This Rad Audi TT Safari Is the Perfect Blend of Style and Off-Road Performance

Built by Audi trainees, this go-anywhere TT is on display at this year’s Worthersee car meet.

In spite of a recent report that says Audi will no longer build the TT as it enters its next, electrified era, the German automaker appears to be having as much fun with the sports coupe as it can, while it can. Built as a one-off by company trainees and on display at this year's Wörthersee GTI car meet in Austria, the Audi TT Safari is what you get when you need to blend in at the Starbucks drive-thru in the morning but have to compete in the Dakar in the afternoon.

This special TT has been lifted and fitted with off-road tires, a new grille, massive fender flares, yellow rally lights, and a grey, white, and yellow livery that looks like it was inspired by Mattel . As if it wasn't already cartoonish enough, a pair of spare tires can be stored in the trunk, trophy truck-style. Who said the TT wasn't macho enough to take on Porsches?

The yellow details extend to the inside as well with a steering wheel and stitching all outfitted in the hue of a lemon. For reasons beyond my understanding, even the windshield has been tinted yellow, a modification that pretty much ensures that the TT Safari won't be road legal any time soon. 

Currently, Audi sells the TT as a warm TTS, hot TT RS, and as a drop-top TT Roadster. 

Hey Audi, given how cool the zombie apocalypse-ready TT Safari looks, perhaps a slightly muddy TT Allroad Quattro is worth looking into.

Anyone care to join the fun?

Last week we learned Audi plans to kill off its TT coupe and convertible in the relatively near future . Internal combustion will be out and full-on electrification will be in. Perhaps its future successor will still bear the TT nameplate, only with an all-electric powertrain. But let's not shed too many tears because the TT is still with us today. Enjoy it while we can. And perhaps one of the best ways to do so is with this wonderfully crazy one-off TT Safari, which is making its debut at the annual Wörthersee show in Austria.

Beginning with a regular TT coupe, a group of Audi trainees is responsible for the end result. That's right. Audi's next generation of employees have a wild side.

This TT has been lifted and given a set of off-road tires, huge fender flares, a completely restyled grille, yellow rally lights, and white, grey, and yellow paint job. Perhaps our favorite styling element is how the spare tires are stored: smack dab on the trunk. There was no point in trying to hide them. The interior is, for the most part, stock TT with the exception of lots of yellow trim. Heck, even the windshield has been given a yellow tint. Interesting design choice but we'll go along with it just because the rest of the car is so nuts.

Aside from some images posted to Facebook and Instagram , no details have been given as to what's under the hood, but how awesome would it be if the team used the 2.5-liter turbocharged TFSI five-cylinder from the TT RS . That'd be a total of nearly 400 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque.

Combined with the Quattro all-wheel drive system, we can totally see the Audi TT Safari dominating various off-road competitions, such as the Baja 1,000 or, perhaps, even the grueling Dakar Rally. And for the record, Audi has absolutely no intention of putting the TT Safari into production. Some things are just too good to be true. This is sadly one of them.

You’ll either love it or hate it. Either way, they made it.

Audi already killed off the TT for its next-gen vehicle line-up, so this is everything but a serious attempt to ramp up interest in the sports coupe. Instead, Audi let its trainees get practical and design and build this one-off off-road machine.

Audi TT Safari is inspired by the legendary Audi 200 Safari, which dominated 1987 WRC Safari Rally, winning 1st and 2nd place.

The rugged-looking TT will be making a debut at the 2019 GTI meetup at Wörthersee, Austria (29 May – 1 June), where thousands of VW enthusiasts flock up each year to share their passion.

The offroader is raised and equipped with a number of new body panels.

The front bumper is redesigned to incorporate a row of rally lights with additional lights integrated into the side vents down low. In the back, the dual exhaust is lifted higher and integrated into the rear bumper.

The rear spoiler, window, and trunk are removed. Instead, Audi’s trainees put a rack with two spare tires and a set of rails so you can still take some camping equipment with you in the bush.

