What To Wear On White Night On A Cruise

white dress for cruise night

Attending a white night party on a cruise ship is an exciting opportunity to get dressed up and have some fun with your fellow travelers. If you aren’t sure what to wear to a white party at sea, you have come to the right place.

The quick answer is: wear white or light-colored party attire that’s appropriate for a fun yet classy event . Formal white dresses or pantsuits for women and a white button-down or polo for men are great options.

In this comprehensive guide, we will cover everything you need to know about dressing for white night on a cruise, including specific outfit suggestions for men and women that meet venue requirements while still allowing you to express your personal style.

What is White Night on a Cruise?

White Night on a cruise is an exciting event that takes place during certain nights on a cruise ship. It is a themed party where passengers are encouraged to dress in all-white attire and enjoy a night of fun and entertainment.

The concept of White Night has become increasingly popular in recent years, and many cruise lines now incorporate this event into their itineraries as a highlight of the voyage.

The Concept of a White Party

The concept of a white party originated in the fashion industry, where it was seen as a chic and elegant way to celebrate special occasions. The idea is to create a visually stunning atmosphere by having everyone dressed in white from head to toe.

White parties are known for their glamorous and sophisticated ambiance, making them a perfect fit for a cruise ship setting.

White parties have gained popularity not only in the fashion world but also in social events and entertainment. They are often associated with luxury and exclusivity, and attending a white party on a cruise ship adds an extra touch of glamour to the experience.

White Night on Cruises

White Night on cruises typically takes place on a designated night during the voyage. Passengers are encouraged to dress in white attire, including white dresses, suits, and accessories. The cruise ship’s staff also participates by wearing white uniforms or themed costumes.

The White Night event on a cruise ship is much more than just a dress code. It is a celebration that includes special activities and entertainment tailored to the occasion. Passengers can expect live music, dancing, themed decorations, and even fireworks in some cases.

The atmosphere is lively and festive, creating a memorable experience for all guests on board.

White Night on a cruise provides an opportunity for passengers to socialize, relax, and enjoy the company of fellow travelers in a unique and glamorous setting. It allows guests to immerse themselves in the spirit of the event and create lasting memories of their cruise vacation.

If you’re planning to attend a White Night on a cruise, make sure to pack your best white outfit and get ready to have a great time! It’s a fantastic opportunity to dress up, let loose, and enjoy the magic of cruising.

White Night Dress Codes

Typical formality level.

White Night on a cruise is an exciting event where passengers come together to celebrate and enjoy a night of elegance and glamour. The dress code for White Night can vary depending on the cruise line and the specific ship.

However, in most cases, the dress code for White Night falls somewhere between semi-formal and formal attire.

For women, a typical White Night dress code may include elegant cocktail dresses or long gowns in white or light colors. It’s a great opportunity to showcase your style and sophistication. Pair your dress with matching accessories and don’t forget to bring a light wrap or shawl in case it gets chilly on the deck.

For men, a White Night dress code often calls for a suit or a tuxedo in white or light colors. A crisp white shirt, a bowtie or a regular tie, and polished dress shoes complete the elegant look. Remember, attention to detail is key, so make sure your outfit is well-fitted and tailored to perfection.

Rules and Restrictions

While White Night is a fun and festive event, there are usually some rules and restrictions that passengers need to follow. These rules ensure that everyone can enjoy the evening without any issues or inconveniences.

One common rule is that guests are required to wear white or light-colored attire. This is to create a cohesive and visually stunning atmosphere on the deck, where everyone is dressed in harmony. It’s best to avoid wearing dark colors or patterns that may disrupt the overall aesthetic of the event.

Additionally, some cruise lines may have specific guidelines regarding footwear. For safety reasons, they may require guests to wear closed-toe shoes or formal sandals instead of flip-flops or casual beach footwear.

It’s always a good idea to check the dress code guidelines provided by your cruise line before packing for your trip.

What Women Should Wear

White cocktail dresses.

White cocktail dresses are a popular choice for women attending White Night on a cruise. They are elegant, stylish, and perfect for a night of dancing and socializing. Whether you prefer a classic A-line silhouette or a more form-fitting sheath dress, there are plenty of options to choose from.

Pair your dress with strappy heels and some statement jewelry to complete the look.

White Pantsuits

If you’re looking for a chic and sophisticated outfit for White Night, consider wearing a white pantsuit. Pantsuits are not only fashionable but also offer comfort and versatility. You can opt for a tailored blazer and trousers combination or go for a jumpsuit-style pantsuit.

Complete the ensemble with a pair of stylish pumps and a clutch bag.

White Jumpsuits

For a trendy and modern look, white jumpsuits are a great choice for White Night. Jumpsuits are effortlessly stylish and can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. Choose a jumpsuit with a flattering cut and pair it with some statement jewelry and a pair of heels.

You’ll be sure to turn heads as you dance the night away on the cruise.

Accessorizing Your Outfit

When it comes to accessorizing your White Night outfit, there are a few key things to keep in mind. Firstly, consider the neckline of your dress or jumpsuit and choose a necklace that complements it. If your outfit is more minimalistic, you can opt for a bold statement necklace to add some drama.

Secondly, don’t forget about your shoes and handbag. Choose a pair of shoes that are comfortable for dancing and a clutch or small handbag that complements your outfit. Lastly, consider adding some sparkle with earrings or bracelets to complete your look.

What Men Should Wear

White Night on a cruise is a special event that calls for a certain dress code. Men should aim for a crisp and polished look that complements the elegant atmosphere of the evening. Here are some key items to consider when deciding what to wear:

White Button Downs

A classic white button-down shirt is a must-have for any gentleman attending White Night on a cruise. It exudes sophistication and pairs well with different bottoms. Opt for a well-fitted shirt made from high-quality fabric to ensure a sharp and tailored appearance.

This versatile piece can be dressed up with a blazer or dressed down with a pair of white pants.

White Polos, Tees or Henleys

If you prefer a more relaxed and casual look, a white polo, tee, or henley is a great choice. These options are comfortable and stylish, allowing you to feel at ease while still looking polished. Pair your white top with either white pants for a monochromatic look or with navy or beige shorts for a more nautical vibe.

White Pants

White pants are a staple for White Night on a cruise. They add a touch of elegance and sophistication to any outfit. Opt for a pair made from a breathable and lightweight fabric, such as linen or cotton, to keep you comfortable throughout the evening.

Remember to choose a well-fitted style that flatters your body shape and complements the rest of your ensemble.

Ties and Jackets

For those who want to take their attire to the next level, adding a tie and jacket can elevate your look. A white tie paired with a navy blazer creates a timeless and refined outfit. Alternatively, a white jacket paired with darker pants can make a bold fashion statement.

Experiment with different combinations to find the one that best suits your personal style.

Remember, the key to dressing for White Night on a cruise is to embrace the theme and have fun with your outfit. Whether you opt for a classic and traditional look or a more contemporary ensemble, confidence is the ultimate accessory.

Shoes, Bags and Accessories

Footwear options for women.

When it comes to choosing the right shoes for White Night on a cruise, women have a variety of options to consider. For a more formal look, opt for elegant heels or strappy sandals that will complement your evening attire.

If you prefer a more comfortable option, a pair of stylish flats or wedges can be a great choice. Don’t forget to consider the comfort and support of your shoes, as you’ll be dancing and exploring the ship throughout the night.

It’s also important to choose a bag that matches your outfit and is practical enough to carry your essentials. A small clutch or crossbody bag can be a stylish choice, allowing you to keep your hands free while enjoying the festivities.

Consider a bag with enough room for your phone, wallet, and any other items you might need.

