How To Plan Your Perfect Marriage Proposal On A Cruise

Congratulations! If you're reading this article about planning a proposal aboard a cruise ship then that means you are probably in a strong relationship and looking for the right way to take things to the next level. Whether your idea of the perfect proposal is getting down on one knee in the dining room on a formal night or popping the question from the comfort and privacy of your private cabana, this is going to be a big moment for both of you.

Why A Cruise Ship Is The Perfect Setting For A Proposal

Cruises are incredibly romantic. No other vacation option or setting for a proposal can compare to exploring exotic locations, postcard-perfect sunsets, fine dining experiences at specialty restaurants, and impeccable service that makes it possible to ignore everything else besides just having a great time. In fact, A 2018  Cruise Lines International Association  (CLIA) report found that cruises are 70 percent better for romantic getaways than land-based vacations.

When planning your picture-perfect proposal, remember to approach each aspect strategically. Forgetting a few key steps, such as ordering the ring too late or not informing the cruise line about your big plans, can cause hurdles along the way.

Start Planning the Engagement Proposal Plans Early

While many aspects of your ultimate romantic getaway ... and ultimately a perfect cruise proposal will be executed by the crew as well as potentially the cruise director, you are the one that needs to prepare the plans.

For This guide, we're going to divide that into two buckets of tasks that you need to do. The first is things you need to plan to happen on the cruise ship and the second is things that you need to prepare on land. If you plan ahead properly, these two groups of tasks will come together perfectly and she (or he) will respond with an overwhelming expression of joy as they accept your proposal.

While there's no reason why you can't grab a last-minute cruise deal, the process of planning ahead for your cruise proposal will probably take place over at least 2-3 months - though it could be far longer.

Find a Travel Advisor Who Can Help You Plan

On just a normal cruise vacation, your travel advisor can be a huge help with navigating various policies and making sure that you are prepared to have a great time. However, when you add an engagement to the mix, it is even more important that you have someone on your side to make sure things go smoothly.

Some of the things that your travel advisor can help you with include:

Coordinating your plans with the cruise line

Booking excursions

Making dinner and entertainment reservations

Sharing inside tips on the ship that you've selected so that you can make it extra romantic

Offering advice on what others have done, so that you can be 100% prepared

Best of all, the services from a travel advisor like Heather at Flow Voyages will be absolutely free when you book with her since she is paid by the cruise line.

Pick The Perfect Date and Destination For Your Cruise

When it comes to planning your engagement proposal at sea, it is very important to select the right cruise line, ship, destination, and itinerary. Not only will this show your future life partner that you know what they like but there are certain things such as weather that will be better at certain times of year than others and destinations that are only available during certain seasons.

Likewise, certain cruise ships may have unique features that will make the moment extra special and certain cruise lines might bring back memories of a special moment earlier in your courtship.

For example, while Carnival tends to be more tacky it is known as "The Fun Ships" for a reason. If you both like rowdy, late-night piano bar parties with lots of drinking, a proposal cruise aboard a Carnival cruise might be a great idea. Or if you are looking for something relaxing with great food and plenty of opportunity to enjoy time together, Holland America Line is a great option. On the other hand, if you are both foodies and don't want to be surrounded by kids and families then a proposal cruise on any one of the Virgin Voyages cruise ships might be a better choice.

Design The Perfect Ring

The engagement ring is the most important element of a proposal. Ordering the ring too late can be risky, especially if it is a custom ring. The turnaround time for a custom engagement ring can vary depending on the complexity of the design and the type of center stone you select.

When you have a fixed departure date, give yourself lots of time to design your ring. Consider starting at least 12 weeks early to avoid feeling stressed. Consult a reputable jeweler who creates  custom designed engagement rings  to craft the perfect one for your partner. A streamlined team of dedicated jewelers can turn your dreams into reality by offering insight into the design process. The more time you have, the simpler it will be for you to work with a designer and carefully select each design detail, such as the center stone, setting, and band.

Consider Inviting Friends And Family

Many elements, such as decoration, music, and photography, come together to create the perfect proposal. Attempting to tackle all these elements at the last minute can be stressful, especially on a cruise where you cannot leave to complete a last-minute task after boarding. A study found that  1 in 4 grooms plan their marriage proposal  “down to the last detail” over 4.4 months. Although there is no right or wrong time to start planning your proposal, planning it early can help you surprise your significant other successfully.

Start planning the proposal as early as possible to avoid complications on the day. This involves ordering any items you need, creating a playlist, and booking a photographer. If you’re going on a more extended cruise, you could ask a friend or family to take the photos. For trips only with your partner, use a tripod and learn the camera settings or seek help from cruise staff members.

Discuss Your Plans with the Cruise Line Prior To Sailing

There's no requirement to connect with the cruise line before you embark on your cruise but if you are hoping for any special consideration such as perhaps hiding the ring in a desert, reserving a special table for the perfect sunset view at dinner, or anything that might involve the crew, you should certainly contact the cruise line prior to sailing.

Planning a big proposal without informing the crew can lead to complications while boarding or during setup. This may ruin your surprise or your proposal may turn out differently than you imagined.

Contact the company you will be cruising with ahead of time to discuss your plan. A conversation with them will ensure that they are informed of the occasion and they may offer helpful suggestions. For instance, they may know the best spot on the ship to propose or they may be able to offer special engagement packages that include having your room steward decorate your room with rose petals or a photographer who can make sure that your special moment is captured on film.

Involving them in the planning process may help you improve your proposal and include elements you haven’t thought of initially.

Connect With The Cruise Director Once On The Ship

While you may have connected with the shore-side team weeks or even months before, it would be prudent to visit guest services on day one of your cruise and ask to connect with the Cruise Director. This person will likely be experienced in knowing what other couples have done in a similar situation and can offer additional suggestions.

Additionally, while cruise lines are pretty good at making sure that requests made prior to sailing are honored, sometimes things can fall through the cracks. By connecting with the Cruise Director, you can make sure that everything you hoped to do is still scheduled.

A cruise is a beautiful place to start a new chapter of your life as a couple. It offers picture-perfect views, the sounds of the ocean, and the ideal backdrop for photos. But it’s important to be careful when planning the proposal to avoid hurdles. Use this guide to plan the perfect proposal and give your partner a surprise they will never forget!

How Do You Propose on a Cruise Ship?

By Anna Duncan

cruise wedding proposal ideas

Getting engaged is one of the most romantic things a couple can do together. Proposing on a cruise ship can make the moment even more special, with a beautiful backdrop and plenty of romantic activities. If you’re ready to pop the question, here’s how to plan the perfect cruise ship proposal.

Choose the Destination

The first step in planning your proposal is picking out a destination. Cruises offer a variety of exciting and exotic locations, so take some time to find one that appeals to you both. Consider your budget and the amount of time you have available for your trip.

Choose Your Ship

Once you’ve chosen your destination, it’s time to pick out your cruise ship. Cruise ships come in all shapes and sizes, so think about what kind of experience you want to have. Some ships are more luxurious than others, while some are more family-friendly and offer plenty of activities for kids.

Plan an Unforgettable Moment

Now that you know where you’re going, it’s time to think about how you want to propose. Think about what type of setting would be most romantic for your partner.

