The essential guide to Switzerland
Here’s everything you need to know about exploring the “Playground of Europe”—when to go, where to stay, what to do, and how to get around.
Why you should visit Switzerland
Skiing in the Alps. Swimming in crystal clear lakes. Modern cities with medieval old towns. All that chocolate and cheese.
Best time to visit Switzerland
Spring: Hike along low-elevation trails through forests, past gorges, waterfalls, and lakes. Take the Glacier Express panoramic train across the Alps. Basel is a party city during its three-day carnival, Basler Fasnacht .
Summer: Most mountain areas are open from July. (Many resorts close between the skiing and summer seasons, usually April-June.) Europe’s largest jazz festival, Montreux Jazz Festival , takes place on the banks of Lake Geneva . Swiss National Day (August 1) is celebrated nationwide with bonfires and fireworks.
Autumn: Try regional Swiss cheeses at Lucerne’s Cheese Festival . Celebrate the start of the grape harvest in Neuchâtel at the lively Grape Harvest Festival (Fête des Vendanges). The Food Zurich festival features food tours, markets, and culinary events.
Winter: Switzerland’s mountain resorts are a magnet for winter sports enthusiasts. Watch international artists carving huge blocks of snow at the Grindelwald Snow Festival . Enjoy mulled wine and twinkling lights at Christmas markets .
Lay of the land
Cities: Bern’s old town has nearly four miles of medieval shopping arcades. Stylish Zurich offers a flourishing food scene and vibrant nightlife. Cultural hotspot Basel is the gateway for Alpine skiing. Geneva is the cosmopolitan capital of high-end watchmaking. Head to Lugano for Mediterranean-style squares and sub-tropical gardens. Charming car-free Chur is Switzerland’s oldest city.
Central: Surrounded by mountains, lakeside Lucerne is famous for its 14th-century wooden bridge. Lake Zug is a picturesque spot for swimming and watersports in summer. Come winter, Engelberg-TITLIS ski resort offers some of the country’s best slopes—and the world’s first revolving cable car .
( Ice melt and a new cableway are reshaping the Eiger experience .)
Northeast: Head to family-friendly Thurgau to camp on the shores of Lake Constance and cycle or hike through its meadows, orchards, and forests. The magnificent Carolingian Abbey of St. Gall is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
East: Spot ibexes, marmots, and golden eagles in the Swiss National Park (Parc Naziunal Svizzer). Grisons ’ Alpine resorts offer abundant snow-filled fun, from snowboarding to horse-drawn sleigh rides. The exclusive St. Moritz is renowned for its world-class pistes, luxury shopping, and high-end restaurants.
South: For Mediterranean-style architecture and delicious gelato, head to Italian-speaking Ascona on Lake Maggiore. Hike through Valais’ vineyards and learn about local wines at the Musée du Vin . Take the cable car to the Eggishorn viewpoint for magnificent views of the Great Aletsch Glacier . High-altitude Alpine resorts, including Zermatt and Verbier , offer guaranteed snow.
West: Lausanne’s Olympic Museum houses the world’s largest archive of modern Olympic artifacts. The Vaud wine region is known for its diverse range of wines. Visit the peaceful town of Gruyères for its medieval hilltop castle—and its Gruyère cheese. The subalpine Jura Mountains straddle the Swiss-French border.
North: Use Zurich or Winterthur as a base to visit Europe’s largest waterfall. Art Basel, the prestigious contemporary art fair, features artists from five continents. The idyllic Aargau-Solothurn region is off the radar for international tourists: indulge in some me time at one of its numerous thermal baths.
Getting around
By train: Switzerland’s train network is as safe, clean, and efficient as you’d imagine. Mainline trains are primarily run by Swiss Federal Railways (SBB in German, CFF in French, and FFS in Italian), with local and regional routes covered by private operators. Tickets can be bought at bahn.com, but domestic journeys don’t need to be booked ahead, and most trains don’t require a reservation. Good-value rail passes can be purchased from the Switzerland Travel Centre .
By car: Switzerland’s motorway network includes the A1, which runs east-west from St. Margrethen to Geneva, and the north-south A2, which connects Basel with Chiasso. A vignette (road tax) is required to drive on the motorway. Winter tires are advisable during winter; snow chains may be necessary in Alpine regions. Driving in Switzerland is on the right.
