Lucy was really great to work with. All the guides were wonderful and informative. The private transportation was absolutely worth the upgrade and we were happy with the excursions. The location of the hotel in Saigon (adora art hotel) was not the greatest as there was not a lot we could walk to. San premium hotel in Hanoi was fantastic as is was close to the old quarter and the train street. Hermes luxury cruise in Halong bay was truly 5 star and well worth the upgrade. Everything went very smooth. The only thing in Ho Chi Minh was the waiting at the airport for 5 hours. We finished the ChuChi tunnels tour and arrived at the airport 5 hours prior to our flight. I feel like we could have left the hotel a little later. Other than that, our private tour in Vietnam was amazing.

How to get from Ho Chi Minh to Halong bay

Halong Bay as a world natural heritage recognized by UNESCO is one of the famous tourist attractions in Vietnam. With thousands of magnificent islands, miraculous fruits of creation, Halong Bay is always the ideal destination for you to discover the special part of nature. With the advantage of beautiful scenery, comfortable atmosphere, delicious seafood, this bay attracts thousands both domestic and foreign travelers annually. If you are planning your Vietnam tours from South to North, let’s find out how to get from Ho Chi Minh to Halong Bay.

Halong Bay

Even though there are many ways for you to get Halong Bay from Ho Chi Minh City , you can have two main options.

Take Ho Chi Minh to Halong bay flights

This is the fastest way to get to Halong bay. In this route, you will have to take a flight to Van Don Airport then take the bus or taxi to Halong bay.

Opened for the first time on 25th December 2018, Van Don airport is one of the most modern and beautiful airports in Vietnam.

The Vietnam domestic flights to/from Van Don – Quang Ninh airport currently are made by Vietnam Airlines , VietJet Air and Bamboo Airways.

Vietnam Airlines offers the best average price from US$25/way, Vietjet Air from US$30/way and Bamboo Airways from US$35/way. This price excludes taxes and fees.

With different airline supplier, you will have different time and day to get to Van Don. More specifically, to Vietjet Air , the flight schedule will be on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays with the departure time at 07:00. After about 2 hours and 15 minutes, you arrive Van Don at 09:15.

Van Don airport

Another supplier is Vietnam Airlines that offer you more option as it offers flight every day at 14:00 from Ho Chi Minh city. Your arriving time will be 16:05 accordingly.

The same as Vietnam Airlines, Bamboo Airways offers flight every day but at a different time of departure that is 08:50.

From Van Don, you have to take bus Number 14A or 14B for free from Van Don to Halong bay with the schedule of 80-90 minutes/trip and the frequency of 28 trips/day. The bus departs after the arrival time of the aircraft 30-60 minutes. You can book the bus by visiting the website phucxuyen.com.vn or registering at air ticket agents of Vietnam Airlines or VietJet Air for better support.

free bus from Van Don airport to Halong Bay

Another option to go to Halong bay is ordering a taxi or airport shuttle with the price of about US$7/person.

Flight from Ho Chi Minh to Hai Phong or Hanoi and take the bus to Halong Bay

If it is inconvenient for you as not many options to get Halong Bay directly by flight, or you would like to enjoy the beauty of many different destinations in Vietnam, this second option is for you.

In this journey, you will take a flight to Haiphong at Cat Bi airport or to Hanoi at Noi Bai airport, then take the bus to Halong bay.

For the first way, there are suppliers in this route including Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet Air, Jetstar Pacific with more than 11 flights every day. After 2 hours of flight, you arrive Cat Bi Airport where you take the bus to get to Halong Bay. At the price of about US$6/person, it takes you 1.5 hours of traveling from Haiphong to Halong Bay. With this trip, you can not only experience the majestic of nature in Vietnam but also visit one of the busiest harbor city in Vietnam – Haiphong.

Besides, there are more than 20 flights at a different schedule from Ho Chi Minh city to Noi Bai Airport , from early morning till evening. With about 2 hours and 5 minutes, you arrive Hanoi – the capital of Vietnam. Then it takes you about 1.5 hours only to Halong Bay from Hanoi by shuttle bus or private car thanks to Halong – Haiphong Expressway and Bach Dang Bridge  operating in Sep 2018.

Bach Dang Bridge

Best time to visit Halong Bay

Choosing the time to travel to Halong is also very important that can affect your trip.

During May to July being the summer in Northern Vietnam, there are many domestic tourists choose Ha Long as the destination to relax in the beach. If you travel to Halong Bay in June and July, there are often typhoons pouring into the North of Vietnam. The landscape on the bay, accordingly, will be gloomy. It might even be banned from allowing cruise ships to take tourists to the bay and stay overnight on the bay.

