Inspiration.

Being a traveler, global citizen and having worked in the tourism industry for many years I really appreciate this podcast. I know Travel Massive well because I often go to their awesome events in San Francisco. This podcast is a great source of inspiration for all the travelers out there and also the frosting on the cake for Travel Massive as organization.

Source of great inspiration!

Ethan Gelber

Although I'm biased (I'm the subject of interview #3), I've been enjoying the insights found in the all of the other interviews. They make me proud to be part of this space and hopeful that the slow progress we're making isn't as accidental and haphazard as it sometimes seems. Do listen in. There's great inspiration to be had!

travel massive

The global tourism community Travel Massive officially opened a new publishing platform this month at travelmassive.com to shine a light on new travel startups and initiatives.

travel massive

Travel Massive originally started in Sydney as a meetup for travel startups, bloggers, and tour operators to network, and within a few years grew to chapters in 70 countries hosting over 500 meetups a year. Travel Massive’s audience now reaches more than 80,000 industry members across all sectors of tourism, making it one of the largest independent tourism networks.

During the pandemic, the team (based in Tasmania, Bulgaria, and Melbourne) worked on rebuilding Travel Massive’s platform to enable members to share their travel projects with the community and receive feedback and ratings from other members.

Based in the digital nomad hub of Bansko, Bulgaria, Travel Massive’s community lead and content producer, Maria Stoyanova, said: “It’s an exciting big step for Travel Massive as we enter a new era where the world needs to be rediscovered — we’ve built a digital space for everything new in travel to be shared and discovered by our community of travel insiders.”

travel massive

Travel Massive’s new platform works by curating a feed of new tourism projects and content, from startups, blogs, videos, and tours — and allowing members to “upvote” their favorite projects. The most upvoted content is featured in Travel Massive’s weekly newsletter.

“We wanted to create a ‘launchpad’ for new travel ideas to be shared, and be a place where people can discover the future of travel. Our meetups previously connected tens of thousands of people every year who shared the latest in travel - so we’re bringing a digital stage to our members.” said Ian Cumming, founder and CEO of Travel Massive, now based in Tasmania.

travel massive

Travel Massive is also opening up the community to travelers, who until now were unable to join unless they had an industry connection. The new platform will show the status of travel industry members with a blue verified checkmark. This approach enables business owners to also reach and tell their story to consumers — creating a vital connection to help rebuild travel and tourism.

Travel Massive’s city-based groups (such as in Berlin, London, and Colorado) continue to be led by a volunteer team of over 200 community leaders, who helped test the new platform prior to launch, and provide important feedback and ideas to help improve the community.

  • A weekly podcast covering the latest updates (for those who don’t read newsletters).
  • A new events platform for members to arrange their own Travel Massive meetups.
  • A focus on privacy with opt-in public profiles and no creepy tracking cookies.
  • A new Travel Jobs Board featuring job openings and courses for travel professionals.

Save Big on a European Family Vacation with These $2 Kids Fares — What to Know and How to Book

The deal must be booked by September 17.

Icelandic airline Play is making family travel easier by offering $2 fares for kids when an adult books a trip to Europe.

The heavily discounted kid tickets are available when an adult books a roundtrip flight from the United States to Iceland, Copenhagen, Paris, London, Amsterdam, Dublin, Berlin, or Liverpool by 11:59 p.m. ET on Sept. 17, Play told Travel + Leisure . To qualify, kids must be under 11 years old.

“International travel is a way to both bring families together and expose children to new cultures, foods, and experiences,” PLAY CEO Einar Örn Ólafsson said in a statement shared with T+L. “Families with young children can’t always make it across the Atlantic with high travel costs, and PLAY designed this deal to welcome families to our flights to travel together and make memories in Iceland and other amazing destinations.

“These $2 fares for kids are our lowest yet, and we hope that families take this opportunity to cultures, cuisine, and educational visits together,” Ólafsson added.

