Lordi (formed in 1992) is a Finnish operatic heavy metal and pyrotechnically inclined hard rock band, hailing from Helsinki, Finland.

Initially formed by vocalist and costume designer Tomi Petteri Putaansuu or Mr. Lordi as a solo project in 1992, Lordi released his demo album “Napalm Market” in 2002, led by the single “Inferno”. After organising a Kiss cruise for Finnish Kiss fans heading to Sweden, Mr. Lordi met guitarist Amen and bassist G-Stealer who recorded the band’s debut “Bend Over And Pray The Lord”, however due to the label's lack of resources the album never got its release.

Lordi has long been indebted to the band Kiss, not least for the theatrical stage performances and elaborate make-up and masks (which they never take off) but it is in the shared appreciation for Kiss how most of the members met. In 1999 G-Stealer left the band and was replaced by Magnum who Mr. Lordi met at Kiss Army Finland, and who, alongside drummer Kita, recorded the band’s proper debut album “Get Heavy” in 2002. The album shot to No. 3 in the Finnish chart, has been certified triple-platinum and spawned the No. 1 single “Would You Love A Monsterman?”. The subsequent European tour propelled the band to popularity, especially in Germany, and aided the band signing with German record label Drakkar.

Magnum was fired just after the album release, however his replacement Pekka Tarvenen (Kalma) only stayed with the band for the release of Lordi’s sophomore album “The Monsterican Dream” in 2004. With Kalma replaced by Samer el Nahhal (Ox) and Siikavirta replaced by Leena Peisa (Awa) the band released their third studio album “The Arockalypse" in May 2006. The album spawned the No. 1 single “Hard Rock Hallelujah” and was appointed Finland’s official single entry in the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest, which some religious leaders denounced as supporting the devil.

Their song eventually won the Eurovision Song Contest, scoring the most points in the contest’s history, catapulting the band to further international popularity and starting a wave of media outlets wanting to capture the band without their masks. Lordi celebrated the victory with a free open-air performance in Helsinki’s Market Square. The band’s impressively elaborate and pyrotechnically inclined live show was then showcased in America for the first time, with Lordi playing shows at Bamboozle and Ozzfest, before touring alongside Type O Negative.

Lordi’s fourth studio album “Deadache” was released in 2008 with a more keyboard and horror focused direction, and featured songwriting contributions from all members of the band. After Lordi spent time recording with Jeremy Rubolino and formed Kiss guitarist Bruce Kulick, Lordi released the single “This is Heavy Metal” ahead of their fifth studio album “Babez For Breakfast” in 2010. The album marked the departure of drummer Kita who was replaced by Otus, who surprisingly died shortly afterwards, leading the band to cancel a number of their shows in early 2011.

The band has subsequently released the 20th anniversary CD/DVD compilation “Scarchives Vol. 1” in 2012, Lordi’s sixth full-length album “To Beast or Not to Beast" in September 2012, led by the single “The Riff”, and “Scare Force One” in 2014.

Live reviews

Lordi are one of the biggest bands to come out of Finland still maintaining their title as the only hard rock act to win the Eurovision Song Contest, and they are the only Finnish winner too. They have been a band for over twenty years and are still doing what they’re doing, releasing an album like clockwork every couple of years and then following the release with a world tour.

Watching this band my first thought is, how on earth do they perform in those huge suits? They must be boiling. Mr. Lordi, leads the proceedings ever so well though, regardless. The theatrics that accompany this band are on such a large scale, with the strobe lights and the set combined with the costumes and masks to create the aesthetics of a horror movie scene, in the best way possible. It’s a evening, I do think that this audience could give a little more though, considering the effort that Lordi have put in. Hard Rock Hallelujiah rounds of the evening nicely complete with pyrotechnics.

The venue was the perfect size for them. I had the front row! All songs sounded amazing live and they looked amazing!! The merch stand was at the back for ease of access for everyone, and the stage was the right size so everyone had a good view. There was a great mix of good and old songs from Lordi, and every member had their own solo and time in the spotlight so there was something for everyone. I even got a picture with Silver Dust! Best evening, i couldn't hope for anything more.

Une joyeuse décadence savamment orchestrée! J'ai adoré !

Absolutely Spectacular Night at the Wakefield Warehouse. LORDI were fantastic & they sertinly know how to put on an entertaining show. Excellent venue & value.

Just what expected... a freaking AMAZING SHOW! Lordi was on point in every way! Fun and exciting with all the hit songs from the group. They didn't disappoint us at all! EVERYONE GO SEE THIS SHOW!

They sound better live then on albums and know how to throw a concert and entertain us. So amazing I loved them. First metal concert and I want more. I hope they come again

LORDI – Tour 2022

Last year has been a challenging, if not threatening, time for bands and musicians around the world: it was a time of uncertainty, doubt and the underlying fear of never being able to return to the status quo of touring.

