Gros Morne Adventures | Hiking Tours & Marine Adventures Logo

The Gros Morne Fall Colours Hiking Tour features the perfect blend of adventure, culture and culinary in Gros Morne National Park with a sample of the best of the Humber Valley region in Western Newfoundland. Stand on the stunning viewpoint of Gros Morne Mountain with a view of the 10 Mile Pond Fjord, experience the Tablelands and walk on the Earth's mantle, cruise on a zodiac in a double-armed fjord and capture lifetime memories while looking at the red, orange and yellow hues in the Humber Valley.

Seven days of exploration will take you from Norris Point, our base camp for 4 nights, to the new Hew & Draw Hotel in Corner Brook for 2 nights. We'll dine at the best restaurants, sample the local fare and finish with a brewery tour at Boomstick Brewing Co.

What to Bring

2024 Tour Dates:

  • September 29 - October 5, 2024

Day 1 Arrival & Orientation.

Meet 5:30pm at Gros Morne Adventures waterfront office in Norris Point for an evening orientation followed by a welcome dinner. Accommodations are in Norris Point at Gros Morne Base Camp. The same accommodation is used each night.

Please note: Gros Morne Adventures provides a free shuttle from Deer Lake Airport between 2-3:00pm*. If the free shuttle time is not convenient, taxi services are available from Deer Lake Airport. Contact our office for taxi company information. *Based on 2023 flight schedule.

Day 2 Green Point Geological Site + Western Brook Pond (6km, easy)

We'll start with a short drive north to explore Green Point’s seaside cliffs, a beautiful and intriguing sequence of layered rocks. Almost 500 million years ago, these rocks formed on the bottom of an ancient ocean. Here geologists discovered fossils that define the boundary between the Cambrian and Ordovician periods and makes Green Point a world geological benchmark.

We'll head a little further north to walk the coastal lowlands across bogs and limestone ridges to Western Brook Pond, a spectacular freshwater lake hemmed in by 650m granite cliffs.

Day 3 Tablelands (4km, easy) + Lookout Trail (5km, moderate)

The day starts with a zodiac ride from the Norris Point waterfront across Bonne Bay to Woody Point. Drive a short distance to the Tablelands, an eerie landscape of mantle rock that once lay beneath the ancient Iapetus Ocean. From a geological and natural history perspective, it is one of the main reasons why Gros Morne National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Follow the Lookout trail to one of the best panoramic vistas in the park. You’ll climb steadily through forest, then emerge from the trees onto a highland plateau. From the platform atop Partridgeberry Hill, you’ll enjoy spectacular views of Bonne Bay, Gros Morne Mountain, the Tablelands, and the Lookout Hills.

Day 4 Gros Morne Mountain (17km, challenging)

Depart from Norris Point and drive to the Gros Morne Mountain trailhead. This rigorous hike leads to the Arctic alpine wilderness of the Long Range Mountains and the highest point in Gros Morne National Park. Despite the sparse vegetation that clings to this barren landscape, hardy inhabitants like the Woodland Caribou, Moose, and Rock Ptarmigan are quite at home in this environment.

Enjoy spectacular views overlooking the glacier-carved fjords of Bonne Bay and Ten Mile Pond. The summit is at 806m and the entire hike will take about 7-8 hours. Despite a long day on the trail, the natural beauty and unique flora and fauna of this area is well worth the effort.

Note: shorter hiking option available.

Day 5 Corner Brook Stream Trail (6 km, easy-moderate)

Journey from the mountains into the Humber Valley as you make your way to Corner Brook. Stop to find the Man in the Mountain, a stone carved face in the cliffs overlooking the Humber River. Explore the incredible colors of fall foliage as you wind through the Corner Brook trail network. Begin in the hills on top of the chiseled gorge, follow the path towards Margaret Bowater Park and the Glynmill Inn Pond. Enjoy an evening relaxing at the Hew and Draw Hotel.

Day 6 Cape Blow-Me-Down Trail (7-8 km, moderate-difficult)

The last day takes the group west towards the Gulf of St. Lawrence, past fishing communities and back into the Appalachian Mountain range. Tackle the 650m ascent of Cape Blow Me Down, an exposed landscape that showcases some of the finest views in Western Newfoundland. Visit the interpretive site of the newly formed Cabox Geopark and see why the mountain range in Western Newfoundland has been called the "Galapagos of Plate Tectonics".

Day 7 Departure

Return to Deer Lake Airport. Shuttle available at 7:00 and 11:00 am. *Based on 2023 flight schedule.

  • 6 nights accommodation
  • 5 full days of activity
  • ground transportation
  • airport (YDF) transfers

For solo travellers, you have the option to try and share with another hiker, however if no one is available to share, the single supplement fee of $395 will apply.

