Trek Precaliber 16

Trek Precaliber 16

Teaching and learning to ride is a breeze with Precaliber 16. It has a handle built into the saddle so you can guide while they ride, and tool-free training wheels that are super easy to install and remove. It's a great fit for kids ages 4-5 between 39-46-inches tall. It's right for you if... It's finally time to teach your little one to ride! You want to make it a great memory, so you're looking for a bike that's comfortable, durable, and fun. Simplicity is key, and you want to be able to pop off the training wheels easily when the time is right. The tech you get This kid-friendly bike has a handle integrated right into the saddle so you can help guide your child while they ride, plus a coaster brake and tool-less training wheels that can be installed and removed at the turn of a dial. Plus, the lightweight aluminum frame is easy to maneuver. The final word You want to make sure your child's first bike is comfortable, durable, and fun. Each of our bikes, all the way down to the smallest size, is built to our highest standards, so you can feel confident when you choose Trek for your family. Why you'll love it - This bike is a memory-maker: seeing your child ride their bike for the first time is something you'll never forget - This bike is hand-me-down heaven: it's built to last, so younger siblings can inherit this bike and it'll still feel like new - You shouldn't buy your kid's bike where you buy your cereal—Unlike big box brands, Trek kids' bikes are assembled by people who know bikes - You can replace the saddle's integrated handle with an integrated light mount when your child starts adventuring on their own - Like all Precaliber bikes, the frame is lower so it's easier for kids to stand over and hop on and off

Two Wheeling Tots

The Best 16 Inch Bikes for 4 and 5-Year-Olds

child riding woom 3 16 inch green bike down a ramp

When it comes to 16-inch bikes, they’re often a child’s first taste of true independent riding, making the perfect fit essential for both comfort and safety . But with such a wide range of sizes among bikes, it can be tricky to nail down the perfect one without a bit of guidance.

Why trust us? Over the last decade, we’ve tested over forty 16 inch pedal bikes with dozens of kids! Through hands-on experience, we’ve mastered the art of fitting your child to a bike (hint: it’s not just about wheel size!) and discovered which bike brands cater best to different types of riders.

While our top picks all have 16 inch wheels, check out our mini reviews below for a closer look at their actual size. Aim for a minimum seat height 0-2″ greater than your child’s inseam for the ideal fit. Check our kids bike sizes guide for further details.

Best 16 Inch Bikes for Kids

Video summary.

Wondering what all of our favorite bikes look like in action? Check out our video summary below to watch our kid bike riders put them to the test.

BUDGET FRIENDLY 16 INCH BIKES

What We Look for in a Budget-Friendly Bike While these bikes are not as high-end or as lightweight as the bikes that take our top recommendations, they all perform impressively for their price tag. They also feature good basic geometry with properly placed handlebars (not too high, not too low), a reasonable weight (under 21 lb.), and a durable build.

Guardian Bikes 16

  • FULL REVIEW :  Guardian Bikes 16

While Guardian bikes boast lightweight frames and a kid-specific design for a good price, what really makes Guardian stand out is their proprietary braking system called SureStop.

Designed to prevent unsafe braking, SureStop has only one brake lever that sequentially engages the rear and front brakes. Not only it is the safest system on the market, but it’s also much easier to use than most traditional dual-hand brakes.

When braking with just the front hand brake while at high speeds, bikes can tilt forward, bucking the child off the bike and over the handlebars. SureStop on Guardian bikes prevents this by having only one brake lever engage the front and rear brakes.

What this also means is that the Guardian 16 does not have a coaster brake (back pedal brake). This is the most affordable 16″ bike without a coaster brake. Why does this matter? Coaster brakes actually make it much harder for kids to learn to ride.

Retrospec Koda 2 16″

Bang for your buck quality and kid-friendly geometry

Girl riding 16" Retrospec Koda 2 Plus down the sidewalk

  • MSRP : $169 (Plus model), $139 (Non-plus model)
  • SEAT HEIGHT:  18.3″ – 23″
  • WEIGHT:  19.1 lb.
  • TRAINING WHEELS : Compatible and included
  • STANDOUT FEATURES : Kid-friendly geometry for a comfortable, natural ride, great fit over time
  • FULL REVIEW :  Retrospec Koda 2 Plus Kids Bikes Review

Affordable bikes are often low quality and poorly designed, creating a frustrating riding experience for your child. But the Retrospec Koda 2 (and Koda 2 Plus) is that rare gem of a kid’s bike that we are so excited to find. It’s super affordable, and also thoughtfully designed to be easy to ride! These types of bikes shouldn’t be rare gems, but unfortunately, they are.

While the Koda 2 16 bikes aren’t as fine-tuned or as lightweight as the more expensive budget bikes, their overall geometry and kid-friendly fit are pretty similar. If your budget is only under $150, we happily recommend these bikes.

What’s the difference between the Koda 2 16 and the Koda 2 Plus 16? A few things, but the biggest is that the Plus model has a hand brake. After extensive testing, we’ve found that the hand brake doesn’t offer much stopping power for little ones, so they will need to rely on the coaster brake.

As a result, if you can find a non-Plus model in stock in a color your kid will get excited about, you could save $30 and get essentially the same experience.

Raleigh Rowdy 16

Fun and aggressive little pony that won’t break the bank , for taller riders

boy riding a red raleigh rowdy 16

  • MSRP : $280
  • SEAT HEIGHT:  21.5″ – 26″
  • WEIGHT:  15.6 lb.
  • STANDOUT FEATURES : Great quality for the price, no coaster brake
  • FULL REVIEW :  Raleigh Rowdy 16

The Raleigh Rowdy’s low, flat handlebars and wide cushioning tires make this little pony a solid option for kids who will be adventuring off the beaten path. For its price, it’s impressively lightweight AND doesn’t have a coaster brake!

Compared to other bikes on this list, the Rowdy 16 is a bit larger. For example, the minimum seat height of the Rowdy is 21.5″, while the minimum seat height of the Prevelo Alpha Two is 17″. That’s a huge difference, and a good reminder that kids’ bikes are not one size fits all.

BEST FOR NEIGHBORHOOD RIDERS

What We Look for in a Neighborhood Bike Most kids on 16 inch bikes stick to riding around the neighborhood. Stable and lightweight, high-quality neighborhood bikes should also be be easy to ride, easy to balance, and perform consistently. Dual hand brakes and NO coaster brake are also a requirement to make our list.

Super lightweight, fine-tuned design for beginners

  • SEAT HEIGHT: 19.1″ – 25.2″
  • WEIGHT: 13.1 lb., or 14.6 lb. for Automagic

  • FULL REVIEW :  WOOM 3

The go-to bike for beginning riders. woom Bikes is a high-end, child-specific bike company that takes pride in designing bikes built specifically for children’s smaller frames. Smaller, lighter, and with a lower center-of-gravity than the average bike, the woom 3 is incredibly easy to balance and has a special brake system to help little newbies learn to properly use dual hand brakes for the first time.

Of all the bikes on this list, the woom 3 is the easiest bike to learn to ride on for true beginners. If you think your child will develop into a confident speed demon, the woom 3 AUTOMAGIC is offered with a 2-speed rear hub that automatically shifts a child into a higher gear when needed.

Prevelo Alpha Two

Lightweight bike for the smallest neighborhood riders

4 year old riding Prevelo Alpha Two bike in red

  • MSRP : $469
  • SEAT HEIGHT: 17″ – 25″
  • WEIGHT: 14.4 lb.
  • STANDOUT FEATURES : Frame hugger saddle allows for a super low minimum seat height
  • FULL REVIEW :  Prevelo Alpha 2

Engineered for kids with a lightweight frame and higher gearing, the Prevelo Alpha Two is a great option for kids who want to enjoy a long ride with the family.  With a 3.8 gain ratio, the rider gains considerable distance with each pedal stroke, making long rides easier for young riders.

But what really sets the Alpha Two apart is its super low minimum seat height of 17″. As the smallest 16″ bike that we know of, this Prevelo is uniquely sized to allow younger riders to reap the benefits of larger 16″ wheels at a younger age.

Priority Start 16

Low-maintenance, grease-free, quiet belt drive and sophisticated styling

Child giving a big thumbs up while riding his Priority Start 16

  • MSRP : $329
  • SEAT HEIGHT: 18.5″ – 23″
  • WEIGHT: 15.9 lb.
  • STANDOUT FEATURES : Packed with features for the price
  • FULL REVIEW :  Priority Start 16

Built with high-end components that provide durability and performance, the Priority 16 packs a lot of punch in its price tag.  Priority Bicycles got their start with Kickstarter and has grown into a well-respected, innovative bike brand.

A great first “real” kids bike with more sophisticated adult styling, the Start will have your child craving adventure on two wheels in no time. But what makes Priority Bicycles different from all the rest? The Gates carbon belt drive, which replaces a traditional bike chain.

