These international volunteer opportunities enable you to support locally-driven projects that uplift under-resourced communities around the world.

If you’re looking to join a mission trip in 2024 or 2025, we’ve outlined IVHQ’s most popular types of mission trips and all the information you need to know to find your perfect mission.

What is a mission trip?

A mission trip is an international volunteering opportunity centered around collaborative efforts with local communities to provide essential support where it is most needed. These trips can be either religious or non-religious in nature, aiming to uplift individuals, local communities, and natural environments across the globe. IVHQ offers inclusive volunteer abroad programs that welcome participants of all ages and life stages.

Through IVHQ’s diverse range of mission trips , individuals can make a tangible impact while fostering new friendships, discovering diverse cultures, and broadening their horizons—all while contributing to the well-being of those who require assistance the most.

Why do people go on mission trips?

Mission trips are a popular way to combine your desire to travel and see with world with your motivation to give back and make a difference in the world. While some people see mission trips as an opportunity to put their faith into action, others go on mission trips for a variety of non-religious reasons, including:

To make a difference: Many people go on mission trips make a positive impact in the world through providing support to communities in a range of different ways. This could involve volunteering to teach English , building schools or homes , providing medical care , volunteering with animals or supporting environmental conservation .

To gain a new perspective: Traveling to a new country and immersing yourself in a different culture can be a life-changing and transformative experience. Mission trips allow you to see the world with fresh eyes and gain a better understanding of different cultures and ways of life.

To meet new people: Mission trips offer an opportunity to connect with people from all around the world. International volunteers work together towards a common goal, often forming life-long friendships and connections along the way.

To get out of your comfort zone : Mission trips are an opportunity to discover a new sense of purpose by stepping out of your comfort zone, discovering new countries and cultures, and living like the locals. This can be equally challenging and rewarding! Taking a mission trip is an opportunity to growth as person, discover your strengths and weaknesses and redefine your purpose in life.

While people go on mission trips for a variety of reasons, at the heart of it is a desire to make a positive impact on the world, connect with others and build a better future together.

Quote from IVHQ Volunteer Ruth Cartwright - Childcare in Sri Lanka

I recently returned from a mission trip to Sri Lanka and it was everything I dreamt it would be. I lived with a family in the jungle next to the longest river in the country, volunteering in a disabled childcare center. I was so happy with the project and had a wonderful - and sometimes challenging - experience. I would recommend this mission trip to anyone who wants to travel alone.

How much does it cost to go on a mission trip?

The cost of going on a mission trip varies depending on the destination and duration of the trip. IVHQ makes mission trips accessible to volunteers worldwide through affordable volunteer program fees and flexible durations.

For example, the cost of a 2-week mission trip with IVHQ to Tanzania is US$415, while a 4-week trip to India is US$585. These costs cover accommodation, meals, airport pick-up, and in-country support from IVHQ’s local team.

Additional costs that volunteers need to consider include the IVHQ registration fee , airfares, travel insurance, and any necessary visas or vaccinations. However, IVHQ provides detailed information and support to help volunteers prepare for their mission trip and manage these additional costs.

It’s worth noting that IVHQ also offers a range of fundraising ideas and resources to help volunteers cover the costs of their trip. For example, volunteers can create a fundraising page via IVHQ’s fundraising partner and share it with friends and family to collect donations.

IVHQ’s fees are transparent and inclusive, making it easy for volunteers to plan and budget for their trip without breaking the bank.

Why do a mission trip with IVHQ?

Short-term mission trips for families

Bold Hope has partners around the globe who faithfully serve their communities in myriad ways. It is our desire to come alongside them by sending mission teams to participate in their endeavors. On your mission trip, you’ll work with our partners to provide assistance wherever it’s most needed, from children’s homes to schools and churches.

  • Dominican Republic

In these countries and others, there are impoverished communities in need of facilities, food and care. Many children are placed in orphanages to protect them from the poverty their parents face, and many buildings are falling apart due to the lack of resources. As a result, people struggle to find HOPE .

Your family mission trip will be full of chances for even the youngest of your clan to get involved. Service opportunities may include things such as organizing sports, making crafts, volunteering at orphanages and children's homes, or assisting in a house build. Whatever your projects include, this unique opportunity will allow your family to grow closer while creating lasting memories and strengthening their relationship with the Lord.