Therefore, if you want a peaceful atmosphere to enjoy the beauty of Halong Bay, you can book Halong boat tour in the autumn from September to November. Halong Bay in this season is very beautiful with the sun, clear sky and blue water. You do not need to worry about the overload of visitors these days. Furthermore, thanks to the fewer storms at this time, you are free to discover Halong Bay as much as you want.

Overview of halong international cruise port.

Officially launched in November 2018, Halong international cruise port is the very first cruise port in Vietnam allowing the world's largest and most modern yachts to come to Halong Bay. The cruise port stands out with a modern design blended with classic European architectural features. It recreates the poetic rustic villages by the sea and impresses tourists with its state-of-the-art facilities.

halong bay cruise from ho chi minh city

Invested and constructed by Sun Group - one of the most reputable multi-industry corporations in Vietnam, Halong port includes a variety of constructions such as bridges, international and domestic wharves, a passenger terminal, and functional houses of authority and management boards. The port is formally known as Bai Chay tourist wharf and later changed to Halong international cruise port.

The port covers an area of 13,500m2. There are 6 berths divided into inland wharf and international wharf. The inland wharf includes 4 berths that can welcome up to 300 domestic yachts and cruise ships. There are plenty of local junk boats, overnight cruises, speed boats.

International wharf includes 1 pier with 2 berths which can accommodate 02 mega ships (tonnage up to 225,000GT) at the same time. Celebrity Millennium was the very first international cruise to anchor at Halong international cruise port with more than 2,000 passengers and around 1,000 crew members. Besides, other world-class cruises docking here are Voyager of the Sea, World Dream, Westerdam, etc.

Additionally, a 4500m2 terminal designed by the world's leading architect Bill Bensley is a perfect stopover where tourists can relax and admire the striking Vietnamese architecture from the outside and the European-style space of the shipyard in the late 19 century from the inside. The terminal includes a lounge system, duty-free stores, mini marts, souvenirs, and food & drink services, and more.

The port has an ideal location on the new Beach Road of Bai Chay ward, Halong city, Quang Ninh province. It is around 180 km from Noi Bai international airport (Hanoi), 54 km from Van Don airport (Quang Ninh), and 45 km from Cat Bi international airport (Hai Phong). The property is conveniently located, making it easily accessible to all the city's prominent hubs. Besides, Bai Chay is the most bustling center in the city where travelers can find a series of highrise resorts, hotels, and restaurants.

How to get there

To get to the port from Hanoi, you can use public transport such as local bus, taxi, seaplane, or cruise bus or private transport such as motorbike or car.

  • From Ho Chi Minh City

Those coming from Ho Chi Minh City can get to Halong international cruise port by plane, train, or local bus.

  • By plane: There are a bunch of carriers and time frames if you choose the airway. The ticket price ranges from US$60 to US$100 per way. Cat Bi international airport is the nearest airport which is over 1 hour from the Halong Cruise Port. Van Don is the newest and second nearest airport yet the schedule is more limited and the airfare is a bit higher. Meanwhile, Noi Bai airport provides a variety of flights with affordable prices yet it is the farthest airport among 3. However, if you intend to spend some time in Hanoi, it is highly recommended.
  • By train: This is the most time-consuming way yet travelers who want to have a local experience and see the scenery change from region to region can try. All trains are equipped with both soft seats and 4 and 6-bed cabins to make the trip more comfortable. It takes around 33 hours from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi and costs around US$30 to US$70 per person per way. From Hanoi, you may choose one of the above means of transport to get to Halong.
  • By local bus: Instead of changing vehicles in Hanoi before going to Halong like traveling by railway, you can choose a local sleeping bus directly from Ho Chi Minh City to Halong Cruise Port. It costs around US$30 - US$45/ticket and takes around 35 hours. However, a sleeping bus is not as comfortable for a long trip since a cabin and a restroom are unavailable and travelers need to stop a few times on the way.
  • Restaurants

Situated in the heart of Halong City, the cruise port is close to a lot of restaurants serving local and international cuisine. As seafood is the specialty of Halong, a great diversity of seafood can be seen on the menu of every restaurant such as “sa sung”, lobster, crab, oyster, sea urchin, squid, abalone, sea cucumber, etc. However, rest assured that you can still order non-seafood dishes and other Vietnamese delicacies in these restaurants.

