How To Open A Car Locked With The Key Fob Inside

dodge journey key locked inside

Is your key fob locked in the car? It may seem alarming because the car isn’t supposed to lock with a keyless entry remote inside. Doesn’t the key fob unlock my doors automatically? How does this happen? We will discuss the circumstances that lead to a key fob locked in a car and how to get back inside.

Reasons for a car locked with the key fob inside are :

  • Sensor Range
  • Key Problems
  • Damaged Lock

The basic solutions for a key fob locked in the car are :

  • Key Reeling
  • Lock Manipulation
  • Call A Locksmith

Can I lock my key fob in my car?

Yes, it is possible to lock a car with the key fob inside. You can do this purposefully if you need the fob to remain in the car to protect it from loss or damage. It is also possible to get your key fob locked in the car by accident. Accidental lockouts can be solved in several ways.

How do I open my car if the key fob is locked inside?

With your key fob locked in the car, there are three primary solutions. You can move the working key toward a sensor location, manipulate the interior door switches/buttons, or call a locksmith. Doing the work yourself requires tools and time, so if you do not have both, contact a locksmith.

What tools can I use to open a locked car with the key fob inside?

When your key fob is locked in your car, the most versatile tool for the job is a length of thin and bendable metal. Classically an unwound wire hanger is the preferred DIY tool. If you go with a locksmith’s car lockout service , they will have professional tools, and there will be no risk of damage to the vehicle.

Is a locksmith able to open a car with the key fob locked inside?

There are certain automotive locksmiths with specific expertise in opening locked cars. These locksmiths are familiar with the security features and bypasses for countless makes and models. They also have enough experience to ensure the car will not be harmed while opening.

Why Your Key Fob Is Locked In The Car

Most of the time, a car with a keyless entry fob will have safety features to stop you from getting your key fob locked in the car. But there are reasons that those precautions may not work, and before you know it, your key fob is locked in your car, and you don’t know how it happened.

1. Sensor Range

You can end up with a key fob locked in a car if the fob is too far away from the keyless proximity sensors. You may have experienced instances similar to this when pushing the ignition button returns a “No Key Detected” message. With no key detected, the car can lock.

There are all types of features in keyless entry vehicles to prevent a situation where a key fob is locked in the car. For example, with most modern cars you cannot lock keys in the trunk because there are sensors to detect the key. But most cars have sensor dead zones.

If your car key fob is out of range of all sensors, none of the failsafes that stop the car from locking will protect you. The sensor ranges vary from vehicle to vehicle, but you may be able to hook the key fob locked in the car and pull it closer to the door, so it can unlock.

2. Key Problems

When a key is damaged, the vehicle may have a hard time sensing it. Intermittent issues with batteries can be caused by sudden or extreme fluctuations in the temperature. In these cases, it is very similar to the key being out of sensor range, but the solutions will be more limited.

Even when you solve the problem of the key fob locked in the car, you have to address the potential need for key fob replacement . Not having a working key should not prevent you from being able to get the car open, but you will likely need a spare car key to get back on the road.

You may be able to change the battery in the fob, but there are cases where changing the battery does not fix the car key . If you contact a locksmith to help you get back inside once you locked your key fob inside the car, they can also make you a new key right then and there.

3. Damaged Lock

Several things can go wrong with your locks, resulting in a key fob locked in a car. These malfunctions include the car door getting stuck in the locked position , the car lock freezing , or you may just have a sticky car door lock . The severity of the problem will affect the solution.

The main thing to consider when a problem with the lock has resulted in a key fob locked in a car is that it may be possible to open a different door. Your keyless proximity unlocking feature may be working, but the lock isn’t properly responding to the signal.

It may be possible to use a door lock lubricant to fix these issues and even get you back inside the vehicle. At a certain point, you may need to ignore the broken door lock, solve the lockout and figure out how to fix your car door lock later.

4. Accidental Override

A key fob locked in a car can be a feature and not a bug. If you are going to be in an environment where the fob could be damaged by water, dirt, sand, etc., you may wish to leave the electronic portion of the key in the car. But the feature that allows this can lead to a lockout.

The specific way you override the car fob’s keyless proximity unlocking varies between vehicles. There will usually be a physical key blade, which you need to turn in the car door lock cylinder . But if you lose this key, break it, or something else goes wrong, you will be locked out.

So your key fob is locked in the car. Don’t worry! There is a solution you can use regardless of why this is happening to you. Even when your car remote is not working , there are some techniques and things you can do to at least gain access to your vehicle.

1. Reel In The Key

With a key fob locked in the car, you should be able to slip a long and thin tool into the vehicle and grab the key. With the key hooked or grabbed, drag the fob closer to the closest door. Each time you move the key a few inches, check to see if the door will open.

What tools can you use to pull your key towards the door, trunk, etc.? A wire coat hanger or similar long and shapeable length of material is perfect for catching the key. If you cannot slip your tool through a gap, you can widen the door gap with a wedge (like a doorstop).

