How Much Does a Travel Photography Make? A Typical Salary

Table of Contents

I want to start by saying that there isn’t one definitive answer when it comes to how big or small a travel photographer’s salary is.

How much a travel photographer can earn can range from just getting by each month, to running an extremely successful business as a high-end fashion photographer (who are typically among the highest paid photographers).

Travel Photographer's Salary

Travel photographers play an important role in ensuring other cultures and histories are properly represented, but just saying you’re a travel photographer is quite a broad statement.

It’s like saying you’re a consultant, without specifying what you consult on.

A travel photographer can be someone who sells stock photography on sites like Shutterstock, or it can also be someone who works for National Geographic.

The two are obviously very different jobs that provide very different levels of income.

If you’re looking to find out how much money you can potentially earn from travel photography jobs, then stick around because I’m going to try and put a number on every job on the travel photography spectrum, from the individual working for him/herself to the big players at the top of the ladder.

How does a travel photographer earn money?

No two travel photographers are exactly the same when it comes to how they generate an income. What might work for one person, might not for another.

Some of the ways to make money as a travel photographer include:

  • Selling stock photography
  • Selling photos directly to clients (magazines, tourism boards etc…)
  • Assignments
  • Brand deals if you have a big enough social media following
  • Blogging/vlogging (advertising/affiliate revenue)
  • Selling prints
  • Online courses
  • In-person workshops

How travel photographers earn money infographic

We have a great resource that goes into detail about how to find work by selling your travel photos directly to clients  and also one that outlines specific  ways you can break into the travel photography industry .

So check them out after you’ve finished reading this article, they are really helpful to people looking to break into the industry.

What is an average travel photographer’s salary?

A calculator, dollar bills and notepad on a white table

There are so many different ways for a travel photographer to earn money. It’s why putting an exact number on a travel photographer’s salary is impossible.

For argument’s sake, I’m only going to talk about the average professional travel photographer’s salary. In other words, I’m not going to count making $50 one month from selling stock photos as a salary, for example.

To make following along easier, I’ve come up with an estimate of an average salary for four hypothetical travel photographers.

Lucy , Julian , Joanna and Sai .

I will outline how each of them earns money and how much they make per month on average. That way you will get a better idea of which path to follow (or aim towards) yourself.

Remember, the numbers below are an average.  Some people will earn more and some less. These are just hypothetical examples to give you an idea of how much travel photographers can earn.

Lucy ~ An independent travel photographer working for herself earns $2200 per month

A girl crouching down in the grass taking a photo

As somebody who has no boss and no company employing her, Lucy’s monthly salary can fluctuate quite a lot.

It all depends on how she earns her money as an independent travel photographer and how many hours she has spent working towards her goals that month.

Lucy doesn’t have much fancy specialized digital photography equipment, just a solid camera and a few good-quality lenses. She has a large portfolio of high-quality photos (2000 images) uploaded to both Shutterstock and iStock which provides her with passive income. She adds new photos to her microstock portfolio monthly.

In addition to her earnings from microstock, she sells around 10 photos per month directly to editorial clients such as magazines and tourism boards.

This is how to sell images for editorial use directly to clients.

Finally, she has built a good working relationship with a travel brand who pays her a retainer every month in order to get the first pick (and the exclusive image rights) to a selection of her most recent photos, before they are offered for sale elsewhere.

Breakdown of Lucy’s earnings per month:

  • $750 retainer
  • $550 from microstock
  • $900 from licensing her photos to editorial publications

Total monthly salary: $2200

Lucy’s workflow

At the end of the month, she edits all of her photos taken that month.

She sends previews to the client who pays her a monthly retainer who can pick a number of images for themselves before anyone else sees them.

Then she chooses the best images from what is left over to offer for sale to magazines and tourism boards under an editorial license. She spends a day or two writing pitches and sending out emails.

All of the images that are left over and didn’t go to her retainer client and didn’t sell as editorial, get uploaded to microstock sites.

Julian ~ A photographer with a big social media following earns $5250 per month

A man holding a camera up to his face

You’re probably following somebody like Julian on social media already.

He has over 100,000 Instagram followers , a similar amount on Twitter and 125,000 subscribers on his YouTube channel.

It’s no surprise that having such a large and engaged following on social media can earn you a very good salary.

Julian has the chance to sell products to people who trust and value his opinion, as well as having advertisers constantly landing in his inbox who are keen to work with him.

Breakdown of Julian’s earnings per month

  • $1250 in YouTube ad revenue
  • $2000 from sponsored content where he promotes brands and their products.
  • $750 in affiliate revenue mainly from the Amazon Associates program.
  • $1000 from selling an online photography course he created.
  • $250 from Patreon where people send him a small amount of money each month to show their appreciation for his content.

Total monthly salary: $5250

You’re probably starting to see a pattern now.

A travel photographer’s salary is made up of many different revenue streams. That way their eggs aren’t all in one basket.

If one source of income dries up for whatever reason, it doesn’t totally cripple their business.

Julian’s workflow

Julian films, edits and uploads 3-4 videos of his life as a travel photographer per week to YouTube. They are a behind-the-scenes look into the life of a travel photographer.

He also posts his most recent photos to Instagram daily and engages with his followers on Twitter every day.

In the caption of every photo and video he posts, he will link to the gear he used to create that piece of content and explain why he uses it. Those links will be affiliate links which he earns commission from if someone clicks them and goes on to buy something.

From time to time he also promotes his own online course to his followers.

Finally, he networks and forms connections with brands relevant to travel and photography. He partners with them and strikes up sponsorship deals by leveraging his ability to put his content in front of lots of eyes.

Joanna ~ A travel photographer who gets sent on assignments by different clients earns $3000 to $4000 per month

A girl sitting on a sofa and looking at a camera

Companies have a constant need for fresh and exciting imagery. Especially photos that promote their brand or product.