From Ninh Binh, you can book a taxi/private car, a limousine bus or a local coach to get to the port. It takes you around 3 - 4 hours to transfer by car. A private car arranged by a tour operator or by your hotel in Ninh Binh is highly recommended since you will know the schedule clearly in advance and be sure of the time. For a local coach or limousine bus, it might be a bit unsafe due to the language barrier.

4. Does the port provide a pick up service?

There are a lot of cruise organizers or travel agencies that provide transfer service from Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Hai Phong, or other locations. For other information about shared cruises, private cruises, sightseeing tickets, you can check details in the counters 4, 5, 6 in the terminal.

5. What time does the port open?

The opening time of Halong International cruise port is from 6:30 to 18:30 daily.

Visiting sites in the tour

Sung Sot Cave (Amazing cave)

Sung Sot Cave is located on Bo Hon Island, Halong Bay. This is a beautiful, spacious cave that leaves visitors “amazed” upon their visit.

The cave is divided into two distinct chambers with a length of 500m and a total area of up to 10,000 m2. Inside the cave are stalactites and stalagmites of unique and fanciful shapes, a natural wonder within the mountain. To visit Hang Sung Sot, you will have to climb nearly 200 stone steps and enter inside. The visit takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour.

Titop Island

Titop Island is an island named after a Soviet astronaut by President Ho Chi Minh, whom he met during a visit. The island has a small crescent-shaped beach and a path leading up to the mountain peak to admire the panoramic view of Halong Bay. The time for visiting Titop Island is about 45 min –  1 hour on this tour.

Luon Cave (Kayaking/Bamboo boat)

Hang Luon is a narrow “wet” cave located on the water’s surface, allowing small boats to pass through. Hang Luon is near Sung Sot Cave, in the Bo Hon Island area. The cave’s archway is about 60m long, and you can kayak or take a bamboo boat to enter a spacious area inside like a water lake surrounded by rocky mountains.

Fighting Cocks Islet

Fighting Cocks Islet is an iconic landmark of Halong Bay, appearing in the most famous photos of the bay. In reality, it is a large rock that, resembles the shape of two chickens, one hen, and one rooster. The tour will pass by Ga Choi Island and stop for you to take photos and check in with this symbol. This is only a photo stop, and you cannot climb up to visit it like other islands.

6 Transportation Options to Get from Hanoi to Halong Bay & Vice Versa

How to travel from Hanoi to Halong Bay

Rachel Tran

Most tourists combine a tour to Hanoi with a visit to Halong Bay, the UNESCO World Heritage Site, located to the east of the city. How to get from Hanoi to Halong Bay ? What are the best ways to travel to Halong Bay? In this article, we’ll look into 6 ways to commute between the two destinations, and advise you on the best for your trip.

I. Distance from Hanoi to Halong Bay

Distance from Hanoi to Halong bay

How far is Halong Bay from Hanoi?

Halong Bay is located on Vietnam’s coastline, just over 160 kilometers to the east of Hanoi . Hosted by Quang Ninh province, Halong Bay boasts a picturesque scenery of emerald water, endless sky and tranquil atmosphere. Thousands of impressive limestone karsts and islets here contributed to the UNESCO World Heritage title.

There are mainly 06 ways to travel from Hanoi to Halong Bay, each of which has its own pros and cons. We’ll look into each and every way in the following part of the article.

II. How to Get from Hanoi to Halong Bay?

1. travel from hanoi to halong bay by local bus.

Get from Hanoi to Halong Bay by local bus

Local buses are among the easiest and cheapest options to get to Halong Bay.

Booking :

The first thing you’ll have to do is to check the closest bus station that will drop you off at Halong Bay. These five bus stations host buses from Hanoi to Quang Ninh Province:

Arriving at the bus station, you’ll find a great deal of suppliers providing transport services to Halong Bay. Come to the counter to ask for a ticket to Halong Bay and the staff will assist you.

Route : the bus will drop you off at specific stations, and you will have to get a taxi or Grab to get to your hotel or the cruise port (Tuan Chau Gate). To save money on the connecting trip, consult your hotel or cruise supplier for the closest station to get off.

Duration : a ride on the local bus will take about 3-5 hours depending on whether the bus runs around to pick up passengers.

Cost : For a ride in a typical 40-seat bus, the ticket will cost you 100,000 – 120,000 VND. You’ll spend another 50,000 – 70,000 VND to get from the station to the hotel or cruise port.