As long as you are not contending with a broken car key fob or you have not unknowingly overridden the proximity unlock feature, this is an option. Just be sure not to scratch up the interior of your car while reaching around in it, and do not wedge open doors for extended periods.

2. Lock Manipulation

The term “lock manipulation” refers to the process of moving the lock switches and buttons in the interior of the vehicle. There are many ways to open a locked car with the keys inside , but which method you choose depends on the tools you access to and your abilities.

The best tools to open a locked car are a wedge and a long-reach tool. The wedge slides between the door and the frame to create a gap large enough to slide your long-reach tool through. The reach tool then pushes, pulls, or otherwise actuates the interior lock button.

Manipulation must be done when reeling in the key will not set off the proximity unlocking feature. It will not work if the car has deadlocked. Deadlock is a security protocol that keeps interior locks and all electronics dormant until the proper key is turned in the door lock cylinder.

3. Call A locksmith

For the most versatile and all-encompassing solution when a key fob is locked in a car, look for the best lockout service near you . You will need a service that specifically offers car locksmith services and specializes in car lockouts. It may even cost less than doing the work yourself.

The cost to unlock your car has to be weighed against the costs it is offsetting. A locksmith is going to make sure your vehicle is not damaged, the work will be done quickly (saving you time, which is money), and you can get all the services you need.

Costs can compound as you may need to add the key fob replacement cost to the equation. The more services you need beyond dealing with the key fob locked in the car, the greater the final price. But with a quality locksmith, the pricing will be fair and competitive.

Depending on why your key fob got locked in the car, you will be able to utilize certain solutions. The most important limiting factor is whether or not the key fob’s proximity unlocking feature is functioning. But even if it is not, there is still a way to get back into the vehicle.

Consider calling a locksmith, so your key fob locked in your car is fully resolved. See if United Locksmith can come to your location. And if you have any questions or would like to say something on the topic of a keyfob locked in the car, leave a comment below.

Key Fobs detected but not locking or unlocking

We have two journeys, one a 2012 and the other 2018. Two key fobs for each. Today all the key fobs stopped allowing us to lock, unlock, remote start, or panic. Both journeys still detect the key for passive entry and starting. I've replaced batteries, but that didn't fix it. Kind of at a loss as to why this happened. Any thoughts?

are you sure you put the batteries in correctly? so you are saying both journeys fob wont work? have no idea on that one

Yes batteries are in correctly.

and it happened the same time for both of your journeys fobs not to work?

Hi bvanhooser, I have just ran into the same issue on my 2015 journey... The 2 Key fobs are decteted and still start vehicle and proximity unlock/lock at the door handle, but no buttons function!  Just out of the blue, worked fine untill I tried just now. Fobs were not dropped or damaged, literally worked hours ago.

Batteries in both fobs putting out 3V, no issues with fobs previously. Checked all doors, closed and lock/unlock properly.  Starts normaly, car battery is plenty good.

Did you ever solve this problem? Any help much appreciated!

as most one time posters they never reported back on their solution to the problem, i would assume their problem would be different then yours. have you checked out youtube for any solutions?sounds like your journey is not rec the signals from your fobs,,,did you put in new batteries or just checked them for their strength i would replace them first before doing anything else. please report back on whatever you find to be the problem for others

Problem never really was resolved. Key fobs still don't work at home sometimes, but they do occasionally work when out and about. No real rhyme or reason to when they work. My wife's key fob will actually work sometimes and mine won't, and we're both at the car. Wish I had an answer for you...

ALL 4 quit working for both? Well lets say ONE FOB works "sometimes.

I don't have so new a year as an 2018, but I do know that if you have a Check Engine Light on when in use, the computer will NOT allow remote start to function till the fault is fixed.

Is this the only fault with both cars? Does the FOB lock/unlock the doors of both cars?

Your messaging is rather vague, we need specific as to which car and what is not working.

8. Faulty receiver module

Dodge Journey has a remote keyless system receiver that receives radio frequency signals from the key fob. If none of your key fobs work, and and you can’t reprogram the keys, it is possible the receiver module has developed a fault.

You may have to perform further diagnostics to identify the faulty. The keyless entry antenna could be damaged, or the module is just not communicating with other modules on the vehicle. In these cases an OBDII scan tool can be used to verify if the commands are being transmitted and acted on by the security module...................................

Reset the system

If the key fob is not working due to a glitch in the keyless entry system, it may be possible to restore the functionality by resetting the keyless entry system in your Journey.

disconnect-battery.jpg

There isn’t any button or option to reset the keyless entry system in Journey, but you can reboot all the on-board computers by disconnecting the 12 volt battery for a few minutes. Remove the cable from the negative terminal of the battery first, then from the positive terminal. With the battery disconnected, press the horn button a few times and turn on the headlights to drain out all the residual electricity from the system. After about 15 minutes, reconnect the battery in reverse order: positive cable first, then negative cable.

