Cruise Ship Deaths – Annual Statistics, Causes and Real Examples

You may be wondering how many people die on cruise ships annually. It’s inevitable that with so many people taking a cruise, some will die onboard. The majority will die from natural causes but not all are as innocent.

In recent years there have been many incidents of accidents, suicides, and murders.

How Many People Die on Cruise Ships Each Year?

There are many sources which quote 200 as the number of cruise ship deaths each year. The real number is likely to be higher as not all cruise lines and countries share their death statistics. The majority of deaths that occur onboard cruise ships are from natural causes although some die in accidents, murders, suicides, or overdoses.

In the article, we will look at common cruise ship death causes and some examples which made it to the mainstream media.

Cruise Ship Death Statistics

There are relatively few sources that provide accurate death statistics for cruise lines. Accidents, suicides, and murders are well reported but deaths from natural causes are often missed from the figures. The website CruiseShipDeaths.com records many of the deaths that happen on cruise ships including deaths of crew members.

There are approximately 30 million people who took a cruise in 2019. Assuming that each took a cruise for one week that means that there are around 500 thousand guests at sea at any one time.

200 deaths out of 30,000,000 yearly passengers equate to 1 in 150,000 guests. This means that there are around 3/4 deaths per week.

Cruise Ship Deaths – Murders

Although cruise ship murders are incredibly rare, they do happen. Murders are usually committed by a person that the victim knows and the majority of cruise ship murders involve arguments that escalate or a previous history of abuse.

For obvious reasons murders which happen on cruise ships are very rarely pre-planned.

It’s worth noting that guns are not allowed on cruise ships under any circumstances and as a result, most murders are either stabbings or involve pushing the victim into the ocean.

Tamara Loraine Tucker Murdered on Carnival Elation

Tamara Loraine Tucker was allegedly murdered by her ‘long term love’ onboard the Carnival Elation in 2018. The couple was taking a four-night cruise from Florida at the time.

An argument broke out just before midnight in their cabin on the 13th deck. Her partner Eric has admitted that he strangled her and pushed her over the balcony. She fell two decks down to deck 11 and died of blunt force trauma.

Eric was charged with murder in the second degree.

Kristy Manzanares Murdered on The Emerald Princess

In 2017 Kristy and Kenneth Manzanares were taking a cruise to Alaska onboard the Emerald Princess. Kristy was a 39-year-old mother of three and was traveling on the cruise with her husband and three teenage daughters.

Kenneth beat Kristy to death and attempted to throw her body overboard. He was caught by another person dragging her body out onto the balcony.  The murder took place in adjoining cabins on deck 9, cabins D726 and D728.

The video above shows news footage from the time of the incident. It was reported that other passengers heard Kristy’s screams and that the teenage girls suspected that their dad would do ‘something like this’.

Almarosa Tenorio Murdered on The Royal Princess

In 2018 Almarosa Terorio was cruising on the Royal Princess with her husband when she fell to her death. The couple was actually cruising in an inside cabin at the time but witnesses report seeing a man strangle her and then throw her overboard. The incident happened on the lido deck.

She fell down from deck 16 onto a lifeboat on deck 7 with such force that it actually broke the glass on the lifeboat. Many passengers report seeing blood and glass. The ship was held while the incident was investigated.

Darla J Mellinger Murdered on The Ryndam – Murder-Suicide

In 2015 Darla J Mellinger was murdered onboard Holland America’s Ryndam by her husband. They were taking a 14 night Caribbean cruise to celebrate the Easter holiday.

It’s reported that her husband John found a text from Darla to another man. He broke some glass in the cabin to make a weapon and stabbed Darla to death. After the murder, he hung himself in the bathroom.

Prior to the cruise, Darla had been to the hospital a stab wound to the chest which the pair had explained was caused by an accident.

Cruise Ship Deaths – Suicides

Sadly there are a number of people who decide to end their lives on cruise ships, mostly by jumping from the ship. It’s not only passengers who do this but also sometimes crew too.

I was actually on board a cruise where a man went overboard. We heard an announcement in our cabin and our next port stop was canceled so that we could search for the missing man. A number of other cruise ships also came from close by to join the search. He was never found and was presumed dead.

What would happen if you fell overboard on a cruise? The following post details step by step the processes that are in place:

Cruise Ships do Stop if You Fall Overboard – Here’s What Happens

Crew Suicides and Coronavirus

In 2020 an increased number of crew members committed suicide during the coronavirus crisis. In may 2020,  5 crew members committed suicide on board cruise ships. Most jumped to their deaths and some hung themselves in cabin bathrooms.

Crew members at the time were unable to leave their cruise ships and were facing months at sea, sometimes quarantined to their cabins, with no real end in sight.

Cruise Ship Deaths – Accidental Deaths at Sea

Accidents happen at sea in the same way that they happen on land. Cruise ships are incredibly safe and the safety of passengers and crew is the primary concern for all.

That said many accidents still happen onboard when guests break rules, enter restricted areas, or simply just have bad luck. Accidents don’t just happen at sea but also when guests are on land on excursions.

Common examples of accidental cruise ship deaths include:

  • Trips or Falls
  • Accidents in Port
  • Entering restricted areas
  • Climbing from a balcony to another balcony

Salvatore Anello – Royal Caribbean Accidental Death

One of the highest-profile and most heartbreaking accidental death stories to occur on a cruise in recent years is that of grandfather Salvatore Anello who dropped his 18-month-old granddaughter from a window on to the dock below. The accident happened on the Freedom of the Seas.

“I wasn’t drinking and I wasn’t dangling her out of a window. I just wanted to knock on the glass with her as we did together so many times before. I was just so horribly wrong about our surroundings,” he said. – source.

Salvatore pleaded guilty to negligent homicide. In the above video he explains what happened and how he is trying to rebuild his life for his family.

Larent Mercer – Royal Caribbean Accidental Death

In 2019 a 16-year-old boy died when he tried to climb across outdoor balconies after losing his room key. Sadly this isn’t an isolated incident with many other people also meeting the same fate.

Some passengers who have died in this way have done so because they were trying to climb from deck to deck or to show off to friends and fellow guests.

Harmony of The Seas was docked in Labadee, Haiti at the time and the boy fell to his death landing on the pier below.

It goes without saying that you shouldn’t EVER try to climb on, or around, cruise ship balconies. Losing your room key isn’t a problem at all, lots of people do it, and if you do you just need to go to reception to get a new card issued to you.

Royal Caribbean Harmony Of The Seas Children

Despite all of the warnings some guests still do not respect the cruise lines rules and they try to do things like jump from the balconies. Guests who do such irresponsible things are usually banned from the cruise line for life, and from other cruise lines too. The video below shows one of these people.

No cruise line wants to have to recover a dead body or clean up the mess!

Cruise Ship Deaths – Swimming Pool Drownings

As with any swimming pool, there is always a risk of drowning. On some cruise lines, you will find lifeguards but this isn’t mandatory and not all cruise lines have them. Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line have recently added lifeguards but Princess cruises are one cruise line that doesn’t have lifeguards on duty.

There have been multiple drownings on Princess ships.

In 2014 a 29-year-old woman drowned on board the Sapphire Princess. A year later in 2015, an 8-year-old boy was found drowned also onboard Sapphire Princess.  In 2019 a man in his 30s was found drowned on board the Caribbean Princess.

Of course, Princess aren’t the only cruise line where this has happened:

In 2019 a 10-year-old boy drowned on a Genting cruise ship.

In 2015 an 8-year-old boy drowned onboard Liberty of the Seas.

In 2015 a 10-year-old girl drowned on board the Norwegian Gem.

There are many more examples.

Costa Concordia

In 2012 the Costa Concordia struck an underwater rock and capsized near Tuscany. The cruise ship was only eight years old and the captain on board was Francesco Schettino.

I’ve cruised with Costa since the event and many people still refuse to cruise with the cruise line because of this accident. In reality, it wasn’t the fault of Costa cruise line but that of a severely negligent captain.

Francesco Schettino

Francesco decided to change the route of the cruise ship which caused the accident. The ship sailed closer to land than she normally would and as a result, she overturned. 32 people lost their lives and captain Francesco was charged with manslaughter and sentenced to 16 years in prison.

It’s a maritime tradition that the captain always goes down with his ship. Meaning that the captain should make sure that everybody else is off the ship before they disembark. Francesco didn’t do this and decided instead to save himself. He disobeyed orders to go back to the ship.

Now you go to the bow, you climb up the emergency ladder and coordinate the evacuation. You must tell us how many people, children, women and passengers are there and the exact number of each category,” said officials to Francesco Schettino. “What are you doing? Are you abandoning the rescue? Captain, this is an order, I am the one in charge now. You have declared abandoning ship,” he said, adding: “There are already bodies.” “How many?” Schettino says, prompting the cutting reply: “That is for you to tell me, what are you doing? Do you want to go home?” – source.

It’s estimated that the disaster cost Costa Cruises, owned by Carnival, around $2 billion dollars. To learn more about how the cruise industry overcame this disaster and other disasters similar to it, check out this video below:

Cruise Ship Deaths – Accidental Deaths in Port

As mentioned above some passengers do get injured, or die as a result of their activities when in port or on land. Cruise ship and organized excursions are usually very safe but it’s impossible to remove all risks from every activity.

Ovation of The Seas

One of the largest losses to life in recent years from an accidental death in port is when the Whakaari volcano in New Zealand erupted in 2019. Guests from Royal Caribbean’s Ovation of The Seas were visiting the island at the time.

At the time of the eruption, there were reportedly 47 people on the island and 19 people were killed, most on Royal Caribbean’s excursions. The victims included children as young as five.

Cruise Ship Deaths – Natural Causes

The majority of people who die on cruise ships do because of natural causes. Common causes are strokes and heart attacks as these strike quickly with little warning. People don’t send to board cruises if they have ongoing serious medical problems that aren’t well managed.

Travel insurance can get very expensive if you have pre-existing medical conditions.

It is incredibly important that you have travel insurance for any cruise. Onboard medical expenses are very expensive and costs can quickly add up if passengers need to be airlifted off the ship. I’ve been on a couple of cruises where the ship has had to make extra called to drop off passengers who were unwell.

Never ever ever ever cruise without travel insurance! Even if you are just cruising to the Caribbean from the USA, you NEED insurance. Compare quotes (for free) here: – USA – UK

Bruce Campbell

In 2019 Bruce Campbell was playing bingo onboard the Carnival Sunshine when he suffered a stroke. He was originally sent to a hospital in Freeport, Bahamas but they didn’t have the medical facilities to treat him.

He was cruising with his wife at the time and they didn’t have the necessary funds to get him back to America. Amazingly an anonymous donor donated the $20,000 needed for Bruce to be flown back to the US for treatment. This highlights the importance of travel insurance mentioned above.

Sadly Bruce later passed away but he was able to donate his organs to save numerous other people’s lives.

The video above talks more about this story.

Peggy Bowman

Peggy Bowman died at the age of 89 on board a Cunard cruise. She took a world cruise annually and died shortly after visiting the port of Honolulu in Hawaii. Peggy had been cruising since the 80s and died of a heart attack on board.

What a way to go!

Understanding the Risks of Cruise Ship Travel

When it comes to understanding the risks of cruise ship travel, it’s crucial to be aware of the potential dangers that can lurk beneath the seemingly idyllic surface.

