DAY TRIPS FROM SACRAMENTO: EXPLORE THE BEST PLACES IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA

I’ve often ranted in my previous posts about Sacramento (California’s capital city) which does not get as much love as the more glamorous coastal cousins like San Francisco or Los Angeles .

Home to the largest number of farm to fork restaurants in the state and some envious street art , Sacramento is also located strategically in Northern California, is near to some of its most beautiful cities and attractions and is one of the easiest road trips from San Francisco .

From lesser known small towns to more popular attractions , there are several Northern California day trip s that can be easily covered from the city. Much like day trips from the Bay Area , these getaways from Sacramento are the perfect way to get a taste of the diversity that Northern California has to offer, especially this part of the state that is known for its verdant farmlands.

Since day trips are best enjoyed with the least amount of driving involved, I have chosen almost all destinations that qualify as Sacramento day trips which are within driving time of 2 hours and under (one way, traffic conditions favoring), barring one which is the very last in this list (but also the most enchanting one that I simply could exclude). For each of these spots, I will provide several bucket list or itinerary ideas to fit in your day trip schedule.

And now, without further ado, here are the best day trip ideas to explore if you’re in or visiting Sacramento and have some extra time on your hands. to explore the other fantastic cities near Sacramento.

For your convenience, the destinations are listed on the order of distance (nearest ones first).

1. Take a break in Davis

Distance from Sacramento: 15 miles

Davis is a charming university town in Yolo county, right next to Sacramento county and is a mere 20 minutes drive west of Sacramento. Home to UC Davis, this university town is brimming with good eats, culture and arts and is a perfect mini break from Sacramento. The small size of this town makes it perfect for exploring during a short visit. Here are a few things to do when in Davis:

 • Explore downtown Davis and the many art installations on the streets (they have a 2nd Friday artwalk as well)
 • Enjoy outdoor dining at Davis Commons
 • Get a scoop of handcrafted ice cream from the famous Davis Creamery
 • Stop by one of the several art galleries to enjoy local art-I highly recommend the Artery
 • Enjoy the outdoors-go hiking in Putah Creek Riparian Reserve or stroll through the T. Elliot Weier Redwood grove
 • Visit the UC Davis Arboretum -best time to go is definitely Spring!

Day trip from Sacramento: Go to Davis and check out UC Davis Arboretum

2. Enjoy California’s farm life at Winters and Woodland, two of the best agrarian small towns near Sacramento

Distance from Sacramento: 20 miles (Woodland), 31 miles (Winters)

Both Winters and Woodland are primarily agrarian towns in Yolo County, west and north-west to Sacramento. Yolo County is the nut capital of the state from where we get our precious almonds, pecans and other goodies (California supplies 80% of the world’s almonds, by the way).

The best time to visit these Northern California towns from Sacramento is undoubtedly Spring to see the delicate, ephemeral almond blossoms that are a vision of white beauty. Visit between mid Feb-mid March after which these short lived blossoms are gone. Your best bet to see them is at farms along county road 98, Highway 16 and almond orchards outside of Winters.

Please be respectful of the fact that these are private farms and do not trespass if there signs asking you to stay out. Here are some of the best things to do in Winters and Woodland on a day trip from Sacramento; fit in whatever you can based on your schedule:

 • See the apple blossoms (mid February-mid March)
 • Visit the charming downtown in Winters
 • Go wine tasting at Main Street Cellars (downtown) or visit one of the nearby wineries/vineyards (see list here )
 • Go on a farm tour of the historic Olive Mill at Seka Hills in Capay Valley
 • Enjoy the outdoors at Stebbins Cold Canyon Reserve
 • Stop by for an happy hour at The Palms Playhouse for food, drinks and live music
 • Hike around Lake Berryessa to see the wildflowers in bloom in Spring
 • Visit the retro automobile Reiff’s Museum, Yolo County Historical Museum or California Agriculture Museum in Woodland
 • Catch a show at the historic Woodland Opera House Theatre
 • Grab a bite to eat at the Burger Saloon, indulge in upscale dining at Kitchen 428 and savor some beer at Blue Note Brewing Company (voted best brewery in Yolo county)
 • Stop to smell the roses at the beautiful rose garden surrounding the public library in Woodland
 • Go river rafting in Cache Canyon river
 • Visit the Lavender farms in Capay Valley or enjoy the yearly lavender festival at Cache Creek Lavender farms