Oops, my post notifications were going to spam... Thanks for the replies guys! I also found a few recommendations to try rebooting the computers but was not looking forward to digging out the damn battery.  I ended up just trying to clean all contacts in the fobs with rubbing alcohol and putting and it still didn't work.  Waited a few hours after I made the post and pushed the lock button from my kitchen and it worked! No idea what the glitch was but it's never happened again, everything has worked as it should since.

Sorry I can't provide a fix or any help to anyone else with this issue, I honestly didn't do anything  to fix it.

This may sound strange but has been known to boost key fob signals by placing the key fob against your temple then push the button.

Dodge Journey Key Not Detected: Causes & Fixes

Dodge Journey Key Not Detected

The “Key Not Detected” on your Dodge Journey is a warning sign often associated with issues with the key fob. It will normally pop up when the driver attempts to switch on the vehicle, and the computer system cannot pick up a signal from the key fob.

The warning message will come if any factor disrupts the communication between the key fob and the ECM. Once the push-start button is pressed and the key’s signal is not detected, the vehicle will not come, and the error will come up. Many factors could stop the vehicle from picking up signals from the key fob. These factors include dead key battery, damaged receiver module, dead car battery, and more.

We will examine what a “Key Not Detected” means in a Dodge Journey. Also, explore the causes of this issue and how it could be fixed.

Meaning of Dodge Journey Key Not Detected

A Dodge Journey “Key Not Detected” is a warning message showing that the vehicle cannot communicate with the key fob, especially when you try to start the car.

What is a key fob? If you are unfamiliar with the term, it is a device that opens and unlocks the vehicle. Its most important function is its ability to start the car through the push-to-start function.

The Push-to-start function in the Dodge Journey uses low-frequency communication. Once the start button is pressed, the engine computer picks up a signal from the key fob, which should be in the car at the time.

Once the computer picks up the signal, the ECM sends power to the engine for ignition.

Sometimes, the computer system does not pick up any signal from the key fob. Check the key fob and ensure it is in the vehicle; if it is, there is an issue with the device.

Without the ECM picking up signals from the key fob, the engine will not start.

Causes of Dodge Journey Key Not Detected

Many factors could cause a “Key Not Detected” warning message on your Dodge Journey dashboard. In most cases, it is an issue with the key fob. However, other issues could be responsible for the warning message, like damaged receiver modules.

Below are some of the major causes of “key Not Detected.”

Dead key fob battery

A major cause of the warning message “key Not Detected” is a dead battery. The Key fob uses a small button-like battery that powers it; unfortunately, it is not designed to last forever.

The key fob battery will weaken and must be replaced at a certain point. You will notice the need to change the battery when the range of the key reduces. Now, you must draw closer to the car to open or close the door or press the button multiple times.

You could also get a notification of the low battery on the dashboard of your Dodge Journey.

Receiver module issues or interference

Another cause of the “key Not Detected” warning message is when the receiver module is not working as it should.

What is the receiver module? A device inside the vehicle receives signals from the key fob. It then sends signals to other components depending on whether to open or lock the door or trunk and start the engine.

Sometimes, the signal from the key fob may be interfered with by other radio waves that do not allow the module to pick up the right signals. In other cases, the module might be damaged and unable to pick up any frequency.

Water damage to the key fob

If you expose your key fob to water, it could cause serious damage. You need to understand that the key is an electrical device, and it is not designed to be waterproof and will get damaged if exposed to a certain amount of water.

Dead vehicle battery

A dead Dodge Journey battery will stop the receiver module from picking up the key fob signal. The module receives power from the battery to function. Once there is no power flowing to the module, it will not work.

Until the battery is charged, you cannot access and switch on the vehicle using the keyfob.

Worn-out key fob

The key fob will get worn out after long usage due to exposure to dirt, moisture, and other working conditions.

You will notice that the key fob is worn when the buttons are harder to press, and it takes longer for the vehicle to respond to the key’s command.

Also, the battery contact may become worn out, loose, or corroded due to oxidation, vibration, and other factors. This will have the same effect as having a dead battery.

How to fix Dodge Journey Key Not Detected

Once you realize the Dodge Journey “Key Not Detected” warning message, you need first to figure out what the cause of the problem is. You can do this by inspecting all the vehicle components that could be the source of the issue.

Below are ways to fix a Dodge Journey “Key Not Detected.”

Replace the key fob battery

When the battery of your Dodge Journey key fob is dead, you need to replace it immediately. To do this, follow the steps below.

  • Find the small notch at the side of the key fob and insert a screwdriver or any other tool that can fit in.
  • Slowly pry open the case and separate it into two.
  • Find buttons like batteries and take note of how they were placed.
  • Insert the new batteries the same way the old ones were placed.
  • Snap the separated key fob back together and test the key.