5 Reasons Every Family Should Go On A Family Mission Trip

  • Mission Trips

Vacation. Soccer Camp. Drama Club. Cookouts. VBS. Playdates. Crafts. Games. Snacks. Repeat.

For today’s family, summer break can feel less and less like a relaxed intermission from the school year and more and more like a lesson in endurance.  Ironically, parents can become busier over the summer months, catching the brunt of the responsibility to plan additional childcare or activities for kids in lieu of an eight-hour school day.

“We just need to make it through vacation”           “When this party is over, I’ll enjoy summer”           “If I hear ‘I’m bored’ one more time, I’m going to flip.”

Any of these sound familiar?

As the daylight hours get longer and kids and parents alike seek more activities, there’s a tendency to tighten our belt loops, pull up our boots and charge ahead full speed until September. But what if there was a way to hit the pause button on summer, allowing for a concentrated time of family connection over meaningful topics such as faith and service?

For the 3 rd year, YouthWorks is teaming up with Sticky Faith to provide unique family mission trip experiences to families like yours. Here are 5 reasons why we think every family should go on a family mission trip:

Family Mission Trip

1.   Family Mission Trips Have the Details Covered

Let’s just restate that: YouthWorks takes care of the details. Grocery shopping? We do it. Schedule? We’ve got it figured out. Kid Activities? Let us take care of that. From meal planning to coordinating volunteer service sites to creating family-friendly evening programming, we provide the trip’s flexible framework and resources so parents can fully engage in the experience.

2.   Family Mission Trips Provide Focused Family Time

There are no football camps, Wii consoles, TVs or work meetings. While all these things have a time and a place, it’s not on a family trip. As families step outside their normal rhythm of life, there are ample opportunities for focused family time. Families help prepare meals together, spend their days serving alongside one another and engage in evening programming as a unit. The time away from digital distractions and activities in favor of togetherness is a breath of fresh air.

3.   Family Mission Trips Cultivate a Value of Serving Others

Sticky Faith has done extensive research showing that families who serve together tend to grow in faith together.  Parents want to sow seeds of empathy, compassion and generosity in their children, but sometimes coming up with tangible manifestations of these values can be a struggle. On family trips, we set you up with age-appropriate service sites that can easily be recreated in your hometown. We guide parents through the logistics of serving at a nursing home, food bank or other community organization so they can have the tools to foster similar service opportunities at home.

4.   Family Mission Trips Foster Faith Conversations

Sticky Faith research has also shown that when kids grow up in families who talk about faith together, they tend to stick with faith into adulthood. The resources YouthWorks and Sticky Faith have created particularly for family trips are designed to help parents talk with their kids about faith, service and Jesus. Families will explore what it means to “Live Like Jesus” in their everyday lives, diving deeper into the concepts of seeing, listening, serving and loving like Jesus through guided conversation and talking points.

5.   Family Mission Trips Create Lasting Memories

In 10 years, it’s not the Netflix special or the Pinterest-inspired Fourth of July party kids will remember from summer 2015; it’s playing Bingo with Miss Peggy at the nursing home, bunking down in a tent at the housing site or quality time with their parents that they will remember. Family trips are all the stuff memorable moments are made of: family, shared experiences, joy, togetherness. Family trips create a foundation for a lasting legacy of faith, service and love.

As June draws closer and VBS, soccer camps and the never-ending stream of things to do continues, take some time to hit the pause button on typical summer activities and hit the play button on a concentrated time of family connection. Take a family mission trip .

Collette Konkel

Darlene konkel, kristen ogle, tyson stout, are you ready to make a change.

Is your heart stirring for more, but you just aren’t sure what that looks like? We get it, the tension of living with one foot in heaven and one foot on earth is tough. But what if we could live every day like Jesus and the disciples did so long ago?

The Bible isn’t just a storybook, it’s an action plan that exhorts us to go and serve and discover how to live every day with hearts beating for what God is doing on this earth.

We wanted people like you (and us for that matter!) to have the opportunity to experience Heaven’s heart for the nations.

All it takes is a YES in your spirit to answer the call of what you know God’s called you in your heart to do. Are you ready for a change? It’s time to make an impact and activate your passions!

INSTAGRAM FEED

The cost of your trip covers your food, lodging, Adventures t-shirt, journal, ministry expenses, international health insurance (if applicable) and other associated costs.