Kids think the super quiet belt drive is ninja cool for stealth mode, and parents love that the belt drive requires basically no maintenance, and won’t get hands or pants greasy.

Offers most room for growth, super lightweight

Young girl riding the Biky 16 kids bike

  • MSRP : $399
  • SEAT HEIGHT:  17.5″ – 25″
  • WEIGHT:  12.5 lb.
  • STANDOUT FEATURES : Superlight weight, comfortable semi-upright body position
  • FULL REVIEW :  Biky 16

In addition to being one of the lightest 16″ bikes on the market, the Biky 16 also offers an impressive fit range. With a low minimum seat height of 17.5″ and a maximum height of 25″, the Biky stands out for its versatility, accommodating a wide range of riders.

The Biky’s mid-rise handlebars strike a perfect balance—they aren’t too high for the smallest riders, avoiding an awkward high-rise position; they aren’t too low for taller riders, ensuring comfort without forcing an overly aggressive posture. This makes them a perfect Goldilocks height.

One drawback of the Biky 16 is its single handbrake on the rear wheel. While our testers had no trouble safely stopping the bike, adventurous speed demons might prefer a bike equipped with dual-hand brakes for increased stopping power.

BIKES FOR ADVENTUROUS RIDERS

What We Look for in a Bike for Adventurous Riders Riders ready to hit the trails—whether paved or compact dirt—and tackle every ramp or curb will benefit from low-rise handlebars that place the body in a more forward-leaning position.

This allows riders to easily shift their weight to maintain balance on uneven surfaces, ramps, curbs, etc. Wider and knobbier tires, as well as dual-hand brakes and no coaster brake, also help little adventurers to maneuver safely through more technical terrain.

If you’re raising a little shredder and are looking for a dedicated 16 inch mountain bike, be sure to check out our favorite 16″ bikes for single track.

Versatile fit for everyone from timid to aggressive riders

Young boy riding 16" Pello Revo kids bike.

  • SEAT HEIGHT: 19″ – 24.5″
  • WEIGHT: 14.6 lb.
  • STANDOUT FEATURES : Lightweight build, adjustable handlebars, knobby tires, high-end components
  • FULL REVIEW :  Pello Revo

Whether your little one is timid to get started on a bike or is ready to charge full on into the world via two wheels, the Pello Revo is ready for action. With a lightweight build, quality brakes that stop on a dime, and handlebars that adjust to fine tune the fit, the Revo provides a comfortable, exciting, and nimble ride.

Built with a semi-upright geometry, the Revo positions the rider upright enough to help timid riders feel comfortable. With the ability to tilt the handlebars closer or farther away from the rider, the Revo can easily be customized to your rider’s preferred fit.

If your neighborhood rider decides to get aggressive and take their love of riding off-road, the Revo’s all-terrain tires are ready for the job! If they happen to fall in love with the dirt, the Revo is also compatible with up to 2.1″ wide tires (1.5″ is standard).

Early Rider Belter 16

Impeccable build with aggressive geo and a belt drive

young boy riding the 16 inch Early Rider Belter at a bike park

  • MSRP : $479
  • SEAT HEIGHT: 19.5″ – 23.5″
  • WEIGHT: 13.7 lb.
  • STANDOUT FEATURES : Super smooth, grease-free belt drive; amazing quality; aggressive geo
  • FULL REVIEW : Early Rider Belter 16

If the showstopping build and aesthetics of the Early Rider Belter don’t draw you in, its performance certainly will! Built with a grease-free belt drive instead of a traditional bike chain, the Belter rides exceptionally smoothly and, as an added perk, requires very little maintenance.

The Belter’s aggressive geometry makes it ideal for city riders eager to tackle every curb, ramp, or jump they encounter. The bike’s low-rise handlebar allows riders to easily lean into the bike and shift their weight when getting adventurous.

For a little extra cushioning through the city jungles, the Belter comes with 2.0″ wide tires with a smooth street tread. If dirt trails or single track are in your little rider’s future, the Early Rider Seeker 16 model offers the same build as the Belter but with knobby tires for better off-road performance.

However, due to the Belter’s lack of a chain guard (or belt guard), take caution to ensure your little rider isn’t wearing baggy clothes (such as pants, skirts, or dresses) while on the Belter – they could get caught in the belt. While we haven’t experienced this issue with the new Belter 16, it was a problem with their older model.

Cleary Hedgehog

Durable build, low gain ratio for hills

Young child riding Cleary Hedgehog 16 inch bike through park

  • MSRP : $340
  • SEAT HEIGHT: 17.5″ – 24.5″ (17.5″ min requires purchase of shorter seat post)
  • STANDOUT FEATURES : Lightweight yet sturdy steel frame, vegan leather saddle and matte paint job, optional rear cogs to change the gain ratio
  • FULL REVIEW :  Cleary Hedgehog

With a lightweight steel frame and impressive stability, the Hedgehog is the perfect ride for hitting the skatepark or cruising through the neighborhood. Responsive handbrakes and very low gearing make it ideal for more ambitious and/or uphill terrain.

On the flip side, the lower gearing makes this bike less ideal for long paved rides where higher gearing would allow a child to gain more distance with each pedal stroke.

With the purchase of an optional shorter seat post, the Hedgehog’s seat can be lowered to 17.5″, making it one of the smallest 16″ bikes on the market. The Cleary Owl , which is the 20-inch version of this bike, is sized like a larger 16 inch bike and is often a great fit for taller 4, 5 or 6-year-olds.

Over many years of testing Cleary Bikes, we’ve found them to be incredibly durable, making them a great option for families who want to pass bikes down to younger siblings.

OTHER 16 INCH BIKES TO CONSIDER

Not every bike we test can make our Top 10, but here are a few honorable mention bikes you should also consider. Some bikes below are normally on our Top 10 list, but are currently out of stock.

Schwinn Elm / Koen

Cute and sporty designs

4 year old child riding a red and purple 16 inch bike

  • MSRP : $189
  • SEAT HEIGHT:  20.5″ – 24.5″
  • WEIGHT:  20.6 lb.
  • STANDOUT FEATURES : Easy-to-ride, kid-specific design
  • FULL REVIEW :  Schwinn SmartStart Series

Available in multiple styles and from multiple retailers, Schwinn’s SmartStart Series collection of bikes (which includes the Elm 16 inch girls bike and Koen 16 inch boys bike) are a big step up from cheap big-box store bikes. Lighter than those bikes, the SmartStart Series also provides a better, child-specific geometry which allows for a more stable and comfortable ride for kids.

While the overall design is still a lower-quality, budget build, the price tag is much more affordable for many parents. The SmartStart Series does come with a handbrake, but it’s poorly made and riders will have to rely on the coaster brake to stop.

How to Choose the Best 16 inch Bike

While we have a much more detailed discussion about what makes a great bike in our best kids’ bikes buying guide , here’s a quick summary of the most important things to look for to find the perfect bike for your 4 or 5-year-old.

Size – 16 inch bikes vary widely

A 16 inch bike is generally the best fit to purchase for 4 and 5-year-olds. If your child is a very tall 5-year-old, a 20 inch bike should also be considered to allow for more room for growth.

Within the 16 inch wheel size, there is a very large range of seat heights . The smallest 16 inch bike we recommend has a 17″ minimum seat height, while another has a minimum seat height of 21.5″!  To allow for the most room for growth, find a bike that has a minimum seat height that comes as close as possible to your child’s ideal seat setting (which will vary based on inseam and whether or not this is your child’s first pedal bike).

If this bike is your child’s  first  pedal bike after a balance bike, the bike’s seat should be set at or just below their inseam measurement. This allows a child to sit on the seat and easily put their feet down to steady themselves or stop the bike. This is critical as they learn to pedal to instill confidence, and for maximum safety.

If your child has already mastered pedaling, you should set the bike’s seat about 2″ above the child’s inseam to allow for maximum efficiency while pedaling.

12 different 16 inch bikes lined up in a row. They vary in size.

Weight – Lightweight is key to gaining confidence

Ideally, your child’s bike shouldn’t weigh more than 30% of their body weight. In general, the lighter the bike, the easier and less tiring it will be for your child to ride.  Heavy bikes are really hard to manage for little ones who are still mastering the art of balancing and pedaling at the same time!

For example, can you imagine a 4-year-old trying to ride the Royal Baby 16″ bike which weighs 24 pounds compared to the woom 3 at 13.1 pounds?? Since kids are often starting off their pedal bike journey on a 16″ bike, when possible, we often encourage parents to step up their budget a bit in order to get their kids on a lighter weight bike. With a lightweight bike they can quickly become confident little pedalers. Once confident, they can often tackle a heavier, often lesser quality bike for their next bike.

Frame Design – It goes way beyond looks!

A bike’s frame design plays a major role in the overall feel and performance of a bike.  Some bikes put a child in an upright position that feels very natural for beginning riders and is great for neighborhood riding.

