See the City Hall in Belfast

Originally built to celebrate Belfast’s new status as a city, the City Hall is one of the most beloved   Belfast tourist attractions. We’ll show you around this grand monument to history, or you can relax on the grassy grounds, with the Belfast Wheel in the background.

Walk on the Derry City Walls

We’ll take you on a journey through history to the Derry City Walls, one of the most historically important   places to visit in Northern Ireland. Surrounding the old city center of Derry, the city walls are a 17th-century fortification with panoramic views of the region. Incredibly, most of the original structure is still standing.

Feel the Irish Spirit at St George's Market

Completed in 1896, St George’s Market is the last surviving Victorian market in Belfast and one of the oldest   Belfast attractions. There are markets every Friday and Sunday and you can explore local produce, secondhand treasures, traditional arts and crafts, Irish homewares, and live music in this beautiful building.

Explore the town of Donegal

With its wild mountains, sandy beaches and glittering lakes, Donegal is one of the most remarkable places in Europe. The scenic highlight of any Northern Ireland travel experience, we’ll take you through pretty Donegal Town, with a serene harbor, the 15th-century Donegal Abbey and the ancient Donegal Castle.

Admire 40,000 basalt columns at Giant's Causeway

Take a drive with Trafalgar up the gorgeous Antrim coastal road to the Giant’s Causeway, where you can see the natural spectacle of 40,000 interlocking basalt columns. It’s one of the most iconic things to do in Northern Ireland, and your trip will also ‘Make a Difference' by helping to preserve this natural wonder.

Our top 5 things to do in Northern Ireland

We show you the best things to do in Belfast and beyond, from the ancient Derry City Walls to the spectacular natural columns of the Giant’s Causeway.

Ulster Museum

Located in the Botanic Gardens in Belfast, the Ulster Museum is a vast display of fine art, botany, geology, culture and local and European history. It’s the largest museum in Northern Ireland with everything from dinosaur skeletons to an ancient Egyptian mummy.

The Titanic Belfast is an incredible museum, dedicated to telling the story of the Titanic, from her design and construction in Belfast in the early 1900s to her disastrous voyage. Located in the Belfast docklands, where the original Titanic was launched, you can explore over nine interactive galleries.

Downpatrick

Down County Museum

We’ll take you back through 9,000 years of history at the Down County Museum, a former prison now dedicated to documenting the history of Downpatrick. You can visit the original cells used to house prisoners in the early 1800s, and learn the legendary history of St Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland.

Best museums in Northern Ireland

Our  Belfast tours  take in the best museums and galleries in Northern Ireland. See an ancient Egyptian mummy at the Botanic gardens and discover the vivid history of the Titanic.

Ardglass potted herring

This classic Northern Irish dish consists of Ardglass herrings rolled in a dish with vinegar, spice berries, raw onions, salt and pepper. It’s baked until the top of the fish becomes crispy, then served with crusty bread and butter to mop up the tasty juices.

One of the most well-loved dishes in Northern Ireland, Ulster fry is a traditional cooked breakfast with griddle breads (potato bread and soda bread fried until golden), small pancakes, bacon, eggs, sausages, tomatoes and mushrooms, served with tea and toast.

Traditionally found in the north midlands such as Fermanagh and Donegal, Boxty is a Northern Irish potato pancake made with a blend of grated raw potatoes and cooked mashed potatoes with flour and buttermilk. Served with a smear of butter, this is a delicious favorite.

Best food in Northern Ireland

Our trips will let you in on the best places to try Northern Irish cuisine, filled with grilled bread, potato pancakes, bacon and sausages, and generous dollops of creamy butter.

What to pack for Northern Ireland

People packing for a tour

Water and windproof jacket

Northern Ireland is one of the wettest and windiest regions in Europe, with temperatures averaging just 15°C (59°F) in summer. Stay cosy with a sturdy jacket and warm layers.

A big appetite

With a hearty cuisine filled with delicious breads, meats, pancakes and potatoes in every form, you’ll need to bring your appetite for a tour of Northern Ireland.

Although the Republic of Ireland (the southern partition of Ireland) uses the Euro, Northern Ireland uses the Pound sterling, so you’ll need to change currencies at the border.

An adaptor plug

Voltage in Northern Ireland is 230V, and the sockets are of Type G, with standard British 3-pin plugs.

Northern Ireland is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places in the world, and you’ll want to bring a camera to capture all of this wild beauty.

Pack for sustainable travel

Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and reusable toiletry bottles.

Shouldered by the wild Atlantic with soul-stirring coastline, ancient castles, quaint wee villages and a vibrant metropolis that rivals cities twice its size, Northern Ireland is a true gem on the Emerald Isle. The country’s turbulent past means it hasn't always been a popular travel destination, but now we’re making up for lost time. Uncover the mystery and legend of Giant’s Causeway , learn about “the Troubles”, visit the romantic ruins of Dunluce Castle and sip on a cold pint of Guinness (or two) in Belfast’s buzzing pubs – all with the inside knowledge of a local guide.

Northern Ireland travel FAQs

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Do I need a visa to travel to Northern Ireland?

Visas in the UK are granted on a UK wide basis, so if you’re coming from overseas and have been given a visa it will be valid for England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Visa regulations are always subject to change, which is more likely after Britain's exit from the European Union (EU).

Citizens of the EU, Australia, Canada and the United States have visa-free access to Wales provided you meet the immigration rules. Learn more about visas on the   GOV.UK website .

How do I get to Northern Ireland?

If you’re traveling by air, the easiest airport to fly into is  Belfast International Airport  (BFS).

You can also fly into the smaller  George Belfast City Airport  (BHD) which is only three miles from the city centre.

The ferry is a good option if you’re traveling from Scotland or England and want to take your car.

If you’re coming from the Republic of Ireland, you can take the TransLink cross-border train from Dublin to Belfast Central Station.

Is tipping customary in Northern Ireland?

Tipping isn’t expected but if you’re happy with a meal or service, a tip is always appreciated. Rounding up a taxi fare is common.

What are some common sayings in Northern Ireland?

  • “Wee” = a word used (for pretty much everything!) but especially for small or cure things
  • “Craic” = a term used to describe a great time or a good laugh
  • “Bout ye?” = “How are you?”
  • “Buck eegit” = an endearing term for someone who is being or did something silly
  • “Houl yer whisht” = “please be quiet” or “shut up”
  • “Yoke” = a term used to describe an object, e.g. “Will you pass me that yoke (TV remote, hairbrush, glass, etc) over there?”
  • “Catch yourself on” = “Don’t be so ridiculous!”
  • “Baltic” = a term used when the weather is very cold, e.g. “It’s pure baltic outside this morning!”
  • “Aye” = “yes”
  • “Banter” = similar to craic, it’s a term used to describe having a good laugh

Can I use my mobile/cell phone while in Northern Ireland?

Mobile phone coverage is generally very good in most parts of Northern Ireland, but it might be patchy in more remote areas. Ensure global roaming is activated before you arrive if traveling from overseas.

What will it cost for a…?

  • Cup of coffee = £2.50
  • Pint of beer = £4
  • Glass of wine = £4.00
  • Simple cafe lunch = £10
  • Nice meal in a restaurant = £30

Can I drink the water in Northern Ireland?

Drinking tap water is safe in England unless otherwise marked. We recommend bringing a refillable bottle with you to avoid buying single-use plastic bottles to do your bit for the environment.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Northern Ireland?

Major credit cards are widely accepted in shops and hotels in Northern Ireland. Smaller shops may not accept credit cards, so it’s never a bad idea to carry some cash for smaller items such as a coffee, or if you’re splitting bills with your group.

What is ATM access like in Northern Ireland?

ATMs are called cash machines or cashpoints in Northern Ireland.

You’ll see plenty of them on main streets and shopping centers.

You can use Visa, MasterCard, Maestro, Plus, Amex and Cirrus at most cash machines, as well as international bank cash machines in bigger towns and cities.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

For more information on insurance, please go to: Travel Insurance

Is Northern Ireland a safe destination for LGBTQI+ travelers?

Belfast is the most LGBTQI+ friendly destination in Northern Ireland with many social meeting places for the LGBTQI+ community.

Belfast is also home to the largest LGBTQI+ festival in Ireland. Some areas of the country such as smaller country towns might be more hostile to LGBTQI+ travelers.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting   Equaldex   or   Smartraveller   before you travel.

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travelers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.

We are always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

A Guide To The Ins And Outs Of Northern Ireland

A Guide To The Ins And Outs Of Northern Ireland

If you’re unfamiliar with Northern Ireland, from how it’s different to the Republic of Ireland to what there is to see and do, this guide will get you up-to-speed fast.

Home to colourful political murals, soaring mountains, gorgeous coastlines, the Titanic’s birthplace, Game of Thrones filming locations and the world’s oldest whiskey distillery – Northern Ireland’s a magnificent corner of our island.

However, it’s also a place that can cause some confusion to visitors. We will demystify everything in the guide below.

Table of Contents

Some quick need-to-knows about Northern Ireland

what was the good friday agreement

Photos via Shutterstock

1. It’s both part of Ireland yet separate

While Northern Ireland may be on the island of Ireland, it’s officially part of the United Kingdom (and has been that way for over a century).  The border is open and easy to cross, but note that you’re entering an entirely different country when you do.

2. Differences between NI and ROI

Though the landscapes of Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland are largely the same from a visual point of view, when you cross the Northern Irish border, you’ll be using pound sterling rather Euro. You’ll also notice that the road signs have changed to miles instead of kilometres.

3. Counties of Northern Ireland

Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Derry/Londonderry and Tyrone make up the six counties of Northern Ireland and they’re all part of the historic province of Ulster. The most populous of these is Antrim (thanks mostly to Belfast), while Fermanagh is the least populous. By area, Tyrone is the largest and Armagh is the smallest.

4. Home to endless things to do

As we mentioned in the intro, there’s endless things to do in Northern Ireland ! From the majesty of the Mourne Mountains in the south to the coastal charm of Portrush in the north with the colour and history of Belfast in between, there’s tons to do here and that’s just scratching the surface.