One important factor to consider is age-related vulnerabilities. Cruise ships cater to a wide range of ages, with older adults being a significant demographic. As we age, our bodies become more susceptible to various health issues, making us more vulnerable while on board. It’s essential for travelers and their families to evaluate their own health conditions before embarking on a cruise.

Additionally, insurance coverage plays a vital role in mitigating risks associated with cruise ship travel. Many cruise lines offer insurance policies that cover medical emergencies and trip cancellations. Understanding what these policies include and how they protect you is crucial before setting sail.

Analyzing cruise ship death statistics provides valuable insights into the overall safety of this mode of travel. By examining these numbers, we can better understand any patterns or common factors contributing to fatalities at sea.

Analyzing Cruise Ship Death Statistics

While analyzing cruise ship mortality statistics, it becomes evident that there is a significant occurrence of fatalities occurring annually.

However, it is important to note that these numbers may not accurately reflect the true extent of deaths on cruise ships due to underreporting incidents.

This lack of transparency can have a profound impact on the cruise industry as travelers rely on accurate information to make informed decisions about their safety.

Understanding the risks associated with cruising is crucial, and having access to reliable data plays a vital role in this process.

Moving forward, it is essential to delve deeper into the age and health factors that contribute to these unfortunate incidents without compromising passenger trust or jeopardizing the reputation of the industry.

Age and Health Factors

It’s mind-boggling how cruise ship mortality statistics reveal a surprising correlation between age, health, and unfortunate incidents. When analyzing the data, several trends emerge that shed light on the risks associated with age and underlying health conditions:

The majority of deaths on cruise ships occur among elderly passengers, particularly those over the age of 70.

Older individuals are more susceptible to illnesses such as heart disease, respiratory problems, and chronic conditions that can be exacerbated by the confined environment onboard.

Pre-existing health conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and compromised immune systems increase the vulnerability to infectious diseases prevalent on cruises.

Poor mobility and limited access to medical facilities contribute to delays in seeking timely medical attention for older passengers.

Understanding these age-related risks and underlying health conditions is crucial in improving safety measures onboard.

Transitioning into the subsequent section about accidental deaths on cruise ships highlights another aspect of this complex issue without missing a beat.

Accidental Deaths on Cruise Ships

Explore the hidden dangers that can unexpectedly arise during your cruise vacation, as accidental deaths on board highlight the need for heightened awareness and precautionary measures.

Accidents on cruise ships can occur due to a variety of factors, such as falls overboard, fires, or even collisions with other vessels. However, it is important to note that there may be underreporting of these incidents by cruise lines, which can make it difficult to accurately assess the true number of accidental deaths each year.

Investigation procedures are in place to determine the cause and responsibility for these accidents, but they can sometimes be complex and lengthy. It is crucial for passengers to remain vigilant and informed about safety protocols while onboard.

Moving forward into the subsequent section about medical emergencies and deaths at sea highlights another aspect of risk management during a cruise vacation without missing a beat.

Medical Emergencies and Deaths at Sea

Be prepared for unexpected medical emergencies and the somber reality of mortality while at sea, as the vast expanse of ocean magnifies the vulnerability and fragility of human life.

When a medical emergency arises on a cruise ship, immediate and efficient action is crucial. Cruise ships are equipped with onboard medical facilities that can provide basic medical care, but more serious cases may require medical evacuation procedures.

These procedures involve transferring the patient to a land-based hospital via helicopter or other means. The availability and effectiveness of these procedures vary depending on factors such as location, weather conditions, and the severity of the situation.

It is important for passengers to familiarize themselves with the ship’s medical facilities and emergency protocols in order to ensure their safety and well-being.

As we move into discussing outbreaks and contagious diseases, it is vital to understand how these incidents impact both individual health and overall cruise ship safety measures.

Outbreaks and Contagious Diseases

The impact of infectious diseases on cruise ship mortality is a significant concern within the industry. Outbreaks and contagious diseases can spread rapidly in the close quarters of a cruise ship, leading to increased illness and potential fatalities.

To mitigate this risk, preventative measures and health protocols are implemented onboard to limit the transmission of infections and ensure the safety of passengers and crew members. These measures include enhanced sanitation practices, mandatory hand hygiene, isolation procedures for sick individuals, and medical screening before embarkation.

By adhering to these protocols, cruise lines strive to maintain a healthy environment for all onboard and minimize the impact of infectious diseases on mortality rates at sea.

Impact of Infectious Diseases on Cruise Ship Mortality

Infectious diseases significantly impact the mortality rate on cruise ships each year. These diseases can spread rapidly in the confined spaces of a cruise ship, posing a risk to the health and lives of passengers.

To understand the gravity of this issue, let’s take a closer look at two subtopics:

Infectious disease control strategies: Cruise lines have implemented various measures to prevent outbreaks. They have rigorous cleaning protocols and frequently disinfect common areas. Additionally, they have established medical facilities onboard to handle potential infections.

Impact on the cruise ship industry: Outbreaks of infectious diseases can have severe consequences for the cruise industry. News of illnesses onboard negatively affects customer confidence and future bookings.

Considering these challenges, it becomes clear that preventative measures and health protocols are essential in ensuring the safety and well-being of passengers and crew members alike.

Preventative Measures and Health Protocols

To ensure the safety and well-being of passengers and crew members, it’s crucial for cruise lines to implement effective preventative measures and health protocols. These measures include rigorous health screenings before embarkation to identify individuals with symptoms or potential exposure to infectious diseases. Additionally, onboard medical facilities must be equipped with trained professionals and adequate resources to handle any medical emergencies that may arise during the voyage.

Cruise ships have implemented various health protocols such as enhanced sanitation practices, regular disinfection of high-touch surfaces, and increased availability of hand sanitizers throughout the ship. Social distancing measures are also enforced in public areas, dining venues, and entertainment spaces.

By having these preventative measures and health protocols in place, cruise lines aim to minimize the risk of infectious diseases spreading onboard. This not only ensures a safe environment for passengers but also protects the reputation of the cruise industry as a whole.

Transitioning into the subsequent section about the ‘legal and regulatory framework’, it is important to understand how these measures are guided by established guidelines and regulations set forth by governing bodies.

Legal and Regulatory Framework

Cruise ships have a legal and regulatory framework in place to ensure passenger safety, including measures for addressing unfortunate incidents such as deaths. The cruise industry and government authorities take the legal implications surrounding deaths on cruise ships seriously. Government regulations mandate that cruise lines report any death that occurs during a voyage, regardless of the cause. These reports undergo thorough investigation to determine if criminal activity or negligence was involved. Cruise lines are also required to have medical staff on board to provide immediate assistance in emergencies. Laws governing liability and compensation for victims’ families are in place. Passengers and crew members should be aware of these legal requirements and understand their rights to ensure a safe environment onboard.

Moving forward into the next section about public perception and media coverage, it is crucial to examine how these incidents are portrayed and understood by the general public.

Public Perception and Media Coverage

When discussing the subtopic of public perception and media coverage, it is important to consider how cruise ship deaths are portrayed in the media. The way these incidents are presented can greatly influence public opinion and shape the narrative surrounding such tragedies.

Factors that influence public opinion include the tone of media coverage, sensationalism, and the use of expert opinions. All of these contribute to shaping how society perceives cruise ship deaths.

Media Portrayal of Cruise Ship Deaths

Imagine stepping into a world where the media paints cruise ship deaths as riveting tales of mystery and intrigue. It’s no secret that media bias exists, and when it comes to reporting on cruise ship deaths, ethical reporting often takes a backseat.

The media sensationalizes these incidents, focusing on the drama rather than providing objective information. This portrayal creates a distorted perception of the frequency and severity of such incidents, leading to unnecessary panic among the public.

To engage the audience further, here are four key aspects of media portrayal regarding cruise ship deaths:

  • Dramatic headlines that capture attention but may not accurately reflect reality.
  • Emphasis on individual stories rather than statistical analysis.
  • Sensationalized visuals that amplify fear and anxiety.
  • Lack of context or balanced reporting.

This biased representation influences public opinion and shapes how people perceive the safety of cruise ships.

Transitioning into influencing factors on public opinion, it is important to consider other sources of information beyond what is presented in the media.

Influencing Factors on Public Opinion

Step into a world where your perceptions of cruise ship safety are shaped by various factors beyond the media’s biased portrayal. Public opinion is influenced not only by the media but also by personal experiences, social interactions, and cultural beliefs. These factors play a significant role in shaping how individuals perceive the safety of cruise ships. The media’s influence cannot be discounted, as sensationalized stories often dominate headlines and create a negative perception of cruise ship safety. However, it is essential to consider other influencing factors that may provide a more balanced perspective.

To better understand these influences, let’s take a look at a table that summarizes some key factors affecting public opinion on cruise ship safety:

It is crucial to recognize that public opinion is not solely shaped by media influence but rather influenced by various complex factors. Understanding these influences can help us develop a more nuanced understanding of how perceptions are formed. Now let’s delve into the next section about safety measures and improvements without skipping a beat.

Safety Measures and Improvements

Take a moment to consider the countless lives saved and the peace of mind gained when cruise ships prioritize safety measures and make significant improvements.

Safety regulations play a vital role in ensuring the well-being of passengers and crew members. Stringent guidelines are in place to ensure that cruise ships adhere to strict safety standards, including regular inspections and audits.

Additionally, emergency response protocols are continuously updated and practiced, ensuring swift and effective action in case of any unforeseen incidents.

Cruise lines invest heavily in advanced technologies such as state-of-the-art navigation systems, surveillance cameras, and fire prevention measures to minimize risks onboard. These measures not only enhance passenger safety but also contribute to building trust among potential travelers.

As we transition into discussing personal responsibility and risk management, it becomes clear that while cruise ship companies have a crucial role in maintaining safety standards, individuals must also take accountability for their actions to ensure a safe cruising experience.

Personal Responsibility and Risk Management

Ensure your own safety and peace of mind by understanding and adhering to the personal responsibility and risk management measures required onboard cruise ships. Personal accountability is crucial when it comes to staying safe at sea. By taking necessary precautions, you can mitigate potential risks and enjoy a worry-free vacation. Here are some key measures to keep in mind:

By embracing these risk mitigation strategies, you can play an active role in ensuring a safe environment for yourself and fellow passengers on cruise ships. Remember, personal responsibility matters!

When it comes to navigating a cruise ship, there are several key points to keep in mind.

First, navigational tools and equipment play a critical role in ensuring the ship stays on course. From electronic charts to radar systems, these tools provide valuable information to the navigational team.

Second, safety measures at sea are of utmost importance. Cruise ships are equipped with advanced safety systems, such as lifeboats and life rafts, to ensure the safety of passengers and crew in case of emergencies.

Lastly, cruise ship speed is carefully managed to ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey for all onboard. The ship’s speed is determined by factors such as weather conditions and fuel efficiency, with the goal of providing a comfortable experience for passengers while maintaining a timely schedule.

Navigational Tools and Equipment

While navigating, cruise ships heavily rely on advanced tools and equipment to ensure safe offshore journeys. Navigational instruments such as radar, GPS, and electronic charts play a crucial role in providing accurate information about the ship’s position, surrounding obstacles, and weather conditions. These tools help the crew determine the ship’s course and make necessary adjustments to avoid potential hazards. Additionally, cruise ships adhere to strict maritime regulations that require them to have up-to-date navigational equipment and experienced personnel on board. This ensures that the ship operates within designated shipping lanes and avoids collisions with other vessels. By utilizing these navigational tools and complying with regulations, cruise ships can confidently venture far offshore, offering passengers unforgettable experiences at sea. Moving on to the next section, let’s explore the safety measures in place to protect passengers and crew onboard.

