Dubai, also known as the City of Gold, is even home to an entire souk devoted to selling gold. The modern architecture with buildings like the Burj Al Arab and Burj Khalifa makes the Dubai skyline a noteworthy one. After lifting Covid-19 restrictions, the city is now back on many travelers’ lists with plenty to do and see. In this travel guide, Elite Traveler takes a look at the diverse range of experiences to choose from in Dubai.

When planning your trip to Dubai, consider Emirates business class flights . It’s over a 12-hour flight from New York City , so comfort is essential. You’ll have access to the standup lounge bar, plenty of food, a top-tier wine list, cocktails and entertainment, and the service is impeccable. The Burj Al Arab is easily one of the most iconic buildings in the city’s skyline, among being an architectural icon around the world. Even the most basic rooms are incredible, but the top-tier suites are something to splurge on if you want to feel like royalty. The suites have attracted some of the highest names among celebrities and royalty, with the architecture reflecting the colorful unique designs throughout the Burj Al Arab.

The spa treatments at Talise Spa in the Burj Al Arab are something that just simply cannot be missed. The massage tables overlook the view of the skyline and the gulf. Arriving at Bab Al Shams, it truly feels like a luxurious desert escape. The design consists of traditional Arab architecture, immersed in the desert with infinity pools overlooking the sand dunes and an extensive ecosystem filled with birds and gazelles, among other wildlife. The location provides an escape from the busy city life with a selection of activities for guests including desert exploration hikes, massages, horseback riding, archery, camel riding, falconry and more in between sunbathing or relaxing in your soaking tub in the bedroom.

The food is fantastic, with plenty of fresh-squeezed juices, coconut water, wraps and more. Pre-dinner cocktails at Al Sarab Rooftop Lounge are a must before heading out. If guests are lucky enough to be in Dubai during Ramadan, the hotel’s Iftar is outstanding, with a wide selection of traditional foods, live shows, music, tea, hookah and more. Since Covid-19, the shows are back and more lively than ever, and group activities are encouraged for guests.

While visiting the Burj Al Arab, stop at SAL for a bite to eat before relaxing by the infinity pool over the Arabian Gulf. SAL serves a variety of Mediterranean dishes and fresh seafood, like the King Crab and homemade trenette pasta with bright green, fragrant fresh basil pesto, plump tomato, espelette chili and tangy balsamic or the light tomato gazpacho with capsicum, cucumber and crispy bread.

Dinner at Bastion is a must while staying at the Jumeirah Beach Hotel. The steakhouse offers views of the Burj Al Arab and serves delicious cuts like kiwami wagyu and rack of lamb, among other appetizers to share like foie gras, calamari, tableside steak tartare and more. In addition to the main courses, the restaurant offers an extensive wine list and knowledgeable staff waiting to suggest pairings. Don’t forget to stop for an after-dinner cocktail at Floor 24 at the Jumeirah Beach Hotel.

Sometimes when visiting a place that already has frills like a waterfront view, the food tends to be just so-so. They don’t have to try as hard because crowds will continue to visit if the place has a good view. The Atmosphere overdid itself with this dining experience. Not only do you get incredible views being on the 122nd floor of the world’s tallest building, but there are incredible crepes, egg dishes with freshly shaved truffles, towers of fresh cheeses, meats, fruit and fresh-squeezed juices like mango and orange to choose from. Finish the meal with a golden coffee because everything in Dubai is coated in gold.

Cocktails at Nobu and Dinner at Ossiano

Nobu is a great spot within Atlantis to grab a drink before dinner and deserved a special mention in our travel guide to Dubai. It’s the perfect place to try out a new sake or a refreshing lychee martini. After drinks at Nobu, check in at Ossiano . The gourmet eatery is surrounded by tanks filled with 65,000 marine animals. Guests are dining, sipping their espresso martinis while watching the fish swim gracefully by. Throughout this experience, chef Gregoire Berger shares his passion for food, art and flavors he’s picked up through personal experiences, each dish coming with its own story.