A speedy history of Northern Ireland

Belfast City

When we say speedy, we mean speedy. The paragraphs below are intended to get you up-to-speed on Northern Irelands turbulent past in 60 seconds.

For a more detailed account, see our guide to Northern Ireland vs Ireland , which delves more into everything from the partition to the Troubles.

Northern Ireland was partitioned from the rest of Ireland in the aftermath of the 1916 Easter Rising and the end of the First World War.

The Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921 formally gave the 26 counties of Southern Ireland their independence (eventually becoming the Republic of Ireland), but the Parliament of Northern Ireland opted to stay part of the United Kingdom and it’s been that way for over 100 years.

The Troubles

The Troubles was the 30-year sectarian conflict in Northern Ireland that saw a huge amount of violence. Over 3,500 people lost their lives.

It lasted from roughly 1969 until the signing of the Good Friday Agreement in 1998.

Present day

These days Northern Ireland is a far more harmonious and welcoming place and embraces its past with honesty and reconciliation.

To see what I mean, check out one of the fascinating taxi ride tours through the Shankhill and Falls Roads in Belfast!

The 6 counties of Northern Ireland

Guildhall

The counties of Northern Ireland are home to a wealth of history, natural beauty and endless attractions.

Below, you’ll find a quick overview of each.

Rathlin

The most populous of Northern Ireland’s counties, Antrim contains coastal treasures such as Portrush and the Giants Causeway alongside the unique history and cracking pubs of Belfast.

See our guide to the best things to do in Antrim for more.

Armagh

Armagh City

Home to one of Ireland’s greatest scenic drives (the Slieve Gullion Scenic Drive), Armagh is also full of apple orchards and has an incredible cider heritage to explore (and drink!).

See our guide to the best things to do in Armagh for more.

Mourne Mountains

Located directly south of Antrim, no trip to County Down would be complete without a tour of the stunning Mourne Mountains . Don’t miss Tollymore Forest Park and Murlough Beach , also.

See our guide to the best things to do in Down for more.

Marble Arch Caves

Fermanagh might be Northern Ireland’s smallest county by population, but there’s loads to see. Make sure to check out the remarkable Cuilcagh Boardwalk Trail (also known as the Stairway to Heaven!).

See our guide to the best things to do in Fermanagh for more.

Derry has great scenery but definitely kick off your time here in Derry City. Explore its medieval city walls before enjoying a few creamy pints at one of Derry’s many pubs or checking out the Derry Girls mural.

See our guide to the best things to do in Derry for more.

Blessingbourne Tyrone

Photos by Emma Mc Ardle via Ireland’s Content Pool

Northern Ireland’s largest county, Tyrone, is also home to the spectacular Sperrin Mountains. Before you visit them, make sure to check out the lakes and waterfalls of Gortin Glen Forest Park.

The key differences between Northern Ireland and Ireland

There are many differences between Northern Ireland and Ireland , the most notable of which is that they are two separate countries.

Here’s a quick explainer on the ‘main’ differences as of 2023.

Northern Ireland is part of the UK’s political system and has a completely different head of state than the Republic of Ireland. It has a devolved power-sharing government at Stormont but ultimately answers to Westminster (the ROI’s government is in Dublin).

The currency in Ireland is the Euro (EUR), whereas, in Northern Ireland, they use the Pound Sterling (GBP), just like the rest of the UK.

When travelling, it’s always worth having the right currency on you, although it’s generally best just to pay by card.

EU membership

The Brexit Referendum has put the status of Northern Ireland under the microscope like never before. Although the UK is now no longer part of the EU, Northern Ireland shares an open border with the ROI which is a full EU member.

Because of this, NI is still part of the EU single market and customs union at the time of writing, but this is all subject to change.

When driving in Ireland , you’ll notice the signs are bilingual, with the Irish language and English both represented, whereas in Northern Ireland, all road signs are written in the same format that you would see in mainland Britain and are all entirely in English.

Things to do in Northern Ireland

Benone Strand

There are endless places to visit in Northern Ireland .

Below, we’ll take you through some of the main attractions.

Main attractions

Giants Causeway

Northern Ireland is full of things to do, but if it’s your first time here then you’ll want to cross off the heavy hitters first!

The North Antrim Coast is a treasure trove of historic and scenic delights that should probably be your first port of call in Northern Ireland.

The Causeway Coastal Drive is a fine way to explore this stunning part of the world. Make sure you see the Giants Causeway UNESCO World Heritage Site and Dunluce Castle .

Further east are the beautiful Glens of Antrim . Steeped in myth and home to tons of trails, wildlife and stunning views, these glens are the North at its best.

Hikes and walks

Glenariff Forest

Speaking of trails! From the majestic Mourne Mountains in the southeast to the Sperrin Mountains soaring up from the Tyrone and Derry border, Northern Ireland is a walker’s paradise.

There are walks and trails here for everyone, whether you’re an experienced hiker or an absolute beginner.

If you’ve just landed at Belfast, then you can give the nearby Cave Hill a spin or you can travel out to one of the higher peaks.

There are also loads of lovely forest trails to enjoy, so don’t miss the chance to wander amid the likes of Tollymore Forest or Gortin Glen Forest Park.

Belfast Castle

One of the most unique cities in Europe (let alone Ireland!), Belfast’s turbulent history means there are few other cities like it.

And the city now embraces that history with a passion so make sure to take one of the taxi tours to learn a whole lot more from the people who were there and see the colourful murals that dot the neighbourhoods.

Belfast’s street art tours are great, too, and make sure to drop in at Titanic Belfast, an interactive experience exploring the world’s most famous ship (built in Belfast!).

Then settle in at one of the city’s fabulous pubs for a creamy pint (White’s Tavern is a belter and one of Belfast’s oldest). See our guide on things to do in Belfast for more.

Castles galore

Dunluce Castle

If you like towers and turrets, then there are far worse places to be! From picturesque coastal fortresses to crumbling ruins, there are some magnificent castles in Northern Ireland .

Part of the awesome north Antrim coast, Dunluce Castle is probably the most well-known of the coastal castles and is just a few minutes down the road from Portrush.

Perhaps just as evocative is the ruined remains of Dunseverick Castle (which can easily be twinned with a trip to the Giants Causeway!).

Back in Belfast, the elegant Victorian Belfast Castle sits on the lower slopes of Cave Hill and gives cracking views across the city.

Game of Thrones

The Dark Hedges

If you’re a big fan of the popular HBO series, then you’ll probably already know that there are many different Game of Thrones filming locations in Northern Ireland where the ultra-popular TV show was filmed!

The producers gave this part of the world so much attention that there are now a bunch of tours of these filming locations.

But you don’t need to go on an official tour to enjoy some of the show’s famous locations! While you probably won’t have time for them all, make sure to visit Glenariff Forest Park , the Cushendun Caves and, of course, the famous Dark Hedges .

Unique attractions

Carrick-a-Rede

Northern Ireland’s classic attractions are great, but there are a few quirkier attractions if you want to get out of your comfort zone (always a good thing, in our experience!).

The fragile-looking Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge might look scary, but it’s a safe and spectacular crossing on the north Antrim coast that will guarantee some fabulous photographs and memories (and some sweaty palms!).

Along a similar vein are the remarkable Gobbins Cliff Walk and the rugged Torr Head headland.

Back in Belfast, Crumlin Road Gaol is a cracking slice of macabre history with expertly presented tours.

Fancy escaping to some pristine beaches for a ramble or two? Northern Ireland has you covered and offers some fine sands for strolling with the wind in your hair!

Close to the lively seaside town of Portrush, the vast Whiterocks Beach is a superb spot for a wander and a few views. Even better, the proximity to Portrush means you can grab a coffee-to-go and take in the sea breeze – perfect for a morning ramble.

A little further down and famous for being a Game of Thrones filming location, Portstewart Strand is a stunning spot that’s great in any season. With 6,000-year-old sand dunes and tons of curious wildlife, this is far more than your average beach!

FAQs about Northern Ireland

We’ve had a lot of questions over the years asking about everything from ‘What is there to do?’ to ‘Why did they split?’.

Visit the belleek pottery factory, explore the market town of belleek, and meet the craftspeople of its famed porcelain factory.

Promoting over 160 years of craftsmanship, Belleek Pottery – set within a neo-Georgian building in the quaint village of Belleek in County Fermanagh on the banks of the River Erne – is home to Ireland's oldest working fine china pottery. Since 1857, Belleek Pottery has held a very special place in Ireland's cultural and commercial heritage for creating delicate, hand-painted, iridescent porcelain art now famous around the world. Get an inside look at the process and the artisans that produce more than 100,000 pieces of pottery annually – passing through 16 pairs of hands – on your tour of the Belleek factory and museum.

Belfast's Titanic exhibit and a Titanic dinner

Belfast's award-winning titanic museum... followed by a 9-course titanic tasting dinner.

Learn insider stories behind Titanic, designed to be one of the finest ships ever to grace the seas, on your visit to Titanic Belfast, built on the site of the former Queen's Island shipyards that produced the ill-fated liner. J. Bruce Ismay, Chairman of the White Star Line, asked Lord Pirrie of shipbuilders Harland & Wolff to construct "a stable ship that will not disturb the sediment in the fine wines" they were drinking together at a planning meeting. And while Titanic was, according to her builders, "as nearly as perfect as human brains can make her," she proved no match for nature. Discover more in modern-day galleries that bring the legendary ship back to life... and enjoy a 9-course Titanic tasting dinner in the Great Room of The Merchant Hotel.

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally, you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey for entry into Ireland; however, you do not need a visa for the short duration of this tour.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally, you should contact an embassy or consulate of Ireland to determine what travel documentation is required.

Please note that longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Travel Protection Plan

Effective for plans purchased as of July 1, 2021:

Tauck's Guest Protection

Tauck's Guest Protection provides you with cancellation protection before your journey begins as well as insurance benefits while you are traveling. Guest Protection includes the following:

Cancellation Waiver – Provided by Tauck:

Under Tauck's Cancellation Fee Waiver you can cancel your tour for ANY REASON up to the day before departure and receive a money-back refund (except in Extreme Circumstances*) on the land tour cost, based on your original method of payment.