Safety Measures at Sea

To ensure the well-being of everyone on board, safety measures are implemented to protect passengers and crew at sea. These measures include:

Why falling off a cruise ship is so deadly

how many cruise ship deaths

A 35-year-old Australian man who fell overboard on his way back to Brisbane. A Louisiana teen who jumped ship on a dare. A 7-year-old boy who died after falling into the ocean, followed by his mother, who tried to save him.

Overboard incidents on cruise ships are incredibly rare. But when they happen, they usually end in death, experts say.

The Coast Guard said last week it had given up on its search for 30-year-old Jaylen Hill, who went overboard during a four-day Carnival Cruise trip from Florida to the Bahamas. It searched more than 1,300 square miles for him.

“We offer our deepest condolences to the Hill family,” the Coast Guard said on Twitter.

Hill was reported missing by a travel companion hours after he was last seen. Experts say such time gaps between a fall and the start of a search are a big part of why overboard incidents are so deadly.

Even if crew members are immediately aware of the incident, it takes the average ship at least a mile to turn around. The ship usually dispatches life boats and alerts authorities, such as the Coast Guard, which may not be close enough to assist, said Ross Klein, a cruise industry researcher and retired professor at Memorial University of Newfoundland. In many cases, ships are not aware that someone has gone overboard until a travel partner reports them missing, which could be hours or days later.

By then, it’s often too late.

“It’s a huge ocean. Just being found at all would be incredible,” Klein said. “The longer you are out there, whether you’re alive or not, the lower the possibility of being recovered. The vast majority of people are gone forever.”

Even in cases where a fall is noticed immediately, a lot can go wrong.

“The fall itself can kill you, a cruise ship engine can suck you underneath the water, fear and anxiety or intoxication could prevent you from swimming — there’s many different scenarios,” said Brett Rivkind, a Miami lawyer who specializes in maritime law and represents families in overboard cases. A person can also become unconscious from hypothermia in as little as 15 minutes , depending on sea temperatures.

At least 386 people were reported to have gone overboard, voluntarily or by accident, from 2000 to 2020, according to data Klein compiled. He began tracking overboard cases in 1995 using media reports, tips, information requests and other methods, later serving as an expert witness before Congress.

“People overboard was an area that hadn’t been studied, and, really, there was no data,” he said. “Even within the industry, they said back in 2012 and 2013 before Congress that they don’t keep track of this.”

While it’s true that tens of millions of people vacation on cruise ships every year without incident, experts say a combination of mitigatable risks and loose safety regulations are contributing to deaths.

In a 2020 study , a professor examined more than 620 cruise deaths from 2000 through the end of 2019. He found that overboard incidents — falling, jumping or being thrown — were the leading cause of death among passengers and crew members, accounting for 23 percent of all deaths.

“It’s a lot more common than people think,” said the professor, Travis Heggie, who tracks tourist deaths around the world at Bowling Green State University in Ohio.

Death rates for overboard incidents vary significantly among cruise lines, according to Klein’s calculations, which he said proves more can be done to protect passengers.

Only a handful of cruise lines have installed man-overboard systems, which use sensors or other technology to immediately detect when a person has fallen or jumped off the vessel, Klein said. (The Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act of 2010 requires vessels to “integrate technology” for detecting falls overboard “to the extent that such technology is available,” and some operators have argued that existing technology is not reliable enough yet.)

The safest cruise lines were able to rescue only 40 percent of overboard passengers, and most save far fewer, he said. The rescue rate was as low as 6 percent on at least one cruise line.

7 facts about the world's biggest cruise ship

The amount of alcohol being served on cruise ships is also a concern cited by several experts, who said passengers are being overserved. Alcohol is involved in up to 60 percent of overboard cases, according to Klein, and alcoholic drinks have become one of the leading sources of onboard revenue for cruise lines in recent years.

“Cruise lines make a lot of money serving alcohol,” Rivkind said, “and what they’ve done over the years is, they’ve moved to all-you-can-drink policies. They often allow them to drink as many as 15 alcoholic beverages a day. To me, that’s a big source of the problem.”

Defenders of the industry often characterize cruise ships as a microcosm of a city, with the same problems that come up on land. But Heggie and others disagree.

“Nobody is saying 23 percent of hotel client deaths are from falling off balconies,” he said.

What happens when someone dies on a cruise ship?

Deaths on cruise ships are rare but they do happen – as was the case on royal caribbean’s ultimate world cruise.

how many cruise ship deaths

A passenger died on Sunday, February 11, on Ultimate World Cruise, Royal Caribbean’s nine-month sailing between seven continents. The news was first shared on TikTok by a passenger, who said she saw the ship’s crew carry a body out of a nearby cabin. The circumstances around the death have not been made public. Royal Caribbean has confirmed the death in a statement, but said that for “the privacy of the guest and their family, we have nothing further to share at this time”. The death has, however, raised one question many people might not have previously asked: what happens when someone dies on a cruise ship? Here’s everything you need to know.

Main photo: a helicopter takes off after an emergency on a cruise ship (Alamy stock image)

When someone dies on a cruise ship, the procedures that are followed can depend on the circumstances of the death, the cruise line’s policies and where the ship is. However, a few things will typically always happen.

If the cause of death isn’t immediately clear, the body will usually be examined by the ship’s doctor, if there is one. If a contagious disease is suspected, a quarantine could be introduced — as happened during the early days of Covid — and the ship may need to change course to dock at the nearest port equipped to deal with such circumstances.

Local port authorities will need to be notified of the death and, depending on the circumstances, this may include medical professionals or law enforcement, who may need to board the ship to assist.

Under the Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act, for example, cruises to and from the US are required to report all suspicious deaths, murders and missing persons, as well as any criminal activity, to the FBI. The industry trade organisation Cruise Lines International Association (Clia) has adopted this legislation as a policy that its members follow worldwide. Separately, the US Centers for Disease Control also require all deaths to be reported to the quarantine station for any ships travelling to a US port.

The cruise line must get in touch with the deceased individual’s next of kin or emergency contact, if they’re not on board, to arrange for the body to be repatriated.

The body will be placed in a designated area on board. Larger cruise ships will typically carry body bags and have a morgue with space to store several bodies. On smaller ships, what happens will depend on the facilities available, but storage space will usually be temperature-controlled as the body may be on board for several days if the ship is out at sea, or if the nearest port isn’t equipped to take a body.

On larger cruise ships and cruise lines that are members of Clia, counselling or other support may be offered to anyone who has been affected by the death. The cruise line may also offer assistance with any early disembarkation or repatriation.

How many people die on cruise ships each year?

Stock image: members of an Australian medical assistance team watch a ship depart Fremantle harbour in April 2020 after a Covid outbreak on board (Alamy)

The number of deaths on board cruise ships each year is influenced by many different factors. During the early days of the Covid pandemic, for example, its is likely that an above-average number of people died. A cruise line that caters to an older clientele is likely to experience a higher number of deaths than one with younger guests.

The number of deaths is likely to have have risen in recent years simply because there are now more people cruising than ever. In 2019, for example, there were 29.7 million cruise passengers, according to Clia.

In a study published in the International Journal of Travel Medicine and Global Health in November 2020, researchers found that between 2000 and 2019 there were 557 passenger deaths and 66 crew deaths reported across 78 registered ocean and river cruise lines from around the world. This averages out at just over 31 deaths a year — a tiny number given how many people go on cruises.

Stock image: the most common cause of death among cruise passengers was people falling overboard or onto lower decks (Getty Images)

The numbers varied widely year-on-year. In 2001, for example, there were just three passenger deaths and no crew deaths reported, but in 2015 there were 75 passenger deaths and five crew deaths.

Researchers reported that the most common causes of death among passengers were “people falling overboard or onto lower decks” (23 per cent), “suicide, murder, and a terror attack” (19 per cent), “unspecified natural causes” (18 per cent) and “cardiac incidents” (16 per cent).

For crew, suicide and murder accounted for 29 per cent of deaths, while 24 per cent of deaths were a result of falling overboard or from height.

Do cruise ships have a doctor on board?

Oceangoing cruise ships will typically have at least one doctor and one or more nurses based on guidance from the American College of Emergency Physicians (Acep). On larger ships there may be two doctors and three or four nurses.

On river ships, there isn’t usually a doctor as the ships are never far from the next port. However, most customer-facing staff will have received some first-aid training.

Stock image: cruise passengers watch an emergency helicopter (Alamy)

Are there hospitals on board cruise ships?

Oceangoing ships will usually have some sort of medical facility on board, but it shouldn’t be thought of as a hospital, because it’s simply not as well equipped. Typically it will carry life-saving equipment such as defibrillators and oxygen, some medication and first-aid kits. Larger ships will be better equipped, and may have wheelchairs, stretchers and monitors.

Clia members with ships carrying over 100 passengers usually follow the guidance issued by Acep. This includes having at least one examination room and one ICU room, as well as space to isolate passengers if need be. In terms of equipment there should be, among other things, at least two cardiac monitors, two defibrillators and a lab to test for the likes of electrolytes, malaria and HIV. There should also be a pharmacy carrying medications such as those used for treating heart disease, allergies and some infectious diseases. In short, it can be quite comprehensive.

On river ships, there’s unlikely to be a medical facility. However, there will still be some basic life-saving equipment on board.

Are Cruise Ships Safe? Assessing Accident & Disease Risk

November 12, 2021 / Boating Accidents

Cruise ships are an extremely popular form of travel and entertainment. In 2019, the global cruise industry welcomed aboard more than 29 million passengers .

But are cruise ships safe? A look at available statistics suggests that, in general, cruise ships are statistically safe.

Available statistics show that 448 ‘major’ cruise ship accidents have been reported since 2005.

There is no single governmental organization which investigates and documents accidents on cruise ships in the way that the FAA does with plane crashes. As a result, it is difficult to find authoritative data on the incidence of accidents aboard cruise ships. However, data gathered and compiled by cruisejunkie.com shows that, since 2005, a total of 448 ‘major’ cruise ships accidents have occurred. In this context, a major accident includes a cruise ship which sank, ran aground, caught fire, or collided with an object.

Two recent incidents highlight these risks.

  • In 2012, the cruise ship Costa Concordia ran aground and sank off the Italian coast . Shortly after leaving port, the vessel struck a reef. The impact sheared through the ship’s hull. The tear allowed seawater to seep into the ship and caused the engines to shut off. The ship eventually listed to the starboard side and began sinking in shallow water on its side. This incident resulted in 32 deaths.
  • In 2013, the Carnival Triumph engine room caught fire midway through its voyage. This occurred in the Gulf of Mexico. The engine fire caused major damage to the ship, and it began floating without power. The loss of power resulted in unsanitary conditions for everyone aboard, as the function of toilets and showers stopped working. The passengers and crew were finally rescued after 3 days.

While the above examples are just two of the more than 400 major cruise ship accidents in the past 15 years, both give sense as to the scale of a disaster at sea. But the reality is, 448 major accidents is a small number of accidents compared to the total number of cruises that set sail each year. Based on available statistics, sinking or similar disaster is unlikely to occur while on a cruise ship.

