  • Learn the basics first. Use some of the  best ways to learn Spanish from home to get a good base in the language before you go abroad. Familiarize yourself with the pronunciation, basic grammar and introductory vocabulary. You’ll have an infinitely easier time in your chosen immersion program if you’ve conquered the initial linguistic hurdles.
  • Optimize your free time. Use your free time to attend concerts, plays and anything else that may contribute to your understanding of local culture and language. The more you get yourself out there, the more likely you are to interact with people and improve your Spanish conversational skills.
  • Consume Spanish media.  While it may be tempting to relax by watching an English series during your downtime, take advantage of all the authentic Spanish media around you. Read the local newspaper and make a list of new vocabulary. Watch the local news on TV or listen to the radio . Enjoy a telenovela or a Spanish sitcom and improve your listening skills.
  • Don’t get overwhelmed. The first time you’re truly surrounded by Spanish, you might feel overwhelmed. The key is to stay relaxed and not   beat yourself up when you make mistakes. Keep practicing at every possible opportunity, and you’ll soon see noticeable improvements.
  • Don’t speak English with your classmates. It can be fun to hang out with your classmates and a relief to speak English with them outside the classroom. But doing this all of the time will rob you of opportunities to improve your Spanish. Try to only speak in Spanish with them, and, even better, use your free time to socialize with the locals.

When you visit a Spanish-speaking country for your immersion program, you will have no choice but to use your Spanish skills constantly. Instead of working through grammar exercises and vocabulary-building activities, you will have to just speak the language.

Spanish will surround you 24/7. Simple things like getting something from the grocery store or finding your way home will require you to use your Spanish skills.

The value of learning from native speakers cannot be understated. You will not only improve your conversation skills, but you will learn how words and phrases are actually used. That information can be hard to glean from a textbook.

Spanish skill improvement is just one of the many benefits of using an immersion program. In addition to all the language-learning benefits, you will also be learning about the culture and the people through hands-on interaction.

It will help you to better understand an entire country in a meaningful way by making connections with its people.

Yes, immersion is the best way to learn Spanish because you’re learning and practicing constantly and using the language naturally. And if you’re experiencing immersion in a Spanish country, you’ll be hearing native speakers and their pronunciation every day!

It’s hard to say exactly how long it will take to learn Spanish because everyone learns differently and at different paces.  But if you’re living in a Spanish-speaking country and taking immersive Spanish classes, you can expect to speak basic Spanish in around three months.

You may feel frustrated if you can’t communicate as well as you’d like to at the beginning of your immersion experience. But if you stick with it and take advantage of all the opportunities to practice, you’ll quickly gain confidence speaking Spanish.

So many excellent programs! Which one you choose really boils down to your goals. Decide what you want to get out of a program and then start looking for that experience.

You should really give this a try if you have the opportunity. It will change your Spanish—and maybe even your life—for the better!

If you've made it this far that means you probably enjoy learning Spanish with engaging material and will then love FluentU .

Other sites use scripted content. FluentU uses a natural approach that helps you ease into the Spanish language and culture over time. You’ll learn Spanish as it’s actually spoken by real people.

FluentU has a wide variety of videos, as you can see here:

FluentU brings native videos within reach with interactive transcripts. You can tap on any word to look it up instantly. Every definition has examples that have been written to help you understand how the word is used. If you see an interesting word you don’t know, you can add it to a vocab list.

The 12 Best Spanish Immersion Programs Worldwide

Students enjoy a local celebration in the streets

Table of Contents

Most people know that the experts recommend “immersion” in a language to learn it as quickly and as well as possible.

In this article, we summarize some places where you can do just that to begin – or perfect – your Spanish proficiency.

Plus, we have chosen places that are interesting to spend your time in – we bet you haven’t considered some of these.

Why do a Spanish immersion program?

Demand for spanish .

First, let’s look at the importance of the language itself. Spanish is an official language of the US, and companies need Spanish-speakers on their staff.

More than 20 million Spanish speakers are living in the US, and the US does extensive business with Latin America. Boost your employment options or improve your value to the company!