Some people like to keep it simple with a sunset stroll on deck or a private dinner in their cabin. Others prefer something more elaborate like organizing a scavenger hunt or renting out an exclusive area on the ship for their special moment.

Make It Special

When it comes to proposing, it’s important to make sure your partner feels special. Plan ahead by having some champagne or flowers ready when they arrive at their surprise location. You can also add personal touches like writing them a love letter or playing their favorite song in the background.

Book Your Trip

Once everything is planned out and ready to go, it’s time to book your cruise! Make sure you plan ahead and book early so that you get the best deals on fares and rooms. Check with your cruise line for any discounts they may offer for couples booking trips together.

  • Here's What to Know About Planning a Cruise Ship Wedding

A woman in a wedding dress and a bridal bouquet standing with her husband at the beach

Once you're over the initial excitement of your recent proposal, you'll have to start planning your wedding. Maybe you're not interested in the idea of a traditional church wedding, or you're looking through your options and want something a little different. Either way, tying the knot at sea is an increasingly popular choice, and one you might be curious about.

That said, you may not know the first thing about cruise ship wedding ceremonies. How do they work? What should you keep in mind? We'll delve into the key details you'll need to know.

Why a Cruise Ship Wedding?

It's best to book in advance, check for wedding packages, cruises may not appeal to everyone, show caution with in-port weddings, make sure it's a legal wedding ceremony, choose the right cruise line, planning your cruise ship wedding.

You might be on the fence about planning a cruise ship wedding, as they aren't the most typical arrangement. It helps to know the benefits of a cruise ship wedding and how they differ from a standard reception. In truth, many people find that the perks of a cruise ship marriage far outweigh those of a traditional setup.

To start, cruises are often more affordable. Since entertainment is part of the package on cruise ships — and guests are free to visit the bar on their own — you won't have to spend nearly as much on music or alcohol. A cruise ship also presents a number of opportunities for fun, interesting pictures.

Start our FREE cruise price alerts to never miss a deal again.

If you've asked your friends or family members for advice on booking a cruise ship, you might have heard that you'll save the most money when you book at the last second. In reality, it's better to book sooner rather than later if you're looking for the best deals.

There's a common misconception that cruise lines slash their prices as they inch closer to the departure date. However, cruise ships are likeliest to provide the best rates when they offer their first sale, and the prices tend to inflate as time goes on. Plus, those who book their cruise early on are far more likely to receive complimentary gifts and bonuses due to their advanced bookings.

Not every cruise line that's caught your eye will offer onboard weddings. Fortunately, most cruise lines do. Connect with a travel agency or browse through your options online to see if there are cruises offering shipboard wedding ceremonies. Sometimes, cruise lines will offer package deals where you can plan your honeymoon directly following the wedding ceremony.

There's a chance that a few people on your guest list are prone to sea sickness. If your cruise takes place on especially choppy water, this could spell disaster for the land-lovers in your life. While this shouldn't be the only factor to consider when you're planning a sea-based wedding ceremony, it's important to consider, nonetheless.

On your end, you may find a cruise wedding a little less intimate as well. It's not uncommon to be close to strangers during your ceremony, especially while dining or engaging in your daily activities.

Cruises aren't a one-stop destination, which adds to the trill for most passengers. Still, that doesn't mean you should plan your entire wedding around the intended stopping points of the cruise ship, either.

Sometimes, cruises cancel in-port weddings due to unforeseen weather circumstances . From unpredictable hurricane warnings to storms that prevent ships from stopping at certain islands or beaches, there are many different risk factors at play. Don't make your entire cruise ship wedding contingent on your in-port ceremony.

Unlike traditional wedding ceremonies that feature a clergy member or a vow master, cruise-based weddings can be a bit trickier when it comes to legally certifying your vows. If you have a wedding planner, discuss the legality of your wedding at sea before you make the commitment.

Couples will sometimes decide to finalize the legal paperwork in advance of their wedding so that they can enjoy their cruise worry-free.

Certain cruise lines may offer a wedding package, but they aren’t all equal. You’ll want to choose the best cruise line for your specific needs. To that end, you have  a long list of options , including these top five choices.

  • Windstar Cruises : This cruise line is one of the leading options for soon-to-be-married couples. You’ll enjoy more personal treatment with uncrowded ships and an attentive staff.
  • Princess Cruises : As the first cruise line to offer onboard weddings, Princess Cruises has pioneered the practice. Their experience separates them from other cruise lines.
  • Royal Caribbean : With help from a “romance specialist,” the cruise program administrator and other professionals, you can plan your wedding to the most minute detail with Royal Caribbean.
  • Norwegian Cruise Line : If you take a trip with Norwegian Cruise Line, you can opt for a harborside ceremony and get married on the ship while it’s in port – perfect for both sailing and non-sailing guests.
  • Crystal Cruises : Work with a Crystal Celebrations consultant to plan your dream wedding, whether you want your ceremony on a beach in Bali or the hills of Tuscany.

With so many options, which will you choose?

Planning the ceremony and reception, guest accommodations and activities, tips for planning a cruise wedding.

If you and your future spouse love to set sail and explore new locales, getting married at sea may be the perfect option for your wedding — and it comes with plenty of built-in benefits and amenities. What’s more, explains T+L A-List travel advisor and Q Cruise + Travel president Rob Clabbers, “The advantage of a wedding on a ship is that a lot of amenities and facilities are available — albeit it an extra charge in some cases: beautiful spaces, photographers, musicians, DJs, flowers, wedding assistants, bars and restaurants, the option to arrange a separate meal/buffet for your guests, a salon and spa to get ready for a ceremony, and, of course, a ‘built-in’ honeymoon.” Whether you’re dreaming of an intimate elopement or a larger celebration, we tapped several experts to provide insight on everything you need to know about cruise weddings, including the costs, the logistics, accommodations and amenities, and more.

What to Know

kieferpix/Getty Images

Once you’ve officially decided to say “I do” at sea, there are several factors to keep in mind. “At a minimum,” says Farah Barhorst, a director at Holland America Line , “couples should know where, when, and how they want to get married, in addition to the number of guests they would like in attendance.” She notes that many cruise lines put limits on how many visitors can board the ship who aren't sailing its full itinerary, so knowing how many guests plan to join you for your wedding only is crucial. Of course, couples should also consider their desired wedding location as, per the pro, “guest capacity is also limited based on the destination or port.”

As Clabbers explains, you also need to consider the laws of both the country where you'll be located when you get married and the country that runs your ship. “Many cruise ships are registered in the Bahamas, Bermuda, or Malta,” Clabbers notes, meaning “the laws of [that] specific country would apply to any ceremonies performed on board once the ship is in international waters.” There may then be limits on where same-sex ceremonies can take place. “Since the Bahamas and Bermuda, for example, don’t recognize same-sex marriage, same-sex couples can’t get legally married at sea on ships registered in those countries. They could potentially get married while in port in the U.S.A. or certain places in Europe,” he says.

For these and other reasons, Keith Willard , a wedding planner specializing in destination weddings, stresses the importance of planning ahead. "The first thing that many overlook is the marriage certificate itself," he says. "The easiest thing to do is to get a marriage license within 60 days of your wedding and bring it with you.” Stacey Johnston , a travel advisor at Marvelous Mouse Travels, echoes these sentiments, explaining that “you will need to arrange for the marriage license ahead of your cruise from the port or the departure location depending on where you are getting married.”