Burj Khalifa

As far as activities go, our travel guide to Dubai would not be complete without mentioning Burj Khalifa. A staple in the skyline, the building reaches over 2716 feet and has 160 stories. It holds multiple world records including the tallest building in the world, having the highest number of stories in the world, having the highest outdoor observation deck in the world, and having the tallest service elevator in the world, among others.

Aura Skypool is the world’s tallest 360-degree infinity pool, with incredible views of the palm, the gulf, the skyline, and more. You can rent a chair and relax by the water. Take a dip while waiting for your fresh coconut water to be delivered to you in the sun. Don’t forget to order some delicious sushi or a refreshing cocktail at the onsite restaurant. Taking a hot air balloon ride over the desert during sunrise is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience and one that we simply had to include in our luxury travel guide to Dubai. The ride is so peaceful and calm, riders barely even feel any movement. With other balloons floating by in the distance, riders will get to watch the sunrise over the desert from a bird’s eye view. The company is Dubai’s longest operating hot air balloon company with seasoned, professional pilots to safely lead the tour. When the balloon lands, vintage Land Rovers will bring guests to an extensive breakfast filled with local favorites.

Camel Rides

After breakfast mentioned above, as part of the Balloon Adventures experience, guests will have the opportunity to ride a camel. The camels will take riders for a short walk around the desert, only about 3 to 5 minutes or so, in between getting food at the camp, so guests can experience what it’s like before hopping back in the colorful Land Rovers.

I took a tour of the Liwa Oasis/Sand Dunes with Imran, and was happy with the tour! Imran was knowledgeable and provided history on Dubai/UAE, as well as provided ... read more advice for sightseeing during my stay! For those that like the long drives, but enjoy the scenery, this is a highly recommended visit! The view of the dunes are impressive, and you get 360 degree views of them, it truly gives you a sense of what it must have been like for the nomadic tribes. Tour was done as according to the schedule, but I would recommend possibly adding a little bit more activities/visit of the Liwa Oasis Dunes/Mureeb Dunes, such as walking through the dunes, camel rides, riding a quad, or tea ceremony. This can also replace 1-2 of the other itinerary items. I also enjoyed visiting a local restaurant in Liwa, where we stopped to visit lunch. I thoroughly enjoyed trying some of the local cuisine, as well as interacting with the food staff and people watching. When you arrive at Dubai International Airport for your private 7-Day Dubai luxury tour, one of our tour representatives will be standing by to meet and greet you. Once you have completed immigration procedures, you will then be driven to your five star hotel in one of our deluxe air condition vehicles.

When you get to your hotel our representative will ensure that you enjoy a smooth and totally hassle-free check-in. They will also go over your tour itinerary with you and confirm pick up times for your upcoming tours. After this, you will be left to settle in and enjoy the rest of the day as you wish.

Day 2: Heritage Tour and Authentic Emirati Lunch

Enjoy an excellent breakfast at your hotel and then at the confirmed time your personal guide will meet you and your heritage tour will begin. This tour begins with a visit to the heritage area of Bastakiya. With its wind-towered buildings and its meandering pathways and narrow lanes, this is the best place to see what Dubai look like 40 years ago.

You will also visit the 225-yearold-old Fort Al Fahidi which is home to the Dubai Museum, and then you will enjoy a very scenic Abra boat ride across Dubai Creek to see the city’s famous gold and spice souks. During your tour, you will also have a brief photo stop next to the absolutely magnificent Jumeirah Mosque before heading to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Center for a traditional Emirati lunch.

After you have enjoyed your lunch you will then visit the Dubai Golden Frame, a gold-plated 150-meter-tall and 93-meter-wide observation tower. Following your visit to this iconic landmark you will then be driven back to your hotel for the 2nd night of your Dubai luxury tour. and you will have the rest of the day to enjoy as you wish.

Day 3: Modern Dubai City Tour with Burj Al Arab Gold Cappuccino

This day of your Dubai luxury tour is all about Modern Dubai. Enjoy another excellent breakfast at your hotel and then at the confirmed time your personal guide will meet you and you will make your way to Dubai Marina, an opulent city within a city. From here you will make your way across to Palm Jumeirah, the largest man-made island in the world and one which is home to numerous opulent homes and luxury hotels, including the magnificent Atlantis Hotel.

