Every year without fail I add “drink more water” to my list of potential New Year’s resolutions. It’s an easy one to implement into my lifestyle while still feeling like an accomplishment, plus the health benefits aren’t so bad either. I find myself with clearer skin and less fatigue, though the subtle bragging rights of always feeling hydrated are an added bonus. As a firm believer of the “emotional support water bottle” — a water bottle you bring anywhere and everywhere — I also think having a bottle that makes water easy to drink makes all the difference. When I got my hands on the coveted 40-oz Stanley Cup Quencher I couldn’t predict just how impactful it would be to my hydration journey, but alas, my life has changed for the better.

When I call this cup “coveted” I don’t say so lightly. The Stanley Cup Quencher is the drinking receptacle of Target haul TikTok and mommy blogger dreams . Remember the VSCO girls of yesteryear ? It’s that same cultish obsession for this water bottle, only a little more refined. And I’ve never been happier to join a bandwagon — I’ve been using my Stanley every day since I got it back in November without fail. According to the brand, the Stanley Quencher became popular with mainstream shoppers in 2021 and has seen a 275% increase in sales year-over-year. The online hype around the product may be a factor in those growing numbers: Countless users on TikTok have talked about the cup in detail , or have casually touted it in their daily vlogs, leading to a rise in interest and that wildly long waitlist whenever it sells out (which is often).

The shape of the Stanley Cup makes it easier to carry around throughout your day since it has a durable handle you can hold it by when you have a hot beverage inside. When I’ve used other water bottles without handles, I’ve had to purchase additional straps or lids to make them easier to carry around on the go. For me, though, the straw feature is easily the best part since so many other reusable cups come with straw caps that are hard to clean, making them more susceptible to bacteria. Stanley’s straw can be easily removed and the lid is easy to clean by hand or in the dishwasher, and you can purchase bottle accessories like extra lids and straws if you want to soup yours up more.

Is The Stanley Quencher Tumbler Cup Worth The Price?

IMHO, the Stanley Quencher is worth the price due to its functionality — but that’s if you can get it via retail rather than resale. It goes for $40 from sites like Target, Williams Sonoma, REI, and Amazon but when sold for resale the price can get pretty hefty. Some sellers have it posted for anywhere from $60 to $100 on sites like eBay. Pro tip: If you’d prefer to try out Stanley’s products before committing to the full-sized cup, you can choose a 14-ounce , 20-ounce , or 30-ounce size for $20, $25, and $30, respectively.

Competitors like Hydroflask and S’well sell similar-sized bottles for $50 and above, so the price tag of Stanley Quenchers are in line with the market and, as someone who has used both of these competing brands, it’s a cut above the rest. Hydroflasks can be purchased with additional straw lids but they’re more of a nozzle, which makes them difficult to clean in all of the nooks. My 40-oz Hydroflask could also never fit in a car cup holder and was a nuisance to carry around without the purchase of an additional strap . S’well bottles are great when it comes to temperature regulation, but I’d always drop mine because of its lean shape and would have to BYOS — bring my own straw — for optimal drinking.

My Hydration

Refilling my Stanley Quencher Tumbler at least three times throughout the day has become a part of my routine that requires no extra thought. Since I use the straw setting the most, it’s easy to reach for my cup on my desk, nightstand, or side table without having to twist off a heavy metal cap to take a sip. Plus, the straw function makes it nearly spill-proof when I take a sip. Before hopping on the Stanley bandwagon, there were days when it would hit 3 p.m. and my head would start pounding because I definitely had not had enough water to drink that day. Now, drinking at least 40 ounces of water before 10 a.m. is second nature and I can’t see myself ever going back.

Final Verdict

Stanley’s 40-Ounce Quencher Tumbler Cup has truly transformed how I drink water. Rather than fumbling around with a metal twist-off cap, I can easily sip from the straw when at home or out and about. I now have two full-sized Quenchers so I can switch off between the two when one is in the dishwasher — so drinking at least three bottles per day has become part of my routine. Now if only finding it in stock was just as easy…

Why a New Stanley Cup Is Causing a Frenzy at Target

A limited edition Stanley stainless steel tumbler has caused mayhem at Target stores across the U.S., as buyers rush to get the cups.