Pros and cons : a one-way ride will cost 150,000 – 200,000 VND in total, making it one of the cheapest means of transportation available. However, you’ll face a number of difficulties:

  • Language barrier at the stations
  • Time consuming
  • Inflexible departure and arrival stops

2. Travel from Hanoi to Halong Bay by shuttle bus

Travel from Hanoi to Halong Bay by shuttle bus

Shuttle buses are the smaller buses that offer better services with fewer passengers, and direct routes .

Google for the phrase “vexere” and you will find a website that hosts online booking. Lock in your departure point (Hanoi) and arrival point (Quang Ninh), and you’ll see a number of available shuttle bus suppliers. There are typically 9-seat so-called “limousines” and 19-seat minibuses and they often depart from their own Hanoi offices, rather than the public stations. The arrival points vary between buses, hence you’ll have to look it up yourself to see which is the closest to your hotel or the cruise port.

Things will be much easier if you book a tour via a cruise or tour operator. They will take all the booking off your hands with a relatively cheaper price if you book it yourself. The arrival destination will be pre-determined and you won’t have to worry about getting off at the right place.

Route : like local buses, shuttle buses will drop you off at specific stations. If you are hosted by a tour/cruise operator, they will deliver you to your hotel or the cruise port.

Duration : shuttle buses often travel with a direct route, resulting in a shorter commuting time. Thanks to the new highway connecting Hanoi and Halong Bay, a one-way trip will only take 2.5 hours minimum.

Cost : For a ride in a typical 9-seat bus, the ticket will cost you 200,000 – 300,000 VND. You’ll spend another 50,000 – 70,000 VND to get from the station to the hotel or cruise port, if you travel without a travel agency.

Pros and cons : shuttle buses are much more comfortable and time-saving, in comparison with local buses. However, communication will again be a burden if you don’t book via a tour operator.

3. Travel from Hanoi to Halong Bay by train

Travel from Hanoi to Halong Bay by train

Trains will be a slow option, but fairly cheap compared to others.

There is only one train that heads to Halong Bay everyday. It departs at Yen Vien Station (Hanoi) at 4:55 am. You can only opt for “hard” seats, which are made of wood and not very comfortable. Go to dsvn.vn and lock in your departure point (Yen Vien), arrival point (Halong) and process to buy the ticket.

Route : the train will head to Halong Station, from which you will need to get a taxi/Grab to arrive at the hotel or cruise port.

Duration : a train ride will typically take 6-7 hours.

Cost : a train ride is 90,000 – 100,000 VND on average, depending on the time in the year. Another 50,000 – 70,000 VND will be spent on a connecting ride on taxi/Grab.

Pros and cons : for those who have only one day in Halong, a 6-hour train ride will definitely be unsuitable. However, it’s one of the safest and cheapest options, if you don’t mind the noisy sounds of the train.

4. Travel from Hanoi to Halong Bay by seaplane

Travel from Hanoi to Halong Bay by seaplane

Seaplane is the only option if you want to fly to Halong Bay, as well as the fastest and most expensive way .

Google “seaplane from Hanoi to Halong Bay” and you’ll find the only supplier – Hai Au Aviation among the top results. Call them up and they will take care of you from here.

Route : There is a straight Hanoi to Halong Bay flight, but the airplane will be landing at Tuan Chau Gate.

Duration : the flight will take 45 minutes to 1 hour at the maximum.

Cost : a one-way flight will cost 4,000,000 – 10,000,000 VND, depending on the time of the year.

Pros and cons : it will surely be great to admire the majestic views of Halong Bay from above, as you fly over limestone karst mountains and islets. Seaplane is the ideal option for those seeking a luxurious, stress-free experience.

5. Travel from Hanoi to Halong Bay by motorbike

Travel from Hanoi to Halong Bay by motorbike

Motorcycling is only recommended for those having a legal driving license in Vietnam. Please don’t risk being involved in legal issues if you only visit the country for a temporary period. It is the cheapest yet most adventurous option among the six.

Motorbike renters are readily available, especially in the Old Quarter. You can easily rent a bike for 100,000 – 150,000 VND per day. Simply Google “bike rental” or consult your accommodation owners.

Route : there are a few routes for you to choose from. Google Map will assist you on the way.

Duration : depending on your riding speed, you will get to Halong Bay after roughly 3 hours.

Cost : 100,000 – 150,000 VND for a bike rental.

Pros and cons : it doesn’t seem like a good idea to travel over 160 kilometers on a motorbike. The ride will be exhausting and rather dangerous, if you are not accustomed to Vietnamese traffic. Other risks involve bad weather and getting lost. If you do travel on a motorbike, make sure you have a license, appropriate protective gears, a smartphone with working Google Maps, and a friend to help you in emergencies.

