche, Kuqa) - travelers' favorite destination in Aksu. The ancient Silk Road also passes through Aksu and many cultural heritage sites can be found here.

In Kucha, there are more than 50 historical & cultural sites. Kumurula Caves is a big Buddhist caves group dating from the 5th to the 11th centuries. There are 112 cave temples survived and the murals on the walls of the caves show both western style and local artistic style. Kucha Palace is the place where the last prince of the country lived. Here, visitors can get a glimpse of the prince's demeanor, and listen to the prince's story. Other historical sites include Qiuche Ancient City Ruins, Kucha Grand Temple, Ruins of Subashi Buddhist Temple, etc. The natural wonders in Kucha are also remarkable. Kucha Grand Canyon covered by reddish brown rock in various shapes is rather majestic and precipitous. Kizilya with the peculiar mountain peaks really shows the power of nature. In addition to Kucha, there are many other places to visit in Aksu, including Kizil Caves of the Thousand Buddhas - the Earliest Buddhist Grottoes in China, nearly 260 years earlier than Dunhuang Mogao Caves. There are 339 Buddhist caves preserved and 6 caves are open to tourists.

As an important town on the ancient Silk Road, Hami enjoys a long history and culture as well as attractive humanities and natural landscape. It combines the nature and climate of both Northern and Southern Xinjiang, and was praised as the Microcosm of Xinjiang. Hami is an oasis in the desert to taste sweet fruits (especially sweet cantaloupes and grapes) because of the long sunshine duration. Located in the eastern part of Xinjiang, it is also the gateway of inland China to Xinjiang. It is a classic tour from Lanzhou to Urumqi via Xining, Zhangye, Dunhuang, Hami and Turpan.

Xinjiang is renowned for its beautiful scenery of desert, Gobi, snow mountain, lake, forest, grassland, rural village, etc.

Galloping horses on the grassland and sing song aloud with dance. That is just the daily life of herdsman.

Southern Xinjiang 南疆 is featured in historical relics and culture. Cities like Kashgar 喀什, Khotan 和田, Aksu 阿克苏, Bayingol 巴音郭楞, Kizilsu and Kirgiz 克孜勒苏, as well as Kunlun Mountain 昆仑山, and Tarim Basin 塔里木盆地, all witnessed the vicissitude of Xinjiang in the past thousand years. When you come to southern Xinjiang, you will find the perfect combination of desert, Gobi and oasis with the diversified agricultural civilization.   Xinjiang Tourist Attractions:

1 . Heavenly Lake  -the Pearl of Tianshan Mountain. With melted snow as its source, snow mountains surround the crystal clear lake. The magnificent Bogda Peak mirrored in the lake, making the whole scenery be even more fascinating. Once arrived, you will feel like entering into a fairyland. Lake looks like a sapphire rimmed by diamond-like snow mountains.

2 . Ili - The beauties of nature. There is an old saying that we don't know how large China is until we reach Xinjiang; and we don't see the beauty of Xinjiang until we arrive at Ili. The scenery of Ili varies following the changing of seasons, which will surely fascinate you! Narati Grassland, Kalajun Praire, Huocheng Lavendor farm, and Xiata Valley are all the wonderful places dotted in the great Tianshan Mountain.

3. Gobi Desert - In Xinjiang, when you are driving through the deser highways, the most impressive scenes must be the desert and Gobi desert. Empty your mind and let the desolate desert bring you into a world of infinity and endlessness.

4. Kanas Nature Reservation Park . It is listed as one of the best destinations for traveling in China for its picturesque landscape. It is the home of Sibereian larches, spruces,firs and birches, snow leopard, stone marten, silver foxes, Altai Frogs, etc. Besides, the unique lifestyle of local Tuwa people is also quite amazing. It is said that Tuwa people are the offspring of the old,weak,sick and disabled soldiers left by Genghis Khan when he led the troops for westward expedition.

5. Sayram Lake.  It is regarded as the last drop of tears of the Atlantic. Strolling around the lake and swimming in the sea of wildflowers, you will witness what is the "sayram blue". Every year from May to October, The sapphire water of the lake seems to meet the sky in the distance. And the pasture is in a charming scene of flouring trees, waving grass, and wildflowers that are reflected in the clear water of the lake. You will have an unfogettable journey to have a night in the RV by the lakeside and ride a bicycle around the lake. 

6. Karakul Lake and White sand lake along the Karakoram Highway . Karakul Lake is on the lap of two giants, Muztagh Ata -  "the father of ice mountains" and Kongur reputed with more avalanche. It is one of the rarely seen highland lakes in the world. In a fine day, you can get a nice view of Muztagh Ata and the snow-capped peaks, flocks of animals, grassland are all clearly reflected in the water.  By the lake, there are yurts and restaurants for tourists to stop and stay overnight. You can also visit the local Kizil people and experience their nomadic life.

7. Poplar Forest. In mid-October every year, you will have a chance to see the splendid golden poplar forest if you come to Xinjiang. On the desolate desert, almost no life can survive. While poplar trees create miracle that they are not only survived, but even formed continous forest. We say that it is the spiritual symbol of Xinjiang people.

When Is the Best Time to Travel Xinjiang?

The best time to travel Xinjiang is from April to November. 

Depending on your preference, you will enjoy different scenes in different seasons and weathers. If you also love snowy days, then you will enjoy Xinjiang traveling all year round.

From March to May. Air temperature rises rapidly in southern Xinjiang, while changes not that dramatically in northern Xinjiang. So the flowering season in north is longer than south while the blossom is earlier in south. Lavender, rape flower field, apricot flower and peach flower are competing for blossom everywhere.             

From June to August. It is the season when fruits and melons are ripe and fragrant. Although Xinjiang is also a bit hot and dry in summer, the weather in the mountain area is really cool. For example, the Heavenly Lake is regarded as an excellent natural summer resort by the locals. Additionally, summer is also the golden season for sand therapy in Turpan and  experiencing the prairie culture in Ili.

From September to November. It is a lovely season when the hot summer recedes, and the cold waves have not come yet. Sky is clear and air is fresh with gentle breeze. This is time for harvest, and you will taste the sweetest fruit and best delicacies.

From December to February of the next year. During this time, northern Xinjiang is an ice & snow world, so it is also the paradise for those who love winter sports. Skiing, skating and sledging, enjoy heartily the wonderful winter in Xinjinag!