*Extreme Circumstances:  In the event of an act of God, war (whether declared or undeclared), terrorism, accident, natural disaster, outbreak of disease, or other event or circumstance beyond our control that contributes to or results in cancellation rates above our historical cancellation rates in the absence of such event or occurrence, Tauck reserves the right to issue a credit to you in lieu of a money-back refund, applicable to a future Tauck journey.

Travel Insurance Benefits – Underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company.

  • Trip Cancellation –  If you must cancel your tour due to a covered reason, the plan provides coverage for the amount you paid for your travel arrangements. Since the non-insurance cancellation waiver takes care of the land package cancellation fees already, this benefit reimburses the airfare cancellation charges up to the value of your original airfare purchase.
  • Trip Interruption –  If you have to interrupt your tour for covered reasons, the plan provides reimbursement to catch up to your tour or return home.
  • Travel Delay –  Provides reimbursement for missed, prepaid travel arrangements if you are delayed by a common carrier, natural disaster, unannounced strike, or other reasons as cited in the plan.
  • Medical Expense –  Reimburses covered medical expenses incurred in the event you become injured or sick during your trip.
  • Baggage / Personal Effects Protection –  Provides reimbursement in the event your luggage or personal effects are, lost, stolen, damaged or delayed during your trip.
  • Worldwide Emergency Assistance Services –  Provided by Carefree Travel Assistance; 24-hour emergency telephone assistance hotline for medical and travel related problems.

The cost of Tauck's Guest Protection is: $559  per person

This protection provides insurance coverage that applies only during the covered trip. You may have coverage from other sources that provides you with similar benefits but may be subject to different restrictions depending upon your other coverages. You may wish to compare the terms of this policy with your existing life, health, home and automobile policies. If you have any questions about your current coverage, call your insurer, insurance agent or broker.

This optional Guest Protection must be requested at time of booking and fee must be included with initial payment. Fees are based on costs as of July 1, 2021, and are subject to change. Details will be provided with written confirmation of your tour reservation. Guest Protection does not protect travel agent commissions. Reimbursements will be made according to original method of payment. The amount of any refund shall be reduced by any recoveries obtained by you from any third parties.

The Guest Protection plan waives cancellation fees outlined below, provided we are notified of cancellation before your tour departs. Tour cancellation fees are waived regardless of reason, without written notice, and Tauck will refund land tour cost.

To obtain your state-specific Certificate of Insurance that contains the complete terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the certificate, visit  affinitytravelcert.com/docs/TACGPPINTL .

If You Have To Cancel

If you cancel within 10 days of initial deposit Within the first 10 days after you place your initial deposit, you may cancel your reservation for any reason with no cancellation fees. If you cancel more than 10 days after initial deposit Regardless of reason, cancellations result in costly charges from our travel and hotel providers covering penalties and fees incurred by canceling confirmed bookings. These fees vary from tour to tour. Therefore, the following fees apply.

Cancellation Fees with Tauck's Guest Protection Plan:

Loss of Guest Protection fee, per person

Cancellation Fees without Tauck's Guest Protection Plan :

60 days or more before departure = $600 per person

59-8 days before departure = $900 per person

7-1 days before departure = $1500 per person

Time of cancellation will be when notice is received in our Wilton Woods, CT office.

In the event of an unforeseen circumstance beyond our control, Tauck reserves the right to amend the cancellation terms outlined herein.

Note:  All Guests, regardless of residency, who book a Tauck journey have the option of purchasing the Cancellation Waiver provided by Tauck in the event they need to cancel their trip after making their reservations. Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

While drinking water is generally safe at all our hotels, bottled water will be available wherever the local water is not fit to drink. We also provide bottled water on the motor coaches.

If you are interested in sporting activities, many opportunities await you on this particular journey. Golfing is available at Mount Juliet Hotel & Spa, Aghadoe Heights Hotel & Spa, and Lough Erne Resort. You may rent clubs and purchase golf balls but you will have to bring your own footwear. Experience has taught us that the earlier you book your tee time the better – even ahead of your departure! If you decide you would like to play once you have arrived, your Tauck Director will endeavor to honor your request. Tennis facilities are available at several hotels including Mount Juliet Hotel & Spa and Aghadoe Heights Hotel. Fishing is possible at Mount Juliet Hotel & Spa. Horseback riding is available at Mount Juliet Hotel & Spa and Aghadoe Heights Hotel & Spa. You will have the opportunity to swim in the pool at several of the hotels used on this tour. Any expenses incurred in conjunction with these optional activities are at your own expense.

Ireland has introduced a ban on smoking in all enclosed places of work in Ireland. This includes all bars, night clubs, restaurants and hotels. Although the public spaces within the hotel are non-smoking, you may request a smoking guest room at your hotel.

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

If you have a medical condition which might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

VACCINATIONS

If you are a resident of the U.S., no vaccinations are currently required for travel to Ireland. For complete vaccination and inoculation information please contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to obtain information regarding vaccinations that may be required for your journey. The Travelers' Health Section of the CDC operates a 24-hour "Travelers' Health Hotline" at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking here.

If you are a resident of another country, please contact an embassy or consulate of Ireland to determine what vaccination(s) may be required for your travel.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

The Best of Ireland involves a considerable amount of walking. To enjoy this tour, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. The amount of walking you do, however, is at your discretion. The visits to the Cliffs of Moher, Kylemore Abbey and Giant's Causeway are challenging due to the steep climbs and long walks involved in the sightseeing.

Most hotels do not have special handicap access rooms. Mount Juliet Hotel & Spa does not have an elevator but there are guest rooms at ground level.

PLEASE NOTE: We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters. Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs. The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest. Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

The weather in Ireland can be variable, alternating between wet and cool days, and sunny and mild days. The climate is generally moderate throughout the country, tempered by the Atlantic Ocean Gulf Stream. Average high temperatures from April through October range from 55 to 65˚F (13 to 18˚C) and the average low temperatures range from 40 to 55˚F (4 to 13˚C). Ireland, like other European countries, has experienced unusually warm spells in recent summers. Ireland's greenery owes its notoriety to the frequent rainfall.

To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website by clicking here.

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with New Headings who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

The weather in Ireland is moderate. Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing. The Emerald Isle owes its name to its precipitation, so rain is to be expected anytime.

In Europe, especially in finer restaurants, it is generally customary to dress somewhat formally. Slacks or a dress for women and a jacket and tie for men are acceptable dining attire, although it is not required. It is advisable to avoid wearing jeans, sneakers or shorts for dinner. You may also wish to dress up a bit for the welcome reception and the farewell dinner, but by all means be comfortable.

You will find a hair dryer located in your hotel guest room. Irons and ironing boards are available upon request. Valet laundry and dry cleaning services are also available for a fee.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for your trip to Ireland:

  • Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
  • An optional jacket and tie for men
  • Casually elegant evening wear for ladies
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
  • Binoculars (7x50 preferably)
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Lightweight, comfortable, sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm functions (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
  • Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
  • Reusable zipper-lock bags or other waterproof bags
  • Daypack for camera equipment
  • Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling

Extension Style

Best time for travel exploring scotland & ireland.

While just about any month is great to visit Scotland and Ireland, there are a few prime times of the year for the Exploring Scotland & Ireland tour. Here are some recommendations from our destination experts.

Spring: Springtime is a wonderful time to visit the region! The countryside comes alive with flowers and shades of green, and the days of sunlight are growing just a bit longer, giving you more time to explore.

Summer: August is the perfect time to visit Edinburgh, as the Military Tattoo and Edinburgh Festival both take place then. It’s crowded, but the city is alive with many cultural events. And generally, it’s good weather (fingers crossed for not too much rain!).

Fall: Daylight hours grow shorter, and the weather is not quite as hospitable as summer, but the changing colors of the landscape are truly lovely. Fewer crowds make it easier to navigate sites and take your time to enjoy them.

What to know before you go

Only 5 million residents call Ireland home—but an estimated 80 million people of Irish descent span the globe.

Dublin boasts Europe’s largest city green space, the 1,750-acre Phoenix Park, as well as 750 pubs to tuck into.

The Irish weave their tales through literature, music, and dance, and share them with visitors through unmatched hospitality and that famous craic (pronounced “crack”)—the locals’ gift of good banter.

Ireland offers a gentle introduction to international travel with an English-speaking population and a welcoming atmosphere. And that’s before the otherworldly scenery you’ll relish.

Travel tips for Ireland trips

The length of the guided tour of Ireland you choose plays a big factor in what you can see and do. Before choosing, it's helpful to think about which specific sites you’d like to see on your trip. Ireland is a relatively small country and easy to explore, but it can take some time to get around. On our Ireland tours, you can choose a number of different ways to experience the country according to your interests. Here are some of our favorite places to visit in Ireland.

  • Dublin. St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Ireland’s largest, offers beautiful stained glass windows and a rich history. But don’t miss Dublin Castle, Guinness Storehouse, or Trinity College, either.
  • County Tipperary. The Rock of Cashel is a must-see. This group of ancient buildings on a limestone outcrop above the town of Cashel offer a glimpse into Ireland’s medieval history.
  • County Cork. Blarney Castle, home to the famous Blarney Stone, isn’t the only reason to visit County Cork. Ireland’s largest county is also known for having the country’s best food.
  • County Kerry. This region is home to the Ring of Kerry, a 112-mile coastal route that winds through some of Ireland’s most spectacular scenery. Those views are rivaled in Killarney National Park, which is dotted with lakes and dominated by Ireland’s highest mountain, Carrauntoohil.
  • County Clare. The Cliffs of Moher, offering some of the most purely beautiful vistas in all of Ireland, are the big draw here. You can also check out the traditional music scene in the quaint village of Doolin, not far from the cliffs.
  • County Donegal. The towering Slieve League cliffs, rising nearly 2,000 feet above the Atlantic Ocean, are some of the highest in Europe. You won’t find a better place to snap incredible photos.

