Also known as the Mulawin Falls, this extraordinary natural wonder is like a big limestone terrace filled with crystal clear waters cascading down the mountain. Intrigued by its mesmerizing beauty, tourists from different parts of the world are now flocking to the province of Abra just to visit this breathtaking attraction. Well, you can’t blame the people because it wasn’t until 2015 when Kaparkan Falls was discovered thanks to a group of hikers exploring the lush jungles of Abra.

This is the perfect time of the year because the natural limestone pools are surely filled with crystal clear waters. 3. Sapilang Falls
Located in Barangay Sagap, Abra is another sought-after waterfall attraction in the province. Sapilang Falls, more popularly known as the Sapilang Twin Falls. The first waterfall can be described to have tall, thin, and multi-layered cascades while the second one can be characterized to be having a broad and bare-faced rock formation.
Photo from PH Travel Destinations
Both are definitely gorgeous-looking but only one can be hiked and trekked by visitors, which is the latter. Sapilang Falls is indeed a haven for outdoor lovers because there are lots of challenging trails and hikes before you can even reach the sparkling paradise. After lots of explorations and adventures into the natural wonders of Abra, it’s now time to immerse ourselves in the province’s rich and colorful culture! One of the best ways to do this is by visiting the mind-blowing masterpieces of Teofilo Garcia, which are popularly known as Tabungaw Gourd Hats. These are unique-looking traditional hats that are said to be both weather-resistant and attractive as well.
Met him during my last visit in Abra. 😉
It’s however important to note that Tabungaw Gourd Hats are seasonal creations because Tabungaw seeds will only spring out during the months of June and July. Because of Teofilo Garcia’s growing popularity, most of his creations are now sought by hat collectors from different parts of the world! Well, that’s actually not a surprise given that Teofilo Garcia was given the National Living Artist Award in 2012.
9. Abel Loom Weaving in La Paz
Next up, another wonderful opportunity to dive deeper into the rich culture of Abra is by knowing more about Abel Loom Weaving in La Paz, Abra. This 120-meter spectacle is also known as Tagpao Falls, which can be related to the local term Tagpao, meaning a female’s pubic area.
The reason why it’s named like this is that it is said that the waterfalls look like the upper part of a female’s pubic area when inverted. Anyhow, witnessing the enchanting beauty of Tagpew Falls with your own eyes during your visit to Abra truly is an unforgettable experience! It involves a lot of hiking and trekking through difficult trails in the forest but after seeing the mind-blowing cascades of Tagpew Falls flowing through amazing rock formations, you’ll eventually feel that it was all worth it.
11. Abualan Cave
Another must-visit natural landmark in Abra that absolutely calls for an exciting adventure is the Abualan Cave. It is one of the most organic locations to enjoy a firsthand experience of nature’s undeniable beauty. Also regarded sometimes as Guano Cave because of the presence of bat poop due to numerous bat dwellers inside, the cave serves as a reminder that nature is indeed full of surprises and unexplored gems.
Inside the cave, you’ll find gigantic rock formations and incredible stalactites and stalagmites scattered in different areas. Once you pass through Abualan Cave’s narrow entrance, you’ll feel like you’re now entering a whole new world, far from all the things we’re used to. And that, my friends, is one of the most amazing reasons why traveling and exploring the world is my passion.

The Libtec Crystal Cave, located in Dolores, Abra, is one of the most popular spelunking and trekking spots in the province. Also known as the Quiling Crystal Cave, this cave is a wonderful haven for bats and lots of mineral deposits. It’s the reason why it was regarded as a crystal cave, after all.
Inside the cave, you’ll discover hidden chambers, incredible stalactites and stalagmites, flowstones, and of course the native bats called kurarapnit. Unfortunately, these poor creatures became victims of overhunting. So when you’re lucky enough to spot some, do your part and don’t hurt them in any way, alright?

Location : Tubo, Abra, Philippines . Save on Google Maps .
Kili Falls is one of many beautiful places in Abra that you can visit all year round. The main attraction here is not just the waterfall. Hidden behind the main cascade is a hot spring that flows into an icy-cold river. The locals had made a wading pool beside it. The temperature is perfectly warm for a dip! Most times of the year, you can have this relaxing spot all to yourself. Kili Village does not attract a lot of tourists because of its remote location in the hinterlands of Tubo, the southernmost town of Abra. The trail to the waterfall from the village crosses scenic rice fields and a few hanging bridges similar to what you would find in Banaue, Ifugao, Benguet or Mountain Province.
How to go :
Brgy. Kili in Tubo is a 3 to 4-hour drive south of Bangued, the capital town of Abra. The passenger jeepney departs from “Tubo House” in Bangued in the morning, at around 8am. There is no fixed schedule and daily jeepney trips are not guaranteed. If there are no jeepney trips on the day of your visit, you have the option to charter a car or motorcycle that can take you to Kili. From Kili village, the waterfall and hot spring is an easy 20-minute walk away.

Hi! is it better to have a private vehicle going there instead of commute? Planning to go there this November 2017
November 17, 2017 at 10:16 pm
You can go to Bangued easily by private vehicle, but the roads to remote places in Abra is very terrible. If your car is not fit for it, I suggest that you charter transport in Bangued.
You can seek advice from the tourism office under the Office of the Congressman, Lone District of Abra. Their office is inside the DPWH Compound, Bangued.

