Wout van Aert leaves Tour de France to be with pregnant wife: 'It's an easy decision'

Wout van Aert is abandoning the Tour de France after learning that his pregnant wife's labor is "imminent." He's seen here earlier this week, ascending Saint-Gervais-les-Bains in the French Alps.

The Tour de France will end in Paris in just a few days — but it will do so without one of its most exciting riders, as Wout van Aert quits cycling's biggest race to be with his wife, Sarah, who is expecting their second child.

"On the one hand it's a strange feeling but it's not a dilemma," Van Aert said in a video announcing his withdrawal. "It's an easy decision. I always thought that I would go home when my wife indicated that she needed me."

In this year's Tour, Van Aert has been a crucial ally of defending champion Jonas Vingegaard on Jumbo-Visma's eight-man team, using his unique strength and versatility to put pressure on Vingegaard's top rival, two-time winner Tadej Pogacar.

But Thursday's stage 18 began without Van Aert. He leaves this year's edition of cycling's landmark event without adding to his career nine stage wins. Van Aert said that while he had hoped to make it to Paris, he's been discussing a potential early exit with his team.

"I always thought that I would go home when my wife indicated that she needed me," the Belgian said. With the family's doctor assessing that labor is imminent, he said, "My place is now at home."

Van Aert, 28, said his teammates "are 100% behind me," and he's confident that they'll shepherd Vingegaard, who now has a comfortable lead of more than 7 minutes over Pogacar, to the podium in Paris.

This year's Tour de France brought a thrilling duel between Vingegaard and Pogacar, with the two most recent champions fighting for every second as the road race headed into its final week. But Vingegaard finally cemented his advantage in the Alps, in Tuesday's time trial and Wednesday's epic mountain stage.

For his part, Van Aert said, "I look back on this Tour in a positive way, but I will always remember this Tour as the one where I called home every day."

Wout van Aert: "We never underestimated Pogacar"

“This morning I was scared that I might not have anything left after yesterday but my legs were still good. It wasn’t exactly the scenario we wished for but at the end it’s rather positive to see Jonas wearing the yellow jersey. We never underestimated Tadej Pogacar. He’s still there and able to bounce back even when he loses time, he already proved it in the past. I’d like to be back on stage for a stage win. I don’t know if it’ll be possible tomorrow in Bordeaux. That’s a stage for pure sprinters. I might target Limoges instead.”

Wout van Aert leaves Tour de France, with wife Sarah due to give birth 'imminently'

Jumbo-Visma rider says that decision to head home, with four stages still to come, is not a dilemma

Wout van Aert on stage 15 of the 2023 Tour de France

Wout van Aert will not start stage 18 of the Tour de France , with the Jumbo-Visma rider instead heading home as his wife Sarah is set to give birth imminently.

The news was announced in a video released by the team on Twitter on Thursday morning, which was recorded on Wednesday morning, ahead of stage 17.

In the video Van Aert said: "Things are starting to get a bit tight at home. In consultation with the team, we have decided that my place is now at home. We have been seeing the doctor at home for the last few weeks. He has assessed that labour is imminent. That's why we have made this decision."

With his team leader Jonas Vingegaard now over seven minutes in front at the top of the general classification, the decision might be a bit easier now than if it had come earlier in the race.

Last week, Van Aert was forced to deny rumours that he was leaving the race after stage 10, a rumour that it emerged had started with Lidl-Trek's Mattias Skjelmose. Now, the news is true.

Van Aert said in the video: "On the one hand, it's a strange feeling, but it's not a dilemma. It's an easy decision. I always thought that I would go home when my wife indicated she needed me. That time has come. So in that respect, it's not a dilemma.

"I told the boys at dinner last night. I am delighted that they have all understood the decision and are one hundred percent behind me. Those even guys will perform well for the rest of the Tour. Everything will be fine."