To avoid mishaps with locations and licenses, some couples choose to have a wedding celebration on a cruise but get legally married elsewhere. On a Holland America Line ship, for instance, “The captain can perform a ‘symbolic’ ceremony that is not legally binding,” says Barhorst. If you want the wedding-at-sea experience with fewer logistical headaches, a compromise like this may be for you.

Nadtochiy/Getty Images

According to Clabbers, “Many cruise lines that offer weddings will provide a range of packages to choose from, with ceremonies from two to over 100 attendees that may include the services from the officiant, a celebration venue, recorded or live music, a cake, Champagne or other beverages for guests, a dinner for the wedding couple, and other extras.” To provide to-be-weds with a better idea of what to expect, we’ve compiled a few packages from several cruise lines.

Holland America Line

Holland America Line currently offers a handful of wedding packages , including the Symbolic at Sea Package, which, per Barhorst, includes a non-legal ceremony performed by the captain or an officer; coordination by both onboard and pre-cruise wedding coordinators; recorded ceremony music; a keepsake wedding certificate; basic photography service, including one 8” x 10” photo of choice and a commemorative wedding album; sparkling wine; a nine-inch wedding cake; and a bridal bouquet with a dozen roses and a matching groom’s boutonniere. The Anchors Away Package includes all of the above but with a legal ceremony (led by a non-denominational officiant), as well as priority check-in for the couple during embarkation. Lastly, couples craving a true destination wedding can book the Ashore Package, which “lets couples officially tie the knot on a beach, garden, or glacier location,” says Barhorst. “A seasonal bridal bouquet and boutonniere will be provided in addition to a pre-cruise and ashore wedding coordinator to ensure all runs smoothly.”

Princess Cruises

Princess Cruises offers three distinct packages to choose from via its Princess Perfect Weddings department. The Perfect Pair Package includes the couple and up to two guests, while the ceremony-only package, aptly named Timeless Ceremony at Sea, includes the couple and up to eight guests. Lastly, the Timeless Wedding at Sea package is the line's most elaborate. It comes with a ceremony and a reception for the couple and up to 18 guests, plus extras like salon services and specialty dining reservations for the bride and groom. All three Princess packages include fresh florals, photography, and an indoor or outdoor ceremony officiated by the ship’s captain.

Margaritaville at Sea

Margaritaville at Sea launched in April 2022 and offers warm-weather sailings from Palm Beach and Tampa. It has three aptly named wedding packages : Paradise, Elation, and Bliss. Paradise is the most extravagant, offering live music, full photography services, and an upgraded venue complete with panoramic views. Elation is the mid-range option, with a reception dinner, DJ services, and ceremony photography, and Bliss serves as the line’s basic package for intimate soirees. At all three levels, couples enjoy perks like a personal wedding coordinator, an officiant, a keepsake wedding certificate, a bridal bouquet and matching boutonniere, priority check-in, dinner at the onboard steakhouse, and a wedding cake.

Royal Caribbean

This mega-ship ocean line has four wedding packages , including the Vows at Sea Package, which allows couples to choose from an array of onboard venues and includes dinner for two at a specialty restaurant, a bottle of bubbly, special stateroom decor, and more. With the Embark on Romance Package, you can invite sailing and non-sailing guests to watch you tie the knot with a ceremony on embarkation day, which includes many of the aforementioned amenities plus priority check-in for the couple. The smallest at-sea package, Intimately Yours, includes a ceremony for the couple and up to 10 guests, while the Destinations I Do package is ideal for those who want a great on-land backdrop for their wedding. With Destinations I Do, couples get married either on board or on land while the ship is in port; transportation to and from the venue is included if you choose the on-land option.

Carnival Cruise Line

Another mega-ship ocean line, Carnival offers three wedding packages . The Signature Ceremony is the line's smallest but still offers plenty of perks: a ceremony for up to 10 guests (including the couple), pre-recorded ceremony music, a pre-cruise wedding planner, priority embarkation assistance, a local officiant, a keepsake wedding certificate, a cake, a sparkling wine toast, photography (plus a canvas print), shipboard decor, and a honeymoon dinner for the newlyweds. Service charges, which include gratuities, are also covered. Those looking to host an onboard reception following the ceremony can book the It’s a Celebration! package for a minimum of 20 guests, including the couple. Alternatively, say “I do” off the ship by booking the Love Ashore package, where couples can tie the knot in a dreamy beach or garden ceremony. For extra amenities, add on the Diamond Enhancement Package, which comes with perks like a mimosa-fueled breakfast, chocolate-covered strawberries delivered to the couple’s stateroom, a bottle of bubbly, a 30-minute couples massage, and more.

Disney Cruise Line

For a fairy-tale-worthy wedding at sea, Disney Cruise Line has you covered. Their standard cruise ceremony package includes up to 16 guests (excluding the couple), while food and drink services, florals, and entertainment can all be added on for an extra cost. Couples can also choose to get married off the ship at Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay. For more information, including specific venue options, visit the Disney's Fairy Tale Weddings and Honeymoons website .

As noted above, many cruise lines offer wedding coordinators to ensure everything runs smoothly so that you and your soon-to-be spouse can sit back, relax, and soak up the blissful, celebratory vibes. In terms of what to expect from the ceremony and what kind of venues are available, “There can be quite a variety,” says Clabbers. For example, “Some ships have a chapel or space dedicated to weddings and ceremonies; others use a lounge, restaurant, or private room.” Again, since this will all vary by the cruise line and/or the specific package you pick, your best bet is to do your research by combing through the wedding package offerings online or calling the company directly.

The same thing goes for receptions, explains Allison DePesa , a travel advisor with Marvelous Mouse Travels. For example, “You could opt for a dinner in a specialty restaurant or something more opulent in a main dining room, which would offer more space for guests and a DJ.” Willard also urges to-be-weds to remember that the time of their onboard reception will likely be “based on what the cruise line has available, which means the times may be from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., or even 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.” He explains, “A traditional five-hour event with an hour ceremony on the cruise between the hours of 5 p.m. and midnight is almost never done for groups larger than 20 people.”

ParfonovaIuliia/Getty Images

Good news: Couples getting married on a cruise are privy to discounts and other perks. According to DePesa, “With as few as eight cabins, you qualify as a group with most cruise lines. You'll receive discounted rates, onboard credits, cocktail parties, etc., depending on the number of staterooms booked.” Barhorst notes that similar perks apply on Holland America, explaining that, if a couple books a group of eight staterooms for their wedding crew, they're “eligible to receive a stateroom category upgrade up to Suite level, completely complimentary.”

According to Johnston, when setting up your room block, it’s a good idea to offer several category options — she recommends reserving balcony, oceanview, and interior staterooms — “since your wedding guests may have a variety of budgetary ranges.” Also, says Willard, “Unlike a hotel room block, your cruise rate can fluctuate for your guests, so it is important to book early” since “the earlier you book, typically the better the price point.” Be sure to keep an eye on cut-off dates, though. Some cruise lines will deactivate contracted room-block rates and links a set time before the sailing (90 days, for instance), meaning guests booking after that point would be on their own to find a stateroom.

