KAYAK is an online travel company that helps you find airlines, hotels and rental cars. If you want to cancel your KAYAK reservation, you should be able to do this online, as long as you can provide enough information for KAYAK to call up your receipt. However, be aware that airlines and other companies you've booked with through KAYAK may have their own cancellation rules.

Cancelling your Kayak Reservation

Step 1 Open the KAYAK booking URL in your internet browser.

  • If you can't remember the confirmation number, click on “Credit card” and enter the last 4 digits of your credit card, along with your phone number. Click “find.”
  • The final option is to click on “Email” and enter the traveler's email reservation. Choose “send.” KAYAK will send you the information you need to cancel your reservation.

Step 4 Once KAYAK finds your receipt, you should be able to cancel the reservation.

  • You will have much better look getting a refund for airline tickets if you cancel them within 24 hours; with Kayak, it's best to cancel by midnight of the same day you booked the reservation. [3] X Research source [4] X Research source
  • The cost of cancelling tickets after the 24-hour period can end up being not worth it. That's why they're called "non-refundable" tickets.

Contacting Customer Support

Step 1 Call KAYAK to get extra help.

  • If you are unable to cancel the reservation using the online method, you can call KAYAK's customer support team for more assistance. [5] X Research source
  • Call 1-978-451-0771 or 1-855-529-2501. You could also provide feedback by filling out an online customer support form at the same page.

Step 2 Read the terms and conditions.

  • KAYAK has an entire page of them. [6] X Research source For example, KAYAK makes it clear that you must abide by the terms and conditions of the air carriers and other organizations it connects you with through its site.
  • That means those specific rules can make a difference as to whether you will get all of your money back. So figure out if they are acceptable to you before you book. Since KAYAK is a middleman for many different hotels, car rental companies, and airlines, it's impossible to provide one set of rules.

Dealing with Suppliers through KAYAK

Step 1 Read the fine print of the booking before you purchase it.

  • So depending on the airline, you might qualify for a full refund or only a partial one. [7] X Research source
  • Each airline has its own rules about changing or cancelling flights, and what this will cost you.
  • Before booking a hotel through KAYAK, read the conditions that are listed next to it. [8] X Research source

Step 2 Research the company before signing up.

  • Understand how KAYAK works. KAYAK orders reservations on your half, providing your billing information or credit card to the supplier or travel service.
  • It's a good idea to read about the experiences other people have had with the company before you sign up.

Community Q&A

Community Answer

  • Research costs on your own before using a middleman. Go directly to the hotel's website, for example, to see what a room costs there. Thanks Helpful 0 Not Helpful 0
  • It can't be stressed enough; always read the fine print. Thanks Helpful 0 Not Helpful 0

A joy to use

Kayak has been a fantastic company to use for anything travel! & has continued to impress me with their fun and very easy to use features. Airline companies often set standard pricing for their flights and the caveat that the normal person is looking for it matching all these flights with their specific needs i.e. layover timeline, # of bags, airline make/model, & flight times. A ‘Good Deal’ is a very generalized term and many other apps use that as their main means of persuasion when in fact it’s clear that sites like Kayak are so good at categorizing exactly what meets your needs and alining airliners to your schedule, like advertised they have a multitude of tools like bag number and layover timeline settings with a accurate representation of what the cost will be regardless if it is two separate companies. If you choose a flight selection that has a 2 hour layover for one airliner and you select ‘book’ the airliners website which it directs you to within the app has that selection already selected. I could go on and on about how easy and secure this app is to use so please give it a try.

Use hopper instead

I’ve used hopper forever as I travel monthly. A friend recommended kayak and I have booked 2 trips with it. The first it rerouted my and added another stop without letting me know on a round trip. The second, which inspired this review was a multi city trip. It messed up my reservation and I spent an hour at the help desi fixing it during check in for the first flight. After this story, it rerouted us for our next stop to have a layover in city in the opposite direction without sharing this information to or giving an indication as to what happened to our initial booking. I then went in to move a flight time after already paying for the insurance, I looked up how to do this on their app and when I hit “change” to see other options it simply DELETED our flight reservation with no notification or prompt warning us. We were not given a refund or other alternatives to switch back in or change flights. If you were wondering they do not have customer service as they say you need to contact the airline for assistance as they are only a third party site. For our flight home it has moved our reservation to the following day when I work and with another timely layover. I genuinely never write reviews but I hope this saves someone the trouble 😊

Developer Response ,

Hi there, Feel free to share screenshots or more information about your booking experience with the provider of your reservation via www.kayak.com/support. We'll gladly take a closer look.

I love this app

I got this app for one plane flight, simple as that. I was planning on deleting it right after because I thought I had no use for it. But then I started to realize that any trips I was planning on taking would show up on this app and would be organized by time and date (because I connected my email). I’m planning on taking an Amtrak to the airport and then back again & accidentally chose the wrong date for the train back, and because Kayak organizes the trips so well, I was able to catch that but if not for this app, that would have been $20 down the bin & a missed class. I honestly love this app because there are no annoying adds that pop up when I’m trying to figure my plans out & it helps me organize everything so well. It also works offline when I’m looking at my already planned trips which will help out a lot when I’m abroad. I don’t use the search tool within the app for hotels cars or flights, but they have that option as well.