Between 2000 and 2019, a reported 623 cruise ship passengers and crew died.

Researchers who studied passenger and crew member deaths aboard cruise ships found that a total of 623 people were reported to have died on cruises that took place between 2000 and 2019. Of the 623 fatalities, 557 were passengers and 66 were crew members. Eighty-seven percent of the deaths occurred while the ship was at sea, while the other thirteen percent occurred while the ship was docked.

The table below shows the top three causes of death:

Cardiac-related deaths may be the result of underlying health conditions, especially given that the majority of cruise-goers are 50-79 years old . It is very clear that caution must be taken to prevent falls overboard, both by ships and their passengers. Slips, trips, and falls are the most common types of accident for cruise passengers and crew. Both alcohol consumption and passengers climbing atop deck railings contribute to this risk of falling.

To give additional perspective, there are 323 cruise ships in the world operated by more than 20 companies. The total passenger capacity of these ships is more than 540,000. The total number of passengers and crew fatalities pales in comparison to the number of people who board a cruise ship each year.

In this way, hitching a ride on a cruise ship is similar to boarding a commercial airplane. Deaths aboard a cruise ship are rare and the chance of one occurring is small. But the fact remains that accidents resulting in injury or death can and do happen. It is important to be cautious and follow the rules while on a cruise ship.

The COVID-19 pandemic was a reminder for cruise-goers that diseases pose a particularly high risk on cruise ships.

The spread of disease aboard a cruise ship is not a new phenomenon. The CDC says they treat hundreds of cruise passengers for gastrointestinal diseases each year. In 2019, more than 500 passengers and crew aboard a single cruise ship were infected with gastrointestinal disease. This single outbreak resulted in more infected cruise passengers than the entire 2018 calendar year.

The potential for disease outbreak aboard a cruise ship became more evident as thousands of passengers contracted COVID-19 while traveling on cruises in early 2020. Over 700 passengers and crew aboard Diamond Princess fell ill with coronavirus in February 2020. Dozens of other cruise ships reported COVID-19 outbreaks around the same time.  The close quarters on cruise ships, as well as travelers from different geographic regions commingling, facilitate the spread of disease on a cruise. Cruise ships that experienced COVID-19 outbreaks were forced to dock, and passengers and crew forced to stay onboard to quarantine.

The spread of disease aboard a cruise ship is not a new safety concern, but is now much more obvious. Of course, it is very difficult to predict an outbreak. If you are itching to set sail, follow local health guidelines before you board, follow the ship’s health guidelines, and be sure to wash your hands and take other precautions to help maintain a germ-free environment.

Taking a cruise can be a fun, memorable experience. While it is good to remain cautious aboard any type of commercial transportation, in general, cruise ships are statistically safe.

How Many Died on Cruise Ships Each Year?

By Robert Palmer

Cruise ships are often seen as a luxurious way to travel and explore the world’s oceans. However, like any mode of transportation, there are risks involved. One of the most concerning risks is the potential for accidents or incidents that result in fatalities.

According to a report by the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), the number of deaths on cruise ships has decreased in recent years. In 2019, there were a total of 53 deaths across all CLIA member cruise lines, which represents a rate of 0.14 deaths per 100,000 passengers.

However, it’s important to note that this number only includes deaths that occurred while passengers were on board the ship. It does not include deaths that may have occurred during shore excursions or other activities while ashore.

So what are some of the most common causes of death on cruise ships? Let’s take a closer look:

Medical Emergencies

One of the most common reasons for death on cruise ships is medical emergencies. Cruise ships typically have medical facilities on board with trained medical staff, but they may not be equipped to handle all types of emergencies.

If a passenger experiences a serious medical emergency while at sea, it can be difficult to get them the care they need in a timely manner. This is especially true if the ship is in an area that is far from land or if weather conditions prevent helicopters or other forms of transportation from reaching the ship.

Accidents are another common cause of death on cruise ships. Passengers may slip and fall on wet decks or stairs, suffer injuries while participating in onboard activities like rock climbing or zip-lining, or even fall overboard.

While cruise lines take precautions to prevent accidents from occurring, they can still happen. In some cases, accidents may be caused by negligence on the part of the cruise line or its employees.

Illness Outbreaks

Illness outbreaks are another concern on cruise ships. Norovirus, a highly contagious gastrointestinal illness, is one of the most common illnesses that can spread quickly among passengers and crew.

While norovirus outbreaks are typically not life-threatening, they can be very uncomfortable and can lead to dehydration, which can be dangerous in some cases. Other illnesses like influenza or COVID-19 can also pose a risk to passengers and crew.

While the number of deaths on cruise ships has decreased in recent years, it’s still important for passengers to be aware of the risks involved. Medical emergencies, accidents, and illness outbreaks can all pose a danger to those on board.

Introduction

Cruise ships are known for providing passengers with unique and luxurious experiences at sea. From stunning views of the ocean to exciting onboard activities and gourmet dining options, cruises offer a vacation like no other. However, amidst all the allure and excitement, it’s important to remember that safety is paramount.

One concern that often comes to mind when considering a cruise is the question of how often people die on these massive floating resorts. While it’s natural to have such concerns, it’s essential to understand the bigger picture and the safety measures that are in place to ensure the well-being of passengers and crew.

In this article, we will explore the various safety and security measures on cruise ships, provide insight into the statistics surrounding cruise ship deaths, delve into the common causes of death onboard, and highlight some notable incidents. Additionally, we will offer helpful safety tips for passengers to ensure a safe and enjoyable cruising experience.

By gaining a better understanding of the safety protocols and risks associated with cruise ship travel, you can make informed decisions and embark on your vacation with peace of mind.

The Safety and Security Measures on Cruise Ships

Cruise ship operators prioritize the safety and well-being of their passengers and crew. To ensure a secure and enjoyable journey, these floating resorts are equipped with various safety measures and protocols. Here are some of the key safety and security features you can typically find on a cruise ship:

  • Lifeboats and Life Rafts: Cruise ships are equipped with an adequate number of lifeboats and life rafts that can accommodate all passengers and crew in case of an emergency. These vessels are regularly inspected and maintained to ensure they are in working order.
  • Emergency Drills: Before the ship sets sail, mandatory safety drills are conducted to familiarize passengers with emergency procedures. These drills include instructions on how to put on life jackets, locate emergency exits, and gather at designated assembly points.
  • Medical Facilities: Cruise ships have onboard medical facilities staffed with qualified medical professionals to handle any medical emergencies or health-related issues that may arise during the voyage.
  • Security Personnel: Trained security personnel are present onboard to ensure the safety and security of passengers. They monitor the ship, handle any security incidents, and provide assistance to passengers in need.
  • CCTV Surveillance: Cruise ships have a comprehensive network of surveillance cameras strategically placed throughout the ship. These cameras help monitor activities onboard and aid in identifying and resolving any security concerns.
  • Fire Safety Measures: Cruise ships are equipped with state-of-the-art fire detection and suppression systems. Regular fire drills are conducted to train crew members on fire safety procedures and to ensure the prompt detection and control of any potential fire hazard.
  • Advanced Navigation Systems: Cruise ships are equipped with advanced navigation systems, including radar and GPS technology, to ensure safe navigation and avoid collisions with other vessels or obstacles.
  • Strict Compliance with International Regulations: Cruise ships adhere to strict international regulations, such as those set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), to ensure the highest level of safety and security standards.

It’s important to note that cruise ship companies continuously evaluate and update their safety protocols to meet or exceed industry standards. Passengers should familiarize themselves with the safety information provided by the cruise line and follow all instructions and guidelines for a safe and enjoyable cruise experience.

Understanding the Statistics: How Many People Die on Cruise Ships Each Year?

When considering the safety of cruise ships, it’s natural to wonder about the number of fatalities that occur onboard each year. However, it’s important to put these statistics into perspective and consider the vast number of people who embark on cruises annually.

According to industry data, the number of deaths on cruise ships is relatively low compared to the total number of passengers and crew members. The Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) reports that the mortality rate on cruises is considerably lower than on land-based vacations or other modes of transportation.

It is estimated that the annual mortality rate on cruise ships ranges between 0.14 and 0.25 deaths per 100,000 passengers. This statistic demonstrates that cruising remains a safe mode of travel, with a low risk of fatalities.

It’s crucial to understand that the majority of deaths on cruise ships are due to natural causes, such as age-related illnesses or pre-existing medical conditions. While unfortunate, these incidents are reflective of the general population’s mortality rate.

Cruise ships have medical facilities and staff available to provide immediate care in the event of a medical emergency. However, there are cases where passengers may require more advanced medical attention beyond what the ship can provide. In these instances, the ship will assist in arranging transportation to the nearest medical facility on land.

It’s important to note that accidents or incidents resulting in fatalities on cruise ships are rare. Cruise lines have implemented strict safety protocols to minimize the risks associated with onboard accidents, such as slip and falls, drowning, or other accidents that could occur during shore excursions.

By understanding the statistics and realizing that the risk of death on a cruise ship is relatively low, passengers can enjoy their vacation with confidence and peace of mind. It’s always recommended to prioritize personal safety, follow the ship’s safety guidelines, and maintain responsible behavior to ensure a safe and enjoyable cruise experience.

Common Causes of Death on Cruise Ships

While the overall mortality rate on cruise ships is relatively low, it’s essential to understand the common causes of death that may occur onboard. These causes can vary, and it’s important for passengers to be aware of the potential risks. Here are some of the common causes of death on cruise ships:

  • Natural Causes: The majority of deaths on cruise ships are due to natural causes, such as heart attacks, strokes, or other medical conditions. Cruise ships have medical facilities and professionals onboard to provide immediate care, but in some cases, passengers may succumb to pre-existing health conditions.
  • Accidents: While accidents leading to fatalities on cruise ships are relatively rare, they can still occur. Slip and falls on wet surfaces, drowning incidents in pools or at sea, or accidents during shore excursions can result in severe injuries or death. Passengers should exercise caution and follow all safety guidelines to minimize the risk of accidents.
  • Medical Emergencies: Some medical emergencies that occur on cruise ships can result in fatalities. While cruise ships have medical facilities, there may be cases where the onboard medical team is unable to provide the necessary treatment, and evacuation to a land-based medical facility becomes necessary.
  • Intentional Acts: Tragic incidents involving suicides or homicides can, unfortunately, occur on cruise ships. Cruise lines take these incidents very seriously and work closely with law enforcement agencies to investigate and address any illegal activities or acts of violence.
  • Communicable Diseases: Outbreaks of communicable diseases, such as norovirus or COVID-19, can happen on cruise ships. These outbreaks can lead to severe illness and, in rare cases, fatalities. Cruise lines have implemented strict health protocols and increased sanitation measures to prevent the spread of such diseases.

It’s crucial to note that while these causes of death may occur on cruise ships, they are still relatively rare compared to the total number of passengers and crew members who sail each year. Cruise lines continuously strive to improve safety measures and protocols to minimize the risks associated with these common causes of death and ensure the well-being of their guests.

Passengers can contribute to their own safety by following all safety guidelines, participating in safety drills, and reporting any concerns or incidents to the ship’s crew. By being aware of the potential risks and taking necessary precautions, passengers can enjoy their cruise with peace of mind.

