High Degree of Caution

General Travel Advice

Irish citizens may travel to Zambia for the purpose of tourism and/or visiting friends/relatives for up to 90 days in any period of 12 months. They will receive a passport entry stamp with a specified period of stay upon arrival (generally 30 days renewable) and there is no associated fee.

However, any Irish citizen whose allowed period of stay (as specified in the passport) has expired, and who wishes to extend the stay [within the limit of 90 days], should call at the nearest Immigration Office to extend the period of the visit. The extension must be sought before the allowed period of stay (as specified in passport) has passed. If the visitor wishes to remain in Zambia beyond the 90 days, they should apply for a Visiting Permit.

Further details regarding other types of visas are available online from the Zambian Department of Immigration. Irish citizens are advised to confirm all visa requirements with the Zambia High Commission in London as visa requirements may be subject to change.

When visiting Zambia, Irish citizens are encouraged to register  their details and travel plans with the Embassy.

A valid passport is required for travel to Zambia. Irish passports should have a minimum validity of six months from the date of arrival and have at least three blank pages. Passport cards cannot be used.

For more information on visas and passports, please see the Additional Information tab.

Visitors to Zambia are advised to follow the guidance of national and local authorities and stay fully informed of what's going on by monitoring local news and social media.

Citizens can also follow the Embassy on social media (Twitter @IrelandinZambia  and Facebook ) to ensure access to relevant updates and alerts.

Emergency Assistance

The best help is often close at hand so if visitors have problems, try talking to local contacts, tour operator representative or hotel management.

Visitors can contact the emergency services in Zambia by dialling 999. Specific emergency numbers are:

  • Police: 999
  • Fire brigade: 993 /+260 211 228 265

Our tips for Safe Travels:

  • Get comprehensive travel insurance that covers all your planned activities.
  • Register  your details with us so that we can contact you quickly if there’s an unforeseen crisis like a natural disaster or a family emergency.
  • Follow us on twitter  @dfatravelwise  for the latest travel updates.

Safety and security

Social unrest

Avoid any political rallies, demonstrations or large gatherings. There are occasional student demonstrations at the University of Zambia on the Great East Road (which is the main road to the airport). Keep yourself informed of what’s going on around you by monitoring local media and staying in contact with your hotel or tour organiser.

Although the threat from terrorism in Zambia is low, there is still a global risk of indiscriminate terrorist attacks, which could be against civilian targets, including places frequented by tourists and expatriates.

There is a risk of landmines near Zambia’s borders with the Democratic Republic of Congo and Mozambique, and on the Angolan side of the Zambia-Angola border. Don’t stray off main routes, particularly in rural areas, and always check with your local contact or tour operator before travelling to affected regions.

Pick pocketing and general theft is common particularly at some restaurants and internet cafes near the bus and train stations in Lusaka and Livingstone. Always take sensible precautions:

  • Don’t carry your credit card, travel tickets and money together - leave spare cash and valuables in a safe place
  • Don’t carry your passport unless absolutely necessary and leave a copy of your passport (and travel and insurance documents) with family or friends at home
  • Avoid showing large sums of money in public and don’t use ATMs after dark, especially if you’re alone. Check no one has followed you after conducting your business
  • Only use reputable banks or bureaux de change to exchange money or use ATMs as counterfeit notes are in circulation
  • Avoid dark and unlit streets and stairways, and arrange to be picked up or dropped off as close to your hotel or apartment entrance as possible. Avoid walking after dark particularly in downtown areas
  • Keep a close eye on your personal belongings and hold on to them in public places such as internet cafés, train and bus stations
  • Be aware a high proportion of the civil population is armed

Reporting crime

If you’re a victim of a crime while in Zambia, report it to the local police immediately. And you can contact us at the Irish Embassy in Lusaka if you need help.

We advise all Irish citizens resident in Zambia to continue to take the usual precautions at their homes, in vehicles and when walking in public. Please remain vigilant and contact the Police or the Embassy if you have any concerns.

Prescription Medication

There have been reports of tourists being detained for possession of prescription medication, without the doctor prescription. If you require medication and will travel with sufficient supply for your stay, be sure to retain and carry the appropriate documentation.

Road Safety

Road accidents are the major cause of fatalities in Zambia. Driving in urban areas during the day is relatively safe, but driving at night outside of main towns should be avoided where possible. Hazards include poor-standard of driving generally, poorly maintained vehicles, poor road conditions, pedestrians walking on the road without reflective clothing, stray animals and tired, distracted or drunk drivers.

Extra care is advised during the rainy season (November to April) as roads and bridges can be washed away.

