True Exploration

Alaska is beautiful, yet largely inaccessible. to truly appreciate and experience this incredible land, one must take to the skies, soar among the peaks and ultimately land in a remote setting..

During our many years of exploring this special place, both by helicopter and on foot, the glaciers of Southeast Alaska have remained one of the most unique and captivating features we have encountered.

Since day one, we have been dedicated to sharing this environment with others through our top-rated helicopter glacier treks and tours. NorthStar Trekking was started with safety as the top priority and a commitment to provide an outdoor adventure tailored to the interests and abilities of each guest. Let our experienced team of pilots, guides and support staff guide you on an unforgettable Alaska experience. We look forward to seeing you on the glacier.

Hear from our many satisfied guests!

We booked the Helicopter Glacier Walkabout tour and it surpassed our wildest dreams! The staff was friendly and helpful, the equipment was in good condition, and the pilot and guides were knowledgeable. The thing that made it most worthwhile was the extraordinary views.

Some local friends pointed us to this company. Our pilot took us by some breathtaking spots on the way up, then our knowledgeable and friendly guide took us around the glacier. We and our kids had a great experience among this alien looking landscape.

My dream was to be a helicopter pilot. The pilots that we had were great (sorry I forgot your names but you both were great). Landed us on the ice light as a feather. Our excursion was to trek on the glacier and climb a 28ft ice ridge.

We took their Taku water, air and ice tour up the Taku river and to the Taku glacier. Mike our pilot was great and we had such an amazing day. It was so beautiful and almost seemed like a dream. If you can take this tour, DO IT!!!

The best day ever. Beautiful landscape (incredible and amazing landscapes) . We Learned a Lot about the dog camp thanks to Joy our guide. We want to do it again!! It's a must.

  • KerriB74 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Awesome time with the puppies This was one of the highlights to my visit in Alaska. The operators were fantastic, from the van pick up to the folks at the base camp to the helicopter pilots to the folks handling the puppies to the dogsled captain. Just an all-around great several hours. Read more Written October 29, 2023

  • HandlebarsJones 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Canceled our tour Would have loved for this to be a five-star review! I've heard nothing but good things about this experience and this company. But about 2 hours before our flight they called to cancel due to weather. Understandable that they can't control the weather, but no alternative was offered. No standby, no we might be able to go if we push you back, just "we're canceling all flights today due to weather." Wouldn't have been that big of a deal if we hadn't gone on another tour to the glacier and seen groups of helicopters every 30 minutes for the five hours we were there! • dd0524 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Just go!!!!!!!!! Very well organized, from the pick up at the ship to fitting us with boots, to boarding the copter! Our pilot was Oceana and she was amazing! Gave us a beautiful tour up to the glacier, well informed and personable. Landed smoothly, let us get out and walk around, took pictures of this amazing adventure. No excuses...just go! Read more Written September 8, 2023
  • courtjel 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles You get a pilot and not a tour guide The actual glacier was outstanding! Getting there was a amazing & a first for us. My only qualm is that my pilot is exactly that, a pilot. He is not a tour guide so he was not overly informative about the glacier when we were on it. He just took us there & showed us a couple cool spots. He was cordial and respectful, but this was basically a taxi to the glacier and back. A very expensive taxi and about 20 min on the glacier. With that said, I’m glad we did it and are now done with going on glaciers because that price point was crazy. It was definitely a bucket list item I’m glad we did. This was definitely a better price than doing it through the cruise ship. We did Hubbard glacier. I also plugged in on the internet a search for coupon codes with trip advisor. Saved me about $70. Try that before you checkout. Also try to use Rakuten as your main platform to use Trip Advisor because you might also get some cash back for using their site to then use Trip Advisor. Hopefully that makes sense. At the end of the day, glad we did it. One and done! Read more Written September 4, 2023