Accidents and Incidents: Notable Cases of Deaths on Cruise Ships

While deaths on cruise ships are relatively rare, there have been notable incidents over the years that have raised awareness of the importance of safety onboard. It’s important to highlight these cases to understand the measures taken by the cruise industry to improve safety standards. Here are a few notable cases:

  • Costa Concordia (2012): One of the most well-known incidents is the Costa Concordia disaster. In January 2012, the cruise ship ran aground off the coast of Italy, resulting in the death of 32 people. The incident highlighted the importance of proper navigation, emergency response procedures, and crew training.
  • Explorer of the Seas (2014): In January 2014, an outbreak of norovirus occurred on the Explorer of the Seas, resulting in more than 600 passengers and crew members falling ill. While no deaths were reported in this incident, it served as a reminder of the potential health risks that can arise on cruise ships.
  • Grandeur of the Seas (2013): A fire broke out on the Grandeur of the Seas in May 2013, causing the ship to lose power and resulting in several injuries. Fortunately, there were no fatalities. The incident underscored the importance of fire safety measures and crew training in responding to emergencies.
  • MS Westerdam (2020): In February 2020, the MS Westerdam faced scrutiny when it was denied entry into several ports due to concerns over COVID-19. While no cases of the virus were found onboard, this incident highlighted the challenges faced by the cruise industry during global health crises.
  • Other Incidents: There have been cases where individuals have fallen overboard from cruise ships, resulting in fatalities. These incidents highlight the need for enhanced safety measures, including improved railing designs and surveillance systems, to prevent such tragedies.

It’s important to note that these incidents, while tragic, are not representative of the overall safety record of the cruise industry. Cruise lines actively learn from these incidents and continuously enhance safety protocols to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

Passengers can contribute to their own safety by familiarizing themselves with emergency procedures, obeying safety guidelines, and reporting any concerns or incidents to the ship’s crew. By working together, the cruise industry and its passengers can continue to prioritize safety and ensure a secure and enjoyable cruise experience.

Safety Tips for Passengers on Cruise Ships

While cruise ships have robust safety protocols in place, it’s important for passengers to take personal responsibility for their safety onboard. By following these safety tips, you can help ensure a safe and enjoyable cruise experience:

  • Attend Safety Drills: Participate in mandatory safety drills, including the muster drill, which provides important information on emergency procedures, life jacket usage, and evacuation routes. Pay attention to crew instructions and familiarize yourself with the location of emergency exits.
  • Stay Alert and Observe Safety Signage: Be aware of your surroundings and pay attention to safety signage throughout the ship. These signs provide important instructions and warnings about potential hazards.
  • Practice Good Hygiene: Maintain good personal hygiene by washing your hands regularly with soap and water, especially before meals and after using the restroom. Use hand sanitizers provided onboard, and follow any additional instructions during times of outbreaks or illness concerns.
  • Adhere to Pool and Water Safety: Follow all pool and water safety guidelines provided by the cruise ship. Pay attention to depth markers, swim within designated areas, and supervise children closely when they are in or near water.
  • Drink Responsibly: If you choose to consume alcohol, do so responsibly. Excessive alcohol consumption can impair judgment and increase the risk of accidents or incidents. Always drink in moderation and know your limits.
  • Be Cautious on Excursions: When participating in shore excursions or exploring ports of call, follow the instructions and guidelines provided by the excursion operators or cruise line. Be aware of your surroundings and exercise caution when engaging in adventurous activities.
  • Secure Valuables: Use the safe in your cabin to store valuable items such as passports, cash, and jewelry. Avoid displaying expensive belongings in public areas, and be cautious of pickpockets or theft in crowded areas.
  • Report Any Concerns or Incidents: If you witness any suspicious behavior, encounter potential safety hazards, or experience an incident yourself, report it immediately to the ship’s crew or security personnel.
  • Stay Informed: Follow all announcements and updates provided by the cruise ship regarding safety, schedules, and any changes in itinerary. Stay informed about any additional safety measures or protocols implemented during your voyage.

By following these safety tips and guidelines, you can minimize the risks and ensure a safe and enjoyable cruise vacation. Remember, personal safety is a collective effort, and passengers should always prioritize their well-being and the well-being of others onboard.

Cruise ships provide an incredible opportunity for travelers to explore the world while enjoying luxurious amenities and unforgettable experiences. While concerns about safety and the occurrence of deaths on cruise ships are natural, it’s important to understand the comprehensive safety measures and protocols that are in place to protect passengers and crew members.

The statistics show that the number of deaths on cruise ships is relatively low compared to the vast number of people who embark on cruises each year. Most deaths on cruise ships result from natural causes, and accidents or incidents leading to fatalities are rare. The cruise industry continuously evaluates and updates safety protocols to enhance the overall safety of passengers.

By adhering to safety guidelines, attending safety drills, practicing good hygiene, and following all instructions from the ship’s crew, passengers can contribute to their own safety onboard. It’s essential to remain vigilant, report any concerns or incidents, and exercise caution during shore excursions.

While notable incidents have occurred in the past, they should be viewed as lessons learned, leading to improvements in safety measures and emergency response protocols. The cruise industry takes these incidents seriously and continuously strives to enhance the safety of passengers and crew.

Ultimately, with proper awareness, preparation, and responsible behavior, passengers can embark on a cruise vacation with confidence, knowing that their safety is a top priority. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the incredible experiences that await you onboard a cruise ship, knowing that you are in safe hands.

Celebrity cruise ship rescues 7 people from small vessel 'adrift' between Cuba and Mexico

how many cruise ship deaths

A Celebrity Cruises ship rescued a group of people from another vessel between Cuba and Mexico this week.

Celebrity Apex “encountered a small vessel adrift and in need of assistance” on Monday, according to a spokesperson for the cruise line.

“The ship’s crew immediately launched a rescue operation, safely bringing (seven) people onboard,” the spokesperson told USA TODAY an emailed statement. “The crew provided them with medical attention, and is working closely with the U.S. Coast Guard.”

The ship departed from Fort Lauderdale for a week-long cruise with stops in Key West, Belize, Cozumel, Mexico and Grand Cayman on Saturday, according to CruiseMapper . The Celebrity spokesperson did not specify who the people in the vessel were.

The ship notified the Coast Guard of the rescue “but there was no U.S. Coast Guard involvement in the case” because of its location, Petty Officer Eric Rodriguez said.

“In accordance with the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), and maritime tradition, it is common and somewhat expected that mariners will render assistance to other seafarers in distress if they have the capability to do so,” he said in an email.

Hotels at sea: Land-based hospitality brands bring guests with them to cruises

The news comes after another cruise ship, Carnival Jubilee, rescued two men stranded in a kayak off the coast of Mexico’s Isla Mujeres in January.

At least 10 people on cruise ships went overboard this year, and 2 miraculously survived

  • At least 10 people have gone overboard off major cruise line ships so far in 2023.
  • Two of those people were rescued and survived.
  • Despite these cases, overboard incidents are very rare, a cruise line trade association said.

Insider Today

The chances of you falling overboard off a cruise ship are extremely low .

But at least 10 people fell off major cruise line ships so far this year, turning fun-in-the-sun vacations into disaster situations — and only two survived the fall into the ocean.

Here's what happened to the passengers who went overboard:

Warwick Tollemache fell off a Royal Caribbean ship and wasn't found during a search

The family of 35-year-old Australian cruise passenger Warwick Tollemache told Nine News he was a "kind, beautiful, and gentle soul who was adored by everyone who knew him."

Tollemache fell into the Pacific Ocean after going overboard off Royal Caribbean's Quantum of the Seas on April 26 at about 11 p.m. while the cruise ship was hundreds of miles off the coast of Hawaii.

The ship's crew immediately launched a search for Tollemache and the United States Coast Guard was ultimately called in to help. The Coast Guard called off its search after crew scoured the waters for two days.

Authorities didn't say how he fell in.

Ronnie Lee Peale Jr. was in his 'happy place' before he fell off a Carnival ship and was never seen again

Virginia resident Ronnie Lee Peale Jr., 35, was on a Carnival Magic cruise to celebrate his partner's birthday when he fell into the water on May 29 after officials say he leaned over a balcony railing on the vessel.

Peale Jr. went overboard as the ship was about 186 miles east of Jacksonville, Florida, and returning from the Bahamas. Carnival Cruise Line said security footage showed he "leaned over the railing of his stateroom balcony and dropped into the water" at about 4:10 am.

The Coast Guard searched over 5,171 square miles and more than 60 hours, but crews could not find Peale Jr.

"He loved the cruise life," Peale Jr.'s fiancée Jennilyn Michelle Blosser told WTKR . "Being able to drink, gamble, and socialize put him in his happy place."

A Royal Caribbean passenger beat the odds when she plunged off the 10th deck of the ship and was miraculously saved

Some who fall in are lucky to be alive.

A 42-year-old US citizen — whose name wasn't publicly revealed — fell overboard from the 10th deck of Royal Caribbean's Mariner of the Seas vessel on June 25 at around 5:45 p.m. as the Curaçao-bound liner was more than 30 miles off the coast of the Dominican Republic.

The woman miraculously survived the fall. One witness told Business Insider that passengers lined up on their balconies and quickly banded together to try and guide the rescue boat as it scanned the water for signs of the woman.

Witnesses said cruise crew members managed to find her and brought her safely back on board in a roughly 45-minute ordeal.

The overboard woman was found to be in "good health" after the fall, the Coast Guard said. A rescue expert told Business Insider her survival was "nothing short of miraculous."

Jaylen Hill jumped off a Carnival cruise ship and was not found during a search, the company said

Carnival Elation passenger Jaylen Hill, 30, went overboard on the vessel on July 23 as the ship was on a four-day Bahamas sailing and on its way back to Jacksonville, Florida.

Hill's travel companion reported him missing after he wasn't seen all day. A Carnival spokesperson said that the cruise line determined Hill "jumped" from the ship "after an exhaustive on-board search and a review of security camera video."

The Coast Guard called off its search for Hill when he wasn't found after covering more than 1,347 square miles.

Reeta Sahani who 'could not swim' went overboard on a Royal Caribbean ship while traveling with her husband

Reeta Sahani was on Royal Caribbean's Spectrum of the Seas with her husband on July 31 in the Singapore Strait, the last day of their four-day cruise to Malaysia.

Sahani couldn't swim, her son would tell The Straits Times .

The 64-year-old mother went overboard while the cruise was on its way to Singapore.

Sahani's husband, Jakesh Sahani, woke up in the middle of the night and discovered his wife was not in their cruise cabin, the Straits Times reported. He notified the ship's officials, who, according to the news outlet, told him that his wife was seen on CCTV footage sitting on the ship's railing at about 4 a.m.

Related stories

The couple's son, Apoorv Sahani, told the Straits Times that the "ship's crew thinks she jumped."

Apoorv Sahani later said in a post on X that his family was given footage from the cruise ship. "With the footage, we have unfortunately learnt that my mother has passed away," he wrote.

Kenneth Schwalbe fell off a Princess cruise ship and couldn't be found

California resident Kenneth Schwalbe , 59, was traveling on the Emerald Princess ship when he went overboard on August 11 about eight miles off the coast of Hilo, Hawaii.

According to Hawaii authorities, police received a report on the morning of August 11 that Schwalbe was last seen on board the ship at around 8:30 p.m. the day before. Authorities searched the ship but couldn't find him.

Hawaii police said that surveillance footage from a camera on the exterior of the ninth deck of the vessel showed Schwalbe "falling from the ship" at about 4:18 a.m.