Footwear Options for Men

Men, too, have plenty of options when it comes to footwear for White Night on a cruise. A classic pair of dress shoes, such as oxfords or loafers, can elevate any outfit and give a polished look. Opt for a comfortable pair that will allow you to dance the night away without any discomfort.

For a more casual look, men can consider wearing boat shoes or stylish sneakers that will still look sharp while providing comfort. Remember to choose a pair that matches the overall style and formality of your outfit.

Completing Your Look

In addition to shoes and bags, accessories play a crucial role in completing your White Night look. For women, consider adding some statement jewelry, such as a bold necklace or chandelier earrings, to add a touch of glamour. A stylish hat or hair accessory can also enhance your overall look.

For men, accessories like a stylish watch, cufflinks, or a pocket square can add a sophisticated touch to your outfit. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different accessories to create a unique and personalized look.

Remember, White Night on a cruise is all about dressing up and enjoying the festivities. So, have fun with your outfit choices, express your personal style, and get ready to dance the night away!

Attending white night on a cruise is the perfect opportunity to participate in a fun shipboard tradition. By following the event dress code and wearing light colors or white, you can look stylish while enjoying an evening of dining, dancing, and celebrating with new friends.

Just remember the key rules around formality levels and restrictions when planning your white night cruise outfit. With the recommendations above for flattering white dresses, jumpsuits, button-downs and more, you will shine bright alongside your fellow well-dressed passengers!

What Do People Actually Wear On White Night? Real Photos, Examples and Suggestions

“White Night” parties on cruise ships seem to be getting more and more popular, I’ve been to lots.

In this article, we find out which cruise lines hold “White Night” parties, discuss what to wear if you do decide to go – and whether you actually need to wear white at all.

white dress for cruise night

Which Cruise Lines Regularly Hold “White Night” Parties

  • Azamara – Hold a white night event on the pool deck with dinner and entertainment, weather permitting of course!
  • Norwegian Cruise Line – Hold “White Hot Parties.” These are often held by the pool, or in the ship’s nightclub. On some ships, the White Hot Party is called the “Glow Party.” People tend to still dress in white though.
  • Royal Caribbean – Hold a whole range of themed parties – Common themes offered may include Black and White Night, 50’s/60’s/70’s/80’s, Country Western, Masquerade Ball, and Toga Parties.
  • MSC – Regularly hold White Night parties – and other themed parties such as 70s nights and Carnival parties.
  • P&O – Call their White Night evening “Bianco.” It is usually a dance party held on the top deck. They also hold a similar “White Out Event” for children
  • Princess Cruises – Sometimes hold a “White and Gold” themed night.
  • Cunard – Hold Black and White, Red and Gold, Masquerade or Roaring 20s themed nights.
  • Carnival – “White Hot Night” parties are held, which they describe as “an amazing night of dancing, giveaways, fun and more!”
  • Costa Cruises – White Night parties, or “La Notte Bianca” don’t get going until well after 11 pm and carry on late into the night!

When I cruised on Costa Smeralda I discovered that many of the Italians onboard ate late, and then partied late into the night! It was quite a culture shock! Find out all about that cruise here:

Do You Have To Take Part In Cruise Ship White Nights?

No, you don’t have to take part in any White Night Parties if you don’t want to.

It is your holiday, don’t participate in anything you don’t want to. (Apart from the Safety/Muster Drill of course!)

Choice is one of the great things about cruising. If you don’t want to dress up on formal night, eat in the buffet. If you don’t want to join in with deck parties, find some other entertainment onboard that will suit you better. There is so much variety!

I normally just pack a white dress, then I can wear it if I find my cruise has a White Party – but I can wear it on any other night too.

What Should I Wear For a White Night Party?

Don’t feel you need to be dressed head to toe in white, wear as little or as much white as you feel comfortable with.

I usually wear a white dress, men often wear a white shirt and chinos – no need to go out and buy white trousers, unless you are going to get plenty of wear out of them at other times. It seems like rather a waste of money to buy things just to wear once.

No one is going to be judging your outfit!

This is the Dress I always pack for White Night :

GRACE KARIN Women’s Sleeveless V-Neck A-line Dress

This one is from the brand Amazon, and I love it because: – It has two layers so it isn’t see-through. – It’s very comfy and perfect for ‘white night’ which most cruise lines have!

Azamara seems to be the Cruiseline who takes “White Night” most seriously.

They offer smaller ship cruising with most of their ships holding around only 700 passengers.

Weather permitting, they serve a meal under the stars, accompanied by entertainment.

Unfortunately, the only time I have cruised with Azamara, the weather wasn’t good enough to eat al fresco, so I don’t feel like we got the full Azamara White Night experience.

I would love to Cruise with Azamara again though.

Join Azamara officers and crew for our signature dinner and entertainment event hosted al fresco on the pool deck (weather permitting). With an array of delicious food and engaging entertainment, your White Night experience will almost certainly be one of the most memorable times from your voyage. And don’t forget to bring something white to wear for the evening. March 10, 2024

This post may contain affiliate links, which means I’ll receive a commission if you purchase through my links, at no extra cost to you. Please read  full disclosure  for more information.

If you’re going on a cruise you will have several different theme nights on your vacation. A common theme you’ll see is white night.

For this theme everyone will dress in white clothing and usually they’ll have events, parties and music you can go to.

It’s always a fun time and you should definitely participate if this is a theme night on your cruise.

Looking for outfit inspiration? Want a pretty dress or upscale jumpsuit? There are options below! Want just a white shirt or skit? We’ve got those too!

Maybe you just want accessories to go with your look? Check out the bottom of the post for some white night outfit accessories!

This post is all about white night on a cruise.

Commonly Asked Questions:

Do i have to dress in white.

No! When going on a cruise it is not mandatory to participant in theme nights.

However, if you would like to you definitely can and you should check out the outfit choices I’ve linked below to take with you on your cruise!

How do I know if I’ll have white night as a theme on my cruise?

There are several ways to find out what themes you’ll have on your cruise vacation.

The first way would be to check out your cruise line’s website. Sometimes they will list the different types of themes they offer on different length cruises.

Another way you could find out is if you worked with a travel agent. You can always ask them if they have the theme night information or if they can get it for you.

My favorite way to find out theme nights and any other information I might need would be to join a Facebook group. You can join for your specific sailing or even a larger group of that specific cruise line/ship.

I highly recommend joining these groups, you can learn so much and ask any question you want about your cruise. It’s also a great way to “meet” people before your cruise that will be on the same vacation as you.

Do I have to wear fancy white clothes?

No! The great thing about a cruise is you can wear whatever you want (within reason that is appropriate of course).

If you would like to dress up for white night or see that it is more of an upscale theme night depending on what cruise line you’re on, then you can.

However, you don’t have to and could just wear a casual white top if that’s what you want to do/are more comfortable in.

Will there be events at white night?

Yes! Cruises have so much to offer.

When it comes to theme nights you’ll probably see parties, live music events and more.

MSC is a good example of a great party for white night. Usually on the pool deck but may be other areas depending on the ship and weather. MSC has a huge party with a DJ where everyone is dancing, talking, drinking, etc.

If you have an upcoming MSC cruise you should check it out and dress for the occasion.

White Night Outfit Inspiration:

I do want to mention that everything below might not show up in white for the outfit preview. Sometimes even if I share the link from Amazon in white, it doesn’t stay that way.

12 Affordable Dresses Perfect for a Cruise Formal Night

There might not be a single event on a cruise that can cause as much stress as formal night.

And all that stress comes from one simple question: What can I wear?

To be fair, it can be a tough question to answer. Over the years, formal night has decidedly become more casual. While it used to be just for formal evening gowns and tuxedos, these days almost anything except for shorts (and sometimes even those) will pass the dress code.