Unlike the other helicopter tours who seem to move in packs we were the only helicopter on the glacier. It was peaceful amazing I rushed and an experience we will never forget. This was worth every penny of the cost! Read more Written September 1, 2023
  • mgdevine 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Helicopter in Juneau Our pilot Corey went through all the safety training that we would expect. He told us to ask questions whenever we wanted to, but he let us know that he might not be able to answer them because he would always be in contact with other pilots or the ground crew. We were paired with another helicopter and that pilot really showed us around the glacier and told us where we should go to see things. Being on the glacier is quite an exciting thing to do. We were able to walk around and see various different aspects of the glacier. It is a really fun adventure if you get the chance to do this while visiting Juneau. Read more Written August 29, 2023
  • RoSerTal 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Amazing experience This was the best experience ever!!! Everything from pickup from the cruise ship to the staff and pilot at Coastal Helicopters was great. The shuttle driver also pointed out brown bears on the side of road on the way to the airport. The flight to the glacier was amazing, it was my first ever time in a helicopter and i had no idea what to expect. The views and actually walking on the icefield is something I will never forget. • grege422 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles No other options for cancellations early in the morning. Just reinforcing the other negative reviews that your tour is not only dependent on weather, but the time you book as well. Our 8:30am was cancelled this morning, which fog definitely happens and is understandable. We knew that was a risk. However, when going getting off the ship we noticed they were flying again at 9:00am! We were literally penalized for not originally booking our slot 25min later. When asking for any openings to go later, they were of no help, and only said ‘Sorry - we are full today’ That’s incredibly frustrating to have no options all day only because you booked an earlier tour. So I would caution to booking an early time to give way to fog and have an option B,especially with highly disappointed children after they see other people being loaded into their vans to go on to their flights. It’s the kind of unprofessional service you expect on $25 bus tours, not $2,700 (that we paid months ago)! The tour guides at the port were extremely helpful for other options, unlike Coastal. Visiting Juneau is a capital idea

helicopter tour alaska juneau

Juneau is flanked by white snow-capped mountains, fields of blue ice, verdant green forests and frigid turquoise waters. It’s the perfect destination for travelers who love cozy small-town vibes, as well as those who seek extreme outdoor adventures. Long the land inhabited by the Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian people, the capital city of Alaska got its Western name and infrastructure during the Gold Rush. This waterfront community is an outdoor enthusiast’s haven, and boasts that it has more miles of trails and mining tunnels than road (of which there are just 190).

Make sure you pack your rain gear, as this city of 32,000 gets about 70 inches of rain a year, and around 235 days of precipitation. But no matter the forecast, locals and travelers alike will be out enjoying nature. As the Scandinavians say, “There is no bad weather, only bad clothes.”

The absolute must-see for most travelers is the Mendenhall Glacier. There are many ways to see the glacier, depending on your level of comfort. The West Glacier Trail is by far one of the best bangs for your buck. While it includes a little bit of scrambling (up a waterfall, for example), the payoff is worth far more than it will cost you to get there. The trail is 3.5 miles out and back, growing slightly longer each year as the glacier melts, and brings you right up to the face of the glacier. Since the glacier is constantly receding, it’s no longer possible to get directly on the ice using this route without an experienced guide and equipment. For less experienced hikers, Above and Beyond Alaska offers guided hiking tours and Alaskan Binoculars offers rides to the trailhead.

For a more family-friendly or accessible option, Nugget Falls Trail brings you around the other side of Mendenhall Lake directly to a massive waterfall with views of the glacier from a bit farther away. (The short, informational video in the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center is the cheapest tour of Juneau you’ll get.)

Liquid Alaska offers canoe tours that go across the lake to bring you to the face of the glacier. Or, if you’re feeling flush, you can charter a helicopter through Northstar , Coastal or Temsco Helicopters for a flightseeing tour that will land you on the glacier (tours cost $379 or more). Northstar’s Extended Helicopter Glacier Trek is the most adventurous tour for thrill seekers who want to maximize their time on the glacier, learn basic ice climbing techniques and explore more territory than the standard glacier trek tours. If you want to dogsled on a glacier, Temsco and Northstar both offer tours, both over $600.

If you’re looking for a more relaxing way to get up close to a glacier, take a full-day boat trip to Tracy Arm Fjord with Allen Marine Tours. Starting at $234, this seven-hour tour is an exceptional value and unforgettable experience. Enjoy cruising through a steep fjord, usually seeing whales, bears, eagles, harbor seals along the way. The trip culminates at one of the Sawyer Glaciers, which are often actively calving. Even if it’s cloudy or rainy, this trip is sure to be memorable and enjoyable — the glacier can look more blue when it’s overcast. If you’re looking for a shorter tour, several other companies offer two- to three-hour whale watching or city tours during the summer cruise ship season (check out Juneau Tours & Whale Watch and Allen Marine for options). If you’re seeking more water adventures, you’d be remiss not to try spotting whales and other wildlife as you ocean kayak in the Channel Islands State Marine Park on Above and Beyond Alaska’s kayaking with humpback whales tour.

For an unforgettable, once-in-a-lifetime experience, view brown bears up close and personal at Admiralty Island’s Pack Creek or Waterfall Creek, where U.S. Forest Service rangers accompany you as you view the animals in their natural habitat. The Tlingit people call this island “Kootznoowoo,” meaning “Fortress of the Bear,” for a reason. Sightseers are flown to the island by Ward Air . Both Bear Creek Outfitters and a new operator, Wild Coast Excursions , offer all-inclusive options starting at a thousand dollars a person, which includes permits, flights and other necessities.