The Coast Guard couldn't find Schwalbe.

Sigmund Ropich was vacationing with pals before the teenager went overboard from a Royal Caribbean ship

College student Sigmund Ropich of Texas was vacationing with his friends on Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas, the largest cruise ship in the world in August, his sister Savannah Ropich told Business Insider.

On August 29 as the ship was off the coast of Cuba, the 19-year-old Sigmund went overboard .

The ship's crew immediately launched a search and rescue operation but found no sign of Sigmund. Cuban officials called off their search for Ropich after they couldn't find the teen.

Savannah Ropich said in a Facebook post last month: "Although we are continuing to celebrate my brother's life, it does not equate to compliancy with @wonderoftheseas. I am still enraged by the fact that we are celebrating my brother's life without his body."

"The mishandling of the search and constant miscommunication throughout prompts the question.. was my brother's life valued by his ticket and age?" she wrote. "If so and if not, to what extent does this company value a human life to respond with appropriate actions of urgency?"

Royal Caribbean didn't respond to Business Insider's request for a response to Savannah Ropich's criticisms.

A crew member went overboard off an AIDA Cruises ship but couldn't be found during a search

The crew member went overboard off the German cruise ship, called the AIDAperla, on October 22 as the vessel was traveling from Hamburg to Spain.

The cruise ship company said in a statement to Sky News that the captain "immediately initiated all necessary rescue measures in close coordination with the local authorities."

However, the search for the crew member wasn't successful .

Another lucky Royal Caribbean passenger was rescued after going overboard

A passenger traveling on Royal Caribbean's Symphony of the Seas vessel went overboard on October 29 after the ship departed Barcelona and was saved.

"The ship and crew immediately reported the incident to local authorities and began searching for the guest. Thankfully, the guest was successfully recovered and was brought on board," the cruise line told Business Insider.

A person who said they were aboard the vessel at the time posted on social media that they could see spotlights and rescue boats from their balcony during the nighttime search.

A Carnival cruise passenger was seen on surveillance footage jumping off the ship

Tyler Barnett, a 28-year-old father of two from Houma, Louisiana was on a week-long cruise with his younger sister and their uncle when he went missing in the middle of the night.

Barnett was last seen aboard the Carnival Glory — which was heading to the Cayman Islands and Cozumel, Mexico — around 11:40 p.m. on November 12, the day of the ship's departure from New Orleans, his mother, Elisha Reid, told Business Insider.

For over 24 hours, Carnival crews searched the ship and the Coast Guard scoured a 200-mile section of the Gulf of Mexico looking for signs of Barnett.

But, on November 14, Carnival said it had finally found footage of Barnett that showed him climbing up onto a lifeboat and jumping off the ship around 1:40 a.m. on November 13, the company told Business Insider in an email.

The cruise line at first told Barnett's sister, who was also on the ship, that there was no surveillance footage of her brother that night, Reid said.

Reid said she found out her son was missing from a cousin, not the cruise company.

"I have my moments where I break, but I'm keeping the faith," she told Business Insider as the search continued. "I'm keeping the faith. I just want him home."

Despite these cases, overboard incidents are very rare, according to a cruise line trade association

According to a report from the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), there were 212 overboard incidents from 2009 to 2019, and only 48 — or 28.2% — of those who fell overboard were successfully rescued.

"Even one incident is one too many," CLIA told Business Insider, explaining, "The vast majority of cases are either reckless behavior or some form of intentional act. People don't just inadvertently fall over the side of a ship."

According to CLIA, cruise lines have maintained an exceptional safety record and cruising is one of the safest forms of travel.

From 2009 to 2019, the number of "operational incidents" declined by 41% and the rate of "man overboard incidents" declined by nearly 35%, while the industry's total capacity grew by 68%, CLIA said.

Tangled in Steel With No Way Out: How the Crew Stuck in Baltimore Is Faring

Twenty-two seafarers from India find themselves not only trapped in the ship that struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge, but also in an unexpected spotlight.

how many cruise ship deaths

Reporting from Baltimore

Even from miles away, the destruction of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore is a jarring visual: Chunks of steel jut above the water like metallic icebergs. Twisted gray beams protrude in crooked positions. From a park near Fort McHenry, visitors can see the giant cargo ship that struck the bridge and remains lodged in the wreckage.

Less visible, however, are the 22 crew members from India who have remained on the ship, named the Dali, since the disaster on Tuesday.

Little is publicly known about them other than that they are seafarers who embarked on a journey aboard the 985-foot-long cargo ship that was on its way to Sri Lanka, carrying 4,700 shipping containers, when it lost power and struck the Key Bridge, causing the structure to collapse.

Since the accident, which killed six construction workers, the crew members have found themselves in an unexpected spotlight. While keeping the ship operable, they are answering a deluge of questions from officials investigating the nighttime catastrophe, as the evidence of what occurred lies around them in mangled ruins stretching across the bow and deck.

While officials investigate what could have caused the tragedy, another question has emerged this week: What could the crew members, who have limited access to the outside world, be going through right now?

“They must feel this weight of responsibility that they couldn’t stop it from happening,” said Joshua Messick, the executive director of the Baltimore International Seafarers’ Center , a religious nonprofit that seeks to protect the rights of mariners.

Even so, officials have praised the crew’s swift mayday message that was transmitted over the radio as the ship lost power on Tuesday. Before the Dali struck the bridge, traveling at a rapid eight knots, the mayday call helped police officers stop traffic from heading onto the bridge, most likely saving many lives, the authorities said. A local harbor pilot with more than 10 years of experience was onboard, as well as an apprentice pilot in training.

As the ship remains stuck in the Port of Baltimore, where it may remain for weeks, the lives of the crew members have entered an uncertain phase. But one thing is certain: They will no longer cruise through the sea around South Africa toward their destination in Sri Lanka anytime soon.

But they are not going to imminently dock at the port either, as they must wait for enough debris to be cleared to free the ship and reopen the channel to one of the busiest ports in the United States. On Saturday, the governor of Maryland said officials planned to remove the first piece of the debris.

So, for now, crew members are most likely working a grueling schedule to maintain the ship that is similar to the one they would be if they were out at sea. The difference, though, is that they are in an immobile state as the eyes of the world fixate on them, experts said.

“The captain of the vessel and the crew have a duty to the ship,” said Stephen Frailey, a partner at Pacific Maritime Group, which helps with marine salvage and wreck removal.

According to Chris James, who works for a consulting firm assisting the ship’s management company, Synergy Marine, the crew members have ample supplies of food and water, as well as plenty of fuel to keep the generators going. Indeed, when Jennifer Homendy, the chair of the National Transportation Safety Board, went onboard the ship this week, she observed the cook cooking. “It smelled very good,” she said.

But there is still no exact timeline for when the ship might be extracted from the wreckage, Mr. James said. Once the N.T.S.B. and the Coast Guard finish their investigations, he said, “we’ll look at potentially swapping the crew out and getting them home.”

India, the home country of the crew members, is one of the world’s largest hubs for seafarers, according to John A. Konrad, a ship captain and the chief executive of gCaptain, a maritime and offshore industry news website. Though Indian captains and engineers are paid less than their American counterparts, Mr. Konrad said, they make a decent living when they work for three or more months out of the year at sea.

Working on a cargo ship, he said, is a 24-hour ordeal with no weekends off: Every day, decks are checked for maintenance and safety, cooks and cleaners serve the other members, and workers in the engine room keep things on track.

Cargo ship crew members do have some leisurely activities available to them onboard, though, such as video game breaks in cabins, workouts in gyms, table tennis sessions and movie nights. The Dali crew has at least a TV, magazines and books onboard, said Andrew Middleton, who runs Apostleship of the Sea, a program that ministers to sailors coming through the port.

Clistan Joy Sequeira, an Indian seafarer who was not on the Dali but who docked in Baltimore from another cargo ship on Friday, said in an interview that he feared the repercussions that the bridge collapse could have on his industry and his country.

“I’m scared that because this crew is Indian, our international image will suffer,” said Mr. Sequeira, 31. “Maybe we lose jobs.”

Some in Baltimore’s port community have had some contact with the Dali crew, albeit brief, through third parties or WhatsApp. Mr. Messick said he sent the crew two Wi-Fi hot spots on Friday because they did not have internet onboard.

Mr. Middleton said he had been keeping in touch with two crew members, reminding them that “we’re here for them.”

“When I’ve asked how they’re doing, their answers range from ‘good’ to ‘great,’” he said. “So, by their own accounts, they’re OK.”

Mr. Messick said he had also sent a care package to the crew through a salvage company helping with operations. In the package were candy, home-baked muffins from a concerned local and thank-you cards from children.

With so many questions still unanswered about the crew members’ next steps, Mr. Messick said he was eager to provide them with trauma care and emotional support. On Friday, he wrote a letter to the captain, which was delivered by another vessel.

“We’re here to support you,” it read.

Cruise ships are a popular vacation destination for people all over the world.

With millions of passengers sailing each year, it begs the question, what happens when someone dies on a cruise ship?

When someone dies on a cruise ship, there are specific procedures that cruise ships follow to ensure the safety and security of all passengers and respect for the deceased and their family. Cruise lines have specially trained crew members that deal with the logistics of disembarking a body and provide support to fellow passengers and family members.

The vast majority of cruise ship deaths result from natural causes, primarily heart attacks. But, there are occasional murders, suicides, and man overboard situations.

Table of Contents

How Many People Die on Cruise Ships?

There are no accurate statistics about how many people die on cruise ships. Estimates range from 150 to 200 people per year. However, the sad truth is that the actual number is much higher.

There are almost no accurate statistics on cruise ship deaths. While accidents, murders, and suicides are widely reported, deaths by natural causes are rarely published.

Cruise lines don’t exactly promote the number of cruise ship deaths. However, the CDC does require that ships divulge “any deaths or certain illnesses” to the ship’s port state.

From 2014 to 2017, 91 people died on cruise ships that arrived in Fort Lauderdale. And from 2008 to 2018, 129 naturally occurring deaths were reported on vessels arriving in Port Canaveral.

While most passenger deaths are not the cruise line’s fault, it is a reality for hundreds of passengers every year.

However, the number of cruise ship deaths is relatively low when considering the millions of people who sail on cruises. Each year more than 30 million people sail on cruises around the world.

How Do People Die on Cruise Ships?

From toddlers to seniors, people of all demographics sail on cruises. But, it’s no secret that cruising primarily appeals to an older population.

Given that many elderly passengers sail every year, it’s no surprise that age-related deaths are the most common cause of death.

A person may pass away at sea for various reasons, but the most common cause is heart attacks.

According to Cruise Critic , “The vast majority of deaths on cruise ships are natural, with most the result of heart attacks.”

Note: For those wondering, passenger death by falling off a cruise ship is an extraordinarily rare occurrence.

When a cruise passenger dies on a cruise ship, crew members are specially trained to deal with the logistics of disembarking a body and supporting fellow passengers and family members.

It’s impossible to prepare for the death of a loved one. Fortunately, cruise lines are prepared with staff specifically trained to provide support to grieving loved ones.

Contacting The Family

The first priority for crew members is to inform the family.

Firstly, the cruise ship will notify any passengers who traveled with the passenger. It’s easy for cruise lines to determine which guests the passenger was sailing with as they are typically on the same booking.