41 inch tall girl riding the woom 3 16 inch bike and the Prevelo Alpha Two 16 inch bike. She is much more leaned forward on the Prevelo.

Other bikes require a rider to lean forward to grip the handlebars, putting kids in a more aggressive position. These types of bikes are generally better for more experienced, adventurous riders who will be doing more aggressive riding.

Brakes – Try to avoid coaster brakes

Coaster brakes (back pedal brakes) are often found on 16 inch bikes, but they can inhibit a child’s ability to learn to pedal while balancing a bike.  Why?

When learning to pedal and balance on a bike, kids (like adults!) naturally pedal backward when attempting to regain their balance.  If the bike has a coaster brake, pedaling backward inadvertently activates the bike’s brake, which slows the bike and often leads to a crash. Without a coaster brake, pedaling backward to regain balance isn’t a problem.

5 year old engaging the handbrake of a 16 inch bike

As a result, we much prefer bikes without coaster brakes and with responsive hand brakes that are easy for small hands to operate.

Gearing – How fast will the bike go?

For kids ages 4, 5, and 6, gears are just too much to handle and bikes with gears and shifters are not available on 16 inch bikes. However, the gearing of a bike is still worth taking into consideration. In the biking world, the gain ratio relates to the gearing of a single-speed bike and is often used to determine how hard it is to pedal a bike.

High gain ratios (3.7+) are harder to get started pedaling but can more easily maintain higher speeds. Lower gain ratios (3.3 and below) are really easy to start pedaling but can’t reach high maximum speeds. Gain ratios in the middle do a little bit of both! For 16 inch bikes, we generally prefer mid-range gain ratios from about 3.5 to 3.8.

4 year old riding a pello revo 16 inch kids bike

Price – What does a more expensive bike get me?

Good bikes are not cheap. Every bike on this list is significantly better than a bike you’ll find at Walmart, but also costs more. Why? It’s not easy making a high-quality, lightweight bike! There is a reason some adults bikes cost more than a car.

In the end, after testing over 50 different 16 inch bikes, we can confidently say that higher-end bikes are MUCH easier for kids to ride than budget bikes found at big-box stores.

While any bike (well, any safe bike) is better than no bike, if you want your child to start their biking journey off with a smile versus tears and frustration, we highly recommend splurging on a nicer bike when possible. Higher-end bikes also typically have great resale values, with many re-selling for close to 70% of their MSRP.

Girls vs Boys Bikes

Is there really any difference between girls bike or boys bikes? Beyond color or design patterns, not really. There are a few cheaper girls bikes that have swooping frames, but in today’s world, all of the best kids bikes have identical frames and components for boys and girls.

All kids bike brands offer a range of colors from “girly” to “boyish” or gender neutral. You don’t need to look for a “girl” or “boy” bike, just choose the best kids bike, and find a color your child loves. If you’re wondering which brands have purple and pink and turquoise colors for a 4 or 5 year old girl, check out our page on the best bikes for girls .

You also always have the option of adding cute bike accessories to any bike to make it more feminine. For our favorite girls bike accessories, check out our list of best kids bike accessories .

  Woom 3

Woom 3 Kids Bike

Price : $449 I Our Score: 99

Weight: 13.1 lbs I Minimum seatpost height: 19.3″ I Freehub : yes

Woom Bikes are hands down my favorite bike brand for young kids.  The Woom 3 boasts color-coded dual handbrakes, no coaster brake, a super lightweight build, and child-specific geometry that makes learning to ride easy.

All the components on the Woom 3 are top-notch. They include sealed bearings, Jagwire cable, a quick-release seatpost collar, and stainless steel spokes. The bike will last through multiple children and catch a good resale value, or alternatively, trade it in as part of the Woom Upcycle program.

Woom 3

The bike weighs a mere 13 pounds, which can make a huge difference in a child’s enjoyment and endurance. The other thing that sets the Woom 3 apart from others is the opportunity to add the Automagic hub. It does cost an additional $50, but provides an automatic, internally-geared two speed hub.

We literally have nothing negative to say about the Woom 3. The only thing that could make it better would be if it was cheaper, but it’s super competitively priced for what you get.

Prevelo Alpha Two

prevelo alpha two 16 inch kids bike

Price: $469 I Our Score: 93

Weight: 14.4 lbs I Minimum seatpost height: 17″ I Freehub : yes

The Prevelo Alpha Two is a bike for bike snobs.  This little package looks good, comes with top-notch components, and is super light.

It has everything we look for in a kids bike–child-specific geometry, no coaster brake, and a lightweight build. The parts are quality and include custom, in-house HEIR brand three-piece cranks, stem, and saddle.

If your rider is on the smaller side, note the extremely low minimum seatpost height of 17 inches. That’s the lowest of any 16 inch bike that we’re aware of, which makes this a great option for parents wishing to skip over a 14 inch bike.

Alpha Two 16" Kids Bike

Like the Woom, Prevelo also offers a trade-up program to take a bit of a bite out of the price. You can buy it for $69 at checkout, and it gives you 40% of the price of this bike back when you buy the next size bike.

Speaking of price, keep in mind that the Prevelo Alpha Two does NOT come with all the extras (kickstand, bell, etc) that some of the other bikes on this list do. You can add them at checkout, but consider that when comparing cost.

Early Rider Belter 16

Early Rider Belter

Price: $479 I Our Score: 93

Weight: 13.1 lbs I Minimum seatpost height: 17.5″ I Freehub : yes

The Early Rider Belter is a grown-up bike for little riders.  The Belter boasts a beautiful hand brushed aluminum frame, belt drive (instead of a chain), and high-quality components.

Every little feature is top notch. Components include brand name parts like the Ritchey stem and handlebars, Vee Speedster tires, and Tektro V-brakes. Even the aluminum pedals are more upscale than the typical plastic pedals found stock on most kids bikes.

belt drive

The low maintenance belt drive is quiet and grease-free. It also stands up well in the elements, as does the corrosion-resistant hardware on the bike.

One thing to be aware of is that the reach is longer than the Woom or Prevelo Alpha listed above, and it has limited adjustability. If your kiddo is already a whiz on a bike, this more aggressive position might suit them well. But, if they are more timid or still new to pedaling, they will likely be more comfortable on a bike with a more upright position.

pello revo 16 inch pink girls bike

Price: $399 I Our Score: 90

Weight: 14.6 lbs I Minimum seatpost height: 19″ I Freehub : yes

If your child likes riding off-road, consider the Pello Revo .  The Revo has a mountain bike feel with beefy tires and a rock-solid build.  The “ride right geometry” makes both learning to ride and mastering technical skills easy.

Pello Romper Brakes

Virtually all the components are brand-name so you know what you’re buying is high-quality. These parts include a Cane Creek heaset, Kenda tires, Tektro brakes, and Alex rims.

The plastic chainguard is flimsy and easy to break, which is fine if you plan on removing it (we would), but less than ideal if you were hoping to keep it on.

Frog-48-Green

Price: $495 I Our Score: 90

Weight: 14.1 lbs I Minimum seatpost height: 18.5″ I Freehub : yes

The Frog 44 comes in a variety of bright, fun colors sure to please any child. We love that the spokes on either side of the valve are colored as well.

But enough about the way the bike looks! The Frog 44, like all the offerings from this UK company, are designed for performance. It is lightweight, has a low center of gravity, and appropriate gearing for most riding conditions.

frog 44 on the pump track

The bike comes standard with fenders (a plus for folks who live in wet climates) as well as a bell.

Our only complaint is that while we appreciate the built-in steering limiter, we don’t love that it’s not removable. Kids who already have the biking thing down pat don’t need one.

Spawn Yoji 16

spawn yogi 16 in pink

Price: $340 I Our Score: 90

Weight: 14.7 lbs I Minimum seatpost height: 19″ I Freehub : yes

The Spawn Yoji 16 is a high-quality kids’ bike from the mountain biking Mecca of Squamish, British Columbia. The Yoji is a lightweight bike with a durable aluminum frame that can withstand the challenges of trail riding.

The in-house designed components are child-specific, making the bike fit perfectly for little bodies. The wheels are off-road ready and the Loam Star tires offer puncture protection, making it easy for children to handle dirt, gravel, and grass with ease.

Some parents may find the brake setup intimidating, and the factory communication can be spotty. Additionally, the wheels attach via 15mm bolts, which are prone to leading to scrapes when kids inevitably crash.

Cleary Hedgehog

used trek 16 inch bike

Price: $340 I Our Score: 85

Weight: 16 lbs I Minimum seatpost height: 20″ I Freehub : yes

The Cleary Hedgehog is a gorgeous 16 inch bike designed for parents who take looks AND quality seriously.  The classic steel frame is durable and will last thru several children. The price recently dropped on this bike as well, making it a killer deal.

Cleary offers a freehub option, and the Hedgehog comes with easy-to-pull child-sized Tektro handbrakes.