A set of (impossible to miss) wheel arches cover the top of the tires, which stick halfway out of the original fenders.

Inside, the interior matches the paint job with yellow accents and stitching contrasting the grey base color. The steering wheel is borrowed from an R8 and also color-coded to match the style.

Under the radical body, you’ll find an RS powertrain. The turbocharged, 2.5-liter inline 5-cylinder engine produces 394 horsepower and 354 lbs-ft of torque. That’s handled by a 7-speed DSG transmission and delivered to all four wheels by Audi’s Quattro AWD system.

In combination with the massive 215/60R17 off-road tires, the TT Safari should really move some dirt and gravel under your butt.

We can’t hope this thing will last a full rally – there’s not even a roll cage in there. However, if there’s any Audi 200 DNA in it, it will at least perform reasonably on the trail. Fingers crossed for some offroad footage soon!

Audi TT Safari turns the sport coupe into an off-road monster

The Audi TT Safari isn't a toy, it's a real-life machine the brand showed off at this year's Wörthersee GTI car meet in Austria. Might we add, it looks awesome.

Social media posts from Audi about the car's debut, translated from German, claim the TT Safari boasts new fender flares to house massive off-road tires, a re-imagined grille ready for the unbeaten path, off-road lights in the grille, and a storage center located where the rear window would be for spare tires. Basically, the rear looks like Audi decided to carve out an area similar to a pickup truck—and that's really cool in our books.

The entire car is also wrapped in a black, yellow, white, and red livery that would look even better with some dirt and mud splashed all over it .

Inside, the same yellow cues can be found. The steering wheel, seats, accent stitching, and other bits of trim sport the same bright yellow hue. A closer look reveals a yellow-tinted windshield, purely for cosmetic effect. It's not very functional, but it does look pretty cool.

The fun concept has zero shot at making it past this full-scale concept stage. Audi recently confirmed the current TT would reach the end of the line soon. Instead, an electric spiritual successor of sorts will take its place in the future. It's not clear if the electric car will be another sports car or embody the TT in another way. Nevertheless, we dig the TT Safari concept. A lot.

Audi’s TT Safari is the perfect mix of style and off-road ability

With the looming death of the audi tt, audi told all its young designers to go nuts, and the tt safari was born.

W ith the sad death of the TT looming as Audi looks at electrification in the future, the German manufacturer told a group of its designer trainees to go nuts. The result was the incredible Audi TT Safari.

The Safari was built as a one-off for the Wörthersee GTI car meet in Austria, a huge car meet that celebrates the weird and wonderful creations of all the car manufacturers under the Volkswagen group.

This unique TT has been styled to look like no other car and, in Audi rally tradition, has the off-road ability to match.

The Safari was lifted dramatically and fitted with big off-road tyres that feature Quattro branding on the sidewalls. To fit these new wheels, the Safari has massive flared wheel arches, plus two spare tyres on the ‘boot’ of the car (Dakar trophy truck-style), just in case any of the others gets a puncture while cruising over whatever terrain is thrown at it.

There is a very distinct yellow theme with the TT Safari, with the brand new grille, the headlights and additional rally driving lights, and of course the very cool grey, white and yellow livery.

The yellowness isn’t limited to the exterior with the steering wheel and the seats all featuring yellow leather and stitching, as well as the windscreen, which has been tinted in yellow.

It would have been wonderful to have had a car in the TT range similar to this one along with the S and RS models, however it is nice to see Audi giving it one final chance to celebrate one of its unique creations over the last 20 years.

Audi’s TT Safari Is The Ultimate Off-Road Weapon

Sorry to squash your dreams up front, but Audi has confirmed that there is no way in hell this one-off Dakar-ready creation will be going into production.

In fact, it was actually the brainchild of a bunch of young Audi trainees ahead of this year’s Wörthersee motor show, after they were tasked with reinventing the iconic Audi TT.