Beware of “trips” portion of App

I have used kayak for a long time but recently had a very terrible experience and will not be booking flights through kayak anymore. Beware of the “trips” portion of the app. I bought a flight through kayak and it was added to my trips. There were changes to my flight, but my trips still reflected the original times, even though I used kayak to purchase my flights. Long story short I ended up missing my flight and paying lots of money in change fees. It’s odd to me that the company automatically lists the flight you purchased through their company under “trips” but do not update the flight information if an airline changes flight times. Even when I missed my actual flight my app still said “4 hours 27 minutes until take off”. Super unfortunate end to a trip, but learned my lesson to never book with kayak again. Also, when trying to sort and talk through this issue, I was unable to speak with anyone from kayak. The closest contact to a human you can get is through an email.

Kayak + Skyscanner: Bait and switching now...

Posted the same bad review for Skyscanner too: A few years ago, I stopped using Momondo because it would advertise flights for one price, THEN raise the price AFTER you input your credit card information. Kayak (and Skyscanner) isn't that bad, but for the last month, every time I've checked a price for the EXACT same flight for the EXACT same date, it advertises the same "bait" price, then after clicking on the adjacent link, the price doubles, then triples. Not sure why you'd advertise a one-way flight for $254 FOR A MONTH, but then increase it to $720. Shouldn't you stop the BS bait price on the umpteenth search? Should I blame the cookies? And you must realize that customers can actually search a plane's seat availability, so the claim that the seats are limited is tired, not just dishonest. So, way to go, Kayak. You're just as useless as Momondo and Skyscanner now.

I rented a car through Kayak after doing lots of comparative shopping on other sites. I was very disappointed to discover at the Hertz car rental counter when picking up the car that taxes were not included and would be assessed there. All info at Kayak had suggested that the price I paid in advance was including everything (excepting any insurance coverage, obviously). Had I known, there were certainly other competitive prices at other sites which openly disclosed the tax charges. I definitely felt like I'd been mislead by Kayak. I contacted Kayak about this matter & they diverted blame to Hertz. LAME.

We booked a round trip flight from NY To Nice France that required a connecting flight change in Rome. The insurance to cover missed connections through Kayak was exorbitantly expensive. I made the decision to take my chances. Our first flight home was delayed and we missed our connecting flight home to NY from Rome. When I called Kayak for help rebooking my flight I knew the cost would be on me but expected to get real help in rebooking. Instead, I was asked why I missed my flight. I told them it was 57 minutes late. So instead of a 2 hour layover it was only an hour. The agent I spoke with was clearly reading from a script that said I still had plenty of enough time to catch my connecting flight. I ran as fast as my legs would carry me to catch that flight but the gate had closed well before I got there. I don't blame the agent I spoke with. I blame Kayak. I knew I was taking a risk. I did not know that Kayak would turn around and blame me for missing the connection and be so incredibly unhelpful in helping me rebook to get home. I ended up rebooking through another company. Bottom line: I think Kayak is fine when there are no travel disruptions. But when there are, Kayak fails miserably. You are better off going with one of their competitors that has a better level of customer service, better training for their agents and more empathy for their customers.

Photo of Toshiko F.

Kayak.com did not book the flight instead they sent me to a travel agency called Crystal travel for the "cheap" flight that came up on its search, but when I wanted to assign seats online the agency ended up calling me and sent an email with a hard sales tactic to complete my reservation. It was a bit aggressive but I went along. They explained that assigned seating would increase my ticket price by $1000! I agreed because I have a child. Then the agency said that for luggage carryon and checked luggage would be a cost but that they "found"a promo code. With that said, over the weekend I found the same flight on Expedia that included the same luggage promotion and gave me the ability to pick my own seat for almost $900 less. So why didn't Kayak do the same?

Classic Bait and switch scammers. They post fake positive reviews, get 20% commission from your bookings and is rated "F" by the BBB. Sept/ 2-23, being investigated by the FTC for Bait and Switch. Stay away and tell others.

Don't use Kayak to book your flights as they usually send you off to another booking agent. In my case it was UNDERPRICER. Unfortunately, we had a death of one of the passengers and had to cancel the flight. I contacted UNDERPRICER 2+ weeks before the flight with ITA. They stalled and did nothing. When I asked for updates, they told me they had "escalated" my request to their "team" multiple times. Finally, on the day of the flight, I had to call ITA to cancel the flights and it took 2 minutes to do what their team couldn't do in 2+ weeks! PATHETIC! At a time we were grieving and needed support, we had only frustration. Pay a little more and buy direct from carriers, at least you'll get to talk to someone who cares about your customer service if anything goes wrong. Stay away from these other companies, there is no one to talk to and you are at their mercy and they don't seem to care.

We booked a car rental from the Ft. Lauderdale Airport recently. We thought we would save money as SIXT cars can be expensive. What I didn't do is read the fine print in renting from Kayak. We arrived at the airport and the rental agency wasn't on site requiring us to take a $35.00 ridiculous taxi ride to a local Sixt. At the agency, we were informed that the car we reserved was not what Kayak arranged. Fine print again. You must read Kayak's agreement as it said or something similar. We rented the car we reserved for a bit more money cancelling any savings we expected to save with Kayak. The taxi ride, inconvenience and extra money we spent on renting the car we expected makes Kayak's services never needed again. We opened up a corporate account with SIXT which gives us a 15% discount on future rentals. This experience has taught us never to use Kayak's services again. Just thought I'd let prospective consumers know that the phrase "Buyer Beware" is applicable here.

Made a reservation on Kayak because it was a few dollars cheaper, only to find out when I arrived at the hotel that I have to pay more money. There was no indication at the time of the booking that there was any amount still due. I called 1 (855) 529-2501 to resolve the issue, but they don't have a live customer agent you can talk to.