For mission trips in the U.S., you are responsible for your round-trip airfare/transportation to the trip location and transportation during the mission trip. For overseas trips, you are responsible for your round-trip travel/transportation to the city that corresponds to your location. Adventures will provide ground transportation upon your arrival.

Participant minimums vary trip to trip. Check with your Missions Representative for your trip’s minimum.

We are not doctors and have no medical training so we are not qualified from a medical perspective to say you should or should not get certain vaccinations. We suggest that you determine which vaccinations you may need by visiting the   CDC website   or consulting your local travel health specialist and reviewing their recommendations based on the country(ies) you will be visiting. Some countries require a Yellow Fever Certificate to enter, so pay particular attention to that.

You may or may not choose to receive all the vaccinations recommended by the CDC or your physician. It is your personal decision what vaccinations you receive, but we recommend you seek a medical professional’s advice concerning that decision.

Do not purchase your airfare until you are directed to do so by your Admissions Representative. If a trip cancels due to lack of interest, Adventures will refund all money paid to Adventures but is not responsible for airfare and will not refund it.

Your Mission Leader will be wearing an Adventures t-shirt, similar to the one you will receive prior to your departure date. You will be sent additional information from your Mission Leader directing you to a central meeting location.

On the field, lodging varies per location. You may be provided a bunk bed or cot or you may be asked to bring an air mattress to sleep on the floor of a local church. Males and females will be separated for lodging. You will receive more information regarding your housing arrangements prior to your trip.

Yes, however accommodations vary by location and it may not be in a traditional shower. You will have access to clean water.

You are welcome to bring your cell phone to take pictures, use as alarm clock, an ipod, etc. However, your cell phone may or may not have reception in overseas locations.

Please evaluate your reasons for bringing phones or ipods on this trip. You are on the trip to minister to others, to serve God, and develop a deeper relationship with God. Phones and other electronic devices may be a distraction to what God is trying to tell you.

That being said, we also realize phones can be great ministry tools! We want you to take pictures and video of your trip. And don’t forget to tag them with #adventuresinmissions when you post them to social media. Please note: Adventures is not responsible for any lost, stolen, or damaged electronic devices.

How much spending money you bring depends entirely on your personal spending habits and financial situation. Remember, all your meals will be covered by Adventures. So, extra personal money would be entirely at your discretion.

Remember when you’re on the field in ministry, you represent God, Adventures, and local missionaries. Modesty is the key in guiding decisions of what clothes to pack; a good rule of thumb: when in doubt, don’t bring it. A general packing list and our dress code will be provided for you..

Be prepared to cover up tattoos or remove piercings if the host cultures/ministries find them offensive. If this is necessary, your leaders will let you know this before you get in country.

For information on applying for a passport for the first time, visit this  website  or make an appointment at your local post office. Generally, it takes approximately 4 – 6 weeks from the time of application for you to receive your passport. We must have your passport information before airline tickets are purchased so please get your passport ASAP. Sometimes it may take longer than 6 weeks to receive your passport, so apply now.

Generally, Mission Leaders are adults who have led or participated in previous Adventures trips, and some Mission Leaders are Adventures staff. During your trip, your Mission Leader will be the liaison between your team and the ministry host, coordinating daily ministry schedules. The Mission Leader also facilitates nightly debrief sessions, encouraging your team to respond to what God is doing during the trip. Our goal is for you to have contact with your Mission Leader roughly 1 month prior to your trip.

We at Adventures In Missions take the responsibility and care of our participants very seriously.

The reality is the world can be an unsafe place. That truth is not limited to overseas travel. While we cannot guarantee safety, safety and security is a top priority for our programs. We set protocols to minimize risk while expanding each student’s exploration of God’s Kingdom.

Our staff monitors safety concerns and issues around the world, including organized protests, political uprisings, medical alerts, and natural disasters. We maintain active communication with our international contacts and will change locations if we believe the risk level in an area is no longer appropriate for our participants.

A deposit of $75.00 per person is required to secure each participant’s space on the mission trip. The remaining trip balance will be due in two equal installments. The first payment is due approximately 6 weeks days prior to your trip start date and the second payment is due approximately 4 weeks prior to your trip start date. Please refer to our Financial Policy in your online profile for specific any additional financial deadlines and policies.

