I distinctly remember the moment I first laid my eyes on an Away suitcase . One of my coworkers had been talking nonstop about her new carry-on, and before heading out of town one day, she rolled the hard-shell spinner into the office. Like a proud new homeowner, she took our team on a tour through its features, leaving me mesmerized by its built-in compression straps and portable battery pack, as well as its stylish and sturdy design.

Though awestruck, I didn't immediately purchase my own; I was never one to invest in baggage—and the introductory price—$225 when it first hit the market—was beyond what I thought luggage was worth at the time. Following an ill-fated journey to Australia , in which I found my checked bag split open on the baggage carousel, the zipper having burst after I overstuffed it, I knew it was time to upgrade.

My first Away bag was The Bigger Carry-On , and despite having previously thought of luggage as glorified boxes to transport my travel essentials, I was immediately obsessed. For an overpacker, I was surprised how much I could stuff into the suitcase. Constantly slipping in “just one more” thing in, the zipper always held tight and the shell showed no signs of bulging. While on the go, the light glide of the wheels could tackle any surface, even cobblestone streets. Plus, the sleek, minimalist design just jived with me.

Being the space hog I am, I later upgraded to The Bigger Carry-On Flex , which added an extra 2.25 inches of expansion, meaning even I was able to go on a two-week trip with just a carry-on . As much as I’ve banged it around and overstuffed it, it’s remained impervious to my abuse.

These days, I often see other brands trying to mimic Away's features—a sign of just how much it’s changed the luggage industry. What makes it all the more surprising is that Away is still a relatively new company, having roared onto the market in 2015, with one simple goal: understanding travelers.

“From the beginning, we set out to expand the conversation around travel, solving real world travel pain points by keeping an incredibly close pulse on our customer’s needs,” Away’s chief marketing officer Carla Dunham says. “We dissected and developed a solution to all of the common headaches of travel while revolutionizing what it meant to be a travel brand.”

Founded by two female former Warby Parker executives, including Jen Rubio, who still serves as the CEO, Away was sparked by her own broken baggage disaster, noticing there was a hole in the market for luggage that was fun and functional.

After talking to hundreds of travelers, the initial carry-on was designed to meet all the most common needs—a lighter and stronger hard-side with an impact-resistant polycarbonate shell that moved easily with premium 360-degree wheels, with thoughtful features like a snap-in mesh laundry bag to keep clean to separate clean and dirty laundry, and a removable battery pack to eliminate the fight for the airport outlets.

The result wasn’t just success—the brand quickly entered the zeitgeist. Stars from Margot Robbie to Mandy Moore were spotted toting them , and Meghan Markle is believed to have given 17 Away bags as party favors at her baby shower. They've turned up on screen, too. Dunham says her favorite pop culture moment was when Portia tossed her Away away in The White Lotus. “It seemed so natural that she had an Away suitcase and that spoke to the brand’s unique position in culture and continued relevance.”

Since launch, the price points for the standard editions—which now start at $315 for The Carry-On and go up to $475 for the newly introduced The Trunk —have gone up, and are a notch above what casual or new travelers may be used to paying, but are still fairly reasonably priced for the suitcases' quality.

The brand has ventured into other travel accessories since launch, too, with both hits ( packing cubes ) and misses (travel pillows, now discontinued)—and added an outdoor collection, F.A.R., last year . It continues to evolve based on the needs of the moment. With the growing number of power outlets available on flights and around airport terminals these days, Away just phased out its distinctive built-in battery charger from its core product last month, as part of its first major refresh of its original classics line .

“Each update is incredibly intentional—from the improved features like a redesigned zipper shape, additional interior organization, and an updated trolley system, to the fresh color palette and new gloss finish, underscores how we obsess over every detail to make the journey smoother for our customers,” Dunham says.

As the brand continues to evolve, more updates and new products are sure to come, but some of the products remain staples. Here, we round up the Condé Nast Traveler team’s most-used Away bags and accessories.

Weight: 7.9 lbs. Dimensions: 23" x 15" x 10" Capacity: 47.9L

A recent convert from a larger suitcase that often had to be checked, editorial assistant Jessica Chapel says the refreshed Bigger Carry-On suitcase “does wonders,” especially since she can fit almost as much in this more compact hardside spinner, which she recently took on a five-day trip with plenty of room to spare. She’s already traveled with the 7.9-pound bag by plane, bus, and car, and put it to the test when delays allowed her only 15 minutes to get between gates. She swiftly pulled the bag out of the overhead compartment thanks to “the perfect mix of convenient handle placements and the texture of the luggage,” put the bag on top of her head—an unconventional carrying method, to be sure—and sailed through the crowd. “It's the little things, including the unique placement of the luggage's underside handle—with a small dash of adrenaline—that certainly does the trick for easy access without any shuffle, which is exactly what's needed in an airport rush,” Chapel says. (She made her connecting flight in the knick of time.)

Also notable, she says: the interior lining, mesh, and drawstring laundry for dirty clothes (no longer snapped, as part of the refresh), are made of recycled polyester. Deputy global editorial director Jesse Ashlock concurs, having depended on the classic version for more than three years now, calling it a “solid workhorse polycarbonate bag that suits a lot of different trip styles.” I recently tried the updated version of The Bigger Carry-On, and was able to pack enough for a weeklong California getaway; I am especially loving the additional inner pockets to keep my essentials more organized.

During a two-week car trip to Rhode Island and Martha’s Vineyard, destinations editorial assistant Charlie Hobbs brought along the “perfectly light” 10.4-pound medium check-in sized hardside, able to fit enough in to not have to do laundry the entire getaway. The interior of the upgraded version—which he found “unassuming”—includes more storage pockets: The compression flap, which used to have just one large zipper mesh compartment, is now divided into two zippered sections on one side with an added large pocket on the backside. Additionally, the zipper closure for the top half of the suitcase now has a zippered pocket on it. He also noticed what’s perhaps the most commonly called-out downfall of Away’s hardsides: “Despite only ever being in the car, this bag is already quite scuffed up,” he said. (When I was in Estonia with two other travel writers last month, looking at our three Away bags, we commented the same thing.) Each suitcase does come with Away's own version of a Magic Eraser that helps remove light scuffs, though a bit of elbow grease might be needed to get them out. That said, Hobbs found the 360-degree wheels rolled “perfectly well” and appreciated the new ergonomic curved zippers. Like Chapel, he found the luggage easy to lift up in a bind, when he had to put it on the roof of a Toyota for a ferry ride, noting it was easy to sling it up, “thanks to the side handles.”