If you need to book a flight, DO NOT use Kayak. Go to the airline you want directly, or use a reputable site like Expedia. First, they have a flight price freeze you can pay for, but when you go back the flights are nowhere to be found. This is a scam. Don't do it. When I did a new search and found new flights they were shown as flights on specific airlines (Finnair, Iberia, etc.). I NEVER fly American because they are SO unreliable. So the when the flights I found to Madrid were listed on these other airlines but administered by American I thought it would be ok. I bought that itinerary through Kayak (no, it does not take you to another site), yet the confirmation was sent by a company called Chatdeal. I didn't notice until days later that even though it was the SAME booking number, they had CHANGED AIRLINES on me, and my flights within the US were now on American. The man on the phone said nothing changed (that it was always on American flights). I'm like I can send you the email to prove it! He didn't care. I was unable to change or cancel and had to fly American. Every time I had a question, needed to select meals, pay to check a bag, or needed something corrected, I was told that you have to contact the airline directly. The airline, in turn, told me I had to contact the booking company. And neither would help. True to form American diverted to another airport for an hour to get more fuel, and was very late arriving at DFW. Though by some miracle the Iberia flight was considerably delayed and I made that flight with time to spare, American did not transfer my bag and left it at DFW, losing it for 5 days, and I had nothing I needed for the excavation I was involved in! When I called American they put it all off on Iberia, even though THEY were the ones sitting on my bag in Dallas. The reason I am bringing up what American did, is because I purposely did not book American flights, but Kayak and Chatdeal pulled a bait and switch. Kayak has been advertised for years, so I THOUGHT they were legit, but they are an aggregator that assumes no responsibility for the itinerary you get after you've paid them. You pay THEM, but you are not actually booking through them. DON'T use them unless you want no control over your itinerary, and a completely ruined trip.

cancelled trip to Europe 2 months before travel. Have not refunded my money. This company has many negative complaints. I would never book with them again.

I searched for car rental in reno. Kayak's website provided out of date information which caused me to loose 3 days of my car rental and to rebook another car with much higher rate. My trip was ruined as a result. I wasted stressful hours to resolve this mistake. Amer

Kayak is one of the many websites out there to help you find the best travel deals.

However, unlike other popular OTAs (Online Travel Agencies) that Kayak often gets lumped in with, Kayak is not an OTA — it’s a metasearch engine for travel deals.

Kayak shows you prices from other websites and will send you to that website to complete your booking.

Plus, with tools like Flight Tracker, Guides, and Kayak Trips, this site acts as an assistant travel planner. You can research and organize all aspects of your trip in 1 spot. That all sounds great, right? But how do you actually use Kayak!?

Overall, searching for travel on Kayak is easy as long as you know a few simple tips and tricks to find the best deals.

This guide will show you everything you need to know to use Kayak to search for and book your next trip.

Recommended Flights and Popular Destinations

On the home page, Kayak shows your “Recommendations” and routes to “Popular Destinations” based on your home city all before beginning your first search.

These sections are for very specific flights and dates, so they might not be much help if you’re looking for a certain itinerary. However, if you are flexible, these sections offer some great deals!

For example, I found flights for as little as $79 round-trip from my home airport to popular destinations like Orlando and Myrtle Beach. I also found a round-trip from my home airport to Dublin, Ireland for only $648!

Many of these deals are for flights as close in as 2 weeks, so if you’re looking for a last-minute travel deal, Kayak is a great place to start your search.

Hot Tip: You can change the origin city for your Recommended flights and Popular Destinations by doing a flight search with the new city as the origin.

How to Search for a Flight on Kayak

To start your search on Kayak, input your departure city, arrival city, and dates; then hit “Search” just as you would on any other website. This will take you to the next page, which shows a list of available flights. This is the main booking page and it includes a wealth of information.

By default, the results will automatically populate sorted by “Recommended.” You can adjust this setting to sort by Cheapest, Quickest, Earliest Takeoff, Latest Takeoff, Earliest Landing, or Latest Landing. To do this just select how you want to sort using the drop-down on the upper right-hand side of the screen under the main search bar.

Fee Assistant

This is a great feature that lets you include any baggage fees in the price you’re seeing. Since baggage fees can vary between airlines, this is a great way to see an actual cost comparison without having to search separately for each airline’s baggage fee policy.

Right underneath the Fee Assistant is a large box with a featured flight in it. Keep in mind that this is a sponsored ad, meaning the featured airline paid to be there. While this doesn’t automatically mean the featured deal is bad, it’s smart to keep in mind that it’s not featured simply because it’s a good deal!

This little box at the top left of your screen gives you Kayak’s best estimation of how prices might change in the next week. The box will tell you if it’s a good time to buy, or whether you should wait. This estimation is only for the following week, so I recommend taking their advice with a grain of salt.

If you toggle “Track Prices” to ON, you can create a custom price alert for your itinerary . This requires an email address and automatically sets up an account for you with Kayak.

Kayak's Flight Predictor

Booking Preferences

Under the “Our Advice” box on the left side of your screen, you can go into lots of detail about your flight preferences. Customize your list of available flights using any of the following filter options:

  • Number of Stops
  • Booking Sites
  • Flight Quality
  • Layover Airports

Narrow flight search results on Kayak

Compare Sites vs. Kayak

On the right-hand side of your screen, you’ll see this box where you can compare what you find on Kayak to numerous online travel agencies and travel websites.

Clicking on the “Compare” button will take you directly to the chosen website and automatically search your itinerary.

Searching Flights and Completing Your Booking

The main middle section of the page is where you’ll find available flights for your chosen route. Click on “View Deal” to see more information about the flights and complete your purchase.

Depending on the route you’re choosing, the View Deal button will take you to either the airline’s website, Kayak’s booking tool, or another OTA such as Expedia or Orbitz to complete your purchase. You will be able to see where the booking is from right above the orange button.