Caution should be exercised if considering the use of public transport, the safety standards of the vehicle and driving may be lead to unnecessary risk, especially on long journeys. Public transport in urban areas can be severely overcrowded.

If you are driving, be vigilant, keep vehicle doors locked and windows closed, and be aware of your surroundings, especially if you are driving after dark.

Security risks increase when it is dark, especially in city centres.  Keep valuables and originals of important documents in safe places.

If you wish to exchange money, use reputable banks, bureaux de change or ATMs.

Practical advice:

  • Bring your full Irish driving licence and your international driving permit and make sure you have adequate and appropriate insurance
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is against the law and you risk being detained, fined or banned from driving if caught
  • There are occasional incidents of armed robberies and vehicle hijackings. Keep your vehicle doors locked and your bags kept out of sight to prevent opportunistic bag-snatching if you're stopped at traffic lights
  • Do not leave valuables visible when parking your car
  • It is an offence to use a mobile phone while driving

Hiring a vehicle

If you’re hiring a vehicle, we advise you not to hand over your passport as a form of security. If you’re allowing your passport to be photocopied, keep it in your sight at all times.

Check that you have adequate insurance and read the small print of the vehicle hire contract (particularly any waiver that will come into effect if the vehicle is damaged).

Public transport

Minibuses in urban areas are usually severely overcrowded and badly driven.

Wild animals

Wild animals including poisonous snakes are a constant threat to travellers and residents in Zambia. Always follow local regulations and follow your safari rangers’ instructions.

Adventure sports

There are many adventure sport operators in Victoria Falls and serious accidents and deaths occasionally occur. Check that your travel insurance will cover you in the event of death or injury to yourself or a third party.

Local laws and customs

Remember, the local laws apply to you as a visitor and it is your responsibility to follow them. Be sensitive to local customs, traditions and practices as your behaviour may be seen as improper, hostile or may even be illegal.

Illegal drugs

The possession, smuggling and/or use of narcotics, including marijuana, is strictly prohibited in Zambia and can result in severe punishments. Possession of even small quantities may result in sentences up to five years in prisons where conditions are very poor.

Pornography

Possessing pornography is illegal in Zambia.

Homosexuality

Homosexuality is illegal in Zambia and can result in long prison sentences. Caution and discretion are advised at all times.

Photography

Be careful of photographing sites deemed sensitive by the authorities, such as power stations, army barracks, government buildings, river junctions and airports. It is better to err on the side of caution and not take the photographs.

National Parks

Visitors to Zambia’s National Parks should be aware of recent arrests of visitors who removed items from the park such as, for example, a piece of animal bone.  Please respect local laws and do not remove any items from national parks.

Get travel and medical insurance

Before travelling, the Department strongly recommends that you obtain comprehensive travel insurance which will cover all overseas medical costs, including medical repatriation/evacuation, repatriation of remains and legal costs. You should check any exclusions and, in particular, that your policy covers you for the activities you want to undertake.

Medical facilities

Medical facilities in Zambia are poor, especially in rural areas.  Even basic drugs and clean needles may not be available. Take particular care if travelling with children.

Vaccinations

Check what vaccinations you may need for your trip at least eight weeks before you travel. We can’t advise you on vaccinations, but you can get information about vaccinations from your local GP or an International Health and Travel Centre.

Make sure you bring enough medication for your entire trip and for any unexpected delays.

You may wish to also bring copies of your prescription in case you lose your medication. When you arrive, customs officials may ask to see prescriptions for medications brought into the country.

Malaria is a threat in Zambia. Before travelling, ask your doctor about suitable anti-malarial medication. And after arrival, take precautions to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes by using bed nets and repellents, and wearing closed shoes, long sleeves and trousers.

Cholera and dysentery

Cholera and dysentery are common, especially during the rainy season (November – April).  You should only drink bottled or boiled water and avoid ice in drinks. Avoid food from street vendors. If you suffer from diarrhoea during a visit to Zambia you should seek immediate medical attention.

Rabies and TB

These are common in Zambia.

HIV and AIDS

HIV and AIDS are prevalent in Zambia, with current rates estimated at 13.5% of the adult population. If you’re engaging in activities that expose you to possible HIV infection, make sure you take adequate precautions. If you suspect that you have been exposed, you should seek immediate medical attention.

Additional information

Entry requirements (visa/passport)

When visiting Zambia, Irish citizens are encouraged to share their contact details and travel plans with the Embassy. This can be done online here .

Visitors are usually allowed to remain in the country for the period that corresponds with their air ticket information when they arrive at the port of entry. Please ensure you check the validity of the visa you are given while still at the Visa Counter. Mistakes can be costly and difficult to rectify afterwards.