Replace key fob

In case of water damage or extreme wear conditions, you may need a new key fob compatible with your vehicle. You can get this in an authorized Dodge dealership.

Charge or replace car battery

If you are faced with a dead battery car battery, the easy fix is to charge the battery. Sometimes, the issue might not be a dead battery; it could be that the terminals are corroded. In this case, you may need to have them clean. Make a baking soda and water mixture, using the mixture and a rag to clean the battery.

Fix module issue

To fix the receiver module, you need first to locate it. The module is under that dashboard, just behind the glove box. Once located, check the connections, wiring antenna, and other components.

Go ahead and replace damaged parts of the module if you can. A professional should do issues like software malfunction.

Final Thought!

If you are faced with a “Key Not Detected”, it is important that you have the issue solved fast before the key fob becomes completely nonfunctional. Fortunately, problems with the key fob can easily be fixed, and you may not require professional help. Also, it will not cost much to have the issue fixed, even if you have to replace the key.

Dodge Journey key fob won’t lock or unlock the doors

Dodge Journey is equipped with remote keyless entry system that allows the owners to conveniently lock and unlock the vehicle with the press of a button on the key fob. There are many reasons why the remote control of your Journey may not be working which we will discuss in this article.

Dodge Journey

The most common cause of key fob not locking or unlocking the doors in Dodge Journey is dead coin battery inside the key fob. But the remote control can also stop working due to worn buttons, poor battery contact, water damage, receiver module issues, signal interference, dead 12 volt battery, unpaired key requiring reprogramming, or defective electronic chip.

1. Dead coin battery inside key fob

Dead coin battery is the leading cause of key fob not locking or unlocking the doors in Journey. Usually there are signs of weakening battery before it gives up. If the remote was working previously, but the range of the remote was gradually decreasing until it ceased to function, this indicates that the battery was wearing out.

Replace the battery

If the button cell battery in the key fob of Journey is replaced incorrectly or a battery is unsuitable, it can damage the vehicle key. Only replace drained batteries with new batteries in the same voltage, size, and specification. Make sure the battery is facing in the right direction when inserting it.

Key fob not working after replacing the battery

When purchasing a new battery for the key fob of your Journey, keep in mind that the battery may be sitting on the shelf for a long time. Therefore after replacement it may not work, or may not last that long. Try purchasing the battery from a store where stock moves fast. If you still can’t get the key fob to work after verifying that the battery is healthy, your key fob issues may not be due to bad battery.

dodge journey key locked inside

How long does the key fob battery last?

Depending on how often you use the key fob or remote control of your Journey, the battery should last between two and four years. This is assuming the new battery you installed is healthy and its use by date is many years away.

Tip: You can try to lock/unlock your Journey with its spare key. It will rule out any other problem with the first key, for example, water damage.

2. Poor battery connection

The battery inside the key fob of Journey has metal retaining clips that hold the battery in position and completes the circuit. If the clips don’t have any tension, it can cause contact issues and the remote may not receive any power. Make sure the battery is firmly placed and does not move around when you shake the remote. Also make sure all the battery contacts are corrosion and dust free.

3. Water damage

If your Dodge Journey key fob has taken a bath in the soapy water of the washing machine after you forgot to take it out of your pants pocket, water damage is very likely.

Water resistant, not waterproof

Your Journey key has rubber seals which prevents the water from getting to the electronic chip inside. A splash of water or brief exposure to light rain should be fine, but exposure to excessive amount of water like submerging the key in the pool can cause the water to penetrate the seals and damage the chip. Submerging the key in ocean water at the beach can be much more damaging to key fob electronics due to highly conductive nature of salt water.

But my key fob survived water exposure?

If your Journey key fob survived a wash cycle, or a deep bath in the ocean or pool water, it doesn’t make the key fob waterproof, it means you got lucky. Exposure to excessive water increases the risk of water damage, so you shouldn’t make this a habit.

What to do in case of water damage?

If your Journey key fob stopping working after exposure to clean tap water or rain, immediately remove the battery and clean the electronic component with paper towel and let it dry fully before putting back the battery. In case of exposure to salt water, or soapy or dirty water, it is recommended to clean the chip with isopropyl alcohol or electronic cleaner. If the key fob still doesn’t work after cleaning and drying, the chip is probably fried and you will have to buy a new key.

4. Dead 12 volt battery

The remote keyless system and the central locking system in Journey require the 12 volt battery to be in healthy state to function properly. If the 12 volt battery is dead or if the electric current has been interrupted due to corrosion on the battery terminals or the ground connection, all on-board electronics will stop working.

dodge journey key locked inside

In this case, you will have to manually unlock the door of your Journey with physical key. Also, the electrical accessories (e.g. headlights, fan, and infotainment system) will not function or may function poorly, and the engine will not start. Check the 12v battery and its connections.