On some flights, there is more than one booking option, but thankfully Kayak features the lowest price option first. To view other options for your chosen flight, click on the down arrow next to the orange View Deal button. This will display a drop-down box of all the prices on different websites.  Please note that this is not available on all flights.

Bottom Line: Kayak is not an online travel agency — it’s a travel search engine.

Hacker Fares

On some flights, instead of seeing the airline displayed under the price, you will see “Hacker Fare.” Don’t worry — nothing is being hacked and these prices are totally on the up and up!

All this means is that Kayak found a good deal on a flight by bundling 2 one-way tickets (usually on different airlines) instead of a round-trip on 1 airline. This can be a great way to get the best deals.

Kayak Hacker Fare

The only thing to keep in mind with these Hacker Fares is that you have a little less protection if something goes wrong.

Let’s say you’re going to Chicago for a long weekend, but bad weather cancels your outbound flight. Since it was a short trip, you just decide to cancel the whole thing. If you had a round-trip ticket, you’d have much more leverage to get a refund for the second leg of your trip.

But since you booked a Hacker Fare, your return flight is a one-way on a different airline, meaning that return flight has no real relationship to your outbound flight. It would be hard to get a refund for the second leg of your trip; as far as the airline is concerned, this is stand-alone flight. While this is a fairly rare situation, it’s good to be aware of if you purchase a Hacker Fare flight.

Search for a Flight by Destination

Another way to search for flights on Kayak is at the bottom of the home page, where you’ll see a number of popular cities. Click on “Flights” directly under the city name to bring up a page that shows lots of flight deals from your home airport to your chosen destination. These are all for specific dates, so again flexibility is the key to making this tool work for you.

Search for cheap flights on Kayak by destination.

Kayak Explore

This is a cool feature that is a little hard to find. On the top menu, click on the drop-down box from the “More” tab, and then click on Explore.

Using this tool, you can select your home airport, date range, price range, and trip duration to see where you can fly within those parameters. It’s a fun way to choose a destination when you have an idea of when you might like to travel but aren’t sure where you want to go.

If you hover over the price box on the map, you can see what city the flight arrives in. Once you’ve found your destination, click on the city name, then click on “Find Flights” on the right side to choose your flights and complete the booking.

You can also use the Kayak Explore tool to search for a themed trip, such as Amazing Beaches, Family Friendly Cities, UNESCO Sites, or Hiking Hot Spots. After choosing your home airport, dates, price range, and travel time, choose your travel theme on the right side of the page. This will narrow your search to only destinations featuring the theme you chose.

Kayak Explore

Searching With Flexible Dates

Sometimes having a day or 2 of wiggle room in your travel plans can save you big bucks! Using the 3-day flex search tool, you can see your selected travel dates plus or minus 3 days. This is a great way to see if you can save some money with a little flexibility.

To use this feature, select “Flexible Dates +/-” on the left side of the calendar drop-down box. You can also choose a Flexible Weekend or Flexible Month search. Now when you click on the Search button, you’ll see a chart of prices so you can easily see the cheapest days to fly to your chosen destination.

Hot Tip: Even a day or 2 of flexibility can lead to big savings! Be sure to search for your trip with flexible dates to see your best options.

Kayak Direct

This is a cool page under the “More” drop-down on the main menu. Click here to see all the places you can fly directly from your home airport. This tool also displays the approximate flight time, distance, and airlines that fly the specific route. It’s a pretty neat tool to check out if you’re looking for a destination you can fly to without a layover.

Booking Through Kayak

Occasionally it will appear that the flight you chose is bookable through Kayak ; this will show up as a Kayak price. However, while it looks like you’re booking through Kayak, you are really only using Kayak as a user interface — the booking is actually through a third party (usually an online travel agency like Travelocity or Priceline ).

This is important to know: if you have any problems, you will need to contact the party through which you booked, not Kayak. In this case, the ticket was booked through Priceline even though the user didn’t click through to that website.

Booking Flights On Kayak

Searching for a great hotel on KAYAK is really simple. First, choose “Hotels” from the top menu. Then input the number of rooms, number of guests, city, and dates you’re looking for — click on the magnifying glass icon to search.

On the left side of the page, you’ll see all the options to filter your search. You can narrow your results by stars, review score, price, freebies, location, neighborhood, amenities, ambiance, and property type.

Right above all of the search options is a box to click through to a map, which shows your chosen city with all the hotels marked on it. Hover over each dot to see the hotel name, rating, and price, or click on each dot to continue with booking that hotel.

Hot Tip: You can also search for popular areas for eating, sightseeing, shopping and nightlife on this map.

The middle section of your screen will have a list of all the hotels available for your chosen dates. Just like with flights, these default to being sorted by “Recommended.” If you want to sort by price, adjust the settings at the top right underneath the search box.

Note that the price you see to the right of the hotel name is not necessarily the cheapest price! However, the great thing about KAYAK is that you can see the prices for each hotel on lots of different OTAs as well as the hotel website. You’ll see these prices underneath the hotel name and rating; click the drop-down menu for a full list.

Tips for Booking Hotels Through Kayak

Prices shown for hotels don’t include taxes, which can be pretty high. For example, I searched for a hotel for a long weekend in Chicago and chose the Park Hyatt (listed for $475 per night from Expedia). When I clicked through to complete the booking, I discovered per night taxes of $82.66!

Hot Tip: Prices shown from hotel websites are not member rates. Be sure to check the member rates on your specific hotel’s website — they are usually lower!