Cleary Hedgehog Kids 16" Bike

One thing that makes the Hedgehog unique is the inclusion of a flip-flop hub with the option to install different sized cogs on each side. You have to actually uninstall and flip the wheel to make this gear change so it is still a singlespeed bike, but one that offers slightly more flexibility.

The only thing dragging down our score on this bike is the weight. At 16 pounds, it is heftier than our other faves.

biky kids bike

Price: $399 I Our Score: 85

Weight: 11.9 lbs I Minimum seatpost height: 20″ I Freehub : yes

The Biky 16 stands out due to it’s extremely light weight. At just under 12 pounds, it’s the lightest bike on this list!

Some of that weight savings is due to the fact that the bike has eliminated any “extras.” There’s no kickstand, or bell, and the bike has a single rear brake rather than dual handbrakes. Still, the weight savings can be a big help particularly for more petite kids.

child standing over the biky frame

The bike has an upright riding position and a long wheelbase–which makes it extra stable for kids just learning to pedal.

Currently it comes in only one color–white with red accents–so if that’s not your child’s jam, you may want to look elsewhere. Or, just add some fun, colorful accessories.

belsize 16 kids bike

Price: $339 I Our Score: 82

Weight: 12.5 lbs I Minimum seatpost height: 20″ I Freehub : yes

When we first heard about the Belsize 16 , we were skeptical. How could a bike with that light of a weight and those good of components have a price tag so low?!

After testing the bike, however, we were convinced. This bike is nothing less than amazing for the price.

belsize 16

It has a continental belt drive, weighs in at a shockingly low 12.5 pounds, and has dual hand brakes (no coaster).

Complaints? Not many. The Belsize 16 does NOT have quick-release seatpost collar, and there’s the fact that the bike isn’t produced by a bike company (it’s produced by a Chinese sporting goods brand) so there’s always the concern of after-market customer support.

Looking for the safest bike around? Guardian uses proprietary SureStop technology to create a safer braking experience. No longer can kids grab too much brake and fly over the handlebar, as the bike’s braking system controls the force going to the front wheel.

guardian 16 size

The Guardian 16 is a more affordable high quality bike. It’s a great buy for parents who want a good bike, but don’t want to spend a fortune either.

The bicycle has good child-appropriate geometry that will inspire confidence, and mimics the geo found on more expensive kids bikes. It also has dual handbrakes (no coaster), a wide handlebar, and high-volume tires.

The trade-off to keep the price low is that none of the components are brand-name and it’s a bit heavier. Still, it’s a worthwhile choice for many parents on a budget.

Honorable Mentions

While these bikes didn’t make it onto our short-list, they are worth a look as well.

  • Islabikes Cnoc 16 – Islabikes has recently resumed business in Europe. If you’re in N. America, keep an eye out for a used Cnoc, they are a cult classic.
  • Specialized Jett 16 – Lightweight, highly adjustable, and available at local Specialized dealers.
  • Priority Start 16 – This is a belt drive, low maintenance little bike. More affordable than the Early Rider Belter, and comes in beautiful colors.
  • Trek Precaliber 16 – At 18 pounds, it’s lighter than some of the other LBS brands, and it has a low center of gravity. Of course, we’re not crazy about the coaster brake or training wheels.
  • Batch Bicycles 16 – A budget local bike shop bike that has better geometry than most.
  • Co-Op Cycles 16 – A good choice if you have an REI dividend burning a hole in your pocket.

Comparison Chart: 16 Inch Bikes

How to choose the very best 16 inch bike for your child.

Below, I’ll give you a list of all the good bikes on the market, but how do you know which one is best for YOUR child? Consider these factors.

16 inch bikes are generally appropriate to buy for 4 and 5 year old kids, and you can expect them to last a year or two. That said, each child is different. For instance, my son and his cousin who are only a few months apart are nearly six inches apart in height.

Therefore, it is really very important to measure your child before buying a bike . What may fit one child at 4 may not fit another until 5.

  • Read : 3 Tips To Help You Pick the Right Size Bike For Your Child

For maximum comfort and stability, I recommend that your child’s inseam be at least as long as the minimum seat height. While technically their inseam can be slightly shorter than the minimum seat height (it will fit on their tippy-toes), kids this young who are just learning to ride do best if they can put their feet flat on the ground.

If your child is already a master pedaler, then you can pick a slightly larger bike. In this case, you can choose a bike with a minimum seatpost that is about 2 inches taller than their inseam. Don’t go any bigger than that, or your child will really struggle.

The other thing to consider is the bike’s standover height . If your child is still a bit on the small side for a 16″ inch, look for a bike with a sloped top-tube that allows your child to stand over the frame comfortably.

Finally, check your child’s inseam and height measurements against those recommended by the manufacturer of the bike you are considering . Most of the company’s on this list do a great job of this. Woom, for example, has a tape measure you can get to ensure the right fit. Guardian has gone more high-tech with a virtual fit tool on their website.

After ensuring a bike is the right size, the next most important thing to consider is the weight. Most kids bikes, especially those from the big box stores, weight WAY too much for young kids.

When comparing two bikes, I will always pick the lightest one. It makes a huge difference in a child’s enjoyment level and in how long they can ride.

Look for a bike that is no more than 30% of your child’s body weight (tough isn’t it)? Of all the bikes on our list, the Biky 16 is the lightest, followed closely by the Belize 16, Woom 3, and the Early Rider Belter.

16 inch bike weight compared

Unfortunately, just like most things in life, the more you spend on a bike the better quality it is going to b (generally).

child on the belsize 16 pro

The good news is that when you buy a high-quality bike, like any of those on our top picks, it will last thru several children. This makes it a good investment if you have younger kids it can be passed on to or to sell on Craiglist.

That said, there is a tipping point where spending more doesn’t always equate to a better bike. In the chart below, we compare price vs our overall score.

used trek 16 inch bike

The Woom 3, for example, has the highest score but not the highest price . In our opinion, you do not get more bike for spending more money for the Spawn or Frog.

Of course, we realize that not everybody wants to spend over $300 on a kids bike. If that’s you, look at the Guardian or Forth. Both provide good value.

Another option is to familiarize yourself with the bikes on this list and then search for one used. Buying a high quality, used kids bike is the best bang for your buck overall. (The tricky part is finding one).

  • Read: 5 Tips For Finding Used Kids Bikes

I’m a huge proponent of teaching children to use hand brakes and bypassing coaster brakes. I’m at a point now where I won’t even put my son on a bike with a coaster brake, or teach another child to ride using one.

To decide whether a freewheel or coaster brake set-up is best for you, and more about both options, read this detailed article I’ve written .

You’ll notice that all of the bikes on our top 10 list come with a freewheel rather than a coaster.

Tektro Handbrakes on Cleary Hedgehog

Training Wheels

Training wheels? Just don’t do it! If your child hasn’t mastered a balance bike yet, start there and then transition to a pedal bike later.

Alternatively, you can buy a pedal bike and temporarily remove the pedals. Have your child learn to scoot and glide on the bike before putting the pedals back on.

If you go this route, make sure the bike you choose has a minimum seatpost height no larger than your child’s inseam. They need to be able to put their feet flat on the ground!

If you MUST have training wheels , the Byk E-350 and the Co-Op Cycles 16 are two bikess on this list that offer them.

Frame Material

This is a highly personal choice—some people have a clear preference for aluminum or steel. I don’t personally.

Aluminum is the lighter material, and we all know how important saving weight is on kids bikes, but steel is super durable (and classic).

Where To Shop

The easiest place to start is where NOT to shop. Walmart and other big box shops are not bike shops and we wouldn’t recommend buying a bike from them.

  • Read : 5 Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Buy Walmart Kids Bikes

A local bike shop (or REI) is a big step in the right direction. These shops will offer better quality bikes, but beware that not all shops carry a good selection of kids bikes AND not all bike shop staff are well versed in kids bikes or even in fitting the right sized bike. If you are going to go to LBS, know what size and brand you are looking for before you go.

Your final option is to shop online. Many of the best kids bike brands ONLY sell through their websites.

If you do shop online, we recommend buying directly from the brand rather than via Amazon or other websites than might sell knock-offs. This ensures the bikes are properly assembled, and that you get the best after-market customer service support. Which brings us to our next point…

Customer Service

How important good customer service is in picking a bike is a personal matter. If you’re good working on bikes–assembling them and fixing them–then you may be fine buying from a brand with a lower degree of customer service.

However, if you are less confident with bikes, then a reputable company with a strong emphasis on customer service is worth considering. Such a company will guarantee that your bike is assembled correctly and thoroughly inspected before it’s shipped to you.

Additionally, they will help you with obtaining replacement parts if and when required.

How We Came Up Our List Of The Best 16 Inch Bikes

Our journey with kids bikes began 10 years ago when our son was just a toddler! Since then, we have extensively tested and reviewed LOTS of bikes, and also gained valuable insights while riding with other parents and kids.