The $2 kids fares are valid for one-way flights and available for the lowest basic fare. Play’s basic fare includes a personal item, but does not include a carry-on or checked bag or seat selection.

The sale is valid for travel from Sept. 29 to Oct. 6, from Oct. 8 to Oct. 20, from Oct. 22 to Nov. 3, and from Nov. 5 to Dec. 15.

The promotion is available to use on the cost of the airfare, but does not include taxes, fees, or carrier charges.

Low-cost carrier Play first started operating flights in Europe in 2021 before launching its first flight from the U.S. the next year. The airline operates a "hub-and-spoke model" in which all flights connect through Reykjavik before heading on to other destinations across Europe, and flies an Airbus fleet, including the A321neo and A320neo aircraft.

Australians will need to get permission to enter the UK as of January.

The move is an extension of a scheme that requires citizens of countries that do not require a UK visa to get an electronic travel authorisation form.

By April 2025, all visitors who do not need a visa – except British and Irish citizens – will need an electronic travel authorisation to enter the UK.

Migration and Citizenship Minister Seema Malhotra said the move would enhance security and modernise immigration in line with the US and Australia.

Australia requires British passport holders to get an electronic travel authorisation; the authorisation itself is free but there is a $20 fee to use the app to get it.

The authorisation ticket is attached digitally to the passport and obtained via an app.

A UK authorisation costs £10 ($19.66 as of Wednesday) and permits journeys to the UK for stays of up to six months at a time over two years or until the holder’s passport expires – whichever is sooner.

“Digitisation enables a smooth experience for the millions of people who pass through the border every year, including the visitors we warmly welcome to the UK who are predicted to contribute over £32bn to our tourism economy this year,” Ms Malhotra said.

The change means security checks are carried out before people begin their journey to the UK, helping to prevent abuse of the immigration system, the minister says.

Europeans do not yet need an authorisation to get into the UK.

From November 27, all non-Europeans (whose citizenship means they do not need a visa) can apply for an electronic authorisation pass. That cohort will need the pass to enter the UK from January 8.

The passes then become mandatory for Europeans from April 2.

The minister says the government is working with airlines, maritime carriers and rail companies to make sure the change is smooth.

Rome is considering a reservation system to manage overcrowding at Trevi Fountain, with a two euro fee for tourists contributing to monument protection. Southwest Airlines chair Gary Kelly will step down in 2025 following pressure from Elliott Investment Management, which holds an 11% stake in the airline and is pushing for significant changes. Episode Notes

Rome is considering introducing a reservation system to clamp down on overcrowding at Trevi Fountain, one of the world’s most popular attractions, writes Global Tourism Reporter Dawit Habtemariam.

Rome’s Deputy Mayor of Tourism Alessandro Onorato wants to introduce a ticketing reservation system around the fountain to better manage the flow of visitors. Residents of the Italian capital would still be able to visit Trevi Fountain for free, but tourists would have to pay a two euro “symbolic fee.” Revenue would go toward stewards who would help protect the monument.

Next, Southwest Airlines chair Gary Kelly plans to step down from the company’s board following pressure from a major shareholder, writes Airlines Reporter Meghna Maharishi and Airlines Editor Gordon Smith.

Kelly will retire at the end of his term in 2025 following Southwest’s annual shareholder meeting. The news comes after Southwest’s board of directors met with Elliott Investment Management this week. Elliott, which has an 11% economic stake in the airline, has pushed for the resignations of Kelly and CEO Bob Jordan.

The hedge fund has also called for other big changes at the struggling airline, including implementing baggage fees.

Finally, Skift Research recently unveiled its State of Travel 2024 report, an in-depth look at the industry. Senior Research Analyst Varsha Arora examines three standout charts for a closer look .

Arora notes a significant shift Skift Research has seen is the growing focus on experiences over material goods, which has boosted the demand for experiential travel. In addition, social media platforms are becoming an increasingly powerful tool not just for inspiration but for actual travel bookings. Skift Research found that 34% of travelers are very comfortable booking directly through social media platforms.