Before you leave the island, there will be a short photo stop at the Atlantis Hotel and then you will be visiting Souk Madinat Jumeirah. Next, you will visit Burj Al Arab, one of Dubai’s most iconic buildings and one which is home to one of the world’s most luxurious hotels. While you are here, you will be served a Gold Cappuccino which is sprinkled with real gold. After your tour comes to an end, you will be driven back to your hotel and you will have the remainder of the day to enjoy as you wish.

Day 4: Dune Bashing Desert Safari with Camel Ride and BBQ Dinner

Enjoy another excellent breakfast at your hotel and then enjoy the first half of the day as you wish. At 15h00 you will be met at your hotel and then you will head out into the Arabian Desert in a deluxe air conditioned 4×4 vehicle for a thrilling dune bashing desert Safari. Later in the day, you will make your way to the top of one of the tallest sand dunes to enjoy absolutely breathtaking sunset views and an opportunity to try some sand boarding.

After your exhilarating dune bashing experience, you will then make your way to a nearby Bedouin campsite where you will be able to enjoy some refreshments and a short camel ride while your hosts are preparing a delicious BBQ dinner. Enjoy your dinner under a star filled sky while at the same time enjoying a belly dancing show and a Tanoura dance performance.

After a thoroughly enjoyable time in the Arabian Desert you will then be driven back to your hotel where you will be spending this night of your Dubai luxury tour.

Day 5: Dubai Iconic Sites Tour

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel and then at the confirmed time your personal guide will meet you and take you to see some of Dubai’s most iconic attractions. Begin your day with a visit to “At the Top Sky” which is an observation deck on the 124th floor of Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building which stretches nearly 1 km into the sky.

Next, you will visit Dubai Mall which is the largest shopping mall in the world. While you are here you will also visit the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo which is home to approximately 65,000 different types of marine species. Your last stop for the day will be at the spectacular Future Museum, and then you will be driven to your hotel where you will be spending the fifth night of your Dubai luxury tour.

Day 6: Full Day Abu Dhabi Tour and Qaṣr Al-Waṭan

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel and then at the confirmed time your personal guide will meet you and then you will drive to Abu Dhabi for a full day tour. On arrival at Abu Dhabi, your first stop will be a photo stop at the breathtaking Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque which is one of the largest mosques in the world. From here you head to the Corniche, an 8 kilometer-long impeccably manicured waterfront with a spectacular beach, a collection of restaurants and cafes, and a children’s play area.

After spending some time at the Corniche, you will then visit Heritage Village, a venue which was designed to remind young Emiratis of their rich and fascinating past. From here you will head to the Abu Dhabi Marina Mall where you will have some time to do a bit of shopping if you want to. This is a great opportunity to buy some souvenirs. The mall is also a home to hundreds of luxury shops.

Next, you will visit Qaṣr Al-Waṭan which is the presidential palace of the United Arab Emirates. Finally, there will be a brief photo stop near the Emirates Palace. The Emirates Palace is not open to visitors so you will only be able to take photos of the exterior before you are driven back to your hotel where you will be spending the last night of your 7-Day Dubai luxury tour.

Day 7: Dubai Luxury Tour Ends and Final Departure

Burj Khalifa

Standing 828m high, the  Burj Khalifa  is the tallest building in the world and one of Dubai's must-visit attractions. The majestic building is located in the heart of the city and is a hub of activity day and night. Just looking up in awe at the sheer scale of this magnificent structure is memorable in itself, but it's definitely worth venturing inside too. You can capture perfect views of the city from the  observation  deck at levels 124 and 125, or have a bite to eat in the  At The Top Sky Lounge . For special occasions, treat yourself to a sunset session at The Lounge, Burj Khalifa ,  the highest lounge in the world at 585m.