Rest assured that the bikes listed here are ones that we have personally tried and tested, and we confidently recommend them to fellow parents. Every bike on the list is a top-quality option, though of course, we do have our favorites!

How We Tested The Bikes

We put these bikes through their paces, and while we may be too big to ride them ourselves, we enlisted our kids, as well as our friends’ and neighbors’ little ones, to help us out.

These bikes have been ridden in the ways they were intended, but also tested on more challenging terrain, from singletrack to DIY ramps. We’re passionate about biking and ride year-round, so we know how to push bikes to their limits.

Beyond our own experiences, we also value input from our community. We receive countless emails from all of you and have a thriving Facebook group. We connect with parents in real life, chatting with them at the pump track and the school bike corral. We appreciate and consider all of the feedback we receive.

How We Scored The Bikes

Putting a numeric score to a bike is a tough thing; although it helps make our ratings more accurate, it’s still subjective. We urge you not to spend too much time belaboring these scores, and instead look for a bike that seems like it would be a good fit for YOUR child.

All that said, here is what we were looking for when ranking the bikes.

  • Weight : We mentioned it early and we’ll mention it again, for young kids weight is the single most important factor in choosing a bike. We’ve given it 30% of our overall score.
  • Quality components:  Durable and high end parts mean that a bike will be enjoyable and fun to ride AND that it will last through multiple children. We don’t recommend any bikes that will end up in a landfill anytime soon. We gave this another 30% of the total score.
  • Child Appropriate Geometry / Ease Of Riding : Here we looked at things like the frame geometry, wheelbase length, and crank length. It also takes into account how easily our testers were able to get riding on the bike–no easy feat for kids hopping on their first pedal bikes. This was 20% of our score.
  • Customer service:  Many of the bikes on our list are direct to consumer, meaning you order them online rather than buying thru a local bike shop. This makes it really important that the bike is properly assembled and thoroughly inspected before shipping. It also means that we look for brands that actually answer email and phone calls with issues and questions. This accounted for 10% of our total score.
  • Aesthetics : The way a bike LOOKS shouldn’t really matter, but it does. Kids are more likely to ride bikes they think look awesome, and we’re more likely to spend our hard earned money on things that look nice too. This was the final 10% of our score.

Thank you so much Kristen! All your info helping greatly as I start my search. Any feedback on Norco 16” Freewheel (Mirage). It is handbrake/ freewheel which was a Priority for me. The weight is 17.9. And at the tops of what I could afford at $259. Hoping to buy local instead of online and I know that limits my choices. Hoped I could find a quality used bike but unfortunately just couldn’t. Thanks for any input on this bike if you have!

Hi Sarah, For your price range, and wanting to buy local, the Norco is a great choice. I haven’t personally tested it, but have had the opportunity to see plenty of kids riding it, and have received good feedback from other parents on it. I’d say go for it (and then let us know what you think too)!

I am looking for my 4 year old to get him a pedal bike this fall/winter. He’s a speed demon on his Strider and I just found a used Strider Super (16” pneumatic tires, rear caliper brake) to get him used to the higher weight and handbrake concept. His seat is currently set at 17-17.5 inches. He loves riding on graveled trails and the awesome large skate park near our house. We haven’t done much singletrack with him since last summer because he complained about how bumpy it was on his normal Strider (foam tires), but I expect that we’ll be back on it shortly now that he has pneumatic tires, since that is my favorite riding. The most important quality for this upcoming bike is durability, as I have a 20 month old son who just started gliding on his Strider (must… keep….. up!!!!) and another son due at the end of the month that I want this bike to last through (so nearly 6 years of foreseeable use). I live in the very wet and rainy Pacific Northwest. I don’t want coaster brakes and definitely want front and rear handbrakes; 16 pounds is pretty much my cutoff as my son is still under 40 pounds. I had pre-ordered a Stampede, but they cancelled the order and aren’t producing anything in 2018 (the specs on that looked like the sweet spot for fit, components, weight, and price) so I’m back to shopping. I like several bikes but I have concerns about each. To compound this, I don’t have a convenient bike shop to check any of these out at. Cleary Hedgehog: Probably the frontrunner, I’m concerned about the steel frame rusting and also the low gearing. I’d definitely have to get a second freewheel to increase the top end speed but they no longer have the 13 tooth cog (smallest Cleary offers) in stock. The flip-flop hub would seem to be an advantage for swapping between single track/skate park riding and neighborhood riding. If it is a little big for him, I can delay giving it to him and let him keep enjoying the Strider Super. Frog 48: Looks great, but I think the steering limiter would frustrate him (we go to the skate park/pump track 2-3 times a week). Woom 3: Everyone raves about it, but I’m not sure about the upright geometry vs. the Cleary/Frog and how good it will be for the skate park and singletrack riding. My eldest is fairly aggressive and my younger son is acting even more aggressive/fearless when riding (he’s a full year ahead of my eldest son’s bike usage/progression). I love the weight, but wish the SRAM Automatix hub was still available, as the gearing seems a little low once he’s used to pedaling (the chainring is smaller than most others used). Spawn Banshee: The Yoji 16 sounds great and it is out of my price range, but there are used Spawn Banshees always for sale about 3 hours north of me in Canada. Several forums have made it seem like the Spawns are smaller and wouldn’t last as long; also I’ve got the impression that you pay a lot for used Banshees but the Cleary may have better components at a similar price to a used Banshee. Commencal Ramones 16: I can’t find much reliable information about this one, especially about minimum seat heights. The rest of it looks good, but it’s weight is a little more than ideal. Norco Samurai: I’ve heard good things but can’t find weight or minimum seat height. The price is enough to keep me interested, especially because a semi-local bike shop can order one for me (but they don’t keep any in stock). What would you recommend?

Wow, you have definitely done your homework and put a lot of thought into this.

Of the bikes you’ve listed, I would go with either the Hedgehog or the Woom 3. Both are great bikes. With the Cleary, the frame is powdercoated so I dont *think* rust would be too much of an issue especially if it is stored indoors. You can always order the cog you want elsewhere and install it later. Honestly, I would wait until he’s riding it and then see if the gearing is even an issue.

As for the Woom 3, it is without a doubt my son’s favorite bike and he has LOTS. I know a lot of parents have concerns about the geometry, but my son is VERY agressive–on the pump track, skatepark, and on singletrack. It has not hurt him at all; if anything it has helped him develop into a more confident and skilled rider. I agree with your concerns on the Frog and Spawn, and don’t have any personal experience with the Commencal or the Norco but know they both a weigh a bit more. Hopefully, I’ll be doing some reveiws of those bikes soon.

Thanks for the advice! I’m now leaning more to the Woom 3, but have a couple more questions. Would it still be your kid’s favorite without the two speed hub that’s no longer available? I’m still concerned about its geometry and cockpit size because my son has a long torso and short legs; the Cleary or the Prevolo Alpha 2 might provide more time before upgrading is required. Do you think the Woom will last through 3 kids?

Great questions. I do think the Woom would still be his favorite bike without the Automatix hub, but maybe not quite as much so. He definitely loves that hub and it is sad that it is no longer made. All three bikes are high quality and will last thru three kids, no problem. You’ve narrowed it down to some great bikes and you really can’t go wrong.

How about the haro shredder 16? We have tried a lot of bikes but the cheapest of the ones we like is the haro shredder. I am getting one for about 60 odd in fairly excellent condition. My son is comfortable on the prevelo alpha two and can just about manage to get his feet to touch the ground, but we havent yet tried the haro. Do you think he’d be able get an equivalent comfortable ride on the haro? I am about to have a girl and was hoping this bike would last until she can use it (thats about 3-4 years away).

Sorry had to ask about one other option I have. This is a Jamis Laser 16 for about the same price as the haro. There’s a difference in their geometry and weight. My son is a little light weight for his age group. Which do you think would be a better choice? Thanks..

Adding one more comment, we checked out the Jamis lazer but thats way too heavy for my kid. We had an option on a cannondale 16″ as well but it is relatively heavy at 21lbs and also the geometry isnt that great. Its a little too aggressive for my son’s tastes. The haro was great, weight wise and with its not too aggressive stance, but it had been used a lot and for the price (100) it wasnt justified especially since I got a Cnoc 16 for 175 in great condition. Of all the bikes my son loved this and the prevelo the most. Couldnt find a used prevelo alpha two for around the same price as the cnoc 16, so got the cnoc 16.

You have provided so much helpful information. Thank you! I have an almost 5 year old who hasn’t had a balance bike. I was going to do training wheels, but after reading your webpage I am going to do a pedal bike and take off the pedals until he learns to balance. I would have never thought to do this if it wasn’t for your article. You saved us a lot of money and frustration. thanks!!

Any thoughts on BMX style bikes? What’s good, what to avoid? Recommended models for 5-7 year old just starting out? Also, I tried downloading your cheat sheet, but there isn’t a working link for the download. Thanks.

