The Story Of The Traveling Duck

It all started out rather humbly, as most hero’s journeys do. Sarah and I had been dating for a little while when we were invited out to go bowling with a colleague and some of his friends. It turned out that “some” friends was essentially an entire church congregation and since the bowling alley could not accommodate the massive group size we decided to grab Chinese food at a place down the block. The group was large enough that we spanned a number of large tables and somehow Sarah and I ended up at a table that didn’t include the one person we knew in the group, a great situation for a couple of introverts. Still, we muscled through it and at some point in the conversation it came up that there was some company that had an 800 number where one of the phone options was “Press X to hear a duck quack.” Someone there realized it was Aflac and my (now) wife knew the classic Gilbert Godfried duck voice “Aflac Aflac Aflaaaaac!”. Later that night, I googled Aflac to see what they did and saw that they sold a plush talking duck. I thought it was cute and that Sarah would love it, so I ordered it for her. She loved it (maybe the best money I’ve ever spent on a gift on a whim), declared his name to be Aflac, and we started bringing him with us when we traveled. When I took off on a road trip to see sites in Arizona and Utah , he came with me. Along the way, someone noticed me taking pictures of Aflac and offered to take one of Aflac and I together. I accepted and she asked, “Is that a traveling duck?”. “Why yes, yes he is.” Aflac has continued to come with us on our travels and we’ve taken a lot of pictures of him along the way.

What the duck? Why people hide these kiddie toys on cruises — and how you can, too

Ashley Kosciolek

On many a cruise, rubber ducks can be found peeking out from random hiding places, beckoning passengers to pick them up and read their accompanying information tags. Perhaps you'll find one hidden behind a plant by the Doe Family from Springfield or another carefully placed somewhere in the buffet by the Smiths from Greenville.

What the duck, you might be wondering, is the deal with hiding ducks on cruise ships?

As an avid duck hider, let me clue you in to this popular onboard pastime. Whether you're ready to hide ducks on cruises or want to send your kids on a hunt for cruise ducks, you'll need to get your own ducks in a row before you set sail.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's new cruise newsletter .

Cruise ship rubber ducks, explained

travelling duck

Cruisers often bring rubber ducks on cruises in an effort to have a bit of fun by hiding them throughout the ship. The ducks usually have information cards attached to them bearing the names of the people who hid them and where those passengers are from.

What began in 2018 as a cute gesture by a 10-year-old girl named Abby — who simply wanted to make other passengers smile — now spans several Facebook groups with hundreds of thousands of members. In these groups, cruisers chat about the ducks they've ordered, the best places to purchase them, clever places to hide them after they've set sail and the best ways to attach the information tags.

The largest group I've been able to find — yes, I'm a member — is " Cruising Ducks - Original ," which encourages people to share photos of the ducks they plan to hide as well as ducks they've found on board. Think of it a bit like geocaching, but simpler — and with ducks.

What to do if you find cruise ship ducks

travelling duck

If you find a duck, the next step is simple. Take a photo of yourself with the duck you've found and post it to the "Cruising Ducks - Original" Facebook group. Mention the name of the person who hid it. You might also choose to reach out to thank them if they have provided contact information on the card attached to the duck.

Then, either keep your new friend to take home with you as a souvenir or re-hide it according to the below rules.

Rules for hiding ducks on a cruise

travelling duck

It might sound silly, but there are rules for hiding rubber ducks on cruises. The first is that you should never put it in a pool or hot tub. You wouldn't want an excited child or inebriated passenger to fall in and drown or hurt themselves while attempting to fetch it.

Second, don't hide ducks in any of the onboard shops. If someone finds one hidden there and tries to take it with them, it could appear as though they're stealing something.

Third, don't place ducks where they might fall overboard. It's a huge no-no to toss anything into the ocean, even by accident.

When choosing ducks, the sky is the limit. I've seen everything from mini-ducks to giant ones that are a foot tall. You can find simple, classic yellow ducks in bulk online or you can choose to go all-out and purchase custom ones in a color or design that suits your personality. You might also choose to order plain ones and decorate them yourself with feathers, glitter or paint. Really, anything goes in terms of theme.

Some participants even choose to vary it a bit by hiding other duck-themed toys or objects, such as duck keychains, hand-crocheted ducks, duck-shaped Hot Wheels cars or small LEGO duck kits.

On a couple of my recent sailings, I won some inexpensive mini-ducks by playing a claw game in the arcade, and I used spare hair ties to attach my business card to them. It was a last-minute improvisation, but boy was it fun. Hiding them also kept the young daughter of one of my travel companions busy for an afternoon.

travelling duck

(Inspired by that experience, the cruise team here at The Points Guy got creative and had some specialty captain ducks made for the team to hide on upcoming cruises.)