When it comes to onboard activities and programming, Willard says that “there are opportunities at every turn for shared group experiences.” For example, “Dining in the main dining hall can be for groups [of] up to 20 people per table," while groups of 30 or more may even be able to book whole private sections of the dining room. On the flip side, cruising is also great because everyone in the group — or, in this case, the wedding party — can do their own thing without being tied to a specific schedule. So, while some guests might prefer to lounge by the pool or relax in the spa, others may take advantage of other onboard amenities, like an escape room, laser tag, waterslides, and more, depending on the specific line and ship.

While standard wedding packages will vary depending on the cruise line and number of guests, Clabbers says they can “range from anywhere from $2,000 to $5,000 and up,” and most of the advisors we spoke to concurred.

That said, budget-conscious couples can find a few under-$2,000 options, including the aforementioned Signature Ceremony package on Carnival and the Symbolic at Sea package on Holland America Line, both of which clock in at $1,800. Also — at least on Holland America Line — “seasonal price surcharges of $100 to $200 should also be taken into account during peak nuptial times and holidays, including Christmas Day, Valentine's Day, and the beginning of summer,” says Barhorst. Similarly, while some purposely intimate packages include only a small number of guests, extra guests can sometimes be added at a per-person price. Be sure to inquire about fees, too, particularly for on-shore events.

When budgeting for your cruise wedding, remember that “the cost of legal documentations and permits is extra and needs to be planned far in advance — at least 90 days but ideally more,” explains Clabbers. Sue Allen, a travel consultant at Destination Weddings Travel Group & Celebration Travel , expressed similar sentiments and noted that “legal weddings have an additional fee” compared to symbolic (or non-legal) ones.

Per the pro, “Marriage license fees for in-destination weddings can range from $200 to $700,” while a shipboard maritime license fee is around $900. Allen also cautions couples to be wary of non-refundable deposits. While the initial cruise price may be lower, “if something comes up and you are not able to travel, you lose your deposit or pay a fee to change your travel dates.” With that being said, it’s always a good idea to purchase cruise insurance .

Lastly, DePesa urges couples to keep in mind that “the wedding does not include the fare for the actual cruise.” In fact, the cruise fare(s) can vary drastically depending on the time of year, length of itinerary, and line. If you’re not sailing on a truly all-inclusive line, you and your guests can expect to pay extra for features such as Wi-Fi, specialty dining, and alcoholic beverages. You’ll also, of course, need to factor in airfare if you’re flying to the embarkation/disembarkation port(s).

Book early and plan ahead.

To secure the best prices for your stateroom block, Johnston recommends planning as early as possible. Willard agrees, telling T+L that cost-conscious couples should create their block at least a year out at minimum. Plus, he says, "Most of the cruise lines will provide incentives, as well.”

Also, as part of the planning process, DePesa advises couples to “get an idea of your guest list, get a sense of who can travel with you, what budgets are like, and what time of year that works best” to ensure you’re selecting a sailing that suits both your and your loved ones’ needs, preferences, and desires.

Keep an open mind and trust your coordinator.

“When planning a wedding at sea, a good practice would be to keep an open mind,” explains Barhorst. This, of course, goes hand-in-hand with putting your trust in the cruise wedding planner. That way, she says, “the less stressful (and easier) it will be for [the couple] to enjoy their time together during the sailing.”

Familiarize yourself with the legalities.

As previously mentioned, the legalities and specifics of a cruise wedding vary greatly depending on where the ship is registered, the port(s) of call, and more. With that in mind, DePesa recommends couples take the time to do some digging and understand the legal requirements to determine “if a symbolic ceremony might just make things easier.”

Decide if a cruise wedding is really for you.

Before going full speed ahead and booking a cruise wedding, it’s crucial to weigh the pros and cons to determine if these types of nuptials are truly what you want. What’s more, says Willard, “A cruise wedding isn't about you specifically outside of the ceremony itself.” Rather, “It's about the shared experience, and your guests may decide that there is something more interesting [to do] on one of the other days.” He also cautions that cruise weddings can mean fewer guests RSVPing yes due to factors like time commitment, budget restraints, and so on.

If you do decide to move forward with a cruise wedding, Barhorst says that “managing the wedding parties’ expectations is also advised, as the structure of cruise weddings differs from the traditional ceremony,”

Cruise Weddings: Everything You Need to Know

Getting married on a cruise is a one-of-a-kind experience. If you're considering having a cruise wedding, here is essential info to help you with the cruise wedding process.

We have included third party products to help you navigate and enjoy life’s biggest moments. Purchases made through links on this page may earn us a commission.

That First Moment

If you’re considering getting married abroad but can’t decide on a single location for your big day, you may want to consider a cruise wedding. Getting married on a cruise allows you and your guests to visit multiple destinations and easily stay close to one another—plus you can all enjoy the amenities a cruise ship has to offer. So, is a cruise wedding right for you? We talked to Heather Marohl of Travel Pros in Virginia Beach, Virginia, Frank Armstrong of Cruise & Vacation Travel in Le Roy, Michigan, and Julie A. Miller of Unlimited Vacations & Cruises in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, to get all the details on cruise weddings.

* Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, cruises are on hold for the time being. Please be sure and check local and federal guidelines before booking.

What types of couples and weddings are cruise weddings best suited for?

According to our pros, cruise weddings can work for a variety of different couples and styles. However, it’s best for those who don’t mind  letting go of the details  and keeping things simple. “From the flowers to the music, cruise weddings tend to be simple and you likely won’t have many choices to pick from, if any,” says Heather. In terms of wedding size, cruise ship weddings tend to work for  smaller guest lists —but some cruises can accommodate larger party sizes. Cruise weddings also can be ideal for couples who  don’t want any guests at all , and who want to combine their wedding or elopement with a unique honeymoon experience.

What are the cost differences between a cruise ship wedding and an “on-land” destination wedding?

“The  traditional destination wedding  is more costly, but you get a lot more options, more security—you are not at the whim of the sea—and you can have more people,” says Heather. “Cruise weddings, first you have to pay for the cruise itself, and then the wedding package. Some companies offer à la carte options, which can add up quickly. You will also have to pay for license fees, which vary by cruise line, per package, per location if you’re getting married on shore.”

How do cruise weddings work? Do couples typically get married on the ship or at a port?

It’s up to you. Some couples choose to get married on the ship before it departs, while others get married on land at a destination port. “If friends and family cannot afford to take the cruise but can be at the wedding, then having it on ship prior to sailing would be the logical choice,” says Frank. “If friends and family can go on the cruise, then there is nothing like being married in a tropical garden or on the beach in a Caribbean island.”

Can you legally get married on a cruise ship?

You’ll have to  take note of legal requirements  when it comes to getting married on a cruise ship or on land. Some countries have residency requirements, meaning you have to reside on the island for a certain period of time in order to legally marry there—not possible if you’re just making a cruise stop. Of course, you could legally marry in your home country before your cruise and have a symbolic wedding at the port. When it comes to getting married on a cruise ship, you’ll need to follow the laws of the country where the ship is registered. So you can easily marry on certain cruise lines’ ships, while there are others where you can’t. Be sure to do your research, talk to a  travel agent who specializes in weddings , and apply for licenses far in advance.

How long of a cruise typically works best for a wedding.

If you’re planning on combining your wedding with a honeymoon, a five to seven-day cruise will likely be ideal. “If the wedding party can sail along with the couple, then the party continues for the entire cruise and that could also be a very memorable event for all,” says Frank.