Meanwhile, the appeal of travel loyalty programs is diminishing, especially among younger travelers.

Ukraine hits Moscow in largest drone strike since war began

Blinken to travel to ukraine as it arms its energy infrastructure ahead of winter.

Ukraine on Tuesday hit the Moscow region in series of drone strikes that killed one woman, destroyed dozens of homes and forced some 50 flights to be rerouted from the Russian capital, reporting by Reuters confirmed.

The attack on Moscow was reportedly the largest drone strike levied by Kyiv at Russia since the war began more than two and half years ago.

Russia, which has heavily relied on drones and missiles in its assault against Ukraine and routinely pummels Kyiv with a barrage of aerial assaults, said it destroyed at least 20 Ukrainian drones over the Moscow region along with another 124 across eight other regions.

BLINKEN CONFIRMS IRAN SUPPLYING RUSSIA WITH SHORT-RANGE BALLISTIC MISSILES

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov suggested the attacks levied at the Russian capital, which has a population of some 21 million, were not legitimate military targets.

"There is no way that nighttime strikes on residential neighborhoods can be associated with military action," he told reporters. "The Kyiv regime continues to demonstrate its nature.

"They are our enemies and we must continue the special military operation to protect ourselves from such actions," he said, perpetuating the term used by Moscow to describe its invasion of Ukraine.

Kyiv has not yet commented on the overnight strike, but reportedly said Russia attacked it with some 46 drones, 38 of them destroyed by Ukrainian defenses.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Tuesday he will travel to Ukraine along with British Foreign Secretary David Lammy to meet with their Ukrainian counterpart and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy later this week.

"It’s a critical moment to what is an intense, all-fighting season," Blinken told reporters. "With Russia continuing to escalate its aggression – aggression against civilians, against critical infrastructure, and, of course, against Ukrainian forces – we see it ramping up its attacks on cities, people, in particular, targeting the energy infrastructure."

Blinken pointed to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s "playbook" for weaponizing Ukraine’s energy infrastructure amid the cold winter months, as he has done the last two years, and said this upcoming trip reflects the U.S. and NATO’s commitment to ensuring Ukraine can defend itself against Russian attacks.

ROMANIA AND LATVIA CONFIRM INCURSIONS BY RUSSIAN DRONES INTO NATO AIRSPACE

It is unclear what specifically will be addressed during the Blinken-Lammy visit this week, though Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal echoed concerns addressed by the U.S. secretary of state on Tuesday and said some 85% of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure is protected against anticipated Russian attacks, reported the Kyiv Independent .

Ukrainians across the country, including in Kyiv, have been living with intermittent blackouts for months following Russia’s intense campaign against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure in March – during which a reported 80% of thermal generating capacity of the nation’s largest private energy company, DTEK, was damaged or destroyed.

Energy officials in June were sounding the alarm that Ukrainians may only have access to electricity for as little as six hours a day during this upcoming winter, depending on how much of the grid can be repaired.

Shmyhal on Tuesday did not specify how much of the grid has been restored or what lengths of power outages Ukrainians may be forced to endure this winter.

Instead, he highlighted the efforts being made to secure Ukraine’s energy industry and said the Ukrainian government had allocated some $461 million to protect energy facilities while an additional $315 million had been provided by foreign allies.

Tropical Storm Francine may affect Eastern Washington’s travel plans this week

Eastern Washington running back Tuna Altahir reacts during Saturday’s nonconference game against Drake in Cheney. (Courtesy of EWU Athletics)

After the conference picked up another win over an FBS opponent last weekend, the Big Sky’s matchups Saturday are almost entirely about proving the conference’s teams can handle others their own size.

Of the conference’s 11 games this week, 10 are against other FCS teams. That includes Eastern Washington’s return trip to Southeastern Louisiana (0-2), which is coming off losses to FBS teams Southern Miss and Tulane.