Learn faster through immersion

When you study and  live  the language, your progress is quicker. While you’re doing simple things such as shopping and eating with a host family, you’re internalizing the language and learning to  think in Spanish .

Experience life!

Learning a language through a travel experience is so much more rewarding than just sitting in a classroom in your hometown. Experience the language and culture, taste the food, see the local sites, chat with shop owners … you don’t regret experiences like that.

Immersive tours across Spain allow you to compare how you live to lifestyles in other cultures. This is why study abroad is considered a life-changing experience.

Study in Spain

As the country where the language emerged, Spain is often the first and only choice of travelers who wish to learn Spanish through immersion.

Spain offers many regions with temperate climates, a lower cost of living than much of Europe and a long tradition of teaching and promoting their national language.

Students have a wide range of courses that can be applied to their US general education requirements or Spanish majors. CC-CS also provides support for universities taking  faculty-led  trips throughout Spain.

There are also so many opportunities to immerse yourself in Spanish in the local community. Spanish Studies partners with a local  language academy, the Centro Norte Americano . They offer language exchanges, tutoring children opportunities, teaching practicums and more.

The Center hosted so many events throughout the semester that helped us get to know other people in our program while also being immersed and learning about Sevilla. Susana Guerrero, Saint Mary’s College ( Indiana)

Who is it for?

Most are  US university students   studying for credit , either in summers or short-term, intensive courses in January, May, June, or July. Beyond just language courses, university students can enroll in courses at two area universities for credits in additional areas of study.

With 50 years of experience with university students, CC-CS has launched a new summer program for  high school Spanish students  at a reasonable cost. The program includes morning immersion classes,  homestays  with nearby families, and activities and excursions.

What's Seville like?

Seville, as a destination, provides a warm-weather destination that is filled with all the iconic culture that you’d expect in Spain as well as delicious cuisine and nightlife. The city is not as diverse as its larger cousins, Madrid and Barcelona, so the Spanish language surrounds you at all times – great for learning and practicing! CC-CS is located in the heart of the oldest part of the city, with narrow streets that date back to Roman times.

Why choose this program?

  • 50 years of experience; many universities accept CC-CS courses for credit
  • Center is located in the historic heart of the city - an exciting environment
  • Historic building with classic touches from the south of Spain - interior patios with a fountain, beautiful ceramic tiles and natural sunlight
  • Extensive programming offered such as cooking classes, dance, parties and more
  • Many courses take students out into the city
  • Long-tenured and highly skilled teaching staff
  • Warm weather and culture of the Andalucia region
  • Wide range of programs, including even taking classes at two of Seville’s universities.

Spanish Immersion Program: LITA

Svq Elena Guillen 2019 Seville Fall Integrated Studies

  • Program Location: Rural communities and smaller pueblos throughout Spain.
  • Required Spanish Level: Intermediate to advanced students (U.S. students in Spanish 3 and above)
  • Eligible Students: High school students ages 14-18. LITA does not work with students who have graduated from high school.
  • Program Terms & Dates: 3 and 5-week programs; beginning late June through July

LITA programs are real academic immersion experiences in a small group context (12-14 students per group). All programs focus around a homestay experience with families in a small/medium-sized host community, either in northern Spain or southern Spain, depending on the program a student chooses.

LITA chooses host families meticulously, matching students individually with their host families based on shared interests and compatibility. During the homestay, students can elect to participate in a volunteer internship with a local business in their host community or take conversation focused language classes while completing an independent project on a cultural topic of a student’s choosing.

Before and after the homestay, students spend the remaining weeks of each program exploring, as a group, other rural areas of Spain, incorporating various unique cultural explorations, outdoor experiences, and other adventures off the beaten path.

LITA designs its program itinerary to provide an authentic and personal immersion experience. While students do spend the final few days in either Barcelona or Sevilla (depending on the session a student chooses), the majority of time on all LITA programs focus on more rural experiences, something LITA believes is key to a successful immersion experience.