However, Kaparkan Falls should only be visited during the rainy season from July to September since the water flows will be constant. Visiting this spot is not recommended during dry seasons because the waters will be muddy. Kaparkan Falls is locally recognized as Mulawin Falls.
See the Apao Rolling Hills
The Apao Rolling Hills are Abra’s most majestic hills. The hills provide a panoramic view of the entire scenery. One of the things you will immediately notice in the hills is the wave-like pattern. These hills have a consistent color of brown land and green grass.
The Apao Rolling Hills has become so attractive that tourists must register in the Municipal Hall for a visit and get local tourism officials’ advice. You must be mindful of not littering to conserve the hills’ natural beauty during your stay.
Swim at Pinsal Falls
Pinsal Falls is a body of water produced by another tourist spot, Tugot ni Angalo. Tugot ni Angelo represents a historical belief in the minds of Abra’s locals. Tugot ni Angalo is footprints around Abra by a giant named Angalo. In Abra’s view, Angalo was the first human.
According to the local myth, the footprints are products of Angalo’s search for his woman named Aran. He drank water and occasionally rested during his search, which resulted in the giant footprints. As of now, some of the giant footprints have given birth to new tourist spots. One of these is Pinsa Falls, located in one of the footprints.
Take Pictures at the Piwek Rock Formation
The Piwek Rock Formations provide some of the most picture-worthy spots in Abra. Given that you are headed onto a rocky area, expect the journey to be arduous. Some of the obstacles you will encounter are crossing the Binongan River and climbing huge boulders for approximately half-hour.
The best spot to take pictures is the white limestone area, with peaks and valleys. After climbing boulders, you can go to the cliff jump area to dive towards the calm blue waters. Since your journey requires tremendous physical activity, do not forget to bring climbing and swimming gear.
Take a day trip to Bangued.
Bangued is the capital city of Abra Province. This city serves as the perfect spot to visit historical museums and parks. You can visit Bangued’s Cassamata Hill National Park to view Abra’s natural wonders.
The park has a section called Victoria Park, where you can admire the province’s plains, mountains, and rivers. This city also serves as a special place for Catholics because of its unique heritage sites, such as the San Lorenzo Ruiz Shrine.
Cross the Don Mariano Marcos Bridge
The Don Mariano Marcos Bridge is one of the best places to get a scenic view of Abra’s natural gifts. This bridge is also the third-longest of its kind in history, measuring 889 meters.
Some of Abra’s natural wonders are mountains and riverbanks, such as the Abra River. The Don Mariano Marcos Bridge is also an excellent way to reach some of Abra’s local towns. Some nearby towns are Dolores, Tayum, Tineg, and Lagangilang.
Visit Tayum Church
Tayum Church is locally known as the Santa Catalina de Alejandria Parish Church. Augustinians created this church in the 19th century and dedicated this monument to commemorate Saint Catherine of Alexandria. Tayum Church has a baroque structure that carries a cultural significance to locals.
This church also has burnay jar motifs. Burnay jars have been familiar to locals ever since the 1500s due to Spanish influence. Later on, the church was recognized as a National Cultural Treasure by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts.
Explore Sibud-Sibud Cave
Sibud-Sibud Cave is a must-visit for cave enthusiasts and beginners as well. The cave has plenty of mineral deposits, chambers, and caverns. Trekking in this cave isn’t difficult because there won’t be much climbing during your journey.
You can also notice multiple mineral deposit formations, such as in the shape of a heart, banana blossom, and golden walls. Also, Sibud-Sibud Cave was placed under the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Protection. This means the cave can be utilized for economic activities such as gathering bird nests.
Visit the Gabriela Silang Gallery of Fine Arts
The Gabriela Silang Gallery of Fine Arts provides a glimpse of Filipino history, especially during colonial times when Spaniards ruled the Philippines. The gallery is in a house formerly the refuge home of one of the country’s national heroes, Gabriela Silang.
This house is where Gabriela Silang hid when his husband, Diego Silang, betrayed his friends and was slain by the Spaniards. This gallery contains books and authentic art pieces made by famous Filipino and foreign artists such as Pablo Picasso, Juan Luna, and Fernando Amorsolo. Some of the other relics are furniture, ceramics, and chinaware.
Buy Gourd Hats in San Quintin
If you are looking for something that helps you withstand the weather’s sunlight and storm, you should buy the province’s locally made gourd hats. Gourd hats are weatherproof equipment that is part of Abra’s local culture. Gourd Hats were commonly used during times of civil unrest in Abra.
These hats are sold by Teofilo Garcia , who happens to be a National Living Treasure Awardee. However, he is the only maker left of gourd hats, as the public can access mainstream hats. As a result, there is a strong chance that Teofilo’s hats will soon become the last of their kind.
See Abel Loom Weaving in La Paz
Abel Loom Weaving is a practice central to Abra Province’s culture. La Paz is known for traditional loom weaving, a fabric known as Abel. The tradition of loom weaving is important because such art has been passed among women from generation to generation.
Loom weaving originated from the indigenous Image Tribe. To participate in loom weaving, you can visit Leila’s Loom, which happens to be one of the largest producers of Abel. You will have the opportunity to experience the process of loom weaving and buy finished products.
Swim in Lusuac Springs
Lusuac Springs offers the perfect family fun, especially for swimmers. Lusuac Springs is a picnic resort with all you need, such as spring water, water slides, and cottages for your convenience.
The spring water is refreshing to the point that it is potable and safe for human consumption. You can also get a foot spa massage from fish as you dip your feet in a pool’s shallow part.
St James the Elder Cathedral
St. James, the Elder Cathedral, is one of the most historical places in Abra. The church took approximately 80 years to finish as construction began in the 18th century and ended during the 19th century.
During World War II, it also faced destruction as the church was bombed by Americans. Later on, reconstruction was completed in the 20th century with the help of American Aid. As of now, it has become a cathedral with a unique architectural design with an off-white color.

Lechon de Abra
Lechon is one of those cuisines authentic to Filipinos. A whole pig is roasted by inserting a massive stick on it, then rotated over burning charcoal.

The process of making patupat is labor-intensive and time-consuming. First, the glutinous rice is soaked in water overnight to soften it. Then, it is drained and mixed with sugar and grated coconut. The mixture is placed inside woven coconut leaves and tied securely to form a cylindrical shape. The bundles are then boiled in water for several hours until the rice is fully cooked and the leaves have softened.
The resulting patupat is a sticky, sweet rice cake with a subtle coconut flavor. It has a chewy texture and is often enjoyed with freshly grated coconut or sugar. Some people also want it with a sprinkle of salt or coconut milk.
Dinengdeng is a vegetable stew prepared with an assortment of local vegetables, fish, and bagoong or fermented fish paste.
The dish is versatile and can be made with various vegetables, depending on the season. Common vegetables used in dinengdeng include okra, eggplant, squash, bitter gourd, string beans, and malunggay leaves.
The vegetables are first sautéed in garlic and onions until slightly softened. The fish, bagoong, and water are added and left to simmer until the vegetables are fully cooked, and the broth has thickened.
Dinengdeng is known for its distinct and savory flavor, which comes from the bagoong or fermented fish paste. The paste adds a salty and slightly sour taste to the dish, which pairs well with the sweetness of the vegetables. For some variations of dinengdeng, add sliced tomatoes, ginger, or calamansi juice for added flavor.

