The next day will allow you to "meander" along the river of its name to the much sought after site of Pamukkale before continuing overland to Antalya. This journey will allow you to see some of the Anatolian landscapes and some impressive mountains along the way to the beautiful, turquoise Mediterranean coast of Antalya.

In Antalya you'll enjoy a mix of touring and seaside lounging, where 8000 foot mountains rise from a backdrop of crystal clear waters. 3 nights here will allow you to see a mix of sites and enjoy the warm beaches.

You'll return to Istanbul for one last night before departing the final day on your international flight.

Hippodrome:

  • An enormous public entertainment arena, it once seated as many as 100,000 zealous fans who came to watch chariot races, executions, and mock battles.  Formerly the center of Byzantine civic life, it is still marked by the Egyptian Obelisk, the Bronze Serpentine Column, and the Column of Constantine.

Blue Mosque:

  • With its massive central dome flanked by six slender minarets, the Blue Mosque stands as the single most recognizable monument in the Istanbul skyline.  Built between 1609 and 1616, the enormous complex also included a hospital, caravansary, public kitchen, marketplace, schools and the Mausoleum of Sultan Ahmet I.  The mosque’s immense interior, flooded with sunlight streaming through 260 windows, is decorated with more than 20,000 precious Iznik tiles detailing traditional flowers of Ottoman design.  In fact, it is the deep blue glow of the tiles in the sunlight that gives the building its name.

Hagia Sophia:

  •  This famous basilica was constructed in the 6th century A.D.. It is often described as the greatest work of Byzantine architecture.  Once the Church of Holy Wisdom, Christendom’s crowning glory, it glittered with mosaics and artistic treasures.  Today, the Hagia Sophia is the fourth largest building constructed as a church in the world. It was dedicated to Hagia Sophia which means Divine Wisdom – an attribute of Christ.

Basilica Cistern:

  • Istanbul, besieged countless times, has always needed permanent water supplies.  As a result, many underground cisterns were built during the Byzantine Empire.  Water was brought to these big reservoirs from distant sources via aqueducts.  We will visit the largest and most ornate of these cisterns.

Grand Bazaar:

  • The area of the Grand Bazaar was a trade center during the Byzantine period.  Two domes were built by Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror to enrich the economic life of the city.  Today, the atmosphere of the Grand Bazaar is mysterious and intriguing.  It has become a very popular place, where visitors explore a labyrinth of streets and passages housing eighteen entrances and more than 4,000 shops.

Topkapi Palace:

  •  The home for 400 years of ruling Sultan’s in Istanbul, this is a not to be missed site. The second palace built in Istanbul after its conquest by the Turks, it served as the center of the Ottoman Empire between the 15th and 19th centuries. This palace’s maze of oppulent buildings is where the sultans, their courts, and their harems lived and governed.

Spice Market:

  • This covered market, built as part of the Yeni Cami (New Mosque) complex, is filled with the fragrant scent of spices from the Orient.

Bosphorus Straits:

  • This narrow, navigable strait between Europe and Asia connects the Black Sea to the Marmara Sea.  It is about 20 miles long and up to one and a half miles wide.  Our cruise will take us past the late Ottoman Palaces – Dolmabahce and Beylerbeyi, as well as beautiful, wooden mansions and modern villas built in this elegant section of the city during the 19th & 20th centuries.
  • Once a leading city of Rome - it fell prey to silting up of the harbor - which also lead to the cities downfall and protection, to our benefit as it is now one of the best preserved cities from the ancient world.

Hierapolis:

  • The ancient city of Hierapolis sits atop the white cliffs of Pamukkale.  The “Sacred City” was thought to have been founded by the god Apollo, and it was believed that its ancient, hot spring fed baths had the ability to heal injuries and remove ailments.  It is also the site of the largest Necropolis (city of the dead) in existence.  Above the ruins of the city sits its amphitheater and the St. Philip Martyrium.

