The most iconic end-of-season Gran Fondo. Muro di Sormano and Ghisallo make it extremely technical. Numerous participants ready to make it unforgettable, what are you waiting for?
Start: Cantù
The start is set in the city of Cantù and the first 25 km follow the constant undulations of the roads of Brianza, up to Maglio.
The Muro di Sormano
The following 7 kilometres, leading the riders to the hill of Sormano, are the hardest yet the most exciting of the race. The last two kilometres of this climb, the iconic MURO DI SORMANO, a totem in worldwide cycling – are the climax of the race. Here, the route climbs steeply with an average 15.8% gradient, topping out at 27%. The writings on the tarmac and the signage at the side of the road will be there to provide Gran Fondo athletes with the experience of a real Pro. Less experienced riders may take a 2 km detour allowing them to reach the summit along a milder climb.
The Ghisallo
After a sharp descent diving into Nesso, the route levels out briefly and then undulates again, up to Regatola, where the athletes tackle the second climb of the day, the GHISALLO. Gradients are high, but not as steep as in Sormano. The climb is not too complicated, and the route winds its way in an enjoyable landscape. The most combative athletes may grind out the bigger gears. The average slope is 6.2% over 9 km, topping out at 14% towards the end. On the summit, the riders will be welcomed by the bells of Madonna del Ghisallo and by the most famous museum in cycling history. At the top of the Ghisallo, 70 km into the Gran Fondo, the riders have covered nearly two-thirds of the route, and the hardest parts are behind them.
Finish: Cantù
A long (nearly 20 km) and broad descent leads them to Merone, allowing them to rest their legs before the final 20 kilometres, climbing again in short and steep spurts until they reach the finish at the heart of Cantù.

Il Lombardia 2023: Preview, full schedule and how to watch live action
The 117th edition of Giro di Lombardia is scheduled for Saturday 7 October with stars Tadej Pogacar, Primoz Roglic and Remco Evenepoel vying for the final cycling monument of the season.

'The Race of the Falling Leaves': Il Lombardia 2023 marks the conclusion of the road cycling season for many riders in the peloton.
This edition of the race, the fifth and final monument of the year, starts in Como and ends in Bergamo , covering a distance of 238 kilometres with over 4,400 metres of elevation gain.
Twenty-five teams, each consisting of seven riders, will participate in the race. Slovenian superstar Tadej Pogacar will be aiming for a hat-trick, having triumphed in the last two editions.
However, Pogacar will face a strong challenge from his compatriot, the 2023 Giro d’italia winner Primoz Roglic , and the former La Vuelta champion Remco Evenepoel .

Cycling, uec road european championships 2023: christophe laporte wins men’s road race in thrilling finale, il lombardia 2023: route.
The route for Il Lombardia 2023 spans 238 kilometres long and features a series of challenging climbs in the Lombardy region of Italy.
It closely mirrors the route of the 2021 edition, where Pogacar secured his first victory in the race, ahead of Italian rider Fausto Masnada .
In total, there are seven categorised climbs, with the pivotal moment likely to occur at the Passo Di Ganda (9.2km 7.3%), whose summit is reached 32 kilometres from the finish.
The final hurdle, situated three kilometres before the finish line in Bergamo, is the Colle Aperto climb (1.3 km 7.0%). Riders lacking a strong finishing kick will try to open a gap here to avoid a sprint finish after the final descent into the city.
Il Lombardia 2023: Riders to wartch
A thrilling showdown is expected on the steep climbs of Lombardy, featuring cycling heavyweights Tadej Pogacar , Primoz Roglic and Remco Evenepoel .
Two-time Tour de France championr Pogacar aims to join the ranks of Sean Kelly , Gino Bartoli , Henri Pélissier , Costante Girardengo , Gaetano Belloni and Damiano Cunego with three Il Lombardia victories.
Tokyo 2020 Olympic time trial champion Roglic is set to compete in his final race for Jumbo-Visma, as he confirmed his departure before Saturday’s Giro dell'Emilia, which he won ahead of fellow Slovenian Pogacar.
Time trial world champion Evenepoel has not raced since the Vuelta a España, where he claimed the mountains classification besides three stages. Having won the Liège - Bastogne - Liège this season and the previous, the Belgian has proved that he has the strength to win another hilly monument.
Enric Mas crossed the finish line in Como alongside Pogacar last year, ultimately losing out to the Slovenian in the sprint. In the Giro dell'Emilia, the Spaniard finished fourth, indicating he's a strong contender for victory again this year.
Il Lombardia also marks the conclusion of Thibaut Pinot ’s illustrious career. The 33-year-old Frenchman claimed the Italian classic in 2018 and has notched stage wins in all the three Grand Tours.
Il Lombardia 2023: Schedule
Il Lombardia is to start at 10:35 Central European Time (CET) on Saturday 7 October.
The riders are expected to reach the finish line in Bergamo around 17:00.
Il Lombardia 2023: How to watch
The race will be available on live TV and streaming on the Global Cycling Network , Eurosport and Discovery+ in Europe - including the UK.

Il Lombardia reveals 2023 route featuring meaningful route changes
Il Lombardia organizers have revealed the route for 2022, which lacks the presence of some of the race's most iconic climbs, but features the return of others as the finish returns to Como.
The race will feature 253 kilometers this year, making it an incredibly long race with a very high amount of climbing. Unlike last year, the race starts in Bergamo, and features the Passo di Ganda - where the decisive attack happened last year - early on in the race. Heading to Como however, it is also noticeable the disappearance of the Muro di Sormano, the ultra-steep climb is unlikely to make a return (at least anytime soon) due to it's dangerous descent, which has seen several vicious crashes in the last few years which gave way to safety concerns.
Van der Poel "thought I could fix it myself" - Dutchman opens up about World Championships drama
The route will hence go through the Madonna del Ghisallo as is traditional, before tackling the final combination of climbs at Civiglio and San Fermo della Bataglia, last used in 2020, where the race will be decided - as has been the case on several editions, with many iconic attacks up and down Civiglio sparking to memory.
The Italian monument will also be the final race in the career of two benchmark riders. One being one of the nation's finest and most successful ever riders Vincenzo Nibali, who's won the race twice throughout his career. On the other side, Alejandro Valverde will also be hanging up his wheels after arriving at the finish in Como, both are expected to receive an exponential amount of attention.
Jonathan Milan: “I can’t believe I did it! This is something incredible, I was always on the podium but never on the first step"
Last year the race was won by Tadej Pogacar, who attacked in the penultimate climb of the race, and then outsprinted Fausto Masnada who had managed to bridge across afterwards.