In the land of cozy pubs, green landscapes, and rich culture, there’s a lifetime of attractions to explore. Here are some of the top sites to visit in Ireland:

  • Ring of Kerry. One of the most scenic drives in Ireland passes through charming villages and treats you to stunning views of the mountains, lakes, and coastline.
  • Grafton Street in Dublin. A great place to experience Irish culture, this vibrant pedestrian street is home to pubs, cafes, high-end boutiques, and souvenir shops.
  • Glendalough. Located in a beautiful valley surrounded by mountains and lakes, Glendalough is home to an ancient monastic settlement founded in the sixth century by Saint Kevin.
  • The Wild Atlantic Way. The western coast of Ireland is home to some of the Emerald Isle’s most magnificent scenery and is a great way to experience the country’s beauty and diversity.
  • Kilkenny Castle. Originally built in 1195, this historic castle is a beautiful example of medieval architecture and offers stunning views from its ramparts.
  • Cliffs of Moher. This nearly nine-mile stretch of towering sea cliffs is breathtaking when the rushing waves of the Atlantic Ocean crash against the coastline.
  • Dublin Castle. Once the seat of British power in Ireland, the castle is now a popular tourist destination and houses a number of museums and art galleries.
  • St. Patrick’s Cathedral. The largest cathedral in Ireland, and one of the largest in Europe, is known for its beautiful stained glass windows.
  • The Dingle Peninsula. Our trips to the Dingle Peninsula allow you to get to know this incredible part of Ireland, from scenic drives with views of the coastline to the charming, colorful town of Dingle.

Several of our tours will take you from Ireland to Northern Ireland. The island of Ireland is separated into two jurisdictions. The Republic of Ireland is an independent country, while Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom. As such, you’ll use the pound sterling (GBP) when you cross over into Northern Ireland. While there is no physical border, it’s important to remember that they are two separate countries.

Some of our favorite activities in Northern Ireland include visiting:

  • Giant’s Causeway.  This jaw-dropping geological site is made up of 40,000 basalt columns formed by volcanic activity more than 50 million years ago.
  • The Titanic Museum. A dramatic tribute located in Belfast, where the famed ship was designed, built, and launched.

The best time of year to go on a tour of Ireland depends on your preferences. The summer months (June to August) are generally the warmest and most popular, but they can also be the busiest and most expensive. The spring (March to May) and fall (September to November) months are less crowded and can offer more affordable prices. Winter (December to February) can be cold and rainy, but it can also be a good time to visit if you want to experience the festive holiday season.

Thanks to the Gulf Stream, Ireland has a temperate climate. Typically, the summers are warm and the winters are mild. No matter what time of year you visit Ireland, be sure to pack a raincoat or umbrella. The weather there can be unpredictable, so it’s always a good idea to be prepared for rain.

  • March, April, and May. Many consider spring the best time to go to Ireland. Ireland’s weather in March includes drizzles of rain and longer days. With spring flowers blooming and Saint Patrick’s Day celebrations in full swing, this is a great time to travel on any of our tours to Ireland.
  • June, July, and August. Summer in Ireland isn’t scorching hot like many other parts of the world. The temperature in August and throughout the summer rarely breaks 70 F. With flora at its greenest, summer is considered one of the best times of year to visit.
  • September, October, and November. Ireland’s fall weather brings mild days in the 50s. With summer tourists home, the lush hills still green, and all top attractions still open, fall comes highly recommended as one of the best times to book any of our Ireland trip packages.
  • December, January, and February. The weather in Ireland is mild compared to many other parts of the world during winter. It rarely snows, and the temperatures in Ireland can reach up to 60 degrees. You will need to pack a coat, but the hearty stews of Ireland taste even better with a chill in the air. Local traditions and fewer crowds make this one of the best times to visit.

One trip isn’t enough to experience all that Ireland has to offer. From visiting rolling sheep-dotted hills to lively centuries-old towns, sunny beaches to vertigo-inducing cliffs, there’s so much to do and see on group tours of Ireland. Some of the most popular activities include:

  • Listening to traditional Irish music. A “trad session”—a loosely organized, sometimes impromptu live performance—at an old-fashioned pub is the best way to go.  Our favorite pubs in Ireland  will do the trick.
  • Driving the Wild Atlantic Way.  True to its name, this winding, 1,550-mile route along Ireland’s western coastline is rugged and untamed. But the  Wild Atlantic Way  has more than just scenic views. Between long stretches of natural splendor are little clifftop villages and seaside towns and cities that offer a window into the Irish way of life.
  • Walking along the Cliffs of Moher. Offering uninterrupted views of the Aran Islands from hundreds of feet above the Atlantic Ocean, these cliffs are a longtime favorite among travelers who have gone on our tours.
  • Learning how to pour the perfect pint. A visit to the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin involves more than enjoying a pint of Ireland’s favorite beer. You can also learn the six-step ritual for pouring a Guinness, including what type of glass to use and the perfect temperature for pouring.
  • Touring the Kilmainham Gaol . First opened in 1796, this infamous jail once held Nelson Mandela, among other revolutionaries and political prisoners. A tour offers a sobering, fascinating window into Ireland’s history.
  • Exploring the medieval town of Kilkenny.  Walking the central Medieval Mile will have you feeling like a time traveler. Don’t miss the nearby ancient hilltop fortress, the Rock of Cashel.
  • Kissing the Blarney Stone. Millions of pilgrims have climbed the Blarney Castle's steps, leaned backward, and kissed the legendary stone in hopes of gaining the gift of gab. Thanks to the installation of an iron railing, you no longer have to be held by the ankles and lowered down to kiss the stone.
  • Traveling around the Ring of Kerry.  This 112-mile coastal route winds through some of Ireland’s most spectacular scenery, including Killarney National Park.

Ten amazing things to do in Ireland →

Ireland is a friendly and welcoming country. The Irish people are known for their warm hospitality and their love of conversation. They are also known for their sense of humor and their love of music and dance. Still, it’s helpful to be aware of their customs and etiquette while visiting Ireland.

  • Greetings. When greeting someone in Ireland, it’s customary to shake hands.
  • Phrases to know. “What’s the craic?” (pronounced “crack”) is how the Irish ask, “What’s up?” At a pub, ask for a “pint of gat”—that is, a pint of Guinness. And to toast the new friends you’ll undoubtedly make in Ireland, say “sláinte!” (pronounced “SLAWN-cha”).
  • Tipping. Though not expected in Ireland, tipping is appreciated. A tip of 10% is considered appropriate for good service.
  • Be punctual. Punctuality is important in Ireland, and being late is considered rude.
  • Dress appropriately. Ireland is a relatively casual country, but it’s still important to dress appropriately for the occasion. For example, you wouldn’t want to wear shorts and a T-shirt to a nice restaurant.
  • Learn a few basic Irish phrases. Even if you don’t speak much Irish, it’s always appreciated when visitors learn a few basic phrases. This shows that you’re making an effort to connect with the local culture.
  • Politics. Ireland has a long and complicated history, and politics can be a sensitive topic. It's best to avoid discussing politics with people you don’t know well.
  • Be respectful of culture and customs. Ireland is a diverse country with a rich culture, and it’s important to be respectful of their customs and beliefs.

We recommend you spend at least six days in Ireland. While our most popular Ireland tours run nine days or more, you can enjoy a shorter trip if you limit your tour to one or two cities.

English is Ireland’s main language, and all native Irish people can speak English. However, you’ll also see some signs and place names in Irish Gaelic.

Ireland uses the euro.

To stock up on local currency, order some euros from your bank before you go, or use your debit card at an ATM once you arrive. For tips on using the euro while on our trips to Ireland, check out our blog on currency exchange →

Traditional Irish cuisine is comforting and hearty. And, yes, many dishes are made with potatoes, which are a staple crop in Ireland. But the real joy in Irish food is enjoying it along with good company in the local pub or restaurant. While you’ll find plenty of great food in Ireland’s major cities, here are some traditional dishes to savor while on our Ireland tours:

  • Irish stew.  This hearty stew is made with lamb, potatoes, carrots, onions, and other vegetables. It’s typically cooked in a slow cooker or on the stovetop until the meat is tender and the flavors have melded together.
  • Soda bread. This traditional Irish bread uses baking soda instead of yeast as a leavening agent, giving it a slightly sour flavor that’s balanced by the sweetness of the buttermilk. Topped with butter and jam, it’s a great accompaniment to soups, salads, and stews.
  • Boxty.  The Irish version of the fried potato pancake was originally made to use up leftover potatoes. The key to its trademark consistency is finely grated potato mixed with flour and buttermilk. Enjoy it plain or topped with bacon, cheese, or eggs.
  • Scones. Rich, buttery Irish scones (pronounced “scons” locally) may be the best you’ve ever tasted. They’re made with fresh, high-quality ingredients, including stone-ground flour, Irish butter, and buttermilk. They’re often paired with homemade jam, clotted cream, or butter.
  • Shepherd’s pie.  You’ll find this hearty baked pie at nearly every pub in Ireland. The popular (and delicious!) comfort food is made with a mix of ground lamb and vegetables, topped with mashed potatoes and cheese.
  • Fish and chips.  This classic dish, and popular fast-food option, is made with fried fish and french fries. It’s best enjoyed by popping into a pub for some conversation with locals as you dig into your meal.
  • Guinness.  Brewed in Dublin, Guinness is known for its smooth, creamy texture and its roasted, chocolatey flavor. At pubs all over Ireland, they’ll pour it correctly to create its iconic creamy head. It’s a beer that pairs well with Irish food—especially fish and chips.

Even though the weather can be quite unpredictable, we recommend packing light for our trips to Ireland. One suitcase and one carry-on per person is a good guideline to follow; you should feel comfortable managing your baggage at the airport. After you’ve booked one of our tour packages, we’ll give you information about how to prepare for your particular trip and even share a packing list in our mobile app.