For the tags, make sure to include your name and where you're from, along with instructions for the people who find your little quackers. Standard wording is generally something like this:

"Oh, what luck. You found a duck! Keep or hide, you decide. You found a cruising duck hidden by [name] from [city, state, country]. Hide in public places only — no pools, hot tubs or stores. Take a photo, and post it in the Facebook group 'Cruising Ducks - Original.'"

At a minimum, the tag should tell the duck's finders that they can either keep or re-hide the duck and the places that are off-limits. It should also encourage them to share the ducks they find online. You can also choose to include additional information, such as a QR code or your e-mail address.

Bottom line

If you're hiding ducks, be sure to adhere to the rules. If you find a duck, whether you keep it or re-hide it, be sure to post a photo per the accompanying instructions.

Hiding rubber ducks on cruise ships is a fun way to connect with other passengers on your next sailing, as well as a fun pastime on sea days. Whether you find a duck and contact the folks who hid it or hide your own flock so others can reach out to you, it can help you to make new friends from all corners of the globe.

Breaking News

Guest editorial: perspective – america’s cross to bear, headline news, subscriber only, another big year for the estes park rotary duck race festival.

The Estes Park Duck Race, held each year on the first Saturday in May, sees hundreds of ducks float down Fall River as a way to raise money for local Estes Park non-profits.(Dawn Wilson/Estes Park Trail-Gazette)

Even though the number of ducks in the water was down this year, the decision to increase the return to participating organizations by $1/duck adoption offset the decrease in adoptions. The resulting return of $182,666 to organizations is virtually identical to the 2023 return.

“The day started out chilly and overcast. I am sure the hearty bunch of runners in the Duck Waddle 5k were outfitting themselves for a mid-winter run, but as often happens in Estes Park, the clouds cleared and we had a bright sunny afternoon for the ducks and our festival guests,” said Big Duck Scott Robbins. The Duck Waddle 5K started things off at 9:00 a.m. around Lake Estes.

Other festivities began at 10:30 a.m. at Bond Park, Riverside Plaza, Nicky’s Resort and Performance Park. There was live music, balloon art, rubber ducky painting, face painting, djembe drummers and a community drum circle. Wait, there’s more: Musical entertainment, Ballet Renaissance, the ever-popular Duck Squat, duck-themed merchandise sales, and all sorts of other activities were ongoing throughout the day.

“Lucky Duck was flying all over town making appearances and warming the hearts of children of all ages,” said Big Duck Scott Robbins. “Cowboy Brad and all of our entertainers made it a special day. Most importantly, our Estes Valley residents, visitors from the front range and supporters from all over the U.S. and abroad showed up through their duck adoptions to support 63 of our local charities and nonprofits.”

2024 has seen an increased emphasis on the entertainment aspect of the festival.

“We are very pleased with the online duck adoption infrastructure that has been put in place over the past couple of years. “Consequently, the Race Committee decided to enhance our entertainment and food offerings this year. Bond Park was added as a music and activity venue. Food vendors, organization and sponsor tables, and children’s activities were also added at Bond Park,” said Big Duck Scott Robbins. Cowboy Brad headlined a full day of entertainment at Bond Park in addition to our customary performers at riverside Plaza, Performance Park, and Nicky’s Resort and Wapiti Colorado Pub.

Some statistics from the 2024 Duck Race:

Number of duck adoptions: 8,969.

Amount to be distributed to 63 Participating Organizations: $182,666 ($23 of every $25 paid duck adoption.)

Time from start to finish line for Duck #1: 1 hour, 38 minutes

Prizes donated by merchants: 344

Top prize winners: Donna Compton – $10,000 cash prize Don Martin – $6,000 cash prize Michael Sweeney – $4,000 cash prize Jason Weber – Two-night stay plus guided tour at Camp Hale vacation package

Donna Compton of Tacoma, WA was the winner of the top cash prize of $10,000. Donna was quick to respond to Duck Central when she learned she had won. “Even though I live in Tacoma, WA, my heart belongs to Colorado”. She and her husband lived in Big Elk Meadows for twenty years before moving to the Grand Lake area. Donna said most of her winnings would go to good causes like the VFD of Big Elk, and a favorite animal rescue group. She added she would be using a bit of her winnings for herself as she takes a cross-country trip to visit her 99-year-old aunt. Her final statement was “I am so grateful for this gift of luck and [I] appreciate your foundational participation and contribution to a beloved, fun event.”

Six-thousand-dollar prize winner Don Martin has recently relocated to Estes Park from Colorado Springs after having visited here a number of times. His favorite charity is Estes Park Special Olympics.