What was once the rear window is now replaced with custom made storage for an additional two, full-sized spare wheels. Four high-powered spotlights have been integrated into the front bumper assembly just under a revised Singleframe grille, along with additional driving lights mounted on each side of the front air dam.

Side sills have been seriously beefed up for added protection and custom roof racks have been tailored to match the TT’s sweeping roofline.

This Audi TT Safari Is A Really Stylish Off-Roader

It has been reported early this year that the Audi TT convertible and coupe will be discontinued as the German automaker is planning to put an end to ICE-powered vehicles and fully electrify their entire portfolio. Maybe its successor will still be named the TT, but with a full-electric motor. However,  Audi   had also provided the TT fans with a marvellous opportunity to enjoy the vehicle while they can with the introduction of the TT Safari at the annual Wörthersee GTI meeting in Austria earlier this year.

The TT Safari gets a four-tone colour theme which is the combination of yellow, grey and white and red livery, which even can look more amazing with some mud and dirt scattered all over. The TT Safari has been raised and equipped with a completely redesigned grille which holds off-road lights and huge fender flares. On the side profile, the most outstanding feature is a new kit of off-road tyres. Having said that, the most interesting component is the spare tyres which have taken the place of the rear window. The rear area seems to have been carved out to make the TT Safari look like a small pickup truck.

The interior is also loaded with yellow elements. The steering wheel, the accent stitching, the seats, and other pieces of trims, also feature the same light yellow colour. If you look at car carefully, you'll also realize that the windshield has a yellow tint, which looks cool but is not very functional.

The TT Safari's cabin is also packed with yellow components.

The powertrain of the TT Safari hasn't be revealed, but it would be wonderful if it were powered by the 2.5-litre turbocharged TFSI five-cylinder borrowed from the TT RS, which can produce a maximum power of 400 PS and a peak torque of 480 Nm. The huge power/torque output and the AWD system even help the Audi TT Safari compete in events such as the Dakar Rally or the Baja 1,000.

Overall, the TT Safari is a perfect combination of style and off-road capabilities. Although the TT Safari has made its global debut, the German auto manufacturer has confirmed not to put the vehicle into production. Therefore, TT fans can only enjoy its beauty by looking at it without driving it in real condition.

Russian capital boasts latest virtual audi dealership..

The sixth Audi City has opened, with the Russian capital the latest international mega city to join Audi’s virtual world.

international city to welcome one of Audi’s new virtual dealerships. The digital showroom concept began only four years ago when Audi City London first opened its doors. Since then, Beijing, Berlin and most recently Istanbul and Paris have also seen these state-of-the-art virtual showrooms open, heralding a whole new concept in dealer, customer interaction.

This new facility in Moscow is located in the heart of the Russian city near Red Square, inside the hugely popular Nikol’skaya Plaza shopping mall. The two-story Audi City boasts three floor-to-ceiling powerwalls that allow customers to configure their dream Audi, creating a full-size display of their car as they select and inspect every minute detail of the vehicle they would like to purchase. As well as the cutting-edge vehicle configuration facilities, Audi City Moscow also boasts an Audi Sport area which specialises in the brand’s famous high-performance vehicles.

Two Customer Private Lounges with separate multi-touch tables and a multimedia wall are available for personal consultations and Audi City Moscow also offers space to relax in the stylish atmosphere of its VIP Room.

The idea behind these Audi Cities is to bring the entire Audi range to customers in high density urban and city areas where space does not necessarily allow large, traditional, vehicle displays. Through the use of Audi’s leading edge technology, customers are able to view not only the entire range, but also the entire range of options. Literally building the Audi of their dreams, from wheels to engine solutions, upholstery and ever the colour of stitching.

The technology used in the Audi Cities is also available in more traditional dealerships around the world and is continually updated to allow the most immersive engagement with the Audi product.

• Verdict Big power and awesome speed make it an alternative to the greats in this class, but it's still not the all-around champ.

What's New for 2018?