Lunch is an assortment of fruit, juice, sandwiches, vegetable snacks, and sweets. Evening meals are enjoyed at local restaurants and main course options are available. There’s plenty of food and our staff are always there to cater to your needs!

If you have any dietary restrictions it’s very important to inform us in advance in order to make the necessary arrangements.

  • Small daypack – will need to carry your lunch, water, extra clothing, camera, binoculars and rain gear.
  • Hiking boots – we recommend a light full leather hiking boot. If it rains your feet will get wet with the mesh style boots unless they have a waterproof barrier (ie. Gortex).
  • Rain pants and jacket (Gore-Tex or equivalent) - it will very likely rain while you are here. Your experience will be so much more enjoyable with breathable, waterproof rain gear (ie. Gore-Tex). Choose pants with full length leg zippers, much easy to get on and off.
  • Sun hat with wide brim
  • Fleece hat & mitts (or gloves)
  • Fleece sweater – combination of a 100 & 200 weight works better that one heavy fleece
  • Long sleeve synthetic shirt – help prevents sunburn, roll-up sleeves if needed, & they dry quickly
  • T-shirts (100% cotton doesn’t dry quickly)
  • Hiking shorts – quick dry
  • Wind pants – quick dry
  • Hiking Socks (synthetic blend & polypropylene liners)
  • Handkerchief
  • Sun block & lip balm
  • Insect repellent – generally isn’t a problem since we usually have a breeze. May want to take if you have any sensitivity to black flies and mosquitoes.
  • Medications (medications that would not be part of our standard first aid kit)
  • Blister Treatment – Moleskin, 2nd Skin, and Medicated Bandages (Compeed, Band Aid, etc.)
  • Water Bottles or Bladder (2 litres minimum) with a holder for easy access
  • *Hand sanitizer and non-medical face masks*

Optional Gear & Clothing

  • Gaiters – nice to have on the Big Lookout hike (off-trail) but not necessary
  • Small pad to sit on at lunch – the ground can be damp
  • Camera & batteries
  • Pocket knife
  • Hand Sanitizer
  • Hiking poles

Coastal hiking – be prepared for rapid weather change!

  • Cottons are cold when wet and take considerable time to dry. We strongly recommend wearing polyester blend garments that will dry quickly.
  • Hikers will be expected to carry, at a minimum, in their daypack– a rain jacket and pants, fleece/wool top, lunch, and 2 litres of water. Water should be easily accessed (placed on the outside of your pack in a pocket or attachable pouch), hydration is extremely important!

Please do not hesitate to call our office if you have questions pertaining to clothing – the right cloth

Western Brook Pond Tour

All tours are weather permitting

Gros Morne National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site situated on the western coast of the island of Newfoundland. Located in the Park is the landlocked fjord of Western Brook Pond. Carved by glaciers, stunning fjords, plenty of waterfalls and wildlife it is recognized for its beauty and geological significance.

The tour has been featured in many magazines and several television programs. Throughout the two hour boat tour we provide live interpretation pointing out some of the geological and historical features of this wonder of nature. Refreshments are available. Our boats have canopied decks and on-board lavatories.

The lake waters are pristine, having had very little impact from human activities. Our vessels, in order to operate on the pond, have a special certification required by Parks Canada and have  minimal impact on the environment.

There is no better way to explore this magnificent scenery than by taking the Western Brook Pond Boat Tour!

What To Expect

Explore the stunning vistas by taking our Western Brook Pond tour located in the Gros Morne National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This experience is part of Canada’s Canadian Signature Experiences collection, which shows the world the best that Canada has to offer. The pond is located in the long Range Mountains, the most northern section of the Appalachian Mountains surrounded by deep rock walls. This 16 kilometer lake with a depth of 165 meters is home to Atlantic Salmon, Brook Trout and Arctic Char and an unusual colony of cliff nesting gulls. The pond is a freshwater fjord carved out by glaciers during the ice age 25,000 to 10,000 years ago. Its water is extremely pure.

Aboard, at Western Brook Pond, observe the spectacular glacier-carved land-locked fjord, waterfalls cascading from 2000 feet that often turn to mist before reaching the pond, billion year old cliffs, and frequent wildlife sightings. Glacial action has resulted in magnificent scenery, with coastal lowland, alpine plateau, glacial valleys, sheer cliffs, waterfalls and many pristine lakes. There is camping in the park, or stay in one of the adjoining seaside communities of Cow Head, Glenburnie, Norris Point, Rocky Harbour, Trout River or Woody Point.

Gros Morne National Park, an outstanding wilderness environment of spectacular landlocked, freshwater fjords and glacier-scoured headlands in an ocean setting, is an area of exceptional natural beauty. This special place is truly a photographer’s paradise. Amazing photographs can be produced with absolutely stunning images.