“The joy of this luggage is its simplicity,” global director of audience development Lara Kramer says. At 8.15 pounds, this model has the expandable 2.25-inches of zipper space going from 39.8 liter capacity to 46.7 liters, providing “the luxury of expanding to add more room if needed,” she adds. She and her husband both use it as their carry-on suitcase—in part because it moves so well, “gliding smoothly and easily with its 360-degree spinner wheels.” Otherwise, she finds the other features “pretty straightforward,” also noting the issue of the exterior scuffing “very easily,” especially noticeable on a dark suitcase. “They're generally surface scuffs and not hard to buff out, but against the black color, it can look pretty jarring,” she adds. That said, Kramer says, “I still truly love this piece and it has continued to hold up despite many uses.”

Weight: 2.45 lbs. Dimensions: 12" x 6" x 18" Capacity: 20L

Simplicity comes first with this water-resistant nylon backpack, available in five subtle monochromatic shades, that CNT editors have called “functional” with “a classic look that you won’t tire of.” As a freelancer whose backpack is her office, that timeless look also means the backpack strikes the right balance of being professional (I’ve toted it to business meetings and events), travel-friendly (I’ve also taken it on day trips to the Jersey Shore and Long Island), and casual (it’s also doubled as my exercise bag for spin class). When I got caught in the rain at the US Open in New York, the raindrops wicked right off, and the bag's contents stayed dry. But my two favorite magic tricks of this bag are the extended clamshell-style zipper, which opens the main compartment and makes it just as easy to take something out of the bottom as the top, and the bag's weight distribution. Whether it’s the padded straps or the mesh back panel, it somehow makes the contents feel lighter—I’ve stopped at least twice to make sure my laptop was actually inside the 15-inch sleeve. Plus, the thoughtful number of pockets are great for storing little essentials.

When it comes to travel backpacks, I’m far pickier than with luggage. I need an uber-spacious main compartment and every zipper and pocket needs to be just in place—so much so that I used the same ratty old Vans Off the Wall one for well over a decade. While I recently tested out a new Tumi backpack, I never liked the placements of its pockets. Enter the F.A.R. Backpack 26L. The main compartment is deep and wide open, yet still has a slip pocket in the back for my laptop. Hidden behind it is another zippered compartment that fits a 15-inch device. The front pocket is surprisingly roomy too, with tons of organizational pockets—plus, there are two water bottle side pockets, each able to hold a 32-ounce container. Add to that the fact the entire bag is only 1.74 pounds and it still fits under the seat in front of me on planes.

While the Everywhere Zip may be sufficient for day trips, personally, I do need the space of the 26-liter bag to fit my basic travel essentials for anything that includes an overnight stay. Plus the shell is tougher for more rugged travels, whether it's outdoor adventures or multi-stop itineraries, where it may be subject to more use. That said, I am still learning to trust mine completely. On two occasions, the zipper has opened on its own and I didn't realize until contents spilled out. But both times were when I was leaving hotels in a rush, so it's possible I didn't properly zip it.

Before I tried Away’s packing cubes, I was a skeptic of the travel accessory as a whole. Other cubes I had seen were either bulky, or felt rough, cheap, and pointless. Admittedly, when I first saw this innocuous set from Away, I was still doubtful. But as it turns out, this set of four nylon water-resistant zip bags with one mesh side are as subtle as they are useful. In the smallest one, I’m able to stuff in all my “just in case” accessories—a foldable running cap, beanie, scarf, gloves, and swimsuit, and tuck it into a teeny corner of the suitcase. The medium slim is perfect for organizing my underwear, packing them vertically, Marie Kondo–style , while the medium wide fits my bras, tanks, and socks. The final one, the large slim, rotates between storing pairs of shoes or other bulky items. They all fit together like Legos in my suitcase, weighing a combined 0.7 pounds—well worth it for keeping me organized on the go.

When I first got this bag, I didn’t think I’d ever use it. It wasn’t quite a dry sack, it wasn’t quite a travel pouch. It was an in-between hybrid that I saw no practical use for. But then one day when I was running out the door, holding too many chargers in my hands, I tossed them in there—and it’s become my go-to tech accessories bag, traveling with me both on trips and in my everyday life. Made of water-resistant recycled ripstop nylon, it repels accidental spills (mostly coffee, in my case), but is so thin and sturdy that it doesn’t take up much space. The recycled nylon handle also makes it easy to grab when I’m trying to fish it out of my bag. Use it for chargers and cords, toiletries, or any other odds and ends, and know that there are small and large versions if you want a full set.

Review: Away Carry-On

In the crowded Las Vegas airport on my way home from CES 2018 , I wedged myself into an empty spot of wall next to an outlet. The outlet didn’t work. For a half-hour, I watched people wander up hopefully, charging block in hand, try it, and shuffle away, defeated. “It doesn’t work,” I said. “Sorry, it doesn’t work,” I’d say again. Over and over and over.

One man snapped: “This is the worst airport! It’s worse than JFK!” I'd argue that one dead outlet does not a terrible airport make (I'd say it was the innumerable clanging, flashing slot machines, instead), but I understood his frustration. When even your boarding pass is on your phone, a dead battery can ruin your day. Not even the most tech-savvy are immune.

In that regard, battery-toting smart suitcases can serve a very useful purpose. But this week, American, Delta, and Alaska Airlines began banning them from being checked, citing fire concerns from the lithium-ion battery. United and Southwest may soon follow suit . These five airlines handle more than 80% of the air traffic in the United States.

If you don’t have a smart suitcase with a removable battery, and the overhead compartments are full, that's quite a problem. A spokesperson for American Airlines has said that they’re not going to remove other bags to let yours in the cabin, nor will they knowingly allow lithium-ion batteries to go into the cargo hold. Overall, this is good news—if a fire starts in the cargo hold, a the cabin crew's options for fighting it are limited.

