Hotel Amigo, a Rocco Forte Hotel

Originally, the 1522 building served as a prison, but later it underwent a big transformation and became Hotel Amigo, housing royalty and nobility in the bustling city during the Brussels World's Fair in 1958. Joining Rocco Forte Hotels in 2000, the space now hosts travelers from around the world, but the elegance and artistic flair of the hotel’s latter period remain. Wander over 17th-century flagstones, observe 18th-century Flemish tapestries and check out prints and original works by Belgian painter René Magritte.

Inside the beautiful Brussels hotel, you will find fine dining at Ristorante BoCConi, a lounge and bar that’s great for light bites and craft cocktails, a modern fitness center and amenities for kids of all ages. Hotel Amigo, a Rocco Forte Hotel features 154 rooms and 19 suites, each with clean lines and splashes of abstract art and color. And, because Hotel Amigo boasts an excellent location right in the historic city center, it's close to shops, cafés, museums and cultural sites.

• Stroll into Bar A for a refined cocktail and gander at the numerous autographed pictures of stars who have graced the parquet floors. Or stay for a light meal. Either way, this sophisticated nook should be on the list of things to do.
• Luxury awaits in each accommodation’s spacious bathroom. Carrara marble lines the floor and counters, and amenities include Forte Organics products, a deep soaking tub, a roomy shower, plush robes and slippers. Look for the iconic Tintin image by Belgian cartoonist Georges Remi, aka Hergé.
• Beautifully executed Italian dishes are found at Ristorante BoCConi, as envisioned by chef Fulvio Pierangelini. The cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil comes from the Rocco Forte brand's Verdura Resort in Sicily and the beef from Belgium’s famous meat shop, Atelier Dierendonck. Each delicate plate of food looks as artistic as the works hanging around the luxury hotel.
• The bright dining room of Ristorante BoCConi's isn't just for eating in; look around at the art. Olga Polizzi designed the space, and prints and plates by Italian artist Piero Fornasetti adorn the walls.
• Many of the rooms have unique personalities. One is decked out in images from the comic “The Adventures of Tintin,” and another with delicate green trees painted on the walls. All spaces feature prints and art from Belgian artists. Many accommodations also feature lovely views of the historic cobbled streets of Brussels from the quaint balconies.
• Belgian chocolate is famous for being creamy, rich, and beautifully executed, so sampling the sweet in Brussels is a must. Visit nearby candy boutiques by celebrated chocolate masters, including Laurent Gerbaud, Pierre Marcolini, Wittamer and Neuhaus.
• Locals take their comic artists seriously, as evidenced by the Comics Art Museum housed in an Art Nouveau building near the Grand Place. It's great for both kids and adults and showcases the art form well.
• Make sure to see the stunning Grand Place, a magnificent Gothic-spired city hall surrounded by rows of ornate facades and a charming, cobbled square. While the architecture alone is worth the visit, there's also a flower market and lively café scene, and the Manneken-Pis, the city's iconic bronze statue with more than 900 outfits, is close by.

Shoppers will want to hit rue Antoine Dansaert, a creative hub of independent boutiques and cutting-edge ateliers. This is the street to discover local designers and up-and-coming labels.

Debuting in 1847, Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert is one of Europe’s oldest shopping arcades. The sprawling Florentine Renaissance-style arcade houses everything from shops selling luxury jewelry to chocolate. Stroll through its Galerie de la Reine, or Queen’s Gallery.