The RS is new to the TT lineup for 2018, injecting a dose of raucous power into the otherwise rather docile family. The RS distinguishes itself from lesser TTs with a honeycomb grille, beefy air intakes, a fixed rear wing, and large oval exhaust pipes, not to mention a crackling five-beat exhaust note from its five-cylinder engine.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The price of the 2018 Audi TT RS starts at $65,875.

The TT RS comes in just one version, and standard features include: adaptive dampers, a virtual cockpit in-dash infotainment display, and heated leather front seats with diamond-pattern stitching. We'd add the Black Optic package's 20-inch wheels and summer tires, exclusive black exterior accents, and sport exhaust system. The Technology package is pricey but brings blind-spot monitoring, Audi's navigation system (with integrated Google Maps view), and a 4G LTE mobile hotspot.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Likes: Blazing acceleration, supremely stable when carving up corners. Dislikes: Feels a little bloodless even during hard driving.

The TT RS's 400-hp 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine is unusual and alluring, and it makes a happy triumvirate with the standard Quattro all-wheel drive and snappy seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Passing power is astonishing: The seven-speed is more than willing to downshift as soon as you demand extra power, and the TT RS surges forward with such immediacy and force that you may think you've been sucked into a wormhole. Careful modulation of the throttle pedal transforms this athlete into a comfortable cruiser.

When equipped with its standard adaptive dampers, the TT RS feels stable and planted on the road—even when that road turns wickedly twisty—so even relatively inexperienced drivers can feel confident tossing it through corners at supralegal speeds. The version we tested felt rock solid all the way up to its limit, but that limit is significantly lower than those of the Corvette or Cayman. While an edgier suspension—sans adaptive dampers— is available, the setup makes it noticeably more difficult to feel when the TT RS is about to reach its cornering limits. Unless you plan on spending lots of time on a racetrack, we suggest passing on the Dynamic Plus package.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

Don't let the uncompromising performance fool you; the TT RS's turbo five-cylinder is quite efficient. Our test car hit 31 mpg on the highway during our real-world testing, beating its EPA highway rating of 29 mpg.

Interior, Infotainment, and Cargo

Likes: Comfortable and well-designed cabin, slick infotainment integration, excellent outward visibility. Dislikes: Lilliputian rear seats, relatively high driving position, desirable options are missing or cost extra.

Inside, leather seats with diamond stitching are standard, as is the eye-catching, well-integrated aluminum trim of the cabin's design. However, absent from the car's hefty price tag were ventilated front seats, a power-adjustable steering wheel, and a memory function for the driver and front-passenger seats. In our experience, the TT's rear seats are all but unusable—except as a place to throw gym bags or a briefcase.

Working with limited space, the TT RS's infotainment screen is not in the center of the dashboard but in the space traditionally occupied by the gauge cluster. This arrangement is attractive and easy to use, and, as in other Audis, is controlled by a rotary knob mounted on the center console. MMI functionality can be expanded with the optional navigation, 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability.

With the back row folded (as it should always rightly be—no kind person would subject a friend to the RS's back seat), we stuffed nine carry-on cases behind the front seats, making the TT RS by far the most useful vehicle in this class. As with many cars of this sort, unwieldy cargo will find no quarter—the cargo compartment is relatively large but not very tall, and the liftback rear opening is long but narrow.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The TT RS hasn't been crash-tested by either U.S. ratings agency—not an unusual omission for cars in this class. There's not much in the way of available driver-assistance tech for the TT RS, either. Still, this is a car designed with driving, not mindless cruising, in mind. The omissions don't bother us, but some shoppers may disagree. Key safety features include:

• Standard front and rear parking sensors
• Available blind-spot monitoring

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Audi's warranty coverage is roughly in line with most competitors, but the Corvette and the Jaguar F-type both offer more complimentary scheduled maintenance.

• Limited warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
• Powertrain warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
• Complimentary maintenance is covered for 1 year or 10,000 miles