LITA works with smaller student groups of 12-14 students, allowing access corners of the country where students can truly experience daily life in Spain, not only as visitors but also as genuine participants. LITA programs tend to attract motivated students who will embrace this participatory and active learning environment. Students apply to LITA’s programs independently, mainly from schools around the U.S., and occasionally from other countries abroad.

The goal of all LITA’s programs is for students to take significant strides forward with their language skills in an immersion environment removed from English speaking tourism in Spain, and arrive at an appreciation of the diversity of cultures that exist regionally in Spain.

The most outstanding part of the trip was the three-week homestay. Living with my host family, experiencing their daily life, and interacting with their friends allowed me to expand my horizons in a way I never had before. Ila K.
  • High School Students
  • A language intensive, no-English program, in more off-the-beaten-path locales. Internships and personalized homestay family experiences in smaller communities make this a dynamic and personalized experience for each student
  • Connections and relationship building with local musicians, artists, chefs, and food producers

Most college students take a semester program (5 months) and take classes in the Spanish language as well as related courses – taught in Spanish – on cinema, history, and culture.

SSA also offers a “summer” (during Cordoba’s winter) program in parts of July and August that can be strictly language study and immersion. Students stay in homestays provided by SSA. All semester-long students take a multi-night trip to another region of Argentina, typically to the northern cities of Tucumán, Jujuy, and Salta.

Cordoba itself is a destination for those that love the outdoors. The city is a gateway to two sets of  sierras  (mountain ranges). To the North where visitors can hike, boat, visit colonial ranches known as  estancias  and enjoy traditional Argentine barbecues called  asados .

Don't be afraid to go out and make friends with Argentines, they're extremely friendly and social and a great resource both to learn and practice Spanish and to better become acquainted with their culture. Breezy, Austin College
  • North American college students
  • In our opinion, this is the best program for immersion in the language; you’ll hear very little English being spoken in Cordoba
  • Cordoba is the gateway to incredible outdoor recreation to the south and north - hiking, swimming, boating, horseback riding, and historical sites.
  • The university setting provides many opportunities for making local friends.
  • Many activities and excursions are provided in the program to get to know the area and the culture.
  • Being in the center of the country provides a very “authentic” South American experience.

Spanish Immersion Program: COINED Spanish School

Buenos Aires Spanish Immersion Program

  • Program Location: Buenos Aires
  • Required Spanish Level: Students can start with just a basic level of the language.
  • Program Terms & Dates: COINED generally has intakes every Monday and students only have a 1-week minimum stay required. Their website lists days or weeks of school closures, usually for end-of-year holidays or national ones.

COINED’s centrally located language school in Argentina’s capital, Buenos Aires, provides a range of options for adult learners to immerse themselves in Spanish. They offer everything from small groups (maximum of 9 per class) to private instruction. Their qualified teachers are used to a wide range of students whose needs can vary but who all need to immerse themselves in the language. Students can choose morning or afternoon classes from beginner to advanced.

My experience in Buenos Aires was great. The teachers are well-trained for each level. I liked the activities that the school offered. During my 4 weeks studying Spanish, I received a lot of amazing touristic spots info. Ricardo C. (from Brazil)
  • The flexibility makes it ideal for adult learners with a limited amount of time.
  • Located in the heart of cosmopolitan Buenos Aires
  • Well-established educational company
  • Seasons are reversed - enjoy warm weather during the Northern hemisphere’s winter
  • Intakes almost every Monday
  • Accommodation options of homestays (best for immersion), private apartments or student residences
  • Activities program for students

  • Required Spanish Level: Advanced (new options coming in the future)
  • Program Terms & Dates: January (semester), June (short term) and July (short term)

Participants take university content courses with local students, in Spanish and can transfer their credits back to their home universities. Doing content work – imagine taking History all in Spanish with native speakers – provides a tremendous boost to vocabulary and comprehension, and living in an immersive environment increases your speaking ability immediately.