When I clicked through to Expedia , Orbitz , Travelocity , and Hotwire , they all featured the $475 per night price and added taxes for a total of $2,230.64 for a 4-night stay.

However, when I went to book directly with Hyatt, I found a non-member total for 4 nights of $2,230.60 ($.04 cheaper), while the member price was $2,141.35 for 4 nights. So by signing up as a World of Hyatt member (which you should definitely do because it’s free!) and booking directly through Hyatt, you’d be saving $89.29.

Plus, you will be eligible to earn hotel points and take advantage of any elite status you may have when you book directly through the hotel’s website.

Hacker Stay

Another hotel available for the same weekend had an advertised price of $429 on all the major OTAs including Expedia, Orbitz, Travelocity, and Hotwire. This was also the price offered directly from the hotel, making the total for a 4-night stay booked through any of these sites $2,014.60.

Hot Tip: Booking a “Hacker Stay” fare can save big bucks on your next hotel stay.

However, this hotel had a “Hacker Stay” rate of $392 per night. The total price for the Hacker Stay was $1,839.45 — that’s a savings of $175.15 for the exact same hotel room!

When I clicked through to book, I found that this stay consisted of 1 night booked through Hotels.com and 3 nights booked through Expedia. If you choose this route, you’ll end up with 2 separate reservations and might have to switch rooms halfway through your stay (though the hotel can usually combine those reservations upon check-in).

Kayak Hacker Stay

Save Hotel Choices and Track Prices

You can save selected hotels to come back to later by clicking on “Watch” right under the orange View Deal button. This will automatically create a saved Trip for you with all your hotel selections.

To track prices for your search, just toggle the button at the top right corner of your screen (to the right of the search box) until you see a check mark.

To start your search for a car rental on Kayak , simply input your chosen city plus dates in the search bar at the top of your screen. At the top left you can choose whether you want to drop off the car at the same or a different location as pickup.

Clicking on the calendar icon will bring up a drop-down box to choose your dates, pick-up time, and drop-off time. You can also choose to bring up comparison sites underneath the location box to view prices at Hertz , Hotwire , Priceline , Budget, and Avis .

Just as with searching for flights or hotels on Kayak, searching for rental cars follows a similar pattern. To the left of your screen you’ll find all the options to help narrow your search. You can choose to sort your search by car capacity, car type, payment type, rental agency, price, and other car options like number of doors or type of transmission.

After you narrow your search, all your options will be featured in the middle of your screen. Above the list you can choose how to sort your results (recommended, lowest price, or distance), and you’ll see an alert if it’s a good time to book.

Kayak Car Rental Search

Each listing will tell you the type of vehicle, bag capacity, number of doors, rental company, and whether this is a Special Rate. These Special Rate deals will keep the car rental agency hidden until booking is completed. Use the drop-down arrow in the orange box or section on the right side of the screen to compare Kayaks pricing to other websites.

Finding the Best Price for Car Rentals on Kayak

In an example search, I found car rental prices all over the map. I searched a midsize car for 4 days in Chicago and came up with a price of $200. This doesn’t include tax, so you do have to click through to your chosen website to see what the actual price will be. Here is what I found:

  • Kayak – $216.40
  • Orbitz – Not available once I clicked through, but there were other car options available
  • Thrify – $216.40 (I clicked on their “hot deals” button and got the price down to $207.69)
  • Cheaptickets.com – Not available once I clicked through, but there were other car options available
  • Rentalcars.com – Didn’t show price at all

There was also a “Special Rate” available for a similar midsize car for only $139.19. If you aren’t picky about exact car type or who you rent from, these Special Rate prices offer a great deal.

Lots of people use OTAs and travel search engines to find great vacation package deals. To see Kayak’s deals , click on “Packages” in the search bar at the top of your screen. From here you’ll see a search bar just like in the Flights section.

First, fill in your destination and dates to get a list of flights. Once you select the flight you want, you’ll be able to add a hotel to make a package deal.

Bottom Line: You can save money by booking your hotel and flight together through Kayak’s “Packages” option.

Right underneath your chosen flight you will see the “Add a Hotel” section. To see what kind of deals I could get, I searched for a 5-night trip from Boston to Las Vegas. This search returned 3 featured offers with varying levels of advertised savings, and I could see more deals by clicking on the blue “View More Hotels” button.

Hot Tip: The hotel offerings change quickly! The offers I had changed even when I did the same search only minutes apart. If you see something you like, you should book right away.

The first option was a hotel stay at Treasure Island Hotel and Casino, which advertised a $367 savings. I tend to be skeptical about package deals, so I wanted to check it out myself. Booking this package including a round-trip flight plus 5 nights at Treasure Island would cost $800.86.

Booking the flight separately was $216.37, and booking the hotel directly through their website would be $951.60, for a total of $1,167.97 if booked separately. That does work out to a $367 savings when booking the package, which is pretty significant and exactly as advertised.

Find the Best Times to Travel to Popular Destinations

If you have a destination in mind and are looking to find the most inexpensive time to travel, Kayak’s Packages have you covered there too.

Scroll to the bottom of the Packages tab, and you will see a section called “Search Vacation Deals By Destination.” When you click on a city in this section, you’ll be able to see price trends throughout the year. This tool will show estimated pricing for a package each month, allowing you to pick the most economical option. (Keep in mind these are just estimates and actual prices may vary.)

Kayak Packages

Hot Tip: Kayak no longer has the ability to search for and book cruises.

Kayak Guides is a great tool to start planning some activities for your upcoming trip. Guides can be found by clicking on the “More” drop-down box in the main search bar at the top of your screen.

From here you can input your destination or search by region or popular destinations.