That’s where Joanna comes in.

She is sent on assignments to photograph products in exciting and exotic locations.

For example, a company that sells backpacks has recently sent her to South America where she spent two weeks travelling around with their bags taking photos of people wearing them in places like the glaciers of Patagonia.

These photos are then used to market their products on social media, their website and through paid advertising.

Breakdown of Joanna’s earnings per month:

  • $1500 per week per assignment (length of assignments varies)
  • All expenses (travel, accommodation food etc…) is paid for by the client.

Total monthly salary: $3000 – $4500

Joanna takes on 2 – 3 assignments of different length every month from different clients so her income fluctuates.

But one of the biggest advantages Joanna has is that almost all of her living expenses throughout the month are covered on top of her salary.

Joanna’s workflow

She has developed a strong professional relationship with a number of clients who repeatedly hire her a few time per year. She spends time interacting with them and further developing the relationship.

Joanna also spends time updating her portfolio on her website with her latest projects and testimonials from clients. Then she spends time pitching her services directly to potential new clients.

Finally, she is part of an agency who put her in touch with new clients. She talks to new clients who are interested in her services over Skype to understand what they are looking for. They then draw up agreements which will form the basis for new assignments in the future.

Sai ~ A National Geographic photographer earns $10,000 per month

An Indian man holding a camera with a telephoto lens

A lot of people would argue that, within the travel photography industry, things don’t get much better than working for National Geographic; it’s one of the most coveted adventure photography jobs out there. A magazine photographer salary is usually pretty good, but National Geographic is about as prestigious as it gets.

It’s the top rung of the ladder.

So it might surprise you that a Nat Geo photographer’s salary isn’t astronomically high. But the kudos that comes with it is.

But don’t get me wrong, it’s still a good salary. It’s just not quite what most people expect it would be. It’s certainly not one of the highest paying photography jobs out there.

Sai, like all Nat Geo photographers, actually works for the organisation on a freelance basis. He goes on about 1 assignment per month for Nat Geo lasting about 2 weeks.

Breakdown of Sai’s earnings per month:

  • $7000 for a 14 day Nat Geo assignment.
  • All expenses paid when on a Nat Geo assignment.
  • $3000 from other photography work such as studio shoots and other commercial projects when not working for Nat Geo.

Total monthly salary: $10,000

As you can see, just from Nat Geo, Sai earns $7000 per month. That’s $84,000 per year. It’s a very good salary, but a lot of people would have guessed it would be higher. Especially after you take things like having to pay for travel photography insurance and expensive camera gear into account.

But, since Sai works for National Geographic on a freelance basis for only 2 weeks every month, it leaves him the other half of the month to work on other things.

He is a well-respected and reputable photographer in the industry so finding additional work is easy and he can charge accordingly.

Sai’s workflow

Two weeks out of the month he is on assignment for Nat Geo. It could be anywhere in the world.

The other two weeks he is working from his studio on other projects that his assistant has organised.

Because of his reputation, Sai is in the enviable position of being able to choose what he works on and often has to turn down work.

What is it like to be a travel photographer?

It’s hard.

It’s stressful.

But it’s one of the most amazing jobs in the world.

When I first started out on my journey to become a full-time travel photographer, I knew it wasn’t going to be easy.

But I didn’t quite realise what that meant.

Any self-employed person will tell you that not having a fixed and guaranteed income every month can be stressful. At least in the beginning.

Quote about how stressful being self-employed is

One month you might earn more than expected, another you might earn nothing. Quite literally $0.

You need to be prepared both financially and mentally for that stress.

As your business grows, those stresses start to become few and far between, thankfully.

You begin to understand how to manage the bad months because they will inevitably come. You begin to feel as though you can sustain your lifestyle doing something you love.

Because travel photography is about more than just making money.

It’s about the freedom of being able to work remotely. The freedom that comes with being your own boss and the opportunity you get to see the world.

Me taking a photo of the coast in the Algarve, Portugal

Being a travel photographer is hard work. You have to work at it like you’ve never worked at anything else before.

You will face a lot of rejection. Most people are going to say thanks, but no thanks, to buying your images.

Building a large and engaged social media following is hard.

But none of it is impossible.

If you want to be able to earn a full-time salary from travel photography, then there is no reason why you can’t.

You just need to know what your strengths are, look for untapped opportunities, be persistent and above all else, work hard .

A blue neon sign spelling out the words "Work Harder"

I was naive.

When I first decided I wanted to travel the world and pay for it as I go using my camera and laptop, I thought it would take a year of building up my reputation and making connections then it would become a reality.

Needless to say, after a year I think I’d earned $100 max. Hardly going to win any “photographer annual salary” awards.

And I had worked hard, very hard .

But I was persistent.

I didn’t give up and after a couple more years of focusing on building my brand alongside my normal day-to-day life and job, I brought a one-way ticket to Asia and started my new life. I might not be the highest paid photographer, but I make enough to be comfortable doing what I love and travelling the world.

Working on Koh Lanta in Thailand

Asia is cheap and I wasn’t making a lot of money. But I was sustaining an exciting new life in one of the most beautiful parts of the world.

In my eyes, I’d made it.

I hope this has opened your eyes to how much you have the potential to earn as a travel photographer.

But that you also understand it’s not easy to get there.

I would never lie and say that it’s easy.

I’m not one of those people that promise fame and riches after signing up to Shutterstock for the first time.

But if you’re motivated enough, then with a little guidance, you can achieve the dream.

I hope I’ve answered the question of how much money do photographers make. If I have, be sure to sign up to the newsletter using the form below. You’ll receive occasional round-ups of articles aimed at helping you on the path to becoming a successful travel photographer .

Thanks for reading.