Visas may be extended at the discretion of the immigration department up to a maximum of 90 days. Do not overstay your visa as you risk a court appearance, imprisonment, fine and/or deportation.

The passport should be valid for a minimum of 6 months from the date of arrival and have at least 2 blank pages.

It is advisable to take a number of photocopies of your passport with you when travelling to Zambia and you should carry a photocopy of your passport at all times during your stay.

If your passport is lost or stolen while you are abroad, we can help. We can issue you with an emergency travel document to get you home.

We will do our best to help you as quickly as possible but this can take some time. Your location and circumstances may limit the help we can give you.

Citizens should  contact the Irish Embassy in Lusaka  to find out what is needed to apply for a passport. The Embassy can also advise on the fees which apply.

Journalists

Visitors wishing to bring in specialist/professional video recording equipment must apply for press accreditation to film in Zambia. Temporary clearance must be obtained for camera equipment from the Zambia News and Information Department. It is prudent to advise the Embassy of your arrival and departure dates with a minimum of three weeks’ notice prior to the date of arrival. Visitors without the proper documentation and clearance, may have equipment confiscated on arrival.

December to April in Zambia is hot and wet with torrential downpours in the afternoon. May to August is dry and fairly cool. September to November is dry but progressively hotter.

Additional care is advised if driving during the rainy season (November to April) as roads and bridges can be washed away.

Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

A passport is required to enter Zambia. Passports must be valid for at least six months upon arrival and have at least three blank pages upon each entry. Travelers transiting other countries on the way to Zambia, particularly  South Africa , should refer to their  Country Information pages  for additional blank page requirements. U.S. Passport holders do not require a visa to visit Zambia.

You must carry the original or a certified copy of your passport and immigration permit at all times. Certified copies must be obtained from the office that issued the permit. If your passport is lost or stolen, visit the  Zambian Department of Immigration  to obtain a replacement entry permit before attempting to depart the country.

Departure Tax/Security Charge: U.S. citizens must pay an airport departure tax in local currency. This tax is included in the cost of international flight tickets. For domestic flights, passengers pay a nominal charge in Zambian kwacha prior to entering the departure hall, only for chartered flights.

The U.S. Department of State is unaware of any HIV/AIDS entry restrictions for visitors to or foreign residents of Zambia.

Find information on  dual nationality ,  prevention of international child abduction  and  customs regulations  on our websites.

Safety and Security

Zambia has few major security concerns. Visitors can avoid criminal activity by utilizing common sense measures provided below.

Political activity, especially during national and local elections, can lead to civil unrest and low-level violence. Spontaneous demonstrations occasionally occur and are often exacerbated by police action. Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can quickly turn confrontational and escalate into violence. To stay safe, you should:

  • avoid large crowds, demonstrations, and political gatherings
  • follow media coverage of local events
  • be aware of your surroundings at all times
  • exercise caution when traveling throughout the country
  • avoid walking alone in the downtown areas, high-density residential compounds, public parks, and poorly lit areas—especially at night.

Crime:  The most commonly reported crimes committed against Westerners in Lusaka are non-violent confrontations characterized as crimes of opportunity (theft of unattended possessions in public places or hotel rooms, confidence scams). Pickpockets operate in crowded markets and on public transportation, and visitors have reported snatch attacks of bags and smartphones on busy city streets as well as smash-and-grabs of valuables from vehicles idling in slow traffic and from parked cars. Other crimes, including thefts, violent attacks, including home invasions/robberies, and sexual assaults have occurred on many occasions. Victims are, on occasion, followed from banks, nightclubs, and ATMs and robbed at gunpoint, on the street, or upon arrival at their residence. Walking alone is not advisable in the downtown areas, high-density residential neighborhoods referred to locally as a “compound”, public parks, and other poorly illuminated areas, especially at night.

Be aware of:

  • Pick-pockets operating in crowded markets and on public transportation;
  • Snatch attacks of bags and smart phones on busy city streets;
  • “Smash and grab” of valuables from vehicles idled in traffic and from parked cars;
  • Thefts, violent attacks, home invasions/robberies; and
  • Recent incidents involving sexual assaults.

Demonstrations  occur frequently. They may take place in response to political or economic issues, on politically significant holidays, and during international events.

  • Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly become violent.
  • Avoid areas around protests and demonstrations.
  • Check local media for updates and traffic advisories.

International Financial Scams:  See the  Department of State Department of State  and the FBI pages for information.