Grow in Faith as You Serve on a Christian Mission Trip

Grow in Faith as You Serve on a Christian Mission Trip

Christian Mission Trips

Our Christian mission experiences give youth, teens, and adults the time to connect with Jesus and each other through home repair and community service projects. As you step out of your normal routine and serve others, you’ll learn leadership skills and strengthen your spiritual foundation. You’ll be stretched beyond your comfort zone, encouraged to focus on the needs of others instead of your own, strengthen your faith, and grow in Christian character.

The Group Mission Trips team dedicates extensive time and energy to create a new program experience that is woven throughout your mission trips experience, connecting your service to your Christian faith. Here’s how:

  • Morning Program – Jump-start the day with a morning program, an introduction to the daily theme, and thoughtful conversation before launching into service projects.
  • Crew Devotions – During lunch, share meaningful conversation about Jesus’ connection to your service and the daily theme with those you are serving with.
  • Evening Program – Gather for a high-energy experience that celebrates the way God is uniquely working in the community. You’ll also explore the daily theme using video, drama, music, and impactful conversations, all centered on Jesus.
  • Group Devotions – You’ll meet with your group to unpack the day, exchanging stories of how you saw God at work during the day. You’ll cap the day with conversation centered around Scripture, the daily theme, and prayer together.

With your involvement, residents are helped, communities are strengthened, and lives are changed!

Short-Term Missions.

Long-term impact..

Group Mission Trips creates the perfect environment for youth and adults to build relationships and make a long-term impact while serving on short-term mission trips across the world.

“I have been taking High School aged youth on mission trips for approximately 20 years. Over the last 12 years I have used GMT. They are by far the best I have used. Their programing is Christ centered and thought provoking.”

“Been on Group Mission Trips for about 15 years! It is a tremendous program and gets kids (and adults!) to participate actively in the expansion of God's Kingdom. The leadership, administration, and staff have been wonderful for each experience. My youth group (as well as myself) have been blessed continually throughout the years!”

“Summer 2019 was my first experience with GMT. I took a group of high schoolers to a South Dakota for home repair on a reservation, and a group of middle + high schoolers to Denver. Both trips were very organized and communication with staff was wonderful! We are excited to use Group again this year! ”

“One single review cannot describe the life-changing experience that can be had with GMT. Taking middle school and high school kids to an experience that is outside of 'normal' for most kids, helping revitalize communities, and meet people outside their current home and social media bubble is priceless... ”

Brian Anderson

“ I always found the trips well organized and managed, with staff that were dedicated to serving the community hosting the Workcamp, as well as the growth of the youth involved. Having seen the positive outcomes for all involved, I sought out opportunities to continue my involvement with Group Mission Trips after my son graduated from high school.”

Marvin Rasch

“I have worked with Group Mission Trips since the early 90s. Each and every summer it is such a blessing to serve others and help in various communities. There have been so many life changing events over the years. I would definitely recommend Group Mission Trips to others... ”

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can participate.

For Workcamps & Week of Hope

  • Due to liability, under-aged participants will be sent home at their own expense ( NO babies or any children under the required age).
  • Only registered participants are permitted at the lodging facility and on the project sites.
  • No special skills are required.
  • 19 or 20 year olds are welcome to attend as participants! Remember that  only those that are 21 or older will be considered “adults”  at camp and count in your 1 adult to 5 youth required ratio.

Will our group be working together?

We normally split groups up into work crews.  But, we are willing to work with your group on how you’d like to split into crews. Our work crews are made up of six people with usually one or two adults and four or five youth--typically each person from a different church. If you’d like to have your youth meet new friends and develop friendships outside of your youth group, then allow us to split up your group. If you have specific church safety rules that require your group to be together, we are more than happy to arrange that for your group as well. Our top priority is to partner with you to arrange the best experience for your youth group and help you meet your ministry goals.

What about safety?

Safety is our top priority!