But metal bands have never been those who can easily be brought down by difficult circumstances: and so the Finnish hard rockers LORDI are going to visit the big stages in the world again.

Next spring the Swedish band SABATON will take you to 26 different cities in 17 countries and bring their modern metal to the people. Among other things, they are accompanied by the heavy metal veterans LORDI.

"A Michael Bay wet dream": How Sabaton, Babymetal and Lordi conquered Wembley Arena

Lordi. Babymetal . Sabaton. All three bands have been dismissed at points of their careers due to perceived gimmicks - the "monster" band, the "Kawaii" band, the "tank" band - but a sold-out, full capacity Wembley Arena proves that no matter what dismissive statements you might make against them, there are at least 12,000 fans who prove these bands are a very beloved part of the heavy metal firmament. 

First up for metal's wildest tour of 2023 are Lordi, the Finnish shock rockers who took top spot at Eurovision in 2006 and set a precedent for many hopeful metal acts for years to come (including Voyager and Lord Of The Lost , who will be representing Australia and Germany respectively this year). 

At their best, Lordi are purveyors of spooky shanties designed for mass consumption, but Wembley seems somewhat subdued in response for their opening set. The cheers of approval for the band's arrival don't quite mesh with the lack of mass sing-alongs as the band tuck into a short but sweet set, but nonetheless a combination of nostalgia and brilliant songwriting ensures we feel the magic of Would You Love A Monsterman?, Blood Red Sandman and Devil Is A Loser , with a thumping Hard Rock Halleujah making us feel like its 2006 all over again.

The fact these are the first shows Babymetal has played in the UK as an official trio for almost five years feels like Big News. While they have long had a stand-in third member in the form of the Avengers dancers (Momoko Okazaki herself being one of these), the addition of "Momometal" as an official member lends a natural sense of cohesion to Babymetal's performance.

“We are so excited to be back at WEMBLEY ARENA,” Su-Metal offers, a canny reminder that this band have been playing to thousands of people almost since their first appearance in the UK. The next 40 minutes flies by in a blitzkrieg of sweeping riffs, blaring synths, soaring symphoncs and utterly captivating stagecraft as the trio show off a near-inhuman level of precision in their choreography.

For all the infectious, hyperactive energy of their early songs, its new cuts Divine Attack - Shingeki and Monochrome that feel the most enormous, absolutely titanic tunes that make songs like Gimme Chocolate!! feel almost cartoonish in comparison, the audience clearly braying for more as the band depart.

Calling Sabaton "the tank band" feels utterly redundant at this point. Yes, their drumriser is a tank, but at Wembley Arena it's only a very small part of a Broadway-sized theatrical production Sabaton are putting on, an enormous sign over the stage proclaiming The Tour To End All Tours going some way to the sheer scale the Swedes are delivering in 2023. 

A cascade of exloding fireworks signals the band's arrival and feels especially chaotic as Sabaton rush the stage with all the intensity of an actual invasion - and by god if they don't have the ordinance to back it up. From a seemingly endless supply of pyro that turns an already-warm Wembley into a scorching sauna to everything from actors portraying historical figures like Gavrilo Princip and German flying ace the Bloody Baron to smoke canons, fireworks-firing bazookas and a snow machine, every song seemingly comes with its own flourishes that makes the whole thing feel like a Blockbuster epic. 

And if you took away those special effects? Well, then you have some of the most infectiously joyous songs in the heavy metal can(n)on. Ghost Division , Carolus Rex, Stormtroopers, Soldier Of Heaven - each of these massive anthems waves the flag for the bombastic, triumphant spirit that has made heavy metal such a formidable force these past 50 years, to coin a phrase from Babymetal: "transcending generational divides and language barriers". 

Whether they're playing practical jokes on each other - at one point singer Joakim Brodén's incredibly sweaty face is plastered with plectrums - or mavelling at the fact the first time the band played London was at the now-closed 200 capacity Purple Turtle (where they sold just 90 tickets), it all feels like vindication for Sabaton sticking to their guns - and tanks, and planes that conceal keyboards - for so long to literally conquer one of London's most revered large-scale venues. 

In turn, Wembley utterly adores the band for it. The sing-alongs come thick and fast for the more bombastic numbers, while ballads like Motorhead cover 1916 and Christmas Truce met with a sea of shining lights that capture the wonder and magic Sabaton embody. 

With grit, perserverance and yes, a stage show that comes off like a Michael Bay wet dream, Sabaton have added their own epic entry to the heavy metal pantheon, shrugging off the "gimmick" tag to show time and again they are exactly what this genre has been built upon, metal legends in their own right.