"I started the Tour hoping to make it to Paris," he continued. "I was in touch with home every day. My wife had a short line to the doctor. We had agreed that if she was close to giving birth, and me being on the Tour no longer felt comfortable, I would go home. In agreement with the team, we knew that's was how we would handle it."

It had been the "Tour of 'not quite'" for Van Aert, with seven top ten results, including four podium finishes, but no stage victory. It is the first Tour he has ever raced in without taking a win.

"I often had the legs to win the stage, but it didn't happen," the Belgian said. "It gives me mixed feelings. Results are one thing, the feeling on the bike is another. It was super good. The experience with the guys was excellent.

"To be able to fight for our goals again gave me motivation. I look back on this Tour in a positive way. But I will always remember this Tour as the one where I called home every day, and this is where I will leave the Tour."

It is expected that Van Aert will appear at the World Championships, which are just weeks away in Glasgow.

Tom Dumoulin criticises Wout van Aert for Tour de France stage 10 tactics

Former teammate 'didn't understand' why Belgian 'wasted energy' in attack with Van der Poel

Wout van Aert and Mathieu Van der Poel on the attack on stage 10 of the 2023 Tour de France

Wout Van Aert has received criticism from former teammate Tom Dumoulin for his curious tactics on stage 10 of the Tour de France .

The Jumbo-Visma rider stayed on the wheel of long-term rival Mathieu van der Poel ( Alpecin-Deceuninck ) as he created separation on the descent from Saint-Alyre-ès-Montagne just under 50km from the finish in Issoire.

Van der Poel had originally tried pacing to reduce the breakaway’s advantage which was north of two minutes, but once they reached the foot of the final climb, the Dutchman knocked off his effort with no chance of catching the break leaving Van Aert solo.

"I do not get it at all. I still understand from Mathieu [van der Poel] that he will play a bit and drive on. Wout [Van Aert] is accidentally in his wheel, but then takes over and continues to drive. I didn't understand that," said Dumoulin on Vive le Vélo on Tuesday.

'It was all in bits' on Tour de France stage 10 as Vingegaard, Pogacar battle sizzles Tour de France: Pello Bilbao scorches sprint from breakaway to win stage 10 'It was all just a rumour' – Van Aert denies he is leaving the Tour de France

"Wout didn’t have a good ride. He really 'threw' his powers. At some point, he had to realise where it was not really necessary.”

It was speculated that Van Aert had been riding all out as he was set to leave the Tour to attend the birth of his second child. He quickly dispelled this rumour which made his tactics all the more curious to Dumoulin.

“The team might have needed him later. I also did not understand his move in the final. If you want to win the Tour with Jonas Vingegaard , Van Aert should not actually do this,” continued Dumoulin.

"With one more climb to go and two and a half minutes from the leading group, you don't have to attack anymore. The chance is minimal that you will join the leading group. That was wasted energy. In the first place for himself, but also for the team."

Van Aert and Dumoulin were teammates for three years from 2020 until August of the 2022 season when Dumoulin retired from the sport.

It wasn’t all negative from the former Giro d’Italia winner, however, as he was quick to highlight Van Aert’s utility as an incredible domestique.

“Until today, Wout van Aert has done everything right, he has been a super teammate for Jonas Vingegaard,” Dumoulin said. “Jumbo-Visma has only one goal and that is to win the Tour.

“Wout can take his chance in the stages that suit him. They also went for him in the second stage, but Vingegaard was told before the Tour that in principle he should not help Van Aert. He should have done it then.”

Belgian media had said that the defending Tour de France champion wasn’t working enough for Van Aert when Jumbo-Visma were outfoxed by Victor Lafay (Cofidis) on the finish into San Sebastian on stage 2 which left the Belgian extremely frustrated.

Van Aert has won nine Tour stages throughout his career and at least one at each of his appearances at La Grand Boucle but is yet to stand atop the podium in the 2023 race. His team leader Vingegaard is currently in the yellow jersey, but only 17 seconds ahead of two-time Tour winner, Tadej Pogačar .