Third prize winner Michael Sweeney, when notified that he had won the $4,000 cash prize, said, he and his family first started coming out to Estes Park in 1971 to stay at the YMCA of the Rockies when his children were growing up. He said: “ I could hardly believe my eyes when I saw I had won a prize as I was watching the broadcast on the Rocky Mountain Channel!” He went on to say his favorite charity here has always been the Rocky Mountain Conservancy and he will continue to participate in the duck race and contribute to the Rocky Mountain Conservancy.

To see a full list of prizes, visit epduckrace.org.

The high level of duck adoptions are an indication of just how hard the 63 Participating Organizations worked this year to promote duck adoptions to support their missions. The top 10 organizations in sales were, in order of sales:

1. Pet Association of EP $10,166 2. Estes Park Schools Bands $ 9,660 3. Glen Haven Area VFD $ 8,303 4. Estes Valley Crisis Advocates $ 6,624 5. Rocky Mountain Conservancy $ 6,555 6. Pinewood Springs Fire Protection $ 6,026 7. Crossroads Ministry of EP $ 5,543 8. Big Elk Volunteer Fire Dept $ 4,807 9. Estes Valley Land Trust $ 4,646 10. Estes Valley Library Foundation $ 4,508

Robbins estimated that 150 volunteers had turned out to help with the Race. “As in the past, we asked each participating organization to provide at least one volunteer to help with the Duck Race,” he said. “Several organizations provided more than one volunteer. Robbins estimated there were an additional 40 Rotarians who assisted with the balance of volunteers coming from EPHS and the community at-large.

There are so many people and organizations that have made the Duck Race Festival a success in 2024, we can’t call them all out for the recognition they deserve in this article, but a few deserve special recognition. Visit Estes Park has done a wonderful job of publicizing the festival. Kudos to the Town of Estes Park for their financial assistance and planning to help the duck race festival expand to Bond Park. Flatiron Construction, the Town Public Works Department and Police Auxiliary all played essential roles in helping with pedestrian and vehicular traffic between Riverside Plaza and Bond Park. The Rocky Mountain Channel’s Nick Molle and Bob Fulton outdid themselves with the wonderfully crafted livestream of the program. As usual the backroom operations led by Jeff Lindberg, Lawrence Trifiletti, and Lee Lasson ran like a well-oiled machine in reporting prize winners and making that information available at epduckrace.org.

Rotarians Jim Austin and Ben Van der Werf led the crew of finish line waders armed with their trusty fish nets to scoop the ducks out of the water as they crossed the line. Duck Race Sheriff Carl Robicheaux and his River Patrollers made sure no one drowned and that the ducks enjoying their time in the eddies got swept to the finish line.

Andrea Escorcia was chief Cat Herder err Volunteer Coordinator and Karen Thompson was indispensable as Entertainment Manager. Chuck Bonza who ably oversaw activities at George Hix Riverside Plaza and finally, Hariette Woodard who was coaxed out of retirement from Sunrise Rotary to oversee activities at Bond Park.

“The Rotary Club of Estes Park is proud to sponsor and host the Rotary Duck Race Festival as one of its premier community service projects,” Robbins said. “This festival only happens because of the many volunteers with the festival that want it to happen. They dedicate hundreds of hours to make it happen. It. is a superb example of a community event that brings the locals out, supports our participating organizations and helps stoke the economic engine of Estes Park by bringing visitors to Estes Park who patronize our restaurants, lodging, and merchants. It’s a day of fun to celebrate community! What could be better than that?” said Robbins.

Betting line sees big shift in Oregon Ducks vs. Ohio State Buckeyes 2024 matchup

The 2024 college football season is still several months away, but there is one date circled on the calendar this far out.

October 12, 2024.

On that day, the Ohio State Buckeyes will travel to Eugene to face the Oregon Ducks , and we will get what will undoubtedly be one of the best regular season games of the year, and a potential preview of the 2024 Big Ten Championship Game.

It will be Ryan Day vs. Dan Lanning, Will Howard vs. Dillon Gabriel, and Quinshon Judkins vs. Jordan James. A matchup with this much intrigue has already gotten people talking, and sportsbooks were early to set a betting line, with FanDuel Sportsbook listing the Ducks as a 1.5-point favorite back in January.

Recently, though, we saw a shift in the betting odds. Now, FanDuel has the visiting Buckeyes listed as a 1.5-point favorite following the spring football season. Ohio State is also -115 on the moneyline, with Oregon at -104, and the over/under has been set at 57.5.

Regardless of who comes out on top, this projects to be an incredible matchup with some of the best players in the nation on a big stage. It also has a good chance to be a conference championship preview, and could very well be a College Football Playoff preview as well.