Visit Winters and Woodland from Sacramento as a day trip

3. Explore the historic town of Folsom and Folsom Lake

Distance from Sacramento: 23 miles

The tiny town of Folsom is just 23 miles northeast of Sacramento, but it definitely packs in a lot for a day trip. This gold rush town has a historic old town, a very popular zoo that is sure to be a hit with kids, historic state park and quirky museums and a burgeoning food scene. Folsom’s prime attraction remains Lake Folsom which is known for its California lupine super bloom in April (come after Easter) which draws people from all over Northern California. Here is a suggested itinerary:

 • Explore historic Old Town and check out the businesses and restaurants on Sutter Street
 • Visit Folsom Powerhouse State Historic Park to tour the historic power house which utilized the water of the American River to turn the generators in the 19th century to produce electricity
 • If you are feeling adventurous, visit the Folsom Prison Museum
 • Sake lovers can check out the Gekkeikan Sake brewery , the only one outside of Fushimi, Japan
 • Enjoy the hiking trails at Lake Folsom

Day trips from Sacramento: lake Folsom

4. Indulge in some wine tasting at Lodi (easily one of the most fun day trips in Northern California)

Distance from Sacramento: 36 miles

Sacramento is pretty close to the world famous Napa Valley, the crowning jewel of California’s wine country. Although thousands of wine enthusiasts flock to Napa every year, the one tiny city that is often passed up is Lodi, the Zinfandel capital of the world!

Lodi’s is home to some of the most beautiful, yet affordable wineries in California and is perfect for those of you who love the wine tasting experience minus the steep price tag and crowds. Lodi is an easy day trip from Sacramento (40 minutes drive south) and here are the best things to do in this town:

 • Goes without saying, but go for some wine tasting here. My guide on the different Lodi wineries can come handy
 • Spend some quiet time near Lodi Lake
 • Explore downtown Lodi which is supercute and charming
 • Try the “Lodi Grape Pie” pizza at Smack Pie Pizza
 • Go for a romantic dinner at Towne House Restaurant

5. Visit the vibrant town of Placerville, one of the most popular places to visit in Northern California

Distance from Sacramento: 44 miles

Placerville is a town in El Dorado county that is worth a day trip from Sacramento and a fun spot to check out on a San Francisco to Lake Tahoe road trip . Once known as “Hangtown” in the Gold Rush days (due to several vigilante style hangings), modern day Placerville boasts of a vibrant historic downtown on Main Street filled with lots of amazing businesses, wine tasting rooms, restaurants and bars. When in Placerville, I recommend doing the following:

 • Discover historic downtown on Main Street
 • Stop by the El Dorado County Historical Museum -a guided tour is a fun way to learn about the Gold Rush history of El Dorado county
 • Indulge in some Olive Oil tasting at Winterhill Olive Oil Store
 • Stop by Totem Coffee for good coffee and local craft beer on tap
 • Enjoy a delicious meal at one of the several world class restaurants in Placerville

Visit Placerville as a day trip from Sacramento

6. Enjoy wine tasting in Amador county

Distance from sacramento: 45 miles.

Amador county is that up and coming wine region in California that is not only affordable but also a true hidden gem where the wines are as delicious as they come, without costing one a pretty penny. Add to this a burgeoning food scene and the laid back charm of the gold rush towns of Amador city, Plymouth, Jackson and Sutter Creek, and you are looking at a nice little day trip about an hour southeast of Sacramento. Here is how to keep yourself busy in Amador county:

 • Go for some dog friendly wine tasting at Wine Tree Farms & Corrine Wines : Corrine is a delightful host and so are her three dogs!
 • Check out downtown Amador city for good eats and vintage shopping as well as the Amador Whitney Museum. I recommend stopping by 3 Fish Studio and Gallery (they used to be in San Francisco), the End of Nowhere for good food and wine and Holgate Hill for wine (all these places are dog friendly)
 • Stop by for dinner and drinks at Element in Sutter Creek: they have yummy food and yummier cocktails. Sutter Greek is another great option for brunch.
 • No visit to Gold Country is complete without a tour of one of the mines that remain as symbols of the California Gold Rush. So definitely join a tour of Kennedy Gold Mine , that is now a museum and is open on weekends from March-October!