Overall, I would recommend spending at least 3-5 days in Gros Morne National Park to fully appreciate the area’s natural beauty and experience some of the popular activities. However, if you have more time available, you can easily spend a week or more in the park and still have plenty to see and do.

Tablelands, Gros Morne

Best Things to Do in and Around Gros Morne National Park

Gros Morne National Park is a hiker’s paradise, with a wide variety of trails that cater to all skill levels and interests. The park has over 100 km of trails, ranging from easy boardwalks to challenging multi-day treks.

One of the most popular hikes in Gros Morne is the Tablelands Trail , which takes you on a 4 km (round trip) journey through a stark landscape that’s unique to the park – you might just think you’ve landed on Mars. The Tablelands are a flat-topped mountain that is composed of rock that was once part of the Earth’s mantle, making it a geological wonder. The trail is relatively easy, but the terrain can be rough in places, so sturdy footwear is recommended.

For those seeking a more challenging hike, the Gros Morne Mountain Trail is a must-try. This 16 km round trip trail takes hikers up to the second highest peak in Newfoundland, offering breathtaking views of the park’s fjords and surrounding mountains. The hike is rated as difficult and takes 6-8 hours to complete, so it’s recommended for experienced hikers only.

Other popular hiking trails in Gros Morne include the Green Gardens Trail , which takes visitors on a 6 km round trip journey through coastal meadows and cliffs, and the Lookout Trail, a short but steep hike that offers stunning views of the Long Range Mountains.

Western Brook pond

One of my favourite things to do in Western Newfoundland is the Western Brook Pond boat tour. It’s one of the most popular activities in Gros Morne National Park and for good reason. The two-hour journey will take you through the heart of the park’s fjords, providing stunning views of the towering cliffs, waterfalls, and unique rock formations.

It all starts with a scenic 3 km walk through the ancient Long Range Mountains to reach the dock at Western Brook Pond. Once on board the boat, you’re treated to a fully-guided tour that provides insight into the geology, wildlife, and history of the area. Keep your eyes peeled for bald eagles, ospreys, and possibly even moose and caribou. The highlight of the tour is undoubtedly the view of the 600-metre high cliffs that surround Western Brook Pond, creating a dramatic and awe-inspiring backdrop for the journey.

The Western Brook Pond boat tour is available from early June to mid-October, and reservations are highly recommended since it’s likely to sell out.

Moose

Gros Morne National Park is home to a variety of wildlife, including moose , caribou , black bears , and a wide range of bird species. Moose are perhaps the most iconic of the park’s wildlife, with the population estimated to be around 5000 animals.

Moose sightings in Gros Morne are common, and visitors often spot them along the side of the road or while hiking on the park’s trails. The best time to see moose is typically early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when they are most active. However, it’s important to keep a safe distance from the animals as they can be unpredictable and potentially dangerous.

In addition to moose, visitors to Gros Morne may also have the chance to spot caribou, which are typically found in higher elevations. Black bears are also present in the park, although they are generally shy and avoid human contact.

Birdwatching is also a popular activity in Gros Morne, with the park home to over 200 species of birds. Some of the most commonly spotted birds include bald eagles, ospreys, and Atlantic puffins.

Fishing is a popular activity in Gros Morne National Park, and there are several fishing tours available that allow visitors to experience the park’s natural beauty while trying to catch fish.

One of the most popular fishing tours in Gros Morne is the trout fishing tour on the park’s freshwater ponds and rivers. Trout fishing is a great way to enjoy the park’s natural beauty and is suitable for both novice and experienced anglers. Some of the fish species that can be caught in Gros Morne include brook trout, brown trout, and Arctic char.

There are also deep-sea fishing tours available that depart from nearby towns such as Rocky Harbour or Norris Point. These tours typically take visitors out to the Gulf of St. Lawrence or the Atlantic Ocean, where they can try to catch fish such as cod, halibut, and mackerel. Deep-sea fishing tours are a great way to experience the beauty of Gros Morne from a different perspective and can be a thrilling adventure for both individuals and groups.

It’s worth noting that fishing in Gros Morne National Park requires a valid Newfoundland and Labrador fishing license, which can be purchased at local outfitters or online. Visitors should also be aware of local fishing regulations and guidelines to ensure that they are fishing responsibly and ethically.

The Trails, Tales, and Tunes Festival is an annual 10-day event held in May that celebrates the unique culture and heritage of the area with music, storytelling, hiking, and other outdoor activities. Enjoy fine talent presented in intimate venues throughout the picturesque town of Norris Point.

Writers at Woody Point is an annual literary festival in the charming town of Woody Point, featuring readings, workshops, and performances by acclaimed writers and musicians from Newfoundland and beyond.

The Gros Morne Theatre Festival is an annual summer festival in Cow Head that showcases local and regional theatre productions, music, and other performing arts.

Shallow Bay Beach

While Gros Morne National Park is best known for its stunning mountains, forests, and lakes, there are also several beautiful beaches in the area that are worth visiting.