Which wedding details will a cruise arrange? What is the couple responsible for?

If you’re getting married on the ship, the cruise will typically provide a  wedding coordinator  with their package. “Generally, the cruise line includes the flowers, music, photographer, and officiant (this could be the captain) in the packages, though some of these might cost extra,” says Heather. “The couple is responsible for, but not limited to, registering for their marriage license, their attire, and  the invitations .” If you’re getting married on land, you’ll be responsible for arranging all of the details—and it’s recommended to hire a planner at your wedding location to ensure that everything goes smoothly.

Are there any times of year that should be avoided when it comes to cruise weddings?

“This depends on the destination of your cruise,” says Heather. “The Caribbean’s hurricane season is from June 1 through November 30, so I would avoid booking during this time period as to not have to  deal with any unpredicted storms . The Greek Islands generally close for the off-season. Alaska cruises have a particular set of dates when they allow cruises.” Frank notes that holidays and the family vacation season (summer) can be quite  expensive and crowded  and might not be the best for a cruise wedding.

What are some popular cruise locations for weddings?

The Caribbean is most popular, but again, be aware of residency requirements before booking. St. Thomas, Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, Jamaica, and St. Lucia tend to be popular. But don’t limit yourself to warm-weather locations! Why not try Alaska? Says Heather: “How many people can say they got married on a glacier?” There are also U.S.-based cruises, such as ones that sail along the New England and Canadian coastlines during the fall. Or for something completely different, the famed Queen Mary 2 offers weddings as it sails across the Atlantic Ocean!

What are some popular cruise lines for weddings?

Many cruise lines and companies can accommodate weddings, including Princess Cruises , Disney Cruise Line , Carnival Cruise Line , Crystal Cruises , Celebrity Cruises , Norwegian Cruise Line , and Royal Caribbean , among others. These cruise lines offer a variety of routes and price points so it’s often best to work with a travel agent to find the exact cruise that best suits your desired event.

What can go wrong with a cruise wedding?

Mother Nature pose certain problems when it comes to cruise weddings. Cruises may skip ports due to weather, which can be a risk if you’re planning a wedding on land. And as we’ve seen, cruises can be at greater risk for COVID-19 outbreaks due to the close quarters.

How should you travel with valuable wedding essentials, such as rings and attire?

If you’re hosting a cruise wedding, it’s important to think about how you’ll be transporting your valuable items, such as your rings, attire, and more . When it comes to these items, it’s essential to have them close by at all times—do not check valuable items and do not showcase them out in the open. You might also want to bring a steamer on your trip to ensure that you can straighten out any attire that may become wrinkled in transport.

15 Things You Need to Know When Planning a Cruise Wedding

By Carnival Cruise Line

Ocean breezes carry romance through the air when you have your wedding on a cruise. Whether the ceremony is onboard, at an exotic beach or in a garden, wedding cruises combine your love for each other with your love for travel in beautiful settings. Carnival Cruises will help you plan every detail to create memories that last a lifetime. Here’s what you should know when planning your cruise wedding.

wedding couple looking at the sunset from their cruise ship

1. Your Wedding Can Be in Port or at a Destination Venue

A legal marriage falls under the rules of a country, so your ceremony won’t be on the open seas. Having it onboard a ship at your home port before the cruise sails lets you pick the clergy and invite guests who can’t join you on the cruise. You can also have a shipboard wedding at another port, or choose a destination beach or resort venue to add the exotic scenery of Mexico , the Caribbean , The Bahamas , or Hawaii to your photos.

2. Make Sure Your Marriage Is Legal

You need a marriage license wherever your ceremony is held. Your wedding coordinator will help you understand the requirements at the port where the ceremony will take place, but you need to take care of the details.

3. Pick a Ship That Suits Your Style

Every cruise ship has its own personality! Look for one that matches your own style, with the dining, entertaining and amenity options you’ll enjoy on your honeymoon. Carnival cruise ships have great amenities that you and all your guests will enjoy.

4. Consider Booking Early

Cruise weddings are popular, so make sure you book early to avoid a sold out sailing and be mindful of possible holiday surcharges. You’ll want to consider the weather and the season when you plan your wedding. A good idea is to arrive to the port a day early to ensure that everything is in order and to enjoy the city!

5. Let Your Guests Know Well in Advance

You don’t need to send out the invitations as soon as you book your cruise, but do let your guests know in advance so they can make arrangements to take time off work.

6. Set Up a Wedding Registry

Set up a wedding website and honeymoon registry where you can share information with your guests so they can help create the perfect honeymoon experience as you start your life together.

7. Pick a Good Cruise Length

Pick a cruise itinerary that doesn’t rush your introduction to married life but isn’t too long or too expensive for your guests. A four- to seven-day cruise gives time for the ceremony and doesn’t require too much of their vacation time.

8. Group Rates Make Cruise Weddings Affordable

Book accommodations as a group so that your wedding guests get a better rate . You can even plan group shore excursions. This allows you to turn your wedding into an affordable vacation for your friends and family!

family on dock with carnival ships in the background

9. Make Planning Easy With a Comprehensive Package

Carnival takes the stress out of planning your wedding with a comprehensive package . A wedding planner helps you right from the start, and you’ll have a wedding coordinator on the big day. Packages include everything from the officiant to streamers and cake.

10. Pick a Package That Matches Your Style and Budget

Carnival’s wedding packages offer different inclusions, so you can match your package to your dreams. Choose an elegant sit-down reception, cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, or join your guests at the shipboard buffet. Different tiers allow you to choose your favorite menu selections. You can also enhance your wedding package with flowers, favors, entertainment and other personal touches.

11. Dress for the Occasion

Shipboard life is largely casual, but you’ll still want to dress up for your ceremony. The bride and her attendants should make sure their dresses are easy to get into, especially if your ceremony will be in the home port before sailing. For the guys, it’s easy to look sharp without packing a tux; onboard formalwear rentals can have suits ready in their rooms when they arrive.

Cruise Weddings: All You Need To Know

Destination weddings have long been a romantic and thrilling way to enjoy the fun of travel while starting married life. In recent years, these weddings and other romantic getaways have boomed in demand, especially since people are using these occasions to make time with loved ones rather than waiting for major milestones to go on a big trip. Travel Weekly reports that the romance travel trend is set to continue from 2023 into 2024, considering that the destination wedding market grew from $21.3 billion in 2022 to $28.3 billion in 2023. But aside from hopping on a plane and jet-setting to a new place to get married, some are exploring the novelty and fun of at-sea weddings on cruise ships.