BEST ATTRACTIONS IN ABRA
Sinmimbaan Grove is a tourist destination located in Dolores’ Barangay Libtec. Sinmimbaan’s name derives from its massive walls, which resemble those of an ancient church. A cool creek inside invites guests to swim.
Kaparkan Falls is a relatively new tourist attraction. The falls in Abra come to life during the rainy season, which lasts from August to September. During the dry season, the limestone terraces are deserted. Kaparkan Falls is regulated by the local government. Visitors must arrive in groups because the falls can only accommodate 100 people at a time. Each batch is limited to three hours, so make the most of your time at this natural wonder.
This is not your typical waterfall because it has a strong stream. At the pool’s entrance, rock formations protrude from the water, slowing the current on its way out to the river. The splash of falling water usually gets one side of the large open dome-like enclosure. Its water is refreshing and cool. Basakal Falls is about an hour’s walk from Barangay Ableg’s houses. To get to Basakal Falls, hike through rice terraces and along the irrigation canal wall. View the Labo Falls on your way to Basakal Falls. Swim, rock climb, and enjoy the view.
A panoramic view of the wave-like hills, with no large trees but only plain brown and green grasses, provides a relaxing atmosphere for visitors seeking cool and fresh air during the rainy season. The sea of clouds can also be seen in the early morning. Apao paradise hills is approximately an hour and a half drive from Bangued, the provincial capital. Before arriving at this location, you will travel through Tayum and the Don Mariano Marcos Bridge in Dolores and San Juan.
A hot spring hidden behind the main cascade flows into an icy-cold river. The weather is ideal for a swim. Because of its remote location on the outskirts of Tubo, Abra’s southernmost town, this destination does not attract many tourists. The trail from the village to the waterfall passes through scenic rice fields and a few hanging bridges similar to those found in Banaue, Ifugao , Benguet , or Mountain Province .
Boni Falls is only a short distance from Poblacion. This natural wonder is best visited during the rainy season.
Tata Pilo, an expert artisan from Abra, Philippines , was awarded the Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan or National Living Treasure by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts for his dedication to the traditional craft of making gourd, locally known as kattukong or tabungaw hat weaving. Tata Pilo’s dedication to this craft elevated Abra’s culture and heritage.
Tayum Church is a 19th-century Baroque church in the town of Tayum, Abra, Philippines . The Roman Catholic Diocese of Bangued has jurisdiction over the parish church, which is patronized by Saint Catherine of Alexandria. The National Museum of the Philippines designated the church as a National Cultural Treasure in 2001.

Kaparkan Falls: The Majestic Water Terraces of Abra
The Philippines is blessed with a number of beautiful waterfalls , but nothing can compete with Kaparkan Falls in Abra. I’d been here twice and I was still amazed the second time! Here’s my experience and travel guide to Kaparkan Falls in Abra.
Kaparkan Falls is also known as Mulawin Falls . Locals already know about its existence for years, but it was only in August 2015 that it was “discovered” by an outsider. It has since been part of Abra’s top tourist attractions.
Kaparkan Falls measures approximately 1000 meter high. It’s literally a high-terraced waterfall, filled with a number of small basins. The water in Kaparkan Falls eventually drains down to Tineg River.

