Matt Farah's Porsche Safari 911 Is The Perfect All-Arounder, Off-Roader

The Porsche Safari 911 had a new interior and Baja-inspired hardware installed. Now it’s Farah’s perfect car.

Los Angeles’s vast network of hills, valleys, and flatlands make it both a driver’s haven and nightmare. While stretches through the Angeles Forest and Malibu Canyon are a car enthusiasts paradise, long slugfests on the 405 as well as cracked streets throughout Downtown and Venice can make driving the average performance car a drag. That’s why YouTube star and world-renowned automotive journalist Matt Farah has chosen the Porsche Safari 911 as his perfect L.A. car.

Before The Safari

When Farah first moved across the United States from New York to Los Angeles he had his Raptor pick-up which he called a “gamechanger.” But when it came to the tight streets of the metropolis, the Baja-inspired truck was just too unwieldy--even for L.A. Everything changed, however, when he drove Leh Keen’s personal Safari 911 and he had a “light bulb moment.”

Leh Keen’s Safaris

Leh Keen is a two time Grand Am Rolex GT Champion--not to mention a lifelong Porsche fan. For the past five years, he has been designing and building Safari 911s. His Safari build are part of what is known as “The Keen Project”, and Leh is happy to either source a donor car for the customer (the base car must be a G-Body 911 from 1979 to 1989), or they find their own.

Farah’s Safari

Farah opted to find his own and settled on a 1987 3.2 Carrera in Cassis Red, which he opted to preserve with an Xpel car wrap, rather than repaint. He then shipped the car to Keen in Atlanta for a new interior and the fitment of Baja-inspired hardware. Now it’s Farah’s perfect car. “It is literally my daily driver,” explained the automotive journalist to Porsche. “I recently loaded three bushels of firewood behind the rear seats. I mean – it’s not meant for attacking the canyons or going to the racetrack, it’s meant for going to the shops, driving to my office, running errands and then taking to the dirt for some fun.”

2022 Porsche 911 Safari: The Ultimate Rally Inspired Driving

Porsche has an extensive history of releasing rally cars. They have an impressive reputation when it comes to road racing achievements. And with the new year just around the corner, the brand has something special coming out, the 911 Safari. This is an extension of the 911 lineup that was teased for a long time.

The 2022 Porsche 911 Safari is one of the most iconic sports cars in the Porsche brand lineup.

Is the Safari a Regular 911 model?

At this point, the Safari is an entirely new model and is not a facelifted or modified version of the current 911. This is even more reinforced because Porsche has already introduced the facelifted 911 models, and it would make no sense to launch a new special edition just a few years later.

Porsche is building a brand new 911 model, which will get a new name to reflect the fact that it has been built from the ground up with the intentions of being a rally-oriented car rather than just being a modified version of the current sports car. The Safari 911 borrows some physical characteristics of the prototype 911, but overall, it is a completely different model and gives off a completely different vibe.

If we are to believe the images we’ve seen so far, the 911 Safari must be a textbook rally car by design. The exterior has undergone a few transformations from the typical 911 model. The suspension, estimated to be around 2 inches, has been raised, making the car ride a bit higher; there’s also an underbody protection layer sheet that is flatter at the center.

The lower bumper is shortened to boost the car’s approach angle. Also to aid in ground clearance are the add-on wheel arches. The chunkier tires get wider as you approach the rear axles, thus improving handling and maneuvering, especially in sharp corners. The Safari assumes five-spoke rims that nicely fit in the sporty tires. Also conspicuous are the fender extensions trying to hide underneath the black masking.

The 911 Safari features a more extended range of travel compared to the other 911 models; active dumpers and softer springs adapt to road irregularities and unfriendly terrain by providing a superior mechanical grip.

One of the downsides in the Safari is the thicker sidewall that may make it a little more challenging to drive on harsh conditions like mud and snowy surfaces. We hope that additional off-roading drive modes will be available. The Porsche 911 Safari will feature; side sills and skid plates to protect the underside from damages. Small wing plastic extensions protect the wheel arches.

The 911 Safari will adopt most of the interior design and features of the regular 911. It will feature comfortable bucket sports seats, a standard feature in most rally cars. Therefore, these seats are lighter and stiffer, helping secure the driver and the front passenger. The cabin will offer more quality with soft surfaces and premium materials.