Released Dec. 31 as part of Target’s “Galentine’s Collection,” the Cosmo Pink and Target Red tumblers quickly sold out online and in stores. The demand is high—a recent video showing a crowd of people rushing to get the cups off a display shelf at Target went viral on TikTok. The video has been watched more than 20 million times, and the hashtag #StanleyTumbler has accumulated over one billion views.

This cup is not to be confused with Stanley's Starbucks collaboration cup, sold in the Winter Pink color and also causing a frenzy at Target stores. PEOPLE reports that Starbucks will not be restocking the collaboration cups, which has sold out at some locations.

The Stanley brand has been around for over 100 years and the steel vacuum-insulated water bottles found success on TikTok, seeing a $676 million increase in revenue from 2019 to 2023, according to CNBC . The 40-oz Quencher tumblers, subject of the current craze, range in price from $45 to $55.

The videos have captured the attention of a confused audience.  “Am I missing something?” one person asked in the comments section. “Is it everyone’s goal to collect as [many] colors as you can or? What happens with the other cups you have? Do they just retire every time you get a new cup?”

Stanley’s 40-oz Quencher tumblers have existed since 2016 and were not immediate standouts. The brand was more known for its staple product: the classic green water bottle . The company released a redesigned Quencher bottle with different colors in 2022. A representative for Stanley told Today.com , “In 2022, there was a 275% increase in sales of the Quencher year over year, and U.S. sales of all sizes of the tumbler were up 751% in the year to date.” Last year, the tumblers took off on TikTok with the rise of #watertok , when creators filmed themselves making flavored water concoctions in their large Stanley cups. 

It’s nearly impossible to scroll through the app now without seeing at least one video of a creator displaying their vast collection of water bottles or trying to sell a customized tumbler. There are limited edition bottles, like the Starbucks collab that just dropped, but they’re not the only brand to work with water bottle company. Olay joined forces with Stanley to drop a limited edition of “Blue Adventure” Quenchers and singer Lainey Wilson also collaborated with the brand.

VICE reported seeing a $29,000 Stanley cup on the re-sell website StockX, which doesn’t seem to be available anymore, but there are plenty of listings for hundreds of dollars.

In November, Stanley gained attention after a woman posted a video showing that her Stanley cup survived her car catching on fire—and still had ice in it. The video racked up over 92 million views and the company’s president even offered to gift her a new car.

While the high demand for the cups suggests the Stanley fervor will not die down, Business Insider reports their popularity may be hitting capacity . The cups are “on their way out. This is peak, Stanley. There’s no up from here,” youth consumer trends analyst Casey Lewis told the publication. Part of the reason, according to Lewis, is the Stanley’s unusual trend pattern: the tumblers began as a favorite among primarily millennial women before becoming popular with Gen Z. “Most trends start with cool youth, and then once they trickle down (to younger kids) and up (to adults), the cool youth move on,” she said.

But #watertok will flow on. A new water bottle brand, Owala, is already making its way into the mainstream. The Stanley cup may have replaced the popularity of Hydroflask water bottles (even though some of us will never let go of ours ). But everything has an end.

My Go-To Stanley Cup Isn't the Viral Tumbler, and Shoppers Agree That It’s 'Highly Underrated'

The lightweight design makes it ultra-portable.

If you’re of this planet, you’re well aware by now that Stanley 40-Ounce Quencher Tumblers have all but taken over the kitchens (and hands) of people everywhere. Its popularity has grown so much so fast that Stanley put the brakes on restocking certain popular colors to avoid even more mayhem. My kitchen cabinet contains a blue 40-ounce tumbler , but that’s not the one I reach for every day. While it keeps my drinks cold and helps me hit my H2O goals, it’s a bit heavy, it can’t be tossed in my handbag, and pursing my lips around the straw can cause more mouth wrinkles.