Pamukkale:

  • An unusual natural and historical site with its sparkling, white, castle-like cascades, it is unique in the world. The site’s name means “cotton castle”, a name which accurately describes its calcareous formations, which were formed by limestone-laden thermal springs.

Antalya Museum

  • An overlooked delight- set on the coast of Antalya - this museum has collections from so many ancient sites - they have to store the less well known pieces in the garden!   Its section's include pre-historic tombs, a wonderful pottery timeline with rooms of intact specimens, all the best Statues from Perge, an overview of St. Nicholas (from nearby Demre, Antalya), the unbelievably impressive Lycian tombs, to the ruins recently discovered from the Antalya necropolis.
  • Built in 2nd Century BC -and always well protected since, the harbor is now the center of a thriving city - Antalya's old town is a remarkable mix of 'get lost alleyways', sleek new restaurants, upscale bars, and delightful old protected Roman and Byzantine ruins - it was expanded under the Keykubat reign during Ottoman times and there are both Churches and Mosques to visit.
  • Don't miss walking along the shore or the harbor-  with impressive views of the bay and Toros mountains.

Perge / Perga Ancient Site

  • Perga is located 15 km east of Antalya and is an impressively restored Greek/Roman/Byzanitine city.  Don't miss one of the largest Roman bath complexes, the center of the road fountains, or the partially restored shops in the NE part of the city.   This NE gate was the start of the Via Sebaste  - the way of fame from St. Paul's first journey.

Aspendos Ancient Theater

  • This ancient city is known for having the best-preserved theatre of antiquity.  Not much of the city remains, but the theater is intact and you can in September often see evening performances.  It is a marvel and not to be missed.

Our Top Pick

Hot-Air-balloon-Reusuable

3 Day Istanbul to Cappadocia Tour

If you’re not sure which tour to take, we recommend the 3-day Istanbul to Cappadocia tour because it covers all the highlights of Cappadocia.

It takes you to the most iconic valleys and includes an ATV Tour of Red and Rose Valley , a guided tour of Derinkuyu Underground City , a tour of Goreme Open Air Museum , a hike through Ihlara Valley , and of course, a Hot Air Balloon ride .

This tour is for those wanting to experience all the best of Cappadocia and only have a short amount of time.

How To Pick Which Tour from Istanbul to Cappadocia Is Right For You?

Before we dive straight in and tell you the best tours, let’s quickly cover how you can pick the right tour for you.

Each of these tours are very different and unique from the other, so it’s important to think about what you want to get out of your experience before you book.

Are you looking to do hot air balloon rides?

Hot-Air-Balloon-Tours-Cappadocia-Turkey

Hot air balloon rides are one of the main reasons to visit Cappadocia and are truly an unforgettable experience.

There is something so magical about taking to the skies with hundreds of other hot air balloons and watching the sun rise over the unique rocky landscape below.

But there is only one catch, and that’s hot air balloon flights don’t fly every day. This is because they cannot fly if the weather conditions are too windy.

If you desperately want to do a hot air balloon ride, you will need to look at tours that have at least 2 days in Cappadocia.

On the 2-day tour, a hot air balloon ride is sometimes included, but you only have one day to take the flight, so if the weather conditions are not right, you will miss out.

However on a 3 day tour from Istanbul to Cappadocia, if are unable to do the flight on the first day, you can try again on the second. If you really want to do the hot air balloon flight, then we recommend you look for tours that are at least 3 day s.

If you can’t do the hot air balloon flight, the tour company will refund you for the price of this.

How much hiking do you want to do?

Visit-Rose-Valley

Another thing Cappadocia is famous for is hiking. While the valleys are not steep nor the hikes strenuous, many of the hiking trails are long.

The entire Red and Rose Valley hike is about 7.7km, and the Ihlara Valley Hike is another 10km, so if you plan to do both (especially in one day), you will have some aching legs at the end of it.

On top of the hikes, the tours also have a lot of walking at each stop.

There is also some level of scrambling when visiting the underground cities, and you should be prepared for a long climb up to the top of Uchisar Castle.

If walking is a problem for you, you will probably want to consider a 1 or 2 day tour.