Also available are the instrument cluster and infotainment system with a few additional components related to the car. The Safari interior reflects a real sports car, and like any other car of its kind, it will have a more than simple design. It will also get a more aggressive steering wheel, a different instrument cluster, and a few extra buttons for the drivetrain and suspension. In addition to being a textbook modern rally car, the 2022 Porsche 911 Safari is of premium quality, as evidenced by its luxurious materials, finishes, and features.

The interior is also outfitted with Apple CarPlay , a climate control system, keyless entry, a touchscreen display screen, a navigation system, and much more. In terms of safety and driver assistance tools, the Safari features; LED headlights, forward collision mitigation, among other safety technologies.

Performance

The 2022-Porsche 911 Safari is powered by a 3.0L flat-six engine with an output of 443 horses and 390 Lb-Ft of torque. The horsepower can be increased with some tuning . The car will adopt an all-wheel layout system as the standard drivetrain.

This is to be expected in any rally-inspired car. Safari will likely be slightly more expensive than any other 911. This is all because Porsche is looking at taking the safari rally vehicle market by storm, and this Safari edition will be a special one of its kind.

What makes the 911 Safari a standout in the rally segment?

The 911 Safari is a real rally car with its powerful flat-six engine, snappy gearshifts, top speed, and acceleration power. It is also extreme in terms of off-road capabilities. If you are looking for a performance machine that is both a cruiser and a rally car, then the 911 Safari is the perfect car for you. 2023 Porsche 911 Safari looks production-ready in new spy photos

The high-riding 911 has been a long time coming.

911 safari interior

A prototype Porsche 911 Safari looking mighty close to production-ready has been spied undergoing winter testing. Porsche's high-riding, thick-sidewalled, all-wheel-drive 911 prototype has been testing for what feels like an eternity at this point, but judging from what we see here, that wait is just about over.

Strictly speaking, not much has changed since we first shared photos of a lifted 911 testing more than a year ago. The latest prototype retains the earlier tester's bumper-exit exhaust (not the quad-tip, under-bumper setup of the 911 Vision Safari Concept Porsche showed last year) and the vaguely whale-tail-like rear spoiler, so the fundamentals were clearly in place long before the sheetmetal was finalized.

Porsche 911 Safari prototype

Other departures from the Safari concept include fully molded fenders (rather than bolt-on flares) and a set of mesh wheels instead of the Fuchs style. The concept's fender-top vents are also absent. If you ask us, the real deal also looks like it has a bit more vertical "heft" to it, likely due to sheetmetal designed for the real world, where aerodynamic performance and drag are inescapable considerations in the design process.

Porsche has been threatening to deliver a lifted 911 based on the Carrera 4 (the basic all-wheel-drive variant, for the uninitiated) for about a decade now . Indeed, when the Vision Safari was shown, Porsche acknowledged that it has been testing such variants in 2012 on the same gravel roads it uses develop the Cayenne and Macan SUVs. Given the apparent completeness of this particular example, we expect to hear something more concrete about Porsche's plans before the year is out. Stay tuned.

Porsche 911 Vision Safari

Year: 2012      Devolopment stage: Drivable prototype

“We believe that there is hardly any other car brand that can combine sports car and off-road characteristics as credibly as Porsche,” says Chief Designer Michael Mauer. In the 1970s, the Porsche 911 had already proved its astonishing off-road capabilities in the legendary East African Safari Rally. The race took competitors on a journey covering almost 5,000 km across the Kenyan wilderness. In 1978, Porsche works drivers Björn Waldegård and Vic Preston Jr. were right up in the leading group in their Porsche 911 SC Safari, which boasted increased ground clearance, all-round reinforcement and some pretty characteristic Martini stripes. They proved that the air-cooled 911 is almost as unstoppable in the desert as it is on a motorway or a race track. The images of these Porsche 911 Safari cars covered in the red dust of the African savannah, splashing through water holes and mud pools will never be forgotten.

And that is why the Porsche design team decided to pay tribute to the legendary off-road sports car with a contemporary re-interpretation in 2012. The Porsche 911 Vision Safari was created on the basis of the 991 generation of the 911. With its raised suspension, reinforced wheel housings, massive bumpers and a spartan rally cockpit with race seats and roll cage, it fully reflects its historic rally predecessor. The designers even planned a special shelf mounted above a fan behind the seats – to cool down your crash helmet between especially hot stages.

