Big Bass Tour officials report on Chickamauga Lake results

by Richard Simms

Banks Shaw from Harrison, Tenn. recenlt won a fully rigged Nitro Z18 with a 150 HP Mercury outboard in the Big Bass Tournament on Chickamauga Lake. Tournament officials said they saw no signs of any negative impact on the bass population following a recent fish kill on the lake. (Photo courtesy Big Bass Tour)

DAYTON, Tenn. — The 8th annual Big Bass Tour event wrapped up on Chickamauga Lake earlier this week. Unlike traditional bass fishing tournaments, where anglers weigh in five bass at the end of the day, the Big Bass Tour provides amateur anglers from all skill levels the opportunity to win multiple cash payouts each day during the hourly weigh-ins. Each of the three tournament days features seven hourly weigh-ins that pay ten cash payouts each hour. That means each three-day event offers a total of 210 hourly cash payouts with a total of $150,000 in prizes and payouts.

Banks Shaw from Harrison, Tenn. was this year's overall "Big Bass" winner. His 10.06-pound bass won Shaw a fully outfitted 2023 NITRO Z18 with a Mercury 150L Pro XS outboard.

Following the recent fish kill on Chickamauga Lake , primarily among channel catfish, many anglers and lake users have expressed concerns about the health of the lake. Some anglers reported dead largemouth bass they feared might be associated with the fish kill.

In cooperation with Tennessee tourism officials, Big Bass Tour event officials compiled and shared historical data on the tournament's catch for the last three years. Tournament Organizer Mark Jones said, "Chickamauga is fine, in our opinion, and we don’t see anything out of the ordinary. We’ve hosted events on the lake for 8 years now and all of the datapoints essentially remain the same. I’ll also mention, because of our format (big bass), we see the best sampling of large fish from the entirety of the Chickamauga fishery."

Jones reports that over the three-day 2023 tournament, anglers weighed in a total of 419 bass with an average weight of 4.03 pounds.

Jones said, "This is well in line with 2022 and 2021, where we had 416 bass with an average of 4.17-pounds and 388 bass with an average of 4.18-pounds respectively.

"Our Top 10 bass were 10.06, 10.05, 9.69, 9.13, 9.07, 8.49. 8.13, 7.75, 7.68 and 7.36 respectively. There is nothing in our data that points to any significant decline in the quality of the bass population or fishing in general," added Jones. “Coming into the event, we were notified of social media posts indicating that there was a potential issue, so we made sure that our fishcare team paid special attention to check for any issues or signs of impact to the bass population prior to releasing them back into Chickamauga Lake each day and we are happy to report we didn’t find a single bass with anything out of the ordinary.” said Jones.

Big Bass Tour brings anglers to Clarks Hill Lake this weekend

Anglers getting ready for $150,00 in guaranteed prizes and payouts.

Big Bass Tour

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Bass Pro Shops Big Bass Tour is at Clarks Hill Lake March for the Cabela’s Georgia Big Bass Classic.

Joey Mauldin of Tignall nabbed the top spot after bringing in an 8.84 beast Friday, “people asked me if the biggest fish ever cop had one just a little bit bigger but not much. This is just way past my imagination of something like this happening but it’s really it’s really great. Really great.”

Mauldin took home the top prize, a brand-new 2024 NITRO Z18 rigged with a Mercury 150L Pro XS outboard and all the bells and whistles you could hope for as a bass angler.

Outside Mauldin, the top five finishers were: (2) Justin Raines, 8.28, (3) Jason Sullens 7.06, (4) Matt Mixon 6.85 and Hunter Temples 6.77.

The tournament started Friday and continues through the weekend out of Wildwood Park in Columbia County.

Anglers are competing for $150,000 in prizes and payouts.

This tournament is different than common five-fish tournament systems.

This tournament is broken down into hour windows over three days.

The stage was set at Wildwood Park for the Big Bass Classic fishing tournament.

Anglers bring in their biggest fish during the hour window and the top weights are awarded with cash prizes.

The biggest bass of the entire three day tournament will win the grand prize.

There is a long list of rules and anglers need to make sure they follow each one to qualify to win. Click here to read the complete set of rules.

The Big Bass Tour has made a stop at Clarks Hill nine years in a row. Last year, the top 5 weights were:

1. Hal Sharpe - 9.39 pounds.

2. Greg Seeger - 7.81 pounds.

3. Levin Barnes - 7.73 pounds.

4. Bart Blackburn - 7.33 pounds.

5. Jarrad Rees - 7.31 pounds.

Stayed within a couple miles of the dam area all 3 days.

Friday had the lowest wind and I only caught a non-keeper smallmouth halfway back in a creek during the morning hours. Made a move to a short pocket off the main lake and picked up 3 keeper LM all on a 1/2oz jig in less than 10ft of water. One was a 4.25 and that fish got me 8th place for one of hours.

Day 2 Saturday

moderate-strong winds. Caught 3 keepers all day, 2 on a bigger 3/4oz spinnerbait and one on a jig. All fish were caught in less than 10ft of water. Traffic in coves were busy do the wind on the main lake so I did not get to fish a lot of the areas I wanted to. None of the keepers were big enough to weigh in, all were 2 1/2 lbs.

Day 3 Sunday

Still had moderate to strong winds all day. Less boat traffic since MLF tournaments were done. I started on a wind blown main lake point and caught 4 keepers in the morning. 1 on a swim jig and 3 on the A-rig. Once the clouds cleared the A-rig bite died. Made a move to short main lake pockets. Picked up the 1/2oz jig and went to work targeting the shelf rock with drop offs. I caught 6-7 keepers on the jig but again, all 2-2.8 lb fish. In the afternoon I ran way back in a creek to get out of the wind. Caught 2 more on the a-rig and 1 more on the jig. I had 2  12-13 lb limits but no money fish and overall had a blast!

I learn more each time I get to fish table rock which is only 1-2 times a year. I always appreciate the information shared on this page as it has really helped me catch more fish!