If you still think that owning a smart suitcase is worth it, the Away is a great option. I tested it on a week-long trip in the desert, surrounded by gadgets, thousands of gadget nerds, and coffee. First, it’s stylish, especially in the subdued blue of my tester. That’s not surprising, considering that the company was founded by Warby Parker alums.

The hard polycarbonate shell wiped clean and didn’t show any scuffs on the matte surface after a week of being chucked into trunks, kicked around a hotel room floor, and being checked and tossed onto a baggage carousel (battery removed, of course). The telescoping handle has three different height levels with two locking heights, which accommodated both this 5’2” tester and a 6’4” one. The four 360-degree Hinomoto spinner wheels rolled beautifully.

At seven pounds, it may not be as light as some other pieces of luggage. For example, Rimowa’s hardshell is approximately 4.2 pounds. But seven pounds is still pretty light, especially considering the Away’s enticing price point. The top and side handles lie flush to the bag’s surface and are a little tight. Still, I appreciated their presence when hoisting the bag into the overhead of Southwest’s Boeing 737-700. The TSA-approved lock is easy to reprogram.

About that battery: It has two USB outputs and one micro USB input. It reached full power remarkably fast—a little over two hours to fully charge a 10,000-mAh battery. Away claims that the battery can restore full battery life to an iPhone five times over before it has to be recharged. I didn’t end up allowing my phone to venture that close to the brink of death, but it took about a half-hour to restore 20- to 30-percent battery life on my phone when I needed it.

The bag’s simple interior is divided into left and right webbed zip compartments. Shoes fit into a webbed panel that you can cinch down over the right side of the bag, while items that you can’t compress fit on the left. It also includes a convenient nylon dirty laundry bag. The 38-liter capacity had more than ample storage for a week’s worth of toiletries and clothes.

The bag isn’t expandable, so if your clothes have a tendency to expand mid-trip, you might be better served with one of Away’s bigger carry-ons. Several people also expressed concern that the wobbly-seeming handle might break, and the small zipper seemed like another possible point of failure. To counter these worries, Away offers a 100-day trial and a lifetime guarantee on all parts. Instead of a proprietary app to display battery life or the suitcase location via Bluetooth, I just stuck a Tile in the zippered shoe compartment.

When all is said and done, it can't be denied—no one really needs a smart suitcase. You can carry several battery banks in your laptop bag and put a Tile in your plain, dumb carry-on.

But, if you are in the market for a stylish, simple, durable, and reasonably-priced new carry-on—smart or not—it’s hard to find a better option than the Away. If you’d pay over $200 for any piece of travel luggage, why not buy one that has the capacity to save your tuchus when you need it the most? Even tech connoisseurs— especially tech connoisseurs—can find themselves desperately cruising the halls of the Worst Airport in the World, hoping to charge their phone just enough to access Apple Wallet, get their boarding pass, and make their flight. Sorry, McCarran. You really need to fix that outlet.

You can literally walk around with a suitcase that looks like it’s made of gold, rose gold, or other precious metals. I like the sound of that.

All its features are the same as the Chalet collection, the only difference is the aluminum shell . Be prepared to shell out a little more for this shell though, since The Large in aluminum costs $629 . And while it’s a little pricey… it’s also super pretty.

If you’re shocked that world-class tennis pro Serena Williams designed an Away collection, so was I. Go Serena!—though since she travels a ton, it kind of makes sense.

This midsize soft suitcase is great for staying organized on short trips. With solid red on the outside, her favorite patterns are featured in the interior lining of the bag, the luggage tag, and the Away luggage monogram. I’m a huge fan—of Serena and her rad design.

The Medium Soft Case is made with durable and water-resistant nylon , so it’s much more flexible than the polycarbonate case. With an easy-access front pocket, you can access your items on the go. Heading to rainy old England? Pack a rain shell and umbrella to pull out on the fly.

Keep calm and carry-on. That’s my general rule for traveling. I get totally overwhelmed in busy airports, but to avoid the massive baggage check lines and short-tempered agents, I go straight to security with my carry-on bag and pre-downloaded boarding pass.

The Weekender

Packing for short trips taught me something: I have a ton of essentials. Though it may be a spritz here and a scribble there, on a day-to-day basis, I use a lot of stuff.

When I can, I choose to travel with a backpack. Allowing for hands-free carrying, I’ll admit that any backpacks I’ve used without compartments often leave me digging for the things I need—as well as more than one missing passport scare.

A well-organized, accessible backpack offers a lot to your trip or workday. For this part of my Away luggage review, I analyzed the spacious interior of the backpack, which features a cushioned pocket with a water-resistant zipper to fit a 15” laptop.

The clever design also includes a passport pocket on the back of the pack and a collapsible water bottle pocket on the side of the bag. Two things that definitely would have come in handy for me a few years ago.

The Backpack has three compartments with strategic uses. Here, I’ll break them down for you:

• Front side-access zipper pocket for large, flat items like books

• Large main compartment with space for clothes, shoes, and other bulky objects

I really appreciate that Away takes customer needs into account while designing. Addressing common problems and eliminating them, its suitcases and bags are equipped with smart and consistent features.

Away Luggage Review: Hype or Worth It?

Away luggage is trendy, durable, and functional. It checks all the boxes, but there are better, more affordable options out there.

Away Luggage was the most disruptive luggage brand on the market when they first launched in 2016. They were offering beautifully designed, high-quality, durable suitcases that came with one of the best warranties offered by any luggage brand out there.

They gained immense popularity through their strong social media presence, with a myriad of influencers and celebrities promoting the brand on social media platforms.

But has Away Luggage maintained their brand positioning and quality over the years?

In this Away Luggage review, I put their most recent products to the test to determine whether they’re still worthy of the hype.

Away was the original aesthetic luggage that revolutionized suitcase travel as we know it. However, many brands have copied that initial success and even outdone them. Away still makes quality bags, but they’re overpriced for what they are.