That said, we think you definitely should dress up for formal night. The night isn’t just about you — it’s for everyone headed to dinner in the ship’s dining room. Not everyone gets a special occasion to dress up. Being able to get dolled up and head to dinner with other glamorous-looking folks helps to set the atmosphere.

To learn more about what sort of dress is and isn’t allowed during formal night you can read our article here.

In the meantime, we’ve rounded up a dozen formal dresses — all of which would be perfect for cruise formal night. You can find all of these dresses on Amazon, which typically offers free returns/exchanges if something doesn’t fit just right.

Note: The links to Amazon used below are affiliate links. Should you make a purchase, we receive a small percentage of the sale at no extra cost to you.

Know what types of clothing, shoes and accessories are best to wear on a cruise.

When it comes to cruising in style, packing the right attire for every occasion is essential. Including a few key versatile items on your cruise packing list will prevent your suitcase (and the limited closet space in your stateroom) from becoming overcrowded – and keep you looking appropriate for all events.

Although most cruise lines outline their suggested dress codes in the FAQ sections of their websites, be sure to also review the specifics of your cruise itinerary. Not only will the destination and weather factor into what you should wear on your cruise, but you'll also want to know if formal nights require black-tie attire, themed dress parties need costumes or shore excursions necessitate unique clothing or footwear.

Whether you'll be lounging by the pool or attending a glamorous dinner, our list of must-have items and suggestions from industry experts will help you navigate dressing for your next cruise vacation.

For relaxing sea days, prioritize comfort above all else. Depending on your planned activities, any of the following casual options are considered acceptable attire:

  • Skirts or skorts
  • T-shirts and tank tops
  • Breezy lounge pants
  • Bathing suits
  • Cover-ups
  • Sun hats or baseball caps

Travel writer Jill Schildhouse always packs her VOTEPRETTY sundress . "This is my go-to cruise workhorse," says Schildhouse. "It's light and breezy, and the pockets come in very handy." She adds that the sundress can be worn to casual dinners on the ship or on shore excursions, and it can even double as a swimsuit cover-up. "I've taken it all over the world and it always arrives wrinkle-free," she says. Schildhouse has received many compliments on this classic sundress, which is available in multiple colors.

Sheri Griffiths, host of YouTube series CruiseTipsTV , suggests wearing comfortable, broken-in shoes on a cruise. She recommends avoiding brand-new footwear during your voyage to prevent blisters and daily discomfort. A basic sneaker can be worn for just about any cruise itinerary, from Alaska to the Caribbean . Griffiths says, "We love these Adidas Stan Smiths because they wear in quickly and have a timeless style."

In the evening, most cruise ships adopt a dress code in their main dining rooms and specialty restaurants that incorporate smart-casual or resort-wear attire. The following clothing choices will suffice:

  • Maxi dresses
  • Elegant tops
  • Long- or short-sleeved button-down shirts
  • Polo shirts
  • Blazers and ties (typically optional, unless otherwise stated)
  • Shawls or wraps
  • Closed-toe dress shoes
  • Sandals or heels

Colleen McDaniel, editor-in-chief at Cruise Critic, shares her best advice for cruise footwear. "I always pack my Rothy's shoes for any cruise because they're infinitely comfortable, work as both a formal and [an] informal shoe and can be tossed in the laundry if they get dirty." She notes that she has several pairs, but two of her go-to styles are The Point and The Ballet Flat . McDaniel adds that the shoes work in every occasion, from strolling along the ship decks to perusing cobblestone streets on shore. "I bought both [pairs] 5 years ago, and they look as new today as they did out of the box despite literally hundreds of hours of wear," she says.

Jason Leppert, founder of YouTube channel Popular Cruising , always packs his signature Hawaiian shirts to wear day or night. He says, "I love the RSVLTS collection because they can play casually with shorts or more dressy with slacks for dinner."

Formal Nights

white dress for cruise night

While more casual these days, cruise formal nights still call for a bit more sophistication and style. Appropriate options include:

  • Cocktail dresses
  • Evening gowns
  • Dress shoes

Ashley Kosciolek, senior cruise writer for The Points Guy, always packs a gown or a fancy cocktail dress for a formal night. "I work from home and don't have a reason to dress up otherwise, so I look forward to it." Still, Kosciolek is a firm believer that travelers should wear what is most comfortable for them while on vacation. She adds, "My dinner won't taste any better or worse based on what others are wearing."

Mikkel Woodruff, editor of cruise site Sometimes Sailing , always brings her Omega Sailing Bracelet on cruises. She says, "I like to bring jewelry that reminds me of the ocean and being on the sea." Woodruff appreciates the bracelet's versatility, noting how easily it can go from shore excursions to formal evenings to everyday activities.

Shore Excursions

When heading off the ship for a shore excursion, opt for comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear to make the most of your adventures on land. Consider packing the following items:

  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Mesh water shoes
  • T-shirts or tank tops
  • A waterproof jacket

Freelance travel writer David Swanson shares his favorite versatile cruise shoes. He discovered a comfortable pair of Danner multitasking shoes that worked for dinners, casual events and multiple days of cycling on a recent European cruise. "I didn't think I'd find something to do dual duty, but I love this comfy pair from Danner, an outdoor brand [that is] new to me but has been around since 1932," says Swanson.

Paul Thornton, host of The Joy of Cruising Podcast , always packs his Coofandy linen shirts and shorts for hot Caribbean days and breezy cruise ship evenings. "I love Coofandy because they enable this senior to look 'youthful' on the beach and excursions," says Thornton. He adds that the brand is also his go-to retailer for White Party-themed nights on board.

Tips on Trips and Expert Picks

Travel tips, vacation ideas and more to make your next vacation stellar.

Cruise Line Dress Codes

Dress codes can vary significantly from one cruise company to the next, so it's a good idea to check with your specific line before filling up your suitcase. Once you're on board, be sure to read the daily program for reminders about the dress codes required at the events and dining venues during your voyage.

Azamara Dress Code

  • Daytime: Fairly casual attire is suitable throughout Azamara 's ships during the day. However, baseball caps, distressed denim, tank tops and bathing suits cannot be worn at Discoveries, Aqualina and Prime C restaurants (and shoes are required).
  • Evening: At night, women typically wear casual dresses, skirts, pants, capris, blouses and knit tops, while men are welcome to wear collared golf and polo shirts, shorts and pants. Sport coats are optional. Note: There are no official formal nights on Azamara's voyages.
  • Themed Nights: Be sure to pack an all-white outfit for Azamara's signature White Night dinner and deck party.

Carnival Cruise Line Dress Code

  • Daytime: Pack casual, comfortable attire to sail with Carnival Cruise Line , such as T-shirts, polo shirts or relaxed tops paired with shorts, capris, khakis or jeans. Athletic wear paired with a lightweight sweater or jacket are suitable for those looking to stay active.
  • "Cruise casual" attire for men typically suggests longer dress shorts, pants or jeans and a collared polo shirt. Women usually wear sundresses, blouses, skirts, dress shorts and capri pants.
  • "Cruise elegant" typically translates to dress slacks, dress shirts and sports coats (suggested) for men, with some wearing suits, ties or tuxedos. Women choose dresses (party or cocktail), pantsuits and elegant skirts with blouses, while some may wear evening gowns. Kids should follow the adult dress code, opting for school dance- or party-appropriate attire. Note: Jeans, men's sleeveless shirts, shorts, T-shirts, sportswear, exercise clothes, baseball hats, flip-flops and bathing suits are not permitted. The number of "cruise elegant" evenings varies based on the length of the cruise.
  • Carnival Journeys cruises feature a "Throwback Sea Day," where guests can relive the '80s by day (outfits included) and dress up for a themed Captain's Cocktail Party by night.
  • Cruises between early December and Christmas Day feature an "Ugly Sweater Contest."
  • Costumes are suggested for Halloween cruises between the end of September and October. However, when choosing a costume, keep in mind that full masks are prohibited (masks covering half of the face are allowed).