Via monster jeep or truck, via trekking, when is the best time to visit kaparkan falls, 1 day itinerary to kaparkan falls, other places to see, where to stay in abra, things to bring in your trip, kaparkan falls travel tips, diy tour to kaparkan falls, packaged tours to kaparkan falls, what to read next:.
My first trip to Kaparkan Falls was back in 2017 and then again in 2019, when JV of Gala PH invited me to be tour coordinator for one of their groups.
From Manila, it takes 8-9 hours to reach Abra. The registration is located in Bangued, but the actual location of Kaparkan Falls is Tineg, another municipality a few hours away.
In the registration site, tourists are required to submit requirements (registration and waiver form) and then attend a short orientation. These are the important points of the orientation:
- Kaparkan Falls is relatively undeveloped, and the road going there is difficult
- The monster jeep/truck may get broken down on the way.
- You need to be sure you know what you’re getting into.
My first trip to the falls was grueling and this is the reason I didn’t write about it immediately. I didn’t think it would be safe to promote it at that time. However, in my last trip, I noticed that the roads had improved, with a long stretch of rough road now cemented and easy to pass by. However, the majority of the route going up to the falls is still dirt road and it’s not confirmed whether the local government plans to create an accessible road all the way to Kaparkan Falls.
It isn’t my first time to ride a monster jeep or truck, but I can imagine that it’s a novelty for those who haven’t tried it yet. In my last trip, I sat beside the driver — I believe this is the most comfortable seat, since it feels less bumpy on rough roads.
The first hour ride from the town center was smooth enough — the route passed by several barangays, towards a pastoral hillside with huge boulders.
From here on, the road stops. We stopped for a while so the driver and his companions could secure chains to the tires, so the vehicle can safely maneuver through rough mountain roads. Then it was 1 hours of bumpy, uncomfortable ride. I liked to compare this to a theme park ride, except it seems never ending. On occasions, the vehicle tipped sideways as it made its way across rocky routes.
I find that it’s normal to scream — out of fear or surprise. At one point I even prayed that we’d get there safely. Periodically I’d also laugh with the rest of the group, in adventurous spirit or nervousness.
The monster jeep/struck stopped at the jump-off point.. From there, it’s only about 15-20 minutes of easy trekking down Kaparkan Falls.
Once you set your sight on Kaparkan Falls, you’ll know that it’s worth the trip.
It’s a majestic sight to behold — layers and layers of white limestone terraces, filled with basins of water to bathe on. The waterfall stretches down to the river below that it’s impossible to capture it in a single frame.
On days with good rain, the basins brim with emerald-green water. On drier days, the water is either clear or muddy. This is one of the reasons why Kaparkan Falls is best visited during the first onslaught of the typhoon season.
Regardless, Kaparkan Falls is beautiful.
In my first trip here, I stayed at the pools beside the entrance to the falls. In my second trip, I went with the group to see more lagoons at the bottom. The trek was just 10-15 minutes, but it wasn’t easy. We had to climb down limestones with running water. Imagine a set of stairs, but with running water in it. It felt amazing to experience that.
At the bottom of the terraces, there are three aqua-blue lagoons. I was happy to finally see these — I missed them the first time because I skipped the trek down. It’s a good place to swim and take photos.
Further down is the Tineg River. Unfortunately, it’s not allowed to swim in the river since it’s dangerous.
For 3 hours, I bathed in pools, took pictures, and climbed down the terraces.
Kaparkan Falls is one of the most unique waterfalls in the Philippines. Despite the challenging routes, it’s worth going here. The limestone terraces are out of this world, and in my opinion its remoteness only adds to its pristine beauty. I can’t help but compare it to other better-known falls such as Kawasan Falls in Cebu or Tinago Falls in Iligan — both beautiful but whose immediate vicinity is filled with market stalls and tables for tourists.
Interestingly, Kaparkan Falls also holds mystique. When I first went here, an acquaintance and I were taking photos when we noticed a guy by one of the pools at the camera screen. We looked at the spot but there was no one there. We checked the camera screen again, and there he was! I couldn’t remember our reaction at that time — I think we were speechless. I told this to other travelers and I’ve heard similar experiences — a certain presence felt. Someone told me there’s a guardian at Kaparkan Falls.
Overall, visiting Kaparkan Falls is a memorable experience.
How to get to Kaparkan Falls
Kaparkan Falls can be found at Sitio Kaparkan, Barangay Caganayan, Tineg, Abra.
- From Cubao, ride a bus (Partas or Dominion) going to Bangued, Abra (8 hours, about P730).
- Once you arrive at the bus terminal, take a tricycle to the place of orientation (either at DWPH headquarters or Farinas restaurant).
There you will need to complete a registration form and waiver. You also need to attend a short orientation about Kaparkan Falls.
After registration, you can either ride a monster jeep or truck or trek to the falls.
This is the easiest way to get to Kaparkan Falls. From the town, ride a monster jeep or truck to the jump-off point.
( Updated 2023 ) The ride takes a little over 2 hours, including 1.5 hours on cemented road and 45 minutes on a rough mountain trail. From the jump-off point, you need to trek for 15-20 minutes to Kaparkan Falls.
As an alternative to the monster jeep/truck, it is possible to trek to Kaparkan Falls! Trekking time is about 2-3 hours.
Kaparkan Falls is only open for visitation during the rainy season. This starts from June/July up to October/November depending on the duration of the rainy season.
The best months to visit are July and September because the constant rains fuel up the streams. If it’s still open in November, expect it to be relatively drier.
For the rest of the year, Kaparkan Falls is closed since the waterfall is dried up.
Here’s a sample 1 day itinerary to Kaparkan Falls, Abra.
Personally, I suggest staying overnight in Abra. Getting from Manila to Bangued and then going to Kaparkan Falls can be very tiring. With a 2-day trip, you can visit side trips on your way back.
If you still have hours to spare, you may explore the various municipalities in Abra. Here are the notable places to see:
- Bangued : Abra Provincial Capitol, San Lorenzo Ruiz Shrine, Victoria Peak at Casamata Hill (Abra signage), St. James the Elder/Bangued Cathedral, Acosta Pansiteria (where you can taste Abra’s famous miki)
- Tayum : Gabriela Silang Gallery of Fine Arts, St. Catherine Cathedral, Don Mariano Bridge
- San Quentin : Tangadan Tunnel, pasalubong center
- Bucay : Layugan Gardens (10,000 tulips)
If you’re going to stay 2 days in Abra, you may also visit other attractions such as: Barusibis Falls, Lusuac Spring and Lobot Eco-Park. Alternatively, you may do your side trips in Ilocos where you can visit Pinsal Falls in Sta. Maria or Vigan.
If you’re going on an overnight trip to Abra, here are the best places to stay:
- Oval Era Hostel (Bangued)
- Abra Valley Grand Hotel (Bangued)
- Strutz Art Garden Resort (Bangued)
If you’re going to stay in Vigan (Ilocos) instead, you may search here for discounted rates of hotels in Ilocos Sur .
Here are the things you should bring on your visit to Kaparkan Falls:
- Reusable bottled water
- Dry bag for gadgets
- Insect repellent
- Change of clothes
Take note that small bottled waters are not allowed. It’s best to bring a reusable water bottle since there is a water source you can use for refills in Kaparkan Falls.
Here are some things you have to know:
- The carrying capacity of the waterfall is 100 pax. Each batch is given 3 hours to enjoy the falls. If you arrive late in Bangued, you might be queued to the next batch so I suggest getting there as early as possible.
- Wash-up area can be found in DPWH or other nearby establishments in the town proper.
Here are my personal tips:
- You may ride a monster truck or jeep. If the latter, there are seats available in the topload section. I suggest not going topload as it’s uncomfortable and you may be subjected to extreme weather (heat or rain).
- Wear durable shoes or sandals. The limestones in the waterfall are not slippery, but if you’ll have to step on running water which can easily break a flimsy pair of sandals.
Budget and expenses
Here’s a summary of rates ( Updated as of September 2019 ):
- RT fare for 4×4 monster jeep/truck: P1000 per person
- (If you choose to trek) Guide fee: P1000 for 1-4 pax
The whole budget depends on whether you’re going on a DIY or packaged tour.
If you’re in a group, you might want to do a DIY trip. If so, take note that you will have to secure your own slot for visiting Kaparkan Falls via tourism office. If you decide to take the monster jeep/truck, reserve a slot with Abramazing Tours .
Here are some reminders:
- Walk-ins will not be entertained.
- It’s best to reserve months prior to your planned schedule as slots tend to fill up.
For DIY tour, an estimated budget for a 1-day itinerary is P3000 per person.
I recommend getting a packaged tour for ease and convenience.
A packaged tour usually includes Manila-Abra transfer, meals, transfer from Abra town proper to Kaparkan Falls, accommodation (for overnight trips), and miscellaneous fees. Food is usually excluded.
For joiner/exclusive tours, I recommend booking your tour with Gala PH .