Charlie Gardiner

I’m a professional travel photographer, and I’ve been living the digital nomad lifestyle since 2016. I make money by working on client assignments, selling stock photography and helping other photographers by sharing my experiences on this website. I move around at my own pace (I hate fast-paced travel) and like to spend a few months getting to know each place I base myself in.

My writing and photos have been featured on industry leading websites such as Digital Photography School , Atlas Obscura and the world’s leading underwater photography resource The Underwater Photography Guide . I authored an eBook called “ Breaking Into Travel Photography: The complete guide to carving out a career in travel photography ” that has been published on Amazon. My stock images have also appeared in ads promoting destinations and companies that sometimes has been a surprise, even to me. But I guess that’s the nature of stock photography, you never know who will license them!

Travel Photography Jobs + Tips for Becoming a Travel Photographer

Travel photography offers a broad range of potential career paths that can see you and your camera heading off for endless adventures around the world. From working as a photojournalist to capturing photos at a resort, there are plenty of ways to combine your love of travelling with photography if you’ve got both determination and talent.

I’ve been utterly obsessed with travelling since I was in school and first attempted to become a pilot so I can fly myself (and a plane load of passengers) to exotic destinations. That plan fell through when I got violently air sick during every flying lesson so my back-up was to become a travel journalist. You can read about that journey here , but long story short, that path led to discovering the art of photography and over the past 15 years I’ve worked a number of jobs under the ‘travel photography’ umbrella and it’s been one crazy, incredible adventure.

For those with a creative mind and the motivation to turn their dream into a reality and working business, it may sound cliché but the sky really is the limit. Sure it takes a tonne of begging, pitching, rejections, both time and money, BUT, now more than ever there’s such a need for photographic content that there are plenty of positions and career paths available!

But let’s take a peek at the available jobs!

Firstly, a few tips for getting a travel photography job –

  • Create an online portfolio/website of your work
  • Learn photography and develop a style that’s uniquely yours ( read more here on how to stand out as a photographer )
  • Don’t undersell yourself or your photography and be confident in your ability
  • Find a niche or specialty
  • Learn to market your work and have a pitch ready for interviews/phone calls
  • Invest in quality camera equipment ( see what Olympus gear I use here )
  • Be flexible, travel photography requires a commitment to time away from home and long days working, unfortunately it’s only about 15% glamourous.

Now let’s take a peek at six travel photography jobs that may just be suited for you…

Travel Photography Jobs

#1 freelance travel photographer.

Working as a freelance photographer sounds quite carefree and adventurous but it does require a lot of organisation, patience and determination. As a freelance travel photographer you’re essentially running your own business so are responsible for not only finding work and clients, but marketing, managing, researching, producing the content to a high standard and then keeping a track of your invoicing and payments.

Freelance photography is a maze of opportunities when it comes to how you can make it work as so many brands, businesses and publications need content. As a freelancer you can potentially work for multiple clients at any one time or if you’re lucky, you may score a regular gig that will ensure a stable monthly income…a big plus when working solo!

While there are endless areas within freelancing that you can find work in, if you’re looking to focus on travel photography then you’ll want to have a good portfolio of work from your previous travels to use as you pitch for work. And of course, a passion for travelling and talent that helps you stand out when approaching clients and editors!

Having an online portfolio is essential when working as a freelance photographer, I used to actually carry around a printed album of my work and introduce myself in person (yikes, scary!) but thank goodness a well-written email introduction with a link to your work does the trick now.

Travel photography jobs to travel the world as a travel photographer

Travel photography is quite a competitive market to work in however there is a constant need for content with social media, magazines, online travel guides, blogs, marketing materials, newspapers and so on all requiring regular updates and a fresh take on destinations.

If you’re looking to approach magazines to have your work published, it can be worthwhile to read the publication for a few months to get a feel for their style, what they publish and what regions they focus on throughout the year…more often than not they’ll be quite seasonal so you’ll need to time your pitch. You probably won’t find a photo or article about skiing on the shelves just before summer as an example.

A few tips for working as a freelance photographer:

  • Build a portfolio of both published + personal work (I recommend the Premium plan on Wix.com , loved using it for my site!)
  • Learn the art of pitching
  • Ensure you have enough funds to support yourself if it’s a little slow getting clients
  • Don’t take rejection as failure, you will get a lot of no’s whether you’re just starting out or established so get used to negative responses and learn to shine once you get a yes!
  • Streamline your finances so you have a steady system in place for expenses/income

Exciting news – The Freelance Travel Photographer Course is a brand new online offering by The Wandering Lens.

#2 Destination Wedding Photographer

It may come as a surprise to some readers, but I actually owned a wedding photography (and landscape) business for six years on a tropical island in Australia. After the first two years on one very small (but beautiful!) island, I branched out and took enquiries for destination weddings, combining wedding photography with my addiction to travelling.

As a destination wedding photographer you’re typically booked by a couple to photograph their wedding day somewhere away from home. It could mean they’re travelling from their home to somewhere close to your base, or they may ask you to travel with them abroad to photograph their nuptials, aka the dream job.

I’ve photographed over 450 weddings and of those, many were destination weddings in places like Italy, France, New Zealand, the Cook Islands and on numerous islands of the Great Barrier Reef. The best part about working as a destination wedding photographer is that if you’re equally as passionate about travel and landscape photography as you are about weddings and portraits, then you get to combine the two and create magic for your clients!

I had a motto with my business that it was ‘blending love and landscapes’, a concept that attracted clients because my work wasn’t traditional and posed, it was relaxed and romantic mainly featuring the couple amongst a scene, enjoying their wedding day and exploring the destination. You can have a peek at my wedding portfolio here .

Underwater wedding photography by Lisa Michele Burns

As a business, working as a wedding photographer abroad you need to ensure you have insurance, a good contract, price your packages to cover travel costs and just like working as a freelancer, you need to have the skills to market and manage plus a portfolio that allows couples to trust that you’ll cover their perfect day professionally.