5. Signal interference

Journey remote control signal can be disrupted by objects, poor weather conditions or transmitters on the same frequency band close to the vehicle. The remote key may work when you’re near the vehicle, but may not work from a distance. In case of severe interference, the remote may not work at all.

dodge journey key locked inside

Interference signals can be caused not only by neighboring radio masts and towers, but also by unprofessionally installed satellite systems. A large part of the radio interference is caused by defects and aging effects in electrical devices and radio systems, which lead to unwanted emissions, radiation and repercussions on power and communication networks. Your Journey key fob should start working again when you leave the area of interference.

6. Reprogramming required

In rare cases, the remote key of Journey may stop working due to pairing issues. The key can be reprogrammed with an OBDII scanner. You may also be able to program a key by following a few steps, an original key is typically required for successful pairing. The instructions should be mentioned in the owners manual. If you fail to do it yourself, you may have to visit an authorized dealer for reprogramming of the key.

7. Defective key fob

If your Journey key fob stopped working after you dropped it on the floor, you may have damaged the internal chip. Or, if your key fob just stopped working one day out of the blue, in rare cases this could indicate a faulty key fob – assuming you have tried everything to fix the issue e.g. battery replacement, reprogramming and the spare key fob works.

In these cases an OBDII scan tool can be used to verify if the commands are being transmitted and acted on by the security module.

Reset the system

If the key fob is not working due to a glitch in the keyless entry system, it may be possible to restore the functionality by resetting the keyless entry system in your Journey.

dodge journey key locked inside

There isn’t any button or option to reset the keyless entry system in Journey, but you can reboot all the on-board computers by disconnecting the 12 volt battery for a few minutes. Remove the cable from the negative terminal of the battery first, then from the positive terminal. With the battery disconnected, press the horn button a few times and turn on the headlights to drain out all the residual electricity from the system. After about 15 minutes, reconnect the battery in reverse order: positive cable first, then negative cable.

Use OBD2 scanner for diagnosis

Since Dodge Journey is equipped with on-board diagnostics (OBD), a fault diagnosis can provide initial indications of where the malfunction is located. This method will be especially useful when diagnosing a faulty remote keyless system receiver module.

To begin troubleshooting, you must first connect the diagnostic tool to your Journey. The OBDII connector is usually located under the dashboard. With the tool connected, turn on the ignition. Most diagnostic devices then ask for some information about the vehicle. It is important that you enter this 100% correctly, otherwise the result of the search may be inaccurate. In addition to the vehicle make, model, and engine type, you usually also have to type in the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Since some OBD codes are manufacturer-specific, the scanner will be able to give you more accurate information if you enter more details about your Journey.

Conclusion:

There are many reasons why your Dodge Journey key fob is not locking or unlocking the doors. When looking for the reason, you should start with the most obvious cause that is easy to diagnose: dead coin battery, which you can replace in a few minutes.

Unlock the Mystery: Where is the Key Hole in a Dodge Journey?

If you are a proud owner of a Dodge Journey or planning to purchase one, you might have wondered where the keyhole is located. The keyhole is an essential component to unlock and start the vehicle. In this article, we will explore the location of the keyhole in a Dodge Journey and provide you with the necessary information.

External Key Hole Locations

The Dodge Journey features two different external key hole locations, depending on the model year. Let’s take a closer look at each location:

1. Pre-2011 Dodge Journey Models

If you own a Dodge Journey model manufactured before 2011, you will find the external key hole on the driver’s side front door handle. It is a traditional key hole and is conveniently placed for easy access. To unlock or lock the vehicle, simply insert your key and turn it clockwise or counterclockwise accordingly.

2. 2011 And Newer Dodge Journey Models

From 2011 onwards, Dodge Journey models underwent a design change, and the key hole was repositioned for enhanced security. In these models, the key hole is located on the rear liftgate handle. To access the key hole, you need to lift the liftgate and look for the keyhole embedded beneath the handle. Insert your key and turn it to unlock or lock the vehicle.

Using the Key Hole

Now that you know where the key hole is located in your Dodge Journey, let’s discuss how to use it effectively:

1. Unlocking And Locking

Insert your key into the key hole and turn it clockwise to unlock the vehicle or counterclockwise to lock it. Ensure that you fully turn the key to ensure a secure locking or unlocking mechanism.

2. Starting The Vehicle

For older Dodge Journey models (pre-2011), you will need to insert your key into the ignition switch after unlocking the vehicle. Turn the key clockwise to start the engine and enjoy your journey.

However, for newer Dodge Journey models (2011 and newer), the key fob system is integrated, allowing you to start the vehicle without physically inserting the key into the ignition. Simply press the start/stop button located on the dashboard while the key fob is in your possession (e.g., in your pocket or bag). This feature provides added convenience and ease of use.

HELP!! My keys are locked in the car, and its running!

RoostKing

  • Add to quote

Im visiting family and wanted to warm up the car, so I started it, left the FOB in the car. I had no idea the car doors would lock!!!!!!! The car is CURRENTLY running in the driveway. Suggestions?? I can open the trunk, but cant get the back seats down. HELP!

texcowboy

How are you opening the trunk ?