Hi Katherine,
This is very informative. We are planning to go there this weekend by motorcycle and thanks to your blog nalaman ko na di pala basta basta ang pagpunta. How can we reserve a slot?
Katherine Cortes
As indicated in the post, contact the tourism and Abramazing. I’m pretty sure sarado na siya this month but there are other places in Abra you can check out.
Can we use your experience in Kaparkan for a Filipino community volunteer-magazine here in Tokyo?

Hi there your blog is so useful but I have a question regarding to this
“From there, you’ll need to register and then ride a 4×4 monster jeep to Kaparkan Falls (5 hours, P850). From the jump-off point, you need to trek for 15-20 minutes to Kaparkan Falls”
Php850 fare to jeep is per head??? Is there a ration or capacity for the jeep and how much yung isang jeep???
Yes per head. Round-trip na yun. If namamahalan kayo pwede naman kayo magtrek na lang.
Not sure abt the capacity of the jeep.
Is it possible to use your write up on your experience in Kaparkan sa isang local Filipino community volunteer-magazine dito sa Tokyo? It is a souvenir magazine siya na pinapamigay sa mga volunteers ng NPO Philippine Festival.
It’ll be a great help to our kababayans na malaman about it. Hoping for your positive response, Katherine.
Best regards,
Alden [email protected]

🇵🇭 ABRA • Best 137 Tourist Spots, Attractions, Interesting Sites and Destinations
In 2010, only a few tourist destinations are known in Abra and I started this project to unveil the beauty of its towns by documenting as many destinations as possible that I could cover. I published my discoveries here on my blog for the world to see. ✈ The province of Abra has twenty-seven (27) towns. As of this writing, I've explored twenty-five (25) of its towns in varying degree. ✈ In 2013, I was offered to conceptualize and be part of a government-backed coffee table book project featuring the potential tourist attractions and wonders in the province, hence, I was able to cover more places I never imagined. I don't know, but I somehow feel proud I have set foot and been to some of the places on this list. Can we like, spend a week just motor-biking in ALL the sights here? Hahaha! Crazy Ideaaaaaaaaa! It is a beautiful place! :-D I love to visit those old homes and the old capitol. Nostalgic. Blessed ang Abra sa mga natural wonders. Keep it up Edmar, I'm backing you 100%! Heck, I think I could write lots of poems just sitting beside every river on this list! --Pondering
Paula O | Actually, I haven't seen much of Abra (Yes, there are mooooooore hidden destinations I've yet to see). But I think this list is already enough to start promoting the province :)

Hey Mr Guquib, how long by motorbike vigan to laoag?
Pondering Paodaolei | Around 1 to 1.5 hour at a speed of 60-80 kph
Abra is one of the underrated province of the country in tourism. This is a good eye-opener for the province.
Ian | Going Places | ...couldn't agree more bro, some people should move on from the wrong notion :)
This excites me to visit Abra soon since it's just in mainland Luzon.
Turista Trails | Please do visit Karl, this province deserves a hype :)
Thank you Sir for promoting the province of Abra. I am glad that you have experience the beauty of our province. Once again Thank you for that.
Ma. Avena Astudillo | Sorry it took me a while to reply. You're welcome! Thanks for the appreciation.
You inspire me to travel more too without spending much, Edmar. More so, You don't only help travelers to be informed about these places you've been to, but you also basically project the goodness of each place. God bless all your future travels and adventure. I pray, I could join you soon.
Unknown | Cheers! Happy travels mate! Hope to meet you on the road someday. :)
Hi Edmar, this is very informative. Thank you. Question please, how many days will it take me to reach at least 20 destinations you've presented here?
| Adam Christopher Maraya | ► Hi there Adam! I'm finding it hard to answer your question really. That would depend on the destination you want to visit. If you'll go far in the mountains of Abra like for example Kaparkan Falls in Tineg or the Kili Falls in Tubo, you need one day for each destination. In my case, I've climbed 7 mountains + 3 waterfalls in Abra for 5 days (including travel time to and from Bangued). I've also done 9 mountains in 3 days. It also depends on your destination of choice. But if you want to visit all the destinations I posted here, maybe you could do it in AT LEAST 20 days without rest days. Take note that some of the places require non-stop hikes/treks. I hope this reply helped you. Cheers and happy travel!
Nah hire ka po ba guide? Id yrs,how much po ang cost? At ang po ang best hostel s abra? Thanks in advance s reply :-)
| Maricel Barrios | ► Hi there Maricel! I cannot quote an amount here because it's a case to case basis. Abra is very wide and it has various destinations to choose from. About sa hostel, I couldn't recommend for now 'cause I forgot the name of that hostel where I stayed. Haha! But you can inquire for hotels and other tourism-related stuff about Abra at the office of Congressman JB Bernos located at DPWH COMPOUND in Bangued (whenever you're in Abra). There is a tourist assistance desk there. I hope this helps. Happy town exploring!

Best Tourist Attractions in Abra, Philippines
- December 16, 2022
In spite of the fact that Abra has been renowned for its scenic and mountain landscapes for many years, there are still many people who haven’t discovered this hidden gem. In this province, My hope is that more people will discover this underrated region of the world and explore its many beautiful tourist destinations and begin planning their own adventures there.
Visit Abra’s beautiful places
Kili falls & hot spring.
The main attraction of Kili Falls is not just the waterfall, but the hot spring that flows from behind the main cascade into an icy-cold river in Abra which is one of many beautiful places you can visit all year round. This falls is not the lone attraction here but also one of the best tourist attractions in Abra. The locals constructed a wading pool beside it, and the temperature is perfect for dipping. This place is often all to yourself at the most relaxing time of the year.
Kaparkan Falls
Abra’s waterfall is one of the best reasons to visit it. Not because of its size, but because of its extraordinary appearance. Kaparkan Falls is unique among most waterfalls in the Philippines and one of the best tourist attractions in Abra. Unlike most waterfalls in the Philippines, which are formed by roaring cascades, it features multiple terraces that gently cascade from the forest floor.
[adToAppearHere]
Piwek Rock Formation
Piwek Rock Formation is one of the best tourist attractions in Abra. Getting to this location is quite a challenge. However, the view it provides is simply beyond words. Biyahe ni Drew once featured this as one of the tourist areas in Abra. The Piwek Rock Formations are another cluster of white rock and boulders along the river, similar to the Tinipak River in Rizal. In addition to the turquoise and clear water of the river making this even more appealing to visit, these rock formations are becoming a popular jumping spot as well. There are several high points in this place, the highest of which is about 11 meters high. Locals enjoy jumping off this point. And many tourists have already tried it out.
Abualan Cave
The narrow entrance may seem like a normal cave entrance, but there are actually a lot of rooms and columns inside, and there are many stalactites and stalagmite rock formations that you will find here as well. In some ways, it is similar to Longog cave that can be found in Kapangan, Benguet. During World War II, it was a safe haven for residents of the town. Furthermore, it is sometimes referred to as Guano cave because of the presence of bat pooping. Yes, there are quite a few bats that inhabit here. The cave is currently one of the emerging tourist attractions in the province of Abra. However, it remains largely undeveloped and the local authorities should take steps to develop the cave in a sustainable way so that it will help bolster community development.
Gabriela Carino-Silang Gallery of Fine Arts
A visit to the former headquarters of Gabriela Silang is also worthwhile in Tayum. She is widely known as the Joan of Arc of Ilocandia for leading the Philippine independence movement. The Gallery is considered as one of the best tourist attractions in Abra. Located within the compound of the Gabriel Silang compound is a privately owned museum that houses the collections of retired Philippine Ambassador Rosario V. Carino, known as Gabriela Silang Gallery of Fine Arts. A former ambassador’s gallery is filled with sculptures, documents, paintings, artifacts, books, furniture and documents from all over the world he collected during his career. A few of the most prized pieces include Juan Luna, Fernando Amorsolo, Pablo Picasso, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Domenico Ghirlandaioto, and others.
Sapilang Falls
It is a multilayered waterfall that has numerous natural pools within each layer. Sapilang Falls is one of the largest waterfalls in the world and also one of the best tourist attractions in Abra. The highest part has the grandest waterfall. Sapilang Falls greets and welcomes everyone to the rustic realm of the fall. It will take you 30 minutes to get here from barangay Sagap, crossing through forested trails for about 30 minutes. Also note that you will also have to cross a river, so be prepared for a little dampness.
Despite the fact that the falls cascade from one spot to another, they are not all identical. The first fall that one sees is tall and thin, and has a variety of layers. The second fall, on the other hand, is surrounded by a broad and bare rock face and is easily climbed. This waterfall has a waterfall extension that cannot be seen from below. When arriving in Sagap, one needs to register at the barangay captain’s house.
Tabungaw Hat Maker (Teofilo Garcia)
A National Living Treasure Awardee, Teofilo Garcia makes gourd-based hats called kattokong nga tabungaw, or kattokong nga upo. Tabungaw, the vegetable from which they are derived, is the hat Garcia’s people in Northern Luzon wear for graduations. Ilocano children wear them. During the Spanish Inquisition, revolutionaries wore their brims to fight against the Spanish. Farmers sheltered under them while plowing fields.
In order to make his all-weather headgear, he grows and harvests native gourds himself, hollows them out, dries them, and inserts finely woven rattan mats before varnishing the top in bright orange or red. In his village, he may be the last tabungaw hat maker left in the Philippines. He is currently teaching his craft to local youth. He welcomes visitors to his workshop and encourages them to purchase a hat in support of tabungaw-making traditions.
Tangadan Tunnel
In the municipality of San Quintin, Province of Abra, Philippines, the 40 meter Tangadan Tunnel is a popular landmark as part of a road connecting Abra with Ilocos Sur. As a symbol of Abrenian defiance and hardiness, the ‘Usok’ in Tangadan is more than a welcome tunnel.
The Tangadan tunnel was built in 1934 as a result of a necessity to divert the old road, which was steep and difficult to negotiate. It took more than fifty workers and two years to break through solid rocks and to build a crude structure. They hammered, drilled and blew through the solid rock, which resulted in a crude structure. There was no reinforcement in the walls, so when the rain came it loose rocks fell and caused damage to the building. Two attempts were made by the Allied Forces to destroy the tunnel in order to impede the advance of the Japanese soldiers, but the tunnel was not totally destroyed.
Only in 1961 was the restoration of the tunnel started and thanks to the efforts of former congressman Lucas Paredes, the restoration works finally began in order to make the tunnel more accessible to people. Lucas Paredes got an appropriation for the restoration and improvement of the tunnel.
Food delicacy in Abra that you must try
There’s nothing better than serving patupat with muscovado sugar if you’re visiting the province of Abra.
Patupat, from the northern region of Luzon, is another popular Filipino delicacy and pasalubong. An ilocano version of suman, this delicacy is cooked in coconut milk with sugar, rolled in banana leaves, and steamed. Originally prepared in summer during sugarcane harvest, patupat is a popular Filipino snack served with brewed coffee during special occasions in Bontoc.
A traditional method in the region of processing sugarcane juice to form solids called sinuklob involves molding empty half coconut shells into molds and simultaneously preparing patupat.
Lechon de Abra
Source of Image: https://www.facebook.com/abrenian/posts/pfbid0J8mXq1aNrjFH6LAzeiaqnhxa9Cb7hrn3GhbC68p4Gjr8QH5zHKYVDJMMMujnW4Cal
There are many similarities between the lechon in Tacloban City and the one in Abra. Abra lechon is stuffed with thinly sliced leaves and seasoned with plenty of chopped garlic, pepper and salt.
Lechon, a cholesterol-rich dish consisting of roasted whole pigs, chickens, and cows, is a traditional Spanish dish in Abra. In the Philippines, the dish was originally introduced to the country as a part of Spanish cuisine, and similarly, the technique can be found in many countries where Hispanics live and eat. This method of roasting has been around for a long time, and leaves the meat with a crispy skin and very moist inside.
There is another way to prepare lechon in Abra, where it is stuffed with a plant called karimbuaya, or Euphorbia neriflolia, more commonly known as hedge euphorbia in English, or soro-soro in Tagalog. Karimbuaya is a cactus-like plant with oblong fleshy leaves.
When making the lechon stuffing, karimbuaya leaves are thinly sliced and seasoned with salt and pepper, along with plenty of chopped garlic to bring out the garlicky-spicy and zesty-tangy taste, then mashed and mixed by hand to bring out the aroma. After the herb-stuffing is completed, it is, of course, stuffed inside the hollow stomach of the pig so that all of the yummy flavor of the herb-stuffing permeates the entire pig and invites the air with mouth-watering aroma and flavors.
Rather than eating their lechon with the liver sauce so beloved by other provinces, Abrenians prefer to eat their lechon stuffed with karimbuaya and bagoong with kalamansi.
The abal-abal, also called salagubang in Tagalog, is the larvae or grubs of the species. In addition to its popularity as a delicacy, the protein-rich grubs are also edible and, according to many “Gourmands”, are even more palatable than the adult species. Among Ibanags, Itaweses, and Ilokanos, abalin is a popular fare, considered a special delicacy. Locals consider these exotic foods as not only healthy but also delicious and gather them near or on river banks during the rainy season or prior to the onset of abal-abal season (May-June).
Brown beetles, called abal-abal, appear in May after the soil has been softened by early rains.
In the early mornings after rains, Abal-abal hunters gather near the sandy soil of riverbanks where they catch brown burrowing beetles. Many of the abal-abal hunters from the whole community will be there ready to catch them, armed with nets and other proven contraptions. There are even those who believe that putting pomade on your hair will attract the abal-abals and make it easier to catch them.
Usually, abal-abal and ararawan are cooked with vinegar and salt to taste, kinirog style. At the beginning of rainy season in Abra, pan-fried beetles are always a special treat, combining sour, salty, garlicky flavors with chewy, mushy textures that make anyone cringe.
Using salt, the abal-abal is roasted with its head and body removed before cooking, leaving only the wings and feet.
It is fun to catch them alive from sandy beaches and banks along rivers, because you can play banga-banga or tie two beetles to a thread and fly around in circles mimicking a claypot or banga before cooking!
If you had the chance to see a lot of vendors selling edible insects next to what used to be a fairway’s lumber and hardware store along Santiago street, then you would already know these edible insects are already available.
Often times, dinaldalem is referred to as Igado. Dinaldalem comes from the word dalem, which means liver in the Ilocano language. This dish consists of thin slices of pork meat and liver stewed in vinegar and soy sauce. It is quite common for the pork innards to be added to the dish which would make it more of an igado dish but they are still considered dinaldalem by many people.
There was no refrigerators in rural areas at that time, so dinaldalem was cooked dry and without any vegetables to extend the shelf life of the dish. Most people like to cook dinaldalem with an oily sauce, which is very good with rice. That was of course the time when refrigerators were less common. Some also added some chick peas and green peas, both of which will contribute to the dish’s flavour and appeal.
A cascaron is a Filipino donut which is made of glutinous rice, coconut flakes, and sugar and is commonly sold on skewers. The name is derived from Spanish cascarón, referring to its common spherical shape as well as its crunchy exterior. It is generally shaped like a ball and sold on skewers, however it can also be elongated or pancake-like. Cascarón is not to be confused with cascarón, a hollowed-out chicken egg filled with prizes derived from the same name, which is also known as cascarón.
Aside from the carioca, which is known for its unique properties, there are several other names for it, including the tinudok and the bitsu-bitsu, which is a Chinese Filipino version of youtiao made from regular flour, which is also known as the bitsu-bitsu. There are a variety of cascarons which are shaped like flattened ovals that are known among the Ibanags known as pinakufu and paborot, respectively. They are also known generically called bunuelo, after a similar fritter that is made from regular flour and derived from it.