How much time do you have?

Of course, we are not all blessed with time, so the tour you pick will largely depend on how much time you have to spare.

If time is at your disposal, we recommend you spend at least 3 days in Cappadocia.

This is the minimum number of days you need to see the highlights, although you are going to rush through it!

Do you mind rushing?

The tours are usually designed to show you as much as possible in as little time. The average amount of time you spend at each stop on an organized tour is roughly an hour.

If you don’t like rushing, then you might want to look at the 4+ day tours, which usually have a more flexible itinerary, plus free time on the first and last day, and some downtime in-between activities.

This way you can do some of the other things you want to do in Cappadocia that might not be included on the tour – say, a Turkish Hamam?

Do you want a guide for Istanbul first?

Sultanahmet-Istanbul-Mosque

Most tours from Istanbul to Cappadocia go straight to Cappadocia, especially if they are between 1-3 days. However, if you have just landed in Istanbul and haven’t seen the city yet, then you might want to cast your eyes at the 5 and 6-day tours, which have 1-2 days in Istanbul first.

Regardless of which tour you choose, you can expect to spend at least 3 days in Cappadocia , with the rest of the time spent in Istanbul or traveling.

The Best Tours from Istanbul to Cappadocia

Now if you’re thinking this all sounds excellent and you know what you’re looking for, then it’s time to show you the best tours to Cappadocia from Istanbul!

Go take a look…

1 Day Tour from Istanbul to Cappadocia

You might be thinking, “hold up, isn’t Cappadocia 720km away?”

Yes, it is!

And because Cappadocia is an unmissable stop on any Turkey itinerary , you can find direct flights throughout the day – including very early in the morning and late at night, making it totally possible to visit for one day.

On a one day tour from Istanbul to Cappadocia, you will be woken up at the crack of dawn.

This small-group tour starts at 5.30 am, where you are then picked up from your hotel by private transfer, and taken to Istanbul Airport.

You will then take a short flight to Kayseri International Airport where you will meet your guide and driver for the day. You will have the luxury of an air-conditioned minivan, a blessing on a hot summers day!

Rose-Valley-Trek-Views

The first stop on the one-day tour is the beautiful Rose Valley .

We always say if you only have time for one valley in Cappadocia, make it this one.

Rose Valley is a stunning valley full of famous fairy chimneys (historic sandstone rock dwellings), cave churches, craggy rock pinnacles, orchards, and viewpoints.

As you wander around the valley, your guide will tell you about the history of the valley and how the cave dwellings were once used, as well as tell you about the formation of the valley such as how Rose Valley gets its name.

You will then head to the old village of Cavusin where you’ll find the Basilica of St John the Baptist, a huge structure that sits on a cliff top overlooking Cavusin.

Here you will have lunch at one of Cappadocia’s finest restaurants, serving traditional food, before heading on to the next stop.

The next stop is the old town of Ortahisar, which is a vibrant town made up of cave dwellings and stone houses. You’ll visit the impressive Ortahisar Castle, a 295-foot-high Byzantine-era fortification, which offers panoramic views of the region below.

Kaymakli Underground City

After that, you’ll visit one of the most unique places in Cappadocia; the Kaymakli Underground City .

During the 7th century BC (or so it is believed) the local Christians built a series of underground cities to hide from Byzantine invaders.

There are several underground cities in the region, but Kaymakli is believed to be the oldest.

Experts believe that it once housed 3,500 people, including all their livestock and belongings.

As you wander through the tunnels and caverns, your guide will tell you all about what life might have been like for these people and what we know about its history.

The last stop is Pigeon Valley, which is so named because it was used by local people to house their pigeons.

As well as being a place of historical importance, it’s also beautiful and has more of those epic Cappadocian rock formations that make the region so famous.

After exploring Pigeon Valley , it’s time to head back to Istanbul.

Your driver will take you back to Kayseri Airport where you can catch your return flight. You’ll be picked up from the airport in Istanbul and taken back to your hotel.