Away Luggage First Impressions

I first learned about Away in my Instagram feed years ago. Their marketing has always been undeniably great! They are notoriously known as the suitcase brand that took over Instagram. The internet is littered with photos of stylish folks wheeling a sleek Away Carry-On bag on the way to some dream vacation.

I was drawn to their products even before I knew much about the brand. They do a great job of communicating their vision of thoughtful travel and the way their suitcases can help you live out that vision. They seemed so amazing on the screen, and I was excited to check one out in real life.

When I finally got one of their cases (the Away Carry-On), the first thing that stood out to me was how good it looked in person. The styling is very modern and the colors look great. The one detractor was that I don’t love the texture on the hardshell: it’s a bit rough (almost pebbly) and just seems a bit cheap and overdone to me. I believe the reason for it is to hide scratches, but I still don’t like how it feels and looks up close. They probably could have gotten away with something a bit more subtle that also looks better.

Beyond looks, it feels fairly well-made, but it doesn’t quite stand up to some other suitcases I’ve tried. The polycarbonate shell seems strong enough, but I could get it to flex quite a bit by pushing on the sides. The telescopic handle feels sturdy (way better than the cheap rattley ones I’ve used) but it’s nothing out of the ordinary. The wheels rolled smooth and quiet around my kitchen, but they do feel a bit light and plasticky. I’m sure they’ll hold up well on smooth concrete, but rougher surfaces might be a different story. I was pretty satisfied with the wheels on my lightweight Away Carry-On bag, but I’d worry about their strength with a fully-loaded checked bag.

Lastly, when I opened up my Away Carry-On, the amount of organization features made me smile. I’d been using a cheaper suitcase for a while that had one mesh pocket and a few flimsy straps to hold things in place. The Away Carry-On (like all Away cases) was loaded with dividers, pockets, and a beefy compression system that works awesome at keeping everything neat. There’s even an included laundry bag to keep your dirty clothes separate!

Away Luggage Pros and Cons

Away luggage has a lot going for it. It’s beautiful, durable, and packed with features. Away was one of the first startup direct-to-customer brands that aimed to sell luxury-level polycarbonate suitcases at more affordable price than brands like RIMOWA .

At the same time, however, Away might not be for everyone. More brands have stepped into the scene and are offering very similar hardside suitcases at even better prices. I like my Away Carry-On bag, but I think there are better options out there.

The truth is, while Away luggage is stylish, functional, and durable, other luggage companies like Monos and July have stepped in to offer better products at a similar or cheaper price point.

Who is Away Luggage?

The company was founded in New York City by two women, Jen Rubio and Steph Korey—formerly executives at Warby Parker. In fact, Away is one of the highest-funded female-backed startups to date.

After Rubio had a suitcase fail catastrophically in a Swiss airport, she started searching for more reliable luggage. When she couldn’t find anything that met her expectations, Rubio teamed up with Korey to develop a hard-shell suitcase that is both beautiful and durable: Luggage for the modern traveler.

Away’s approach to luggage design is influenced by their real-world experiences as travelers. They aim to understand the needs of modern travelers and create products that cater to these needs. Away carry-on luggage and checked luggage

Away Luggage Review

Polycarbonate is a thermoplastic that is highly resistant to impact and scratches. It is a lightweight material that is also flexible, which means it can absorb the shock of bumps and knocks during travel.

Polycarbonate suitcases are lightweight and highly durable, making them ideal for frequent travelers who want a reliable suitcase that is easy to carry. That’s why polycarbonate is the material of choice for hardside luggage these days. My standard Carry-On is polycarbonate, and I definitely think it’s the best material to choose.

Aluminum is a lightweight metal that is highly resistant to damage and wear. It is heavier than polycarbonate, but it provides a level of protection that is unmatched by other materials.

Away’s aluminum shell suitcases are heavier and very expensive, but they provide more protection and a more premium appearance. I don’t recommend buying an aluminum suitcase unless you really must have the most luxurious and sophisticated suitcase for your travels. Aluminum’s added weight also makes it less than ideal for carry-on luggage.

Away finishes of their material choices with an ultra-soft stain-resistant internal lining fabric, high-quality YKK zippers, and genuine leather trim, including a black leather luggage tag. These little details really round out the overall high-end look and feel.

Away bags are known for their stylish and modern appearance. The brand has become a popular choice for anyone who wants luggage that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

There are nine standard colors to choose from—navy, petal, and asphalt are my favorite. With all the options it’s pretty easy to find a color that matches your personal style. I loved having options when I picked out my Away Carry-On bag. Plus, you can pick a unique color that makes it easier to find your suitcase at the baggage claim.

The brand’s signature suitcases have a hard-shell exterior, with a minimalist design and a smooth, ribbed finish that gives them a sophisticated look.

I do think there are other brands that have a more minimal, dialed-in aesthetic, though. In my opinion, Monos checked and carry-on luggage looks less cluttered and clunky and has a more sleek appearance overall than my Away Carry-On.

Organization

The suitcases are designed with a variety of internal compartments and pockets, which you can use to keep everything organized and accessible.

The interior of the suitcase features a zippered compartment, which you can use to store smaller items such as toiletries, socks, and underwear.

There is a mesh panel on the interior of the suitcase to separate items and prevent them from shifting during travel.

I really would like to see more pockets on the inside, though, especially in the Away Carry-On. There’s enough here to help you stay a bit more organized, but it’s still pretty minimal. Pockets, please!

Away luggage also includes compression straps. This is great for maximizing space in your suitcase. Nothing fancy, but it works.

In addition to the interior compartments and compression straps, some Away carry-on bags (like the Carry-On with Pocket ) also have an exterior pocket, which you can use to store items that need to be easily accessible, such as passports, boarding passes, or electronics.

In my opinion, one of the most important points to cover in a luggage review is durability. A suitcase can be sleek, stylish, and feature-packed, but if it falls apart after a few trips, it isn’t worth buying.

In the past few years, Away luggage has built a reputation for its durability and high-quality construction, in addition to its design.

My experience with the Away carry-on luggage, specifically their original Away Carry-On , exceeded my expectations. After over a year of use, my Away Carry-On bag still looks good overall. I’ve definitely put some scratches and dents in my Away bag though from stuffing it into the overhead bin and dragging it off the baggage carousel. This is pretty normal wear, but it’s good to know that Away carry-on bags aren’t bomb-proof.