  • Layers.  We recommend packing lots of layers to accommodate varying temperatures, as well as a light jacket or rainwear.
  • Travel umbrella. You’ll appreciate having a packable umbrella handy in case of spot showers.
  • Comfortable walking shoes.  Since you’ll be doing a lot of walking while on our guided tours to Ireland, a comfortable pair of walking shoes, sneakers, or boots is essential to have. Those walking shoes will come in handy in a country best explored on foot.
  • Dressier attire.  You may want to pack dressier attire if you plan to visit a high-end restaurant or attend a special performance.
  • Sun protection.  For all our trips, especially during the summer months in Ireland, we recommend bringing sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to protect your face and the back of your neck.
  • An RFID money belt or wallet.  These are always a great idea when traveling internationally, especially through airports and crowded city streets. Radio-frequency identification (RFID) can protect your credit card info from electronic theft, and a money belt will conceal your cash without ruining your outfit.

Once you’ve reserved one of our Ireland tour packages, we’ll send you detailed information about what to bring with you. Don’t forget to download the  Go Ahead Tour companion app  before you take off, so you’ll have all the info you need about your trip right in your pocket.

Updated December 2023 —Is Ireland on your vacation itinerary in 2024?

irelandonabudget.com

Here are 10 places I think you should include as you plan your Ireland itinerary.

Table of Contents

It goes without saying that most visitors to Ireland end up in Dublin at some stage during their vacation.

And while it’s small compared to other European capitals, there’s a lot to unpack there.

If you’re on a budget, Dublin has a range of free museums to explore.

irelandonabudget.com

The Decorative Arts & History Museum at Collins Barracks (the oldest military barracks in Ireland) is one of my favorites.

If you want to get a real feel for Ireland’s history and culture — and if you’ve only got time for one museum on your visit — this is one you should check out.

Among the museum’s permanent displays is the exhibition titled “Soldier and Chiefs – The Irish at War at Home and Abroad from 1550 to the Present Day.”

Original artifacts, letters, and replicas are part of the more than 1,000 objects that combine to showcase how soldiering and warfare have affected the lives of Irish people, both at home and abroad.

If you’re from the U.S., you might want to know more about the Irish men who served both on the Confederate and Union sides of the American Civil War, and if you’re from Britain or elsewhere in Europe, their participation in World War I will certainly be of interest.

irelandonabudget.com

Taking a Hop on Hop off bus that includes all the city’s main attractions is a good choice if you want to save time getting from one attraction to the other.

However, I feel that the Dublin Pass is better value – especially if you’re watching your pennies.

The pass gets you into many of Dublin’s top attractions all for one sweet price.

irelandonabudget.com

Some of those include The Guinness Storehouse, EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum, the Jameson Bow St. Distillery Tour, and Dublinia, to name a few.

At night, Dublin comes alive and for the tourist, there’s plenty of entertainment to choose from, including an exploration of the city’s popular Temple Bar region.

If you’re looking for something a bit cozier, I'd recommend Candlelit Tales , a night of storytelling and live music, which can be found in pubs around Dublin.

Expect to hear stories of Ireland’s mythological hero Cúchulainn as well as the female warrior Queen Maeve.

Explore Ireland on an Aer Lingus Vacation

If cobbled streets and oodles of history at every corner are your cup of tea, I always tell tourists to Ireland that Kilkenny should definitely be on their itinerary.

Once the medieval capital of Ireland, Kilkenny has a rich heritage, and its popular Medieval Mile Trail reflects that.

irelandonabudget.com

The trail starts in the Medieval Mile Museum , worth seeing too, and includes stops at the architecturally beautiful 16 th -century Rothe House , Richard Shee’s Alms House, and Kyteler’s Inn.

The Smithwick’s Brewery, founded in 1710, is also on the tour.

irelandonabudget.com

No visit to Kilkenny is complete without seeing Kilkenny Castle , once the seat of the powerful Butler family.

To complete your Kilkenny experience, I'd recommend you take a ghost tour .

The Aran Islands

Catching Martin McDonagh’s runaway 2022 flick, The Banshees of Inisherin will give you an introduction to the beautiful Aran Islands .

Scenes from the movie were filmed on Inishmore, the largest island, which is about a 45-minute ferry ride from the mainland.

The budget-friendly option for getting to the Aran Islands is by ferry from either the Galway City Docks (between April and September only) or year-round from Rossaveal.

You can also take a tour from Galway that takes in the Cliffs of Moher, something I recommend if you're short on time and you want to squeeze in both of these Top 10 attractions in Ireland.

Most first-time visitors choose Inishmore as their introduction to this gorgeous slice of heaven along the Wild Atlantic Way .

The best way to see Inishmore or the other two islands, Inishmaan and Inisheer, is to rent a bicycle.

irelandonabudget.com

If you’re not up for that, there are several other ways to get around the island. They include seeing it on a minibus tour, by pony and trap, or on the Aran Off-Road Experience .

It’s hard to imagine Ireland’s ancient people living in a rocky, windswept landscape like The Burren but there is evidence that they did just that from the large megalithic monuments they left behind.

irelandonabudget.com

Making your way to the Burren National Park is relatively easy if you are already in the West of Ireland.

From Galway , it is a 1-hour drive.

In feel that the best way to see this unique piece of Ireland is to take The Burren Scenic Drive, a 100-mile (150 km) journey that begins in Ballyvaughan.

The route takes you through places like Lisdoonvarna, Doolin, The Cliffs of Moher, Lahinch, Ennistymon, Corofin, and of course, the Burren National Park .

irelandonabudget.com

Along the way, be sure to stop in the Aillwee Birds of Prey Centre , the Doolin Cave, the Poulnabrone Dolmen mentioned above, Father Ted’s House, the Caherconnell Stone Fort, and The Burren Perfumery , where you will find organically based cosmetics and perfumes inspired by the surrounding landscape.

When my kids were younger, they really enjoyed the Aillwee Birds of Prey attraction, especially the fact that they got to see the birds up close.

The Boyne Valley

If you really want to get to the heart of ancient Ireland, The Boyne Valley is one place that you should add to your Ireland vacation itinerary.

The region, often known as “Ireland’s Ancient East,” is within easy driving distance of Dublin — either by rental car or by tour bus — and is brimming with historical sites, the most impressive of which is Newgrange, part of the Brú na Bóinne complex .

The 5,000-year-old complex contains two other large passage tombs, including Knowth and Dowth.

a passageway surrounded by rocks Newgrange Visitor Center

But it is Newgrange that gets all the attention especially during the Winter Solstice in December when its passage is illuminated by the winter sun through an opening called the roof box, evidence that its builders created it with a sacred purpose in mind.

But there’s so much more to this area than the casual observer might think.

If you really want to sink your teeth into the local history of the area, I recommend a paddle in a traditional Irish currach along the leafy Boyne Canal.

irelandonabudget.com

The tours offered by Boyne Boats take place in traditional, handcrafted Irish currachs, some of which were featured in the blockbuster Game of Thrones series.

Expect a mix of trivia from the show together with real historical facts from the local area that will give you a sense of how Ireland’s ancient people traveled and survived along these waters centuries ago.

Prices start as low as €30 per person.

irelandonabudget.com

Other local attractions include the Battle of the Boyne heritage site in County Louth, the Hill of Tara, as well as the Anglo-Norman Trim and Slane castles, both in County Meath.

The Hidden Heartlands

This region of Ireland stretches all the way from County Leitrim to Limerick and is often overlooked by tourists who are busy traveling from city to coast.

However, if you’re keen to explore Ireland’s longest river The Shannon, and the lakes and abundant nature all around it, then I advise you to add this destination to your to-do list as you plan your Ireland itinerary.

irelandonabudget.com

If children are joining you on your Ireland adventure, the Lough Key Forest & Activity Park in County Roscommon should be on your list.

I remember this fondly as a child during family outings. However, today, there is a lot more to do in this sprawling park.

Expect to find an adventure playground, an indoor puzzle arena known as “Boda Borg” and the opportunity to go ziplining through the forest.

You can also hire bikes, boats, and Segways at Lough Key Forest Park, which is located close to Boyle, the birthplace of Hollywood actor Chris O’Dowd.

Do take a boat trip around McDermott’s Castle located on Castle Island in the middle of Lough Key.

irelandonabudget.com

The castle you see today is a folly built in the 1800s, but it is located on the site of the original structure that belonged to the Mac Diarmada clan, who ruled the surrounding area from the 10 th through 16 th centuries.

Lough Derg is the jewel of The Shannon and if you’ve decide to explore Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands region, you’ll want to take a boat trip on this scenic lake.

The area is not only attractive to tourists who are looking for a slower adventure experience but also to fishermen who flock to the lake for its abundance of wild brown trout and pike.

irelandonabudget.com

If you’re short on time, the 1-hour cruise on the River Shannon and Lough Derg will give you a good introduction to the area.

The cruise, available from March through October, passes by Killaloe, the birthplace of Brian Boru, and St. Flannan’s Cathedral, famous for its Ogham stone carvings.

Cork and Kerry: Between Two Great Peninsulas

It’s hard to totally immerse yourself in the vast beauty of Counties Cork and Kerry if you have limited time.

Between them, the counties are home to five peninsulas – the Beara, the Dingle, the Iveragh, the Mizen, and the Sheep’s Head.

You’d probably need at least a week to do so, but if you only have a couple of days in this region of Ireland, there are some attractions I suggest you not miss as you plan your Ireland itinerary.

ocean and mountains plan your Ireland 2023 itinerary

If anything, Cork’s Beara Peninsula doesn’t reflect the worn paths of tourism like the neighboring Dingle Peninsula, although both, in my opinion, are worth exploring on any trip to southwest Ireland.

The Beara, as it is affectionately called in these parts, is located between Kenmare Bay and Bantry Bay.

The Ring of Beara will be your guide to exploring this beautiful region of West Cork.

an archway in a garden plan your Ireland 2023 itinerary

Some of the attractions you can expect to see along the way include stops at Glengarriff, where you can get the ferry to Garinish Island , where the most unusual of plants exist, in addition to Dursey Island , where Ireland’s only cable car is located, the colorful town of Kenmare (actually in County Kerry), and much, much more.