  • We require groups to bring 1 adult (21 or older) for every 5 participants that are under 21 years of age.
  • We require participants that are 18 and older be screened and background-checked by their church. Their pastor signs off that they meet Group Mission Trips' requirements and that they are approved to attend.
  • Every staff member has been screened, background-checked, and reference checked by Group Mission Trips.
  • For overall protection, we have separate shower times designated for participants that are 17 and younger from those that are 18 and older.
  • We review safety procedures at camp.
  • Participants are not required to do any work that they consider unsafe.
  • Although we do serve in needy areas, we require crews to stay together at all times. No one should ever be left alone and all participants are back at the lodging facility by their designated check in time.
  • Group Mission Trips' staff visit the crews every day so they are aware of where a crew is working and any issues in the area.
  • Every crew has the direct phone number to the GMT office and directions to the closest hospital. If an injury occurs on the project site, and is not serious, GMT staff will contact the youth leader and coordinate any transportation needed. If the injury is serious, the adult on site will call 911 and GMT staff will offer support and ensure needed medical forms are delivered to hospital.
  • Each crew will have a small first aid kit and a bigger one for every vehicle.

The safety of your group is a top priority for us, as we’re sure it is for you. In all the areas we serve, we take extra precautions to make sure you or your group is as safe as possible. Guided by our local, experienced ministry staff partners, we avoid situations that are inherently dangerous. We’re also proactive by choosing lodging facilities and transportation that are safe and reliable. Our mission trip advisors are glad to answer further safety questions.

What about transportation?

For Domestic trips

  • Groups must provide transportation to and from the mission trip as well as daily to and from the sites.
  • All vehicles must be available for transportation to and from the sites. (Mileage or fuel costs are not reimbursed for any transportation costs.)
  • Vehicles with a minimum capacity of six passengers are requested, with seat belts. While adults will be driving their vehicles, they typically will not be transporting a crew that includes their own youth members. Typically, the youth from your group will be traveling in other vehicles with their crews.
  • Due to rough terrain and narrow roads, there are some locations that are labeled “Not Bus Accessible”. If you are serving at one of these, you’ll need to plan on bringing smaller vehicles.

What will we be doing?

For Workcamps

Your participants will provide home repairs at no cost for elderly, disabled, and disadvantaged people who need your help. Work crews typically serve the same resident for the entire trip, creating an environment where meaningful relationships develop.

Most projects are designed to be completed during the trip, allowing your group to experience the satisfaction of a job well done. You’ll serve the needs of others through projects like interior and exterior painting, building or repairing porches and wheelchair ramps, building or repairing steps, weatherization and other home repairs. No skills are needed!

For Week of Hope

Be ready to tackle any project and expect to interact each day with local residents from the community.  Crews typically serve at the same organization for the entire camp (or at the most 2 organizations), creating an environment where meaningful relationships develop.

Projects could include working with children at a day camp, serving at a food bank or homeless shelter, leading a Vacation Bible School, improving the homes of people in need, assisting the elderly, tutoring struggling kids, working with disabled children, facilitating a sports camp, and/or serving churches and other human service organizations in different ways. If there are any minor repair projects, we may ask your group to bring a few small hand tools and paint brushes.

Where do we stay?

For Workcamps

A Workcamp can hold up to 400 participants and we house them all typically at a middle or high school. Group Mission Trip staff transforms the facility into a home away from home–there will be a separate boy’s hall and girl’s hall, a cafeteria for meals, adequate bathrooms and showers, and either a gym or auditorium for programs.

Participants need to bring twin-size air mattresses, pillows, sleeping bags or other bedding to sleep on classroom floors. Youth groups are assigned to sleeping rooms together, gender separate. Sleeping rooms may be shared with other youth groups, depending on the size of groups and the size of the room.

Registered groups can see more information about their lodging facility online on their Customer Account under Lodging Info. The primary contact will have access to the lodging facility’s address.

A Week of Hope can hold up to 100 participants and we house them all typically at a local church. Group Mission Trips' staff transforms the facility into a home away from home–there will be a separate boy’s hall and girl’s hall, a space for meals, adequate bathrooms and showers, and a space for the programs.

Participants need to bring twin-size air mattresses, pillows, sleeping bags or other bedding to sleep on floors. Youth groups are assigned to sleeping rooms together, gender separate. Sleeping rooms may be shared with other youth groups, depending on the size of groups and the size of the room.

What is the menu? What if there are special dietary needs?