Internet romance and financial scams are prevalent in Zambia. Scams are often initiated through Internet postings/profiles or by unsolicited emails and letters. Scammers almost always pose as U.S. citizens who have no one else to turn to for help. Common scams include:

  • Romance/Online dating
  • Money transfers
  • Contracts with promises of large commissions
  • Work permits/job offers

Border Areas:  Travelers should not drive off-road or in remote areas near the borders with the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Angola because of the danger of undetected land mines and unexploded ordnance. If you must travel to these areas, you should drive in convoys and carry satellite telephones. Parts of the DRC border area can be plagued with unrest and/or armed criminal elements. See the Country Information pages for the  DRC  and  Angola  for additional information.

Victims of Crime:

U.S. citizen victims of sexual assault are encouraged to contact the U.S. Embassy for assistance. Report crime to the local police at 991 or 112 and contact the U.S. Embassy at + (260) 011-357-000 or + (260) 966-050-123.

Remember that local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting crime.

See our webpage on  help for U.S. victims of crime overseas .

  • Help you find appropriate medical care
  • Assist you in reporting a crime to the police
  • Contact relatives or friends with your written consent
  • Provide general information regarding the victim’s role during the local investigation and following its conclusion
  • Provide a list of local attorneys
  • Provide our information on  victim’s compensation programs in the U.S .
  • Provide an emergency loan for repatriation to the United States and/or limited medical support in cases of destitution
  • Help you find accommodation and arrange flights home
  • Replace a stolen or lost passport

Domestic Violence:  U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence may contact the Embassy for assistance.

The legal age of marriage in Zambia is 16 for boys and girls with parental consent and 21 without consent. The law also prohibits Female genital mutilation or cutting (FGM/C) for women and girls and criminalizes rape and other sexual offenses, and courts have discretion to sentence convicted rapists to life imprisonment with hard labor. The law however does not include provisions for spousal rape. The penal code criminalizes domestic violence between spouses and among family members living in the same home. It also provides for prosecution of most crimes of gender-based violence, and penalties for conviction range from a fine to 25 years imprisonment, depending on the severity of injury and whether a weapon was used.

Tourism : The tourism industry is unevenly regulated, and safety inspections for equipment and facilities do not commonly occur. Hazardous areas/activities are not always identified with appropriate signage, and staff may not be trained or certified either by the host government or by recognized authorities in the field. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is typically available only in/near major cities and there are no trauma facilities in the country. First responders are generally unable to access areas outside of major cities and to provide urgent medical treatment. U.S. citizens are advised to purchase medical evacuation insurance .

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties:  You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned.  Individuals establishing a business or practicing a profession that requires additional permits or licensing should seek information from the competent local authorities, prior to practicing or operating a business.

Furthermore, some laws are also prosecutable in the United States, regardless of local law. For examples, see our website on  crimes against minors abroad  and the U.S. Department of Justice  website.

Arrest Notification:  If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately. See our  webpage  for further information.

Counterfeit and Pirated Goods: Although counterfeit and pirated goods are prevalent in many countries, they may still be illegal according to local laws. You may also pay fines or have to give them up if you bring them back to the United States. See the U.S. Department of Justice website for more information.

Drugs : Possession of small quantities of an illegal substance can constitute drug trafficking in Zambia. A list of controlled substances in Zambia is included in the Local Resources section of the  U.S. Embassy Lusaka's webpage . When visiting Zambia, you should consider carrying any prescribed medications in their original bottles with a doctor’s prescription.

Wild Animal Products: It is illegal to purchase tortoise shells, rhino horns, elephant ivory, or any items made out of these materials. Other wildlife products, such as hippo teeth, crocodile teeth or skins, flat skins, horns, or animal bones, should only be purchased from animal product vendors licensed with Zambia’s Department of National Parks and Wildlife, which provide certification of purchase. Failure to produce a valid and legitimate certificate for these prescribed trophies can result in a five-year minimum prison sentence. Travelers must present the items and certification of purchase in person to Department of National Parks and Wildlife officials within 45 days of departure to obtain an export permit. Permits for items derived from CITES regulated species, such as hippo or crocodile, may take a number of days to obtain, may include additional fees, and may require an import permit from a destination country. Wildlife products with no export permit will be confiscated upon departure and the Government of Zambia will prosecute offenders to the fullest extent of the law with penalties ranging from large fines to minimum five-year prison sentences. It is illegal to export game meat in any form: dried, processed, or raw.