Of the above, Garinish Island remains my favorite destination in this region.

The Dingle Peninsula is no doubt more trafficked but still worth seeing.

colorful buildings in a town choosing accommodation in Ireland

The town of Dingle is a great base for any exploration of this popular region.

Once a sleepy seaside village, today, Dingle is considered bohemian and quite artistic, and not only attracts tourists but people from around the world who choose to live in this westernmost part of Ireland.

Some of the attractions to see on this well-worn route include the Gallarus Oratory, Dunbeg Fort, the Fahan Beehive Huts, the Blasket Centre , and the Blasket Islands .

A Northern Ireland Road Trip

I'll continue to rave about Northern Ireland, with its stunning coastline, as a worthwhile addition to your vacatio itinerary.

Apart from the popular attractions like Titanic Belfast, the Giant’s Causeway , the Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge, and Dunluce Castle, all on the Causeway Coast, there are other attractions that are more inland and that you might want to check out while you’re visiting the province.

The Ulster American Folk Park lies in the heart of the Northern Ireland countryside, near Omagh, County Tyrone.

If your ancestors left this part of Northern Ireland during the 18 th and 19 th centuries, this open-air museum will be of particular interest as you plan your Ireland itinerary.

You’ll find about 30 historic buildings in the park, where costumed characters demonstrate tasks that were common during that time period.

Parts of the park are devoted to the Old World and the New World, with a full-size replica of an immigrant ship as well as an American street scene right out of the state of Virginia.

Some of the best views in Northern Ireland can be found from the Cliffs of Magho located on the edge of the Lough Navar Forest in County Fermanagh .

The steep 200-meter (close to 700 feet) climb to the summit, which includes 370 steps at the beginning, is not for the faint-hearted but is certainly doable given the number of rest stops along the way.

The views are totally worth it, though, as you can the Antrim coast to the north and the Blue Stack Mountains in County Donegal to the west from the top of the cliffs.

The Wild Atlantic Way: From Donegal to Galway

The Wild Atlantic Way is a 1,500-mile coastal road on Ireland’s western seaboard that has grown in popularity in recent years.

To complete the entire route comfortably would take at least a few weeks. But if you have a few days to spare, it is definitely worthwhile.

The distance from Donegal to Galway is about 126 miles (202 kilometers) and in between, you’ll find a multitude of attractions worth seeing.

They include the Slieve League Cliffs, the second highest in the country, and to be honest, less touristy than the smaller Cliffs of Moher.

There are two hiking paths that lead to the summit of the cliffs, the One Man’s Pass and the Pilgrim’s Path.

However, if you are afraid of heights, the safest place to savor the views from the cliffs is the Bunglass Viewing Platform, which is close to the visitor center.

Other notable attractions on the route from Donegal to Galway include Downpatrick Head off the coast of County Mayo.

The giant sea stack, which is situated a little way from the coastline, stands 150 feet tall (45 meters).

Despite the many legends that have been told about its formation, the most valid explanation is that an arch leading to the stack broke away during a violent storm in 1393.

When you’re in the area, I'd recommend you visit the Ceide Fields Visitor Centre , an archaeological site that is the most extensive Neolithic site in Ireland, containing field systems that are at least 6,000 years old.

Ireland’s Sunny Southeast – Waterford, Wexford, and Wicklow

Ireland’s east coast — while not quite as rugged as its western coastline — is equally beautiful and there’s a lot on offer here, particularly in the coastal counties of Waterford, Wexford, and Wicklow.

Wicklow’s proximity to Dublin is helpful for tourists who won’t have a rental car.

There are several day tours out of Dublin that explore the Wicklow National Park the Glendalough Monastic Site , and other attractions.

Glendalough is one of the most important religious sites in Ireland and in my opinion, a must-see in this region. The 6 th -century monastery, founded by St. Kevin, was raided several times by the Vikings.

Most of the buildings that you’ll see date from the 10 th through 12 th centuries. They include the round tower, the cathedral, St. Kevin’s Church, the Priest House, Trinity Church, and much more.

Waterford’s Copper Coast has a fascinating combination of geological and industrial heritage, which can be found in its UNESCO Global Geopark, between Tramore and Dungarvan, both on the Waterford coast.

Call it an outdoor museum if you like, with a spectacular coastline that evolved over 460 million years, resulting in numerous rocky coves and headlands, sea stacks, arches, and blow holes.

Further inland, Waterford City’s Viking Triangle is the main highlight of Ireland’s oldest city.

About 11 miles (17 km) from the Copper Coast, there’s a lot to take in, including the Medieval Museum; the Bishop’s Palace; the French Church, a former Franciscan friary founded in the 13th century; and Reginald’s Tower, collectively known as the “Waterford Treasures.”

Wexford to the north has its own unique heritage and is famous for playing an influential role in the fight for Irish independence.

You can find out more about that failed rebellion by visiting the Vinegar Hill Battlefield in Enniscorthy.

Approximately 20,000 men, women, and children faced 10,000 members of the Crown’s forces in a battle that was only 4 hours long, with 1,500 left dead on the battlefield.

A notable attraction on Wexford’s coastline is the Hook Head Lighthouse , a place where invaders and fortune-seekers have found themselves over the centuries.

Day 2: titanic belfast & belfast city tour, day 2 itinerary.

After some much-needed sleep and a hearty full Irish breakfast, we will depart for Northern Ireland. The province of Northern Ireland was created with the partition of the island of Ireland in 1921.

Your destination today will be Belfast City , the only city in Ireland to fully experience the Industrial Revolution. Linen, rope making, tobacco and most famously shipbuilding including the building of the Titanic Belfast on the Harland & Wolff shipyard, were the main industries. The Troubles took their toll on the economic life of Belfast, but the past fifteen years of peace have returned much prosperity, while the genuine friendliness of the city never left.

Travelling north, your route today will take you through County Meath & County Louth. On arrival in Belfast, visit the Titanic Belfast . The world’s largest Titanic-themed visitor attraction, located on the very slipways where she was built in the heart of Belfast. In the afternoon, enjoy a tour of Belfast City with a specialised step on local Belfast City Guide to see and hear all about the history of this once troubled city — including the Belfast Murals of the Loyalist Shankill Road and Nationalist Falls Road.

Tonight you will overnight & dine at the Clayton Hotel Belfast in Belfast City .

Our route today will take you via the spectacular Antrim Coastal Route through the nine Glens of Antrim and picturesque villages of Ballygalley, Carnlough, Cushendall and Cushendun to Ballycastle. Continue onto Bushmills.

Here you will visit the Bushmills Distillery . Known around the world as the oldest licensed distillery. We will stop here for a whiskey tasting. Its grant to distil whiskey was given in 1608, but it is believed that the spirit was probably made here 200 years before that!

Further north, on the coast, you will visit Giant's Causeway . This prehistoric geological phenomenon is the subject of many myths and legends. There are an estimated 37,000 basalt columns extending from cliffs down into the sea.

This afternoon you will continue west to Derry/Londonderry City for an overnight stay at the Maldron Hotel Derry . Dine at the hotel tonight.

Your route will take you via Strabane and Omagh in County Tyrone, to the Ulster American Folk Park . An open-air museum located on the restored boyhood home of Judge Thomas Mellon, founder of the Pittsburgh banking dynasty. The Park's permanent exhibition, called 'Emigrants', examines why two million people left Ulster for America during the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries.

The route will take you through Meath, known as the Royal County due to its history as the seat of the High King of Ireland. Your last stop today will be at Trim Castle . The largest Anglo-Norman castle in Ireland. Hugh de Lacy and his son Walter built it over a 30-year period and finished it in 1206. Trim Castle was also a film location for the movie "Braveheart".

we did the discover northern Ireland tour on September 6Th Coln Clarke was the Bus tour guide /driver he was wonderful very knowledgeable about Irish history he also had a great sense of humor the trip was great the hotels ,meals and services was top notch the Tours in Belfast , the walking tours of Derry all gave a insight to the troubled times the tours of the titanic memorial was super all in all well worth the price and would recommend this trip

Robin Henry

We took the Northern Ireland tour this time and to our amazement, Colm Clarke was again our driver and guide. It truly felt like returning to see old friends. The tour was great, again Colm was so and made things so fun. Our guide in Belfast, Nollaig, was full of information and kept things lively even while talking about things like The Troubles. In Derry, our guide was Theresa, again a knowledgeable and passionate guide. We loved Bushmill's and Giant's Causeway. The Lough Erne Cruise and the trip to Devinish Island was almost magical with the mist rising up off the river as the sun got higher. Shannon set us up with a private tour from our wish list after Northern Ireland and it was everything we could have hoped for. We got to stay in the places we wanted to explore, stayed at great placed and the food was unbelievable good. We saw a lot in 6 days - Kilkenny Castle, Cobh and the Titanic Museum and the statue of Annie Moore, then on to Kinsale and the Lusitania Museum and Old Head, all the shops (such wonderful little hidden gems. Then we went to Dingle Peninsula and spent 2 days in a delightful BNB and explored. Our last days, we revisited the Cliffs of Moher and then to Galway and a day on the largest Aran Island. We couldn't have asked for a better day - water calm, no wind, and sunny. Our driver and Guide, Pat C. was great. He stopped for photos and had suggestions for others, always made sure we were well settled in our hotels and knew his stuff. Thanks for making our trip to Ireland, once again, a delightful and experience packed trip. We'll be back!

This is my second tour with this company. I did the Northern Ireland tour in September and Colm was the guide driver of the bus. He brought Irish history alive. The additional guides we had in Belfast and Derry were fabulous sharing their knowledge of these two cities and 'The Troubles'. Great hotels and meals also included in the tour. I would recommend this company and this tour.

Northern Ireland tour was great!