Celebrity Cruises Dress Code

  • Daytime: During the day, smart casual resort wear is suitable throughout Celebrity Cruises ' ships. (Think: sundresses, shorts, polos and button-down shirts paired with sandals, low heels and loafers.) Bathing suits with cover-ups, T-shirts, tank tops, hats and sunglasses are only appropriate poolside. Cruisers should avoid wearing these items in the dining areas.
  • Evening: Most evenings, guests are expected to wear comfortable yet tasteful attire. This entails dresses, skirts, long pants or jeans, stylish tops and button-down shirts. Shorts and flip-flops do not meet the evening dress code. Depending on your voyage, there will be one or two formal nights that require "evening chic" wear. Passengers can dress to impress in formal gowns, tuxedos, cocktail dresses, dressy jeans or blazers.

Costa Cruises Dress Code

  • Daytime: During the day, Costa Cruises ' passengers may wear casual clothing like T-shirts, shorts and sundresses. Beach clothing and flip-flops are not permitted in ship restaurants. Depending on the itinerary, some shore excursions may have specific dress codes.
  • Evening: Most nights require resort attire; however, Costa hosts one or two Elegant Evenings per cruise, when men may wear dark suits or tuxedos and women can wear evening gowns or cocktail dresses.
  • Themed Nights: Costa recommends that guests pack white clothing for its White Night events and white, red and green clothing and accessories for its Italy-themed evenings.

Cunard Line Dress Code

  • Daytime: Shorts, T-shirts and sundresses are appropriate daytime wardrobe options on sailings with Cunard Line . Swimwear is acceptable by the pool but should not be worn in indoor dining areas.
  • Evening: In the evenings, passengers are asked to wear smart attire, which includes dress shirts and trousers for men, and cocktail dresses or sophisticated tops and skirts for women – similar to what you'd choose for dinner at a trendy restaurant or a special occasion. Voyages lasting seven nights host at least two Gala Evenings, during which guests are requested to adhere to a more formal dress code.
  • Themed Nights: Gala Evenings employ themes ranging from specific colors (such as black and white or red and gold outfits) to the roaring '20s to masquerade balls.

Disney Cruise Line Dress Code

  • Daytime: On Disney Cruise Line sailings, cruise casual attire is acceptable during the day; outfit options include sundresses and shorts and tees. Swimwear and tank tops are not permitted in dining venues.
  • Evening: After the sun sets, polished attire like collared shirts and jeans without rips are acceptable. Bathing suits, tees, tank tops and sports attire are not allowed. Adult-exclusive dining venues on Disney ships call for elegance; formal or semiformal wear is recommended.
  • Themed Nights: On three- and four-night sailings, there is typically a pirate-themed deck party and one optional dress-up night for guests of all ages. Sailings lasting seven nights or longer add one formal and one semiformal night, when women may wear a formal dress or pantsuit and men can opt for a suit or dress pants with a jacket.

Holland America Line Dress Code

  • Daytime: Plan on wearing casual attire aboard Holland America Line 's ships during the day. When indoors, guests must wear shirts, cover-ups and footwear.
  • Evening: On most nights, smart casual clothing is acceptable. However, in table service restaurants, shorts, bathing suits, distressed jeans and tank tops are prohibited. Grand Voyages cruises host formal nights, when suits and dresses are appropriate.
  • Themed Nights: Once per cruise, Holland America hosts an Orange Party in celebration of King's Day. Pack your favorite orange clothing and accessories for this event, which honors the cruise line's Dutch heritage.

MSC Cruises Dress Code

  • Daytime: Guests of MSC Cruises dress fairly casual during the day in T-shirts and shorts.
  • Evening: Collared shirts, dresses and tailored pants are expected at night in the main dining rooms, specialty restaurants and entertainment venues. There is one optional Gala Night, when varying levels of elegance are acceptable. Guests should wear what makes them feel comfortable, ranging from tuxedos or ball gowns to dressy jeans and polo shirts.
  • Themed Nights: MSC hosts a White Night Party (where guests wear all white) and a Sunshine Party, where guests don cheerful colors.

Norwegian Cruise Line Dress Code

  • Daytime: During the day, plan to wear cruise casual attire like summer dresses, jeans, khakis, shorts and casual shirts on Norwegian Cruise Line voyages. At the buffet and outdoor restaurants, swimwear can be worn with a cover-up and footwear. In dining rooms and specialty restaurants, Norwegian does not permit tank tops for men, jeans with rips or tears, flip-flops, baseball caps or visors.
  • Evening: In Norwegian's upscale specialty restaurants, smart casual attire is the norm. Women can wear slacks, jeans, dresses, skirts and tops, while men should opt for jeans or slacks, a collared shirt and closed-toed shoes. Children ages 12 and younger may wear shorts in all restaurants. On each cruise, there is one particular "Dress-Up or Not Night," when guests can wear fancier clothing (if they choose).
  • Themed Nights: Pack an all-white outfit for the White Hot Party and formal attire for Norwegian's Night Out.

Princess Cruises Dress Code

  • Daytime: In Princess Cruises ' restaurants and public spaces, casual resort wear is required. Shoes must be worn in the dining areas, and pool or beach attire, ball caps and frayed jeans are prohibited in restaurants.
  • Evening: On most nights, smart casual attire is acceptable in restaurants. However, on formal evenings, women may wear evening gowns, cocktail dresses or elegant pantsuits; while men may opt for tuxedos, dark suits or dinner jackets with slacks. The number of formal nights per cruise depends on the length of the sailing.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises Dress Code

Women typically dresses, pantsuits or slacks paired with blouses or sweaters; a collared shirt and dress pants for men is the norm, with the option for sport jackets and ties. On cruises lasting 16 nights or longer, there are two evenings when guests can choose to wear formal or semiformal attire. Wardrobe choices include dark suits and cocktail dresses or tuxedos and gowns. Note: On the last night of every voyage, the dinner dress code is "relaxed casual" to accommodate guests packing for early morning flights.

Royal Caribbean International Dress Code

  • Daytime: A relaxed, casual style is acceptable during the day on cruises with Royal Caribbean International . However, swimwear should be limited to the pool deck.
  • Evening: On most nights, guests wear smart casual attire, which includes collared or button-up shirts, dresses, skirts, blouses and pantsuits. Jackets, sports coats and blazers are encouraged but not required. On formal evenings and for the Chef's Table dining experience, cruisers are expected to wear black-tie attire, which includes tuxedos, suits with ties, cocktail dresses and evening gowns. The number of formal nights per cruise depends on the length of the sailing.

What Is a White Night on a Cruise Ship?

By Michael Ferguson

A white night on a cruise ship is an event that takes place once a month, or every few months, depending on the cruise line. It is a night of celebration, entertainment, and a chance for passengers to mingle with each other in an exciting atmosphere.

The night often includes live music, dancing, food and drinks specials, and games. At some cruises, during the white night event there are also special discounts on certain items or services.

The term “white night” originates from the fact that many people choose to dress in all-white garments for the evening. This is done to create a festive atmosphere and show solidarity among the passengers. Many people find that dressing in white gives them a sense of unity with their fellow passengers and allows them to feel like they are part of something bigger than themselves.

The white night events usually begin early in the evening and last until late at night. These nights are typically filled with music from different genres such as jazz, blues, pop, rock, country and more. There is often a live band playing throughout the evening as well as DJs who spin a variety of music for everyone to enjoy.

In addition to live music and entertainment, many cruises also offer special deals during their white night events. These may include discounts on drinks or food items or even freebies such as t-shirts or souvenirs. Passengers can also take advantage of activities such as karaoke nights or trivia nights that are held on board.