If you’re more of a plant lover than animal lover, check out the upside-down tree gardens at Glacier Gardens . They also offer tours up the mountain in small trams during the summer season. A good place to see fireweed is along Point Bridget Trail. The drive out the road to this trail also makes for great views of the looming Chilkat Mountains. Cycling enthusiasts will enjoy Cycle Alaska’s 8.5-mile biking tour that stops at local breweries.

Another top-notch Juneau experience is cabin camping. You can rent cabins online; however, weekends can generally get booked up to six months in advance, so make sure to book far ahead of time. Most public cabins are in the backcountry and require hiking your gear out. However, some private cabins that can be rented are more accessible, such as those at the Shrine of St. Therese or on Airbnb. Nights at Eaglecrest Ski Resort’s cabin, Hilda Dam, during the winter, and a city cabin, Amalga, are among the most coveted reservations in town.

Good family activities include walking along Sandy Beach on Douglas Island. Ruins from the old mine that collapsed there give the beach a historic vibe, and informational signs along the way entertain and inform little ones. The Mount Roberts Tram usually runs during the summer cruise season, and recently started offering tours from an Alaska Native perspective, celebrating the resilience and perseverance of Alaska’s Native population. Families can rent strollers and other baby travel necessities like hiking backpacks, car seats and high chairs from Gear Up Baby .

Can You Drive to Juneau Alaska? Travel to Juneau (2024)

H ave you found yourself scratching your head and wondering if you can drive to Juneau, Alaska? If so, you’re not alone. This question has puzzled many travelers planning their Alaskan adventure.

Can you drive to Juneau Alaska? The short answer is no, you can’t drive directly to Juneau from anywhere.

As someone who lived in the huge state of Alaska for seven years, I’ve gathered a wealth of knowledge about its unique geography and transportation quirks.

In this post, we’ll unravel the mystery surrounding the accessibility of Juneau, a city known for its stunning landscapes and rich history.

We’ll tackle the complexities of Alaskan geography and transportation, providing clear, reliable information to dispel any doubts you might have.

Whether you’re planning a trip to the Last Frontier or just satisfying your curiosity, this post is designed to guide you through the confusion.

Can You Drive to Juneau, Alaska?

Despite being the capital city of Alaska, Juneau is unique in that it’s not connected to the rest of the state by a road system.

Nestled at the base of towering mountains and surrounded by the waters of the Gastineau Channel, Juneau is what’s known as a ‘roadless city.’

It is a city that’s as unique as it is beautiful. Nestled in the heart of the Inside Passage of the Alaska Marine Highway, it’s a place where mountains and glaciers serve as the backdrop to everyday life.

But there’s that weird catch – if there isn’t a road that leads directly to Juneau, how do you get there?

Well, it’s all part of the Alaskan adventure! You could drive to Bellingham in Washington State and hop on a ferry for a scenic journey.

Or, if you’re up for an epic road trip, you could traverse part of the iconic Alaskan-Canadian Highway and then catch a ferry from Skagway to Juneau.

Either way, the journey to Juneau is just as memorable as the destination itself!

Is Juneau Only Accessible by Boat?

While boat travel is a popular way to reach Juneau, it’s not the only option. Juneau is primarily accessible by two means: by sea and by air.

BY SEA : The Alaska Marine Highway System operates ferries that connect Juneau with other communities in Southeast Alaska, as well as with Bellingham, Washington. This is a scenic and popular way to reach Juneau, allowing you to bring your vehicle with you.

BY AIR : Juneau International Airport serves as a major hub for air travel in Southeast Alaska. It offers regular flights to and from several Alaskan cities and towns, as well as seasonal flights to Seattle, Washington.

So, while you can’t drive directly to Juneau, you have options when it comes to choosing your mode of transportation. Whether you prefer the leisurely pace of a ferry ride or the speed and convenience of air travel, getting to Juneau is part of the fun!

How Do I Get My Car to Juneau?

If you want to bring your car to Juneau, the most feasible option is to use the Alaska Marine Highway System, which operates a network of ferries that transport people, vehicles, and cargo to various locations in Alaska such as Whittier, Valdez , Homer, Ketchikan, and Haines, to name a few.

Here’s how you can do it:

  • Drive to a Ferry Terminal : The southernmost terminal of the Alaska Marine Highway System is in Bellingham, Washington. You can drive your car to this terminal.
  • Take the Ferry : Once you reach the terminal, you can load your car onto the ferry. The ferry will then transport you and your car along the scenic Inside Passage to Juneau. The journey takes about 2-3 days, depending on the specific route and schedule.