Steve Warfield

We took the Northern Ireland tour in early July 2023, and it was a fantastic experience. Setting aside the fantastic price, our tour bus was spacious, clean, and, comfortable, as were all our hotel accomodations. The breakfasts and dinners were consistently excellently tasting, and there were numerous choices for both. Our driver/tour guide, George, was definitely one of the best we have experienced in our travels, as he was personable, highly knowledgeable, and a very skilled driver. The excursions were included in the tour price (as was the lodging and morning/evening meal) and there was more than enough time at each location to do some exploring after the day had come to an end.

October 2022  •  Discover Northern Ireland

My husband and I travelled to Northern Ireland with My Ireland Tours in September 2022. Our driver/tour guide, Garey, provided very concise instructions as well as informative commentary every step of the way. We had two interesting activities every day. While I booked the tour primarily for the Giants Causeway, every part of the trip provided us with fabulous scenery. The drive along the Antrim coast was spectacular. The Step-on Guides in Belfast and Derry were very informative, as they helped us to understand the turmoil in their cities. The travel between each stop was reasonable and we always arrived at our final destination in good time. Having our breakfast and evening meal included in our tour simplified everything. Lunch stops included the Titanic Experience, the Giants Causeway and the Ulster American Folk Park. We cannot praise Garey enough for the way he took charge of our group and his amazing talent for maneuvering the full-size coach. It would have been a far more stressful journey if we had attempted to do it on our own. The ease with which our booking was managed was also great. Kevin kept us posted on the payment deadline and ensured that our arrival and departure information was complete. Although we arrived two days early, he arranged for us to remain in the same room when we joined the tour group. If you haven't been to Ireland before I would highly recommend using My Ireland Tours. Your vacation will be trouble free.

July 2022  •  Discover Northern Ireland

In the past five years I have used My Ireland Tour twice, and they do not disappoint. First you can design your own itinerary, if you desire, if you do they will help you with suggestions, that will enhance your trip. They will book you into hotels that have great reputations, sometimes even 5 star at a reasonable trip cost. Last, they provide well respected tour guide drivers in great coaches. A great tour guide/driver makes all the difference in a tour. The most recent tour of Northern Ireland with driver guide Raymond Wilson was truly a great experience. The support and communication with the office staff was always helpful and professional. I would never consider a trip to Ireland without using My Ireland Tours.

May 2022  •  Discover Northern Ireland

Delayed by the pandemic, we've finally been able to take our THIRD tour with My Ireland Tour. This time we went to Northern Ireland and the experience was as wonderful, if not more so, than our previous two tours. As has been the case in all of our previous tours with My Ireland Tours, the superb service came into play even before our trip began. The staff provided all of the assistance we needed to arrange our journey and guided us skillfully through all of the new processes and procedures for travel. The tour itself was absolutely delightful! Our driver / guide, Garey, was knowledgeable and entertaining. He demonstrated great skill driving the coach on the sometimes narrow roads of the countryside and through the congestion and tight quarters on the cities. The schedule provided ample time to enjoy each of the sites that we visited and the walking tour of Derry was a highlight of the tour. We continue to prefer My Ireland Tour because of the value for money, excellent customer service, well crafted tours, smaller group sizes and superb driver / guides. When it comes time for our fourth visit, we won't look to any other tour company for our travel needs!

My very first trip with my ireland tours..booked a northern Ireland tour with them..was a little apprehensive as being a single elderly lady traveling on my own was not sure how it would be..I can't tell you it was one of the best tours I have taken..from the very start..the prompt interaction with eric via email was very reasureing as all my questions were answered promptly..it was good to be met by our guide/driver Garry at dublin airport..after that it was smooth sailing all the way to Northern Ireland! He took good care of us and gave us a full insight into the Irish way of life with stories and historical details of the places we visited..we were kept at very good comfortable hotels each night..all in all..a great memorable trip..will definitely book with them again..many thanks

Our experience with our My Ireland tour of Northern Ireland was very good. We appreciated the well planned itinerary, which included interesting stops as well as some down time each day. We will take a piece of Northern Ireland home with us in our hearts.

March 2019  •  Discover Northern Ireland

What a marvelous experience! My husband and I were on the 5 day Northern Ireland tour from March 20-25, 2019 and enjoyed every minute of it! Our tour guide, Nigel O'Connor, was so professional and attentive to the group, always conscious of our schedule for the day but also allowing for slight changes as necessary. For example, two guests wanted to attend St. Michael's early mass one morning and that request was accommodated with an alternate pick up location for them. Thanks so much for a terrific, memorable vacation!

October 2018  •  Discover Northern Ireland

On our 24 day trek through the UK, Chuck and I picked up the Northern Ireland Tour through My Ireland Tours at the Belfast Titanic and continued on with the group of 26. Our driver /guide Nigel was entertaining and knowledgable about the history of the area we travelled through and answered questions for us. The countryside was spectacular, the people of Ireland warm and welcoming and the bus family entertaining. This was our first group trip in our 64 years and we both enjoyed leaving the thinking to a well organized company to do that for us for part of our trip. Cead Mile Failte is just one Gaelic saying we learned, but to all of you Go Raibh Maith Agat.

July 2018  •  Discover Northern Ireland

What a great tour. We were fortunate enough to meet our daughter and son-in-law for the Northern Ireland tour. The weather was great, the food was good, and the scenery was fantastic. Our driver guide was David Breen. His knowledge and driving skills were brilliant. He was patient, informative, and funny. Not mentioned on the website is an included train ride along the coast from Coleraine to Derry-beautiful. We met some very nice people on our tour, as well as in the places we visited.

We took a tour of Northern Ireland, and it was wonderful! Harry (the hat) our tour guide and bus driver was very good. He was knowledgeable, had a great sense of humor, and was totally unflappable. The tour guide we had in Derry (Ronan) was also very good during our walking tour. The hotels were great - very nice rooms and meals. Although, the menu offerings at each hotel were either the same or very similar so we were definitely ready for something else by the end of the tour. We will definitely utilize this tour company again!

For example, two guests wanted to attend St. Michael's early mass one morning and that request was accommodated with an alternate pick up location for them. The tour was just the right pace with drives no more than 2 hours at a time with an opportunity to stop and stretch once during the drive. The sites we visited were beyond our expectations... Titanic museum in Belfast, Giants Causeway, Derry/Londonderry wall tour, boat tour on Loche Erne, and Trim Castle were all highlights. Our accommodations and the meals were exceptional every night. Thanks so much for a terrific, memorable vacation!

I usually travel on my own with friends, but this Northern Ireland tour was way beyond my expectations. Nigel was an excellent tour guide and Peter, our guide in Derry, explained everything for me about The Troubles and how the area has moved forward. All the hotels were top notch, and plenty of choices for breakfast and dinner. I especially liked the train ride from Coleraine to Derry. I chatted with a Irish woman on her way home from work. The people on this tour were so friendly and fun to be with on each of the outings and we had wonderful conversations at meal times. I highly recommend this tour and My Ireland Tour.

We were thrilled with our Northern Ireland Tour thanks to our fantastic guide and driver, Barry Loe. He took excellent care of us and provided great information. We highly recommend both the tour and Barry to anyone considering touring Northern Ireland. Also, there were only 12 of us on the tour, making it a great experience.

After a lot of research with different tour companies, we decided to book the 6 day Discover Northern Ireland tour with .My Ireland Tour.. It was well worth it. Very well organised from the moment we were picked up from the airport. All local guides that the company used were amazing, as we were also pleased with our driver/guide Roy. The sights were well chosen, and the country is absolutely fascinating. It was a wonderful trip, also because we got to meet other group members from all over the world.

About your Tour Guide

45% of our reviews mention their tour guide by name

Perhaps the most vital ingredient of any tour is your tour guide. Acting not only as your guide but also as your driver, their knowledge and experience, passion and personality form the foundation on which any successful tour is built.

That's why we only work with the very best guides in Ireland. As our past guests know, our tour guides are a big reason why we're Ireland's best-rated tour operator, with 1289 five-star reviews out of a possible 1325.

Irish born and bred

All of our driver-guides were born in Ireland and have lived here all their lives. What's more, they are passionate about our country, its culture and its heritage.

Qualified and experienced

Our driver-guides are qualified, experienced professionals who are committed to impeccable customer care and making your vacation memorable for all the right reasons.

Experts in Irish history & culture

Our driver-guides are true experts in their field. Their knowledge of Irish history, culture (and where to get the best pint of Guinness) is second to none.

Committed to your safety and care

Your safety and comfort are paramount to us and to all our driver-guides. All our guides are experienced coach drivers with impeccable safety records.

Tour accommodation

The hotels on this tour offer amazing quality and value to match. We are very selective in getting just the right accommodation for each specific tour, and we are very proud of the selection of hotels we have put together. Some of these hotels are family-owned, just like ourselves, and we have a long-standing relationship with them all.

Tour Vehicles

On a tour vacation, the journey can be just as important as the destination. That's why our tour buses are all of the highest standards, both in terms of luxury and reliability.

We choose our tour vehicles carefully. All our tour buses offer plenty of space to spread out, tinted windows, air conditioning and on-board fridges. It's what you should expect.

We deliberately leave some seats empty. In fact, we use 34-seater coaches, but limit the number of participants to 26. That's because we want all of our guests to be able to spread out, relax and enjoy the journey. This smaller group size is a core principle in our tours.

Please note: the bus shown in the gallery is one of the 34-seater coaches used on our tours for max. 26 guests. For any reason, should one of these become unavailable for your tour, we will endeavour to provide an equally luxurious and comfortable touring bus.

Destination Brief: Why Northern Ireland is the Next Must-Visit Incentive Destination

Rich in natural beauty, a proud and vibrant cultural heritage, warm hospitality with unique and luxurious accommodations and venues; Northern Ireland should be on your radar as the next must-visit incentive travel destination.

This content was produced in partnership with a Skift Meetings sponsor.

The Incentive Research Foundation reports that incentive travel is growing as a significant factor for recruiting, retaining, and motivating top talent. Given that, it’s worth knowing what incentive qualifiers actually want — and the data may surprise you a bit.