White nights on cruise ships provide an exciting atmosphere for passengers to celebrate and have fun together. The all-white dress code helps create a sense of unity among passengers while they enjoy live music performances and take advantage of special discounts and activities. White nights can be enjoyed by all ages and provide an unforgettable experience on any voyage.

What to Wear on Formal Night on a Cruise

What to Wear on Formal Night on a Cruise

Have you booked a cruise that has a formal night or two? Formal night on a cruise can be a highlight of your vacation! But if you don’t know what to wear on formal night, no worries—here’s everything you need to know.

white dress for cruise night

Read on to find out all about cruise formal night—from how to find out how many nights will be formal, what the formal night dress codes are for the major cruise lines, and what to do if the idea of dressing up on a cruise just isn’t your thing.

I’ve even put together some cruise formal night outfit ideas for men, women, and kids to inspire you!

Be sure to read my cruise formal night FAQ at the end for quick answers to the most frequently asked questions about formal night on a cruise.

What is formal night on a cruise?

Formal night on a cruise ship is the evening when passengers don dressy clothing for dinner, photos, and special activities. The main dining rooms usually will serve an elevated menu, with fancier options like filet mignon, prime rib, or lobster tail.

Some cruise lines have the Captain’s welcome party the evening of the first formal night, with the opportunity to meet the captain and mingle with the other guests.

white dress for cruise night

Your cruise line might use an alternate name for formal night, like “Evening Chic”, “Gala Evening”, or “Cruise Elegant”, but it’s essentially the same thing—a night when most passengers dress in their finest clothing for dinner and evening festivities.

Why do cruise lines have formal nights?

During the golden age of ocean liners, guests staying in first class cabins were required to wear formal attire after 6 PM in all public areas of the ship. In the early decades of modern cruise travel, women wore evening gowns and men donned white tie in the evenings.

Learn more: The Story of the First Cruise Ship: SS Prinzessin Victoria Luise

In the 1960s, when standards of dress became less formal in general, cruise lines began to alter their dress codes to appeal to a more modern aesthetic—as well as to the less well-heeled guests who were now able to afford a cruise vacation.

Today, many passengers enjoy having the opportunity to dress up once or twice during a cruise. In an increasingly casual world, this tradition is unique to the cruise industry!

Do all cruise lines have formal night?

If you really don’t like dressing up, you might want to choose one of the cruise lines that doesn’t have formal nights. These cruise lines don’t have a specific formal night with dressy attire required in the main dining rooms:

  • Norwegian Cruise Line
  • Virgin Voyages
  • Oceania Cruises
  • Paul Gauguin Cruises
  • Regent Seven Seas

However, most of these cruise lines do have “formal optional” evenings, when many passengers do dress up in the evening—but it’s not required.

What should you wear for formal night on a cruise?

When people ask me what to wear for formal night on a cruise, I usually advise them to dress like they would for an elegant evening wedding—a dark suit and tie for men, and a cocktail dress or dressy evening separates for women.

You’ll often see people dressed to both ends of the “formal” spectrum on many ships—some wear tuxedos and full-length gowns, and others will wear chinos and a dress shirt or a more casual dress.

On more traditional cruise lines like Holland America or Cunard, you’ll notice the general level of dressiness to be a bit higher. But as long as you’re within your cruise line’s dress code, feel free to be as dressy or as casual as you prefer.

Where to find the formal night dress code for your cruise line

The idea of “formal night” may conjure up different images to different people, so the cruise lines have come up with guidelines to help cruisers understand the dress code expectations before they pack for vacation.

Here are links to the formal night dress codes for many of the major cruise lines:

  • Carnival Cruise Line – look for “Cruise Elegant”
  • Celebrity Cruises – look for “Evening Chic”
  • Costa Cruises – look for “Formal”
  • Cunard Line – look for “Gala Evening”
  • Disney Cruise Line – look for “formal” and “semi-formal”
  • Holland America Line – look for “Formal”
  • MSC Cruises – click on “Gala Evenings”
  • Princess Cruises – click on Clothing Recommendations and look for “Formal”
  • Royal Caribbean – look for “Formal nights”

Where is formal night attire required on the ship?

If you’re opting out of formal night attire, you don’t need to stay in your stateroom all night! Formal night dress code is generally only required in the main dining room during dinner. (Some cruise lines also require formal attire in specialty restaurants on formal nights).

The buffet’s dress code will always be more casual, and of course no one expects you to lounge on the Lido deck in your suit or cocktail dress!

However, in the central area of the ship, especially after 5 or 6 PM, you’ll see most people dressed up for pre-dinner photos or cocktails. If I’m skipping formal night (or I’m having a late dinner and haven’t changed yet), I tend to avoid the atrium or the busiest part of the ship. You can feel a bit out of place in a t-shirt and shorts when everyone else has changed into their nighttime best!

Renting formal wear for your cruise

If you’d prefer to rent formal wear for your cruise, some cruise lines do offer tuxedo rentals. You’ll usually need to book this through the cruise line at least a couple of weeks before you sail.

Links and phone numbers for cruise line tux rentals:

  • Carnival: Call the Fun Shops at 1-800-522-7648
  • Cunard (tuxedo rental on board, no need to pre-order. Type “tuxedo” in FAQ search bar to see pricing)

Some cruise lines, including Disney and HAL, traditionally partnered with a company called Cruiseline Formalwear. Unfortunately, this company closed permanently during the pandemic. Instead, many cruisers have been renting tuxedos from local formal wear shops and carrying them on board.

For cocktail dress or gown rentals, you can check sites like Rent the Runway or Armoire (they’re especially great for maternity formal wear rentals). You’ll be able to rent a formal dress for far less than buying, and they take care of the cleaning for you.

How many formal nights will there be on my cruise?

When you’re deciding what to wear for formal night on a cruise, it’s a good idea to know how many formal nights your sailing will have.

In general, cruise lines that have formal nights will have two each week on a seven-day cruise. On short cruises (less than five days), there often isn’t a formal night.

Check with the cruise line or your travel agent to see how many formal nights are planned for your particular voyage.

Having photos taken on formal night

Once you’re all dressed up for the evening, why not plan to have some formal portraits taken to commemorate your cruise?

On most mainstream cruise lines, the roving photographers are ready to snap your pic in locations around the ship. But during formal night evenings, the photo team is out in full force!

They’ll often set up in the atrium or main public area with professional lighting and backdrops to capture your family or group in your formal night best.

Unlike a photoshoot on land, you won’t need to pay to have your pictures taken (although some cruise lines do have a portrait studio where you can book a photo session for a fee). You’ll only pay for the photos that you like, and prices are reasonable for formal shots.

A single 8″x10″ will run you about $25, and you’ll be able to purchase a discounted photo package if you want several prints to take home.

How to keep your cruise formal wear from wrinkling

Many cruisers worry about their dressy clothes for formal night wrinkling from being stuffed in a suitcase while traveling to the cruise port. You do have some options that will keep your formal wear looking good when you’re ready for that special night!

Although you can’t pack your own clothes iron or steamer (they’re a fire hazard on ships), some cruise lines do have passenger laundry rooms with an iron you can use to touch up your outfits.

But if your formal wear is too delicate for an iron, I have a few tricks you can use to get the wrinkles out:

  • Use wrinkle release spray and hang to dry
  • Use a home dry clean kit in the laundry room dryer
  • Hang your outfits in the bathroom with a hot shower running for a few minutes

Can you skip formal night on a cruise?

If dressing up just isn’t your thing, you can absolutely skip formal night on a cruise! The main dining room will have a formal dress code, but you can always have dinner at the buffet or order room service.