A cruise wedding can be a romantic and unique way to begin your married life. You can enjoy stunning ocean views or visit new destinations while you tie the knot. Cruises can also provide all the essentials for a wedding, such as a dedicated venue, food and drink, overnight accommodations, and other facilities. And with a diverse array of itineraries available across cruise lines, you can choose where to go and have a built-in honeymoon ready to go once you’ve exchanged vows. However, a cruise wedding comes with a lot of considerations you will need to factor in when planning. From choosing a cruise line and package to the number of guests you’ll be bringing, you’ll have to make smart and careful choices for smooth sailing. This guide to cruise weddings can help you navigate the planning process before you embark on a new journey:

Perks of a cruise wedding

Cruise weddings provide a uniquely beautiful and memorable setting and experience for your wedding. Getting married at sea or at a port of call can make for an incredible moment for you, your spouse, and your guests to be celebrated and reminisced for years to come. While cruises may not provide the same flexibility as regular wedding venues, they don’t skimp out on quality. Many cruises offer beautiful indoor or outdoor ceremony locations. You can exchange vows with the ocean as your backdrop or explore elegant indoor venues. The Grand Hall in the Disney Wish ship from Disney Cruise Line showcases how grand these spots can be. The venue comes with a sweeping staircase, a starry chandelier, and a luxurious color palette, which all make for a beautiful wedding environment and a themed one if that’s something on the table for your ceremony. You might not find these venues and views anywhere else either, making it a truly one-of-a-kind experience.

cruise wedding proposal ideas

Cruise lines that allow weddings also pull out all the stops when it comes to organizing your big day. Wedding packages help take care of the details and help you figure out the most affordable option that aligns with your vision. This can make planning much easier, as things like the ceremony, venue, dining, and staff and vendors are already included in the package, giving you less to worry about when planning your wedding. The fun doesn’t have to stop at your ceremony, either. Cruise weddings also provide other facilities and amenities to make the experience more exciting. You and your guests can enjoy relaxing in the spa, take a dip in the pool, go shopping, and explore other onboard activities. You can do all that while being able to travel to new destinations, combining your nuptials and honeymoon into one trip.

Planning your dream cruise wedding

One of the first things on your planning checklist should be to check which cruise lines allow weddings. The most beneficial option would be to find a cruise line that offers wedding packages that align with your preferences and needs. Cruise lines like Princess Cruises are experienced with these romantic occasions and offer great value packages for any proposal, wedding ceremony, and vow renewal vision to be realized, from intimate gatherings to grand celebrations. These wedding packages include a range of essential services and offerings for a traditional ceremony, such as a captain-led ceremony, decorations, photography, a wedding cake and toast, and other perks like live music, premium dining, and bridal hair and makeup. Different cruise lines, like Carnival Cruise Line , also offer their own packages with varying benefits for newlyweds.

Not all cruises offer the same wedding benefits or even allow them, even popular names in the business. Though a newcomer to the scene and gaining much popularity and acclaim, cruise line Explora Journeys doesn’t permit weddings as their onboard officers aren’t legally allowed to officiate. The same reason goes for Viking Cruises, which is famous for destination-focused offerings. You may have certain cruise lines you want to try, but it helps to prioritize booking a cruise that allows weddings, can accommodate your guests whether they’ll sail with you or not, and will help you with any logistical or legal requirements.

Things to keep in mind

Cruise weddings can be exciting, but there are considerations to mull over before booking. Legality is a significant factor, and it can be a challenge to work out how to have a legally binding wedding or how to get a marriage license. These can differ depending on your cruise line, where they’re registered, and where you’re getting married. It can also depend on whether your wedding is in port or at sea. Fortunately, cruise lines will help you organize things like finding an officiant for the wedding or arranging your marriage license. Some cruises may also include legal ceremonies in their wedding packages, such as one officiated by the captain or performed by a local officiant in port. You should also research any other paperwork requirements to obtain or fill out before sailing.

Wedding packages may also be convenient, but they’re often limited in their selections and don’t offer much flexibility. There won’t be much room to negotiate about decor, flowers, the number of guests, and other wedding elements. You can customize your wedding ceremony further and enjoy additional perks with more packages that include more personalized touches, but you also have to consider your budget as they’re more expensive. But if you’re willing to let the cruise line take the reins in favor of a unique moment, you can enjoy a stress-free, romantic cruise wedding, no matter the package.

Thinking of a cruise honeymoon?

Weddings aren’t the only way to celebrate your love on a cruise. If you’re really looking to book a dream cruise line but don’t offer wedding packages or permit ceremonies, you can enjoy a cruise honeymoon and travel in style. You can focus more on the travel aspect of cruising instead of the wedding, allowing you to fully take advantage of the ship’s facilities, amenities, and activities. Explora Journeys may not offer weddings, but they can provide you with an immersive and luxurious travel experience with an in-suite welcome bottle of champagne, diverse culinary choices, and a rejuvenating spa experience. You can connect with your spouse as you travel to new horizons, with tours taking you to the Red Sea & Arabian Peninsula or the Mediterranean & Western Europe. These cruise lines can still provide a romantic getaway, even if you don’t get married on the ship. Like with any other regular honeymoon, you’ll still need to do your planning and research. 30 creative marriage proposal ideas from wedding planners

Proposing to your partner is arguably one of the most exciting, memorable, and nerve-wracking moments of your life.

It's a memory that both you and your partner will treasure forever, not to mention a story that will be told (and retold) to future generations.

That's why you'll want to make sure to plan all the important details before you pop the question.

“You're choosing for this person to be a part of your life, and you are beginning that journey with a core memory. Showing that you took the time to present the question in a meaningful way is a beautiful start,” says Alicia Mae, founder and principal planner, ILE Events based in Summit, New Jersey.

Just like every relationship is different, everyone has their own idea of the perfect proposal, and yours should reflect you and your partners' shared tastes and preferences.

“A proposal is not only one of the romantic moments of your life, but it’s a spoken agreement to spend the rest of your life with someone who complements your spirit. When you decide to ask for someone’s hand in marriage, it’s an important step to tap into the vision you have of your life — the long term vision,” Carin Hunt , a former wedding planner turned wedding business coach and host of the Celebration Pro Podcast , tells TODAY.

Above all, your proposal should be thoughtful and personal. Incorporating special memories, locations, or activities will show your partner how much you treasure your relationship.

“If the answer is yes to having this person by your side for your entire life, then popping the question must be just as intentional," Hunt says. "To ensure a ‘yes,’ create an experience or a moment that reflects the values of your combined lives. This is a moment for you both after all!”

From scavenger hunts to custom paintings, these proposal ideas will spark your creativity.

1. Plan a photo shoot

How sweet is this story from Ashley Thompson, owner of Ashley Creative Events ? “My brother-in-law proposed to my sister by telling her they were taking photos for their Christmas cards. She picked out her favorite dress, curled her hair, and had her nails done, and she felt her personal best,” the Las Vegas, Nevada-based wedding planner shares. “Halfway through the photo session, he got down on one knee to propose. The photographer was in the loop so that she could create the perfect backdrop for the moment and capture the entire thing.”

2. Commission a mural

This one is definitely swoon-worthy: “One of my previous couples hired a local graffiti artist to create a mural in downtown Las Vegas. The mural read, ‘Shannon, you are my best friend, and I love you. Everything I’ve done has led me to this moment here with you...and everything remaining, I want to do it with you. Will you marry me?’” shares Thompson. “As they walked down the street to go to dinner, they stopped in front of the mural, and Ryan got down on one knee. Ryan had left paint on the side so Shannon could check the box that said ‘Yes!’”

3. Croon a custom love song

Hunt calls this idea the perfect way to propose marriage without feeling too show-y. “Custom songs are the new trending gift! Why not turn the love song into a marriage proposal?” suggests Hunt, noting that you can create a private and meaningful moment when nerves have gotten to your tongue by writing a love song yourself (or hiring someone to help). “Plan a romantic movie night, order in your favorite meal, light up the room with candles, and then share your work of art.”