The brand’s signature hard-shell checked and carry-on suitcases are made from high-quality polycarbonate and are designed to withstand the wear and tear of travel. It is lightweight yet strong. Away also created a custom scratch-resistant texture on their shells, which can help the suitcase maintain its appearance even after frequent use.

The smooth-rolling 360-degree spinner wheels are designed to stand up to impacts and long-term use. However, my Away bag is definitely not my first pick if I’ll be traveling over cobblestone streets in Europe. The wheels just feel a bit too light and cheap for use on really rough surfaces.

Every Away bag does come with a pretty solid limited lifetime warranty, which is a testament to their confidence in the durability and longevity of their products. It’s nice to know that if your suitcase shows up at the baggage claim damaged, Away will cover repairs.

If you’re shopping for new luggage, price is going to be an important factor in your decision. You want to make sure you get a suitcase that delivers the best bang for your buck.

Away was specifically started to offer the same quality and features you see in luxury-level luggage, just at a more attainable price. Companies like RIMOWA and Briggs & Riley have been offering polycarbonate suitcases since the early 2000’s, but you have to pay an arm and leg for them. Away luggage uses the same material, same manufacturing methods, and similar features, but their luggage is half the cost.

Until recently, I’d say that Away was the best option for a high-value modern suitcase, but now other brands have stepped into the market.

Monos is another brand that started a few years later than Away and makes a very similar product. Everything between these two brands is very comparable (Monos even has some advantages in organization and quality testing), but Monos is significantly cheaper. For example, the Monos Carry-On Pro (which has an external pocket) is less expensive than the more basic Away Carry-On.

So, does Away offer good value? Yes, but it isn’t the best anymore.

Away Luggage Dimensions & Specifications

Away’s core collection is available in 5 different sizes. This includes The Daily Carry-On , The Carry-On , The Bigger Carry-On , The Medium , and The Large .

Several of the models are also available in a “flex” size. For example, you can purchase The Away Carry-On Flex. This means that the suitcase can be expanded using an exterior zipper to accommodate more items when needed. This is a great feature that adds a lot of versatility if you need bigger carry-on luggage for some trips but not others. I often wish I had gotten the Away Carry-On Flex rather than my standard Away Carry-On luggage.

I love that Away offers multiple sizes for their carry-on suitcases. One thing to be aware of with the Away Bigger Carry-On is that this larger carry-on luggage is oversized for international size restrictions and may not fit in the overhead bin on some global flights. This is only a good carry-on option for domestic flights in the US.

The Away Daily Carry-On is probably one of my favorite Away suitcase offerings. It is one of the only hardside personal-item-sized rolling suitcases on the market, and it packs in a ton of great features. Designed to fit in overhead bins or under the seat in front of you, this little case is perfect for short, minimal trips or just keeping your essentials handy.

Away Luggage Features

When doing a luggage review, I want to find elements that enhance the use of the luggage. These could be unique storage or packing systems, different handles, and straps, or any creative solutions the manufacturer adds to the product.

Smooth-Rolling Wheels

If you’re coming from more basic luggage brands, you’ll immediately notice the difference with the Away suitcase wheels. They feel very premium compared to the flimsy plastic wheels you’ll find on cheaper luggage and deliver a smooth ride. However, if you’ve tried other high-end suitcases, you may be a bit disappointed. These wheels just aren’t as quiet and smooth as some competitors, and they don’t feel nearly as sturdy.

Will they do the job? Absolutely. However, I’d be a bit hesitant taking my Away Carry-On bag anywhere with really rough surfaces like cobblestone or brick streets.

Compression System

Away’s interior compression system allows you to pack more efficiently and with less effort. It consists of a folding divider with a set of straps that can be tightened to compress the contents of the suitcase.

By compressing your clothes and other items, this system holds them securely in place and helps create more space in your suitcase, allowing you to pack more efficiently. This was especially helpful when I was packing bulky items like sweaters or jackets, which tend to take up a lot of room.

I found the Away compression straps in my carry-on bag very easy to use. I simply packed my items in the suitcase as I normally would, then covered them with the interior divider and used the straps to compress the contents.

It’s really nothing extraordinary, but it works.

Removable Laundry Bag

The laundry bag is basically a removable pouch that attaches to the interior of the suitcase. It’s made from a water-resistant material to prevent any moisture or odor from spreading to other items in your luggage. It’s perfect for holding any dirty or damp clothes, such as bathing suits or workout clothes.

Built-In Battery

The built-in removable battery pack is probably my favorite feature of the Away Carry-On bags. The battery pack is built directly into the Away Carry-On and can be accessed through a convenient external USB port.

With this feature, you can easily charge your phone, tablet, or other electronic devices while on the go. It has enough capacity to fully charge a phone several times. I can’t tell you how much more convenient this is than hunting for an open outlet in the airport. I love being able to plug in my phone no matter where I am.

It’s worth noting that this feature is available only on the Away Carry-On luggage and the Bigger Carry-On luggage models.

The removable battery pack is designed to comply with all major airline policies and is TSA-approved for carry-on use. You can take it with you on your travels without any concerns about security or restrictions.

In the case that you decide to check your Away carry-on, the battery pack can be removed. The system is very easy—it comes out by simply clicking the eject button.

Exterior Pocket

This carry-on suitcase includes an exterior zippered compartment to provide additional storage space for anyone who needs quick access to essential items during their journey. The pocket is located on the front of the suitcase and is secured with a durable zipper. I’m a huge fan of external pockets on carry-on luggage, so this is a big win in my book. Unfortunately, you do have to pay quite a bit more for it over the standard carry-on.

There is a padded sleeve for a laptop or tablet, which can hold a device up to 15 inches in size. This pocket is lined with a soft, protective material that helps to keep your device safe and secure during transit. Be aware that the external pocket doesn’t have a protective hard shell, so you’ll want to take just a bit more care when stuffing your carry-on into tight overhead bins.

In addition to the laptop sleeve, the Away Carry-On With Pocket also has a range of smaller compartments for storing items like phones, chargers, passports, boarding passes, and other travel essentials.