In each city guide, you’ll find general information about the area as well as suggestions on things to do, places to eat, most and least expensive times to visit, and even average weather throughout the year. You can see how to get there including links to take you to search for flights. You can also see information about different areas of the city including links to hotels in that area.

One of my favorite parts of this tool is the map of the city that shows you popular areas for sightseeing, dining, shopping, and nightlife. Just click on the item you want to see and watch the colors on the map change to reveal the popular areas for your chosen activity.

This map also shows hotel locations. For more information, just click on a dot — this will bring up hotel info as well as a link to click through and book.

Kayak Guides Map

Bottom Line: Kayak Guides is a great resource to help plan every aspect of your trip, including best times to visit, local weather, and best areas for sightseeing, dining, shopping, and nightlife.

You can find Kayak trips in the upper right corner of your screen. This is where you can keep all of your trip information and itineraries in 1 spot. There are several options for managing this feature:

  • Add your trip manually
  • Connect your email inbox to import booking receipt emails
  • Forward your booking emails to [email protected].

Once your flights are added, you will be able to see real-time updates for check-in, flight status, and gate change information. Plus, you will be able to access your itinerary offline.

Hot Tip: Use Kayak trips to organize and share all of your vacation details.

If you are traveling with a group, you can share all the trip details with your group by creating a link to your trip information page. Once you’re viewing your trip details, look for the blue “Share” button, which brings up a link to your trip information that you can send to friends and family. You can also allow someone else to edit the trip information from this button.

Kayak Deals can be found under the More drop-down in the main menu. This section differs from Kayak Packages in that you can’t build your own trip; the deals you find here are set packages that all include different things (vacation packages, cruises, flights, hotels, etc.).

Some of these deals were straightforward and easily bookable through an OTA, while others were a little more complicated. For example, I found a 6-day Dublin and Killarney rail vacation package, but I couldn’t just click through and book right away. Instead, clicking through took me to an OTA where I’d need to request a quote. While that’s not really a big deal, it does take more effort than just hitting the “buy now” button!

While you might think Kayak is an online travel agency (OTA) like Expedia or Orbitz, it’s really a different animal. Kayak is a search engine, and it’s a great tool to use to begin your travel planning.

The great thing about Kayak is that it compares prices between all the OTAs you’re familiar with (like Expedia and Orbitz), plus airline and hotel websites. This lets you see where the best prices are without having to go to each individual website.

Kayak also offers tools to help with planning and organizing your trips. It’s a 1-stop shop to research and plan any vacation you can imagine!

Although Kayak is an online search engine where you can find travel, it’s not a website where you can book travel. Kayak pulls prices from other travel websites and points you in the right direction when you’re ready to make a reservation. You’re not actually booking on Kayak.

Let’s say you want to book a night at a hotel, and the same hotel room is available on multiple booking platforms: a hotel’s website for direct booking or an online travel agency such as Expedia. Kayak analyzes information and lets you know where you can reserve the room for your specific dates for less. Then, you decide where to book based on search results.

Because you don’t book any travel components through Kayak directly, you don’t need an account. However, if you create one, you’ll be able to participate in the Kayak Explorer Rewards Program and earn rewards when you book.

How to earn Kayak Explorer Points

Kayak Explorer is Kayak’s loyalty program. It’s free to join and you will earn 2,000 Explorer Points when you sign up. Then, you will earn points on select hotels through the Kayak mobile app.

To earn points, look for an “Explorer Points” icon next to a qualifying booking. If earning rewards is important to you, filter your search results by clicking on the Explorer Points tab.

kayak travel phone number

Rewards post six to eight weeks after you complete your stay. If you cancel your booking before you travel, you won’t earn any points.

How to redeem Kayak Explorer Points

You can redeem your rewards for:

Prepaid debit or gift cards.

Dining discounts.

Travel discounts and more.

Keep in mind that you need to have a minimum of 10,000 points in your account to make a redemption. Also, redemptions for prepaid debit cards are limited to the first 100,000 points redeemed per calendar year.

Kayak Explorer Points vary in value, depending on what they are redeemed for. In the case of a debit card redemption, Kayak Explorer Points are only worth 0.1 cent apiece. That is, a $10 prepaid credit card can be redeemed for 10,000 points.

Points aren’t eligible for a redemption until the following calendar year in which they’re earned. On top of that, the redemption window doesn’t start until March of that following year. So, for example, points posted on Jan. 15, 2022, can’t be redeemed until March 1, 2023.

Do Kayak Explorer Points expire?

Explorer Points expire at the end of the following calendar year in which they’re earned. For example, if you earn rewards on March 15, 2022, they would expire on Dec. 31, 2023. If you haven’t earned enough points to start redeeming them, they expire on March 1 of the following calendar year in which they’re earned.

If you don’t earn any points in a calendar year, then your membership in the rewards program may be terminated.

Who is eligible to enroll in the Kayak Explorer Rewards Program?

The Kayak Explorer Rewards Program is available to U.S. residents only at this time.

Kayak offers users some useful features to help find flights, track prices and figure out when to buy that elusive affordable airfare.

Kayak Explore

Can’t decide where to go? Let fate decide for you.

The Kayak Explore feature allows you to narrow down your next destination based on your budget. If you’re flexible with your destination, this feature is for you.

To start planning your future trip into the unknown, head to the Kayak Explore page. The search tool should pre-populate your departure city based on your location, but it’s possible to change it to any city you want.