Definitely reach out to the Puerto Rican students in your classes. I found that they were very willing to help the development of my Spanish and I also formed great friendships! Juliana Cooper
  • This is a program for American college students with at least a high intermediate level of Spanish. Students should confirm that their campus accepts Puerto Rico as a study abroad destination.
  • Close and convenient Spanish-speaking country

“Give yourself the gift of learning Spanish in a beautiful, interesting city!”

“Absolutely the best way to learn Spanish. Puebla is a gorgeous city and Fluenz makes sure you get to experience so much. Whether you’re interested in the food, culture, or history, Puebla has it all! Fluenz will bring the experience to life with private tours and exclusive experiences while building your Spanish skills”

“Fluenz language and cultural immersion in Chiapas”

“Spanish lessons from some of the most understanding and effective teachers I've ever had the pleasure to learn from. The reason I keep coming back to Fluenz is that they not only take care of every logistical detail of a wonderful trip, they also actively manage my Spanish journey . . . Is it a typical vacation? Or a typical language school? No, it's the best possible combination of both, and I love it. Chiapas in particular has had the most impact on me so far . . . Fluenz hasn't only significantly improved my Spanish, they've also given me experiences that I otherwise never would have had. For that I am grateful, and highly recommend them.”

Written February 17, 2024

“Amazing Spanish immersion program in Merida”

“Amazing Spanish immersion program. Fluenz has an incredible group of young, smart Spanish instructors and the colonial town of Merida is a great place to study as it was at one time one of the wealthiest cities in Latin America making it architecturally and culturally different from others. Fluenz's super cool, boutique hotel is right by Paseo de Montejo, a spectacular tree-line boulevard with Spanish colonial mansions, many of which have been converted into great restaurants. The added bonus of studying in Merida is you are a short drive away from some of the best Mayan sites in all of Mexico and Central America. With Fluenz we spent a half day at Uxmal, and Chichen Itza, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is also less than two hours away.”

Written December 22, 2023

“Great way to learn Spanish!!!”

“My experience with the Fluenz Puebla immersion was excellent and exceeded my expectations. Based on how much I improved over just a week, I think Fluenz has really perfected the formula for in-depth, in-person learning . . . I experienced a big leap in both my Spanish abilities and my confidence in speaking at the Fluenz immersion in Puebla. While I am very interested in visiting their other immersion locations in the future, if they offer the Puebla experience again I would be very tempted.”

Written December 4, 2023

“Just do it!”

“The Fluenz teachers are the BEST. They are all impressive, accomplished individuals, plus great teachers, fun, patient and kind. The class combined with the food and culture make it a fantastic trip. I take other classes from time to time with other programs and I compare them by saying all the other classes are like going to a community college and Fluenz classes are like going to an Ivy League University. Learning is so hard, so pick the best and have fun doing it.”

Written October 24, 2023

“An unbelievable week of Language and Culture!”

“Joining the Fluenz program, especially the Medellin Immersion, was the best decision I could have made for my Spanish! From the moment you step off the plane, you are greeted with the most hospitable team. From those very first moments, the coaches and program directors made me feel comfortable with my current level of Spanish which set me up with the right mentality heading into the week. The classes were tailored to meet me at my current level, and I saw amazing progress in such a short period of time. I felt this week not only gave me a boost to my current level, but it also helped me understand how to better learn Spanish. The immersion week gave me confidence I needed to continue my Spanish journey!”

Written October 16, 2023

“Fabulous learning experience”

“Fluenz's approach to helping you learn Spanish is unsurpassed, no matter how little or how much Spanish you already know. And Oaxaca is a magical place that overflows with vibrant art and delicious food.”

Written May 9, 2023

“Great Experience!”

“This program is EXCELLENT. I cannot say enough good things about how amazing this program is. The Spanish tutoring is excellent, all instructors are fantastic and have a very easy to follow standardized way of teaching. My Spanish definitely improved leaps and bounds. Additionally the excursions and activities planned really help you soak up all the culture that this amazing city has to offer. This is absolutely worth it. I am definitely a Fluenz customer for life and signed up for their Zoom instruction immediately after returning from this trip, and am planning my next Fluenz Spanish immersion experience for October of this year!”