By plane: Domestic flights are quick but expensive. Switzerland’s so small there’s no need to fly.
By bus: Low-cost Flixbus offers several domestic routes.
Know before you go
Hours: Except at airports and train and gas stations, most stores are closed on Sundays. Some stores, restaurants, and attractions also close on public holidays, but unlike other parts of Europe, Switzerland doesn’t shut down in August.
Languages: Switzerland has four national languages: German is the most widely spoken, followed by French, which is spoken in the west of the country. Italian is predominantly spoken in the southeast. Rumantsch is a Gallo-Romance language indigenous to Grisons in Switzerland’s east.
LGBTQ+: Same-sex marriage is legal in Switzerland. As of 2020, transgender and intersex Swiss citizens over 16 can adjust their legal name and gender marker by self-declaration at the civil registry office. Zurich, Geneva, Basel, Bern, and Lausanne are known for their LGBTQ+ scenes. Pride (known as Christopher Street Day, or CSD) events are held in major cities and some smaller towns. Popular queer-friendly ski destinations include Zermatt, Lenzerheide , and Arosa .
Tipping: It is customary—though not obligatory—to round the bill up or tip approximately 10 percent.
How to visit sustainably
Outdoors: Explore natural landscapes outside peak season and enjoy spring flowers or colorful fall foliage. Stick to hiking and cycling trails, keep noise to a minimum, and take your trash with you. Use designated campsites or check with local authorities before wild camping. Use SwitzerlandMobility to select hiking trails coordinated with public transport.
Shopping: Browse flea markets in Zurich, Basel, and Geneva for vintage clothing and jewelry, books, and antiques. Stores such as the Schweizer Heimatwerk in Bern and Kolorit in St. Gallen sell Swiss-made souvenirs. Visit small-scale cheese dairies and wineries, and purchase chocolate from independent makers such as Garçoa and Taucherli , who produce fully traceable, organic, fair-trade bars.
Dining: There are vegetarian and vegan restaurants aplenty—supposedly the world’s oldest vegetarian restaurant is in Zurich—and the Swisstainable logo highlights restaurants committed to sustainable practices. Regional, seasonal produce is standard. Switzerland’s drinking water is very safe and clean—bring a reusable bottle and refill it at any tap.
( Here’s how to spend a meat-free culinary weekend in Zurich .)
What to read
Swiss History in a Nutshell, by Grégoire Nappey. A concise summary of the most important historical events in Swiss history.
Heidi , by Johanna Spyri. This story of an orphan sent to live with her grandfather in the Alps is responsible for the romantic image of Switzerland held around the world today.
Swiss Watching: Inside the Land of Milk and Honey , by Diccon Bewes. This exploration of Switzerland goes beyond its stereotypes to prove there’s far more to the country than banking, skiing, chocolate, and cheese.

There is a reason this is Switzerland's most frequently visited museum of cultural history. Inside, you will immerse in the past and present through some 840,000 objects. From bronze Age bowls to silver knight’s armor, nowhere else will deliver such a rich and comprehensive insight into the Swiss.

Zentrum Paul Klee
The namesake of this museum is one of the 20th century's most important artists. Step into the space to quietly take in his artworks, you might find yourself lost in the famous cubism inspired 'Insula dulcamara' or colorful jigsaw that the German-Swiss genius was most famous for.

Swiss chocolate
Chocolate aficionados will find no shortage of pleasure in the smooth chocolate of Switzerland. The birthplace of Lindt, Toblerone, Mövenpick and more, a banquet of cocoa will be enjoyed here in the name of culture.
Best food in Switzerland
Baked potato, melted cheese and genuine chocolate. The culinary delights of Switzerland were designed with only the pleasure of taste in mind, and it's an indulgence Trafalgar is only too happy to share with you.
What to pack for Switzerland
Even in summer, layers are vital in Switzerland. Temperatures differ throughout through the country and can get particularly crisp in the higher mountains.
A good quality camera
In a place known for pinch me moments, it would be remiss to forget something more than just a smartphone to capture them all.