Not only that, the Lions – who lost to the Eagles 40-29 in Cheney last season – are contending with Tropical Storm Francine, which is creeping through the Gulf of Mexico. The storm led Southeastern Louisiana to close its campus until midday Thursday.

The storm has also impacted the Eagles’ travel plans, although it should not impact Saturday’s game.

“When you’re going across two time zones, we like to sneak out on Thursday,” EWU head coach Aaron Best said during media availability on Tuesday. “I don’t know if that will be the case or not.”

Regardless, the Eagles are looking to get their second win, which would also help the Big Sky’s standing among FCS conferences. Aside from the obvious impact of wins and losses on the conference’s individual teams, a Saturday like this helps the Big Sky affirm its status as one of the FCS’ best conferences.

That can potentially come into play at the end of the season as the postseason committee decides on at-large bids in the 24-team playoff bracket.

There is just one unbeaten Big Sky team left this year, and that’s Montana State, which has one of the conference’s two wins over FBS teams – Idaho, which beat Wyoming last week, is the other – as well as a victory over Maine last weekend. The Bobcats, idle Saturday, remained at No. 3 in this week’s Stats Perform Top 25. Idaho (1-1) is one spot behind.

The Big Sky is 5-4 against other FCS conferences. Two of those losses are to teams in the nonscholarship Pioneer Football League, including Eastern’s 35-32 overtime loss to Drake and Cal Poly’s 27-21 loss to San Diego.

This week, Morehead State (2-0) heads to Montana with a chance to give the Pioneer League a 3-0 sweep of the season series.

“Their league has done a good job in the early season, and I expect they will come in here fully expecting to beat us,” Montana head coach Bobby Hauck said during a Monday news conference. “We’ve got a big week of preparation. We need to find a way to get a win this weekend.”

No. 8 Montana (1-1) is coming off a 27-24 loss at North Dakota (1-1), which moved up to No. 10 in the Stats Perform poll. Montana plays at Eastern Washington on Sept. 28.

This week, Idaho State (1-1) heads to Grand Forks, North Dakota, for its shot at the Fighting Hawks. It is looking to win there for the second straight time, following a 25-21 victory at North Dakota – now of the Missouri Valley Football Conference – in 2018.

North Dakota was a Big Sky member from 2012 to 2017 and shared the conference title with Eastern Washington in 2016.

“Road games are hard to win at any level,” ISU head coach Cody Hawkins said after the Bengals’ 50-10 win Saturday over Western Oregon. “I have a ton of respect for the Fighting Hawks. I’ve lost games there before and had tight battles with them when they came to our place. They’re going to be as well coached as anybody we play. … Those fans are proud, and that’s a darn good football team.”

The Big Sky has three other teams ranked in the Top 25, including No. 11 Sacramento State (0-2), with two losses against FBS schools San Jose State and Fresno State. UC Davis, Eastern’s opponent on Oct. 19, is ranked 15th after a win over Texas A&M-Commerce of the Southland Conference; Weber State (1-1), which beat Portland State 43-16 on Saturday in the Big Sky’s first conference game, is ranked 20th.

UC Davis’ victory was the first for head coach Tim Plough, a former Aggies quarterback and assistant coach who took over for Dan Hawkins during the offseason.

The game-clinching play in UC Davis’ 36-22 victory was a 60-yard interception return touchdown by linebacker David Meyer, who was named co-Big Sky Defensive Player of the Week.

“I’m sure I’ll be thinking years from now when I’m done about David Meyer intercepting that pass and making us all take a deep breath,” Plough said Monday during his weekly media availability.

“Just to have my family here, my friends, was a cool moment. … I’m getting a lot more texts now that I’m at the helm of the team they all care about.”

The Big Sky, which has six victories over Mountain West Conference teams since the start of the 2021 season, has two more games this season against teams from that conference. Portland State travels to Boise State on Sept. 21, the same day Eastern Washington will play at Nevada.