Written April 25, 2023

“Best Spanish Immersion Ever”

“Oaxaca is just as amazing as all of the professors with Fluenz. The accommodations are fabulous, the Oaxacan food is amazing, and best of all Fluenz provided me with the most comprehensive and wonderful Spanish classes. I plan to return to Oaxaca again for another immersion sometime. The restaurant experiences are so fantastic, it is unbelievable. All of my professors are the most interesting and fun personalities to work with and learn from. I can't say enough about them and Fluenz.”

Written April 18, 2023

“Fluenz exceeded my expectations!”

“Fluenz was fabulous at every turn. I never expected my immersion week to turn into one of my most favorite experiences.”

Most Spanish language teachers end up teaching their native language by default. For a few, teaching Spanish is a true vocation. We’ve recruited all over the Spanish-speaking world to find uniquely talented individuals who love teaching, understand the workings of Spanish like no one else, and can explain the language in perfect English. Most of them speak three or more languages, have advanced degrees and come from as far away as Barcelona to be in Mexico City to make a difference to your learning.

Mexico City’s Magical Moment

Years of urban renewal have brought pedestrian friendly avenues, bike lanes, and much safer neighborhoods full of bookstores and cafes. The New York Times calls the city "more cosmopolitan than ever", proposing the "Mexican capital is primed to bewitch and baffle, challenge and enchant."

Beyond the recent changes, it's impossible to forget what makes Mexico the capital of Spanish-speaking Latin America: the Archeology Museum, Rivera’s and Orozco’s murals, Frida Kahlo’s house, Barragán's architecture, its millenarian markets, and most importantly, 20 million Mexicans who have made the place a vibrant meeting place of contrasts, languages and cultures for almost 700 years.

There is no better place in the world to experience the excitement of living, breathing Spanish culture and language.

Fluenz Spanish retails for $378.

Fluenz , a Legacy Of Results Since 2007

Founded by Sonia Gil, Fluenz offers the most comprehensive language-learning programs designed for English-Speakers anywhere. The company’s work is based on the proprietary linguistic models that reverse-engineer Spanish and other languages from the point of view of English.

The single most important factor to reach verbal fluency in Spanish is an understanding of the structures that sustain the language--its bones. Because so many of these elements are not intuitively recognizable to English-speakers, (i.e. feminine-masculine endings, complex conjugations, etc.) we are laser-focused on helping clients bridge this divide. We believe this lack of comparative approach is the single most important obstacle for English speakers trying to reach verbal fluency in Spanish.

The Fluenz approach breaks down Spanish into discrete elements that are best understood when explained in English - rather than the traditional approach based on generic practice after explanations of Spanish in Spanish. Once clearly understood, the elements that make up Spanish are best mastered through intense sessions of targeted practice.

Our high-impact sessions are tightly focused on getting clients to master the specific elements our assessment has shown can generate a breakthrough in their specific verbal fluency. We’ve eliminated random vocabulary and general conversation from learning in order to focus every single coaching hour into the specific and quantifiable linguistic tools that produce results.

After spending millions of dollars over a decade recreating an essentially human tutoring experience on an interactive platform, Fluenz Immersion brings this knowledge to one-on-one language instruction. Taking into account the learning experiences of over 160,000 clients and millions of hours of learning, we’ve created a personalized, high-impact training program to create breakthroughs for the Spanish of only 12 clients at a time.

Trip Itinerary

Day 1: depart from new york (jfk), days 2-4: madrid.

Welcome to Spain! We’ll begin our journey in its decadent capital. Hear the true, authentic castellano spoken in the streets and in the shops, taste local specialties like calamari and fried green peppers, and shop til you drop along the grand boulevards. You’ll get a tour of the Royal Palace (still in use by the Spanish monarchy) and relax in the Parque del Retiro just as Spaniards do on Sunday afternoons. Laugh at the street performers in la Puerta del Sol, Madrid’s version of Times Square, and get an ice cream in Plaza Mayor–formerly the site of several bullfights and beheadings. Take in some of the world’s best art at the Prado museum. And let’s not forget Madrid’s most famous resident–a trip to the Bernabéu Stadium to see the home of Real Madrid Football Club. By this time, you will have had 20 hours of Spanish practice–you’ll be amazed at how much you’ve learned and how well you’ll be able to talk to Spaniards!