Day trips from Sacramento: Visit Amador City

7. Explore Napa Valley as a day trip from Sacramento (my favorite of all the Northern California day trips)

Distance from Sacramento: 71 miles

Napa Valley is synonymous with California wine country and is one of the most romantic getaways in Northern California . Although the primary attraction here is undoubtedly tasting the delicious, bold red Cabernets at the different big and small wineries, there is a wealth of things to do this region if you’re not into drinking wine.

Napa’s unparalleled natural beauty, rolling vineyards and a world class dining scene makes it one of the best day trips in Northern California from Sacramento and is not to be missed.

Since a day trip to Napa from Sacramento does not involve a lot of time , I highly suggest picking one or two towns in Napa Valley for wine tasting and other activities. Also, remember to make prior reservations for all your wine tasting. Here are some of the best things to do in Napa Valley on a day trip:

 • Go wine tasting (and, winery tour) in large wineries or small, boutique wineries to taste Napa’s delicious, bold Cabernets-here are some of the best Napa wineries for first timers
 • Get a seat on the popular Napa Valley Wine Train -a three hour round trip through the heart of Napa Valley with world famous dining and stops at some of the best wineries in the valley
 • Drive down the scenic Silverado Trail (stretches from Napa to Calistoga)
 • Explore downtown St. Helena and Yountville
 • Visit the petrified forest in Calistoga
 • Check out the “Old Faithful” mini geyser on Tubbs lane in Calistoga (read my Calistoga guide here for details)
 • Enjoy the outdoors at Bothe-Napa Valley State Park (5 miles north of St. Helena)
 • Book a spa massage in Calistoga
 • Dine at some of the best restaurants in the world: French Laundry, Bouchon Bakery, Ad-Hoc, Restaurant at Meadowood, Gott’s Roadside, Farmstead, La Calenda, Boon Fly Cafe and Solbar
 • Visit Napa’s popular Oxbow Marketplace
 • Discover the many art galleries, museums and art installations scattered all over Napa

A guide to the best day trips from Sacramento-Napa Valley

8. Discover the quirky charm of Murphy’s in Calaveras county, one of the best places to visit near Sacramento

Distance from Sacramento: 87 miles

Murphys is that charming dog friendly small town in California that mostly lies under the radar (like me finding it out from another colleague who is a dog parent) and is located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas in Calaveras county. Calaveras county was made famous in Mark Twain’s prose when he wrote about “ The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County”, so expect to be greeted by quirky bull frog statues strewn everywhere in this tiny town. Although and 1hr and 40 minutes away from Sacramento, you can spend a fun day in this small California town doing the following:

 • Explore downtown/Main street
 • Get some baked goodies at Aria bakery
 • Go wine tasting at Gossamer Cellars, Twisted Oak, Frog’s Tooth and Chatom winery
 • Have a picnic at Murphys community park (with a gurgling brook to keep you company)
 • Hike the Arnold Rim Trail

Visit Murphys in Calaveras county

9. Spend a day in San Francisco: one of the best cities to visit near Sacramento

Distance from Sacramento: 88 miles

San Francisco and Sacramento are not as far apart as most people think they are, in fact the city by the bay is only 1.5 hours away from the capital! The best part about this trip is that you don’t even need a car cause Flix Buses ply between these two cities regularly! However, driving by car is still the fastest way to get to San Francisco from Sacramento.

San Francisco has been my home for the last 11 years and I can tell you one thing with 100% confidence- a day trip from Sacramento to San Francisco is not enough to see this popular tourist destination, despite it being pint sized. However, that does not mean you don’t venture out at all and just sit tight at home with a glum face. As a resident, here are my top tips on what do in San Francisco on a day trip to make the best of your time:

 • Treat your day trip like a layover (but with the added advantage of having a car if you’re driving in)- choose from the 8-12 hour longer itinerary to see the best of SF in a short time. It lists some of the best attractions in San Francisco that you can see in a short time
 • If you’re driving into San Francisco, I suggest exploring one or two of some of the best neighborhoods in San Francisco. This guide has all the information you need on where to eat and best things to see in every neighborhood (and how to get there if you don’t have a car)
 • San Francisco is a foodie haven-check out at least one of these foodie experiences , where to find the best desserts (including artisan chocolate stores) , cheap eats, vegetarian restaurants and where to enjoy some sumptuous afternoon tea !
 • Take in some of the best views of the Golden Gate Bridge from different parts of the city
 • If you have more time or are into photography-check out the best San Francisco photo spots and hidden gems in the city
 • If you’re visiting San Francisco for the first time from Sacramento-remember to dress in layers because of our crazy weather and check out my guide to the best time to visit San Francisco for seasonal attractions
 • Some of the best views of San Francisco are experienced on a hike and SF has many urban hikes to choose from-get on a short trail to see rugged coastal views!
 • End your visit to San Francisco with a gorgeous sunset at one of its two secret beaches
 • San Francisco is also very dog friendly and has many dog friendly beaches – so don’t leave your pup behind on this day trip!