JS1977

Try unlocking the door, open the trunk, call the dealership. I know you've probably already tried this stuff, just making sure you check everything. My trunk won't shut if I accidentally put the keys in a bag and try and throw it in the trunk so I'm not sure why your car locked you out.

Yea, Im not sure why the doors locked either, unless I did it by accident on the way out. I called a lock smith so they hopefully can do something without effing up the door/trim/whatever. That is what I dont understand, why i can get in the trunk still.

OutlawRT

just a random thought.. but maybe disconnecting the battery will shut off the car and reset it when you re-attach the battery and maybe open the doors? Just a shot in the dark though. Lol Shifty

MADNUSA

D'OH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I might do the battery part, but I dont want to set the alarm off when I reconnect it. Hmm

G30Jack

Car will run off the alternator.

MuscleCarProf

If the keys are inside, are they close enough for your to open the door keyless? You know, depress the the little button on the handle while lifting it as if it were in your pocket?

Car is unlocked using a lock smith. Im guessing I hit the lock button on the arm rest of the way out of the car, with now fob on me! That wont happen again!

Hal H

I wonder if your fob battery was getting weak and the car can't detect it? Otherwise, the Keyless Go doesn't allow you to lock the keys in the car (the earlier '08 -'10 cars with Keyless-Go are like this as well). Probably a good idea to change the battery to avoid this later on. A way to test this (have window down): *leave fob inside car (ignition can be off) *push inside door lock button and shut the door w/o touching the handle The horn should beep 3 times quickly and the door lock pin will pop up. That's the alert you left your fob inside the vehicle. (on the '11+ cars, if you tried to lock the fob in the trunk, the latch will automatically unlock).

deranged

Well I learned something new today. These cars will lock with the fob in the car and while running no less! Did this when I was 16 yo. Burned out 1/4 tank of gas before my mom got the spare key to me. Of course gas was maybe .60 cents a gallon back then, a small fortune was lost at the time! Sorry you learned me a lesson!

Especially the ones w/o the Electronic Convenience Grp (optional on '09-'10 R/T, std. on SRT) if yours wasn't equipped with push-button start, it doesn't have the systems that detect the fob . The quick tell-tale is the pre '11 cars that don't have steering wheel buttons - if you don't have them, your car doesn't have Elect. Conv. Grp or push-button start (Keyless Go).

Use a clothes hanger and slide inside the window and use a little pressure and pull the lock up. I can get in mine in 20 seconds. I did the same thing but mine wasn't running .

HK-Pro

Can't you crawl inside the car from the trunk?

The seatback latches/ pull straps are in the pass. compartment. Can't get the seatbacks folded down (latches released) from the trunk side.

dun4791

Is the fuel pump relay in the trunk? Yank that one out. I would start pulling them all until it died.

Trimec

My advice is never take the fob off your person from now on, you just never know with computers and electronics their just to unpredictable to trust

Glad to hear you got it unlocked with the locksmith. For all who are surprised that this happened keep in mind the car was running and the key fob was on the inside, it's just as if he was sitting in the car about to drive, you can lock your doors, and no one would be able to open your locked door/trunk from the outside. I think everyone is thinking of when you Auto-start your car and not when your car is actually running because of the ignition being turned/pushed.

Good info here and a hidden key will be in the works for sure. I am beginning to think I probably locked the doors myself, as I was exiting the vehicle. I usually do this when leqving the car, but of course I have my fob on me. Since this car is still fairly new to me, I am not surprised, as I did this same thing with my new Ford Ranger in 2001, running and everything. I think I will change fob battery anyways, it is over three years old.

The magnetic key holders will fall off in no time. Been there, done that. Place spare key behind license plate in rear and secure the plate w/ standard screws. Make sure a dime will fit the screws. I know, I know, all of your change is in a pile in the console or something and your pockets are empty! Someone ANYONE will have a damn dime! :icon_cool:

You need one with a better magnet then and maybe a different hiding spot!

I have 3 keys, Lost one my first day of work on base while out on the range... searched ALL OVER for it, inside and outside our work truck. Turns out 2 months later my friend found it under the seat wedged between spill kits.. I normally just keep one in my coat pocket (buttoned up) and switch it from jacket to jacket. then 2 at my place... Never need to take the key out of my coat with the keyless go system. Shifty

Dodge Journey: Key Stuck in Ignition → Diagnosis

dodge journey key locked inside

There are a few easy to fix reasons why your Dodge Journey’s key might get stuck in the ignition.  It’s often easy to unstick the key.  Whatever you do, don’t start trying to rip it out of the ignition.  That can cause bigger problems.

This article is written with the assumption that your key is stuck right now and that you are looking to get it out.

Dodge Journey Key Stuck in Ignition

There might be several factors contributing to your key getting stuck, including the ignition lock itself, a worn-out key, or even a misaligned transmission.