I am a fan of the brand, however, so instead, my go-to bottle is its 20-Ounce AeroLight Transit Bottle that’s $35 at Target and doesn’t get the attention it deserves. While it holds half the amount of liquid, that’s a more practical option for me thanks to its easy-to-transport design. I can throw it in my purse when I’m on the go, and it has an airtight locking lid that prevents leaks and folds down flat. I tested it by holding it upside down and shaking it while full and not a single drop came out.

Stanley 20-Ounce AeroLight Transit Bottle

Plus, unlike carrying around the oversized tumbler, as much of a status symbol as that may be, the AeroLight Transit is made with the brand’s featherweight spun-steel technology, which is a fancy way of saying it’s 33% lighter than the stainless steel used in Stanley’s other drinkware, including the tumbler. I can confirm it’s incredibly lightweight for the size, even more than smaller bottles I own. 

It’s also super slim, so while it doesn’t have a carrying handle, I can easily and comfortably fit my petite hands around while holding it and drinking. The narrow design takes up little space in my water bottle cabinet when it’s not in use. It still features the same cold/hot insulation technology, so my ice water stays icy for up to 40 hours, and my hot tea stays warm for up to 8 hours. 

I love that when you lift the lid, it’s tricky to tell how the water will come out, but as soon as you tilt it up, it has the right amount of flow to quench my thirst. The lid also snaps all the way back so it lies flat while I’m drinking and doesn’t rub against my nose. Oh, and I don’t have to worry about increasing my chance of getting wrinkles around my mouth thanks to the pursing of your lips motion required when sipping from a straw.

Shoppers who opted for this Stanley bottle over other cup designs also like that it’s “so convenient to carry and lightweight,” according to one who said it “fits easily into any cupholder, purse, backpack, or bag.” They also noted that it “doesn’t leak and keeps drinks cold forever.” Another reviewer calls the AeroLight a “highly underrated little gem.” They shared that it “cleans easily ,and the lid is so easy to unscrew.” In fact, it’s much less time-consuming to clean than other bottles thanks to its simple, two-piece design.

Sure, the Stanley tumbler is all the rage at the moment, inciting a fervent discussion about the Stanley vs. Yeti tumblers , and I agree that it has many positive features, but for practical convenience, I’ll continue to grab the brand’s 20-Ounce AeroLight Transit Bottle , which works just as well and has a design that best suits my needs. Why Are Stanley Quencher Cups So Popular, Anyway?

The Internet-famous tumbler had fans rushing to Target for a limited-edition Valentine’s Day color.

While many of us look at January 1 as a chance to leave the past behind, one thing carrying over from 2023 is the Internet’s obsession with Stanley Quencher cups.

Stanley stans camped outside and started hitting Target stores in droves starting on New Year’s Eve due to a limited-edition Quencher cup release available only at the Starbucks cafés located inside the big box store chain. The pair of new colorways included Target Red and a Valentines Day-ready Cosmo Pink, and sold out within a few days with the brands involved saying there are no plans to produce or stock any more once this batch was bought up. And, of course, as those cups quickly sold out, they just as quickly started to appear on eBay marked up into the hundreds of dollars.

So what’s the big deal with these big, colorful cups?

The History of The Stanley Quencher Tumbler Cup

While the Stanley company has been making durable drinking vessels since 1913, until 2020, Stanley’s best-selling product was its classic green carafe with a metal cup lid. The company’s bread-and-butter customers were people working on job sites and outdoor enthusiasts headed to the woods for camping or hunting.

The Quencher debuted in 2016 at a time when brands like Yeti and Hydro Flask were also on the water bottle market, still yet to find a trend-launching foothold. But the Quencher wasn’t an instant hit. In fact, CNBC reports that by 2019 the product was no longer being restocked. Around that time, a Stanley tumbler customer and cofounder of the shopping curating site The Buy Guide inquired about more Quenchers becoming available. Stanley responded with an opportunity to have the website buy up and market its own 5,000-unit run of inventory. They sold out within five days.