Many cruise lines have a “smart casual” dress code in their specialty restaurants, making them a popular choice on formal nights for those who want to avoid dressing up. But double-check dress codes—some cruise lines (Carnival for example) have the same dress code in their specialty restaurants as in the MDR on formal nights.

Cruise formal night FAQ

Do you have to dress up for formal night on a cruise?

As long as you don’t have dinner in the main dining room or a specialty restaurant with a formal night dress code, you don’t need to dress up for formal night. Instead, you can eat at the buffet, a quick-service restaurant, or order room service.

Do men have to wear a jacket and tie for cruise formal night?

Some cruise lines do require a jacket and tie to enter the main dining room on formal night. Check your cruise line’s  formal night dress code  for details.

Do women have to wear a dress for cruise formal night?

Cruise lines that have formal nights don’t specify that women need to wear a dress on those evenings. Dressy evening separates, like an elegant top paired with a matching skirt or trousers are fine for formal night.

Do kids need to dress up for formal night on a cruise?

If your cruise line has formal nights, kids who are eating in the main dining room with their parents will need to adhere to the formal night dress code.

Which cruise lines don’t have formal nights?

Several cruise lines don’t have formal nights, including Norwegian Cruise Line, Virgin Voyages, Azamara, Oceania Cruises, Paul Gauguin Cruises, and Regent Seven Seas. However, there may be an optional dress-up night on your sailing.

Can you buy or rent formal wear on the cruise ship?

Many cruise lines offer tuxedo rentals, but you should reserve your tux at least several weeks before you sail.

I’d love to hear your opinions about what to wear for formal night on a cruise! Do you go all out, do the minimum, or skip it altogether? Let me know in the comments below!

I was wondering if it would be inappropriate to wear a simple wedding dress during formal night. My fiancé and I are eloping but the cruise is our honeymoon and much of his family will be there! I thought it might be fun! Nothing too poofy, just a lace sheath dress. TIA!

Monday 14th of March 2022

Hi Darby, I think a simple white lace sheath would be perfect for formal night on most cruise lines! As long as it doesn't actually look like a wedding dress, you'll be fine. Congrats on your upcoming wedding!

I always enjoy formal night when we cruise. We don't dress up often at home so this is always special and so much fun!

What a great idea! I feel like not many people think about needing such a formal outfit for a cruise!

Hi Alex, lots of new cruisers don't know about formal night on their first cruise! Thankfully it's optional - you just need to eat dinner on those nights in a casual-friendly environment. But hopefully lots of first-time cruisers read this post so they know how to join in on the fun! :D

I like the fact you don't have to attend a formal evening if you don't want to - i'd be the one in the buffet or getting room service ;-) Although I may be tempted to bring a cocktail dress for a long cruise!

Hi Hannah! I totally get skipping formal night (I sometimes do if I'm tired)! It's great that it's not mandatory and you're free to do your own thing :D

I love formal nights on the cruise, definitely my favorite theme night

Hi Elyse, I agree! I love a chance to get dressed up and enjoy the fancier meal choices on formal nights. Thanks for stopping by!

Designer Cruise Dresses

If you’re going on your first cruise, figuring out what to wear for the formal events can feel like a daunting task. There’s the Captain's dinner, dinner in the main dining room, and other snazzy cruise events you want to stand out for.

To avoid sticking out among the crowd, it’s important that you find the right cruise formal wear to bring with you on your exciting vacation. Understanding the different cruise events and the cruise line’s dress code is key before stocking up on garments.

Nevertheless, participating in formal events on cruise ships is fun! For most people, it allows them to dress up and wear designer cruise dresses they wouldn’t typically wear.

Formal Cruise Event Attire

Before you buy clothes to wear, it’s best to look at the dress code your particular cruise line has set. Cruise ships have hundreds of events happening every night and certain events may have different codes than others. Some dress codes can be “resort casual,” “smart casual,” or “formal” for certain events or daytime wear.

Typically, there are one or two dinners aboard the ship that require formal wear, mainly dinners. Depending on how long your cruise is, there will be somewhere between one and three dinner nights where formal wear is the dress code. Other events that may require you to dress up formally could be the casino or shows.

When a cruise line has a “formal” dress code requirement, it typically means men wear suits or tuxedos and women wear  gala dresses and  evening gowns .

Styles To Bring On a Cruise

Cruise lines and luxury cruise lines are your place to make a statement with the type of designer cruise gowns and styles you bring along with you. Staying on top of the trends is another factor to consider when finding the right cruise ship dresses.

For spring or summer colors, the trending tones seem to be pastel colors, specifically  soft pink and  blue tones . Colors to stay away from onboard a cruise ship are  brown or warm tones relating to this color.  Black , however, is an exception.

Navy , white, and lighter colors are the perfect tones to choose for your nautical voyage. When it comes to patterns and styles, off-the-shoulder dresses, halter tops, spaghetti straps, and sequins can add beauty to your sophisticated look.

Cruisewear for men: What guys should pack for a cruise

Mature man using laptop on ship deck

Perhaps one of the most understated joys of cruising is that you only have to unpack once. The challenge lies in what to pack in the first place. While some may say that guys have it easier than women, choosing the right cruisewear for men can be just as tricky.

No matter the destination, men will need certain clothing essentials for a cruise that they might not need for other vacations. This can range from attire for formal or themed nights to the right outfits for a range of activities in port.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

If you're wondering exactly what you need to wear on a cruise — or need to assist your husband, father, son, partner or male friend — we've got you covered with helpful specifics on the perfect cruisewear for men. Read on to discover what guys should pack for their next cruise.

What should men wear during the day on a cruise?

white dress for cruise night

Most cruises are casual getaways during the day. Pack and dress for the kind of activities you'll enjoy on board, whether it's lounging at the pool (a rash guard, swim trunks, flip-flops and a hat), sweating it out in the gym (athleticwear and sneakers) or hanging out with a book or card game in a lounge (shorts or jeans and a comfortable top).

Daytime dress can be a bit more elevated on Europe cruises, as well as ships with older or wealthier clientele. This more refined style can best be described as resort casual, where you'll find mostly polos and collared shirts during the day. Linen or khaki pants or Bermuda shorts complete the look.

Don't forget to pack appropriate clothing for activities in port. You'll want to dress in layers, bring a hat for sun protection, a jacket or vest for cool mornings or windy afternoons, and wear sturdy shoes for hikes or sneakers for exploring a town. Tote around beach flip-flops for a quick change if you're mixing up beach time with excursions that require more walking.

What's acceptable attire for men for dinner on casual evenings?

Across all cruise lines, table service dinners will always feel more elevated, often the only time of day when a dress code is clearly communicated. That said, casual evenings have become more casual, especially on the big-ship lines – which can be a relief to men who don't want to schlep their workweek suits on vacation with them.

As a general guideline, if you're at a table service restaurant for dinner (whether it be the main dining room or a specialty restaurant on board), men should dress in a collared shirt and long pants. Jeans tend to be acceptable on casual evenings, as long as they're not riddled with holes, and on some lines, like always-relaxed Norwegian Cruise Line, a nice T-shirt is fine. (A fitted T-shirt with a jacket over it is never a problem.)

What you can't wear, according to the dinner dress code on most lines, are bathing suits, cutoff jeans, sleeveless shirts and baseball hats.

Shorts are an ambiguous, often frowned upon, option for evening attire. Most dress codes won't specifically prohibit shorts, leaving it up to the individual. A pair of chino, pleated or linen shorts can suffice for a more refined look, especially when paired with a collared shirt. Cutoffs, denim, cargo shorts and sports shorts at any seated, table service dinner are a no-go.

As for shoes, sneakers can be permissible on nonformal nights, but footwear like beach flip-flops are often prohibited.