In 2022, IRF found that nearly two-thirds of their survey respondents reported increased interest in traveling to remote areas with luxury accommodations. In 2023, the IRF uncovered another strong trend: “Incentive travel is expected to be fresh and exciting, with 71% of our respondents indicating an increased demand for new destinations not used before,” said Stephanie Harris, IRF President.

Few destinations meet this bill better than Northern Ireland. Offering exhilarating immersive experiences, top-notch amenities, dynamic yet walkable cities, and gorgeous natural environments, it is guaranteed to delight and inspire. Moreover, Northern Ireland has the advantage of combining all these elements within a short distance of one another, making it the ideal setting for a “town and country” incentive trip creating a balanced and diverse experience of both urban and rural environments.

Both incentive planners and event organizers can benefit from Northern Ireland’s industry-leading sustainability measures, state-of-the-art venues, and luxurious offerings at an affordable price — not forgetting their renowned ‘Giant Spirit’ of warmth and hospitality. Finally, there is a continued investment in developing the destination, with approximately $1.5 billion funneling into exciting new attractions and experience projects to ensure it is competing with some of the top incentive destinations around the world .

Access & Amenities: Easy Travel & Transportation

Getting to and around northern ireland has never been easier.

Ideally, an incentive trip should be relaxing from start to finish. Northern Ireland is exceptionally accessible to reach from both North America and mainland Europe. A direct flight to Dublin out of NYC is less than seven hours, and the 90-minute direct train ride or coach journey from Dublin airport to Belfast city gives attendees a chance to take in the beauty of the landscape as soon as they arrive.

For those who prefer to fly straight to their destination, Northern Ireland has 3 airports (Derry-Londonderry, Belfast City, and Belfast International) which land national and international connection flights. Travelers from the U.S. can now fly to Ireland from New York, Washington D.C., Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Atlanta, Denver, and Minneapolis. Carriers include Aer Lingus, Delta, United, American Airlines, and JetBlue.

A well-developed and diversified transit infrastructure incorporating airports, ports, railways, and motorways makes getting around Northern Ireland as straightforward as arriving there.

“Due to the compact size of the North it is suited for a town and country split itinerary,” said Alison Metcalfe, Executive Vice President, Head of North America & Australia/New Zealand for Tourism Ireland. “For example, you can experience Belfast and then drive to the Fermanagh or Mourne Mountains countryside to experience the lush greenery, golf courses, and castles.”

Unique Experiences: Connecting Incentive Travelers With Local History & Culture

A world-class incentive travel destination should offer excellent accommodations, food, beverage, and entertainment — ideally with a sense of character unique to the region.

Northern Ireland’s got it covered.

Unique Hotels Make for Memorable Stays

For luxury-seekers staying in Belfast, the multiple-award winning five-star Merchant Hotel , housed in the historic headquarters of the Ulster Bank, promises to exceed expectations. The Fitzwilliam Hotel , another five-star property in Belfast, boasts a penthouse, panoramic views over the city, a private roof terrace, and baby grand piano.

Throughout Northern Ireland, the Hastings Group of Hotels reliably presents a range of high-end accommodations at the regal Culloden Estate and Spa , the world-famous Europa Hotel , and their newest 300-bedroom property in the city center, Grand Central Hotel .

An interior shot of a lavish dining area at the Merchant Hotel in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Neoclassical columns combine with ornate gilded carvings covering the ceiling, while seating consists of plush lounge chairs.

In Derry-Londonderry, the Bishops Gate Hotel combines restored Edwardian grandeur with contemporary service excellence, and the newly opened Ebrington Hotel features exquisite farm-to-table cuisine by celebrated Irish chefs Noel McNeel and Leigh Thurston.

A little farther afield and where the Mourne Mountains meet the sea, the Slieve Donard Hotel might be the perfect choice for a more exclusive gathering with the stunning landscapes of County Down and the Royal County Down course nearby.

Thoughtful Resorts Put the “Rewarding” in Incentive Travel

Northern Ireland has several appealing locations for retreat-oriented events. The Finn Lough Resort immerses guests in natural beauty, incorporating foraged and farm-to-table cuisine, a forest spa, and the architectural alchemy of its Bubble Domes — where guests can sleep with a full view of the open sky. Just 30 minutes from Belfast, Galgorm Resort and its award-winning outdoor spa village provide exquisite privacy on 450 acres of parkland, with the River Maine running through a lush forest canopy. In the Fermanagh Lakelands, Lough Erne Resort provides five-star luxury, a Thai-style spa, and full integration with the championship Faldo course.

Authentically Local, World-Class Food & Drink Experiences

Northern Ireland boasts a renowned food and beverage scene, including flagship establishments from celebrity chefs like Niall McKenna, Michael Dean, and Alex Green. Many locally owned and managed restaurants are now listed in the Michelin Guide. Additionally, multiple farm-to-fork initiatives in Northern Ireland are well-known for supporting unique small-scale local agriculture, connecting restaurants with award-winning home-grown food.

For a more immersive experience of Irish food, Niall McKenna’s Waterman House Cookery School hosts classes — providing an outside-the-box opportunity for attendees to connect with other countries’ specialties. Northern Ireland has seen a renaissance in brewing and distilling in recent years too, with a long list of top-class producers of beer, cider, whiskey, and gin. A distillery tasting tour offers the opportunity for attendees to enjoy an enriching and memorable experience connecting to the region’s culture, landscapes, and stories. A favorite is the NI Spirits Trail Distillery Passport , which is a self-guided exploration of 14 different distilleries, combining a “passport” keepsake with an experience to remember.

Sustainability: Aligning With Host & Traveler Values

Collaboration between business & public institutions.

Tourism Ireland, Tourism Northern Ireland, Meet in Ireland, CVBs, and hospitality-sector businesses are working together to attain high standards of sustainability across Northern Ireland. Tourism NI has launched a carbon reduction plan and developed a How To Grow Green program for regional businesses. These initiatives are part of a longer term goal to solidify an all-island sustainability certification framework.

Attendees who hold sustainability as a core value will be happy to hear about what this work has already achieved. In 2023 Belfast ranked 11th globally in the GDS Index, in part because 76 percent of hotel rooms in the city hold a sustainable accreditation. That same year the International Convention Centre received the Green Meetings Gold Award in recognition of its exceptional practices, such as sending zero waste to landfill and adopting innovative technologies to minimize its environmental impact.

An Experience of a More Sustainable Way of Life

Northern Ireland’s walkable cities mean they can be explored without having to navigate complicated transportation arrangements, which is a benefit for planners and attendees alike. Northern Ireland also has an excellent rail transport network and a variety of landscapes and cultural attractions within a short distance of any urban center, all of which help adventurous travelers keep their carbon footprint down.

A dramatic cliff drop on the shores of Northern Ireland.

Business travelers want to see events deliver real benefits to host cities , with corporate social responsibility becoming a major part of planning. Programs like Visit Belfast’s Changing The Menu For Good are a fantastic example of this, helping event planners and attendees raise funds for local food banks while also delivering more responsible and sustainable events.

World-Class Leisure: Vibrant Culture in a Stunning Natural Environment

Northern Ireland is well positioned to delight incentive travelers by combining urban cultural experiences with opportunities to connect with rural traditions and local communities. “The music, culinary scene, and history of Northern Ireland speak to its unique charm,” said Alison Metcalfe.

Cities With Rich History

A wealth of interactive and guided experiences can build on how attendees enjoy Northern Ireland’s human-sized cities.

In Derry-Londonderry, attendees can explore the only walled city in Ireland. With its city walls dating back to the 17th century, Derry-Londonderry’s historical architecture includes the Guildhall , St. Columb’s Cathedral, St. Augustine’s Church, and St. Eugene’s Cathedral. After a tour of these heritage sites, attendees can wrap up the afternoon with a stroll through the Craft Village ’s reconstructed 19th-century artisanal market and across the treasured city landmark, the peace bridge.

In Belfast, on the precise site where the Titanic was designed, built, and launched, Titanic Belfast offers a guided tour of the interactive museum — along with thematic culinary experiences, a world-class private events space, and accommodation nearby at the Titanic Hotel. Similarly, Crumlin Road Gaol , a historical prison which officially closed in 1996, is now available for unique private experiences and events. For those looking to explore further, Black Cab Tours will take visitors for a drive that illuminates the political history of Belfast and showcases the street art that locals have created in response.

Get Out of Town: City/Country Programs

A “Giant Spirit” but small geography mean that Northern Ireland is ideal for split city/country programs, which offer a balanced and diverse experience combining both rural and urban environments.

Belfast allows delegates to experience multiple city attractions, including Titanic Belfast, the Ulster Museum, and the wealth of historical sites that make it unique. Follow up with a country retreat to the Slieve Donard Hotel and Mourne Mountains. Once there, attendees can engage with local communities and rural traditions such as Tracey’s Farmhouse Kitchen , where the restaurant’s namesake welcomes groups into her 17th-century cottage to bake soda bread by the fire. Then finish off the day by paddle boarding to a private island for a yoga session.

For those who prefer to stay in the here-and-now, Ballygally Castle and Bushmills Distillery have joined forces to offer the Whiskey on the Rocks experience on the Giant’s Causeway — the world-famous UNESCO World Heritage Site with its unique geometric rock formations. Similarly, Wilde Dining invites attendees to an extraordinary culinary experience that will redefine their definition of al fresco in Co. Fermanagh. As another option, the Game of Thrones Studio Tour gives serious fans exclusive behind-the-scenes access to the making of the show and enviable bragging rights.

Get Outside and Play

With over 90 golf courses across Northern Ireland, a group tee-time is easy to arrange. That said, planners might want to book further out in advance to secure a round on Royal County Down, rated the world’s best golf course. Equally sought-after are the Royal Portrush, which held the 148th open in 2019 and will again in 2025, or the Royal Belfast, the oldest golf course in Ireland.

Hikers will thrill to the scenic views found on the Carrick-a-rede Rope Bridge, the Fermanagh Lakelands, and the Mourne Mountains, home of the UNESCO Global Geopark at Mourne Gullion Strangford.

Embrace a Giant Spirit