San Francisco can be covered as a day trip from Sacramento

10. Unwind with some downtime at Clear Lake

Distance from Sacramento: 94 miles

Clear Lake is the largest freshwater lake in California (cuz Tahoe is shared with Nevada) and is located in Lake County. Not only is the lake attractive for watersports, lakeside parks and views, but it is also a prime spot for many amazing low-key wineries where wine tasting is not a stuffy affair like in Napa (and also not expensive). Having been to Clear Lake last year , here are my recommendations on the best things to do on a day trip from Sacramento:

 • Stop by Lucerne harbor park or Redbud Park for lakeviews like no other
 • Explore some tranquil nature trails in Clear Lake State Park
 • Hop onto a Kayak from Clear Lake County Park in Kelseyville or rent one from Disney Boat Rentals on 401 S. Main Street.
 • Check out the historic downtown Lakeport and quirky art galleries in Kelseyville
 • Do at least one wine tasting- Cache Creek Vineyards and Laujor estate winery are my top picks.

Day trips from Sacramento: Visit Clearlake

DAY TRIPS IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA: PLACES TO VISIT WITHIN 3 HOURS OF SACRAMENTO

11. visit muir woods national monument.

Distance from Sacramento: 96 miles

Muir Woods National Monument is probably the most famous Redwood Grove in the Bay Area and one of the most popular ones to visit in California (a state famous for its Giant Sequoias and Coastal Redwoods). Named after the famous Scottish-American naturalist John Muir, this protected area is home to old growth Coastal Redwoods that are 250 feet high and 400-800 years old!

Muir woods lies north of San Francisco in Mill Valley (Marin county) and is 1hr 40 mins drive southwest from Sacramento. Here are some itinerary ideas for Muir Woods (remember, prior reservations are needed to park or catch the shuttle):

 • Wander around amidst the majestic Redwoods or get on one of the many trails here-there are 6 miles of hiking trails in Muir Woods!
 • Check out the town of Mill Valley -downtown Mill Valley has many beautiful stores and restaurants. Get some baked goods at Flour Craft Bakery in Mill Valley Lumber Yard, feast on a Puerto Rican plate at Sol Food or get a taste of Indo-Mexican at Avatar’s Punjabi Burritos (an institution of Marin county)
 • Discover a a fantastic local waterfall that you can hike to in Mill Valley
 • Explore Mt. Tamalpais-a great place for hiking!
 • Enjoy the views from Muir Beach lookout or drive up further west to Stinson beach

Dogs are unfortunately not allowed at Muir Woods. Also, if this is not obvious, Muir Woods is an extremely popular destination with people coming in from all over the world to marvel at the Redwoods. I highly recommend visiting on a weekday if possible come in as early as possible to avoid the crowds on a weekend.

Muir Woods National Monument

12. Enjoy a day out at Truckee

Distance from Sacramento: 100 miles

The Gold Rush town of Truckee is close to Squaw Valley (site of the 1960 Winter Olympics) and is a world class skiing destination, but what Truckee is perhaps best known for is its proximity to Lake Tahoe, historic downtown, the emigrant trail and of course the tragedy of the Donner Party . I highly recommend spending at least half a day in Truckee if you’re on your way to Lake Tahoe from Sacramento. Here are all the fun things to do in Truckee:

 • Explore the historic downtown in Truckee along Donner Pass Road-I loved the CA89 Home Store, High Camp Home and Bespoke Ateliers along with several art galleries and other gift stores
 • Snap a photo of the colorful Truckee Mural right next to the USPS Post Office
 • Visit the Donner Memorial State Park which is home to the Donner museum (inside the visitor center) and the Pioneer Monument
 • Spend some time by Donner Lake-you can get a bird’s eye view of the lake from the overlook area along Donner Pass road

Day trips in Northern California from Sacramento: truckee is a great destination

13. Plan a brief getaway to Lake Tahoe, one of the best Northern California day trips to explore

Distance from Sacramento: 113 miles

Lake Tahoe is the tranquil, freshwater alpine lake at the border of California and Nevada which is a popular hot spot for Californians year around. From winter skiing to water sports and from hiking to chilling out at the beaches, Tahoe has it all for outdoor and nature lovers. Clocking in at 2 hours from Sacramento (without traffic of course), this day trip is as tempting as it gets to leave the daily grind behind and soak in the goodness of Mother Nature.