DAYS 5-9: SAN SEBASTIÁN > BILBAO > ST. JEAN DE LUZ (FRANCE)

Next, we’ll head to rugged northern Spain–specifically, the Basque Country. Your Spanish teachers–all locals–will put you in classes based on your Spanish ability, and you’ll have classes just in the morning. Then, after lunch, you’ll spend the afternoon exploring all the sights of San Sebastián while practicing what you’ve learned in class. Chitchat with shopkeepers, order your own food at restaurants, and haggle with street vendors–you’ll be amazed at how much Spanish you can pick up by being totally immersed in the culture!

Since San Sebastián is widely considered to be the culinary capital of Spain, you’ll get to go on our unique “Tapas Tour” just like the Spanish do–hopping around to a number of different restaurants, and eating a little snack at each one. We’ll have a week full of adventure as we take surf lessons on one of the world’s best surfing beaches, ride a cable car up to the top of the mountain for a beautiful view of the harbor, and go for a bike ride around the city! If you don’t want to bike, you can explore by foot. Take a day trip over the border to France, where you’ll visit the quaint beach town of Saint Jean de Luz. Relax on the beach, explore this beautiful village, and even have crêpes for dinner.

DAYS 10-13: BARCELONA

Barcelona awaits you with its sandy Mediterranean beaches, lively boulevards, and traditional cuisine. Marvel at Antoní Gaudí’s spectacular architecture at Parc Guell, Casa Mila, and of course the Sagrada Familia Cathedral. Explore for yourself all the hidden twists and turns of the ancient Gothic Quarter, and take an off-the-beaten-path bike tour to learn the city’s secrets. You’ll even get to see the Magic Fountain of Montjuic, an amazing lights and music show, and of course go to Camp Nou to try to get a glimpse of Messi. A trip to Spain wouldn’t be complete without attending a Flamenco Show!

DAYS 14-16: VALENCIA

Sunny Valencia is where we’ll spend the second weekend of our trip! Soak up the sun on Valencia’s stunning beaches, go shopping in the neat boutiques, and practice your Spanish with the people you meet. And let’s not forget that this is the birthplace of Spain’s most famous food, paella! We’ll spend an afternoon at Valencia’s amazing Albufera rice fields, where paella rice is grown. Then, go for a relaxing sunset catamaran ride through the Bay of Valencia.

DAYS 17-20: ALICANTE

We’ll move on farther down the Mediterranean coast to the top summer destination region of Spain, Alicante. Spaniards take refuge from the heat of central Spain by taking a whole month of vacation and coming to their apartments here! You’ll get to try different water sports like stand-up paddleboarding, snorkeling, windsurfing, and even have the option of taking a scuba-diving course. After your classes in the morning, you’ll be able to practice your Spanish with scavenger hunts and other fun activities designed to get you talking to locals. We’ll also explore the beautiful towns around Alicante. We’ll ride a boat out to the beautiful island of Isla de Tabarca that is a Marine Reserve! You’ll have the opportunity to swim in the waterfalls of Fuentes de Algar. Finally, we’ll conclude your time in Spain with an elegant final dinner overlooking the ocean!