For Workcamps and Week of Hope

Meals will consist of hot breakfasts, picnic-style lunches, and hot dinners. All meals will be prepared for participants by kitchen staff. Picnic-style lunches will be assembled in the mornings and brought to work sites. The first provided meal is dinner on Sunday and the last meal is breakfast on Saturday. IMPORTANT NOTE: Dinner is NOT provided on Wednesday, youth groups have free time this day and dinner is on their own.

For registered groups:  If you have a participant that has to eat gluten-free--please let us know. We can have a few gluten free options at camp, but need to know in advance to plan. The sample menu is located on your customer account, under Helpful Resources, and under Schedule, Menu, and Packing. Share this with your participants so they can start planning. Participants with special diets or allergies are welcome to bring their own food items to fill in as needed during the week. Please know that we do have peanut butter on the menu. Group Mission Trips is unable to guarantee there will not be any cross-contamination during meal preparation by kitchen staff. There will be a staff member available at camp who will be able to answer any questions about food.

What are the programs like?

Focused on Jesus.  Our goal is to point people to Jesus. Programs focus on Bible passages and daily themes that challenge us to respond to Jesus in ways we will never forget.

Interactive . People learn better by doing. Participants will be involved in sharing, speaking, acting, reflecting...not just sitting and watching.

Relevant.  Through creative multimedia, thought provoking sound and video, our programs are designed to reach everyone.

Fun.  Relationship-building activities, games and having fun are part of every program. Expect to have a great time!

What's included in the registration fee?

  • Lodging during the camp.
  • All meals, except for dinner on Wednesday for a Workcamp.
  • Site selection and organization.
  • Supplies and project materials for each work site.
  • Bible-based thematic, fun, faith building programs.
  • Devotions to do before, during, and after camp.
  • Highly trained staff to handle all the details.
  • Custodians and cafeteria staff to take care of lodging cleanliness and meals.

How to Take an Awesome San Diego Family Vacation

Balboa Park in San Diego

This post contains affiliate links. Read the full disclosure here .

Our San Diego family vacation may be one of my favorite trips we’ve ever taken. It was our first trip post-pandemic, and we all fell in love with this sunny California city. Plus, there are SO MANY great activities for kids here that adults will still love, which makes it one of my top choices for a multi-generational family trip .

So, here’s how you can plan your own San Diego family vacation!

Why is San Diego so Perfect for Families?

First, let me tell you *why* I love San Diego for families so much.

  • Perfect weather all the time. There was a big storm one night while we were there actually, and we learned how rare this actually is when our waiter told us he hadn’t seen lightning in like 5 years.
  • Beautiful outdoor spaces. San Diego may be a big city, but there are so many amazing outdoor spaces that don’t make it feel like such a big city.
  • Amazing activities for kids. From the San Diego Zoo to museums to theme parks, there are so many kid-friendly activities here. Which makes it so easy to balance more adult-focused things with kid-focused things. And honestly, everything we did in San Diego was something kids and adults enjoyed equally!

Best Things To Do on a San Diego Family Vacation

San diego zoo.

mission trip with family

The San Diego Zoo is definitely one of the most popular things to do in San Diego. It’s a historic zoo, getting its start after animals were left in San Diego from the 1915 Panama-California Exposition.

It’s located in Balboa Park. And while I’ve got tons of great tips for visiting the San Diego Zoo, here’s a quick breakdown of how to spend your day there:

  • Start off with the free bus tour to get the lay of the land.
  • Explore the right side of the zoo, seeing Australian and African animals .
  • Take the Skyfari (bucket gondola system) from the back of the park to the front.
  • Let your kids spend time playing the Wildlife Explorers Basecamp (children’s zoo area).
  • Spend your afternoon in the Lost Forest area.

There’s lots to explore here, and several restaurants and snack spots where you can get lunch while you are there.

And for more details, here’s a full post about how you can plan your one day San Diego Zoo itinerary!

Pro Tip: To save money at San Diego attractions, buy the San Diego Go City Pass. It allows you to get into multiple San Diego attractions!

San Diego Zoo Safari Park

mission trip with family

The San Diego Zoo system actually has a second zoo 30 minutes north of San Diego in Escondido. It’s the San Diego Safari Park , and it is equally as cool as the San Diego Zoo yet has a completely different feel.

If you only have time to visit one, we’ve got a comparison between the two zoos to help you decide. But I definitely recommend spending time at both.