The Dubai Fountain

Located at the base of Burj Khalifa  is one of the world's largest choreographed fountain displays, where powerful jet streams soar as high as 150m in the air and sway in time to musical numbers. Stop by in the evening when displays begin at sundown and take place every 30 minutes, until the final song plays at 11pm. Diners can also sit back and enjoy the show at an array of restaurants at Dubai Mall  or Souk Al Bahar , both commanding prime positions near the fountain arena.

Palm Jumeirah

Palm Jumeirah is one of the largest manmade islands in the world and a triumph of human ingenuity. Locals and tourists alike flock to its vast array of high-end hotels – Waldorf Astoria, Fairmont, One&Only, Jumeirah Zabeel Saray  and, perhaps most notably, Atlantis, The Palm . Getting here is simple, thanks to the monorail running down the 'trunk', which connects to the mainland's tram system.

Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood

Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood in Bur Dubai is one of the oldest neighbourhoods in the city. Best seen on foot, this area offers nostalgic views of a bygone era with traditional windtowers and a maze of winding alleyways, positioned along the historic waterways of Dubai Creek. Even an entire day spent here is not enough to see it all. Along with its 1,200-plus shops and 150 restaurants, the venue  is home to a range of other fun attractions.

Skydive Dubai

If there's one thing every adventure-seeker must sign up for, it's a skydiving experience. Skydive Dubai provides tandem skydive opportunities, supervised by trained professionals. You'll have to book well in advance to secure a spot, but it's worth it as you dive through the clouds from 13,000 feet and take in views  of the landmark Palm Jumeirah or rolling dunes of the desert. And you can keep reliving the epic experience thanks to perfectly-captured videos by the Skydive Dubai team. It's one for every braveheart's bucket list.

Madinat Jumeirah

Literally translated as 'City of Jumeirah', the Madinat Jumeirah complex is inspired by an ancient citadel. Housing luxury hotels and private enclaves designed to reflect traditional Arabian architecture, it's a great spot to indulge in a therapeutic day at the world-class Talise Spa , splurge on local trinkets and boutique brands at the Madinat Souk , or immerse yourself in the work of famous artists at the high-tech Theatre of Digital Art . And, with over 40 restaurants and lounges featuring cuisines from around the world, it's also an ideal place to refuel.

Dubai Frame

Since opening in 2018,  Dubai Frame  has become a cultural landmark that connects the Dubai's past with its present and represents a remarkable engineering feat.  Located within Dubai's famous Zabeel Park , this attraction lets you experience the transition between Old and New Dubai thanks to sweeping panoramic views of the city from 150m high. One of its striking features is the state-of-the-art clear glass bridge walkway, which connects parallel vertical towers so that, from the outside, the structure perfectly resembles a giant picture frame.

The aptly-named Kite Beach is the perfect place to test out your watersports skills , although there's plenty to do out of the water at this popular spot too. Grab a smoothie from one of the many open-air cafes and restaurants, watch bikers and skaters fly by at the skate park, or enjoy a game of volleyball with friends on the sand. With plenty of beach activities, plus an incredible view of Burj Al Arab  in the distance, you can easily spend a whole day here.

Dubai Water Canal

Dubai Water Canal is a 3.2-kilometre-long waterway extending from the Creek in Old Dubai  through Business Bay before finding its way to the Arabian Gulf. With 80,000sqm of public space and facilities and a 12km cycling path, the Canal has become a popular visitor attraction. There are also five pedestrian bridges that snake their way across the iconic waterway, so it's the perfect spot to stroll and take in classic views of the city at its best. Nearby is the Al Habtoor City  development, home to the thrilling  La Perle by Dragone  show, five-star hotels and an array of trendy restaurants.

If you'd like to shop, dine, watch a movie and swim in the sea all in one place, consider a trip to The Beach, opposite Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR). With guest DJs playing on most weekends, a cinema and plenty of trendy boutiques , The Beach is always buzzing with activity. Take your pick from the range of dining options, try the exhilarating watersports on offer or just enjoy some relaxation time in a cabana with your favourite book. The Beach is also connected to the trendy new  Bluewaters Island  district by a pedestrian bridge.