I can’t stress enough how important it is to be professional when photographing a wedding. It may look pretty and calm on the outside but there’s a lot of pressure involved because the moments don’t happen twice so you’ll want to ensure you’re completely comfortable using your camera in any environment, are a pro at posing or relaxing your clients so they’re appearing natural and their most beautiful in front of the camera and that you’ve got all the equipment to photograph not just on the day, but to save back up and edit the images.

Tips for becoming a destination wedding photographer:

  • Build a career as a wedding photographer in your local area
  • Create an online portfolio of your wedding and travel images (I used Wix.com to create my portfolio site in a few hours)
  • Network at wedding industry events with potential clients
  • Approach destination wedding specialists (they may need to add to their list of recommended photographers)
  • Be confident in your abilities as a photographer and ensure you know how to capture a wedding day from start to finish in all conditions!
  • Advertise in bridal magazines, social media and ask your friends and family to spread the word if they know anyone heading abroad to get married.

Travel photography jobs as a destination wedding photographer

#3 Resort Photographer

Many resorts whether they’re located on an island, a ski resort or are attached to a theme park will have resort photographer positions available. Typically they’ll be seasonal and are a great way to work your way around the world with the safety net of a fixed income and usually some discounted staff accommodation where most people holiday!

More often than not the positions will be quite casual, requiring a few hours work per day photographing people doing activities or you may be booked for family portraits, events or work in the photography store. This job probably won’t get you rich quick but it’s a fantastic way to improve your photography skills while working in a beautiful destination.

One of the first resort photography jobs I did was at Tangalooma Island Resort and every day was a mix between photographing people at the sand dunes, on quad bike tours (yes I got to ride one!) and then in the evening I’d shoot sunset portraits and photos in the water with wild dolphins. It’s a job that inspired a lot of what I do today and I’ll be forever grateful for the skills and people I met during the year I worked there.

Luxury Island resorts and hotels by The Wandering Lens

Settings: ISO 200 (this was taken from a moving ski lift), f/3.5, 1/1600sec.

To find a resort photography job take a peek at online employment sites for the area you’re hoping to work. You may need to also look into working visas if you’re looking to work abroad but a number of countries have working holiday arrangements if you’re under 32 and casual work like a resort photographer is an ideal position for this type of visa!

The skill level required for a resort photography job is usually not too high as more often than not you’ll be working in a set environment so the camera settings and position won’t change too much. It’s a great job if you’re just starting out and will help build a lot of confidence as a photographer which you can then take on to bigger and more professional opportunities.

Tips for getting work as a resort photographer:

  • Be flexible with starting dates, working hours and living conditions
  • Show you’re a people person and can think on your feet
  • Demonstrate an interest or skill in photography
  • Research the resort/area you’re applying for
  • Learn the basics of capturing action shots and portrait images

#4 Photojournalist

Possibly the most respected job in the travel photography realm, a photojournalist is quite similar to working as a freelance photographer however is associated more with commissioned work from publications or clients.

Photojournalism is traditionally relating to the coverage of an event, issue, subject or location that helps to shed light and tell a story for a newspaper, magazine, NGO or online publication. More often than not, people working as photojournalists are also journalists who can write a supporting story or provide in depth captions for their images. To work as a photojournalist who specializes in travel photography, you’ll want to have gained a lot of experience before applying for jobs or approaching editors as these are sought after gigs!

Work experience, internships or publishing your own photo features and stories on a website/blog can be a great way to get a foot in the door as a photojournalist. These steps will also help you to develop your style and skills as a photographer because you’ll be booked for your ability and proven results.

Gion Matsuri Festival, Kyoto Japan

It can be helpful to have studied or have a background in journalism and then check with your local newspaper for openings within the journalism or photography departments. Online publications can also be a great place to build a portfolio of published work so once you feel you’ve got a solid skillset and have a story to tell, pitch it, there’s nothing to lose!

Also don’t forget to enter photography competitions as some include a commission and chance to have your work published! National Geographic runs a monthly ‘Your Sho t’ competition, and a number of other publications such as Wanderlust and Lonely Planet also regularly run talent based contests which can help get your work seen by editors. World Nomads offers regular travel photography scholarships that offer talented photographers a chance to learn from industry experts and have their work published! *Always check entry terms when submitting your images as some contests are run purely to grab content and don’t have the photographer’s rights in mind.

Tips for finding work as a photojournalist:

  • Research the work of other photojournalists, see where they’re getting published.
  • Find a niche or issue you’re passionate about
  • Develop a consistent style that editors can come to rely on
  • Network with writers, photographers and editors at social travel and/or publishing events

#5 Cruise Ship Photographer

Now this is a travel photography job for the more patient and seaworthy photographer…for obvious reasons. While you’ll be visiting a number of exotic ports, there’s a lot of time spent on board the cruise ship so before you follow this path, be sure you’re ready for time at sea, cramped staff cabins and repetitive working conditions.

Typical tasks as a cruise ship photographer include capturing portraits of guests on board, at dinners, doing activities and if you’re lucky, some adventures off the boat but more often than not, it’s focused around what happens on the ship itself. The size of ship can differ, there’s luxury yachts right through to the mega cruise liners and you’ll find it much easier to secure a job on board one of the big boys.

Travel photography jobs on a cruise ship

There are some very cool opportunities that exist on board expedition vessels, not just your typical cruise ship. It’s worth researching available opportunities with Arctic or Antarctic expedition cruises as they’ll have on board photographers to and these positions will be more focused on not only photographing guests but teaching them how to capture the stunning scenery you’ll pass.

It can be a great job to build your confidence and skills as a photographer and you’ll get very comfortable using flash as a lot of the time it’s a staged setting (on a traditional ship). Because you’re working with guests, there’s a lot of interaction with people so you’ll want to be comfortable socializing or looking to use this experience to bring you out of your shell a little. Take a peek at MSC’s career site to see job outlines relating to photography on a cruise ship.