After notifying the guest’s travel companions, the cruise ship notifies family members back home. Finding the guest’s family back home is a bit more complicated. Many cruise lines require passengers to fill out an emergency contact when they book. If that’s the case, the cruise ship will promptly notify the passengers emergency contact.

In some cases, the travel companions will inform the deceased person’s family.

Cruise ships act as giant floating cities. And they need to be prepared for every possible situation.

For the reason above, cruise lines have a guest care team trained to provide support for grieving families and friends.

These crew members aren’t grief counselors.

Instead, they assist families in working with local authorities, dealing with insurance, and making travel arrangements.

Body Storage (Do Cruise Ships Have Morgues?)

All cruise ships are required to have a morgue and facilities on the cruise to hold the bodies of deceased passengers for up to a week . The morgues are small, with room for three to six, though large ships may have room for up to ten bodies.

According to regulations, the morgue must be separate from food storage areas.

Morgues are located on the lower decks near the medical facilities and are inaccessible to cruise ship passengers.

The cruise ship morgue can store bodies for up to a week. However, in most cases, the body will be disembarked when the cruise ship arrives at the next port – if the country is willing and able to accept it.

In addition to having the proper facilities to store the body, the port country needs to be able to issue a death certificate that is recognized by the passengers’ home country. If the port country cannot perform these functions, the ship will continue to carry the body until reaching a suitable port.

Cruise lines are prepared to deal with situations where they may need to hold the body for extended periods of time. But only when necessary.

Generally, cruise ships will only hold a body as long as needed. Some cruises have several consecutive sea days, such as repositioning or transatlantic sailings. During these extended ocean voyages, the cruise line is prepared to store the passenger until they reach the next port.

On sailings to the Bahamas or Caribbean, the passengers’ bodies will often remain in the cruise ship morgue until the ship returns to the United States. Once the vessel returns from sailing, the body is investigated by the local medical examiner’s office investigates the body.

However, local authorities in every port have the right to require an examination of deceased passengers.

Are the Ice Cream Rumors True?

Strawberry, Vanilla, chocolate ice cream with waffle cone on a marble stone background

There’s a particular rumor about ice cream that’s been circulating for years.

The rumor says that if the cruise ship runs out of room in the morgue, they’ll use the freezer. Guests and crew receive generous portions of ice cream to make room for the bodies.

Former and current cruise ship employees tell conflicting stories. Some say the rumors are true, while others call it an urban legend.

I can’t be sure if there is any truth to the rumor. But I guess it could happen in rare circumstances.

Operation Rising Stars

If you have sailed on a cruise, you’ve probably heard secret codes broadcast over the ship’s intercom. The secret codes allow the captain to communicate essential information to crew members without worrying other guests.

The code “operation bright star” alerts the crew to a severe medical injury or illness that requires immediate attention.

In the case of death, the code “operation rising star” is issued. This code alerts the crew about a death on the ship.

As a passenger, these two codes are the only information you will receive.

Repatriation (Bringing the Body Home)

Royal Caribbean Cruise ship docked at port

Once the ship arrives at a suitable port, the body is disembarked early in the morning to avoid creating a scene for other passengers.

It is typically required to have a passenger accompany the body off the ship. Any passengers that leave the ship must present a passport to leave the cruise ship.

It shouldn’t be a problem considering most cruises require passengers to bring a passport. However, some US-based cruise itineraries don’t require passports.

If the passenger doesn’t have their passport, it adds an additional layer of complication to an already complicated process.

The biggest concern for loved ones is getting the body back home.

The process of repatriation is a long, complicated, and expensive process for the loved ones involved. The repatriation process is full of paperwork, diplomatic calls, language translations, dealing with insurance, contacting a funeral home, making travel arrangements, and more.

Most cruise lines have guest care team members who can assist loved ones with repatriation.

Consulate offices will also help make arrangements with local authorities. They can even serve as provisional conservators of the person’s estate if there’s no one else to fulfill the role.

Whether or not a body can be immediately repatriated from a foreign port depends on several factors. Generally, when the ship reaches a suitable port city, the body will be offloaded, taken to a medical examiner, and repatriated.

Neither the consulate nor the cruise line pays any related costs to bring a loved one back home. While they are ready and able to offer guidance and support, it is up to the family to cover the expenses.

The process is quite expensive, with all the necessary paperwork, travel arrangements, and funeral costs.

Covering the costs is where travel insurance plays an important role.

Travel Insurance

We can’t understate how important it is to have travel insurance when you vacation abroad.

Travel insurance coverages generally include costs for medical care, theft, and expenses for returning a passenger home.

If the cruise passenger has travel insurance , the cruise line and travel companions will coordinate with the insurance company to create a plan. Sometimes, the family must pay the expenses and then claim back with the travel insurance.

Insider Tip

VisitorsCoverage is my preferred choice for cruise travel insurance. They offer cruise-specific plans to protect you and your loved ones while you sail.

Reporting The Death to Local Authorities

Cruise lines are required by law to report passenger deaths to local authorities.

When the ship arrives at the disembarkation port, they need to provide information on the cause of death and passenger information.

Investigation

how many cruise ship deaths

If foul play is suspected, local authorities will conduct an investigation. If the cruise is from the US, the FBI will be called to conduct the investigation.

The investigation team will conduct interviews, watch CCTV footage, and analyze the crime scene.

If the cause of death is suspected murder, the suspect will be held in the cruise ship jail .

Issuing a Death Certificate

When the ship disembarks the body, the port city country assigns the death certificate.

The death certificate is required for the body to fly back home. Not all ports have the necessary infrastructure to keep a body or issue the death certificate.

If the ship stop’s in a port that doesn’t meet these needs, the body will remain in the ship’s morgue until the cruise docks at a suitable port.

Vacation horror as son, 20, jumps overboard from Royal Caribbean cruise in front of family

A cruise turned into a nightmare for people aboard Royal Caribbean’s Liberty of the Seas when a young man jumped overboard shortly after 4 a.m. Thursday.

The 18-story ship was sailing between Cuba and the Bahamas’ Grand Inagua Island when the as-yet-unidentified man jumped off one of the decks.

According to onlookers, his father and brother watched helplessly as he leaped over the side.

Some passengers said it appeared to be an impulsive, spur-of-the-moment decision.

“I had hung out with him and his brother in the hot tub until 3:30,” passenger Bryan Sims tells The Post. ” It was standing room only. He sat right beside me the whole time.”

“He was pretty drunk,” Sims continues. “As we were walking from the hot tub back to the elevators, his dad and brother were walking towards us. His dad was fussing at him for being drunk, I guess.”

“When we got to them, he said to his dad, ‘I’ll fix this right now.’ And he jumped out the window in front of us all.”

“There was a lot of yelling, and the crew was alerted immediately,” another passenger,  Deborah Morrison, told The Post. “His family was horrified. Just beside themselves. I can’t even begin to imagine what they’re going through.”

“It was insane,” says Sims. “It was just surreal.”

In a statement to The Post, Royal Caribbean said its crew immediately sprang into action following the incident.

“The ship’s crew immediately launched a search and rescue effort alongside the US Coast Guard, who has taken over the search,” the statement reads. “Our Care Team is providing support and assistance to the guest’s family during this difficult time. For the privacy of the guest and their family, we have no additional details to share.”

News of the apparent suicide attempt quickly spread among the guests — and many of them tried to help in any way they could.

“The early morning was definitely somber as so many people came out of their cabins to stare at the sea, hoping to be able to aid in finding the person,” said Amy Phelps Fouse, a passenger on the ship.

“Royal Caribbean has been excellent at communicating updates throughout the day,” Fouse continued. “They have asked that people act with compassion in light of the tragic situation.”

Overboard incidents on cruise ships are rare.

According to the Washington Post , about 386 people were reported to have gone overboard on the major cruise lines between 2000 to 2020.

The incidents, whether accidental or intentional, are often deadly.

In the past few years, most cruise lines have enacted onboard safety measures and surveillance systems to help reduce the risk of overboard deaths.

The Coast Guard confirmed to The Post it is still conducting a search and rescue operation in the waters off Cuba. The man has not yet been found.

March 27, 2024 - Baltimore Key Bridge collapse

By Kathleen Magramo , Antoinette Radford, Alisha Ebrahimji , Maureen Chowdhury , Elise Hammond , Tori B. Powell and Aditi Sangal , CNN

Our live coverage of the Baltimore bridge collapse has moved here .

Here's what you should know about the Key Bridge collapse

From CNN staff

A Marine Emergency Team boat passes the wreckage of the Dali cargo vessel in Baltimore on Tuesday.

Officials recovered the bodies of two construction workers who were on Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge when it collapsed early Tuesday morning after a 984-foot-long cargo ship collided into a pillar.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore called the collapse Wednesday " a global crisis ."

"The national economy and the world's economy depends on the Port of Baltimore. The port handles more cars and more farm equipment than any other port in the country," Moore said.

Here's what you should know:

  • The victims: The six people who are presumed dead were from Mexico Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras, according to Col. Roland L. Butler Jr, the superintendent of Maryland State Police. Two bodies were recovered and have been identified as Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes from Mexico and Dorlian Ronial Castillo Cabrera from Guatemala. The two workers were filling potholes on the bridge and were later found trapped in a red pickup truck in about 25 feet of water, Butler said. The FBI is handling notifying the victims' families, Butler said.
  • Recovery efforts: Authorities are pausing search efforts for the four other workers who are presumed dead, because additional vehicles are encased in concrete and other debris, making it unsafe for divers, Butler said. Once salvage operations clear the debris, divers will search for more remains, he said.
  • The investigation: The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation into the fatal incident, according to the agency's chair Jennifer Homendy. During a Wednesday news conference, Homendy said there were 21 crew members and two pilots on board the Dali cargo ship when it crashed into the bridge. She also said a senior NTSB hazmat investigator identified 56 containers of hazardous material, and that some containers are in the water. The agency received six hours of voyage data from the ship and the investigation could take 12 to 24 months to complete, Homendy said. She emphasized that NTSB will not analyze information collected or provide conclusions while on scene of the collapse.
  • Looking forward: Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said rebuilding the bridge will not be "quick or easy" but that it will get done. He said there are four main focus points ahead: reopening the port, dealing with supply chain issues until its reopening, rebuilding the bridge and dealing with traffic issues until the bridge is rebuilt. Biden  pledged the full support  of the federal government in the response and recovery efforts. His administration has already conveyed a sense of urgency to open up federal funding to remove debris and ultimately rebuild the bridge. Maryland has submitted a request to the Biden administration for emergency relief funds "to assist in our work going forward," Moore said Wednesday.

It's almost impossible to place people on the bow of ship due to the unstable structure, fire official says

 From CNN's Sarah Engel

Baltimore City Fire Chief James Wallace said Wednesday that the cargo ship's bridge structure and containers at the bow remain unstable.

"It's going to be very difficult, if not impossible, and very dangerous, to place people on the bow of that boat right now," Wallace told CNN's Kaitlan Collins.

"Naturally, we're still very cognizant of the fact that there are hazardous materials on board the vessel itself," Wallace said, alluding to the National Transportation Safety Board saying earlier that 56 containers were carrying hazardous materials.

Wallace said his team is relying heavily on aerial recognizance, including drones. "That's the only way we're able to see in," he said.

He added that the aerial surveillance has "been able to really assure us right now we have no [chemical] reactions on board."