City Walk offers European-style pedestrian streets alongside a host of shopping and entertainment options – perfect for a pleasant day out. Take a walk along tree-lined avenues with shops and restaurants and spot artwork etched by some of the world's finest urban artists . Afterwards, treat your family to an afternoon of fun and head over to The Green Planet  to see real wildlife in an indoor tropical rainforest setting. You can also catch a concert, live sports or a comedy show at the nearby  Coca-Cola Arena , the Middle East's largest indoor arena.

Dubai Miracle Garden

A world of floral wonder awaits you at Dubai Miracle Garden, the world's largest natural flower garden. The 72,000sqm park has an impressive line-up of famous buildings and structures completely transformed into colourful flower displays. You can immerse yourself among more than 50 million blooming flowers throughout the different exhibits. The nearby Dubai Butterfly Garden  is also worth a trip. Here, children can explore over 15,000 species of butterflies whilst learning more about them in a fun setting.

Dubai Opera

Located in the Downtown district, Dubai Opera offers an enticing performing arts schedule from the likes of London’s West End and Manhattan’s Broadway. Museum of the Future

Built along the historic Dubai Creek and designed in the shape of a traditional Islamic lectern, the Mohammed Bin Rashid Library is the latest cultural hotspot to open its doors in the city. A landmark  unique to Dubai, the library is the largest in the region and representative of its collective cultural wisdom, educational milestones and continued forays in research and academia. Once an industrial area in the centre of Dubai, Alserkal Avenue now comprises around 40 warehouses, converted into galleries, dance studios, artisanal cafes and more. Since its humble beginnings as a standalone gallery in 2008, word caught on and similar concepts soon moved into the area. Building on the legacy of Expo 2020 Dubai , which welcomed 192 nations and more than 24 million visitors, is the future-centric Expo City Dubai. Explore popular country pavilions including the falcon-inspired UAE Pavilion, award-winning Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Pavilion and reworked spaces for Luxembourg, Pakistan and Australia. Alif – the Mobility Pavilion and Terra – the Sustainability Pavilion have been transformed into interactive educational experiences, while the Opportunity Pavilion is now the Expo 2020 Dubai Museum.  Al Wasl Plaza , the Dubai Exhibition Centre, the Garden in the Sky observation tower and the Surreal water feature also remain at Expo City Dubai, which has its own metro station.

The January 1 unveiling of One&Only inside the daring new One Za’abeel tower marks the brand’s first-ever urban resort, which might seem like a peculiar proposition in a city where One&Only already has two more traditional beach resorts—one at the base of the Palm Jumeirah and the other presiding over the man-made island’s outermost frond. And yet, there’s perhaps no better place in the world to test out an ambitious new concept than in a city known for its gravity-defying, luxury-defining hotels.

A few minutes south in the Business Bay district,  the Lana  (from roughly $925) is the first Middle Eastern member of the Dorchester Collection which debuted on February 1. It occupies a 30-story Foster + Partners–designed tower on the Dubai Canal. Sure, Dubai may have a bit of a reputation for assembling a pastiche of elements of global cities on the banks of the Arabian Gulf, but the Lana elegantly transports Europe to the UAE with a series of clever design choices. Here marble meets wood, bold floral patterns mingle with soft jewel-toned velvets, and every turn reveals a new mix of textures and textiles that blend together seamlessly.

In Spanish chef Martín Berasategui’s Basque restaurant Jara, a sexy pink bar swirls under orange light fixtures resembling embers hovering in the air. At the hidden-away cigar lounge Txakolina, metal curtains, purple velvets, and dark leathers come together to create a sexy speakeasy. And in the Dior Spa, neutral ecru spaces are enlivened with the label’s signature blue Toile de Jouy motif.

There are duplex suites with mirrored ceilings and tubs seemingly vast enough to fit the Burj (it certainly looks close enough to join you). The result is a surprisingly soft, alluringly sensual new addition to an area known more for its residential towers and business hotels.

And given that neither of these properties sees itself as a business hotel, each is determined to carve out its own ways to establish itself as a leisure hub.