  • If you only have one day to spend, it covers most of the highlights of Cappadocia
  • The tour price includes everything from transport, flights, entrance tickets, and your guide. The only thing not covered by the price is gratuities and the cost of your meal.
  • Children are welcome on this tour
  • This tour has a maximum of 20 people, and if full, it can be hard to hear the guide if you are standing at the back.
  • It does not include a hot air balloon ride 🙁
  • There is a lot of walking and in Kaymakli Underground City, you may need to do some crouching. It’s not recommended you do this tour if you have back problems, claustrophobia, or if you use a wheelchair
  • You only have a day in Cappadocia, so expect this to be a whistle-stop tour. You only get to spend an hour at most at each place, so you might feel it’s a little rushed.

2 Day Tour from Istanbul to Cappadocia

Personally, I think 2 days is the bare minimum amount of time you would need to spend in Cappadocia, and this 2-day tour from Istanbul to Cappadocia covers all the highlights!

What to Bring on an Istanbul to Cappadocia Tour

Most of these tours are designed to be a getaway from Istanbul, so you don’t need to bring too much with you.

If you are visiting for 1-3 days, you can leave your big suitcase in Istanbul, and pack a small carry-on bag. In fact, most 1-3 day tours will not book hold luggage for your flight, so you will need to pay extra to bring a suitcase.

Here’s what we suggest you bring:

  • Sturdy, comfortable shoes. Most of these tours involve some level of hiking or go to an underground city, which has a slippery, stone surface. Leave flip-flops at home.
  • Sunhat and sunscreen. It can get quite hot in the middle of the day, and because of the white rock, it reflects the sun and makes it feel stronger than usual.
  • Pack warm clothes. Contrary to the above, it can get cold at night, even when visiting in the summer. Bring warm clothes to wear in the evenings.
  • Bring cash. If you need to pay extra for entrance fees, you’ll need to pay this to your guide in cash.
  • Camera, obviously.
  • Head scarf (for women) and modest clothing for Istanbul. You will need to have your knees, shoulders and, for women, your hair covered when entering mosques in Istanbul.
  • Bring extra cash for a tip. Tipping is not required but it’s customary to tip your guide and your driver if you have enjoyed your experience. The recommended tipping price is 10% of your tour value.

Final Thoughts on Tours from Istanbul to Cappadocia

Taking an organized tour from Istanbul to Cappadocia is the best way to relieve some stress from your vacation planning. It can also be a great way to see a lot of sites in a short amount of time.

Having the added benefit of a knowledgeable guide, also means you can learn about the sites you are seeing, as well as get information about the history and culture of the area.

Taking a tour means your entire Istanbul to Cappadocia itinerary is taken care of for you. As you can see from the tours in this guide, most of them include everything, from transport (including flights), accommodation, entrance tickets, the price of a guide, and sometimes even the price of a hot air balloon ride.

While tours usually do cost a bit more than doing it yourself, you do get the added benefit of a stress-free time.

And after all, who wants stress on vacation?

ISTANBUL TRAVEL GUIDE: 3 DAY ITINERARY

After a few days in Antalya , Cappadocia , we ended our trip in Istanbul. Istanbul is one of the world’s largest cities spanning Europe and Asia. There is so much to see and do in Istanbul, this is my second time visiting Istanbul and there is still so much I have yet to explore. Istanbul in 3 days is the perfect time to see many sites and enjoy the amazing culture and food. Here’s my Istanbul Travel Guide, the perfect 3-day itinerary on everything you need to do.

tour istanbul cappadocia antalya

HOW TO GET TO ISTANBUL

There are two international airports in Istanbul: Istanbul Airport (IST) on the Europe side and Sabiha Gokcen Airport (SAW) on the Asia side. The main airport is IST and we flew from JFK to IST with Turkish Airlines. Istanbul Airport is around 40 minutes to the city center by car.

THINGS TO KNOW

Currency : Credit cards are widely accepted, but most small shops and taxis will ask for cash. The official currency is Istanbul is the Turkish Lira, however many places accept Euros.