6. Travel from Hanoi to Halong Bay by private car/taxi

Travel from Hanoi to Halong Bay by private car or taxi

Private cars and taxis will ensure you and your family utmost privacy , but they are also among the most expensive options .

Google “car rental” to find an appropriate supplier, or simply pick up the phone and call a taxi.

Route : as the most tailormade option, you will be transported to your chosen destination.

Duration : it will be a 2.5 hour-ride, or 3 hours at the maximum, depending on traffic.

Cost : roughly 1,500,000 – 5,000,000 VND, depending on the choice of service.

Pros and cons : if privacy and convenience matter most to you, this is your ideal option. However, double check the price of the taxi before embarking on your journey.

Given a lot of options, it’s not easy to pick the best means of transportation from Hanoi to Halong Bay, taking account of the weather, budget and travel time. Each means of transportation will have its own pros and cons, and the final decision lies in your hand. We hope that you found this article useful for your upcoming trip to Halong Bay.

Halong Bay cruise port

Region Asia

Local Time 2024-04-11 21:23

Port Halong Bay cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Halong Bay, Vietnam, Ha Long City. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Halong Bay (aka Ha Long Bay) is a cruise port and popular travel destination located in Vietnam's Quang Ninh province, approx 110 km (70 mi) from Hanoi (the country's capital city). The region administratively belongs to Ha Long City.

Note: CruiseMapper's Halong destination combines both Halong Bay (Cai Lan) and Ha Long City (province's capital) which has population around 300,000.

Ha Long Bay is the center of a bigger area that additionally includes Cat Ba Island (to the southwest) and Bai Tu Long Bay (to the northeast). These zones share similar geological, cultural and climate characteristics. The Bay's signature features are the numerous limestone karsts, caves and cute islands of various shapes and sizes.

Halong Bay's core has an area of approx 334 km2 (129 mi2) with around 770 islets. The region's geo-diversity has developed biodiversity, including sea, shore and oceanic biosystems, as well as tropical evergreen biosystem. The Bay is also home to many faunal and floral endemic species.

Unfortunately, with the increasing tourism, many of the bay's mangroves and seagrass beds were cleared and resorts were built. Numerous jetties and wharves were constructed for mooring tour boats and docking of cruise ships. Game fishing near its coral reefs threatens many of the endangered marine species.

Halong Bay was designated a UNESCO Site in 1994. It is also among Vietnam's Renowned National Landscape Monuments, and member of the "Club of the Most Beautiful Bays of the World".

A tour ship went on fire on the night of March 6, 2016, in Halong Bay, forcing 2 guards to leave the vessel. The fire broke out in the cabin at midnight when the wooden boat was docking at Tuan Chau International Port, but the 2 crew members managed to escape. It was built in 2008 and capable of carrying 48 passengers.

In January 2017, 14 foreigners, 6 crew members and a tour guide were rescued after their cruise ship went on fire as it was returning to port after a night trip. In February 2017, an anchored cruise ship went on fire while waiting for 7 tourists, including 5 foreigners, who had just left for kayaking. Local authorities announced plans to replace all wooden boats and tour ships (that are highly flammable) with metal vessels by the year 2023. In 2016, they also considered banning cruise ships from staying overnight on waters in both Ha Long Bay and Bai Tu Long Bay for safety reasons.

In July 2018, Van Don International Airport (also serving Ha Long Bay) received its first aircraft. The new airport was officially opened on December 30 (2018) and is located approx 50 km (31 mi) from Ha Long City, approx 20 km (12 mi) from Cam Pha (city and a major coal export port) and 220 km (135 mi) from Vietnam's capital Hanoi .

  • The Van Don airport has total area 325 hectares/800 acres, one single runway (length 3,6 km, width 45 m), 7 aircraft parking stands, 1 traffic control tower (height 42 m / 138 ft) and one passenger terminal building.
  • The airport serves the planes of Vietnam Airlines and VietJet Air, with direct domestic flights to and from Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) .
  • Van Don is Vietnam's first international airport developed by a private company (Sun Group, specializing in entertainment, tourism and leisure development projects). The facility cost VND 7,463 billion (USD 310M) and was built with the assistance of Netherlands Airport Consultants. The airport has annual capacity 2,5 million passengers plus 10,000 freight tons.

Also on December 30 (2018), Sun Group unveiled 2 more infrastructure projects in Quang Ninh province - Halong International Cruise Port and Halong-Van Don Highway. The new highway (4-lane, length 60 km) will reduce travel time from the airport to Halong City to under 50 min.