4. Create a crossword or puzzle

This proposal idea is perfect for the couple who never misses game night. If your partner loves working on the crossword in the mornings, create a crossword where the answers spell out “Will you marry me?” You can make the crossword as simple or as complicated as you want. For a fun joint activity, commission (or paint) a custom puzzle that spells out the big question once it’s completed.

5. Recreate your first date

Time to bring back some nostalgia. “Your first date together may have been a night out at a beautiful restaurant, or you may have grabbed hot dogs and taken in a baseball game. No matter how fancy or casual or crazy the first date may have been, you can recreate the momentous occasion for your significant other,” says Mandy Connor, owner and lead planner, Hummingbird Events and Design based in Boston, Massachusetts. “Take them back to where it all began — and spare no detail!”

6. Or recreate a meaningful memory from your relationship

“If you have a special memory that you share together, why not recreate it for your proposal?” suggests Nancy Barkley, a certified destination wedding planner and the owner and founder of Honeymoons and Get-A-Ways , based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. “Whether it’s a spot from your first date or a place from a special trip, you can come up with a creative way to recreate the memory and use it as the backdrop for your proposal.”

7. Put a riff on the traditional scavenger hunt

Many of us have heard of scavenger hunt wedding proposals, but to keep your partner on their toes, you might want to put a spin on the almost cliche solo-participant scavenger hunt day. This suggestion comes from Jacqueline Vizcaino, owner of Tinted Events Design and Planning based in Atlanta, Georgia, and author of I Was the Help. Now, I’m the Wedding Pro: The Book Every Wedding Professional Needs, but No One Wants to Write . “Perhaps pose it as a fun-loving gift from family or best friends,” says Vizcaino. Throughout the course of the day, she adds you can set up fun activities you can do together like getting a couple’s massage or playing your favorite sport.

8. Take a sunset boat ride

If you’ll be near the water or live near the water, Thompson is a fan of this simple but beautiful marriage proposal idea. “Pack a bottle of champagne and a picnic while taking a journey together,” says Thompson.

9. Write your proposal in the sky

This option can get fairly pricey, but it will definitely create a once-in-a-lifetime moment. For a spectacular proposal, you can hire a company to spell out the big question on a banner pulled behind a plane. Many companies recommend viewing the fly-by from a beach, which adds an extra touch of romance.

10. Ask with some paint strokes

Vizcaino is a fan of “saying it with paint” for an unexpected marriage proposal. “You’ll need two blank canvases and some paints for this proposal. Invite your partner to paint together, but secretly add a stencil of an engagement ring onto one of the canvases,” she says. “Once both paintings are complete, hang them up side-by-side on the wall and when your partner discovers the ring on one of the canvases, get down on one knee and ask them to marry you.” If you’re doing this at a painting studio, make sure the instructors are in on it so they can help make sure everything goes smoothly.

11. Pull off a 'plot twist' surprise proposal

For this kind of proposal, Mae says to have a significant other of your partner’s close friend ask your forever-to-be if they can be part of their proposal to their significant other. (Of course, these two will be in on the plan.) “So this entire time of planning, your partner will believe they are assisting their friend to be proposed to,” says Mae. “But on the day of the proposal, you'll actually be the one proposing instead.”

12. Throw an after party

“Have a romantic dinner and a private proposal, just the two of you. Then, surprise your partner with a party filled with all of your family and friends to cheer and celebrate the two of you,” says Thompson. This wedding proposal idea can be tacked on to whatever proposal you do, even if it’s not a dinner, FYI. “This could be as simple as inviting a handful of people over for a champagne toast, or as elaborate as renting out an event space filled with decor and florals. And a fun tip: You can add an acoustic guitarist or DJ to play some of your fiancé’s favorite love songs.”

13. Make a video

If you’re tech-savvy person, Barkley says you may want to make a short film as your marriage proposal. “You can use video-editing software or even just your phone to create a fun and creative video that you can show to your partner,” says Barkley. “You can make it a romantic montage of special memories you’ve shared together, or you can make it a funny video that’ll make them laugh. You can also add in some special effects or create a storyline with you both as the main characters.”

14. Incorporate your child or children

If you already have a child or children together, Mae recommends having the kid(s) be part of the proposal. “They can be holding the signs or wearing t-shirts that ask your partner to marry you,” she suggests. Whatever you do, make sure any youngsters you ask to get involved know how important it is to keep the wedding proposal a secret.

15. Propose at their dream venue

“If your partner has been dreaming of walking down the aisle for some time, it’s likely they have a dream venue in mind. If you’re unsure, you can always ask their besties if they are in the know,” suggest Hunt, adding that once you know the location, you can surprise your partner with a marriage proposal that ends right where you’ll say your vows in the months to come. “Even if it’s not the venue you end up choosing for the big day, your partner will swoon over the attention to detail you put into the proposal.”

16. Head to their favorite place

If you’re going to marry them, chances are you know their favorite place in the world. (Or not! But now is the time to ask your questions.) “Everyone has their favorite place they like to visit, whether it’s a coffee shop or an attraction like Disney World,” says Mae. “You can either surprise them by popping into the coffee shop during the usual time they visit the location, or plan to visit the location with them and have your proposal ready once you arrive.”

17. Write a love letter

Vizcaino says that this might be one of the most heartfelt ways to propose. “Start by writing a love letter expressing why you want to spend the rest of your life with your partner. Include special memories, funny moments, and how much they mean to you. Then, after signing it off with ‘Will you marry me?’ attach the ring and present it to them uniquely,” says Vizcaino. Some ideas: On the steps or inside of a beautiful library where other great love missives reside, at a museum, or at the place you first met.

18. Or a bunch of love letters …

You can also try this clever concept that Connor shares as a great supplement to any marriage proposal. “This takes some planning, but you can write them a secret letter each day, week, or month leading into the engagement telling them how you feel about them, what you are doing to plan this amazing event and what you hope your future together looks like,” says Connor. “After the engagement, give them the letters so that they can enjoy all the moments that you captured leading into the proposal. The sooner you start this project, the better, as it captures the narrative of your love story as you embark on your future together.”

19. Add some friends from the animal kingdom

Got an animal aficionado for a partner? “Whether you’re dating the cat-lady, or they have an obsession with something more exotic, there is an interactive encounter out there for your animal lover,” says Hunt, noting that some venues and outfitters even offer a unique way to combine the ring with an animal experience. “When you incorporate your partner’s interests into the moment, they will feel loved and in complete alignment with you,” says Hunt. “As a perk, animals are often known to be a symbol of comfort and can decrease stress levels and improve one’s mood.”

20. Hire a flash mob

If you really want to make your proposal something out of the ordinary, Barkley suggests surprising your partner with a flash mob. If you're unfamiliar, that's basically when a group of people assemble with no warning in a public place for a brief performance — and then disperse, which in this case will then allow you to take center stage and pop the question. “This is a great way to make your proposal extra special, and it’s sure to be something your partner will never forget,” she says. “You can even include your friends and family in the flash mob to make it more meaningful.”

21. Head to the arcade

If you’re video game buffs, an arcade could be a great location — or you can even play your favorite games at home. “Play your favorite games from childhood, such as Mario Kart, Pac-Man, or any nostalgic game that the two of you enjoy. Whoever wins gets the offer of a lifetime," suggests Vizcaino. "When your partner has been declared the victor, present them with an engagement ring and ask them to level up with you into a life of marriage." P.S. Yes, you do have to let them win the game.