You can select exact travel dates or a specific month from the date range box. Filter your trip duration from one day to more than 14 days, select your budget and zoom out or drag the map in the direction you want to go.

kayak travel phone number

If you’d rather have some idea of where Kayak is going to send you, select your trip type from the following options:

Here’s an example of Salt Lake City as the departure city with a budget of $500. We can set the trip type filter to “Anything” and search for trips in the month of November.

kayak travel phone number

Options shown by Kayak Explore include flights to:

Cancun for $466.

Miami for $266.

San Juan, Puerto Rico, for $342.

Click on the destination you’re interested in and find the “Check flight prices” option. You’ll be taken to the regular search page as if you entered your city pairs and travel dates from the home page.

Price forecast

Another nifty feature of Kayak.com is its ability to read a crystal ball and anticipate whether a flight is going to drop or increase in price.

kayak travel phone number

The airfare price forecast is determined based on the millions of previous searches Kayak users have performed, so it’s not 100% accurate at predicting the future, but at least math and trends have been involved in the recommendation.

In the previous example of a flight from Salt Lake City to San Juan for $342, Kayak recommends booking the flight as it was unlikely to become less expensive.

Price alerts

If you’re not happy with the amount you see, you have the option to monitor airfare prices on a given route. Sign up for price alerts with your email to track prices and receive a notification when the cost changes on your desired route.

Price freeze

If you’re happy with the price but aren’t ready to enter your credit card information just yet, you have the option to freeze the prices you see for a fee. This is done in partnership with Hopper.

If the flight cost goes up in price, you pay what’s shown when you freeze the price. If it drops, you pay the lower cost.

For example, freezing the flight to San Juan from the earlier example costs $16, and you have 12 days to complete the purchase. When you’re ready to book a frozen price, follow the instructions sent to your email.

Hacker Fares

This sounds worse than it is. We guarantee that this is completely legit and you’re not going to aviation jail.

Gone are the days of having to book round-trip flights to save money, at least on domestic itineraries. Hacker Fares are one-way flight combinations that save you money on a round-trip itinerary. You have to book two separate flights, but the savings can be worth the extra step.

Here’s an example of a Hacker Fare from Salt Lake City to New York City. Rather than booking a single round-trip fare, this Hacker Fare offered a flight to New York on JetBlue, with a return flight on Delta. All for $257.

kayak travel phone number

Both flights use different New York airports: New York-JFK and New York-La Guardia, so pay attention when you book your tickets one at a time.

Keep in mind that making two separate reservations might mean having to cancel two reservations, so familiarize yourself with the cancellation policies of each carrier, especially if you’re booking basic economy tickets. We also recommend checking baggage rules for each airline as those fees might eat into your savings.

With Trips, you can organize separate travel components, such as flights, hotel stays and rental cars into one itinerary by forwarding your confirmation emails to [email protected] . Access your itinerary in one place any time through the Kayak app or on a computer.

You will receive trip alerts for check-in times, flight delays and gate changes for the flights added to Trips. It’s also possible to share your itinerary with someone else to collaborate on plans or let family members know your location if traveling solo.

Because you’re not actually booking anything on Kayak and going directly to the travel provider or an online travel agency, we recommend credit cards that earn rewards on general travel.

Be aware of scams through Kayak

We booked a rental car through the Kayak website. When we arrived at Bucharest airport, it turned out that the rental company (Priceline) is a scam. There was no staff, shuttle or office, nor cars. We found out that Kayak is aware of the situation but continues presenting their offer as Priceline continues paying them.

Ignores search filters

Every time I request information on cargo vans, I’m given the option to filter my search results. After doing this, I get EVERY car size, from tiny to large. Totally ignores my search criteria if they can’t find a fit.

Extremely Disappointing Experience with Surprice Car Rental and Kayak.com

I am deeply frustrated with the service provided by Surprice Car Rental, booked through Kayak.com (Confirmation Number: Ni2CG0fRRD2HMsf). Upon arrival at Sofia International Airport, I faced a wait of over 40 minutes without any assistance. When a car finally arrived, I was taken to a remote location, far from the airport, only to be told that my reserved vehicle was not available and no alternative was offered. To make matters worse, they took my money without delivering the service I paid for. The staff were unprofessional and rude, leaving me stranded and distressed. This experience is a severe failure of customer service and reflects poorly on Kayak for not ensuring better standards from its partners. I demand an immediate full refund and expect Kayak to address these issues with Surprice Car Rental promptly. This has been a complete disappointment.

Hopeless for flights….

Hopeless for flights….. Crystal Travel and Travel Junction which are two heavily promoted travel agents for flights routinely offer cheaper flights which are never available. It’s a total con on their part. They say it’s dynamic pricing but they deliberately never update the real price to lure in contacts and then try to sell much higher priced tickets. TOTALLY DISHONEST

Terrible Experience with KAYAK and SURPRICE CAR RENTAL - No Support, No Car, and No Refund

I had an incredibly disappointing and frustrating experience with a car rental I booked through KAYAK, and I feel compelled to share my story to warn others. I booked a car with SURPRICE CAR RENTAL through KAYAK, and the problems began immediately. Despite paying through KAYAK, when I arrived to pick up the car, SURPRICE CAR RENTAL claimed they had not received the payment. I contacted them multiple times—four or five times, in fact—and even had the border police reach out on my behalf. Every single time, they insisted they hadn't received the payment. The situation got even worse when SURPRICE CAR RENTAL drove us to a remote location far from where we were supposed to pick up the car, only to tell us that no small cars were available. They offered no substitutes or alternatives, leaving us stranded in the middle of nowhere without a vehicle. We had already paid for the rental, so this was completely unacceptable. But what really adds insult to injury is KAYAK’s complete lack of support. Despite reaching out to KAYAK to help resolve this issue, I received no assistance. As the platform that facilitated the booking and processed the payment, KAYAK should have ensured that the payment was securely transferred to the rental company. Instead, I was left without a car, no support, and a severely disrupted travel plan. This experience was nothing short of a nightmare. I strongly advise anyone considering using KAYAK to think twice, as their lack of accountability and customer support has caused me a great deal of stress and inconvenience. I expected more from a company like KAYAK, but unfortunately, they failed to deliver even basic customer service in this situation.