If you’re interested in adding more functionality and style to your travel gear, Away has an assortment of accessories that can help you optimize your travel experience. Here are the top accessories to complement any Away suitcase:

Packing Cubes

One of their most popular accessories are the Away packing cubes , which come in sets of four or six, and are designed to fit perfectly inside their carry-on and checked suitcases.

The sets include cubes of different sizes. This is important since you’ll want different options for your pants vs. your socks.

They are designed with a mesh panel on top, making it easy to identify the contents inside without having to unpack or open everything. This is great for when you’re in a hurry or don’t want to disrupt the rest of your packed items.

The biggest advantage of the packing cubes is their compatibility with Away’s carry-on and checked suitcases. The cubes are designed to fill an Away suitcase and work with their compression straps, so you can really maximize your packing space. They can also be stored flat when not in use, which is a great space-saving feature.

Although packing cubes are not necessary for everyone, they definitely make the packing process more convenient and less stressful for me.

If you’re like me, packing shoes can be a bit of a challenge when traveling. That’s why I was excited to try out the Away Shoe Cubes .

Like the packing cubes and garment bag, the shoe cubes are also made from water-resistant synthetic fabric.

One of the features I appreciate about the shoe cubes is the collapsible divider, which allows you to store and separate multiple pairs of shoes. This makes it easy to keep your shoes organized, clean, and easy to access when you need them. The handle is also a nice touch, making it easy to carry or hang the cubes when needed.

I’ve just used a plastic bag for years, and this is a huge upgrade overall!

Both brands’ suitcases are remarkably similar in the features they offer. Both have interior organization systems with folding dividers and compression straps, well-engineered spinner wheels, an integrated TSA-approved combination lock, sturdy aluminum handles, and a limited lifetime warranty. Both use high-quality materials such as polycarbonate for the hardshell exterior of their suitcases, but Monos also uses aircraft-grade aluminum reinforcement for added strength.

All in all, I think you’ll be much better off with a suitcase from Monos than an Away bag. Monos puts their suitcases through some ridiculous durability testing , and the difference really shows in the quality. If you want a suitcase that will last forever, Monos is a better choice than Away’s carry-on suitcases.

I’m a Travel Editor, and I Haven’t Checked a Bag in 4 Years Thanks to This Spacious, Internet-famous Carry-on

True story: I haven’t checked a bag in four years. As a travel editor and frequent flier, I’ve had a lot of practice packing lightly and efficiently into carry-ons — no waiting around baggage claim if I can help it! — and I’ve finally got my trips down to a science. My secret is, well, not really a big secret: the Away Bigger Carry-on . 

You’ve probably seen this suitcase that Travel + Leisure editors named the “ Best Hardside Carry-on Luggage of 2023 ” all over the Internet (and rolling smoothly around airports all over the world), but I’m here to tell you that it’s 100 percent worth the hype. For trips less than two weeks, I won’t travel with anything else.

What makes this bag so special? Well, for starters it’s just about the biggest possible dimension most airlines allow in the overhead bin on airplanes, at 22.7 inches by 14.7 inches by 9.6 inches. I’ve found it to be a perfect fit on a majority of planes (and if not, once I get it on, the flight attendant checks it for free), which means I know I’m getting the most packing space possible, 47.9 liters to be exact. (That’s 20 percent more capacity than the brand’s smaller version, the Carry-on .) 

Paired with the Longitude Tote, I’ve wheeled the green Bigger Carry-on all over the world: to Greece for two weeks, to Scandinavia for a two-country luxury trip, to Florida for beach trips, to Egypt for a week when I covered myself head-to-toe in linen  — heck, it’s even taken me across Switzerland in the winter . On a multi-city itinerary. Think of the bulky sweaters and fancy après-ski looks!

The true secret of this bag is its interior compression system. On one side, there are two adjustable buckle straps you can tighten to flatten your packed clothes in a bit, and on the other a zippered mesh enclosure that compacts your clothes down. The divider compresses even more, and there’s also a convenient zipper pocket for storing smaller items like a travel jewelry case, belts, toiletries, etc. 

Away claims it can hold six to nine outfits, and in my experience that’s accurate. Full disclosure: I almost never pack more than two pairs of shoes in a suitcase, and I prefer to stick mostly to basics that can be matched with other items of clothing and dressed up or down with accessories like a belt or jewelry. Even so, on a recent trip to Charleston, I fit eight outfits, including two dresses, two pairs of shoes, a jumpsuit, jeans, a rain jacket, Patagonia puffer jacket, work out clothes, plus a bathing suit I never travel without in addition to my Lululemon belt bag . So, confirmed that it’s pretty much a magical bottomless carry-on.

Somehow, though, the Bigger Carry-on still has a little give. I’ve stuffed this bag to the brim, and the zipper has never once broken (even in Montréal when I’ve had to sit on it to get it closed — yes, editors do that sometimes too, okay?) 

But roominess is not the only thing I love about this carry-on. I also appreciate that its outer polycarbonate shell is durable enough to withstand any adventure. I’ve seen a scratch and smudge or two on mine in the past four years I’ve had it, but I’m convinced it’s indestructible. 

Why else do I love this bag? Let me count the ways. First, it glides easily in any direction with its 360-degree spinner wheels. Second, it has a TSA-approved combination lock to keep all my belongings safe and secure. Third, it comes with a water-resistant laundry bag. Fourth, it is undeniably sleek in design and colors (there are seven available). By the way, the pink Petal color is even on rare sale right now.

It’s no wonder this bag has a nearly perfect five-star rating at Away out of 3,300 reviews. One reviewer said the Bigger Carry-on is worth the investment, saying the bag “does everything you would expect at this price point” (and I can attest that with this longevity, it deserves to pass the cost-effectiveness battle you’re having in your head). 

Another traveler who brought it on a 10-day trip to Europe called the Bigger Carry-on “perfect” and said it held “five dresses, [a] ball skirt, six pairs of shoes, spare jeans, multiple tees, pool and loungewear, plus all the foundational garments I needed.”

Even better? Away has improved upon the Bigger Carry-on over the years since I got mine back in 2019. Away vs Travelpro (2022): Which Expandable Softside Luggage Should You Get?