While the San Diego Zoo is right in the middle of the city and focuses on all kinds of animals, the Safari Park has more space and focuses much more on conservation efforts . It actually started as a space for animals to breed, because they found that the smaller enclosures of the regular San Diego Zoo were not conducive to their breeding and conservation efforts.

One thing I love about the Safari Park is how it tends to be less crowded and there is a lot more space. While the San Diego Zoo has more animals to see, the Safari Park focuses more on African animals and feels like a breath of fresh air (can you tell I’m *maybe* a little biased toward the Safari Park?).

Balboa Park

Balboa Park is San Diego’s main park. And it’s not just a park in the traditional sense. There are lots of major attractions here including museums , the San Diego Zoo, special gardens, and more. (My favorite is the Botanical Building!)

When traveling with kids (or honestly, even just adults) here are some of the best things you can do in Balboa Park (aside from the San Diego Zoo of course):

  • Fleet Science Center
  • San Diego Natural History Museum
  • San Diego Air & Space Museum
  • San Diego Model Railroad Museum
  • Spanish Village Arts Center
  • California Tower
  • Ride the Tram
  • Ride the Carousel

Read more about things to do in Balboa Park here.

mission trip with family

Old Town is the earliest San Diego European settlement. Now it’s an open air park with historical buildings . And while there is a section that is the official Old Town State Park, it is also an area of town (next to the state park) which shopping, restaurants, and other historic sites (like the most haunted house in America).

Our favorite thing by far was the Casa de Estudillo, a historic house with rooms you can tour. But there are lots of other historical buildings with interactive elements and historical reenactors. You can visit the schoolhouse, the newspaper office, the stables, and more.

Read more about things to do in Old Town here.

USS Midway Museum

mission trip with family

The USS Midway Museum is an aircraft carrier turned museum in the Embarcadero (waterfront area) of San Diego. There are all kinds of interactive elements. You can tour in the insides of the ship and see where people slept and worked and went to the doctor. You can see all kinds of aircraft on the top of the ship. And you can even climb into a flight simulator.

Kids will also love their Junior Pilots program , which sends them on a scavenger hunt around the museum and then rewards them with a pair of Junior Pilot Wings.

Maritime Museum of San Diego

mission trip with family

I feel like the Maritime of Museum of San Diego is one of the most underrated museums in the city! It’s right down the street from the USS Midway Museum, so you could easily visit both of them in the same day.

This is a museum all about historic ships . The main exhibits are in a large historic steam ferry, where you can see all kinds of model ships and other sailing information. But surrounding it on the water are several other ships you can explore including the H.M.S. Surprise from the popular Master and Commander series (it’s actually the one they shot the movie one!) and the Star of India which is the world’s oldest sailing ship.

They also have excursions you can book that will take you out on these boats!

You can’t take a family vacation to San Diego and not go see the sea lions and seals in La Jolla!

This area is about a 25 minute drive from downtown San Diego, and you can walk along the coast stopping at a few beaches or tide pools and seeing the wildlife.

Start at the Cave Store , when you can pay a fee to climb down to a sea cave. Then walk along the La Jolla Coast Walk Trail from there to Children’s Beach (which is definitely not meant for children swimming because the sea lions and seals have taken it over).

But there are several beach areas you can enjoy like Shell Beach and La Jolla Cove. Ellen Browning Scripps Park is also near by with lots of picnic areas and room for kids to run around.

Birch Aquarium

Located just north of the La Jolla cove area is the Birch Aquarium . It’s a super popular aquarium for families to visit!

Some highlights include:

  • Tidepool Plaza with touch tanks
  • Hall of Fishes with all kinds of exhibits
  • Beyster Family Little Blue Penguins colony (the smallest penguins in the world!)
  • Blue Beach, a large outdoor area with play elements and family seating
  • Shark Shores exhibit devoted entirely to sharks

This is really such a beautiful place, set right along the coast so you can enjoy the views and and aquarium at the same time!

Torrey Pines

Torrey Pines is another beautiful area along the California coast! It’s just a little further north from Birch Aquarium, and one of the popular things to do here is to watch the paragliders (or even go paragliding yourself!).

You can stop by the Torrey Pines Gliderport to watch paragliders soar over the ocean off the cliffs, or book a tandem flight for yourself.

And then of course there’s lots of hiking and beaches in Torrey Pines State Reserve . But know that this area does not have a lot of shade, so be prepared for that.