By diagnosing the root cause, you can determine the most effective way to address the issue and prevent it from recurring. In addition, knowing when to call a professional for assistance will save you time and effort, ensuring your vehicle remains secure and functional.

Key Takeaways

  • Understand the common reasons behind a stuck key in your Dodge Journey’s ignition
  • Learn practical solutions and preventive measures to avoid this issue in the future
  • Know when to seek professional help for a stuck key to ensure your vehicle’s security

Causes of a Stuck Key

Key Stuck in Ignition Causes

One common cause of a stuck key in the Dodge Journey is the key wearing out over time.

The teeth on the key may become worn, causing the key to lose its proper alignment inside the ignition cylinder. Also, the key can bend, which will cause it to bind in the cylinder.

Excessive usage or rough handling can weaken the key, increasing the likelihood of it getting stuck. Inspect your key for signs of wear and consider replacing it if necessary.

Damaged Ignition Cylinder

dodge journey key locked inside

Another possible cause is a damaged ignition cylinder. The ignition cylinder is a component that facilitates the engagement and disengagement of the vehicle’s engine.

If your Journey’s key is difficult to insert or remove, or if you struggle to turn the key, it may be a sign that the ignition cylinder is damaged. In such cases, seek the assistance of a professional mechanic to diagnose and repair the issue.

Steering Wheel Lock

Lastly, the steering wheel lock is a safety feature designed to prevent the vehicle from being moved without the key.

When the steering wheel is locked, it might apply pressure on the ignition cylinder, making it difficult to release the key. If you encounter this issue, try gently turning the steering wheel from side to side while attempting to remove the key.

This process should ease the tension on the ignition cylinder and allow the key to be released.

Solutions to Remove a Stuck Key

Jiggling the key.

dodge journey key locked inside

Sometimes, a simple solution to a stuck key is gently jiggling it. Apply slight pressure to the key while carefully moving it back and forth in the ignition. Be cautious not to forcefully twist or bend the key, as this can cause it to break.

Adjusting the Steering Wheel

Your Dodge Journey may be equipped with a steering lock system. In some cases, a misaligned steering wheel can bind the ignition switch, causing the key to be stuck. Follow these steps to unlock your steering wheel:

  • Apply light pressure to the key : While keeping light pressure on the key in the ignition (as if you’re trying to turn it), simultaneously…
  • Move the steering wheel : Gently turn the steering wheel left and right until you find a point where it unlocks and frees the key.

It may require a few attempts, but this process can often solve the issue with the stuck key.

Key Extraction Tools

If the previous methods don’t work, you may need to resort to using key extraction tools. These specialized tools are designed to safely remove a key without causing damage to your ignition. Some popular key extraction tools include:

  • Broken key extractors : These tools are specifically designed to grip and remove broken or stuck keys. They usually have a narrow, hooked tip that can be inserted alongside the key, allowing you to pull it out.
  • Pliers : While not specifically designed for this purpose, needle-nose pliers can sometimes be used to grip and carefully remove a stuck key. Be cautious not to apply too much force, as it could cause further damage to the ignition.

Seek the help of a professional locksmith if you’re unfamiliar with using key extraction tools.

Preventive Measures

To avoid your Dodge Journey key getting stuck in the ignition, taking certain preventive measures is important. In this section, we will discuss the following sub-sections: Regular Key Inspection, Proper Key Usage, and Lubrication.

Regular Key Inspection

Inspect your key regularly to detect any signs of wear, bending, or other deformities. If you notice any issues, it’s time to replace the key. Using a damaged key can lead to it becoming stuck in the ignition, or, in worst-case scenarios, breaking off inside the ignition.

Proper Key Usage

To prevent your key from getting stuck, be gentle while inserting and turning the key in the ignition. Avoid applying excessive force when turning the key, as this can cause damage to the ignition cylinder and lead to issues such as the key getting stuck.

Furthermore, be mindful of any debris or foreign objects in the keyhole. If you notice anything obstructing the keyhole, carefully remove the obstruction before inserting your key.

Lubrication

Lubricating the ignition lock cylinder can help keep the key from getting stuck. It is recommended to use a graphite-based lubricant designed specifically for locks.

Apply a small amount of lubricant to your key, insert it into the ignition lock cylinder, and turn it a few times to ensure even distribution. This will help maintain the smooth operation of the ignition system and prevent the key from getting stuck.

Remember to apply the lubricant sparingly and avoid using oil-based or sticky lubricants, as they can attract dirt and cause more issues in the long run.