Remember to book your ferry passage in advance, especially during the busy summer months. Also, note that the cost of ferry travel will depend on the size of your vehicle and the number of passengers.

So, while you can’t drive directly to Juneau, you can certainly bring your car with you and enjoy the freedom of having your vehicle once you’re there!

What to Pack for Your Juneau Adventure

Heading on an adventure to Juneau, Alaska, is an exciting prospect! To ensure you’re well-prepared for your trip, it’s important to pack appropriately. Here’s a practical guide to help you decide what to bring, depending on the season and your planned activities.

Clothing : Regardless of the season, layering is key in Juneau. The weather can change quickly, so it’s best to be prepared.

  • A mix of short and long-sleeved tops
  • Warm sweater or fleece, and a waterproof jacket
  • Knit hat and light gloves
  • Comfortable walking shoes for exploring the city
  • Gore-Tex hiking boots if you plan to hit the trails.

Outdoor Gear : If you’re planning outdoor activities, consider packing the following items to make your day more comfortable and efficient.

  • Binoculars for wildlife viewing
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Backpack for day trips

Summer Accessories : If the sun is shining, which admittedly, doesn’t always happen, you will want some protection!

  • Cap or baseball hat
  • Bug spray can also be useful

Winter : Winter in Alaska can be brutally cold. Juneau can be damp as well as it is rainier in this area.

  • Warm waterproof mittens
  • Fleece-lined hat
  • Thermal Layers
  • Waterproof winter boots

Essentials : Everyone has those personal needs that one doesn’t want to forget to pack! Make a list and check it twice.

  • Travel documents
  • Medications
  • Any specialty items you might not be able to find easily in Juneau

Remember, packing for Juneau is all about preparing for adventure and being ready to embrace the elements, whatever the weather may bring.

FAQS: Can You Drive to Juneau, Alaska?

Understandably, people have quite a few questions about how to get to the small city of Juneau, Alaska! Here are some common ones and some answers.

Why is Juneau not accessible by car?

Juneau’s unique geographical location is the primary reason it’s not accessible by car. The city is nestled in the Southeast Alaska panhandle, surrounded by water on one side and towering mountains and glaciers on the other. This rugged terrain makes it impossible to build a road that directly connects Juneau to the rest of Alaska or the lower 48 states.

Are there any roads going to Juneau Alaska?

While there are no roads that connect Juneau to the rest of Alaska or the continental United States, the city itself does have a road system. The Juneau road system covers the local area, including the Mendenhall Valley, Auke Bay, and out to Thane and the Kensington Mine. However, these roads end where the city ends.

Are there cars in Juneau Alaska?

Yes, there are cars in Juneau, Alaska. Despite the city’s unique geographical location and lack of connecting roads to other cities, Juneau has a local road system that residents and visitors use for transportation within the city and its surrounding areas.

People use cars for daily commuting, running errands, and exploring the local area.

The local road system covers areas such as Downtown Juneau, the Mendenhall Valley, Auke Bay, Douglas Island, and out to Thane and the Kensington Mine.

Additionally, cars can be brought to Juneau via the Alaska Marine Highway System, which operates ferries that can transport vehicles. There are also car rental services available in Juneau for visitors who need a vehicle during their stay.

Do you need a car when visiting Juneau Alaska?

Whether you need a car when visiting Juneau, Alaska, largely depends on what you plan to do during your visit! If you’re planning to stay mainly in downtown Juneau and visit attractions such as the Alaska State Museum, the State Capitol, or the historic district, you might not need a car.

Downtown Juneau is quite walkable, and many of the main attractions are within a reasonable walking distance of each other.

However, if you want to explore areas outside of downtown, such as the Mendenhall Glacier, having a car can be beneficial. Public transportation in Juneau is limited, and while there are some bus services, they may not align with your schedule or go to all the places you want to visit.

There are also taxi services and tour companies that offer transportation to popular attractions. Some visitors also choose to rent bicycles or scooters to get around.

The Bottom Line: Can You Drive to Juneau Alaska?

So while we’ve determined that you can’t drive to Juneau, Alaska, this unique aspect only adds to the city’s charm and allure!

The journey to Juneau, whether by ferry or plane, is an adventure in itself, offering spectacular scenery in the Alaskan wilderness.

Once there, you’ll find a city rich in history, culture, and natural beauty, from the bustling downtown to the serene Mendenhall Glacier.

So, don’t let the lack of a road deter you. Embrace the adventure, set sail for the horizon, and discover the unforgettable experience that is Juneau.