22. Plan an evening out on the town with several stops along the way

A proposal crawl, of sorts. “Take your partner out for a romantic evening and create an unforgettable proposal experience. Start the night with a nice dinner, then stroll through the park or the city’s most iconic landmarks,” says Vizcaino. By stopping at multiple places in one evening — say, an ice cream store you both love, a path overlooking the water at sunset, a restaurant where you had your first date, a beautiful bridge, etc. — you’ll build up excitement along the way.

23. Book a surprise vacation

“Plan a surprise getaway for a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. Whisk them away to whatever location they’ve been dreaming about — if only just for the weekend,” adds Connor. “Book the travel and surprise them with a packed suitcase ready for a weekend of adventure and celebration! And even better, don’t tell them where you are headed until you arrive.”

Connor shares that one of her current grooms planned a surprise trip to Greece for his marriage proposal — a trip the bride had been dreaming about for years. “He planned a gorgeous and surprising trip complete with a beach proposal and surprise photographer to capture the moment it all happened,” Connor says. “I’ve never seen a bride so happy in all of my years of being a wedding planner.”

24. Create a visually stunning environment at home or a venue of your choice

A gorgeous hotel rooftop, anyone? Thompson recommends hiring an event planner and/or a florist, and let them work their magic to create a gorgeous space in which you can have your wedding proposal. “Add some candles to the design to give it that romantic glow that will set the tone,” adds Thompson. You might also want to include a few framed photographs of you and your better half wherever you’re getting down on one knee.

25. Infuse some laughs into the moment

“If you and your partner have a great sense of humor, you can get a little silly with your proposal,” says Hunt, noting that one idea is to plan a wedding proposal with a decoy ring that you “accidentally” drop into the ocean or snow. “You could pretend to get down on one knee to propose, and then tie your shoe instead. You can even do this multiple times throughout the day until the actual ask,” she suggests.

Whatever you do, Hunt stresses the importance of ensuring you’re both on the same page. “If you are the goofball of the relationship and your partner is hoping for a lavish ask, make sure to incorporate their vision when you truly ask for their hand,” she adds.

26. Plan a musical performance

If you and your partner's love story is straight out of a rom-com, then you'll want to make sure that your proposal is just as cinematic. Every memorable flick requires a solid soundtrack, and incorporating music into your proposal is guaranteed to make your sweetheart swoon.

Hire a band to play “your” song as you and your partner walk toward the spot where you plan to pop the question. Of course, it'll probably give the surprise away, but the best romantic gestures call for a sentimental score.

27. Engage your thrill-seeking side

Pun intended. “Do you and your future fiancée love a thrill? Take to the sky by taking a hot air balloon ride, or even crazier than that, go skydiving,” suggests Thompson. “Then, as you land on the ground and are filled with adrenaline, pop the question. The feeling of absolute joy and thrill will be unbeatable.”

28. Sweeten the deal with a fortune cookie

The future is looking bright for you and your fiancée. Take your partner to your favorite Chinese restaurant for a special date night, or order takeout if you lean more casual. At the end of the meal, have the waiter bring out two special fortune cookies (you can purchase custom fortune cookies online). When your partner opens their cookie, they'll be shocked to find the question they've been waiting for printed on a tiny slip of paper.

29. Pop the question on your birthday

Happy wedding proposal day to you! “If you propose to your partner on your birthday, this will throw them off completely. They will be so consumed with celebrating you that they will not expect you to pop the question to them ,” says Alicia Mae, founder and principal planner, ILE Events based in Summit, New Jersey.  “It’s also a win-win as your partner will already set the mood with the location and will be well-dressed.”

30. Plan a picnic

Sometimes the simplest proposal ideas are the sweetest. Pack a picnic with all your partner's favorite foods and head to a picturesque spot in your favorite park. Unlike at a restaurant, you'll have all the time — and privacy — in the world. Don't forget to pack a bottle of champagne to celebrate the big moment afterward.

What to Write in a Christian Wedding Card

Short messages, religious quotes, versatile sayings.

First of all, you'll want to make sure the couple will appreciate Christian wedding card wishes. If you're unsure about their religious beliefs, it's best to keep your wedding card more general.

If you know the couple is Christian, you can start by referencing some Bible verses about marriage for inspiration for your Christian wedding blessings and wishes. There are many verses that offer wisdom and guidance for marriage that any couple can appreciate, from romantic psalms to practical marriage advice. You can also consider other religious quotes, such as quotes from famous Christian authors, Irish blessings or religious poems.

Also, if you're married, think back to any sentiments or messages your friends and family shared with you when you said "I do." Or, if you're not married, consider Bible verses or Christian advice you've learned when making large life transitions or changes. Do any stand out to you as great pieces of wisdom? Could any apply to marriage? Pass on that generous wisdom to the happy couple in your Christian wedding card sayings to the couple, whether it's your cousin , grandchild or any other friend or family member.

You can never go wrong with keeping it short and sweet. Especially if you're adding Christian things to write in a wedding card to a card that already has a nice message inside. These faith-filled, loving sentiments will help the happy couple feel celebrated and excited for their new lives together with just a few words.

  • We are sending you lots of prayers and love for a special wedding day and a happy marriage.
  • May God bless you on your wedding day and for many years to come.
  • Love conquers all and we are so excited to celebrate your love as you say "I do" in the presence of God. Congratulations on your wedding!
  • May each day of your marriage be a celebration of your love for each other and your love for God.
  • I pray your lives together are filled with many blessings, love and happiness, and that God will guide you through any challenges you may face.
  • As you move into your new lives as a married couple, know that God is with you every step of the way.
  • I see God's love reflected in the love you share for each other.

Some phrases and Bible verses are often-quoted for a reason. Many quotes offer heartfelt wishes for the couple, useful wisdom for newlyweds and the promise of your prayers and support. When words fail, lean on one of these classic Christian sentiments for a wedding card.

  • "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres." — 1 Corinthians 13:4-8
  • "May joy and peace surround you both, contentment latch your door and happiness be with you now, and God bless you evermore." — Irish Blessing
  • "Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins." — 1 Peter 4:8
  • "May you have love that never ends, lots of money and lots of friends. Health be yours, whatever you do, and may God send many blessings to you!" — Irish Blessing
  • "There are three things that matter most: faith, hope, and love, and the greatest of these is love." — 1 Corinthians 13:13
  • "May your mornings bring joy and your evenings bring peace, and may your troubles grow few as your blessings increase." — Irish Prayer

If you're unsure how comfortable the couple will feel with a Christian wedding wish, but still want to show your support for the couple, consider one of these more versatile wedding wishes. You can let your faith guide your wedding wish, while still toning down some of the religious elements to ensure everyone feels comfortable.

  • Love is the greatest blessing and we wish you years of joy and happiness in your marriage.
  • You are a beautiful couple and will be a blessing to each other.
  • May this day mark the start of a life filled with love and contentment.
  • You both deserve the very best and have found it in each other—congratulations on your marriage!
  • We hope your marriage is blessed from day one!
  • I wish you a lifetime of love, joy and happiness.
  • Seeing the love you share for each other fills me with so much happiness. I hope it only continues to grow!