Faith-Based Travelers:  See our following webpages for details:

  • Faith-Based Travel Information
  • International Religious Freedom Report  – see country reports
  • Human Rights Report  – see country reports

  • Best Practices for Volunteering Abroad

LGBTQI+ Travelers:  Zambian law criminalizes consensual same-sex sexual activity and penalties for conviction of engaging in “acts against the order of nature” are 15 years to life imprisonment. The lesser charge of “gross indecency” carries penalties of up to 14 years imprisonment.

LGBTQI+ persons in particular are at risk of societal violence due to prevailing prejudices, misperceptions of the law, lack of legal protections, and inability to access health services.

See our  LGBT QI+ Travel Information page and section 6 of our  Human Rights report  for further details.

Travelers with Disabilities:  The law in Zambia prohibits discrimination against persons with physical, sensory, intellectual, or mental disabilities, but the law is not effectively enforced. The Zambia Agency for Persons with Disabilities was created to promote awareness relating to the prevention of disabilities and the care of persons with disabilities; to cooperate with other government ministries in providing preventive, educational, training, employment, and rehabilitation services for persons with disabilities. Cultural attitudes toward disability vary, but in general social acceptance of persons with disabilities in public is not as prevalent as in the United States. Despite some improvements in largely urban areas, physical accessibility to services remains a pervasive problem across most of Zambia. The most common types of accessibility may include accessible facilities, information, and communication/access to services/ease of movement or access. Expect accessibility to be limited in public transportation, lodging, communication/information, and general infrastructure. Contact the US Embassy in Zambia to receive a list of providers.

Students:  See our  Students Abroad  page and  FBI travel tips.

Women Travelers:  See our travel tips for  Women Travelers .

Private medical clinics in major cities provide reasonable care, but major medical emergencies usually require medical evacuation to South Africa, Europe, or the United States. The nearest air ambulances are based in South Africa. Government hospitals and clinics are often understaffed and lack supplies. Basic medical care outside of major cities is extremely limited. Doctors and hospitals expect immediate cash payment for health services.

For emergency services in Zambia, dial 999 for General Emergency, 991 for Police and 993 for Fire.

 Ambulance services are:

  • not widely available and training and availability of emergency responders may be below U.S. standards.
  • not equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment.
  • not staffed with trained paramedics and often have little or no medical equipment.
  • Injured or seriously ill travelers may prefer to take a taxi or private vehicle to the nearest major hospital rather than wait for an ambulance.

We do not pay medical bills.  Be aware that U.S. Medicare does not apply overseas.

Medical Insurance:  Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. See our webpage for more information on insurance overseas. Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for more information on type of insurance you should consider before you travel overseas.

We strongly recommend  supplemental insurance  to cover medical evacuation.

Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription. Check the Dangerous Drugs Act , or consult the Zambia Medicines Regulatory Authority to ensure the medication is legal in Zambia.

The following diseases are prevalent:

  • African trypanosomiasis
  • Hepatitis A
  • Hepatitis B
  • African Tick-Bite Fever
  • Chikungunya
  • Tuberculosis
  • Rift River Valley
  • Ross River Virus Disease
  • Leptospirosis
  • Schistomsomiasis

Use the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended mosquito repellents and sleep under insecticide-impregnated mosquito nets.  Chemoprophylaxis is recommended for all travelers even for short stays.

HIV/AIDS : Zambia has a very high burden of HIV. Travelers are generally at low risk for getting HIV but certain practices such as having unprotected sex or sharing needles with people who are or might be infected with HIV can significantly increase the risk of HIV transmission.  For more information on what you can do before and during travel to prevent HIV infection please visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website.

There are shortages of medicine and medical supplies throughout Zambia.

Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website for more information about Resources for Travelers regarding specific issues in Zambia.

Vaccinations:  Be up-to-date on all  vaccinations  recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Air Quality: Visit AirNow Department of State for information on air quality at U.S. Embassies and Consulates.

The U.S. Embassy maintains a list of doctors and hospitals  here under "local resources." We do not endorse or recommend any specific medical provider or clinic.

Health facilities in general

  • Public medical clinics lack basic resources and supplies.
  • Private hospitals usually require advance payment or proof of adequate insurance before admitting a patient.
  • Patients bear all costs for transfer to or between hospitals.

Pharmaceuticals

  • Exercise caution when purchasing medication overseas.  Pharmaceuticals, both over the counter and requiring prescription in the United States, are often readily available for purchase with little controls. Counterfeit medication is common and may prove to be ineffective, the wrong strength, or contain dangerous ingredients.  Medication should be purchased in consultation with a medical professional and from reputable establishments.
  • U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Food and Drug Administration are responsible for rules governing the transport of medication back to the United States. Medication purchased abroad must meet their requirements to be legally brought back into the United States. Medication should be for personal use and must be approved for usage in the United States. Please visit the U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Food and Drug Administration websites for more information.