I highly recommend Tahoe in Spring , Fall or Winter (if you are into winter sports which I am not) to witness the magic of seasonal change in scenery that only the Sierras can offer. Summer does get too crowded and hot everywhere. Since a day trip from Sacramento to Tahoe is not a whole lot of time, here are a few suggestions for possible itineraries-just pick and choose what you like:

 • Pack a picnic basket to some of the most pristine beaches of Lake Tahoe-here are 10 fabulous ones to choose from
 • Spend an entire day on the scenic drive loop of Lake Tahoe -i.e., drive around the lake for spectacular views, sandy beaches, state parks, hidden coves and alpine hikes
 • Go hiking in Lake Tahoe to experience the beauty and wilderness of the Sierra Nevadas-here are 10 best Lake Tahoe hikes to choose from
 • Enjoy some waterfront dining at Lake Tahoe with good food and great views-I recommend Artemis Mediterranean Grill

Lake Tahoe is a wonderful day trip or weekend getaway from Sacramento

14. Answer the call of the Sierras at Yosemite National Park-the most gorgeous Northern California day trip from Sacramento

Distance from Sacramento: 165 miles

At the risk of being eye rolled on a massive scale by residents of the Golden State, I’ll go ahead and include Yosemite National Park in the list of day trips from Sacramento. Sounds a bit preposterous I agree, but this is one of the best places to visit near Sacramento and should be on your list.

Honestly, if a 4 hour drive from San Francisco to Yosemite does not deter dozens of day tour operations, then a 3-3.5 hour drive from Sacramento does not seem that bad to see one of the most beautiful places on earth aka the alpine wilderness that is the crown jewel of California’s National Parks.

Leave very early (let’s say at daybreak like in those historical movies) to hit the road, avoid the traffic and spend some quality time in Yosemite Valley, one of the most magical places on earth.

Again, Yosemite is best visited anytime of the year except Summer (when the park gets unbelievably crowded thanks to its sky-high popularity). Spring is a great time to see waterfalls while Fall will woo you with its bejeweled foliage. Here are a few ways to enjoy a day trip to Yosemite:

 • Go on easy day hikes in the Yosemite Valley
 • Enjoy the grand vistas and views at several parts of the valley such as Tunnel View, El Capitan Meadow and Cook’s Meadow (great for sunrise or sunset)
 • Wander through the Giant Sequoias at Mariposa Grove, Tuolumne Grove and Merced Grove
 • Visit the gold rush town of Mariposa for its historic museums
 • Visit the famous Ansel Adams Gallery
 • Visit at least one of the many alpine lakes in and around the valley (best to visit during spring). Mirror Lake is the easiest to reach
 • Have at least one meal at The Ahwahnee Dining Room in the valley

Day Trip to Davis California

The City of Davis, California, located just 15 miles west of Sacramento, has a long history of being environmentally friendly and encouraging a “green” lifestyle. This college town is primarily built in and around the University of California, Davis campus and strongly supports art, culture, and local farming efforts.

A thriving downtown shopping district, the prestigious Mondavi Center, and the UC Davis Arboretum make this day trip a great way to experience a leisurely afternoon like a local.

Downtown Davis California

With several annual events, including the Whole Earth Festival, Picnic Day, and many Culture Days, there’s always something uniquely Davis around town.

The City of Davis is also synonymous with bikes. Home to the U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame , Davis has been ranked a Platinum-level Bicycle Friendly Community and boasts the highest number of bicycles per capita in the USA. Even the city’s logo includes an outline of an old fashion, Penny-farthing bicycle. The 12 miles long Davis Bike Route takes riders through much of The Greenbelt, a long stretch of parks and scenic bike paths.

U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame

Visitors without bikes need not feel left out. Downtown Davis, California, is great for travelers on foot, and the London-style double-decker buses make stops throughout the UC Davis campus and the twice-weekly farmer’s market. Downtown Davis also has several public parking lots that provide free or trim fee options depending on the length of stay.