Transportation : Use the Bitaksi app for taxis, or Uber is also available. Ask to turn on the meter when using a taxi (the charge is on top of 100TL). Always ask for the price before getting into a taxi.

Dress Code : Be mindful of the dress code when visiting religious sites. For women, bring a scarf to cover your head or use one provided at the entrance. Women will also need to cover their shoulders and knees. Men should also cover their knees and no tank tops.

Safety : Istanbul is a safe city for tourists, but please always stay alert, especially in busy locations. Be cautious of pickpockets in crowded areas.

WHERE TO STAY

The mest hotel.

We stayed at The Mest Hotel on our recent trip. I enjoyed this hotel, however, it is in a busy area and next to the Yeni Mosque so every morning guests will hear the prayers around 5 am. The Mest Hotel is a boutique hotel with views of the Yeni Mosque. We stayed in the Deluxe Room with Balcony and Sea View. All rooms with a balcony will have views of the mosque. The location was great for walking to Sultanahmet, a 20-minute walk, and a 25-minute walk across the bridge to Galata and Karakoy. It’s also located at the south end of Galata Tower with the metro stations and ferries.

The Peninsula Hotel

I would love to stay at The Peninsula Hotel in Karakoy when I visit again. This is a luxury 5-star hotel that opened in 2022 and is centrally located along the Bosphorus in Karakoy. The location is great and the property is beautiful. We dined at the rooftop restaurant, Gallada , and loved it. It was my favorite meal of the entire trip.

Shangri-La Bosphorus

I’ve stayed at the Shangri-La Bosphorus Hotel in 2018. This is also a great 5-star hotel if you’re looking to stay along the Bosphorus and away from the touristy area. It is a little farther out, but it is also great if you plan to explore other areas of Istanbul like Ortakoy.

tour istanbul cappadocia antalya

We landed in Istanbul in the afternoon, allowing us to explore the area we were staying in.

LUNCH AT MIMAR SINAN TERAS ROOFTOP

Have lunch at Mimar Sinan Teras Rooftop . It’s a 15-minute walk from the Mest Hotel and gorgeous views of the Yeni Camii Mosque.

YENI CAMII MOSQUE

The Yeni Camii Mosque is located at the southern end of the Galata Bridge. It is free to visit and next to the Mest Hotel and overlooks the harbor of Eminonu.

EGYPTIAN/SPICE BAZAAR

We stumbled on this while walking around. The shops provide samples of tea and Turkish delight and they’re all good! They’re great gifts to buy as well.

DINNER AT OLDEN 1772

I recommend dining at Olden 1772 . This is a must when visiting Istanbul. The restaurant is in a historic building, it’s beautiful inside and the food is great! I loved the grilled octopus and the cripsy manti. It’s an Anatolian and Istanbul cuisine. Make reservations here .

tour istanbul cappadocia antalya

BRUNCH AT SEVEN HILLS RESTAURANT

Get Turkish breakfast at Seven Hills Restaurant in Sultanahmet, a 20-minute walk from the hotel. The Turkish breakfast here is great and the rooftop has views of the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sofia. We had reservations at 10:30 am and had a great corner table that I requested when making my reservation. Make reservations here .

tour istanbul cappadocia antalya

SOFIA HAGIA

Sofia Hagia is the fourth-largest cathedral and one of the most iconic mosques in the world. Make sure to purchase advance tickets , or be prepared to wait in a long line. I forgot to do this, so we did not get to visit during our trip. Tickets at the door is 25 euros.

tour istanbul cappadocia antalya

BASILICA CISTERN

Next to Sofia Hagia is the Basilica Cistern . The Basilica Cistern was built to supply water to the Great Palace and buildings throughout the city. I also recommend purchasing advance tickets , the line is not as long here but it’s still worth avoiding. Tickets at the door is 800TL, around $25.

THE BLUE MOSQUE

After visiting the Basilica Cistern, or Sofia Hagia, across the way is The Blue Mosque . A visit to Istanbul is not complete without visiting the gorgeous Blue Mosque. This is free to visit.