Meanwhile, the Lana’s Promenade is forging a new marina-side food destination that promises to be a hit with guests and locals alike. Guests looking to add sand to their stay can head to a private beach on the Palm Jumeirah (zip over in the Lana’s Rolls-Royce or sail across by boat along the canal).

But what makes each of these new additions so exciting is the serenity they bring to new pockets of Dubai—in the heart of this fever dream of a city, tranquility is the most important amenity.

I'm a college student studying abroad. I'm shocked at how many luxury trips my classmates take.

• I was excited to study abroad in Florence and to take small, cheap trips while abroad.
• My classmates are not traveling cheaply; they are flying to luxury places like Dubai and the Alps.
• I wonder if they are just doing it for social media, but I'm still enjoying my time abroad.

As a third-year college student attending Colorado State University in Fort Collins, I jumped at the chance to study abroad . Trading in a semester of snow and freezing temperatures for beautiful architecture and centuries-old art was a no-brainer.

I was so excited that I filled out the application to study in Florence nearly a year before the day I would depart. Four months in Florence, Italy, was comparable to the cost of a semester at my state school . After talking to my parents and counselor, I believed the cultural experience and travel opportunities were worth it.

I knew that when I arrived, I would have to budget when traveling —doing so through communal hostel stays and low-cost airlines. I was prepared for overstuffed backpacks and bus tickets; upon arrival, though, it became clear that pinching pennies was not on everyone's agenda.

The other students are jet-setting every weekend to expensive locations

The first few days in Florence were comparable to a freshman welcome week. The time was full of activities, including hikes, dinners, and other various ventures to get students to meet one another. My roommates and I attended one of the dinners to make connections before classes began.

Standing among groups of strangers , I expected to converse about majors and hometowns; however, I witnessed a quiet competition between students on who would be going to the most places in the coming months.

Comments such as "I have every weekend planned and booked" or "I would go, but I've already been" were stacked on top of one another as my peers attempted to one-up each other. At this time, I had a total of zero trips planned. When caught in these conversations, I felt oddly pressured to also fill my calendar each weekend, accompanied by the feeling of stress due to not being able to afford travel every five days. I feared I would be left behind.

I've been here for over two months, and this conversation hasn't ended. Every Monday, I hear whispers about where my peers had jet-setted to days before. Places like Dubai and Morocco have been mentioned, leaving me just as shocked as that first dinner. I knew studying abroad was a privilege before getting here, but "a weekend in Dubai " was not what I expected.

Nobody is 'roughing it' like I thought they would be

My spring break was only three weeks into the start of the semester, and this was when I decided to take my first trip. When booking, I scoured sites, such as KAYAK and Skyscanner, but plane tickets and hotels were still extremely pricey. Eventually, my roommates and I decided to spend five days in Prague after finding affordable tickets on Ryanair. One of the greatest appeals of Prague was it was walkable, cheap, and had a good nightlife — my top three requirements as a traveling college student.

My three roommates and I booked a studio apartment for around $100 each for a total of five nights. It took us two trains, one bus, a plane, and some walking to get there, but the price was right. I was excited for the following week and felt satisfied with our trip and housing accommodations.

That was until I scrolled through Instagram to see my peers skiing in the Alps and skydiving in Copenhagen. It was almost unbelievable that the people I attend classes with could afford this style of travel while my school backpack was stuffed with a week's worth of clothes cause I opted out of the carry-on baggage fee Ryanair required.

I thought everyone at this stage made sacrifices when traveling, but I was mostly wrong.

I'm convinced people are traveling for the sake of their Instagram

I have a hard time wrapping my head around the fact that anyone can experience a new country in the span of 48 hours.

I do know, however, that people are really good at making their time away look like the best time ever on my Instagram feed . It's as if they're collecting comments like postcards or putting another notch in their belts by showing one another how many stamps they have accumulated in their passports.

Traveling while studying abroad is a competitive sport with a large price tag that no one told me to train for.

I've learned that such comparisons defeat the purpose of traveling. Maybe I haven't flown on the best airlines or stayed in an oceanfront villa, but my experiences abroad have been enriching and allowed me to engage with other cultures. Best of all? I didn't have to spend much money, and my Instagram still looks good.