The Davis Farmer’s Market is packed with local produce, fresh baked goods, and local arts and crafts. Located in Central Park on C Street, the market is held Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Davis Farmer's Market

Many farmer’s market vendors supply local restaurants with fresh, organic ingredients. Expect a more massive crowd and more vendors on Saturdays.

For especially fresh fruits and veggies, head to Impossible Acres farm on the west edge of town. This small U-pick, family farm is open from late May through late October. Some of the crops include blackberries, raspberries, peaches, apples, and pumpkins.

Beer Shoppe Davis

Prepared meals for all palates are available at the many eateries around town. Visit local favorite, Village Bakery, for great pizza and pastries. The Mustard Seed and Seasons are excellent choices for upscale dining.

Beer lovers won’t want to miss The Davis Beer Shoppe, where food is not on the menu, but more than 600 different bottled beers and several on tap are available.

Dining Davis California

Sweet and Shavery Davis

Dessert options are just as prevalent with shops like Cream, The Candy House of Davis and Sweet, and Shavery. Ice cream sandwiches are the stars of Cream, while Italian ice topped with frozen custard draws crowds to Sweet and Shavery. Gourmet truffles and chocolate are handmade daily at The Candy House of Davis.

More than two dozen art galleries and many public art installations can be found throughout Davis and the UC Davis campus. The Mondavi Center For The Performing Arts hosts performers from all over the world. From dance to music to theatre, renowned Mondavi Center events and concerts are held year-round.

UC Davis Arboretum

UC Davis Arboretum

Davis, California’s crowning jewel, may well be the UC Davis Arboretum. The gardens are open 24 hours a day, and there is no admission fee.

Adventures Outside of Davis

You're in Davis. It's the weekend. OR maybe it's not. But regardless you're bored and you're tired and want to get out of Davis. But where can you go and how long will it take to get there? The destinations are broken down by approximate driving time if you drive without stopping (or traffic slowdown) and at the posted speed limit.

Also see Outdoor Activities and follow some links or check out Hiking and Backpacking for lots of wilderness destination leads. The Northern California page contains a lot of information also. UCD students interested in archaeology and outdoor activities might consider the field schools offered by the Anthropology department. And don't forget about Beaches , although some particular ones are listed below.

If you require something more linear , see I-80 car-trips ("Idiot proof trips").

For trips inside California, you can check road conditions on the Department of Transportation Website or visit the website TrafficReport.com to obtain traffic information for areas in California.

Adventuring Tips

 • Of course, if you're not at least 25, several companies will not rent to you, while others will charge you an outrageous fee. Having a AAA membership or creating an account with USAA might waive the under 25 fee.
 • Be sure to bring one or many co-adventurers. If none of your friends share your wanderlust, perhaps the Ride Board can hook you up.
 • AAA is your friend. In addition to towing, lock-out and fuel delivery services, they also can make road trip calamities better. If your car breaks down, many AAA memberships will pay for your hotel and food costs while your vehicle is being fixed or, alternatively, your return transportation (either air, bus, train or rental car). Keep in mind, however, that the AAA frequently advocates against bicycle-friendly laws and infrastructure when there is no benefit to automobiles. A more bicycle-friendly alternative is The Better World Club .
 • Don't forget your cell phone charger. And don't expect your cell phone to work in the middle of Nevada.
 • The Davis Travelaires lead trips that can help get you comfortable and excited about travel.
 • Note: If you are driving through LA on the I-5, remember that the Grapevine can be tricky for older cars to navigate smoothly, and that downtown LA traffic is not your friend.

A Picnic For All Ages

Apr 22, 2024 | Out and About

The 110th Picnic Day brought out the crowds on Saturday for more than 200 events, including DIY activities, performances, animal demonstrations, research exhibitions, giveaways, food service and more. Believed to be the largest student-run event in the nation, this year’s Picnic Day celebrated the theme “Picnic Palooza,” and a gorgeous California day made everything even brighter.

Photography by Gregory Urquiaga

After the opening ceremony, the parade kicked off on campus before meandering through downtown Davis. This year’s parade marshal was Sheri Atkinson, associate vice chancellor for student life, campus community and retention services in Student Affairs.

Maze Matters

A perennial Picnic Day favorite: Visitors navigated their way through a maze made entirely of laser beams inside Kemper Hall.

Off to the Races

The Doxie Derby always provides a little cuteness with the tiny dogs running across the Pavilion floor to cheering audiences.