When to Call a Professional

dodge journey key locked inside

In some cases, when your Dodge Journey key is stuck in the ignition, it can be resolved with simple troubleshooting. However, there are situations where professional assistance might be necessary. Here are a few scenarios when you should consider calling a professional:

  • Worn-out key: If your key is no longer effectively engaging the ignition lock, it might be time to replace it. A professional locksmith can create a new key that fits properly, ensuring smooth operation in the future.
  • Faulty ignition lock cylinder: If the issue persists despite having a new or well-maintained key, the problem might lie within the ignition lock cylinder. A skilled locksmith or mechanic can assess the situation and determine if the cylinder needs to be replaced.
  • Damaged or misaligned steering column: If the steering column or related components have been damaged or misaligned, this can make it difficult to remove the key. In this case, an experienced mechanic would be best suited to diagnose and address the issue.
  • Electrical issues: Modern cars, including the Dodge Journey, have complex electrical systems that could contribute to the problem. If you suspect an electrical issue, such as a malfunctioning key interlock solenoid, it’s best to consult a qualified technician. They can perform necessary diagnostics and repairs to get your vehicle back in working order.

In any of these instances, it’s essential to prioritize safety and avoid attempting repairs beyond your expertise. Hiring a professional can save you time, effort, and potential further damage to your vehicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can i remove a stuck key from the ignition in my dodge journey.

First, try to gently turn the steering wheel left and right while attempting to turn the key, as the steering lock might be engaged. If this doesn’t work, ensure that the gear selector is in the Park position. Sometimes, jiggling the key while turning the steering wheel can help as well.

What are the reasons for a key not coming out of the ignition?

Some common reasons for a key getting stuck include a locked steering wheel, the gear selector not being in Park, a worn-out key, a problem with the release button, a bad ignition lock, or a low battery.

How can I fix a key stuck in the ACC position?

Ensure your vehicle is in Park and try turning the key while applying pressure on the brake pedal. If the key remains stuck, try disconnecting the battery for a few minutes and reconnecting it. This might reset the system and allow the key to return to the off position.

What should I do if my key won’t turn in the ignition switch?

First, make sure your vehicle is in Park and that the steering wheel is not locked. If the key still doesn’t turn, try using a spare key, as the original might be worn-out or bent. If the problem persists, you might need to consult a mechanic or replace the ignition switch.

2. General information about Moscow metro

Metro working hours, navigation, wi-fi.

The Moscow Metro is open from about 5:30 am until 1:00 am. The precise opening time varies at different stations according to the arrival of the first train, but all stations simultaneously close their entrances and transitions to other lines at 01:00 am for maintenance. The minimum interval between trains is 90 seconds during the morning and evening rush hours. Each line is identified according to an alphanumeric index (usually consisting of a number), a name and a color. Voice announcements in Russian refer to the lines by name and by numbers in English. A male voice announces the next station when traveling towards the center of the city or the clockwise direction on the circle line, and a female voice – when going away from the center or the counter-clockwise direction at the circle. The lines are also assigned specific colors for maps and signs.

Free Wi-Fi is called MT_FREE and available on all 14 lines (inside the trains).

Using Metro services is frequently the fastest and the most efficient way to get from one part of the city to another. But during daytime Moscow Metro stations are usually overcrowded so if you want to just enjoy the beauty of the underground, it’s better to visit it late in the evening.

MCC and MCD

Since 2016 The Moscow Metro is connected to two new types of rail transport. The first one is MCC – Moscow Central Circle. It has 31 stations around the city with changes to metro stations (most of them require to walk a few minutes via the street). The second one is MCD, Moscow Central Diameters, a system of city train services on existing commuter rail lines in Moscow and Moscow Oblast. MCD has several lines, they’re being marked as D1, D2 etc. Changing to both MCC and MCD from the Metro is free when your journey is within the city. Both MCC and MCD lines exist on all of the Moscow Metro maps.

Interesting facts about Moscow metro

213 people were born in the metro during the World War II, when it was used as a bomb shelter.

There are 76 bronze sculptures of workers, peasants, soldiers, sailors, etc. at Ploshchad Revolyutsii station. There is legend connected with this station. To pass any examination successfully, a student should touch the bronze dog’s nose («the Frontier Guard with a Dog» sculpture). You can easily understand high popularity of this legend by looking at the polished nose of the dog.

It is said that some of the magnificent mosaics at several central stations, for example the «World Peace» mosaic at Novoslobodskaya, were made with the pieces of enamel and smalt, taken from the famous Christ the Savior Cathedral, before it’s destruction.

As any other dungeon the Moscow metro, has its own ghosts. The most famous one is the old lineman. He is not dangerous and usually hides into the wall, when people appear. The ghostly metro train is much more dangerous. It appears after midnight at the Circle Line and consists of old-time carriages. It sometimes stops at the stations and opens its doors, and then goes back into the darkness. It is said that the souls of Stalin’s prisoners, perished during the building of the metro are locked in the train forever.

3. Moscow Metro tickets

1 or 2 trips.

You can buy tickets in ticket offices or in automatic ticket machines. Passes for 1 or 2 trips are the most expensive. They sold only in ATM and cost 55 and 110 rubles (€0.55 and €1.10) respectively.

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .
