SU_Logo.png

Gordie and Felicia Church specialise in offering their guests an intense experience of Africa's wildlife, landscapes and people. A holiday that is an unforgettable journey – on horseback, in a vehicle, on foot or from the air; witness panoramic landscapes of unrivalled beauty.  I n 1971 Tony Church (Gordie’s father), the avid pioneer, set up horseback riding and wildlife safaris across East Africa. Internationally renowned for its professionalism and extraordinary experiences, Safaris Unlimited outfits journeys of discovery and exploration into Kenya’s wild and remote places.

Explore kenya's wild and remote places on horseback, riding in kenya.

Riding in Kenya, and in particular the famous Masai Mara, is the most game-rich wilderness location on the continent.

Unfenced and home to a prolific abundance of wildlife including the wildebeest migration, large herds of giraffe and gazelle, hippos, elephant and home to the big cats; lion, cheetah and leopard.

Far from civilisation, the sense of space and freedom is overwhelming.

These areas offer great diversity in wildlife species, birdlife and scenery whilst remaining home to the Masai and Samburu people who, with their herds of livestock, are synonymous with the region

The very best safari is one that takes you closest to nature. Safaris Unlimited outfit mobile private-canvas luxury safaris.

Every second day, the entire camp is moved to a new location. In the pursuit of an intimate and exclusive experience the tents are pitched in secluded and beautiful areas, offering the ultimate privacy and total luxury.

Delicious food, the best cocktails and large comfortable furnished tents with double beds and imported linen. Steaming hot showers under the stars, big fluffy towels, warm duvets and hot water bottles are just a few of the features in camp.

The stable is home to over 25 safari horses – a mixture of Somali-Arab crossbred and thoroughbreds.

Each horse is carefully schooled, exercised and loved for the sole purpose to carry guests safely through the African wilderness. The majority have been bred and raised at home on the wildlife ranch in central Kenya.

Living at close quarters with wild animals, the horses are familiar with being amongst big game, have great endurance and are evenly tempered.

Safaris Unlimited

Tony Church pioneered Kenyan riding safaris in the 1970s and now his son Gordie heads up Safaris Unlimited, leading riders across the wildlife hotspots of the greater Mara conservancies and Laikipia Plateau.

The riding Safaris Unlimited have a string of 30 safari horses which are a mixture of Somali-Arab crossbreeds and Thoroughbreds.  Most of the horses have been raised at the Safaris Unlimited ranch in central Kenya and, having lived at close quarters with wildlife, are well used to the game encountered on safari.  Each ride is guided by Gordie who has a passion for Kenya’s wilderness and an encyclopaedic knowledge of the flora and fauna.  You should expect to ride for between four and eight hours per day, covering anywhere between 20 to 40 kilometres. The camp typically moves every other day, meaning guests have one full day in camp, followed by a full day of riding. This gives you the true sense of an African safari. Non-riders are also very welcome to join the adventure and take part in a vehicle or on foot.  Most of the safaris cater for private groups so can be designed entirely around the wishes of those in the party.  Safaris Unlimited also operate a small number of fixed departure rides which operate on set dates throughout the year.

Accommodation & Facilities Guests sleep in large safari-style tents which are erected in the beautiful and remote areas and will be ready as you arrive back from a day in the saddle.  To the front of each tent is a wash basin and just behind is a private long drop loo and a safari “bucket” shower. The tents are equipped with twin or double beds, fine linen and cosy duvets. Delicious meals are prepared every day and are eaten communally in the dining tent.

In 1971 a man called Tony Church had a bright idea… he sold his golf clubs, bought three ponies and started organising horse riding safaris across East Africa. This was the start of Safaris Unlimited, a setup which has since grown to become internationally renowned for offering professional, exciting horseback experiences all under the guidance of Tony's son, Gordie, who was born with a passion for safaris in his blood. Gordie leads each safari personally and loves to share his enthusiasm for the wilderness and his profound knowledge of the wildlife and people living in Kenya. Travelling across the open plains on a sure-footed horse is an African experience not to be missed!