Many travelers still prefer classic soft-shell suitcases for their flexibility. Away’s signature silhouette makes its softside luggage look more stylish

You can tell from afar if one is carrying an Away suitcase because of its signature ridged-look. The modern, sleek design of their hardside luggage has appealed to many. Staying consistent with their aesthetic when it came to their softside suitcase worked well. Meanwhile, longtime industry player Travelpro’s Maxlite 5 carry-on looks conservative and conventional.

Apart from its expandability and flexibility, many travelers prefer the soft-shell luggage because of its front pockets, something that typical hard-shell suitcases do not have. The Expandable Carry-On by Away has a big pocket on the front with dividers inside that can snugly fit an average-sized laptop. Travelpro’s front pocket is a bit smaller, but can still fit smaller items such as tablets and passports.

Travelpro is incredibly lighter than Away and has a larger capacity

True to its name, the Maxlite 5 carry-on is impressively light. At 23″ x 14.5″ x 9″, the Travelpro only weighs 5.4 lbs. Away’s dimensions are a little smaller, but it weighs 9.28 lbs. When expanded, the Travelpro has a capacity of up to 46 L compared to Away’s 42 L. As the Travelpro is a lot lighter, you can pack more and maximize your airline’s weight limit. Even when full, both the Travelpro and Away can still be lifted pretty easily to stow in the overhead bins.

The Travelpro Maxlite 5 is made of lightweight polyester fabric with DuraGuard coating that makes it water repellent and water-resistant. On the other hand, The Expandable Carry-On by Away is made of water-resistant nylon. You have to note that although polyester is lighter, nylon is more durable and more scratch and tear-resistant than polyester. This is also why nylon suitcases have a higher price tag than polyester ones and most top of the line softside luggage is made of nylon material. If you are a loyal Travelpro user though, their Platinum Elite Expandable Carry-On is made of nylon (but also costs more than the Away).

Away’s compression system helps, but Travelpro’s carry-on can pack more

The interior of the Travelpro Maxlite 5 has a full-length lid pocket on its left where you can store footwear. On its right compartment are the side accessory pocket and adjustable hold-down straps to keep your items secure. The Travelpro is also equipped with H20 Guard to protect the interior lining from moisture. This is helpful because its exterior material is only water repellent, but not water-resistant unlike Away’s.

Away Travel’s Expandable Carry-On luggage has a deeper full-length pocket on its left compartment. On its right compartment is the hidden laundry bag, adjustable straps, and a compression pad. Although it has a smaller capacity than the Travelpro, the Away can still pack a couple of outfits that will be good for four to nine days, thanks to its compression system.

Both suitcases do not tip over even when expanded so you can squeeze in what you need in your carry-on without problems. The Away luggage can be expanded for up to 1.75 inches while the Travelpro up to two inches. As mentioned before, Travelpro has a larger capacity so this model can fit in a couple more clothing items if you are traveling a little longer.

Away has TSA-approved locks and dual four-spinner wheels

Additional differences between the Away Travel and the Travelpro expandable carry-ons include their wheels and TSA locks. As mentioned earlier, The Expandable Carry-On is more expensive than the Travelpro Maxlite 5 and these details justify why.

They both feature spinner wheels, but the dual four-spinner wheels of the Away provide better support and control. That is not to say that Travelpro’s wheels are ineffective. They still do the job fine and offer good maneuverability, but Away’s dual four-wheel spinners glide more smoothly.

Another difference is the Travelpro Maxlite 5 expandable carry-on is also lacking the TSA lock. If you need to check it in or leave it at your hotel, you have to buy a separate lock to secure your belongings.

The search for 18 fair and impartial jurors will begin next week in former President Donald Trump's first criminal trial.

Trump faces a 34-count felony indictment alleging that he falsified New York business records in order to conceal damaging information to influence the 2016 presidential election. Monday kicks off jury selection for the trial that is expected to last about six weeks — even as Trump campaigns to be president once again. Trump has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

In total, 42 questions will be used to select 12 jurors and six alternates for the first-ever criminal trial featuring a former or sitting president. And this will be Trump's first appearance in a trial since winning enough delegates to receive the GOP nomination.

Still, jurors will not be asked for whom they have voted or will vote, nor will lawyers question them about their political affiliations or campaign contributions. New York Judge Juan Merchan, who is overseeing the trial, believes those views will be made clear through other questions.

Jurors will be asked to identify the online media, news and social media programs they use, podcasts they listen to and if they have ever considered themselves a supporter or a member of any of six white supremacist and extremist groups — including the QAnon movement, Proud Boys and Antifa.

They will also be asked about their business and political relationships with the former president and New York business mogul. Lawyers will ask if prospective jurors, a relative or a close friend ever worked for any company or organization that is owned or run by Trump or anyone in his family. And they will be asked if they have ever attended a rally or campaign event for Trump, volunteered for his campaign or been a part of any "anti-Trump" efforts.

These have all been questions similarly asked in Trump's previous jury trials in Manhattan.

Trump's first criminal trial is set to start Monday in New York City. You’d think an abundantly confident macho man like Trump would be chomping at the bit to get into a courtroom with his lawyers and prove the “ Thugs and Radical Left Monsters ” wrong, to pull back the curtain on this unjust persecution/prosecution, to shove the evidence of his angelic innocence right in their smug faces.

You’d think. But Trump has been doing the opposite, trying everything possible to delay the trial. His lawyers filed three futile appeals just this week , all of which were shot down.

He’s grousing that he can’t get a fair trial in Manhattan, that the judge slapped him with an unconstitutional gag order and that the judge has a conflict of interest because his daughter is a Democratic political consultant.

At this rate I expect he’ll show up to court Monday in a WHAAAAAAAAmbulance then get carried in on a stretcher, moaning about how the deep state gave him typhoid fever.

These are not the actions of a bold, confident man who knows he’s innocent and will fight to prove the naysayers wrong. 

That’s probably because Trump is not a bold, confident man who knows he’s innocent, and he doesn’t know how to “fight.” He just slings mud and runs away hollering: “I have never slung any mud! That is FAKE NEWS!”