Swiss Francs
Switzerland may be at the core of Europe, but this country abandoned the Euro many years ago. Though you can still use them in some larger establishments, but it's better to arm yourself with plenty of Francs so you're never caught short.
A phrasebook
A phrasebook with the national languages of German, French and Italian is essential on a tour of Switzerland. If you really can’t spare the space, download them to your Google Translate app offline.
Walking shoes
If your trip is likely to see you traversing the dynamic landscapes of Switzerland, a pair of sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots should be on the packing list.
Pack for sustainable travel
Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and refillable toiletry bottles.

Switzerland travel guide
Combining expansive greenery, slick cities and bucketfuls of fresh air, Switzerland is a stylish tourist destination that offers countless outdoor adventures and contemporary urban breaks.
Switzerland’s Alpine vistas are so picture perfect, they appear to have been plucked from a postcard or the pages of a storybook. But these disarming landscapes are alive and kicking, as the myriad spots for skiing, hiking or mountain biking can attest. Ski resorts like Zermatt (home to the lofty Matterhorn), Verbier and celebrity-studded St Moritz provide everything from big, bad Olympic runs to encouragingly gentle novice slopes. And when the snow melts at low altitudes, the white-tipped mountain peaks remain against a backdrop of blue skies, providing a superb setting for summertime hiking.
The ancient capital Berne provides almost endless opportunities for sightseeing, shopping and traditional folk entertainment, while Zurich leads the way in art, design and nightlife, from opera and world-class theatre to stylish bars and nightclubs. Geneva is the sleekest and most upscale of Switzerland's cities, acting as home to a thriving community of expats, many of whom work for the numerous international organisations that are headquartered there.
Yet Switzerland’s cultural offerings don’t stop there. When it comes to contemporary art, polished Basel reigns supreme, with more than 40 museums and galleries nestled in this compact city. For a few days every year, Basel takes centre stage for the eminent Art Basel fair. French-flavoured Montreux also steals a moment in the cultural spotlight when it becomes the centre of focus for the jazz world during the Montreux Jazz Festival. Elsewhere, dotted around green foothills, are countless spruce towns and folkloric villages, where ancient farm culture survives and cattle still loiter amid flower-filled pastures.
Small, mountainous and wealthy, Switzerland is renowned for its enviable quality of life, with public services ticking along like clockwork. Come for the creamy, complex cheeses, smooth chocolates and luxury watches; stay for the exquisite culture, incredible scenery and sheer sense of fun.

Travel insurance
If you choose to travel, research your destinations and get appropriate travel insurance . Insurance should cover your itinerary, planned activities and expenses in an emergency.
About FCDO travel advice
The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office ( FCDO ) provides advice about risks of travel to help you make informed decisions. Find out more about FCDO travel advice .
Follow and contact FCDO travel on Twitter , Facebook and Instagram . You can also sign up to get email notifications when this advice is updated.
This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of the current rules for the most common types of travel.
The authorities in Switzerland set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Swiss Embassy in the UK .
COVID-19 rules
There are no COVID-19 testing or vaccination requirements for travellers entering Switzerland.
Passport validity requirements
Switzerland follows Schengen area rules . Your passport must:
- have a ‘date of issue’ less than 10 years before the date you arrive – if you renewed your passport before 1 October 2018, it may have a date of issue that is more than 10 years ago
- have an ‘expiry date’ at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave the Schengen area
Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.
You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.
Visa requirements
You can travel without a visa to the Schengen area , which includes Switzerland, for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This applies if you travel:
- as a tourist
- to visit family or friends
- to attend business meetings, cultural or sports events
- for short-term studies or training
At passport control, use the ‘All passports’ lane.
The requirements for working in Switzerland are different.
If you’re travelling to other Schengen countries as well, make sure your whole visit is within the 90-day limit. Visits to Schengen countries in the 180 days before you travel count towards your 90 days.
Make sure you get your passport stamped on entry and exit.
If you’re a visitor, border guards will look at your entry and exit stamps to check you have not overstayed the 90-day visa-free limit for the Schengen area.