These riding safaris operate in game-rich wilderness areas, far from civilisation, and offer incredible diversity in wildlife species, birdlife and scenery. These unfenced expanses of land are home to the Masai and Samburu people who herd livestock across the plains. Fossils found in East Africa indicate that hominids were living here up to three million year ago, a discovery which has earned the region its nickname as the 'The Cradle of Mankind'. The protected wildlife areas provide wonderful habitats for a variety of herbivores such as wildebeest, elephant, rhino and many others. There is also a number of endemic species such as the Reticulated Giraffe, Grevy Zebra, Lesser Kudu, Gerenuk, Black Rhino and more. There are over a thousand bird species, both resident and immigrant, making it a birdwatchers' paradise. All in all, it is a legendary safari destination!

Holly from Far and Ride had the pleasure of riding across the Mara with Gordie and his team in July 2015 and would be delighted to tell you more about it. These rides are highly recommended and should definitely be on your bucket list!

**Please note that final balance payments for this ride will need to be paid 10 weeks before departure.

safari unlimited kenya

English style riding with English GP and French cavalry saddles. Most horses wear snaffle bridles. Double-sided saddlebags are provided for water bottles, cameras and rain gear.

The horses are a mixture of Somali-Arab Crosses and Thoroughbreds which range from 14 - 17hh. Living at close quarters with wild animals, the safari horses are familiar with being amongst big game, have great endurance and are evenly tempered. Each horse is carefully loved, schooled and responsive to carry guests safely through the wilderness. There is a wide range of horses to suit each individual and every effort is made to match horse and rider. The horses are sure footed in their terrain and comfortable in their environment.

There are 3 itineraries:

  • Masai Mara Ride (8 Nights) is a trail ride
  • A Short Ride in the Mara (6 Nights) is a trail ride
  • The Lollboran Ride (6 Nights) is a trail ride

Children are accepted but must be strong, competent riders who are able to ride at all paces, trot for 10 minutes at a time and be in the saddle for long hours, as well as able to gallop out of trouble. Therefore we do not recommend these rides for children under 12.

Good health and fitness required.

Food & Accommodation

Professional chefs provide delicious, impressive meals and tasty cocktails. The dining tent is furnished with table and chairs for elegant camp meals and these include a variety of fresh fruit, vegetables, meats, fish and fowl. All of the food is locally sourced with 'full monty' breakfasts, al fresco lunches and candlelit dinners. Meals are prepared over open fires and served by waiters. Bread is baked fresh each day and there is even a safari freezer so that they can provide ice for your drinks! The 'bush bar' is stocked with imported wines and spirits as well as a choice of local beers, sodas and bottled water.

Special dietary requirements can be catered for with prior notice and every effort is made to accommodate special requests.

Accommodation

You are accommodated in traditional mobile tented camps which is typical of a safari holiday. The camp moves around every other day and you ride on to meet them again in the afternoon. This isn't your standard camping - the tents are luxurious, warm and comfortable. The camps are pitched at the most secluded and beautiful areas, chosen to fully immerse you in your surroundings whilst offering privacy. The location might be under a canopy of trees or perhaps besides a stream.

The mosquito-proof tents are large and well furnished with twin or double beds, carpets and bedside tables. Hot showers are available along with large towels, warm feather duvets, Egyptian cotton sheets and hot water bottles - after your day in the saddle you will enjoy the comfort! The separate canvas shower and loo units are placed behind each tent. Solar lights and hurricane lanterns keep camp lit and welcoming.

The camp crew take care of everything and after you're done, the camp is packed up leaving behind pristine wilderness.

Julie S., Sept. 8, 2015

'Amazing' is the best word to describe my holiday! Everything was fabulous... tents, showers, food, staff and of course the horses. Seeing all the animals so close was brilliant but I think one memory that was just wonderful was being camped right by the river with about 30 hippos. Accommodation and food was 1st class and I loved my horse, Picador. He was a lovely big boy and bold, he was wonderful. Gordie was fantastic, full of information and really great.

• January to February: Summer – dry and warm; cooler at Ngorongoro because of elevation. Migration picks up, with plenty of game throughout central/southern Serengeti.