10 Places To Visit In And Around Bangued, Abra
Abra is an enigma. For me at least. It’s ruggedness and mystery is something that an adventurer should discover. This province is just so promising that there are so many opportunities for discovery. But if you’re not so much into roughing it up, the municipalities of Bangued, Tayum, Pidigan and San Quintin are interesting enough for a leisurely tour. The good thing? These are just adjacent towns connected by good roads.
Check this top ten list of things to visit within and around Bangued.
1. St. James the Elder Cathedral
Originally founded by the Augustinians who built a church in the 19th century, only to be destroyed during World War II. The Seculars, who took over built the present structure after the war. It’s a quaint yet simple facade dominated with lines.
2. San Lorenzo Ruiz Shrine
Originally built during the turn of the 19th century, it’s a beautiful brick structure that is even older than the cathedral. It is the cemetery chapel of Bangued with twin belfries and a triangular pediment. It’s a heritage structure with interesting brick details on its facade, nave and especially the rounded rear portion. This is now the Shrine of San Lorenzo Ruiz.
3. Quintin Paredes ancestral House
It’s an imposing and beautiful green and cream colored ancestral house where the stateman and senate president of 1952, Quintin Paredes was born. The style is a renovated bahay na bato that still retains the original first level made of stone with a historical marker in front. It’s just near the Cathedral.
4. Cassamata Hill National Park and viewdeck
A sprawling 54 hectare green refuge where Victoria Park, a monument to the national hero Jose Rizal, an amphitheater and a marian statue is found. Cassamata Hill National Park offers a green refuge to the people of Bangued. It’s where many go up and down for the early morning and late after jogs. But the best reason to come up? Stunning views of Bangued below, the wide plains and rivers and a view of the Sleeping Beauty mountain beyond at the viewdeck. Climb up the marian statue’s second level for the best vistas!
5. Abraeniana Museum
If you want to get a glimpse of Abra, its history and culture and the different Itneg (or Tinguian) tribes that inhabit it, head to Abraeniana Museum at the Divine Word College. There are different artifacts, from religious antiques to Itneg baskets, regalia and daily utensils as well as things and events that trace the history of the province. A donation will help but get in touch first with the Abraeniana Institute just across the building.
6. Calaba Bridge
It’s one of the Philippine’s longest bridges stretching almost a kilometer with its steel trusses. And it’s also the best place to view and appreciate the ruggedness and beauty of Abra. A late afternoon visit is perfect as school children walk home while farmers, with their carabaos crossing the shallow water down below giving a memorable bucolic image.
7. Miki at Rico’s Pansitan
A pit stop for many travelers, Rico’s Pansitan is popular for its delicious, cheap yet filling miki. A big, full bowl with lots of noodles, meat, an egg and savory soup will just set you back P35 which can be a meal in itself! The noodles are handmade and fresh everyday while the soup is a delicious broth of boiled meat stewing for hours. The pansitan also offers traditional Ilocano fare.
8. Old Pidigan Church
I got mesmerized at its beautiful brick facade with its interesting details, its texture and feel of an era gone by. This was built in the 19th century by Fray Jose Foj when an earlier church burned down in 1881. It was finished in 1890. Currently, due to its sorry state, has been converted into a warehouse while a modern church has been built beside it.
9. Tangadan Tunnel and Gabriela Silang bust
You can’t miss the Tangadan Tunnel. After the signages that welcomes you to Abra, this is the first solid structure that will greet you. Tangadan Tunnel is just one of around four or five tunnels in the country that have been hewn from the mountain. Beside it is a park with a bust of Gabriela Silang bravely atop a horse.
10. Tayum Church
This is one of the reasons why you should visit Tayum! The Sta. Catalina de Alejandria Parish Church was built by the Seculars with their Itneg converts and is one of the country’s National Cultural Treasures. The church ground is wide and expansive and at the side are century old trees with cement tables and seats which is perfect for a late afternoon visit and just gaze at the beautiful architecture. An old convent, now unused is infront but outside the perimeter fence.
Although there is also the Don Teodoro Brillantes ancestral house and museum nearby, even if it’s a National Historical property, its in bad condition and the interior is in a bad state. Museum artifacts are no longer present.