If your passport is missing a stamp, show evidence of when and where you entered or left the Schengen area (for example, boarding passes or tickets) and ask the border guards to add the date and location in your passport.
At Swiss border control, you may also need to:
- show proof of your accommodation, for example, a hotel booking or proof of address if visiting your own property
- show proof of insurance for your trip
- show a return or onward ticket
- prove that you have enough money for your stay – around 100 Swiss francs a day
Staying longer than 90 days in a 180-day period
To stay longer, you must meet the Swiss government’s entry requirements. Check which type of visa or work permit you need with the Swiss Embassy in the UK .
If you are in Switzerland with a residence permit or long-stay visa, this does not count towards your 90-day visa-free limit.
See passport stamping if you live in Switzerland .
Vaccine requirements
At least 8 weeks before your trip, check the vaccinations and certificates you need in TravelHealthPro’s Switzerland guide .
Customs rules
There are strict rules about goods that you can take into and out of Switzerland . You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.
There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.
UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe abroad and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad .
Terrorism in Switzerland
Terrorist attacks in Switzerland cannot be ruled out.
There is a low rate of serious crime in Switzerland. However, there have been increased reports of petty theft, especially in larger cities, at Geneva airport and on trains to and from Geneva.
Protecting yourself and your belongings
Take sensible precautions to avoid mugging, bag-snatching and pickpocketing. Be particularly alert at airports, railway stations and in crowded areas. Do not leave your valuables unattended.
Laws and cultural differences
Face-covering ban.
In Ticino and St Gallen, it’s illegal to cover your face in public, including for tourists. Do not wear balaclavas, full veils or any other garment or mask that hides your face. You could get a fine of 100 to 10,000 Swiss francs if you do not comply.
Outdoor activities and adventure tourism
Hiking, mountaineering and extreme sports.
Adventure sports can be risky. British nationals in the Swiss Alps have been involved in accidents and have been hospitalised or died.
Check the company you are using is well-established and that your travel insurance covers any specific activity.
For sports activities like skiing, potholing and mountaineering, and for sports classed as particularly dangerous (for example, off-piste skiing, mountain biking, climbing, paragliding or BASE jumping), you could get into difficulty and need emergency rescue. Your insurance should include:
- mountain rescue services
- helicopter costs
- repatriation to your home country or transfer to neighbouring countries for treatment
See ‘Altitude sickness’ in Health .
Skiing and winter sports
Read FCDO advice about preparing for winter sports abroad . See the guidance on avalanches in ‘Extreme weather’.
Transport risks
Road travel.
If you are planning to drive in Switzerland, see information on driving abroad and read the rules of the road in the RAC’s Switzerland guide . The guide lists driving regulations and other legal requirements you need to be aware of.
Road users must observe Switzerland’s traffic laws , including speed limits, rules on alcohol intake and child security. Traffic police strictly enforce these regulations. Any serious breach can result in heavy fines or imprisonment.
You can use a UK photocard driving licence to drive in Switzerland. If you still have a paper driving licence, you may need to update it to a photocard licence or get the 1968 version of the international driving permit (IDP) as well.
Check if you need a UK sticker to drive your car outside the UK .
You must buy and display a vignette (sticker) to travel on Swiss motorways. You can buy one at most border crossings, petrol stations, post offices, by phone (+800 1002 0030) or buy a vignette online . If you do not have a vignette, you could get a large fine.
If you’re involved in a car accident, use the orange emergency phones to ask for help.
Road conditions
Roads outside urban areas are narrow and winding. Road conditions can deteriorate fast, even in summer, especially during heavy rainfall and snowfall at higher altitudes. Reduce your speed significantly to suit the conditions.
Alpine winters make driving difficult. Equip your car with winter tyres and snow-chains. Check road conditions before you depart. Carry water, food, warm clothing and medicines in your vehicle.
Find the latest information on road conditions using the Swiss government’s ‘Easy answers’ website .
Accessibility
The official Switzerland Tourism website has useful information for travellers in wheelchairs or with impaired mobility who are travelling in Switzerland.
Extreme weather and natural hazards
Find out what you can do to prepare for and respond to extreme weather and natural hazards .