Assisted Reproductive Technology and Surrogacy

  • If you are considering traveling to Zambia to have a child through use of assisted reproductive technology (ART) or surrogacy, please see our ART and Surrogacy Abroad page .

Water Quality

  • In many areas, tap water is not potable. Bottled water and beverages are generally safe, although you should be aware that many restaurants and hotels serve tap water unless bottled water is specifically requested. Be aware that ice for drinks may be made using tap water.

Adventure Travel

  • Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website for more information about Adventure Travel .

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety:  Vehicle travel is extremely hazardous under normal conditions but particularly at night and in inclement weather.

When traveling in Zambia, please be aware:

  • Secondary roads are not well maintained; use major roads whenever possible.
  • Most roads do not have shoulders or sidewalks and are poorly lit.
  • Pedestrians and livestock use the roadways.
  • Passing another vehicle is dangerous given the general condition of roads.
  • Lookout for tree branches or other debris which local drivers often place behind their cars to indicate a breakdown or trouble.
  • Cars with non-functioning headlights and taillights are a common hazard.
  • Night driving is discouraged.
  • There are no emergency services for stranded or injured drivers.
  • Auto accident victims are vulnerable to theft by those pretending to be helpful.

Traffic Laws:

  • Vehicles drive on the left side of the road.
  • Vehicles in traffic circles travel clockwise.
  • It is illegal to turn left on a red light.
  • Splashing a pedestrian as you drive through water is a traffic violation.
  • You should come to a stop and pull to the side of the road if you hear sirens indicating an emergency vehicle or official motorcade.
  • Use of seat belts is mandatory, as are helmets for motorcyclists.
  • A child's seat is not mandatory by law but is recommended.

Victoria Falls is one major reason to visit Zambia. Ensure you can with travel vaccines, medications and more from Passport Health.

Travel Vaccines and Advice for Zambia

Passport Health offers a variety of options for travellers throughout the world.

Located in Southern Africa, Zambia is a gorgeous country that provides travellers with a glimpse at beautiful wilderness and wildlife.

Though the country is landlocked, there are three rivers flowing through Zambia. One of the most popular landmarks is Victoria Falls, which is one of the World’s Seven Natural Wonders and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are also safaris for travellers to visit, without the large crowds that often come with safaris in Kenya or South Africa.

In the cities, there are also bustling markets, delicious restaurants, and a lively nightlife.

Do I Need Vaccines for Zambia?

Yes, some vaccines are recommended or required for Zambia. The National Travel Health Network and Centre and WHO recommend the following vaccinations for Zambia: hepatitis A , hepatitis B , typhoid , cholera , yellow fever , rabies , polio and tetanus .

See the bullets below to learn more about some of these key immunisations:

  • Hepatitis A – Food & Water – Recommended for most travellers to the region, especially if unvaccinated.
  • Hepatitis B – Blood & Body Fluids – Recommended for travellers to most regions.
  • Tetanus – Wounds or Breaks in Skin – Recommended for travellers to most regions, especially if not previously vaccinated.
  • Typhoid – Food & Water – Recommended for travellers to most regions.
  • Cholera – Food & Water – Recommended for travel to most regions.
  • Yellow Fever – Mosquito – Required if travelling from a region with yellow fever. Recommended for all travellers over 9 months of age, except travelling to the North West and Western Provinces.
  • Rabies – Saliva of Infected Animals – High risk country. Vaccine recommended for long-stay travellers and those who may come in contact with animals.
  • Polio – Food & Water – Considered a routine vaccination for most travel itineraries. Single adult booster recommended.

See the tables below for more information:

Malaria is a serious threat in Zambia. Antimalarial medication is recommended for all travellers to the region. Dengue and chikungunya are also present and can be prevented through proper use of mosquito repellents and nettings.

Rabies poses some risk to travellers of various types. Consult with a travel health specialist to learn if this vaccine is right for your trip.

Visit our vaccinations page to learn more. Travel safely with Passport Health and schedule your appointment today by calling or book online now .

Do I Need a Visa or Passport for Zambia?

A visa is needed to enter Zambia. Be sure to check your visa documents, as 90 days is standard but many travellers will be authorized for less. Passports must have at least six months validity. Proof of yellow fever vaccination may be required if you are travelling from a region where yellow fever is present.

What is the Climate Like in Zambia?

Zambia is a tropical country, meaning it is warm and receives a fair amount of rain. The dry season runs from May to October, meaning there is little rain and low humidity. From November to April is the wet season. During this time, you’ll experience mostly afternoon rains and high humidity.