Belmont Park

mission trip with family

Belmont Park is like an old-fashioned boardwalk amusement park, and it’s so much fun! It’s been open since 1925 and is right on Mission Beach.

There’s tons to do here that families will enjoy, including amusement park/carnival rides, rock climbing, an arcade, laser tag, and more.

It’s also home to the Giant Dipper, a historic wooden roller coaster that is super fun but will also have you reaching for the ibuprofen afterwards.

Plus, since Belmont Park is right next to Mission Beach , you can enjoy both the amusement park and some beach time in the same afternoon.

Coronado Island

Coronado Island is a island near San Diego that especially known the the historic Hotel del Coronado . But there are lots of other things to do on this island too, including beaches, shopping and dining, and playgrounds.

You can get to Coronado Island by driving over the bridge, taking a ferry, or on the Old Town Trolley Tour. The ferry has you arrive right at Centennial Park (and I mean, what kid doesn’t love a ferry ride?), which is a great spot for views of downtown San Diego. It’s also right at the end of Orange Avenue , which is where most of the popular shops and dining spots on Coronado are.

The New Children’s Museum

The New Children’s Museum is a museum dedicated to inspiring kids with art and creativity . It’s located in downtown San Diego, and would be a great activity for days when you want some inside time.

The museum is full of colorful murals and art installations that will attract kids’ eyes, as well as interactive elements and play spaces that help them be creative. Kids can step backstage at a theater, explore the world of sound, and even play in a crocheted playground.

LEGOLAND California is a kid’s paradise! Especially if they are into Lego!

It’s located about 40 minutes north of San Diego, near Carlsbad. So you will have to drive to get there, but if you’re traveling to San Diego with kids you will probably want to make sure you add this to your list!

Besides Lego-themed rides , there’s also a full water park, the SEA LIFE aquarium, and Lego hotels you can stay at if you want to spend a full day here and spend the night. (You could also stop here on your way up to Anaheim if you want to include a Disneyland trip in your Southern California plans.)

Seaworld San Diego

SeaWorld San Diego is closer to San Diego than LEGOLAND California, so it might make more sense as a theme park choice for some families.

Now, I know that SeaWorld faces criticism for how they have obtained their animals in the past (among other issues), and rightly so. But they’ve also done a lot in the past years to focus more on attractions and rollercoasters and created a family-friendly theme park. So if you have a coaster lover in your family, you might want to make the trip to SeaWorld.

Where to Stay in San Diego

There are so many great hotels in San Diego! Here are a few suggestions:

  • Hotel del Coronado — Luxury and a historic hotel in Coronado Island. It’s a Hilton hotel, and they also offer a kids club!
  • Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego — A large hotel right in downtown San Diego. It gets great reviews, but know that people often stay here for conventions (so it can feel a bit more corporate).
  • La Jolla Shores Hotel — A family-friendly hotel in La Jolla that’s right on the beach!
  • Bahia Resort Hotel — A great budget resort option with water access in Mission Bay.

There are lots of great other hotel and VRBO options in San Diego too, which you can see on the map below.

Where to Eat with Kids in San Diego

Just like hotels, there are so many great kid-friendly restaurants in San Diego! Here are some we really enjoyed.

  • Atypical Waffle — Funky spot for gourmet waffles!
  • Communal Coffee — A coffee shop/baker that also has an adorable shop.
  • Crack Shack — The best place in San Diego for fried chicken.
  • Edgewater Grill — Views of the water in Seaport Village!
  • Duke’s — A great spot in La Jolla with a large outdoor seating area.
  • Station Tavern — Burgers, and again some great outdoor space (are we sense a theme here?).

Tips for Planning Your San Diego Family Vacation

  • If you are traveling with kids, we highly recommend going in October! In San Diego, October is Kids Free San Diego month, where kids get in free (with their paying adult) to many attractions including the San Diego Zoo, LEGOLAND, and more. Plus many hotels offer perks like free kids meals with a paying adult.
  • Rent a car. San Diego is a very driving-centric city, especially since some of the most popular attractions like LEGOLAND and La Jolla are a bit of a drive outside of central San Diego.
  • Wear sunscreen and hat! Protect yourself from the Southern California sun.
  • Be safe at the beach. Know the ocean conditions and follow beach safety guidelines.