While teens should emulate the grown-ups for dinnerwear, most cruise lines don't fuss about the dress code for younger boys. If you can't get your kid into a polo shirt and khakis, a clean shirt and nonathletic shorts will suffice.

If you'd rather spend your evening in gym shorts and flip-flops, the buffet and other fast casual or counter-service venues will have more relaxed dress codes at night. Or, you can order room service and enjoy dinner in your bathrobe.

Are formal nights still a thing? Will I need to bring a tuxedo?

white dress for cruise night

Most major cruise lines hold formal nights, usually twice on a weeklong sailing. These days, the theme is more "dress your best" or "elegant" than strictly formal. Even on big-ship cruise lines, guests find it fun to don a more upscale look, pose for a professional photo shoot and enjoy dinner, drinks and perhaps a show in style.

Formal nights on most lines don't mean black tie. On casual lines, such as Carnival and Royal Caribbean, men can get away with a button-down, long-sleeve shirt, khakis, nice shoes and no tie. On more upscale lines, guys should pack a suit or at least a sports coat and slacks. Ties are usually optional.

When in doubt, pack a jacket you can always take off if no one else is wearing one.

Some cruise lines, however, skew a bit fancier. Cunard features black-tie galas on its sailings that are often themed (think Roaring '20s and Masquerade Ball). P&O Cruises typically has signature black-tie evenings, and many smaller luxury lines (including Silversea, Seabourn and Regent) will host black-tie evenings throughout extended sailings.

While full tuxedo regalia on black-tie evenings is encouraged (satin lapel, pocket trim, satin side stripe down the leg of the trousers), a dark suit and necktie pass muster.

Also, culturally appropriate formal attire is always an option, such as Scottish kilt suits or military dress uniforms.

If you're traveling with family, boys and teenagers are required to dress in accordance with the guidelines for dining at table service restaurants on formal nights as well, but the stakes are lower. The minimum requirement for kids is nice slacks and a collared shirt. Teens should opt for dress shoes, but younger boys can get away with sneakers.

If you're taking family photos, tuxedos, suits, blazers and ties are not required but add flare and personality to a look. Get creative with kids who prefer comfort; put babies in a tuxedo-print onesie and young boys in an adorable sweater vest on formal evenings.

On some lines, such as Norwegian Cruise Line , elegant night is always optional.

Do guys need to dress up on theme nights?

Many cruise lines will have themed evenings or parties where you might want to dress the part. If you're attending a themed cruise (such as a gay cruise or music cruise ), be prepared for costume parties on multiple nights.

Popular theme nights are wide-ranging, though the most recurring are tropical parties (Hawaiian shirts encouraged), '80s nights and white nights (all-white attire).

Disney Cruise Line passengers regularly dress up for its hallmark Pirate Night. Virgin Voyages ' Scarlet Night encourages guests to don red attire.

Themed attire on theme nights is not required for dining and is opt-in fun. If you're traveling with a group, organizing matching costumes or outfits can enhance the fun and make for great vacation photos. Check with your cruise line about which theme nights you should expect.

What are the best cruise clothing and accessories for men?

white dress for cruise night

Need to add a few new pieces to your wardrobe before your cruise vacation? Here are our picks of cruisewear staples for men.

A classic Hawaiian shirt

If you're sailing on a tropical itinerary, you're going to want to make sure you pack at least one Hawaiian floral shirt. The Columbia Men's Tamiami Short-sleeve Shirt is a top choice, with SPF 40 sun protection and nice ventilation.

A shirt for hot days in port

At sea, you've got the benefit of the ocean breezes, but tropical ports can get sweltering hot, especially in the summer months. Opt for the Vineyard Vines Men's Destin Stripe Sankaty Performance Polo for its moisture-wicking and quick-drying fabric, along with its SPF 30 sun protection.

A pair of travel pants

The best pair of travel pants balance comfort and function and are acceptable on board and in port. The 33,000ft Men's Waterproof Pants are surprisingly comfortable, breathable and have a nice flexible give to them. They also feature a commendable 10,000mm waterproof rating, great for coverage if you get stuck exploring in the rain.

A pair of sandals for most occasions

From the pool deck to the streets of a port, the right pair of sandals signify vacation. The sophisticated yet practical Ecco Men's Flowt Luxe Slide Sandals are an ideal match for days spent walking, yet have an elegant design that can fit well into a smart, casual dinner on board. If the dinner dress code has a strict no-sandals policy, the Cole Haan Men's 2.Zerogrand Penny Loafers are a great nautical alternative.

The ideal layer for windy nights on deck

When you're out at sea it can get windy, especially at night. Pack The North Face Men's Cyclone Windbreaker Jacket , which features a compact, lightweight and durable design. The jacket is windproof, water-repellent and has UPF 40+.

Water shoes to protect your feet

If you're planning for any water-based adventures on your cruise, a high-quality pair of water shoes will help protect your feet. Merrell Men's Wildwood Aerosport Water Shoes are light, comfortable and breathable. They also offer great traction on slippery rocks, shell-ridden beaches and the ship's decks.

The best men's cruise travel accessories

  • Accessory storage: Keep your neckties crisp with this sturdy case for storage and travel. Or, fit all your formal night accouterments in this men's accessories storage and travel case .
  • A compact on-the-go bag: The Bellroy Mini Sling Bag is great for roving both the ship and port with enough room to store your cellphone, ship pass and a few essentials such as lip balm, sunscreen and hand sanitizer.
  • Shoe maintenance: These quality shoe bags keep your street and deck-worn shoes separate from your clothes. SneakErasers are a great travel accessory to buff out any scuff marks you may pick up on your journey.
  • Staying hydrated: A reusable water bottle is essential on a cruise, especially while in port. The Hydro Flask water bottle is a favorite for its durable design and temperature retention. Cruise lines allow reusable bottles, though they must be empty when boarding.
  • Express yourself: Stretch beyond your normal style — you're on a ship! Cruise life gives you the freedom to add some character and flair to your look, so pack some fun accessories like these nautical cuff links , colorful lapel pins or a flashy hat .

Bottom line

It's not "anything goes," but you'll find more flexibility than ever when it comes to cruise line dress codes. When in doubt, it's better to be overdressed than underdressed, especially when arriving for a seated dinner. Better to pack the tie and jacket and ditch them if no one else is wearing them than to risk awkward conversations with the crew or side-eye from other diners if you're not in compliance with the attire policy.

And if casual is the only way you wish to dress on vacation, know you can always go to the buffet or order room service, and you won't go hungry for want of khakis and a button-down shirt.

I'd traveled by car , bus, train , and plane , but boats of any kind were completely new to me until April 2022, when I went on my first cruise to the Caribbean.

I embarked on a seven-night voyage on one of the world's largest cruise ships, Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas . We sailed to Roatán, Honduras ; Cozumel and Costa Maya in Mexico; and Royal Caribbean's private island in the Bahamas.

While it felt surreal to be on such a large vessel in the middle of the ocean, I made some mistakes that made my trip more expensive and less enjoyable than it could have been. Here's what I'll do differently next time.

Booking a seven-night trip for my first cruise experience was an ambitious decision that made me feel overwhelmed.

Cruises can be as short as two nights or as long as several months . When booking my cruise, I thought one week would be a good amount of time to get used to the lifestyle.

While initially in awe of the ship and the journey ahead, I struggled with sleep and motion sickness every day. I was grateful to be out in the ocean, but by the fourth day, I felt ready to go home and overwhelmed by the remaining time I had on the ship.

Since cruising was a new form of vacation and transportation for me, I wish I had booked a shorter trip for the first time.

<p>The length of the trip would have been more bearable if I had a friend with me, in my opinion. </p><p>While there were many social activities and friendly cruisers who loved to chat with random strangers like me, I still found myself feeling lonely on the ship. I took this cruise by myself, but if I were to do it again, I'd travel with someone else.