5 Wild and Beautiful Places of Abra
Let’s Explore 5 Wild and Beautiful Places in Abra, Philippines
Table of Contents
Wild and Beautiful Places of Abra
As we hike down, over and around the province of Abra, we see an exceedingly broken but wild and beautiful land, with the mountain ranges succeeding one another like the waves of the sea.
The first impression is one of barrenness. The forest vanishes, and in its place are long grassy slopes, broken here and there by scattered pines and lower down by dense growths of the graceful, feathery bamboo.
Numerous streams plunge from the high mountains toward the coast. In places they rush through deep gorges between high mountains, again they pass peacefully through mountain valleys.
Everywhere they are fed by minor streams and waterfalls until at last, as they emerge into the broader valleys of the Abra River and its tributaries, they are rivers of respectable size.
Nature has, over thousands of years, created this wondrous landscape that we know as Abra.
In the following article I have collated just 5 Wild and Beautiful Places in Abra . There are many, many more. Too many for a blog post, so make your way here and discover for yourself these and other Abramazing places.
Wild and Beautiful Places of Abra – Kinaud Pool & Rock Formation, Malibcong
Malibcong is between 3 to 5 hours travel from Bangued depending on your mode of transport. Natural Beauty comes easy in Abra. An hours hike down the Malanas River from the jump off point brings you to the Kinaud Rock Formations.
This trek involves a few river crossings, some rock hopping and boulder climbing along the way. The reward is a natural pool to swim in with a water slide carved out over the years by the cool clear river as it finds its way through the gorge.

Wild and Beautiful Places of Abra – Kili Falls and Hotspring, Tubo
The trip to Kili is long and arduous with two big river crossings and a seemingly never ending road from Tubo to Kili. Wild and Beautiful are the key words here.
The road is not paved but the scenery is breathtaking. Once in Kili you will experience the true hospitality of the Maeng Tribe.
Kili is turbo powered by Nature. The Powerful falls have created a huge basin where exotic fish are caught.
A short walk from the Falls is the Hot Spring pool which is fed by an underground thermal current and is t he perfect place to soak away your aches and pains and experience a Spa powered by Nature
Wild and Beautiful Places of Abra – Kaungugan Cave, Luba
Let’s head to Luba for some Underground adventure. Luba is one of the easier Municipalities to travel to in Abra, just one jeepney ride and one river crossing away from Bangued. Getting to Kaungugan Cave is another matter. From the drop off point there is an hours hike over one mountain with some spectacular views of the Abra River flood plains and Manabo Bridge along the trail.
From the top the exposed rock face that hides the cave entrance soon comes into view. Inside are some interesting formations created over thousands of years. Be sure to bring a flashlight to enjoy the full splendour of this creation. Be prepared to get wet too as there is also a small underground pool with a mini Kaparkan Falls like waterfall at the end of it.
Wild and Beautiful Places of Abra – Basakal Falls, Daguioman
The three-hour drive to Daguioman may wear you out, especially if you ride a jeepney. Don’t worry as, it will definitely be interesting. Abra’s landscape will act like a preview to the main attraction, the Basakal Falls.
Venturing on a trip to this beauty during the rainy season will be wild. I heard you get to use a raft to reach the falls on a summer’s day. But one can’t do this when the current is too strong.
The power of this body of water is evident in the strong wind and the shower that welcomes you in a cave-like enclosure which holds the ice cold water in a pool, before flowing it’s way back to the river.
While you trek from the village to the falls, open your senses and notice the beauty of the simple life in this hidden paradise in Abra.
Wild and Beautiful Places of Abra – Mt. Pisusok, Tineg
Although Mt Pisusok is only 1124 masl the summit offers a 360 degree panoramic view of the wild and beautiful rugged terrain of Abra. After a couple of hours hike from the jumpoff point in Sitio Vira, through the scenic Apao Rolling Hills, a couple of river crossings and passing through Barangay Apao you will begin the ascent of Mt.Pisusok. The pine forest after a couple of hours climbing is a welcome sight. Enjoy the smell of pine needles, and listen to the wind whispering as it blows between the trees. The campsite is at the far end of the pine forest within sight of the summit, 100 metres above. Here you can either set up a tent, or weather permitting, hang a hammock between two trees, before climbing to the summit for one of the best sunset views in Abra, and if you still have energy in the morning, climb again for sunrise. There are two choices for the return hike – either return the same way back to Sitio Vira, or if you have time and energy and can spend up to another 2 days in the wilds of Abra, there’s the possibility of hiking the traverse to Lacub and from there returning to Bangued.