A few things to check when applying for a cruise ship photography position:

  • What are the hours you’ll work?
  • What country is the cruise ship company based in, for visa/work permit purposes?
  • What are the living arrangements like? Is it a shared cabin?
  • Do you get sea sick? If so, visit your doctor to be prescribed some medication!
  • Do you get to actually visit the locations the ship docks in? In my opinion there’s no point being a cruise ship photographer if all you get to see is the ship! Unless you like ships…

#6 Travel Blogger

Ever wanted to take full control of your career and release your creative projects into the world without having to wait for someone to approve them? Travel blogging may be just the thing for you!

Now firstly, take away all those ideas that a travel blogger only writes about ‘what I did on my holiday in Paris’, more often than not, bloggers are savvy and business-minded people and the blog is not only a creative outlet, but a full-time job. Travel blogging is a career path open to anyone from any background with one common interest, a love of travel and thanks to the good old internet, is a job that can be done absolutely anywhere…with a WIFI connection!

Technically you can turn your own travel blog into anything you want! You can publish hard hitting political pieces about destinations effected by war, environmental articles and images that highlight issues relating to climate change, or you can of course, focus on the travel experience, cultures and destinations both popular and more off the beaten path.

Now having a travel blog doesn’t mean you need to be an accomplished journalist or writer, you can be a photographer keen to have somewhere to publish your images. I started The Wandering Lens to write destination guides for photographers and while I have a background in journalism, I wanted the site to be very image heavy so people would be attracted to the visuals, not the words. I actually don’t love the word ‘blog’ and prefer to call it a guide or website because essentially, it’s a little library of content that sits online waiting for someone to type some golden search words into Google and discover my Destination Guides or Photo Tip archives.

Learn more – chat with me (Lisa) about your goals and I’ll personally suggest a path forward to learn faster and get started as a travel blogger and photographer! Email [email protected] and let’s chat about your career!

Travel photography jobs you can get as a travel photographer

A blog can be a fantastic way to share some behind the scenes of your photography missions whether they’re personal or professional to document the destination or project. At first it may feel like you’re pressing publish and only your mum is taking a peek (Hi Mum!) but building an audience to follow your work is one of the essential elements of having a blog and does take time and patience.

Since The Wandering Lens started back in 2015 I’ve grown from just 100 visitors per month to over 125,000 and it’s incredible to finally see years of work paying off. There were definitely times when it just didn’t feel worth it and it takes a lot of work and a tonne of motivation to stick with it. You’ll also need to dedicate quite a bit of time to creating content, to actually do the travel part of having a travel blog! This sounds like the fun part but because you’re working for yourself, need to ensure that you’re sticking to a budget and not going bananas on the credit card to become a famous blogger…that’s never going to end well. Once you’re more established you can approach partners, tourism boards, tour operators and accommodation outlets to work in supporting your ventures to reduce costs but to do this you need to be able to prove there’s a benefit to them, eg. your blog needs a lot of visitors or you can provide them with high quality imagery.

You may hear a lot of people say that you can start a blog in just a matter of minutes, which is very true. However, to create a successful travel blog you need to continuously work on it and treat it as a business. There’s always new technical updates to install, HTML code, plugins, SEO, checking your domain name and server subscriptions are up to date not to mention writing, photographing, editing, creating a layout then working to make sure your posts are seen across social media or visible on Google.

If you love sharing stories, telling people where to find amazing places or simply just want an outlet to publish your images then building a travel blog is such a rewarding career path. Eventually you can aim to monetize your website via display advertising or affiliate income but when starting out, it’s important to lay a foundation of solid and informative content or inspiring imagery that make people want to visit your site again and again.

Travel photography jobs you can get as a travel photographer

#7 An Influencer

Since the rise of social media, a career path has evolved that relates to creating content with the aim of ‘influencing’ others. I’m sure if you’ve got an Instagram account you’re well aware of who the influencers are, personally I still find it a little bizarre that people are out there pretending (in some cases, definitely not all), to live a certain way or use certain brands because they’re being paid to do so. I know that probably 70% (random figure) are genuine but that other chunk can make this career appear a tad questionable and from a business point of view, very risky, especially if it’s your only source of income.

Influencing is essentially marketing with a fancy new name and the game of promoting and selling things to people has been around for centuries, it’s now just a bit more obvious.  Combining travel photography with being an influencer is a no brainer because visual aids  are essential when selling a product or experience and the need for fresh content is never ending. Working as an influencer can mean collaborating with clients to showcase their product, creating content for them to use in their own marketing requirements or using your influence to support something meaningful or a creative project.

Social media for photographers Instagram The Wandering Lens Travel Photography

There’s a lot of factors that come into working as an influencer and while it may look glamourous on the outside, there’s countless pitches, emails, negotiations, planning, research and creating that goes into taking that perfect photo. More often than not people will judge an influencer solely on their images but forget about how much time and effort went into the set up and production, something you’ll need to perfect in order to become a professional influencer.

I’m a little old school but of course have social media and due to my following on Instagram @the_wanderinglens , I’m often considered an influencer despite the fact I have no fashion sense or rarely show myself on camera. Starting to consider yourself an influencer usually comes down to numbers, the amount of likes and engagement you receive and also, your message…which is the part I’m much more comfortable with. Being an influencer has many, many positives because once you’ve built a large following (or small and super engaged) and audience, you can use it for good. A lot of what I share relates to revealing beautiful places to photograph, creative photo tips for people to use on their travels and very soon I’ll be sharing content from a project I’m photographing that highlights destinations impact by climatic conditions and environmental issues. There’s a number of influencers currently involved in sustainable tourism projects, clean ups, wildlife conservation and charitable initiatives which is something that’s on the increase and a wonderful outcome from the world of social media.