The length of the trip would have been more bearable if I hadn't traveled solo .

While there were many social activities and friendly cruisers who loved chatting with random strangers like me, I still felt lonely on the ship. I longed to talk with someone who knew me or share my experiences in new places with a loved one. Being surrounded by so many families and groups of friends made me wish I could be with mine.

When I cruise again, I'll bring a crew.

<p>For $2,000, I slept in a 179-square-foot <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/royal-caribbean-wonder-of-seas-cruise-cabin-photos-2022-4">stateroom</a> on deck eight. My cabin had a private bathroom, a king-size bed, and an ocean view.</p><p>It was a mid-tier room — a step above <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/carnival-cruises-interior-room-royal-caribbean-ocean-view-cabin-photos-2022-10">interior staterooms</a> with no window, a step below staterooms with a balcony, and two steps below a suite. I quickly realized this was the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-you-shouldnt-book-room-at-front-of-cruise-ship-2023-7">wrong room</a> to book.</p><p>Since it was at the very front of deck eight, I felt constant motion in my room. I'm prone to motion sickness, and I unknowingly booked a room where movement on the ship felt the strongest.

For $2,000, I slept in a 179-square-foot stateroom on deck eight. My cabin had a private bathroom, a king-size bed, and an ocean view.

It was a mid-tier room — a step above interior staterooms with no window, a step below staterooms with a balcony, and two steps below a suite. I quickly realized this was the wrong room to book.

Since it was at the very front of deck eight, I felt constant motion in my room. This made sense to me after talking to seasoned cruisers on the ship, several of whom told me that the front of the ship was one of the worst places to be for feeling motion. They said that higher decks in the middle of the ship feel calmer and more stable.

Some nights were rockier than others. On the roughest nights, I heard and felt a similar sensation to thunder beneath me every few minutes. Loud thumps and heavy vibrations in my room sounded like large pieces of furniture falling down. The first night this happened, I feared the worst, but over time, I realized that this was a normal aspect of cruising — but one I would likely never get used to.

Next time, I'd choose a room in the middle of the ship.

If I had remembered to bring earplugs, I might have gotten more sleep.

Because I heard sounds that reminded me of thunder every few minutes some nights, it was nearly impossible for me to sleep.

If I had earplugs with me, I may have been able to rest more during my trip. One night, it was so loud that I decided to sleep with my earbuds in, but since I sleep on my side, I woke up with one earbud painfully pushed too far into my ear.

<p>Cash is a must on cruises, I learned. While you can tip the cruise ship members with a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-get-into-chase-sapphire-airport-lounge-2024-2">credit card</a> at the end of your trip, you need cash to tip the bus drivers and tour guides during excursions at the ports.</p><p>There are ATMs on the ship, but they have withdrawal fees, <a href="https://www.royalcaribbean.com/faq/questions/onboard-atm-cash-service" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">according to the Royal Caribbean website</a>.</p>

I forgot to bring cash, which was essential for tipping bus drivers and tour guides during excursions.

There are ATMs on the ship, but they have withdrawal fees, according to the Royal Caribbean website .

<p>I like to be comfy, so I was dreading formal nights going into this cruise. </p><p>I brought one fancy dress with me to wear anytime I needed, but I learned after the first formal night, that the dress code wasn't strictly enforced. I regret wasting space in my suitcase on dresses for formal nights since dress codes were not enforced.

I hate dressing formally, but I knew cruises had formal nights going into the trip, so I brought one nice dress with me to wear whenever I needed it. However, after the first formal night, I learned that the dress code wasn't strictly enforced. People wore a variety of outfits, from evening gowns to T-shirts.

I relaxed my look on the other two formal nights but felt like I wasted the limited space in my suitcase with the dress. Next time, I won't bring it with me.

I missed some shows because I didn't make reservations for the week as soon as I boarded the ship.

The cruise ship was full of activities and restaurants that I could go to, but some restaurants, like the specialty ones, as well as all the shows on board, required reservations that I made through the Royal Caribbean app.

I found that it was often hard to get day-of reservations for many shows I wanted to attend. Waiting until the last minute to plan for these events was a mistake.

For example, the circus-like acrobatic water show in the AquaTheater seemed to be the most popular and hardest reservation to get. I tried to get one on the day of the event but couldn't find any availability until a show two nights later.

Next time, I'll make all my show reservations as soon as possible.

<p>One of the unique things about cruising is that most meals, snacks, and drinks are <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/belize-resort-changed-opinion-on-all-inclusive-stays-2024-2">all-inclusive</a> as part of the cruise rate.</p><p>But on large ships like Wonder of the Seas, more than a dozen restaurants with specialty offerings, like sushi, are not included and incur additional charges, either as a one-time fee or by the dish.</p><p>While show reservations aren't available until you board the ship, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/royal-caribbean-wonder-of-the-seas-best-restaurants-2022-5">specialty restaurants</a> can be reserved as soon as you book your trip. Before my trip, I reserved all specialty restaurants, but I wish I hadn't booked so many once I realized the included restaurants were delicious and diverse.

One of the unique things about cruising is that most meals, snacks, and drinks are all-inclusive as part of the cruise rate.

But on large ships like Wonder of the Seas, more than a dozen restaurants with specialty offerings, like sushi, are not included and incur additional charges, either as a one-time fee or by the dish.

While show reservations aren't available until you board the ship, specialty restaurants can be reserved as soon as you book your trip. I booked specialty restaurants for nearly every night of the cruise.

I was surprised that some of my most delicious and satisfying meals were in the restaurants included for guests. There were a handful of buffets with different types of food, and the main dining room served a three-course meal with varying menu items each night.

Every single one of my cravings was satisfied by these complimentary options. One of the best meals I had was in the main dining room.

Since I booked so many specialty restaurants, I didn't have time to try all the buffets or eat in the main dining room more than once. Next time, I'll save money and eat more included meals.

At the ports, I booked two excursions with beach stops and felt like I wasted time.

At each port stop, guests have the option of booking excursions through the cruise line for an additional cost. These include tours and activities like hiking or zip-lining. At two of the port stops , Cozumel and Costa Maya in Mexico, I booked excursions that included a few hours of beach time, where guests got access to a beach club with lounge chairs.

In Cozumel, I went to a beach club in Tulum after a long tour of Mayan ruins. It was nice to relax and enjoy some of the clearest ocean water I had ever seen.

The next day in Costa Maya, I went on a very brief tour of the island before going to the beach. Since I felt like I got my beach fix the day before, I found myself wishing I could spend the time exploring more of the island.

Next time, I'll book only one excursion with beach time.

For the end of my cruise, I made the mistake of booking a night flight, which left me in the airport for 14 hours.

At the end of the cruise, passengers disembarked in the morning upon returning to port. But when booking my cruise , I learned that the scheduled port arrival time wasn't the exact time I'd be off the ship.

As Business Insider previously reported, a cruise ship's scheduled arrival time is when the ship docks at the port. Before passengers can get off, there's an inspection that can take "anywhere between 20 minutes to an hour or more," the article says.

To be safe, I booked a night flight , since I'd rather wait at the airport all day than miss my flight home.

I definitely overdid it. I arrived at the airport at 9 a.m. for my 9 p.m. flight, which ended up being delayed two hours.

Next time, to avoid spending 14 hours in an airport, I'll book an afternoon flight for the end of my cruise.

<p>I don't think cruising is my preferred form of travel, but a lot of these mistakes had a huge influence on my experience. </p>

Ultimately, I left the ship thinking that cruises were cool but not for me. But I might have had a different conclusion if I hadn't made these mistakes.

I don't think cruising is my preferred form of travel, but a lot of these mistakes had a huge influence on my experience.