By the budgeted VND 1,032 billion (USD 43 million) "Halong International Cruise Port" project will be constructed cruise terminal with modern amenities and capacity to handle international passenger ships. The new facility is located in Halong City's Bai Chay ward and can berth 2 of the world's largest cruise liners in Royal Caribbean's Oasis-class (up to GT 225,000 tons each) simultaneously. The Terminal's max capacity is 8460 tourists (passengers and crew). The new cruise terminal is designed by Bill Bensley.

In December 2019, the cruise port (via Ha Long Sun LLC) signed a 15-year management deal with Global Ports Holding Plc (2004-founded, London UK -based port operator company). The company Ha Long Sun LLC also manages the Sun World Halong Complex (2017-opened amusement park with outdoor playgrounds, rides, trains, live shows).

D1-Hanoi (1)

Welcome to Hanoi!

Welcome to Hanoi – the capital of Vietnam, often referred to as the ‘Paris of the East’, with its yellow ochre colonial buildings, tree-lined boulevards, and scenic lakes. As soon as you deplane, the designated Immigration Officer and a guide will meet you at the end of the jet bridge or the entrance of the terminal. The officer will assist you with immigration procedures to make sure that the process is as quick as possible. From the airport, you will be driven to your hotel in the city center. Enjoy the ride through the busy streets. After check-in, take the rest of the day to rest and prepare for your exciting adventure in Vietnam.

D2-Hanoi-1 (1)

Hanoi Highlights and Thang Long Citadel

After a leisurely morning you will be picked up from your hotel in the early afternoon.

Explore the charming city of Hanoi, often referred to as the ‘Paris of the East, with its yellow ochre colonial buildings, tree-lined boulevards, and scenic lakes. Start your city tour at the Thang Long Citadel. Built in the 11th century by the Ly Viet Dynasty to mark the independence of the Dai Viet and named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010, the Citadel was a political centre of the country for 13 consecutive centuries and served as the capital of Vietnam for eight centuries. Visit the secret underground war bunker which played an important role in the American War, especially during the 12 days and nights of the Ha Noi – Dien Bien Phu air battle of 1972.

Continue to the Temple of Literature, Vietnam’s first national university built in the late 11th century. The picturesque temple is an example of well-preserved traditional Vietnamese architecture and is featured on the back of the 100,000 Vietnamese Dong banknote. Drive back to central Hanoi for a walking tour through the famed Old Quarter known for its ‘36 streets of 36 wares’ named after the original 36 artisan guilds that date as far back as the 13th century.

D3-Red-River (1)

Tho Ha Village in the Red River Delta

Travel to the photogenic Red River Delta village of Tho Ha via a 45min drive from Hanoi and a short ferry across the Cau River.

Despite the increasing industrialization of the area, the village of Tho Ha has remained mostly unaffected by modern development. Walkthrough the village’s narrow terracotta-tiled alleyways, a reminder of its history as one of Vietnam’s three oldest ceramic centers. Notice the many bamboo racks filled with drying rice paper, speaking to the current occupation of many of its inhabitants after the pottery industry faded. Visit here presents an authentic portrait of a typical Vietnamese village with some of the homes dating back more than a century.

Visit the 17th century Tho Ha Pagoda with its triple gate, belfry, and forecourt carved with dragons, clouds, and flowers. Enjoy a conversation with one of the residents to gain insights into life in the village before returning to Hanoi.

D4-Hanoi-Old-Quarter (1)

Art in Hanoi and an Evening Show

This morning, we will take you on a unique tour of the modern and traditional arts of North Vietnam. Known as the cultural center of Vietnam, Hanoi is home to more than 250 art galleries. Led by an art curator, your introduction to Hanoi’s art scene begins at the Fine Arts Museum, housed in two colonial-era buildings.

Learn about the Hang Trong Art paintings – a traditional genre of Vietnamese woodcut painting, seen in the temples and shrines. It originated from the area of Hàng Trống and Hàng Nón streets in the Old Quarter, where we will drive to meet one of the very few remaining artists proficient in this type of art. With the passion and love for art painting, at the age of 66 years old, he still devotes his energy to preserve the traditional craft.

Conclude your art experience at Manzi café Art Space. Tucked in a colonial villa inside the Heart of Old Quarter, Manzi is an art place of contemporary Hanoian artists, hosting diverse exhibitions of painting, sculpture, and photography.