Alpine conditions
Check weather forecasts and conditions and make sure you’re properly equipped for the worst-case scenario. Always carry a map, compass, GPS and fully charged mobile when travelling outside urban areas. Do not undertake any activity alone and consider hiring a guide for expert advice. Always leave copies of your itinerary with someone.
These alpine hazards exist throughout the year:
- avalanches and snowdrifts
- landslides and flooding
- glacial crevasses and hollows
- thunderstorms
- altitude sickness
- sun exposure
- sudden weather changes
Avalanches are a risk, particularly during heavy snow. Off-piste skiing is very dangerous due to the risk of avalanches. Follow safety instructions and warnings. Consider carrying search equipment. Avalanche beepers (receivers) are the most common rescue devices and when properly used, are the fastest way of locating an avalanche victim.
Conditions on roads in mountainous areas can quickly become difficult in winter. Carry water, food, warm clothing and medicines in your vehicle.
Check the latest avalanche risk at the Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology .
For more information, visit the official Switzerland Tourism website .
There is a heightened risk of wildfires in summer, especially after a period of drought.
Fires in mountainous areas can lead to rockfalls. Wildfires also cause travel disruption in wider areas.
Always check the bans on open fires for the area you’re visiting and:
- leave no litter
- make sure cigarette ends are properly extinguished
- use only designated concrete-based barbecue areas and douse coals before you leave
Causing a forest fire in a place where there’s a ban is illegal, even if unintentional, and can lead to a fine of up to 20,000 Swiss francs.
If you see a wildfire, call the fire department on 118.
Before you travel check that:
- your destination can provide the healthcare you may need
- you have appropriate travel insurance for local treatment or unexpected medical evacuation
This is particularly important if you have a health condition or are pregnant.
Emergency medical number
Dial 112 or 144 and ask for an ambulance.
Contact your insurance or medical assistance company quickly if you’re referred to a medical facility for treatment.
Vaccine recommendations and health risks
At least 8 weeks before your trip:
- check the latest vaccine recommendations for Switzerland
- see where to get vaccines and whether you have to pay on the NHS travel vaccinations page
See what health risks you’ll face in Switzerland , including:
- biting insects and ticks, especially between April and October
- tick-borne encephalitis
Altitude sickness
Altitude sickness is a risk in parts of Switzerland, including the ski and hiking areas around:
- Belalp-Blatten
- Engelberg-Titlis
- Lauchernalp
Read more about altitude sickness on TravelHealthPro .
The legal status and regulation of some medicines prescribed or bought in the UK can be different in other countries.
Read best practice when travelling with medicines on TravelHealthPro .
Healthcare in Switzerland
FCDO has a list of medical providers in Switzerland where some staff will speak English.
Health insurance cards
To get medically necessary state healthcare in Switzerland, you need a Global Health Insurance Card ( GHIC ) or a European Health Insurance Card ( EHIC ).
The NHS’s getting healthcare abroad webpage has details about:
- how to apply for a GHIC
- how to get temporary cover if you lose your card or it does not arrive in time
- who qualifies for a new EHIC instead of a GHIC
- what treatment counts as medically necessary
A GHIC or EHIC is not an alternative to travel insurance. You may have costs your GHIC or EHIC does not cover, including:
- changes to travel and accommodation bookings
- additional standard costs for treatment
- medical repatriation to the UK
- treatment that is ruled non-urgent
- private healthcare
- private clinics
There is also guidance on healthcare if you’re living in Switzerland .
Travel and mental health
Read FCDO guidance on travel and mental health . There is also mental health guidance on TravelHealthPro .

Travel Tips
Switzerland is a small landlocked country right in the heart of Europe bordered by Austria, France, Germany, Italy and Liechtenstein.
The landscape in Switzerland is mountainous with the Alps running right through the country and Europe’s highest peaks rising up to over 4,500 metres. Dotted through the mountains are thundering waterfalls, pristine lakes and green rolling pastures.
Switzerland has a moderate climate which brings warm summer days with cool nights and cold sunny winters with lots of snow during the ski season of December to March. Heavy snowfalls higher in the Alps is common for around nine months of the year.
Best Time to Visit
Switzerland is a year-round destination and you should plan your visit based on the types of activities you wish to enjoy.