Areas situated in lower-lying valleys, as opposed to the elevated areas in central and southern Zambia, are much hotter.

How Safe is Zambia?

Travel to areas bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo and Angola should be limited due to border conflicts and undetected land mines.

Major cities are safe during the day. But, there have been violent attacks reported. Theft or pick-pocketing is common. Travellers should be cautious whilst in-country and should stay in groups when possible.

Visiting Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls is one of the most popular destinations in Zambia. Over one hundred million cubic meters of water fall over the edge of each minute during the rainy season.

The adventurous can bungee jump off the Victoria Falls bridge, zip line across the Batoka Gorge, white water raft below the fall, experience tandem kayaking or take a beautiful helicopter flight to see the river and the land around it.

What Should I Pack for Zambia?

While an amazing country, a trip to Zambia does need some extra packing:

  • Sun Cream – Zambia is very warm and travellers will likely be outside exploring the water or safaris.
  • Swimsuit – Most visitors will want to visit at least one of three rivers in the country, making a kit fit for water a must.
  • Money for Taxes – When leaving the country, travellers will need to pay departure taxes and security charges.

Top airlines flying from Ireland to Zambia

I have a very good experience flighting with emirates. All my expectations were fit well.

More leg room or a bed hahaha but in all was one of the best flys I been on

The flight experience was good, but connection time was cut shorted because of delayed start.. it would have been helpful if the flight showed which gate/terminal we need to go for connecting flight and flight timing was less than 30 minutes to connect which made ourselves stressful to catch next flight 😔

Better entertainment; the lack of it made the very long flight even longer

Very good ..nice comfort..crew service was good..and no delays in time ..they always on time..

The experience of the flight. The food options have definitely gone down

I am vegan. The food was balanced, tasty and enough. I enjoyed the ride. The crew was very friendly and went out of their way to please the passengers.

The internet connection did was not functioning as per normal.

I didn't travel from the start I changed my ticket long time ago

Everything was good but I think food choices could've been better

Delayed my flights and no communication. We end up spending 6 hrs in Doha. No food or any concern from the airline. Terrible

For a short flight, Qatar Airways offers very good onboard service.

They made us deliberate waste time by holding our passports and boarding passes making us miss the flight

This is my first and last flight with Qatar because when we go for boarding pass in Delhi airport the team asked for money charging me for hand baggage which is technically including with my ticket so also we get one our temple pics I ask them to checking in but they tell me I have to pay $500 dollars for that additional which is not make sense than I diseased to throw away because I can’t take with us . For carry in beg also I pay some Indian n currency for the guy who help I already pay 6 passengers ticket cost me $8000 so really I’m not happy . PLUS MY 6 checked baggage was damaged I already claim for four beg at airport but now I’m worried about my stuff inside maybe broken too which is more expensive stuff me really bad experience

Too many boarding protocols. Never experienced with other international flights.

Polite and helpful crew. My son developed fever. Crew members came and gave him medication and also came and enquired about his health several times.

The 2nd flight from Doha to Mumbai was not of international level expected while booking with Qatar

Boarding process was terrible. Will not travel Qatar Airways if I had an alternative. The food was one of the worst, even for airline food.

There was no phone charger, uncomfortable seats, unprofessional flight attendants, didn’t like food

Flight could have been better. Sandwiches provided in the meal were inedible. Service was pathetic

Three Whitney Point Wrestlers to compete in Ireland

WHITNEY POINT, N.Y. (WBNG) -- In October, three Whitney Point High School wrestlers will travel to Ireland to participate in an international tournament.

Assistant coach Dick Ballard has been with Whitney Point for 42 years. During his tenure, the wrestling team has traveled to multiple countries, but this will be their first international trip since the COVID-19 pandemic. When Ballard learned about the opportunity for his wrestlers to compete in Ireland, he used his connections to make it happen.

“My daughter was checking things on Facebook, and she saw a post that they needed people for Ireland from Mohawk Valley,” Ballard said. “I know the guy personally, so I called him, and he said sure.”

Junior Kyle Kitson was surprised to learn he was one of the athletes chosen for the trip.

“This was kind of a surprise. Like one day, my mom was like, ‘Oh, you’re going to Ireland,’” Kitson said. “I was like, ‘Oh, okay,’ and now it’s happening.”

Sophomore Joseph Card, the youngest of the three making the trip, he hopes to shake off nerves once he steps onto the mats in Ireland.

“For me, I’m really nervous, but as soon as I step out there, it just all goes away,” Card said.