Return to your hotel at lunchtime and meet your guide again in the evening for a traditional dinner and a spectacular show.

The venue of The Quintessence of Tonkin is in Sai Son Village, Quoc Oai District, 20km outside of Hanoi. It is performed by nearly 200 farmers from the village. Set in the open-air large amphitheater, the show draws inspiration from the spiritual history of the nearby Thay Pagoda by telling the story of the pagoda’s founding by venerable monk Tu Dao Hanh and explains the ancient union between religion and the monarchy. The show blends different aspects of the cultural Quintessence of Tonkin: Poetry, Buddhism, Nostalgia, Music & Painting, Joy & Festivities. The 1000 years old art of water puppetry will bring you vivid images of daily rural life in Vietnam.

Right before the show, you will have a chance to try some local dishes from the outdoor food village right at the venue.

Meals (B, D)

D5-Lan-Ha-Bay (1)

Scenic Lan Ha Bay Cruise

You will transfer to the city of Halong (2 hrs drive) right after breakfast and take a speedboat from the marina to your luxurious boat.

The first highlight of the cruise is lunch, which we serve in Ginger’s nearly 360-degree light-flooded restaurant. Our live cooking in the open kitchen is a one-of-a-kind experience – enjoy the culinary display along with fantastic panoramic views of the passing scenery.

Relax on the terrace deck or your private balcony and soak in the enchanting aura which emanates from the surreal seascape.

In the afternoon, as we reach the shore of a small lagoon on Cat Ba Island, we visit a small Viet Hai village. Little has changed in Viet Hai since the ancestors of the 80 households settled here centuries ago. The community is self-sufficient, as the residents provide for themselves by cultivating vegetables and fruits in the next-door fields, growing rice in the valley, and fishing in the bay. This is a truly authentic opportunity to meet local inhabitants and experience their daily life.

Back onboard the chef invites you to an interactive cooking class. Learn about local ingredients and the preparation of classic Vietnamese dishes.

As the sun sets, we arrive at our tranquil anchor spot for the night. Kick back and let reveal in your mind’s eye today’s adventures as night falls gently over the bay. After dinner, unwind at our bar or see a movie screened at the lounge.

D5-Lan-Ha-Bay-Kayak (1)

Quiet Morning and Transfer to Saigon

Wake up early and join our Tai Chi session on the terrace deck, with the first rays of the sun touching the water. Coffee, tea, and breakfast pastries await in the dining room to start the day.

It is time for Ginger to lift her anchors and cruise to a place called “Frog Lake”, a secluded area perfect for a refreshing swim in the bay or exploration via kayak.

Back on board, we serve a hearty breakfast while cruising back to our off-shore embarkation spot, from where we transfer you back to the welcome lounge at the pier by your speed boat. Savor the last moments of this unique journey while relaxing on comfy sunbeds on the terrace deck.

We will disembark at around 11:00 AM, and return to Hanoi in the early afternoon. We’ll take you straight to the airport for your flight to Saigon.

Upon your arrival at Saigon Airport, you will be met by the driver and transferred to your hotel in the city center.

D7-Saigon-1 (1)

Saigon Highlights and Dinner with the Artist

With over eight million inhabitants and four million motorbikes, Saigon is truly a city that never sleeps. Despite its modernity, Saigon maintains a strong link to the past and our city tour takes in some of Saigon’s most historic landmarks.

Meet your guide after breakfast for a short walk or car ride to the Notre Dame Cathedral, a red brick edifice with twin spires constructed from materials imported from France (entrance is only permitted when no services are being performed). Then head across the square to the Central Post Office, completed in 1891. A short drive away is the former Presidential Palace, the headquarters of the Saigon Government during the American War. Continue to the War Remnants Museum for a vivid perspective of the American War through the eyes of the Vietnamese. (Please note that some of the displays are very graphic.) Experience Saigon’s famed street coffee culture while your guide provides a brief language lesson as well as insights into the daily life of a Saigonese before returning to your hotel at lunch time.

In the evening we’ll bring you to Salon Saigon, an important art centre of Saigon. Meet the Salon’s curator and the artist who is exhibiting their work at the gallery. Follow their steps and take in the art collection on the 1st floor of this charming colonial building before sitting down for a special cocktail (which was served to French artists in the 18th & 19th centuries) and to enjoy traditional dance performance on the ground floor. Vietnam is a diverse country with 54 different ethnic groups – each with its own rich culture and practices. Traditionally, dance has been an important feature of each group’s culture – performed in theatres and at festivals, especially after harvest time. Afterward, enjoy dinner with the Salon Saigon art curator and the local artist in the peaceful and creative setting before transferring back to your hotel.