One thing I do want to mention about becoming an influencer is that due to the ever changing algorithms and lack of control you actually have over how your content is delivered, it can be quite a risky career move. Instead, combine social media with another element of your business such as travel blogging, travel writing and travel photography to give yourself a better chance of a stable income and more opportunities.

There are a lot of courses available online that promise to ‘help you become an influencer’ but really, you need to follow these few steps:

  • Create beautiful and original content
  • Engage with other users on social media
  • Have a message and/or tell a story within your posts
  • Curate and publish a consistent body of work ( read more about this here )
  • Lastly, get lucky. Sure it requires a lot of work but sometimes it’s all about luck too!
  • Be responsible, being an influencer means you’re influencing trends and behaviour so take that fact seriously

Hi Trisha, great to hear you’re keen to get involved within the photography and travel industries. There are so many career paths you can take that it really depends on what you want to focus on. One tip I would give, is to include some element of business and/or marketing studies in there because if you’re running your own business whether it’s focused on travel or photography, having these skills will give you a head start! Best of luck 🙂

Hi Lisa, apologies for the delay in replying to your comment! Combining work as a travel agent with photography/travel writing is so ideal. I actually came from a similar career path and studied tourism operations and management before moving into journalism. I’ve got a self-study program available online that works through the steps of improving your photography, creating a portfolio and exploring ways in which to freelance, start a blog or sell prints via your blog/website. Travel Photography Must-Haves

If you’re serious about building an online presence, you need a blog . Nothing will help Google find you like a blog will. Post your new work regularly and write about it. You don’t need to be an amazing writer but post something regularly alongside your photography. Starting my travel photography blog was one of the best things I’ve ever done. I wouldn’t have been given many of the opportunities I have without it. Ideally, your blog will be on your own domain either alongside or linked to your portfolio.

Social Media

I’m sure I don’t need to tell you about the marketing potential of social media . Getting seen in a sea of images isn’t easy, but if you’re not where the eyeballs are, you’ll be invisible. Be wary of spreading yourself too thinly. Focus on building your community on one or two networks rather than trying to be active on a whole bunch.

How To Make Money with Photography

As I mentioned previously, travel photography jobs are hard to come by, and the competition is fierce. So, how do you make money as a travel photographer? There are many potential sources of income, and virtually all professionals have multiple income streams. If you talk to 10 travel photographers you will get 10 different explanations as to how they make money. Although there are some income sources that you shouldn’t consider just yet, like teaching workshops, there are a few that are within reach of many photographers.

Print Sales

An old church against a cloudy blue sky - travel photography jobs

Stock Licensing

Licensing images with stock agencies is another common way to make money as a travel photographer, but don’t expect to get rich. To get a stock agency’s attention, you’ll need a portfolio of photos that are not only nice to look at, but they also need to be technically excellent. Anything that isn’t sharp or has too much noise will be rejected. Any images with people or buildings need a signed release . You can’t include any logos or brands. Even when your images are accepted, commissions can be as low as 25 cents per sale. That said, if you can build up a large archive of good travel photos, selling stock can provide a nice passive income. It will take time, though. You’re not going to be able to retire anytime soon. You will need to learn what sells well. Images that get a lot of likes on social media or sell well as prints don’t necessarily sell well as stock. Many stock agencies publish their top-selling images , so watching these will help guide you.

A stunning mountainous landscape shot through a large glass window with restaurant interior in the foreground - window how to make money with travel photography

As interest in photography continues to grow, there will be more demand for people to teach photographers how to use their cameras or learn new techniques. You don’t need to be Ansel Adams to be able to teach photography, but you do need a solid understanding of the principles of the craft and great communication skills. It could be through writing as I’ve already mentioned, it could be at your local camera club, or it could be through YouTube. There are many options to make money with photography. Nevertheless, I would strongly recommend avoiding trying to run workshops until there is a demand for your knowledge and skill.

Get Creative

The ways that you can make money with photography are only as limited as your imagination. As I said, almost all travel photographers have their hands in many pots, and continue to search for new ones. The industry is changing at lightning-speed, which comes with many challenges and opportunities. If you’re willing to work hard and diversify, making money with travel photography jobs is not only possible but totally worth the hard work. For easier travel photography planning , you should consider finding a fixer or local guide to help – check out our articles great tips for sourcing the right person for the job.

What is a travel photographer.

As the name suggests, a  travel photographer  is a sub-genre that involves traveling from place to place. Travel photography involves taking a series of images, such as landscapes, street life, culture, dining areas, shopping areas, etc.

With travel photography in mind, there are several ways the photos can be used. Photographers can use these images for advertisements, vacation planning, and some even sell their pictures as decor to hang on walls. Travel photography is a way to capture locations all around the world.

Why is Travel Photography Right for You?

Travel photography has its benefits.  It gives photographers the chance to experience different environments and things. It also helps you gain experience and skills as well. Travel photography grants the opportunity to make money taking photos and getting paid to travel the world.

You Can Travel Around the World

By being a  travel photographer , you have a chance to see the world and take brilliant photos for your job.

There are endless options to choose from and mostly no restrictions, land or water that you cannot shoot. Of course, if that particular place does not permit photoshoots, you must respect the rules.

Having a job that deals with travel photography comes with the perk of having the creative freedom in exploration. Traveling allows you to see new sites and things you would have never imagined. You experience new areas, interact with locals, eat fresh cuisine, and bask in local street life. In a way, it is almost like a paid vacation.

Gain Experience and Skills

Whether new or experienced, a travel photographer can learn and experience firsthand how this job field operates, so they are prepared for the future.

Gaining experience and obtaining skills allows photographers to grow as they learn to become patient and flexible. This kind of job also requires perseverance as it comes with challenges to overcome.

Any new experience for travel photographers will not be perfect, and you will make mistakes. Sometimes there will be obstacles that require the utmost attention. However, you can hone your skills by avoiding errors in doing so.