One of the most popular beaches near Gros Morne is Shallow Bay Beach , located in the town of Cow Head. Shallow Bay Beach is a long, sandy beach that’s perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and beachcombing. The beach is also surrounded by sand dunes and offers spectacular views of the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

Another popular beach in the area is Norris Point Beach , which is located on Bonne Bay and offers stunning views of Gros Morne Mountain. The beach is a great spot for swimming and kayaking, and there are several hiking trails nearby that lead to scenic viewpoints.

Lobster Cove Head Beach is another beautiful spot that’s worth checking out. Located near Rocky Harbour, this beach is a great spot for hiking, birdwatching, and exploring the nearby tidal pools.

Keep in mind that the waters near these beaches can be cold, even during the summer months.

Gros Morne has some of the darkest skies in North America, making it a great spot for stargazing. In fact, Gros Morne National Park is in the process of applying to the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada for designation as a Dark Sky Preserve. The park hosts a dark sky festival each year in October.

Lobster Cove Head Lighthouse

The Lobster Cove Head Lighthouse is a historic lighthouse located near Rocky Harbour in Gros Morne National Park. The lighthouse was first built in 1897 and has since been restored to its original appearance, making it a popular attraction for visitors to the area. In addition to its historical significance, the Lobster Cove Head Lighthouse offers stunning views of the coastline and the surrounding landscape. Visitors can tour the lighthouse and learn about its history, as well as enjoy the scenic hiking trails and picnic areas nearby. The Lobster Cove Head Lighthouse is a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Gros Morne National Park.

Great guide! We need to come back in the summer to do that boat tour – and try even more of the food! It’s gorgeous here in the fall but some locations are now closed. We built a map of the hiking trails, campsites and notable attractions in the area.

Plan A Trip To This Canadian National Park For Scenic Outdoor Adventures

T he vastness, diversity, and natural splendor of Canada's wilderness is unlike any other. Covered by forests, mountains, lakes, and rivers, this giant country is filled with awe-inspiring destinations. One especially scenic Canadian attraction is Gros Morne National Park. If you're looking to embark on some outdoor adventures while surrounded by immense beauty, then this is a place for you. Located on the west coast of Newfoundland, Gros Morne National Park borders the Gulf of St. Lawrence and reaches across the tremendous Long Range Mountains.

Throughout the park, you'll find a range of breathtaking and diverse ecosystems, including an arctic-alpine ecosystem, freshwater ecosystem, and forest ecosystem. Inhabiting these different ecosystems are a variety of unique flora and fauna. As a result, the park was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. Escape the monotony of modern life and start planning your expedition through the breathtaking views at Gros Morne National Park.

What To See While Visiting Gros Morne National Park

Home to remarkable natural landmarks, a trip to Gros Morne National Park will remind you of just how amazing Mother Earth can be. Perhaps one of the national park's most significant landmarks is the Tablelands. In contrast to the lush, green vegetation of the surrounding park, this terrain is characterized by its rusty brown, barren, and almost Mars-like surface. For any geology nerds out there, this particular location exposes the same substance that constitutes the Earth's mantle. These Tablelands played a pivotal role in scientists' understanding of the history and functioning of tectonic plates.

If you want to take in serene views of calm waters, then make your way to the Brook Pond Gorge. Here you'll spot the park's famous freshwater fjords. Thousands of years ago, glaciers paved this deep-V, crystal-clear inlet. Surrounded by towering cliffs, you'll be amazed by the dramatic views this site offers. For wildlife lovers, you'll be happy to know that visitors frequently spot moose, black bears, woodland caribou, puffins, and more roaming the park.

Activities At Gros Morne National Park

Not only is there plenty to see while visiting Gros Morne National Park, but there is also plenty to do. The diverse landscape offers a variety of opportunities for outdoor activities. If you're looking for a hike, the mountainous terrain is chock full of them. The park's most famous hike is the Gros Morne Mountain Trail. However, note that this  trail is not for amateurs . Only take it on if you feel equipped to handle over 10 miles of difficult challenges. If you're looking for an easier but beautiful route, Western Brook Pond Trail is a great option for beginner hikers .

Off-land, you'll find that there are stunning areas for kayaking, like Inner Bonne Bay and Shallow Bay. Swimming is also permitted at Shallow Bay. However, if you do decide to explore the park's waters, it is crucial that you exercise caution given the location's proclivity to strong ocean currents, freezing water, and a lack of lifeguards. In the winter, you'll likely have no desire to get close to the frigid waters. But visitors can explore the park via cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in the highlands of the Long Range Mountains. Whatever you decide to do, we recommend you find a professional local tour guide who knows the Gros Morne National Park like the back of their hand and is an expert at your chosen activity. This will ensure your safety throughout the adventure.