Egghead Art

At the Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art, visitors made their own mini interpretations of campus Egghead sculptures. In celebration of the public art installations, licensed Egghead merchandise was also available for sale.

Giveaways Galore

The day wouldn’t be complete without a nod to our agricultural prowess: Visitors enjoyed plenty of giveaways, including tomato plants, strawberry plants and dried corn that could be shelled for popcorn.

We built wine country.

UC Davis is one of the world authorities in winemaking, and we helped to establish wine country in Northern California. We are surrounded by some of the best vineyards on earth. In under an hour, you can drive to Napa Valley, Mendocino County or the Sierra Nevada foothills.

Napa Valley

The world renowned Napa Valley is only a forty-five minute drive from campus.

A fertile green valley stretches ahead with a vineyard in the midground.

Sonoma Valley

West of Napa, Sonoma County produces more wine than any other area in the state.

A windmill turns in the foreground with beautiful rolling hills covered in vineyards behind it.

Mendocino County

In unspoiled coastal country, Mendocino offers a uniquely laidback wine country with amazing food.

If you’re not from California, like us, fly into the San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport (SBP). It’s a small airport and easy to get in and out of.

You’ll want to rent a car if you’re flying in. Pick up your vehicle at the airport by the baggage claim area (it’s super easy).

The Central Coast of California has a Mediterranean climate, meaning you can visit year-round. However, depending on the type of adventures you want, like getting in or on the water, spring, summer, and fall will have warmer temperatures. June, July, and August are busy, so be sure to plan ahead if you travel during the summer.

We visited during April. It was warm enough to wear a light jacket. Every day was sunny except for two days when the famous coastal fog rolled in. It was neat to see the fog, so it didn’t mess up our plans. We still hiked and explored until it burned off later in the day.

The wildflowers bloomed during our spring trip, and we saw the elephant seals. I can’t recommend the beauty of traveling along Highway 1 in the spring enough.

Celebrate Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship at PLASMA Demo Day

 • by Aurora Bi
 • April 25, 2024

On May 2, 2024, in California Hall, ten teams of undergraduate student entrepreneurs will pitch their companies to industry experts at Demo Day. The annual event is the culminating experience of PLASMA , a 12-week early-stage cohort accelerator program organized by the Student Startup Center at the University of California, Davis.

"At the Student Startup Center, we're all about helping student founders solve some of the biggest problems on the planet," shared Aaron Anderson , director of the Student Startup Center. "For twelve weeks, we throw everything we've got at these teams to help them refine their businesses, and in the end, it's remarkable what they've built. Demo Day is the culmination of all of that work."

This year's PLASMA teams are working on a wide range of innovative solutions, including AI-powered essay grading tools, revolutionizing the recruitment industry and more. Meet the 2024 teams:

ColentAl aims to revolutionize the recruitment industry with new collaborative technologies gathering real data to back resumes coupled with deep web search.

CounselHero

For school counselors and students who seek a more personalized and efficient approach to academic and career planning, CounselHero is an innovative digital counseling platform. Unlike traditional counseling methods or basic ed-tech tools, CounselHero leverages AI-driven insights and interactive tools to provide tailored guidance, empowering students with clear, data-informed decisions for their future.

For healthcare institutions that need a discrete, wearable device to prescribe to epileptics to prevent injuries from seizures, EpiSense is an EEG headband, unlike indirect competitors who cannot predict seizures.

For candy consumers who are looking for a healthy, low-calorie, and all-natural alternative, Fit Candy is a candy product made from upcycled watermelon rinds which is unlike its competitors because it is not only a low-calorie and healthy candy alternative, it is also made with real fruit and all-natural ingredients while also aiding in reducing food waste by making use of an upcycled food with tremendous nutritional potential.

The Make Box provides creative, hands-on DIY robotics kits with online educational programs for middle school students and parents interested in innovative STEM education. Unlike traditional STEM curriculums and one-time-use projects, The Make Box develops fun, multipurpose kits paired with strong mentorship from high school & college instructors to help foster lifelong passions in STEM.

For artificial nail users who experience damage from the harsh chemicals and processes of a manicure, SeaNails is an all-natural, biodegradable, waste-based extension nail manicure that is nourishing to the nail bed by way of our collagen-based nail glue while its biodegradability allows for use as an organic fertilizer, unlike traditional nail manicures (acrylic, dip powder, etc.) that are plastic-based, destroying both your nail bed and the environment.