Hi Corey, We are actually planning on a bike BMX review project for 2019, but as of right now, I don’t have enough experience to give you a good recommendation. As for the cheat sheet, I’m sorry to hear it didn’t work for you. If you want to send me an email ([email protected]), I will get it to you.

The Louis Garneau Petit 16 is not on your list but is super awesome. Lists for $360 CAD ($270 USD). Aluminum frame, dual Tektro hand brakes, free wheel, riser bar, threadless stem, 19″ seat height, and only 15.8 pounds. Low bottom bracket for good leg extension even when at the lowest seat position, long wheelbase for a relaxed riding position, and overall great geometry for little kids. Best part is you can buy it at a local bike shop.

Hello, please could you let me know what you think of the Guardian original(339$) and Guardian Ethos (239$) bikes? thanks!

Hello, please could you let me know what you think of the Guardian original(339$) and Guardian Ethos (239$) bikes? I was looking at the sub 200$ range, but Guardian Ethos is the one that came closest to that range and would be a tough stretch but maximum I could at this age (4.5 years child), maybe once she’s older I ll get her a better one.

Please take into account WOOM bikes weight is measured without pedals.

Please check German manufacturer KUbikes, they are very lightweight bikes.

WOOM renewed their 2019 line with full protection chain box and side reflective tyres (changed the latter from Kenda to Schwalbe, ate last in Europe).

I’m looking at the Woom and the Commencal Ramon 2020 (now with disc brakes). We will mainly be riding dirt trails. Which would you recommend for my 4 year old. He currently rides a Haro shredder and rips it on the trails.

Hi Christina, For mountain biking, I would go with the new Ramones and/or the Prevelo Zulu Two HEIR. Both are great options for little rippers.

Hi Kristen, Been a big fan of your reviews. Just wondering if parents do actually install kickstand on kids’ bikes (16”)? Been to a few stores locally, either the available selection doesn’t look good with the bike’s colour, or they have negative reviews on the clamping system (screws & nuts breaking if tighten too much).

Hi Derek, Thanks for the kind words. I’m a big fan of kickstands on little kids bikes…keeps them from throwing them on the ground all the time…..I don’t know about good looking kickstands, but we have the Greenfield kickstand ( https://amzn.to/2lJDoZr ) on several bikes and really like it. You will have to cut-it down but it’s designed to be able to do that. What bike are you planning on putting it on? Cheers, KB

Awesome reviews! I love the video. What state are all these amazing kid friendly bike parks and skills parks in?!

Hi Andy, Thanks for the kind words….We live in Utah, but a lot of those video clips were taken while traveling as well. Cheers, KB

Hi I’m looking for bikes for my girls. I called a couple local bike shops about the batch bikes. But everyone is having trouble even getting bikes in because of covid. Understandable but one place mentioned looking into retrospec bikes (the koda kids bike) they also have a new one coming out I think it was the Beaumont for kids . I don’t see that you mentioned them. What are you’re feeling in this bike for kids. The town we live in doesn’t have sidewalk so we are limited to parks or our property which is mostly compacted dirt (DG). I need 3 bikes (for triplet girls) so I would really like to keep my cost down. I haven’t been able to find used bikes right now either, except for the big box store ones.

Hi Breanne, It really is SO hard to find bikes right now, I feel ‘ya! I don’t have any first-hand experience with the Retrospec bikes, so take anything I say with a grain of salt. Just looking at the specs, I’d be concerned about the weight (it’s really heavy!) and the quill-style headset (these have a tendency to rattle loose on cheaper bikes). That said, any bike is better than no bike, and if that’s all you can find right now in your price range, I wouldn’t feel bad about it.

Hi! I read your review of the Guardian 16 and it sold me on it. But when you listed your top picks, it was on the list. I’m confused. The Guardian review even seemed to put it ahead of the Woom. Help?

Typo — it *wasn’t* on the list.

Hello, Thanks a lot for the detailed article. My 4 year old currently has a woom 2 but he is outgrowing fast. Since woom is very hard to find these and I m seeing used islabike come on sale time to time. My only concern is that it has coaster break. Is there a way to convert it into a free wheel? I like everything about islabikes but the coaster break. Thanks .

My oldest (4) is about to graduate to a 16 wheel bike. I’m planning to get him one for his birthday (rs) at the beginning of next month. He’s great at hand brakes and coaster brakes. He can ride off curbs and loves to ride. He’s 44 with a 16 inseam. What would you choose? We’ve had him on a Cleary Gecko 12 which I absolutely adore! But my 3 year old has taken it over since he learned to pedal last month.

12 Best Kids' Bikes for Every Age, Size, and Level

used trek 16 inch bike

Your children will never forget how to ride a pedal bike and the fun they had cycling through their neighborhood or ripping up a dirt trail on their kids bikes. Those lessons and precious childhood memories should be made on a comfortable, safe bicycle built for their needs. This means finding a bike designed for children and not just a smaller version of an adult bike. “The geometry of kids’ bikes are tailored to suit the proportions of a child's body,” explains Kris Bruington of The Cyclist Choice. “This includes a lower center of gravity, shorter reach to the handlebars, and a frame that allows for easy mounting and dismounting.”

To find the best kids’ bikes for all children, we consulted with Bruington and other parenting and cycling experts for their advice and recommendations. We also ran a survey for about 100 parents and guardians to learn what features and characteristics they look for when shopping for a bike for their child. The result is our list of the best kids’ bikes for all children with a range of special features, sizes, and prices.

Guardian Bike  »

Tofu

Can be used balance bike or with training wheels before adding pedals

Hybrid tires can go on paved and unpaved trails

SureStop brake system

Adjustable seat

Multiple colors

Handlebars aren’t adjustable

The Guardian Bike is the best bike for most children because it can be used for many years and is packed with award-winning safety features. It can be used as a balance bike (a bicycle with no pedals that teaches children how to steer and balance) or equipped with training wheels before they’re ready to pedal on their own.

The bike also helps with the transition to pedals because it’s designed for children’s anatomy, specifically the Q-factor – the horizontal distance between pedals. Guardian bikes have a shorter distance between the pedals, which puts the child’s hips, legs, and feet into a position that maximizes pedaling power output. Beyond that, it has a low step-through height, narrow grips, and a low center of gravity to prevent tipping. The adjustable seat allows children to remain comfortable until they outgrow the bike, which should be around when they turn 6.

Parents will love the SureStop brake system, an award-winning feature that gives riders more control when stopping and locks both wheels. Since there’s only one brake lever for them to pull, there’s no concern about them using the wrong one and accidentally flipping over their handlebars.

JOYSTAR Aquaboy Kids Cruiser Bike  »

Tofu

Adjustable seat and handlebars

Removable training wheels

Wide cushioned seat

Fully enclosed chain guard

Uses coaster brake

Only two colors

The price of a kid's bike is a main concern for our surveyed group. After all, kids grow quickly, and the bike will likely only get a few years of use per kid. The JOYSTAR Aquaboy Kids Cruiser Bike may not come with all the bells and whistles of more expensive kids’ bikes, but it still provides a decent amount of bang for your buck. For one, it comes with removable training wheels so your child can use it to learn the basics of pedaling and steering before they’re ready to convert it to a pedal bike. Plus, since both the seat and handlebars are adjustable, you won’t have to buy a grown-up bike for a few years.

Two tire sizes are available, so you should measure your child’s inseam length to determine which is best for them. (The inseam is the distance from right below the crotch to the bottom of the ankle, and it’s the measurement used to ensure you’re picking an appropriately sized bike that feels comfortable and safe.) It has a fully enclosed chain guard to prevent clothes and other items from getting snagged by the chain, which in turn is protected from mud and the elements to prolong the bike’s life and minimize needed repairs. For longer rides, there’s a wide cushioned seat made with high-density support foam and dual supportive springs so they remain comfortable.

Priority Start  »

Tofu

Grease-free and durable chain

Puncture-resistant tires

Easy-to-reach dual handlebar brakes

Four colors

Takes a while to assemble

If safety is your top priority when shopping for a kids’ bike – it was for our surveyed group – consider the Priority Start bicycle. Instead of using a traditional metal chain, this Priority bike uses a Gates Belt made of carbon fiber tensile cords that are grease-free, require little to no maintenance, and are less likely to break during a ride since the belt guard adds an extra layer of protection. Worried about flat tires? Worry no longer thanks to the bike’s puncture-resistant tires that can withstand small rocks and other objects likely to pop weaker tires. The bike is also rustproof, which keeps it looking good and ensures all parts continue to work as intended.

Just as the bike is designed for a child’s frame, the dual handlebar brakes are positioned to make it easy for their small hands to grasp them when needed. Priority opts for handlebar brakes over coaster brakes, which require riders to pedal backward to stop, because it says they’re more natural for children and prevent sudden stops. Although not billed as a safety feature, it doesn’t hurt that it’s a lightweight bike that should be easy enough for most children to operate with relative ease. No matter how safe the bike is, tumbles are always a possibility, so make sure your kiddo is equipped with a proper bike helmet every time they're on their bike.