Van Aert’s next chance will be on stage 11 from Clermont-Ferrand to Moulins on a parcours which should suit his abilities. If he comes close to the win again but misses out, more questions will be raised about the way he decided to ride on stage 10.

Tour de France 2023 build-up: Remembering Wout van Aert's great triumphs

Wout van Aert is one of the best cyclists on the current scene and arrives at the Tour de France 2023 after having swept 2022 with stage victories, the green jersey and being key in the final victory of Jonas Vingegaard.

He hopes to repeat it this year (although he has already warned that he will not go for the points jersey this time). As an aperitif before the start of the Tour, we would like to take a look at his achievements throughout his career in road cycling .

"I haven't cycled in recent days, that doesn't make you a nicer person at home either" - Wout Poels Tour de France in doubt after illness puts halt to his preparations

In 2014, Van Aert began to make his mark by taking victory in the Tour of Liège, as well as winning two stages in the Tour of Liège. These early victories gave him a platform to showcase his potential as a cyclist.

In 2016, he continued his progression by winning a stage of the Tour of Belgium and the prestigious Schaals Sels race. These victories cemented his position as one of his country's most promising cyclists.

Mathieu van der Poel: "I want to ride my best Tour yet"

In 2017, Van Aert continued to rack up wins by taking the Tour of Limburg, the Bruges Cycling Classic and the Grand Prix Pino Cerami. These victories demonstrated his ability to compete in both one-day races and longer races.

In 2018, Van Aert took the Tour of Denmark in its entirety, as well as winning a stage in the same competition. He also achieved an outstanding third place at the European Road Championships, winning the bronze medal.

Merijn Zeeman on Sepp Kuss: "He is the only rider who is still uncertain about his place in the Tour"

2019 was another great year for Van Aert, who won two stages of the Critérium du Dauphiné and took the Belgian national time trial champion title. He also took third place in the Belgian Road Championships and won a stage of the Tour de France.

In 2020, Van Aert proved his dominance in classics and one-day races by winning Strade Bianche and Milan-San Remo. He also won a stage of the Critérium du Dauphiné and retained the Belgian national time trial champion title. In the Tour de France, he took two stages and finished second in the World Championships in both the time trial and road race.

The year 2021 was another stellar year for Van Aert, where he won two stages at Tirreno-Adriatico, the Ghent-Wevelgem classic, and the Amstel Gold Race. He also took the Belgian national road champion title and won three stages of the Tour de France. At the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, he won the silver medal in the road race. He also won the Tour of Britain in its entirety and won four stages.

Tadej Pogacar on Primoz Roglic and Remco Evenepoel: "If I were him, I would participate in the Tour de France"

In 2022, Van Aert continued his winning streak by winning the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, a stage of Paris-Nice, the E3 Saxo Bank Classic and two stages of the Critérium du Dauphiné. In addition, in the Tour de France, he took three stages and won the points classification and the combativity prize. He also won the Bretagne Classic.

In 2023, Van Aert has started the year with a victory in the E3 Saxo Classic, proving that his dominance in the classics and one-day races continues.

Wout van Aert has proven to be a versatile and well-rounded cyclist, capable of taking victories in a wide variety of terrains and competitions. His ability in the one-day races and his ability to compete in the grand tours make him an exceptional rider. With his impressive track record and undeniable talent, Van Aert has earned a prominent place in cycling history and continues to be a figure to watch in the world of sport.

Is There Drama on Jumbo-Visma? Wout van Aert Visibly Upset After Stage 2 Loss

Wout van Aert was not happy at the end of Stage 2 after narrowly losing out on his first stage win.

Yesterday, after barely losing Stage 2 to Viktor Lafay of Cofidis (marking the team’s first Tour victory in fifteen years), team Jumbo-Visma’s superdomesitque Wout van Aert slammed his fist frustration.

After making his way through the post-race fray, the Belgian star reportedly slammed his water bottle to the ground and threw down his bike after arriving at Jumbo’s team bus. Shortly after that, he was seen leaving the team bus and being taken to their hotel while the rest of his Jumbo-Visma teammates were still on the bus.

He did not speak to the media after the stage.

Asked about a potential rift between him and his biggest supporter, reigning Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard remarked that the media trying to exploit that angle was “not fair.”

No doubt the media were playing on the storyline that there is some sort of personal friction between van Aert and Vingegaard, as both were recently two of the main subjects of the Netflix series Tour de France: Unchained . Throughout the series, the filmmakers used some clever editing to play up some dramatic tension between van Aert and his teammates, notably Vingegaard.

It’s a tension that van Aert insists was manufactured , telling Belgian sports outlet Sporza that it was “quite disturbing that stories were written in the documentary that were not there.”

“For me, the series is focused on commotion,” he continued. “Jonas and I are best mates.”

Asked about yesterday’s close loss, Vingegaard said, “We’re a bit disappointed with that. Of course, we would have liked to win with Wout. We came for the win today.”

Still, Vingegaard defended himself and his actions to the media . After a reporter asked if he could have done more to help Wout take the stage, Vingegaard replied, “I think I already did something for Wout. I could have been selfish and pulled with Pogačar, so in that case I was also kind of helping that I didn’t pull.”

Vingegaard’s closest rival, two-time Tour champion and current white jersey leader Tadej Pogačar was overheard saying that van Aert’s heated reaction to the loss was “like a child,” according to CyclingNews.com .

The opening stages of this year’s Tour de France have given fans some uncharacteristic fireworks. Normally, the Tour’s first week is a bit more by the numbers. There are few major climbs, most big-name racers are just trying to stay in one piece, and the heavyweight teams are generally hunting for stage wins while keeping their GC rider in the best possible position once the race reaches the mountains.

But the first two stages have been rife with storylines and early drama.

Team UAE seemed to be bickering with each other throughout yesterday’s second stage, apparently unable to get on the same page. Neilsen Powless is leading the King of the Mountains competition (and, as of this writing, leading the third stage in a two-man breakaway), making him the first American since 2017 to do so. And of course, French outfit Cofidis, which has long been a bit of a punching bag in the peloton, finally won a stage of their home race.

We’ll see how everything shakes out in the coming weeks but so far, this has been one of the most exciting opening weeks in recent memory.

Wout van Aert leaves Tour de France, returns home for birth of his son: "My wife needs me"

Last week it was a false rumour, but now the former cyclocross world champion Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) is really leaving the Tour de France. The 28-year-old rider is about to become a father for a second time and is rushing to Belgium to be by his wife’s side.

"It's starting to get urgent at home," he says in a team video recorded yesterday morning.

"In agreement with the team, we decided that my place is now at home," Belgian time trial  champion Van Aert explained.  "The birth is imminent."

Wout van Aert and Sarah De Bie are expecting a second son, a brother for Georges (2).

Wout van Aert leaves the Tour, with teammate Jonas Vingegaard at the head of the standings.

"I will remember this Tour as the one I called home every day," laughs Van Aert. "In a way it's a weird feeling, but on the other hand it was an easy decision."

"This doesn't feel like a dilemma at all. My wife needs me," says Van Aert, who failed to win a single stage this year.

On four occasions he finished in the top three. The Belgian time trial champion did do a lot of work to help Vingegaard to another overall victory.

On Sunday 6 August, we should see Wout van Aert back in his racing clothes for the World Cup in Glasgow (Scotland).

The Tour de France 2023 has all the makings of another road cycling thriller.

Will the world’s most prestigious race be the third act in the epic battle between defending champion Jonas Vingegaard of Denmark and 2021 champion Tadej Pogacar ?

Soon we will have all the answers with the 110 th edition of the French Grand Tour starting on Saturday (1 July) in Bilbao, the largest city in the Basque Country, Spain.

Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) is hoping to be crowned champion again, after he won last year’s race as just the second Dane in history ahead of Slovenia’s two-time Tour de France winner, Tadej Pogacar

It is the 110 th edition of the French Grand Tour that will feature Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion Richard Carapaz , silver medallist Wout van Aert and bronze medallist Pogacar.

La Grande Boucle will cover 3,404 km over the 21 stages, with the final stage taking place at the Champs-Élysées in Paris on 23 July. There are eight flat stages, four hilly stages, one time trial and eight mountain stages. Four of these have summit finishes, including the stage to the mythical Puy de Dôme.

176 riders will be on the start line at the Guggenheim Museum, one of Bilbao’s major tourist attractions, with eight riders for each of the 22 teams.

In 2022, we witnessed a breathtaking duel between Vingegaard and Pogacar , and they are coming into this year’s race as the two big favourites.

The 26-year-old Dane has participated in four stage races this season, having won three of them in dominant fashion - O Gran Camiño, Itzulia Basque Country, and most recently the Critérium du Dauphiné.

Pogacar and Vingegaard last faced each other at the Paris-Nice in March, where the 24-year-old Slovenian claimed victory ahead of David Gaudu and Vingegaard .

UAE Tean Emirates captain Pogacar has claimed no less than 14 victories this season including Paris-Nice, Tour of Flanders, Amstel Gold Race and La Flèche Wallonne, before he crashed and broke his wrist at the Liège-Bastogne-Liège.

The two-time Il Lombardia winner made his comeback last week, claiming both the Slovenian national time trial and road race championship.

2022 Giro d’Italia winner Jai Hindley is going to be the leader on a strong BORA - Hansgrohe team. At the Critérium du Dauphiné, 27-year-old Hindley finished fourth behind Adam Yates of the UAE Team Emirates and his compatriot Ben O'Connor of AG2R Citroën Team.

With his win at last year’s Giro, the Australian has shown that he has the endurance needed to compete in a three-week Grand Tour.

22-year-old Mattias Skjelmose (Denmark) stunned the world of cycling by winning the Tour de Suisse earlier this month ahead of the likes of Remco Evenepoel and Juan Ayuso .

He continued his impressive run and was crowned Danish road race champion on Sunday (25 June), after a spectacular solo effort in the final kilometres.

The Trek-Segafredo rider has participated in one Grand Tour previously as he rode the Giro d’Italia last year finishing just 40 th . This year’s Tour de France will be a test of his stamina.

And dont count out Enric Mas. The 28-year-old Spaniard has finished second in the general classification at the Vuelta a España three times and is hoping to make the podium at the Tour.

The Movistar rider came in top six overall in three stage races this season.

Other key riders at the Tour de France 2023

Green jersey.

Last year's points competition winner Wout van Aert has already announced that the green jersey will not be a target for him as he aims to win stages and prepare for the UCI Cycling World Championships that takes place just two weeks after the finish in Paris.

That leaves Jasper Philipsen of Alpecin-Deceuninck as the favourite to take the crown. The Belgian clinched two stages last season - including the most prestigious sprint finish on the Champs-Élysées - and he has already six race wins this season. His versatile teammate Mathieu van der Poel seems to be in the shape of his life, and if the Paris-Roubaix winner gets the freedom to chase the green jersey, watch out for the Dutchman.

The biggest threat might come from Soudal-Quick Step that always target stage wins with their sprinter. Fabio Jakobsen will be their trusted sprinter, like last year. The Dutchman is supported by a strong sprint cast with the most experienced lead-out man in the peloton, Michael Mørkøv, to set him up.

Sprinter’s teams like Team Jayco Alula with Dylan Groenewegen and Lotto Dstny with Caleb Ewan will also chase stage wins and are contenders for the green jersey.

Denmark’s Mads Pedersen and Biniam Girmay of Eritrea are not only great sprinters but also good climbers. That ability can secure points for the green jersey classification on the more hilly stages. Pedersen took his first Tour de France stage win in last year’s edition and claimed the green jersey in the Vuelta a España, but like van Aert he has announced his focus is to arrive in top shape at the UCI Cycling World Championships in Glasgow.