Utilizing your skills can also enhance your work, strengthening your level of expertise and the quality of your photos.

Strengthens Your Network

You are not the only travel photographer exploring, so it’s necessary to interact with other co-travelers.

One of the reasons this would be beneficial is that it’s an opportunity to make new friends who share the same passion that you have for photography.

Another reason would be that this will strengthen your network in the photography business.

An Opportunity to Document Your Travels

One of the most significant benefits of being a travel photographer is to have photographic evidence of all your adventures and travels. Some memories of your trips will fade over time, so this way, you are preserving your work.

These images will last for a while. Therefore, it is essential to capture breath-taking scenes that you can view in the comforts of your home. And after all is said and done, you can find creative ways to store your images, such as scrapbooking, photo framing, slideshows, videos, and other options.

Making Money Taking Travel Images

Having taken a lot of travel images, not only can you keep your photos for memories, but people would love to purchase them.

Different variations of  how you can sell your travel images would be a photo book or Ebook, selling photos online or to travel magazines, selling your photos on stock sites, etc.

10 Tips in Making Money as a Travel Photographer

There are so many factors to consider to make money. There is more to being a travel photographer than scheduling a trip and gathering your equipment. You have to establish your business and professional relationships. Here are the top 10 tips for making money as a travel photographer.

Selling Photos on Stock Sites

Selling photos on stock sites allows you to broaden your portfolio and make money with photography . You can submit your photos to various stock sites and tag them using relevant keywords describing them. Selling to stock sites is suitable for making a little extra income, but it’s not as dependable for full-time work.

Enter Travel Photography Competitions

Believe it or not, there are travel photography competitions where you can participate by submitting your images. This is perfect if you want to advertise or show your skills and have an opportunity to compete with other travel photographers. Some of the prizes for entry winners could be cash, new camera equipment, or a chance to display your work in an exhibit.

Establish an Online Portfolio

Whether online or a physical copy, a portfolio is imperative in displaying your travel photography work professionally. It gives you a chance to show off your top-tier work. It’s best to organize your portfolio based on the destination, year, colors, etc.

Create a Website

Another factor to consider, aside from an online portfolio, would be to  establish a website or blog  for your work. You can display your work and have contact information for potential clients to seek you out for commissions. You can also write posts that include some of your images.

Establish Your Online Community

Once you have created your website and portfolio, you can now create your online community. Doing this will allow you to advertise your business and market to your target audience. This can be self-promoting your work on social media and gaining a considerable following.

Teach Photography Classes

You can make money by teaching photography courses if you’re a skilled travel photographer. You can either teach the basics or have a class on travel photography. If you are unsure where to start, there are  guides to conducting your photography course.

Take Commissions for Travel Photography

Another way of making money is taking commissions for your work. This can mean offering services to clients for wedding photos, landscapes, vacation spots, etc.

The client will have specifications for what they want, so you do not have to create ideas for them. Unfortunately, this is only possible if you are noticed via editors, your website or your portfolio.

Advertise Your Work

Self-promotion is vital when seeking out work as a travel photographer. In this case, this can be from promoting your work on social media sites, creating advertisements, and even using your networking with other photographers to receive more assignments. You can also utilize word of mouth among friends, family, and close mutuals apart from advertising online.

Sponsored Marketing

Once you have established a substantial following online, influencers primarily are offered to advertise name-brand products or services on their social media accounts. This is what’s known as sponsored or affiliated marketing. Once you advertise this product or service, you will get a percentage of the sale if your ad attracts sales. Product photography  is also a good way to make money

Publish a Travel Photobook

Publishing a photo book or Ebook can further help boost your travel photography business. You can print a photobook displaying all of your images or an ebook of not only your pictures but write about your thoughts and feelings about your work.

Travel Photography Tips for Your Photos

Now that you are inspired or at least have an idea of how you want to go about travel photography, you are probably eager to take pictures of breath-taking moments.

But, taking travel photos requires experience and utilizing your skills. Here are some tips to help you out when taking travel photos.

Preplan Your Visit

As a travel photographer, you’ll feel inclined to travel everywhere to take photos for your business at the spur of the moment. It’s crucial that you read about where you are going before heading out. It’s important to read travel books, blogs, or vacation guides to be aware of your surroundings and the environment itself.

Preparing Your Equipment

Sometimes it’s easy to forget things. However, if you are a travel photographer, you must have everything you need when you go out for a photoshoot. Aside from your travel necessities, your camera equipment is essential to have. Your equipment can be your tripod, lighting,  camera travel lenses , or anything that helps take photos.

Packing Lightly and Efficiently

A travel photographer  must pack the essential items  so you can travel efficiently and lightly. Aside from your equipment, ensure you have your phone, toiletries, money, and any emergency items just in case. You are in an unfamiliar environment, so it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Ask Permission to Take Your Photos

It is crucial to be courteous about the environment and locals around you. So be polite when you are traveling to your destination. Not every location is going to permit taking photos. In that case, if there are locals, always ask if it’s okay to shoot there. Always be polite because you are in their territory.

Prioritizing Your Work

It’s nice to take in the scenery where you take your photos. However, if this is for your job, it is best to prioritize your work. Take your time with photoshoots instead of rushing because, chances are, the rushed quality will show in the final draft. If you have trouble organizing your photography time, preplan a schedule beforehand.

Back up Your Travel Photography Photos

Accidents happen, but you might want to avoid losing your photos or camera.  You can back up your photos  using a hard drive or an online storage site. Though, it’s imperative to have a physical drive.

How to become a travel photographer - and get paid to travel the world.

Do you have what it takes to become a travel photographer? Our team of experts share their tips and advice...

Do you have what it takes?