• March: Rains become possible, bringing plains animals in search of fresh grass and food. Significant movement of antelope and other game to the plains for calving season; predators follow.

• June to October: Dry season; can be cold on the rim of Ngorongoro. Wildebeest and plains game begin migrating in search of water. By late July, wildebeest migration is in full swing, with opportunities for excellent game viewing and predator kills, especially in the Masai Mara.

• November to December: Season of the “short” rains (brief daily thunderstorms); comfortable temperatures at Ngorongoro; warm in the Serengeti, with plentiful game.

Safaris Unlimited Africa Kenya Horseback Wildlife Safaris

As a good friend once said to Gordie: “A safari journey begins with a dream and ends with an extraordinary story.” Let us plan the perfect safari for you and make this a trip of a lifetime.

quote-open3

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for the most wonderful experience of my life.  I loved and valued every moment and, in my imagination, I am still with you all in the beautiful Masai Mara, riding at blistering pace as the wildebeest stream across the plains.  I miss Kenya, the horses, the Mara and all of you.

I shall carry a small piece of Africa in my heart forever. Thank you for that and thank you for such an incredible safari.

No word of a lie: I haven’t had many happier times than being on a riding  safari  in the middle of the beautiful Masai Mara with family and friends, hosted by Gordie and Felicia Church.

Perfect horses, perfect hosts, perfect riding  safari  holiday, perfect adventure, so much wildlife …. I have yet to do anything that beats it!

Safaris   Unlimited  takes you back in time to experience the true  safari  of old where your camp crew and horses are your family traveling over 200 kms across the Masai Mara. The memories of adventure, the game and horses stay with you, but the experience of belonging strikes a deep cord in the human sole that lasts a lifetime.

Safaris   Unlimited  - simply the most magical equestrian experience in Africa riding with such a plethora of wildlife.

Having just read your Guest Book in it's entirety, I fear there is nothing left to add! Know that I am aware of all the "behind the scenes" work that goes into creating such memorable and unsurpassable experiences for so many people, year after year. Your calm demeanour and superb camp staff belie the worries, problems and issues you undoubtedly encounter on these safaris. Gordie, you, Felicia, Peter and your staff are consummate professionals - I really can't think of a single thing I would change! Most of all, your awe and love for the animals, people, culture of this land shine through you as if you, too, are visiting it like us for the first time.

Gordie & Felicia, I hoped to bring my children to experience the 'real Africa' and boy did you achieve that.  Wonderful horses, excitement and memories that we will all as a family, cherish forever.  Facing down lion, elephant, buffalo and cantering through endless herds of plains game.  Thank you for sharing it with us.

Sasaab Kenya Keith Ladzinski Niarra Travel 5

Kenya is a diverse place home to over 40 tribes. Track wildlife with a Maasai guide, join a Samburu camel train or try running with a Kalenjin.

Millions of wildebeest and zebra thunder their way to the Mara’s fresh grasses each year, stalked by lion, leopard and cheetah. One of nature’s most awe-inspiring sights, we can put you in the heart of the action.

Kenya’s pioneering model of community-led conservation and sustainable tourism ensures local people are invested in protecting ecosystems and share the benefits travel brings.

Rift Valley lakes, volanoes, mountains and deserts – the rarely explored north of Kenya is an incredible setting for an off-grid adventure.

Luxury safaris and private adventures

The home of safari.

Straddling the equator between the Rift Valley and the Indian Ocean, Kenya is a land of astounding geographical, cultural and biological diversity. Meaning ‘journey’ in Swahili, safari holidays originated right here in Kenya which is a richly rewarding place to explore.

The Maasai Mara is perhaps Kenya’s most iconic vista – savannah plains dotted with umbrella-like acacia trees and home to an incredible density of wildlife, especially so when the two million wildebeest and zebra on the great migration wheel their way onto the Mara from Tanzania. Camps in community-owned conservancies extending from the national park offer more freedom and exclusivity for your safari while directly supporting sustainable livelihoods for the Maasai people here.