June to September (summer) sees lots of sunshine and low rainfall making it the perfect time for hiking in the mountains and exploring the bigger cities. Despite Switzerland being known a cold weather place, there is an abundance of places to visit in Switzerland in the summer .
From November to March (winter) it is cold with plenty of snow, perfect for those wanting to take part in winter sports such as skiing. It is also a nice time of year to visit some of the smaller villages on the edge of the Alps because of the festive spirit and spectacular scenery.
It is always recommend to have a mixture of cash and bank/credit card with you when you travel anywhere in the world and this is no exception in Switzerland.
In Switzerland ATM’s are called Bankomats and are found in all major towns and cities across the country. As well, credit cards are widely accepted although some establishments such as small hotels and shops may only accept cash.
Getting There
Getting to Switzerland from surrounding European countries is simple, quick and cheap by bus or train. You can find out more about rail travel in Europe, including purchasing tickets, on the Rail Europe website; and about bus travel on the Eurolines website.
Switzerland is also well-connected by air with flights arriving in Zurich and other cities from all across Europe and the UK and parts of the US, Middle East and Asia. A flight from London to Zurich will take around one hour and forty minutes and a flight from New York to Zurich about eight hours.
I use and recommend Expedia for researching and booking flights all around the world.
Getting Around
Switzerland is a relatively small country so getting around it is pretty simple and cheap.
Europe’s excellent network of trains means that getting around Switzerland and in fact to/from other European countries is the most timely and cost-effective way to travel. All the major cities are connected to one another and you will find that most regional areas are well-connected to at least one of two of those major cities.
Because of Switzerland’s proximity to the Alps, some of the world’s most scenic train journeys can be taken through the country too making it more than just a means to get from point a to point b.
There are two classes on the trains, 1st and 2nd class, with the only real difference being slightly more leg space and room to move about in 1st class.
Most trains you can just show up at the train station and buy your ticket on the day while a few (mostly high-speed intercity trains) may need a seat reservation to be made in advance. This can be done either at any train station in the country or online through a ticketing agent in your home country. Here are a few that I recommend depending on where you are from:
- Rail Europe for residents in USA, Canada & Mexico.
- Rail Europe for residents in Australia, New Zealand, UK, Europe and other select parts of the world.
Eurolines operates services bus services around the country and they are a cheaper alternative to train travel but will take longer to get from a to b.
Because Switzerland is a small country, it is relatively easy to navigate if driving yourself.
You’ll be able to collect a hire car in Switzerland from all major airports and cities with most allowing you to pick up in one location and drop off in another, which makes sense if you’re road tripping around the country.
The roads in Switzerland are well maintained and easy to navigate because they are well signposted. During the winter months remember that weather conditions can change rapidly especially on roads going through the mountains. Be sure to obey all signs and drive with care in slippery conditions.
Where to Stay
Switzerland caters for everyone when it comes to accommodation. Here is a list of the types of accommodation you’ll find:
- Camping/Cabins – With Switzerland being a very outdoorsy country you’ll find lots of camp grounds that offer tent sites and basic cabins as low costs. And as with a lot of other European cities, you’ll also find large camp sites on the outskirts of big cities like Zurich that you can stay at cheaply and commute each day into the city for sightseeing.
- Hostels – You’ll find hostels in abundance in the Switzerland’s bigger cities and one or two in most other regional areas as well. The level of cleanliness in Switzerland and similar parts of Europe is well above average so you will likely find your room and shared bathroom to be super clean.
- B&B’s/Pensions – Small family run style accommodation like B&B’s or pensions can be found all over the country in big cities, small towns and popular rural locations. Accommodation is simple yet comfortable and the experience usually comes with friendly hosts and a home cooked breakfast each morning.
Get up to $45.00 AUD credit when you join Airbnb using this link .
- Hotels/Apartments – You will find both chain hotel/apartments brands and independent hotel/apartments to be in abundance in cities across the country. The good thing about this type of accommodation is in most cases you know what you are going to get, a clean, comfortable and modern room with a decent array of facilities in the room and on the property. Apartments are great for longer stays as they allow you a bit more space and the option to self cater.