Following that success, the women behind The Buy Guide continued to encourage Stanley to consider this new, untapped online market of influencers, and as the company leaned in, things really took off. 2021 saw the sold-out Adventure Quencher return to a waiting list of over 30,000 eager buyers . According to CNBC, in 2019 Stanley’s sales sat at around $73 million. Since the Quencher craze has taken hold, it has since ballooned tenfold to $750 million annually. And with that expansion, its demographics have evolved from mostly male to mostly female consumers, taking the product out of just sporting goods stores and putting it into hipper, style-focused retailers.

Why are stanley quencher cups so popular.

Aside from the fervor, it also is, by so many satisfied customers’ accounts, a good product. As with other rough-and-tumble tumblers in the category, it features a vacuum-insulated, double-walled stainless steel, keeping hot drinks hot and cold drinks cold for hours. One sad-but-fascinating news story from 2023 featured a woman revealing that despite a fire destroying her car, her Stanley tumbler in the cupholder remained intact and still contained unmelted ice . (Stanley reached out after the video went viral and bought the woman a new car.)

The Quencher’s large, 40-ounce capacity (with smaller and still-larger options available, too) means fewer refills, and was especially primed to take advantage of the recent #WaterTok trend of zhuzhing up one’s H2O with flavors to encourage hydration.

But in addition to its size, there’s one feature that can’t be overstated for so many car owners: It fits in a standard cup holder. (Take it from me, someone who owns a car and has purchased more than a few larger water bottles and tumblers that weren’t so car-friendly and swiftly ended up collecting dust in the closet. It’s a feature.) The tight-sealing lid can be used with a reusable straw or sipped directly, and the cup also features a handle that doesn’t impede its cupholder compatibility. And in 2022, the brand released its updated Quencher H2.0 FlowState Tumbler with an improved lid that can seal completely.

Couple those practical attributes with its sleek aesthetic, the ability to choose dozens of Instagram-friendly colors, plus the option to custom-engrave your cups, it’s no wonder they’ve become a must-have item. And with retail prices anywhere from $40 to $55, they’re a relatively affordable must-have at that.

But the other “why” could be attributed to those aforementioned influencers and Stanley leaning in the affiliate marketing opportunities associated with the onset of social media-based e-commerce. Plus, in 2020, the company brought in Terence Reilly, the former chief marketing officer for Crocs, as its new president. And if you know anything about Crocs, you know that they’re all about colors, customization and limited-edition drops. It would seem the same basic tenets apply to both rubber clogs and vacuum-sealed stainless steel tumblers, thus Stanley was well-poised to harness its viral success.

What Are Some Stanley Quencher Tumbler Alternatives?

If you have your heart set on a certain color, you may experience a bit of heartache if thousands of others share your preference. Quenchers have sold out before and they’ll likely sell out again, especially those limited-run collaborations with designers and retailers. Stanley is collaborating once again with Target for all new exclusive Quencher 40-ounce tumbler designs set to arrive Aug. 4, 2024.

These new Stanley Quenchers are not just a Target collaboration, but specifically a collaboration with Target’s Hearth & Hand brand, a Target home brand created in collaboration with Magnolia by Chip & Joanna Gaines.

The upcoming Hearth & Hand™ with Magnolia x Stanley Quenchers come in three colors/designs: Cabernet Red, Deep Clay Orange and Macadamia Tan.

While it’s still in the dead heat of summer, these new Stanley colors seems to be more fitting for the upcoming Fall 2024 season.

So far, it seems that these Hearth & Hand™ with Magnolia x Stanley colors will not be available in the also popular 30-ounce Quencher , but it will extend to Stanley’s 12-ounce Stainless Steel Classic Legendary Mug .