Follow the frontier southeast to see Amboseli’s elephant herds backed by the white peak of Kilimanjaro, then wander Chyulu’s green hills and forests. North of Nairobi, in the shadow of Mount Kenya, the plains of Laikipia were once dominated by cattle ranches. Now, many are devoted to conservation and the region is once again a haven for endangered species, especially rhinos, African wild dogs and giraffes. Lodges here include some of Africa’s most exclusive, offering an adventurous experience about so much more than game drives.

As you head further north, the landscape turns khaki and arider. Samburu county, home to the Samburu people, is a rugged but beautiful place where you can learn about their culture and visit inspiring community-led conservation projects. Beyond this, the Rift Valley’s saline lakes, deserts and volcanic wilds are best explored by helicopter.

Flooding Inundates Kenya, Killing at Least 32 and Displacing Thousands

Heavy rains also pounded other nations in East Africa, including Tanzania, where at least 155 people were killed, according to the country’s prime minister.

Days of torrential rains have pummeled parts of Kenya, leaving at least 32 dead, 15 injured and more than 40,000 people displaced, according to officials. The flooding has killed nearly 1,000 farm animals and destroyed thousands of acres of crops, with more rain expected across the country in the coming days.

The rains began in March during what is known in the country as the “long rains,” but intensified over the past week, according to the Kenya Meteorological Department .

Heavy rains have also pounded other nations across East Africa. In Tanzania, at least 155 people were killed and 236 others injured from the relentless rain that has swept several parts of the country in recent days, Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa said on Thursday.

The rains affected some 200,000 people, Mr. Majaliwa added, and caused damage to farms, bridges, roads, schools and places of worship. The Tanzania Meteorological Authority warned that heavy rains and strong winds would continue to pummel several towns and cities, including the port city of Dar es Salaam.

In Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, where some of the country’s heaviest rain has fallen, more than 30,000 people have been displaced, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs . On Tuesday, 18 people there were stranded and later rescued, including seven children, the Kenya Red Cross Society said.

Edwin Sifuna, the Nairobi County senator, said on social media that the local government there was “clearly overwhelmed,” and he called on the federal government for help.

“The situation in Nairobi has escalated to extreme levels,” he wrote in a post that included a video of people stranded on rooftops surrounded by floodwaters.

Kithure Kindiki, cabinet secretary for the Interior Ministry, said in a social media post on Thursday that several government agencies were beginning a joint operation to assist the victims, conduct rescues and evacuate those who remain at risk.

The heavy rains on Wednesday forced Kenya Railways to suspend commuter train services. The Kenya Urban Roads Authority also partially closed four major roads in Nairobi and warned of heavy flooding along several major highways in the capital and in the coastal city of Mombasa.

The rains were not expected to subside over the next few days, according to the Kenya Meteorological Department, which had rain in the forecast for parts of the country, including Nairobi, through Monday. The agency also warned of a high likelihood of breakouts of diseases such as malaria and diarrhea in some areas.

The latest downpours come just months after torrential rains and floods killed dozens of people and displaced thousands more nationwide.

Here are photographs of the flooding in Kenya:

A flooded river in Mathare, a sprawling shantytown in Nairobi where many live in tin shacks.

Swimming through floodwaters to try to rescue people stranded in their homes in Mathare. Most of those displaced in Nairobi live in informal settlements, according to the United Nations.

Residents of Mathare tried to salvage goods from their homes. Many people in Nairobi live in high-density areas that lack proper roads, water or power infrastructure.

Residents in Mathare trying to clear muddy water from their homes. Missing or blocked drainage systems have been blamed for exacerbating the floods.

Clinging to buses and trucks to avoid flooded roads in Nairobi.

Homes in several neighborhoods across the capital were submerged, leading to evacuations.

The torrential rains affected almost half of Kenya’s 47 counties, according to the United Nations.

Using a boat to traverse floodwaters in the Githurai area of Nairobi.

Flooding inundated entire roadways in Machakos County, about 35 miles southeast of Nairobi.

The swollen Athi River. The river burst its banks and flooded homes in Machakos County, officials said.