For pool owners who need a chemical maintenance and safety solution, Splash is a smart pool product that measures pool chemicals via a sensor box and monitors the pool for accidental falls via a smart camera. Splash offers ease of mind by 24/7 chemical and video monitoring unlike pool services and other monitoring devices that are expensive and unreliable.

Square Solutions

For research labs and hospitals that develop and administer cell therapies, Square Solutions is a portable cell incubator that bridges the gap between research and clinical environments unlike the current transportation method, which is proven to reduce cell therapy efficacy.

For educators and schools who struggle with the time-consuming task of grading essays and providing personalized feedback, Tallyrus is an AI-powered essay grading tool that offers rapid, detailed, and tailored feedback on student writing, unlike Turnitin or Canvas where teachers must grade every essay manually.

For music-loving people who want to make an authentic connection, Wavelength is a dating app that uses musical compatibility to match users with others in their area, unlike Tinder, Bumble or Hinge, which promote easy but ultimately shallow connections with others through generic, quantity-based schematics.

Be a part of birding’s biggest team! Global Big Day is an annual celebration of the birds around you. No matter where you are, join us virtually on 11 May, help celebrate World Migratory Bird Day , and share the birds you find with eBird.

Participating is easy—you can even be part of Global Big Day from home. If you can spare 5 or 10 minutes, report your bird observations to eBird online or with our free eBird Mobile app . If you have more time, submit several checklists of birds throughout the day. You never know what you might spot. Your observations help us better understand global bird populations through products like these animated abundance maps brought to you by eBird Science.

Last year, Global Big Day collected more data about birds on a single day than ever before. More than 58,000 people gathered 3.2 million bird observations on 148,000 checklists, setting new world records for a single day of birding. Will you help us make this the year we surpass 150,000 checklists on a single day?

A total of 401 species were recorded and 15,137 checklists were submitted by an incredible 9,533 eBirders in Canada – the second highest number of eBirders and checklists submitted in the world! You can explore all of the Canadian 2023 Global Big Day stats here .

How to participate

 • Get an eBird account: eBird is a worldwide bird checklist program used by millions of birders. It’s what allows us to compile everyone’s reports into a single massive Global Big Day list—while at the same time collecting data to help scientists better understand birds. Sign up here. It’s 100% free from start to finish.
 • Enjoy birds on 11 May: It’s that simple. You don’t need to be a bird expert or go out all day long, even 10 minutes of birding from home counts. Global Big Day runs from midnight to midnight in your local time zone. You can report what you find from anywhere in the world.
 • Enter what you see and hear in eBird: You can enter your sightings via our website or download the free eBird Mobile app to make submitting lists even easier. Please enter your checklists before 14 May to be included in our initial results announcement.
 • Watch the results roll in: During the day, follow along with bird observations from more than 200 countries in real-time on our Global Big Day page .

eBird Trip Reports on Global Big Day

Taylor swift & travis kelce’s carmel-by-the-sea getaway with bradley cooper & gigi hadid.

day trips davis ca

Travis Swift and Travis Kelce recently enjoyed a day trip to Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, with her pals Gigi Hadid and Bradley Cooper.

On Wednesday, Travis’ mom Donna Kelce shared the news at the QVC’s Age of Possibility summit, People reports .

Donna revealed that Travis even sent her a photo from the getaway.

During the trip, Cooper learned that he would be going to the same QVC event as Donna in Las Vegas.

When Donna and Bradley saw each other at the event, she told him, “Travis told me you were going to be here.”

Though Donna wanted Travis to be in attendance, he couldn’t be there since he was wrapping production on “Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity?,” a spin-off of “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?”

Bradley was at the summit with his food truck Danny & Coop’s Cheesesteaks, serving lunch to the event’s honorees.

Some of the big names were recognized include Christina Applegate, Patti LaBelle, Rita Wilson, Naomi Watts, Martha Stewart and Queen Latifah.

Famed chef Sandra Lee even posted a pic of Bradley in his food truck!

Waiting for your permission to load the Instagram Media.

It is no surprise that Taylor and Travis had a double date with Bradley and Gigi.

In October, it was reported that Swift offered the keys to her Rhode Island home to Gigi and Bradley so they could enjoy some time outside of the Big Apple.

A source told The Mirror U.K., “Even though Gigi and Bradley have their own properties in New York, they wanted somewhere more private to spend time getting to know each other and Taylor was only too happy to help.”

They added, “Taylor is a total romantic and loves playing cupid for her friends.”