THE GRAND BAZAAR

The Grand Bazaar is just 15 minutes from The Blue Mosque. The Grand Bazaar is one of the biggest and oldest shopping markets in the world.

DINE AT AHESTE

Aheste Restaurant is part of the MIchelin Guide and this was Ryan’s favorite meal on our trip. It’s a modern Turkish and Middle Eastern tapa styled restaurant. This restaurant is about a 10 minute walk from Galata and reservations are required . The chicken confit was my favorite item, they also have a tasting menu for 2800TL.

EXPLORE BALAT

Have breakfast at the hotel and spend the afternoon exploring the beautiful neighborhood of Balat. This was about a 10-15 minute taxi ride or a 20 minute metro ride from Eminönü train station. The taxi ride should only cost about 250TL.

There are 3 main areas for photos in Balat. Start at the colorful stairs, and right next to the stairs to the right is the umbrella street with vendors for coffee and juices. The third location, is the beautiful street of colorful homes. This took us some time to find, go up the colorful stairs and we started asking other tourists the image to help us find it. Many tour guides also go here, so if you see a group don’t be shy to ask them.

tour istanbul cappadocia antalya

LUNCH IN BALAT

Popstel Balat is a cute cafe inside a cute bookstore. The cafe is located on the second floor with views of Balat. It was closed when we tried to go. There are plenty of other restaurants and cafes to try as well.

EXPLORE KADIKOY – ASIA SIDE

From Eminönü, take a ferry to the Asia side and explore Kadikoy. The ferry ride is 20 minutes, with beautiful views along the Bosphorus. Check the ferry boat timetable here .

While in Kadikoy there are plenty of cute colorful streets for shopping, we found a cute 2D cafe, Suflor Kadikoy and it was very nostalgic of the 90s. They sell souffles and it was so good!

Some other recommendations is Kadi Nimet Bakery and Dolce Far Niente for the pistachio affogato.

DINNER AT GALLADA AT THE PENINSULA HOTEL

Gallada is located at the rooftop of the Peninsula Hotel. This restaurant is absolutely beautiful and perfect for dinner at sunset. The views are amazing and this was my favorite meal of our entire trip. Everything was incredible! The chef has another restaurant in Istanbul with 2 Michelin Stars, Turk Faith Tutak . I now wish we had time to try this restaurant too!

I recommend ordering from Gallada the chicken wings, bread with tomatoes, fried dumplings, lamb, and do not miss out on the baklava! The best baklava I had, it’s not too sweet, the perfect crunch and just delious.

MORE THINGS TO DO IN ISTANBUL

Explore Ortakoy if you have time. I wanted to do this, but did not have the time to visit. Ortakoy is a charming neighborhood by the Bosphorus river and has the iconic viewpoint of the mosque and bridge for gorgeous photos.

Taksim Square is the Times Square of Istanbul. There are many great restaurants, shops and historical structures.

Dolmabahce Palace is a luxurious building, a symbol of Ottoman grandeur. Explore the opulent interior, paintings, and lavish furniture with views of the Bosphorus from the palace’s garden. It’s a must visit when visiting Istanbul, unfortunately I forgot about to add this to our itinerary!

Go on a sunset Bosphorus Cruis e. This is always something that can be touristy but it’s always fun to cruise along the Bosphorus and see all the iconic landmarks.

MORE RESTAURANTS IN ISTANBUL

Pera Palace Hotel for the iconic afternoon tea . We almost did this, but did not have time. The hotel looks absolutely stunning, reservations are required.

Karakoy Lokantasi for traditional ottoman style cuisine.

Hacibasar Kebap is one of the best restaurants for kebap.

For rooftop restaurants with amazing views of the city, dine at Bebek Hotel Rooftop Restaurant , Sunset Grill and Bar , or Olea Bosphors and Bar at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel .

Istanbul has so much to see and do, three days was the perfect amount of time to experience the city. I know I’ll be back and will still have so much more to experience. If you have any other recommendations please leave a comment below!