"A most sincere thank you for providing us with such vivid descriptions of this awesome trip. My husband and I look forward to each evening's email to get the lowdown on how the Spanish journey is progressing. Selina is enjoying the experience tremendously---not only has she told us so but we know this to be true as her messages home are few and far between (exactly what we were hoping for, that she be present and in the moment where she is). Thank you again for the pix and daily updates and wishing everyone safe and happy travels!!!" Franny Rye, NY
"Thank you to the amazing teachers on this trip. My daughter Katie has had the most incredible time learning, playing and traveling with your group. Thank you for taking such good care of the group and providing them with a trip of a lifetime! The pictures and updates have been enjoyed so much by her family members. Thank you!" Kelli S. South Burlington, VT
"Another amazing day! Laura had a bit of art history in her Spanish class this past year and was looking forward to seeing some of the paintings. Thank you again for giving all the kids such wonderful opportunities! Thank you again for all that you are doing to broaden their horizons! You work magic and get the kids to do things that we parents never would be able to get our own kids to do! Just want to tell you how much Laura’s family is enjoying your amazing, funny, and artistic pictures! Laura’s Grandma Root enjoys reading your informative, adventure-packed updates, and looking at the pictures every night before she goes to bed." Judy M. Wayne, PA

Frequently Asked Questions

See All FAQs

What kind of teen typically participates in this program? What are the requirements to join?

Teens from all over the world join this program! Typically, our participants are culturally curious  individuals who are excited to make new friends, experience something unique, and interested in stepping out of their comfort zones and expanding their horizons.

This program is exclusively for students who are currently in grades 9th through 12th and approximately 14 to 18 years old. Students living outside of the USA are welcome to join!

Where do we stay?

Our hotels are chosen specifically in safe areas and are well suited to facilitating group supervision. We stay in centrally located accommodations, usually within walking distance of the main attractions. We do not use large, impersonal chain hotels on the outskirts of cities; we prefer to select smaller, family-run hotels where we establish personal relationships with the owners.

Our hotel in Barcelona is steps away from the port and from la Rambla–in other words, central enough to be close to the action, but far enough away to get a good night’s sleep. In San Sebastián we will be staying close to the beach in the heart of the Old City. In Valencia we will stay at a traditional guest house right in the center. Our Madrid hotel is right in the heart of downtown.

For safety reasons, we do not publish the names of the accommodations we use. We do not feel it is safe to publish the name of a hotel where a group of teenagers is staying abroad. After registering, participants and parents are given access to our secure parent website where you will be able to see the names of all of the accommodations for the program.

Do most travelers go on their own?

Yes! In fact, over 75% of students who travel with us choose to come independently. This encourages teens to step further outside their comfort zone and make new friends. We believe that one of the most rewarding and exciting elements of travel is the new friendships that form along the way. When we travel by ourselves, we are bound to make new friends from all over the country and even the world. The best part is, you can travel again with your new friends on another TFT program the next summer!

If you are thinking about joining a TFT program by yourself but you are feeling unsure, please let us know! We have plenty of references from solo travelers who had great experiences and would be happy to chat with you about it.

Can I bring a friend?

Absolutely! We ask that if you do come with a friend, you and your friend(s) maintain openness to meeting new people and sharing this special experience with the entire group.

What do students like most about the Spain: Spanish Language Immersion (21 Days) trip?

On the Spain: Spanish Language Immersion (21 Days) trip, students love that they are able to practice their Spanish with locals in the best possible place to do so, while at the same time learning about Spanish culture and seeing some of the best sights the Spanish coast has to offer.

What is unique about the Spain: Spanish Language Immersion (21 Days) trip?

Between our Spanish lessons tailored specifically to each individual student, the out-of-the-classroom learning and cultural exploration experiences, and of course getting to see so many of Spain’s most vibrant metropolises, the Spain: Spanish Language Immersion (21 Days) program provides unique insider access to Spain and Spanish culture.

What is included?

Tuition cost includes ground transportation; accommodation; chaperones and guides; program-related activities and admissions; taxes and tips; all breakfasts and dinners.

Not included in cost (this is not intended to be an exhaustive list) : airfare; lunches; visas and visa application fees; personal and medical expenses; activities and admissions that are not program-related or referenced in the itinerary; beverages other than filtered water at meals; participant expenses that are outside of the program description, such as excess baggage fees and damage to hotels; expenses related to unforeseen circumstances, such as transportation strikes and natural disasters.

How do the optional group flights work?