Retrospec Koda Plus  »

Kids' Bikes

Highly adjustable seat and handlebar

Adjustable brake lever

Multiterrain tires

Safety bell

50-day return policy

Assembly required

The Retrospec Koda Plus has a 6-inch seat height range, making it the most highly adjustable kid’s bike of the more than 25 options we researched. Starting at 21.5 and going up to 27.5 inches, the seat can comfortably support children as they grow. The handlebars are also adjustable, allowing kids a comfortable grip no matter how many growth spurts they go through. Speaking of grip, the dual brake levers can be adjusted to be closer or farther from their hands if needed. Like the other bikes on this list, the Koda Plus is designed so children can easily pedal, and it has a step-through frame so they can get on and off on their own.

The wide and grooved tires mean kids can use this bike on multiple trail types as their bike riding skills and confidence grow. If they love riding up and down hills and through dirt trails, look into getting them a beginner mountain bike once they're grown up a bit and secure enough in their riding. The cushioned seat keeps them comfortable no matter where or how long they’re riding, while multiple reflectors keep them seen. Plus, the bike comes with an included safety bell.

REI Co-Op Cycles Rev 16 Kids’ Bike  »

Kids' Bikes

Low stand-over height for easy mounting and dismounting

BMX-style grips

Must have REI membership

Handlebar height isn’t adjustable

REI is known for camping and hiking gear, and Bruington says the REI Co-Op Cycles Rev 16 Kids’ Bike is “designed with younger riders in mind, featuring a lightweight aluminum frame and removable training wheels. It's an excellent transition bike that supports children as they move from balancing to pedaling.” Additionally, it has a roughly 18-inch stand-over height to make getting on and off the seat easy. While the height of the handlebars isn’t adjustable, you can change the angle to make sure your child feels comfortable grabbing onto the BMX-style grips.

Unlike most bikes on this list, the Co-Op Cycles Rev uses coaster brakes that require the rider to pedal backward to stop. While some people prefer hand brakes to ease the transition to adult bikes, coaster brakes should work just fine for children still trying to master steering and balancing. One downside is this kids' bike is only for REI members. You can become one for life for just $30. This allows you to buy the bike and gives you one year of free adjustments and access to bike experts at more than 170 stores. You'll also get discounts, cash back, and access to Re/Supply, which offers big deals on gently used clothes and gear like hiking boots , tents , and bike parts.

Prevelo Alpha Two  »

Kids' Bikes

Designed for efficient pedaling

Lightweight

Comes mostly assembled

Removable pedals

Protected rear axle

Features like kickstand cost extra

Experienced young riders will love the Prevelo Alpha Two because it has the same features as an adult bike in a kid-friendly package. Plus, it's a hybrid bike that can be used on paved or dirt roads. If they’re not ready for pedaling, the bike can be used as a balance bike or with training wheels. But for those who have graduated to pedal bikes, the Alpha Two comes with customized cranks – the parts of the bike that help move the chain to create motion – built for children’s anatomy. Combined with a narrow Q-factor and low center of gravity, this helps the rider pedal efficiently. Since it’s a lightweight bike, they’ll have no issues maneuvering.

Quality and durability were main concerns for our surveyed group. The bike will ease those concerns with its aluminum frame and dual aluminum V-brakes, similar to those on adult bikes but smaller to accommodate children’s hands. A protected rear axle and rubber seals around the rear and front hub protect the bike from sudden drops and prevent dirt and mud from getting into the gears. Worried about your child outgrowing this bike too soon? Prevelo offers a Trade-Up Club option, which gives you a 40% discount on your next bike if purchased within 24 months of the Alpha Two.

Strider 14X Sport  »

Kids' Bikes

Balance bike

Adjustable seat and handlebar

Ships mostly assembled

Pedal kit sold separately

Smaller wheels

While the Strider 14X Sport isn’t the only kids’ bike with optional pedals, it’s recommended by our experts as a dependable option for teaching children the basics of balancing before moving on to pedaling. When used as a balance bike, there’s a wide footrest to help teach children how to stay upright when they have momentum. It should go without saying that that’s a skill they’ll need to perfect before adding the pedal conversion kit , which is sold separately. It’s one of the few balance bikes with air-filled tires, which can be used to teach your child the importance of checking tire pressure.

Another reason we and our biking experts love this Strider is its adjustability, which is an important consideration for our surveyed group. The seat accommodates children 37 to 49 inches tall, and the handlebars are just as customizable. With an 80-pound weight capacity, it’s perfect for most children ages 3 to 7. The bike is available in multiple colors and requires little assembly – simply connect the front tire, handlebar, and seat to the main frame with the included tools; use a bike pump to fill the tires with air; and you’re done.

Kids' Bikes

One of the lightest children’s pedal bikes

130-pound weight capacity

Steering limiter

Keeps rider in upright position

High handlebars may not be good for kids with shorter arms

The Woom 3 is one of the (if not the) lightest kids’ pedal bikes at just 13.1 pounds, which makes it easy for your child to maneuver and pick up speed. Despite its lightweight nature, which can be attributed to being made of aluminum instead of steel like most bikes, it has the highest weight capacity of any bike on this list: 130 pounds. If you’re worried about your child maneuvering the bike too much, the Woom 3 has a steering limiter that prevents overturning. It can be removed when you’re more confident in your child’s steering abilities. Another built-in feature that could reduce crashes is the color-coordinated brake levers. The right-side brake is green and controls the rear tire, which teaches children to pull that one first to avoid locking the front tire and potentially flipping over the handlebars. Both brake levers are adjustable to ensure they’re within reach.

Woom bikes are built with a narrow Q-factor, a low step-through frame, and an adjustable seat and handlebars that accommodate children 41 to 47 inches tall. The high-rise handlebars are positioned to keep your child upright while riding, which can help with balance but may be challenging to those with a shorter wingspan. This bike comes in two options: Single Speed or Automagic. The latter shifts gears for the rider to gain speed on flat or downhill roads. Plus, even with the extra gear, it weighs less than most bikes on this list.

Trek Wahoo 24 Trail  »

Wide tires for stability on all surfaces

Hydraulic disc brakes

Kid-friendly shifters

30-day return policy

Weighs nearly 24 pounds

Adventurous kids will be itching to ride Trek's Wahoo 24 Trail bike up and down trails and even off-road. The bike is equipped with wide grippy wheels that'll easily clear twigs, rocks, and uneven ground and nine gears (powered by a trigger shifter) for young ones to power through elevation gains in the great outdoors. To stop your kiddo from plowing through other bikers at the bottom of a hill or going too fast into a turn, the Wahoo 24 has hydraulic disc brakes for a reliable and smooth stop.

The Wahoo 24 Trail is tested according to adult mountain bike standards so you can be sure of the aluminum frame's durability. If anything should damage the bike – after all, kids are uniquely destructive – rest easy knowing it's backed by a lifetime guarantee .

REI REV 24 Kids' Mountain Bike  »

REI REV 24 Kids' Mountain Bike

Plus-sized tires to soften bumps

Durable aluminum frame

Mechanical disc brakes are not as durable as hydraulic

Young riders looking to take their bike skills to new heights (literally) will appreciate the versatility and durability of the REI REV 24 Kids' Mountain Bike. It’s a multispeed bike that can be easily shifted to give more power during hill climbs or speed on the way back down. It’s also technically a hardtail bike as it has no suspension. These types of bikes offer more control on technical terrains and have better climbing capabilities.

The 2.6-inch-wide tires will tear through sticks and soften bumps on uneven terrain, and while mechanical disc brakes aren’t as durable as their hydraulic counterparts, they’re still responsive and reliable when needed (just be sure to check them before every ride). The textured handlebars provide a secure grip, and dual brake levers offer peace of mind for the rider and parents.

Although the bike is on the heavier side, the aluminum frame feels lightweight while in use. This allows for easier turning, and aluminum is a very durable material so other children can use it once yours outgrows the kids’ mountain bike. That might take a while since this has a 120-pound weight limit.

SUPER73-K1D  »

SUPER73-K1D

Top speed of 15 mph

Regenerative braking helps charge the battery

Intuitive throttle

Removable battery

No lights or horn

The SUPER73-K1D is an electric kids’ balance bike that helps build confidence in two ways, the first of which is balance. It comes with a removable battery so you can teach your children to steady themselves on their own first. Once they’re ready, you can start them at a lower speed and adjust the ride modes as they progress.

Your daring rider can reach speeds of up to 15 miles per hour, though that can change based on their weight and riding conditions. The red twist throttle is easy to operate – you simply twist it toward you to speed up – and a motorcycle-style seat offers enough room so they remain comfortable as they grow or easily adjust themselves when needed. It has a 90-120 minute battery life that can be extended slightly further with regenerative braking, a feature that cycles the kinetic energy from braking into the battery. Forgot to charge? You can charge it up to 80 percent in just 45 minutes.