Senior Mason Baxter, the third Whitney Point wrestler heading to Ireland, knows it takes a full team to pull everything off.

“It takes a good practice partner to get good at wrestling,” Baxter said. “It takes fundraising to send people to Ireland.”

Golden Eagles head coach Austin Ritchcreek says it’s important to represent the United States well in the tournament.

“Trying to carry that torch, especially coming off the Olympics cycle,” Ritchcreek said. “I think that’s first and foremost most important.”

The three athletes will wrestle for Mohawk Valley Wrestling Club next month.

22 gorgeous gay men from around the world to celebrate Elska's 9-year anniversary

Courtesy of Elska Magazine

It's hard to believe, but for the past nine years now, Elska Magazine has been blessing the world with some of our favorite — and gay — travel portraits of men from all over the world!

Thanks to Elska , we've had the privilege of meeting a diverse, large group of men from all corners of the globe and in many underrated cities in some of the most traveled-to countries. We've met men from Mumbai , heartthrobs from Yokohama , hunks from Munich , and studs from San Francisco , and everywhere else in between!

" Elska is a bi-monthly photography and storytelling publication dedicated to sharing the bodies and voices of men from LGBTQ + communities all over the world," the publication's about page reads about who they are. "Each issue is made in a different city where readers get to know to a cross-section of everyday local guys through honest photography and personal stories."

"I love to travel, I love photography, and I love men!" Elska 's editor and chief photographer Liam Campbell said in a statement about what the point of the project is. " Elska started as a way to combine these loves into a publication that I hoped would enable me to do these three things. Essentially Elska is a record of my travels, one city at a time, with the focus on the men I meet there.

"Beyond this, Elska is a reaction to my rejection of an early dream to be a fashion photographer. When I saw first-hand how disgustingly models are treated and how nasty the industry is in general, I wanted to create something that would treat people with respect and dignity, and that would reflect the way I perceive beauty, which is something connected to love. By getting to know the men I photograph, both through the intimate process of a photoshoot and through the stories they share, a connection develops, a sort of act of love, which reveals their beauty. And I hope that through sharing my honest style of photography and these men's stories, readers will also discover their beauty and fall in love."

To celebrate Elska' s nearly decade-long reign of swoon-worthy, sexy travel content, we thought it'd fun to re-meet some of the gorgeous gays of the zine from over the years and from all over!

Scroll through to see more portraits from Elska 's nine-year celebration! And for more information on Elska and to order previous issues, visit their official website here .

Passengers on 3-year cruise speak out as ship remains stuck in harbor

The Villa Vie Odyssey is now three months past its original launch date.

Passengers planning to travel the world on a three-year cruise are speaking out as they remain stuck on land, waiting for their ship to depart.

Holly Hennessy said she has been stuck in Belfast, Ireland, for three months as she and her fellow passengers wait for the cruise ship, the Villa Vie Odyssey, to be repaired.

"It's cold. It's windy. It's damp. It usually rains," Hennessy told " Good Morning America ," describing the past three months in Belfast. "I've been moved five times to different accommodations."

Johan Bodin and his partner Lanette Canen have spent the past three months traveling around Europe as they wait for the ship to depart from Belfast. The couple relocated from Maui, Hawaii, to spend the next several years on the Villa Vie Odyssey, according to their website, where they post travel content.

"We intend to stay on for a long haul, but who knows how we feel after a year," Bodin told "GMA."

Bodin and other passengers on the Villa Vie Odyssey, operated by Villa Vie Residences, have been waiting since May for the cruise to depart.

Mikael Petterson, the founder and CEO of Villa Vie Residences, told "GMA" the Villa Vie Odyssey is a 30-year-old ship. He said the ship made the trip to Belfast on its own power before other maintenance issues were discovered.

"The rudder stocks took six weeks to get done, and now we're dealing with a couple of other things," Petterson said. "But overall, I think three months is actually not that bad given the circumstances."

What is a crew appreciation fee? Why 1 major cruise line is raising the price

Petterson added that the ship's repairs are in their final stages, and said he expects the ship to depart the week of Sept. 9.

The cruise is advertised to visit 475 destinations in 147 countries. The price to purchase an all-inclusive cabin starts at around $100,000, with an additional monthly fee for at least 15 years.

While the Villa Vie Odyssey has been out of commission, passengers are allowed on the ship during the day but cannot stay overnight, staying in hotel rooms in Belfast instead.

Canen said she and Bodin are optimistic that after months of delays, they will sail out of Belfast soon.

"Hopefully by next weekend, we'll be floating away, saying goodbye to Belfast," Canen said.