Upon registration, you will be contacted by our International Logistics Team to discuss the program’s flight details. There is no requirement to take the group flight, but there are several advantages to doing so. The group flight is usually chaperoned by a TFT staff member, and it also offers an opportunity for the students to get to know one another prior to the start of the program. Parents are responsible for coordinating transport to the departure airport – however, the logistics team will send out instructions detailing the exact meeting spot and airport point person. For additional information about flights, visit our dedicated flight page.

Who leads the program?

Our staff is a cut above the rest! We seek out two main characteristics in our counselors – extensive knowledge of and experience in our destinations, and a passion for working with teens. Our staff’s backgrounds include living abroad and working in summer camps or other educational settings. Team members are proven leaders and role models, who connect easily with others and form genuine friendships with each student – all while bringing each destination to life.

We celebrate diversity! Our staff represents 49 different nationalities, speak a combined total of 21 languages, and visited 142 countries. Additionally, 80% of our staff lived or worked abroad in their lives. With so many unique experiences to share, you are sure to gain a global perspective.

Our average minimum ratios are one staff member to every seven participants. Each program has one Trip Director with several support staff, depending on the group size. Directors must be at least 25 years old within the calendar year and have prior experience working with TFT.

What are the safety qualifications for our staff?

Our staff members undergo a rigorous hiring process. They receive the same background check as school educators, an extensive training process to go over all safety precautions and protocols, and are required to be certified in CPR and First Aid.  We exclusively hire responsible, multi-talented individuals who are safety-minded and are as passionate about teen travel as we are.

What is the average group size?

We pride ourselves on small group sizes to create a more authentic and personalized experience. Our group sizes fall between 13 and 24 students – the perfect size to facilitate new friendships without feeling lost in a crowd! We believe smaller groups eliminate the likelihood of cliques, and allows for a well-rounded, healthy group dynamic.

How does this program connect to other programs?

Our program dates are designed specifically so that participants can opt to combine trips throughout the summer.  When connecting to another program, your counselor will escort you to the airport on the last day of the program and assist you in meeting your next group at your new destination.

What is the food like on this program?

In a word – delicious! At TFT, we believe food should be an integral part of the travel experience and always make an effort to eat at authentic establishments when we can. What better way to immerse yourself in the culture of a place than by sampling the local delicacies, and we encourage students to do so whenever possible! Just as we stay away from Americanized hotel chains, we try to avoid restaurants with menus that cater only to tourists because every good traveler knows the best food is found wherever the locals are eating!

The food in Spain can be a variety of styles, but one of the most amazing food traditions to ever exist remains the same throughout the whole country – tapas! Can’t decide on what to order? No problem! With tapas, you can try a little bit of everything. Tapas are small, shared dishes that accumulate to a full meals served in multiple appetizer sized plates. We will also have an opportunity to cook and eat tapas in Barcelona.

Of course, we are always willing and able to accommodate vegetarians, vegans, gluten allergies, and other dietary restrictions.

Do we ever get time to go off on our own?

Our staff and teens are nearly always together, but we do provide the opportunity to break up into smaller groups to allow for flexibility and customization within the itinerary.

We offer free time in defined safe areas – for example, shopping in a market or exploring a museum. During these times, students remain in groups of at least two and are given no more than an hour. Of course, the counselors remain nearby and available. Additionally, a lifeguard-certified counselor supervises the campers any time they are involved in water activities.

Do I need any vaccinations for this program?

We recommend checking with your family doctor regarding vaccinations and medical advice for the destination you are visiting. For more information, please check the World Health Organization’s website . Upon registration, we provide a list of recommended vaccinations that can be discussed further with your doctor. For Specific questions pertaining to the COVID-19 vaccine, click here .

What kind of visa do you need for this trip?

Any US citizen that enters Europe is automatically granted a free 90-day tourist visa.

When joining a TFT trip from outside of the US, please be sure to check your country’s specific visa requirements.

Do I need to speak the language?

No! Our Spanish classes at the academy are for all levels, from beginner to advanced, so there’s something for everyone. Before the start of the program, you will be complete a placement exam to see which class is most appropriate for your level.