Just to reiterate, this is a balance bike so there are no pedals and it doesn’t come with a pedal add-on kit. That might not be a problem, especially if your child tends to travel off the beaten path.

Specialized Jett 24  »

Specialized Jett 24

Designed with data from a kid-centric research group

Adjustable brake levers

Durable and long-lasting tires

Longer adjustable seatpost

V-brakes are less reliable in the rain

The Specialized Jett 24 is the best road bike for kids because it was created using data from a research group that analyzed young riders to create a bike with the best proportions for children. In the case of this bike, that means short-reach brake levers that can be adjusted without tools, grips with narrower diameters built for kids’ hands, and a saddle built to provide comfort and prevent injuries during rides.

The research was performed by Retül, a firm that analyzes thousands of riders to help fitters and retailers find the best bikes for their customers. Specialized and Retül also took into consideration how kids grow. A two-hole position crank and long seat tube can be adjusted as their legs grow, as can the handlebar as their arms get longer. Some riders may be able to ride it into adulthood, as it has a 250-pound rider weight limit and a 300-pound structural weight limit.

V-brakes require little maintenance and are generally reliable, though they don’t perform as well when they get wet or muddy. While it’s more expensive than other kids’ bikes, it might be the last one you’ll ever have to buy (unless you have more than one child) due to its unmatched adjustability.

The Bottom Line

Kids’ bikes have come a long way. They used to simply be smaller versions of what parents rode, but children’s bikes should be built according to their anatomy, which means a shorter distance between the pedals to align their hips, legs, and feet for a comfortable and efficient ride. It should also have a low step-through frame so they don’t need to be picked up when getting on or off the bike. The Guardian Bike meets all those criteria and has an award-winning brake system, making it our best overall kids’ bike.

Things To Consider When Buying Kids' Bikes

Bike Size Relative to the Child’s Age and Height: Many companies list an age and height recommendation for their bikes, but Bruington and Zohaib Sunesara , a parenting expert with experience purchasing kids’ bikes, say the best way to find an appropriately sized bike is by measuring your child’s inseam. This measurement is generally the same length between the bike seat and the pedals, which ensures your child can sit comfortably and reach the pedals.

Not sure how to measure your child’s inseam? Here’s a quick guide from Bruington:

  • Have your child stand against a wall, shoes off, and legs slightly apart.
  • Place a book between their legs spine up, and gently raise it until it’s snug against their crotch, mimicking a bike seat.
  • Measure from the top of the book to the floor. This measurement is their inseam.

The inseam is also a good indication of what wheel size is best for your child. Wheels start at 12 inches in diameter and can go up to 24 inches on kids’ bikes. Bruington provides this guide to kids’ bike wheel sizes:

  • 12 to 14 Inches: Suitable for children with an inseam of 14 to 17 inches (ages 2 to 4)
  • 16 Inches: Suitable for children with an inseam of 16 to 20 inches (ages 4 to 6)
  • 20 Inches: Suitable for children with an inseam of 19 to 25 inches (ages 5 to 8)
  • 24 Inches: Suitable for children with an inseam of 23 to 28 inches (ages 8 to 11)

Lastly, look at the stand-over height. This is the distance from the ground to the top of the bike’s frame. “[Children] should be able to stand over the bike with both feet flat on the ground, with a one- to two-inch clearance for road type bikes and two to four inches for mountain bikes,” Bruington says. “This ensures they can safely and comfortably get on and off the bike.”

Safety Features: Safety is top of mind for the majority of our surveyed group. “Children's bikes may include additional safety features such as training wheels, coaster brakes, and lower standover heights,” says Sunesara. According to Bruington, others include reflectors and lights on multiple parts of the bike. “All bikes that are purchased new should come equipped with reflectors on the front, back, wheels, and pedals,” he says. Some kids’ bikes come with chain guards to protect their fingers and clothing, and these can be good for protecting the chain from dirt as well. Just make sure the guard is removable so it can be lubed and repaired when needed.

Bruington adds that kids’ bikes can be certified by the United States-based Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) standards or the European Committee for Standardization. “In the United States, bikes should meet the safety standards set by the CPSC,” he says. “This ensures that the bike has passed tests regarding structure, assembly, and materials. For those in Europe, the CE safety standard for bikes indicates compliance with strict safety and quality guidelines.” The two organizations also certify children’s bike helmets that have undergone testing for impact absorption, strap strength, and coverage, Bruington says.

Adjustable Components for Growing Children: 74% of the parents we surveyed highlight adjustability and fit as main considerations while shopping for kids' bikes, which makes sense because adjustable components are important for keeping your child safe and comfortable on their bike. “Children's bikes often come with adjustable components such as seat height, handlebar height, and reach to accommodate growing children,” Sunesara says. It also means you won’t have to keep buying new bikes for your children as they grow.

Most companies provide a seat height range to give you a rough idea of how adjustable they are, but not all handlebars are adjustable. If a seat is too short, riders may struggle to get a full range of motion when pedaling and may have their feet closer to the ground. Handlebars should be positioned to keep the child upright to maintain balance.

Type of Brakes and Ease of Use for the Child: “Kids’ bikes often feature brakes that are specifically designed for smaller hands which require less force to operate than adult bikes ,” Bruington says. “Some models come with coaster brakes (pedal backward to stop), which is better for younger children to learn on.”

Some parents prefer the handlebar brakes because they make the transition to adult bikes easier, though it also requires teaching children how to use them properly. Some kids’ bikes only have one brake lever that locks the front and rear tires, whereas others have dual brakes. For the latter, teach your child to use the rear brake first so they don’t accidentally flip over their handlebars.

To get a better idea of what parents look for in a kids' bike, we surveyed nearly 100 parents and guardians regarding various bike features and characteristics. Among the most important to this group were a bike's quality and durability (88%), size and adjustability (74%), price and value (67%), and safety features (62%). This indicates that parents want a bike that can go the distance both in terms of longevity and years of use – and at a reasonable price. On the other hand, parents weren't so concerned about a bike's customer service support (12%), unique features (14%), or ease of assembly (15%).

Bar chart of the results of a survey of parents about what characteristics of kids' bikes they look for when shopping. Quality and Durability = 88%, Size and Adjustability = 74%, Price and Value = 67%, Safety Features = 62%, Functionality and Performance = 48%, User-Friendliness = 39%, Comfort = 36%, Build and Design = 25%, Ease of Assembly = 15%, Unique Features = 18%, and Unique Features = 12%

How We Chose the Best Kids' Bikes

To find the best kids’ bikes, the U.S. News 360 Reviews team reached out to cycling and parenting experts to hear what they look for when shopping for their children. Kris Bruington of The Cyclist Choice and parenting blogger Zohaib Sunesara shared their experiences shopping for kids’ bikes, explained how they differ from adult bicycles (apart from being smaller), and what features we should look for. Both also provided some of their favorite kids’ bikes for consideration. Before finalizing this list, the writer researched those models and others recommended by cyclists and parents on online forums and looked at customer reviews. We also conducted a survey of parents and guardians on what features they prioritized when shopping for a kids' bike.

All told, the writer looked at more than 25 kids’ bikes before whittling the list down to the top models. These picks met the criteria set by our experts, which included being built for children’s anatomy to optimize pedaling, having a low step-through frame so it’s easy for them to get on and off, having safety features such as reflectors, and having an adjustable seat and/or handlebars to accommodate growth spurts.

WHY SHOULD YOU TRUST US?

U.S. News 360 Reviews contributors and editors have years of experience researching, testing, and reviewing products. Anthony O’Reilly , the author of this piece, has been riding and fixing bikes since he was 7 and spent more time commuting on bicycles than by car. (He didn’t get his license until he was 22.) Before becoming a commerce writer, Anthony was an award-winning journalist for weekly newspapers in Queens and Long Island, New York. He worked for Blank Slate Media, the Queens Chronicle, and The Long Island Herald. For U.S. News 360 Reviews, he’s written about the best bike trailers and balance bikes .

This piece was edited by 360 Reviews senior editor Megan Wood , who specializes in family and baby content for the site. Caroline Stanko updated this piece with new research, insights, and product recommendations.

It fully depends on your child’s confidence and skills, though most start to ride a pedal bike at around age 4. Children who have used a balance bike – a bike with no pedals that teaches them to balance and steer – may move on to pedal bikes when younger than that.

Safety features on a kids’ bike should include reflectors for visibility, chain guards to protect their fingers and clothes, and appropriately sized wheels so they can sit comfortably and reach the pedals easily.

To determine the right size bike for your child, you must measure their inseam. This can be done by placing a book spine up against the crotch and measuring the distance from the top of the book to the floor. This is their inseam length and will be the ideal length between their seat and the pedals to ensure a comfortable and safe ride.