D9-Cu-Chi (1)

Cu Chi Tunnels with a Veteran and Dinner with Traditional Family

The ingenious Cu Chi tunnel complex is an immense network of connecting underground tunnels used by the Viet Cong as hiding spots during combat. Originally dug in 1948 as a refuge from French air and ground sweeps, the tunnels also served as living quarters, communication and supply routes, housed hospitals, food and weapons caches throughout the American War. Visit the underground villages with a VC veteran who once lived there, for a better understanding of the tunnels’ history, the hardship of life in the tunnels, and the Vietnamese resilience during combat. With the help of your translator-guide, listen as the veteran recalls how he survived the living conditions of the subterranean hamlets where lack of air, food, and water made conditions almost unbearable. Return to Saigon in the afternoon.

PM: Meet your guide for a very special experience.

Pick up at your hotel and transfer to your host family located on the outskirts of the city. In Vietnam, a typical family has three or four generations living under the same roof. By joining this tour, you will be able to have a closer look into their lives.

Mrs. Hong, the host of your dinner is a hostess who owns an authentic Vietnamese restaurant in the city center. She is also a chef and a professor at cooking schools and colleges in Saigon. Enjoy traditional Vietnamese meals lovingly prepared with fresh ingredients by a welcoming host. The host will be happy to share her delicious home cook recipes with you to take home as well.

After the meal, there will be time to interact with your hosts to understand more about relationships in a Vietnamese family.

D9-My-Tho (1)

Transfer to the Mekong Delta and Sampan Donation

This morning we will transfer you to the Mekong Delta for some in-depth exploration. You will soon learn that the sampan boats are an important mode of transportation and livelihood in the Delta where the intricate network of waterways is often a cheaper, safer alternative to roads in transporting goods and conducting commerce. Yet, despite generations of effort, some families still cannot afford their sampan, which is significantly impacting their economic situation. Today you can donate a sampan to a family and significantly improve their life. Interact with the family receiving your sampan donation. Learn about their livelihood and ways of living in the Delta. Participate in a small sampan donation ceremony with local authorities and villagers as witnesses where all will share in the joy that your generosity has made possible. From here we will take you to your resort, for a relaxed afternoon by the river. Enjoy the pool and the spa or choose to visit My Tho town and observe the locals go about their lives.

D10-Embarkation-1 (1)

Embark the Ultra Luxury Boat

Your driver will bring you to the My Tho port right in time for the embarkation.

Settle into your floating retreat, with its window wall conferring an endlessly captivating panorama. Enjoy these private Mekong moments on your California king bed, terrace or daybed.

D11-Cai-Be-1 (1)

Weaving Village and Plantations

D12-Floating-Market (1)

Pagodas, Market, and Cooking Demo

Travel by skiff along Bassac Canal to Chau Doc floating market then head off by van to Long Son Pagoda atop Sam Mountain. Ask the monks about their age-old Buddhist practices. Return via the bustling morning market. Optional 18 kilometers bike ride on Long Khanh Island or take a rickshaw ride to visit Tan Chau Market with chef.

After lunch, relax by the pool, try traditional Khmer massage or learn to cook Mekong inspired dishes while we cross the border.

D13-Khmer-Village (1)

Remote Mekong Lives

On this river of time, we admire dexterous Khmer artisans dyeing and weaving kroma, the ubiquitous item no Khmer lives without. Explore the riverbank on two wheels if you wish, past Buddhist temples and thatch houses perched on spindly wooden stilts while white oxen wade just offshore.

After lunch, we board our marine-grade aluminum skiffs and head towards the tamarind trees of Preah Prosop, a remote village little changed over several lifetimes.

D14-Phnom-Penh-3 (1)

The Capital of Cambodia

We show off the Cambodian capital to our passengers by motorized tuk-tuk, the Royal Palace, Silver Pagoda and the National Museum of Cambodia, home to the world’s largest collection of Khmer art. For those who wish, we visit the Tuol Sleng Museum of Genocide and the Killing Field or shopping at Russian Market.

After you disembark, you will meet you driver who will take you to the airport or the hotel, depending on your travel arrangements.

It is in early january so i am fully aware of the weather.

As I suggest, you can view the cruise as Syrena or Oriental (3 stars), Starlight (4 stars), or Paradise Elegant (5 stars).

The weather in January is quite cool (or cold) so maybe you cannot enjoy swimming, but of course, it will not have storm.