I use and recommend Booking.com for researching and booking hostel, motel, hotel, apartment and resort accommodation around the world.
- Luxury Hotels & Resorts – Switzerland has its fair share of 5 star properties, some of which have been named in top lists of accommodation around the world. These will offer you brilliant service and a top location, sometime with incredible views of the surrounding area.
Switzerland has a variety of eating options that will suit all budgets and tastes. While you will find the majority of its restaurants and cafes serve local and European dishes, the country is expanding and becoming more multicultural with its cuisine offerings.
- Supermarkets/Markets – Save money and shop in supermarkets and local markets for snacks, picnic lunches and even ingredients to make a whole meal in your self catering accommodation.
- Fast Food / Take-away – Chain fast food stores are in all major centres of the country and along highways as well. If you’re looking for a cheap and tasty fast food meal, look to where the locals are, usually getting snacks and light meals from food trucks and stands on the side of the street.
- Cafes – The Swiss love cafes and some of the world’s most well know can be found in the country. Coffee, delicious sweets and tasty Swiss sandwiches will be on offer for sit down or takeaway.
- Restaurants – Portion sizes tend to be on the larger side in Switzerland, so eating out in restaurants can be really good value. Consider sharing a meal with a travel companion if you’re not too hungry to save money or sticking to one course.
- Fine Dining – Switzerland has it’s fair share of the worlds best restaurants so if it is fine dining experiences you are after then you won’t be disappointed.

Switzerland Tourism
Switzerland, nestled in the heart of Central Europe, is a captivating destination with a magnetic appeal to travelers from all corners of the globe. It is a land of stereotypes – expansive greenery, picturesque landscapes, chocolate, cheese, and watches. Switzerland’s lush green vistas are so perfect that they seem to be plucked out of a postcard. It truly is one of the most beautiful places on Earth – soaring Alpine mountains, medieval churches, a bucketful of fresh air, disarming landscapes, and green fields you would endlessly want to run through. It is one of those few places where everything runs on time, the chocolate is fantastic, the countryside is breathtaking, and everything is as perfect as a dream!
Yet, Switzerland is not merely a haven for nature lovers. Its culture is a tapestry woven with threads of different languages, traditions, and history. Charming villages and cities like Zurich, Geneva, Lucerne, and Bern invite exploration of their historical treasures, while year-round cultural events provide insight into the nation's rich heritage. For the adventurous at heart, Switzerland's menu includes daring experiences like canyoning, bungee jumping, and skydiving, ensuring an adrenaline rush that you won't soon forget. It is also perfect for relaxation as many of its serene locations offer spa retreats that rejuvenate the mind and body, set against a backdrop of picturesque landscapes.

- Swiss Post : Swiss Post offers a service called "PostBus," a convenient way to reach remote destinations and scenic spots.
- Swiss Travel Pass : Consider purchasing a Swiss Travel Pass(costing CHF 232 for 3 days, onwards), which offers unlimited travel on the Swiss Travel System network for a certain number of days. It covers trains, trams, buses, and even some boats, making it a cost-effective way to explore the country.
- Swiss Travel App : Download the Swiss Travel System app for real-time information on public transportation, schedules, and ticket booking.
- Swiss Family Card : If you're traveling with children under 16, get a Swiss Family Card, allowing them to travel for free with you on public transportation.

- Cable Cars and Gondolas : Many mountain destinations are accessed by cable cars and gondolas. If you plan to use them frequently, consider getting a Swiss Half Fare Card, which allows you to purchase tickets at half price.
- Swiss Museum Pass : If you're interested in visiting museums and attractions, look into the Swiss Museum Pass, which provides access to many cultural institutions throughout the country.
- Travel Light : Switzerland's excellent public transportation system makes it easy to get around without a car. Travel light to navigate trains and buses more comfortably.
- Hiking Permits : If you plan to hike in certain areas, check if you need a hiking permit, as some trails require them for safety and environmental protection.
- Keep Coins : Swiss coins are valuable and often needed for public restrooms and small purchases, so save them.
- Water : Tap water in Switzerland is safe to drink and of excellent quality. Refill your water bottle to save money and reduce plastic waste.