Broderick of ChatDeal was fantastic

Broderick of ChatDeal was fantastic! He went above and beyond to find flights that would work for me at the lowest fares. He took the initiative to follow up, research flights, and call me two days after I had given up booking flights myself due to the complexity of finding two tickets in different fare classes on the same flights. I’m so glad he did. Throughout our phone interactions on both days, he was patient, professional, and focused on meeting my travel needs. I spoke with several ChatDeal agents in the process of securing my flights, and all of them were professional, but Broderick stands out as exceptional. One of the best travel agents I have ever worked with!

Heaven sent angel

I was trying to find what felt imposible multi city flights for my family and I and after hrs an hrs online I decided to give Kayak customer service a call and I honestly believe Jonas. R was heaven sent. She went above and beyond in helping me. I’ve never experience this level of customer service with any travel agent. I felt she really cared and wanted to help. She truly exceeded my expectations with finding the perfect flights for us and also with her level of customer service. She deserved a pay rise, a bonus and promotion because she literally made me never want to book anything with anyone else but her. Thank you Jonás!!

Enormous hidden charges

Recently booked a car in the UK with them (was redirected to QEEQ, who ultimately the booking was with). The original booking I paid for included a car from Europcar, unlimited mileage and a different drop off to pick up location. When we arrived to collect the car it was an absolute conundrum. The agent at the desk ended up charging us DOUBLE what we had already paid in AUS. He also wanted to charge us an extra $400 for the different drop off, even though we had included this in the original booking, he said it wasn't! It was an appalling experience and I feel like we were completely ripped off.

Misleading Fees and Unresponsive Customer Support

I want to share my experience with the websites Kayak and eDreams in hopes of helping others avoid losing their money through these scam sites. I visited Kayak to purchase a ticket to Vancouver. I selected the ticket I wanted and moved on to the next step, but before I realized it, I had been redirected to eDreams. How I ended up on a different site from the one I started on is truly baffling. During the purchase process, they bombarded me with confusing ads to trick me into paying more for the ticket. In the end, after purchasing the ticket, I realized that my return flight was scheduled just a few hours after arriving in Vancouver. I had wanted a return flight for 7:00 PM, but they booked me for 10:00 AM instead. The way they pulled off such a big scam was astonishing. I called eDreams, and they told me I needed to contact Flair, the agency responsible for the flight. Both companies kept passing me back and forth, and eventually, both said they were sorry and couldn't do anything to help. So, if you value your time and energy, avoid Kayak and eDreams as much as possible. I should also mention that Flair has no regard for its customers. Because their flights are cheap, people don't often complain, which lets them get away with their poor service.

I booked a car at Intercontinental…

I booked a car at Intercontinental Airport during Hurricane Harvey and the late August 2017 and there was a national emergency. All the rental car places were flooded. I could not get a rental car for my trip. It was about a week rental. Not only did I not get my rental car money refunded, there was no contact number I could call. No one answered anything. I was ripped off and no way to recover my money. Every time I see your commercials I think about how you took advantage of me. I will never forget this the date only goes back 1 year and if you respond the email or letter will start out "unfortunately" It does not resolve the fact of what happened. 832 948 5294 Matthew Schoellman

Buzz is the best, incredibly helpful!

The airline had cancelled my original connecting flight and I had called to reschedule but my new ticket was processing for over 2 weeks. I called back yesterday and was connected to Buzz and he was able to resolve my issue and confirm my new ticket in less than 24 hours. I am now confirmed to go see my family for the holidays and I cannot thank Buzz enough!!!

Directed to wrong airport

I picked an airport, and selected a flight. For some reason, the flight was changed to a different airport in the same city. I appreciate the low price, but kayak needs to warn people if they are not flying into the airport they are searching for. Now it’ll cost me 100usd and 1.5 hours to Uber to my destination. I’ll still use Kayak, but this is just dumb. Warn people with a pop up if they are not flying into their airport of choice!

Probably one of the most useful…

Probably one of the most useful features of Kayak is explore. This is a useful device when looking for EF or just some bargains. Kayak - unlike GF - shows prices for (all?) Asian LCCs, and also has a very good car rental search. Yesterday, thanks to Kayak, I saved 25e on renting a car in April (Keddy by Europcar was shown, while Argus and AutoEurope were not). I agree that OJ, DOJ and more complicated Kayak routes work poorly, and often not at all.

Airlines cancelled an international…

Airlines cancelled an international flight. I got no notification from Kayak about cancellation. I only knew about it when I went to airlines website to pick a seat. It was panic mode. Getting to a Chat deal representative was a nightmare. The phone systems sent me in a loop and online chat was robotic and useless. No one got back to me even after days of trying. But once I got to a human, Felipe was the representative and he was fantastic. He fixed the errors, found alternative flight and rebooked everything and called back to confirm that I got the new email and the seats I want.

Great customer care from Felipe !!!

I've booked through kayak and had a few problems with Airlines cancelling flights. BUT Felipe - one of their customer care people ( Chatdeal?) has been brilliant - I would give him personally 5 * . He was calm , reassuring and more importantly he got the changes required done! If you need help ask for him!