Polka dot jersey

In the last three editions of the Tour de France, the winner of the king of the mountains classification has also been the overall winner of the Tour de France. Therefore, Pogacar and Vingegaard are the top contenders this year.

For the French riders it will be a special achievement to be on the podium in Paris wearing the polka dot jersey. Thibaut Pinot , who was king of the mountains classification at the Giro d’Italia in May is keen on challenging the two top guns as is 2019 polka dot jersey winner Romain Bardet .

Tour de France 2023 route and important stages

The 2023 Tour de France begins with a hilly stage containing some 3,400 metres of climbing. Contenders for the overall win will have to be ready from the start on the hills around Bilbao. The stage suits classics specialist like Mathieu van der Poel , Wout van Aert and Julian Alaphilippe who all want to be the first rider to wear the yellow jersey at this year’s Tour de France.

After another hilly stage in the Basque Country to San Sebastian on stage two, the peloton will cross the French border and resume the race with flat stages on day three and four.

Stage five will take the peloton on the first mountain stage in the Pyrenees which includes Col du Soudet and Col de Marie Blanque. The following day, the riders will tackle the mythical mountain Col du Tourmalet before finishing the stage on the category 1 climb Cauterets-Cambasque. Week one concludes with an eagerly anticipated summit finish to the volcano Puy de Dôme that returns to the Tour after a 35-year absence.

On stage 13 in week two, the teams face a gruelling finish to Col du Grand Colombier in the Jura mountains. The two following days will also test the riders’ climbing skills with stage 15 featuring a summit finish to Saint-Gervais Mont-Blanc in the Alps to end week two.

The final week kicks off with stage 16, the only individual time trial in the race. It is just 22 kilometres long but contains a fair amount of climbing, especially in the second part of the route. After the time trial, the queen stage of the Tour de France with more than 5000 metres of climbing is sure to generate plenty of drama. Colo de la Loze, the highest point of the race at 2304m, is the biggest obstacle on this stage being 28 kilometres long, with an average gradient of six percent.

Two flatter stages follow ahead of a short but mountainous penultimate stage in the Vosges on stage 20. It will be the last chance for the general classification contenders to gain time before the celebrations in Paris.

Dres roztržený až do půle zad. Ze sedřených míst se mu spouštěla krev. Hlasitě křičel.

Proto, jak ho všechno bolelo. Proto, že mu v tu chvíli došlo, o co přijde.

Za čtyři dny ho měla čekat klasika Kolem Flander a za další týden Paříž–Roubaix. Právě těmto dvěma závodům podřídil celou zimní přípravu. Dokonce i výrazně osekal cyklokrosový program a vynechal mistrovství světa v Táboře.

„Dělám to s těžkým srdcem,“ vysvětloval.

Z mistrovství světa má čtyři stříbra, z olympijských her v Tokiu 2021 jedno a další z evropského šampionátu.

I tohle chtěl letos změnit. Jenže jarní pád mu plány rozmetal.

Kromě odřenin si zlomil klíční kost, několik žeber a hrudní kost.

Jenže přišel první kopec a hned ztrácel.

Musím to prostě skousnout a vytrvat.“

A další den vítězství.

Tour de France 2023: Wout van Aert speaks on rumours of Jumbo-Visma tensions - 'We laugh about it'

Rob Hemingway

Updated 03/07/2023 at 13:05 GMT

The conclusion to Stage 2 of the Tour de France saw Wout van Aert react angrily as he was beaten by Victor Lafay. Van Aert threw a bottle to the ground, but rebuffed rumours of a split inside Jumbo-Visma after some had questioned whether Jonas Vingegaard had done all he could to deliver his teammate to the line. Eurosport's Philippe Gilbert said he feels it is "exaggeration" from the media.