There's much more to becoming a travel photographer than exploring exotic destinations and clicking your shutter. Getting up at stupid-o-clock to catch the perfect sunrise, carrying a camera that’s heavier than four backpacks, skipping meals in the quest for perfect light, and missing out on the travel experience because you’re too busy taking photos, are just a few of the downsides.

Loving travel and having an eye for a great shot are not enough. You need patience, both in waiting for (or creating) that perfect shot, and in terms of your career: you’re unlikely to make it overnight.

You need stamina to cope with hectic schedules and long days; you need a business brain to market your work successfully; you need to be creative and come up with new angles to stand out from the crowd; and you need to have the right equipment.

What work is there?

The design and advertising industries pay the highest – you could earn thousands if your images are used in a high-profile campaign. However, this work is hard to come by and only available to those who’ve already proved themselves.

Books, magazines, newspapers, calendars, cards and websites all need travel images. Having an area of expertise will help you to sell shots.

The easiest route is to build up a portfolio of travel photography and approach an image library – an organisation that holds thousands of images by hundreds of photographers, which publications can search through.

Some libraries already have enough travel shots, but the big online stock libraries are always looking for fresh images, and want to offer as much as variety as possible. So, if you want to submit to a particular library, check you have a good range of high-quality images that are different from the library’s current selection (and as good as, or better!). Libraries will also take a cut of the money you make from selling your images, typically 50%.

Advice from the experts...

1. paul harris, professional travel photographer.

"Check out the The British Association of Picture Libraries and Agencies [BPLA] for relevant library requirements," says professional photographer Paul Harris. "And ensure you have used as many relevant keywords as possible to tag your photos," says Paul.

Away from libraries, Paul suggests thinking laterally about organisations to approach. "Travel companies use photographers for their websites and brochures. But they don't even have to be travel-related companies. NGOs like Oxfam often use photographers to document their work. Some pay basic expenses and/or day rates."

2. Lyn Hughes, editor-in-chief, Wanderlust

"Back when we started Wanderlust , we would invite photographers in with their portfolios. Nowadays, although we do commission some work, we increasingly use online stock libraries to find images for this website and for our magazines. On the one hand, the libraries have a wide range and make it very easy to search. On the other hand, we can find ourselves wading through pages of very average shots that don't offer anything different or fresh. And, so often we struggle to find what we need due to poor tagging by the photographers."

Another approach is to enter travel photography competitions. Wanderlust ’s annual  Travel Photo of the Year competition is the UK's largest travel photography competition, and has categories specifically for amateurs as well as one that is open to professionals.

The winners of the competition get a photo commission to an exotic destination – great experience and priceless exposure, as the images are printed in Wanderlust . Many of the past winners of this competition have gone on to become professional or semi-professional photographers. "We are often been approached for the contact details of certain photographers," says Lyn. "Organisations, such as travel companies or tourist boards, sometimes want to buy an image for their own use, or to see what else the photographer has in a similar vein. It can be a fantastic showcase."

Lyn's last tip is to have your own website. "Show off your work on Instagram and Facebook, but do ensure you have a good, easy to use website too. It should have some of your best work (with lots of keywords!), any specialities, and awards/competitions you have won, and your contact details. It's too easy to get carried away, add thousands of images, and forget the basics. Keep it simple."

What makes good travel photography?

A pretty picture is not enough. It needs to be high quality and it needs to be original. For magazines, you need to consider issues such as leaving space on the image for word placement, positioning your subject off-centre so it doesn’t fall down the page join, and possibly placing the subject on the right-hand side of a landscape shot for maximum impact.

Pictures for editorial features are more than decoration – they need to help tell the story. An image can be stunning but if it has no relevance to the text it will be discarded. The image has to fit the brief. For example, the image on a Wanderlust cover must make the reader think: “I want to be there”.

How to get that job

Be committed. Like any job for which competition is tough, you have to stick at it.  “The only way to make a living from travel photography is if you make it a full-time job,” says Richard I’Anson, travel photographer and founder of Lonely Planet Images.

  • Don’t undersell yourself. You might be doing your dream job, but you can’t do it for love alone – that won’t pay the bills and it will undermine your status as a professional. If clients are buying your work they should pay the going rate. I’Anson advises: “Don’t give pictures away in return for an airfare or hotel accommodation. It’s much harder to charge once you’ve set a precedent like that.”
  • Be objective. Try to see your work through the eyes of potential clients. I’Anson says: “You have to separate the travel experience from the pictures. How you got the picture is not of any interest to photo editors or clients – they just want good pictures.”
  • Be original. There must be hundreds of near-perfect shots of the Taj Mahal – what will make yours stand out?
  • Find a speciality. Carving yourself a niche – as a bird expert or underwater specialist, for example –  might make it easier to make a name for yourself. Ideally find one that interests you.
  • Hone your skills. Get your photography to a high standard, both technically and creatively, before you head off on an expensive trip.
  • Get the gear. With camera equipment you get what you pay for – and it’s expensive. The minimum you’ll need is a digital SLR with a high-quality lens.

A word from a pro... Steve Benbow

Steve Benbow’s work has appeared in many newspapers, but how did he get it there?

“I left photographic college in 1989 – a good technical grounding is essential, be it on a photography course or as a photographic assistant. However, finding a travel photographer willing to take you under their wing is almost impossible. Most work alone and fast, with little time to explain things.

After college I got a job with Raleigh International as a full-time expedition photographer. This came about thanks to a retired colonel who liked my diverse portfolio – and because I had a lot of front. I was very lucky and have no front anymore…

My seven expeditions with Raleigh enabled me to produce an extensive range of travel images, some of which are still in my portfolio today.

I’ve since been involved in various ad campaigns, and I’ve had many photojournalism commissions – everything from work for World Vision in Uganda to a feature on naked rambling in Palm Springs.

Top tip: “The market is almost saturated so you need to provide something special. Look around for unusual angles or something quirky.”