Republicans hate themselves: Nobody hates the GOP as much as Republicans hate the GOP. Just ask Marjorie Taylor Greene.

As with every self-assigned description of Trump – a “great” president, a “brilliant” businessman, a “tough” guy – it’s all a mirage. It’s ineptitude, lunkheadedness and cowardice cloaked by flimsy branding.

Trump as a fighter? LOL! The man never fights, he just runs away.

When he lost the 2020 presidential election, his narcissism wouldn’t allow him to accept the results. So it became Vice President Mike Pence’s fault. It became a “rigged election.” And did Trump himself march into the halls of Congress to stop the transfer of power, bravely buoyed by facts he believed were in his favor?

Nope. He dispatched the most gullible of his supporters, let them mob the U.S. Capitol and let them get locked up. If he loses again in November, he’ll do the same thing – talk a good fight, then send in the rubes.

When the trial starts Monday, Trump will finally face accountability

On Monday, barring a legal miracle, the man who thinks so highly of himself that he autographs Bibles will step into a courtroom and become the first former U.S. president to face a jury of his peers in a criminal trial .

He is terrified of that moment. The narcissism at his core has never met accountability.  If he had a lick of confidence, he wouldn’t be paying attorneys – probably with GOP donor money , not his own – to pull every whack-a-doodle legal trick they can muster to delay, delay, delay.

He wouldn’t be spending hours online and at rallies griping and whining and woe-is-me-ing.

He’d be ready, self-assured and eager to clear his name. He’d be tough.

Trump is a chicken. A frightened, clucking chicken who, as of Monday, will have no room left to run.

O.J. Simpson, NFL star whose murder trial gripped the nation, dies of cancer at 76

O.J. Simpson , the former NFL star who was acquitted of murdering his ex-wife and her friend in a televised trial that gripped the nation, has died of cancer, according to his family.

"He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren," the family said in a statement posted on X . "During this time of transition, his family asks that you please respect their wishes for privacy and grace."

Reports circulated in February that Simpson had been diagnosed with prostate cancer and was in hospice care as he underwent chemotherapy. He denied that he was in hospice in a video posted on X, but did not address whether he'd been diagnosed with cancer.

“Hospice? Hospice? You talking ‘bout hospice?” he said in the video with a laugh, adding that he doesn’t know who started the rumors. 

Orenthal James Simpson played 11 seasons in the National Football League and was known as "The Juice" to his fans, but his sports legacy was tarnished forever in the 1990s after his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman were killed.

Brown Simpson, 35, and Goldman, 25, were found stabbed to death outside her Los Angeles home in 1994.

On June 13, 1994, Goldman was returning sunglasses that the mother of Brown Simpson had left at a restaurant where he worked. The two were stabbed and slashed dozens of times, and their bodies were found the next day.

When Los Angeles police officers went to Simpson's home to speak to him about the slayings, Simpson did not answer the door but officers noticed a trail of blood leading to his car, as well as blood on his car.

Once a revered athlete, Simpson went from a Hall of Fame icon to a murder suspect.

Days later, officials charged Simpson with the murders and he attempted to evade arrest, resulting in an infamous hourslong police chase along Southern California's highways in his white Ford Bronco .

Simpson's case went to trial in 1995 and was broadcast to millions of viewers across the nation. The court case was dubbed the "trial of the century" as it dragged on for months and transformed into a public spectacle.

Feelings over the trial have remained mixed over the years, with many accusing the Los Angeles Police Department of racism in its handling of the case. Others believe that Simpson's ability to retain high-powered attorneys allowed him to get away with murder.

The trial made prosecutors Christopher Darden and Marcia Clark household names, in addition to Simpson's defense attorneys Johnnie Cochran, Alan Dershowitz and Robert Kardashian.

He was acquitted of both murders in a controversial verdict. Two years later, he was found civilly liable for wrongful death in the double homicide case.

Despite his acquittal in the criminal trial, many still believed Simpson was guilty, a belief bolstered by a jury ordering him to pay $33 million to Goldman's family in the civil case — damages that were never paid in full.

Goldman's father, Fred Goldman, spoke to NBC News by phone Thursday and described Simpson's death as "no great loss."

“The only thing I have to say is it’s just further reminder of Ron being gone all these years," he said. "It’s no great loss to the world. It’s a further reminder of Ron’s being gone.”

Bob Costas, the sports broadcaster who worked with Simpson for years at NBC Sports covering the NFL, said Simpson leaves behind “a complicated legacy, to put it mildly.”

“I can’t think of anyone historical or someone that we may have known where the first chapter and the second chapter of their lives are such a stark contrast … revered and then reviled,” Costas said on NBC’s “TODAY” show Friday.

In 2007, Simpson led an armed robbery attempt of a sports memorabilia dealer in Las Vegas. He argued in court that he was recovering his own stolen items, but his defense failed to sway the jury.

He was convicted and sentenced to 33 years in prison, of which he served only nine before he was released on parole .

Simpson spoke to The Associated Press by phone in 2019 , telling them that he was healthy and happy living in Las Vegas. He maintained that he believed his robbery conviction was unfair, but said: “I believe in the legal system and I honored it. I served my time.”

The Simpson murder trial was re-enacted and relitigated decades later in FX’s “The People v. O.J. Simpson,” an installment of the network’s popular “American Crime Story” series in 2016. Released that same year was the Academy Award-winning documentary "O.J.: Made in America," detailing Simpson's rise and fall.

Simpson was born in San Francisco and raised in public housing, going to a local community college before transferring to the University of Southern California. He was part of the school's national championship in 1967 and earned the Heisman Trophy the next year.

He was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in 1969 as a No. 1 overall pick.

According to NBC Sports , Simpson was the first player in the league to rush for 2,000 or more yards in a season and is considered the best running back of his era.

Simpson had three children from his first marriage to Marguerite Whitley, one of whom died in a drowning accident as a toddler.

He also shared two children with Brown Simpson.

Following her murder and his acquittal, Simpson won custody of their shared children and moved to Miami with them. His custody fight with his former-in-laws also drew headlines as the children's grandparents took him to court in a bitter legal battle.