"It's just utter devastation," NTSB chief says of the bridge collapse site

From CNN's Aditi Sangal

Jennifer Homendy, chair of the National Transportation Safety Board, called the site of the Key Bridge collapse "devastating."

"It's pretty devastating, certainly, seeing not just what's going on with the cargo containers, but just looking at what was a bridge span — three bridge spans that is pretty much gone. It's just utter devastation," she said at Wednesday evening's news briefing.

She added that she is thinking of families who lost loved ones and those who are waiting to reunite with their lived ones.

NTSB interviewed the Dali's captain and some other crew members today, agency chief says

The National Transportation Safety Board has interviewed the ship's captain, his mate, the chief engineer and one other engineer today, according to Chair Jennifer Homendy.

The two pilots on board the Dali at the time of collision will be interviewed tomorrow, she added.

Cargo ship's voyage data recorder is basic when compared to an airplane's, NTSB chair says

From CNN's Tori B. Powell

The voyage data recorder on the cargo ship Dali was a "newer model" but is considered basic when compared to that on an airplane, according to National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy.

"But it is very basic compared to say, a flight data recorder, where we would have 1,000 parameters," she said at a news conference on Wednesday.

The NTSB chief investigator Marcel Muise added:

"It's not a ship-wide system recorder, so most of the sensors that are being recorded are from the bridge. So things like GPS, the audio, rudder feedback, rudder commands are recorded on there. But not engineering, the temperature of each cylinder, power distribution sensors."

There were no tug boats with Dali at the time of the collision. That's normal, NTSB chief says

People look at the collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge while visiting Fort McHenry in Baltimore on Wednesday.

There were no tugs with Dali when the cargo vessel collided with Baltimore's Key Bridge, which is normal protocol, according to National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy.

Remember: At 01:26:39 on Tuesday, Dali's pilot made a general very high frequency (VHF) radio call for tugs in the vicinity to assist, the NTSB investigator Marcel Muise had said.

"The tugs help the vessel leave the dock, leave the port and get into the main ship channel. And then they leave. Once it's on its way, it's a straight shot through the channel. So there are no tugs with the vessel at the time. So they were calling for tugs," she said.

NTSB chair says she saw some containers that were carrying hazardous materials in the water

National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy said she did see some of the 56 containers that were carrying hazardous materials in the water.

When asked how many

When asked how many containers of hazardous materials were in the water, Homendy said:

"I did see some containers in the water, and some breached significantly on the vessel itself," she said. "I don't have an exact number, but it's something that we can provide in an update."

Homendy said that a preliminary report should be out in two to four weeks.

This post has been updated with more quotes from Homendy.

Bridge did not have any redundancy, unlike the preferred method for building bridges today, NTSB chair says

Baltimore's Key Bridge did not have any redundancy, which is included in the preferred method of building bridges in the present day, according to National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy.

"The bridge is a fracture critical," she explained. "What that means is if a member fails that would likely cause a portion of, or the entire bridge, to collapse, there's no redundancy. The preferred method for building bridges today is that there is redundancy built in, whether that's transmitting loads to another member or some sort of structural redundancy. This bridge did not have redundancy," Homendy said.

There are 17,468 fracture critical bridges in the United States out of 615,000 bridges total, she said, citing the Federal Highway Administration.

The 100-foot-long whale dived and circled in the murky, dark waters of the Santa Barbara Channel, looking for a cloud of krill to scoop and catch inside her 20-foot-long jaws.

As the blue whale began to resurface, whale scientist Brandon Southall was in a boat nearby, and he could feel his throat go dry. The whale was coming up right beneath a 200,000-ton transoceanic cargo ship, named the Maladarko, that was heading east from Hong Kong to its destination in Long Beach Harbor.

For the record:

3:03 p.m. Aug. 19, 2021 A previous version of this article misstated the number of whales struck by ocean vessels between 2016 and 2020, according to a NOAA database of whale deaths. At least 112 showed injuries consistent with ship strikes, not 1,001.

3:03 p.m. Aug. 19, 2021

“We were plotting the two paths,” said Southall, a researcher at UC Santa Cruz and the president of an Aptos-based marine biology research firm. “It was a straight collision course.”

Something is killing gray whales. Is it a sign of oceans in peril?

Aug. 5, 2021

With the increase of cargo and cruise boat traffic the last several decades, ships have become one of the deadliest threats whales face in open oceans and coastal waters. Ship strikes are not thought to be a predominant cause of the West Coast die-off of gray whales since 2019, but they are a factor, and an increasing concern.

Between 2016 and 2020, at least 112 beached or dead whales were identified by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration as having “injuries consistent with ship strikes,” according to an informal NOAA database of whale deaths.

Earlier this year, horrific photos of two fin whales pinned to the hull of an Australian naval ship gained worldwide attention. The vessel had been conducting exercises in the waters near San Diego. The two bodies — one 65 feet long, the other just 25 feet — were draped over the hull.

“Anywhere you have major shipping routes and whales in the same place, you are going to see collisions,” said Russell Leaper, an expert with the International Whaling Commission. “Unfortunately, that’s the situation in many places.”

Scientists study a deceased fin whale on a beach

While gray whales and humpbacks make up 70% of the reported strikes in the government’s database, it’s the endangered and threatened populations — such as North Atlantic right whales and the gargantuan Pacific blues — that concern scientists the most. For those whales, each death comes with a risk of population or species extinction.

Southall and colleagues, including John Calambokidis at Cascadia Research Collective, examined behavioral differences in whales during day and night.

They discovered that whales tend to hang out closer to the surface at night and for longer periods of time. This was especially true for blue whales, making them particularly vulnerable.

Scientists are unsure if the whales are resting during the night or feeding on food sources that move closer to the surface during nighttime hours — when krill-eating seabirds and other marine animals are sidelined. But these behaviors add to the complexities of avoiding collisions through mitigation measures — such as keeping an eye out for whales while on a moving vessel.

“Having a lookout isn’t going to help,” said Southall, president of Southall Environmental Associates.

How we delved into the odyssey of whale deaths, even as a pandemic raged

Tracking whales in 2020 was anything but easy. We had to pivot and find new ways to tell the story of a mass die-off along the Pacific coast.

What can make a difference, experts agree, is slowing down boat traffic — allowing whales not only the chance to flee, but possibly reducing the potential injury — and altering shipping lanes when whales are present.

Along the U.S. Atlantic Coast, mandatory speed restrictions during certain seasons have helped reduce right whale mortality. Conservation groups are asking the government to extend the regulations to boats smaller than 65 feet, as well as to expand the areas and times for these maximum speed limits.

Others are hoping to create protocols and communications systems that will allow boat captains, mariners and harbor masters to voluntarily reduce speeds and alter routes where whales are present — in real time.

Elliott Hazen, a researcher with NOAA’s Southwest Fisheries Science Center in Monterey, has developed an app that works like Google Maps — except instead of navigating cars and harried drivers around Los Angeles, it helps boats avoid concentrations of whales.

Using data collected from satellites on ocean temperature, food distribution and currents, WhaleWatch can predict “whale hot spots” and warn vessels approaching such critical areas — giving boat captains a tool and an extra incentive to slow down, and possibly alter their route.

“It’s predictive,” said Hazen. “Here’s where you are most likely to have concentration of whales.”

Gray whales: What to know about our West Coast leviathans and their uncertain future

Gray whales have one of the longest migrations of any mammal and have proved themselves adaptable. But can they adjust to rapidly changing oceans?

Voluntary limits can only go so far. All researchers interviewed for this story said mandatory speed restrictions and route alterations are the best way to reduce whale mortality.

“One of the difficulties is that these cargo vessels, they have a small window of time to unload cargo,” Hazen added. “If slow speeds are not mandatory, there may be little incentive for them to slow down.”

Slower speeds also reduce the amount of fuel needed — making a voyage cheaper — and reduce the amount of carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere. “Slow speeds are a win for all,” said Leaper.

In the case of the leviathan observed in the Santa Barbara Channel, Southall and his colleagues had previously attached temporary trackers, via suction cup, to the female blue whale. The monitors were part of a study they were conducting in 2014 on the behavioral responses of whales to military sonar.

After their experiment was over, they waited around for the trackers to drop off.

“They’re expensive devices,” said Southall, noting their $20,000 price tag and the need to retrieve them.

The Times podcast: The mystery of the disappearing gray whales

Gray whales have been dying in record numbers. No one knows exactly why, but there are some clues.

They kept a safe distance from this whale, whom they had known since 1987. She had been involved in capsizing a 23-foot private vessel off the coast of Shelter Island near San Diego in 2014.

Suddenly, as they waited, they saw her shoot from the depths straight toward the cargo vessel’s trajectory.

“We watched, with our hands over our mouths, thinking, ‘Oh, my God, are we gonna see a strike? Or a pool of blood?’” Southall said.

But then she stopped, mid-swim, and rolled to her side, just a few meters below the hull — presumably to eyeball the behemoth cruising over her.

For the next three minutes, she remained suspended below, only resurfacing after the cargo ship passed.

Many cancer drugs remain unproven 5 years after accelerated approval, a study finds.

Carla K. Johnson

Associated Press

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s accelerated approval program is meant to give patients early access to promising drugs. But how often do these drugs actually improve or extend patients’ lives?

In a new study, researchers found that most cancer drugs granted accelerated approval do not demonstrate such benefits within five years.

Recommended Videos

“Five years after the initial accelerated approval, you should have a definitive answer,” said Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, a cancer specialist and bioethicist at the University of Pennsylvania who was not involved in the research. “Thousands of people are getting those drugs. That seems a mistake if we don’t know whether they work or not."

The program was created in 1992 to speed access to HIV drugs. Today, 85% of accelerated approvals go to cancer drugs.

It allows the FDA to grant early approval to drugs that show promising initial results for treating debilitating or fatal diseases. In exchange, drug companies are expected to do rigorous testing and produce better evidence before gaining full approval.

Patients get access to drugs earlier, but the tradeoff means some of the medications don’t pan out. It's up to the FDA or the drugmaker to withdraw disappointing drugs, and sometimes the FDA has decided that less definitive evidence is good enough for a full approval.

The new study found that between 2013 and 2017, there were 46 cancer drugs granted accelerated approval. Of those, 63% were converted to regular approval even though only 43% demonstrated a clinical benefit in confirmatory trials.

The research was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association and discussed at the American Association for Cancer Research annual meeting in San Diego on Sunday.

It's unclear how much cancer patients understand about drugs with accelerated approval, said study co-author Dr. Edward Cliff of Harvard Medical School.

“We raise the question: Is that uncertainty being conveyed to patients?” Cliff said.

Drugs that got accelerated approval may be the only option for patients with rare or advanced cancers, said Dr. Jennifer Litton of MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, who was not involved in the study.

It’s important for doctors to carefully explain the evidence, Litton said.

“It might be shrinking of tumor. It might be how long the tumor stays stable,” Litton said. “You can provide the data you have, but you shouldn’t overpromise.”

Congress recently updated the program, giving the FDA more authority and streamlining the process for withdrawing drugs when companies don’t meet their commitments.

The changes allow the agency “to withdraw approval for a drug approved under accelerated approval, when appropriate, more quickly,” FDA spokesperson Cherie Duvall-Jones wrote in an email. The FDA can now require that a confirmatory trial be underway when it grants preliminary approval, which speeds up the process of verifying whether a drug works, she said.