Overnight lines and mayhem in stores. It's not a new iPhone — it's a Stanley tumbler

It seems that every so often, a different water bottle has its turn at being the cup everyone has to have. There was Nalgene, CamelBak, then S'well and, in the past few years, Hydro Flask — indicating the growing desire over the years for reusable bottles that are nonplastic.

Now, it's the Stanley cup's turn (not to be confused with the trophy awarded each year to whichever team wins the NHL championship). The brand's "Quencher" model in particular has had a resurgence among women and a younger clientele.

The fever was on display last week when people camped outside overnight at Target stores just to get their hands on a limited-edition "Stanley + Starbucks" collaboration. One man went so far as to jump the counter to steal a box of the pink glossy cups. And late last year, the limited-edition pink and cherry red tumblers caused mayhem at Target .

Ordinarily, the company's popular Quencher model costs an average of $45 , but resellers already are taking advantage of the hype by posting the limited-edition ones on sites like eBay for hundreds of dollars. Even the hashtag #stanleybrand has 65.3 million views on TikTok, while #stanleytumbler alone has 1 billion views.

So what's the craze behind these seemingly ordinary bottles?

The status symbol that hydrates

The Stanley brand boasts about the superior quality of its popular tumblers, which are double-wall stainless steel and able to keep liquids hot or cold for extended periods of time. The bottle is heavy — Quenchers can carry as much as 64 ounces of liquid — but it has the size to keep a person fully hydrated and also still be able to fit in a car's cup holder due to the tumbler's tapered bottom.

As a testament to its durability, last November a woman's car endured a fire and amazingly one of the few things that could be salvaged was her Stanley water bottle , which still contained ice afterward.

"I couldn't think of a better example of our product's quality," said Terence Reilly, president of Stanley 1913, in a video posted in response to the fire. The Stanley 1913 company offered to replace her vehicle as a result.

Aside from its durability, there is also a lot of emphasis on the enjoyment of drinking through various color options, one of the Quencher's big selling points. The tumbler comes in all variety of colors — from "tigerlily" and "rose quartz" to "charcoal" and "balsam glow."

According to Cassandra Gagnon, an interior strategist at WGSN , a consumer-trend forecasting company, Stanley also offers accessibility in its designs as well — whether it be via the ergonomic handle or its straw.

The Stanley Quencher tumbler is seen "not just like a water bottle," she says, "but a lifestyle and a wellness and a health item as well."

Even though its price tag might be high for some, "it's not a huge price point for a status symbol," says Gagnon, or for a collectible.

A fluid history

After the company's founding in 1913 by inventor William Stanley Jr., the niche that the brand originally found was primarily among men and those who frequented the outdoors. The company's classic thermos was used by pilots in World War II .

But in recent years, through affiliate marketing partnerships with influencers and blogs such as The Buy Guide , and by featuring new colors, Stanley was able to reach new target audiences — initially mostly working mothers — via its Quencher model.

In an interview with Retail Dive , The Buy Guide co-founder Ashlee LeSueur said, "Any brand on the planet that isn't marketing to the 25-to-50-year-old woman is really missing the mark."

Once the brand was able to reach Generation Z, its popularity hit a new level. "And those are also obviously statistically the generations and gender that are online and posting on TikTok and Instagram the most," says Gagnon.

The brand has been able to capitalize on its viral success. According to data reviewed by CNBC , Stanley's annual sales are projected to have surpassed a whopping $750 million in 2023.

But while we might see more chaos around the release of new Stanley Quencher colors, the long-term outlook for the company remains to be seen.

According to Ellyn Briggs, a brands analyst at Morning Consult , a risk comes with Stanley's marketing being so closely attached to TikTok, given the push by some lawmakers to ban the app. "If you live by TikTok, you can die by TikTok as well," she says.

Briggs said it might be wise for the company to create other touch points with consumers. Because, she says, "if TikTok goes away, the question is, does this culture [and] this world that they built there go away as well?"