The Porsche 911 Vision Safari completed its maiden drive “Out of Africa” on the gravel track at the Weissach test facility, where normally the Porsche Cayenne and Macan prove their off-road capability. Chief Designer Michael Mauer was the co-driver in the Safari 911, with its uniquely soft suspension setup, when it performed its first drift and remembers enthusiastically: “I have rarely had so much fun before!”

A Safari 911 Is What You Buy When Your Raptor Is Too Big

No, seriously.

Land vehicle, Vehicle, Car, Regularity rally, Sedan, Classic car, Coupé, Subcompact car, Family car,

Okay, so, a lifted 911 isn't the obvious solution to this problem, but it works. The Smoking Tire host and R&T contributor Matt Farah had a first-gen Raptor in Los Angeles and loved the way it ironed out any road imperfections. But have you ever tried to parallel park a Raptor? It's not impossible, but you'll circle the block a dozen times before you find a space large enough.

Farah wanted something with off-road suspension, but in a more reasonably sized package. So, he had sports-car racer Leh Keen build him a 911 that looks ready to tackle the Paris-Dakar. For the task at hand, it's perfect.

By modern standards, an air-cooled 911 is quite compact, which makes it perfect for any city. This 911's off-road suspension and BF Goodrich tires—the same A/T KOs used on the Raptor—mean you can tackle speed bumps at full throttle. And when Farah takes a shortcut on a dirt path, it really starts to make sense.

New 2024 Porsche 911 Safari: Speculation and Overview

2024 porsche 911 safari: speculation and overview.

2024 Porsche 911 Safari – Porsche is a car brand with several models, one of which is the 911. The 2022 Porsche 911 has many variants: Carrera, Targa, Turbo, and others. However, we found that it used to be a Porsche 911 with a Safari variant. What is it like? Will they make it again?

We found that the Porsche 911 Safari existed in the 1900s, but we don’t know when the car was last launched. However, we hope that Porsche will relaunch a car with that name. To be more precise, we expect 2024 is time for the coming 2024 Porsche 911 Safari, and that’s expected to be pretty big news. On this occasion, we will speculate about the car that is expected to be present.

2024 Porsche 911 Safari

Exterior Design

In exterior design, it doesn’t look like it’s expected to differ much from the other 911s. However, it looks like a classic style with 4 headlights like the Safari, which used to be a good choice. This will be a significant difference compared to other Porsche 911. However, the style must be adjusted to look modern and fit today. Maybe that’s what we expected.

Interior Design

The car’s interior is also not expected to be much different from the others. With an attractive and sophisticated design and equipped with the latest features that support operations. The infotainment screen measures 11 inches, with various other features. The chairs used have a sporty design and are made of high-quality materials. It looks like 2 seats are enough, and there may be some variants with 4 seats.

Porsche Panamera 2024 Facelift

Engine and Performance

We cover this section based on the 2022 911 Carrera GTS. The engine used is 3.0L with 4 cylinders. It can produce 473 hp @ 6,500 rpm, and 420 lb-ft of torque @ 2,300 rpm. Those are the standard specs we expect for this car. Even so, it is hoped that there will be a higher variant to make it more interesting, and people will have more variants to choose from.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The infotainment feature is essential for every car, including the 2024 Porsche 911 Safari. It looks like an 11-inch infotainment screen is enough. Of course, it can be connected to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Next are Bluetooth, USB port, Porsche Communication Management (PCM), and others. Just expect the latest and most advanced features of its time so that it can satisfy users.

As a car expected to come in 2024, we hope the 911 Safari is equipped with interesting features. That way, people will be more interested in buying it. The standard features that every Porsche 911 has, of course, must exist. Other features that make this car more attractive are also expected. For a list of standard 911 features, please search for more information.

2024 Porsche 911 Safari Pricing and Release Date

The cheapest 2022 Porsche 911, according to edmunds.com, is around $100,000. We think $135,000 is a fair price for the cheapest variant of the Porsche 911 Safari. That’s just my speculation. At the same time, some people may think that it is cheaper or more expensive than that. As for the release date, we think the 2nd quarter of 2024 is a good time.

The 2023 Porsche 911 Safari Is Looking Better Than Ever

And quick too.

911 Carrera

Porsche might think that its dazzling new Vision Gran Turismo will steal the headlines, but fans seem to be intoxicated by an ugly duckling that's been lapping the Nurburgring for the last couple of years. Back in October of 2020, we reported a sighting of what looked to be a lifted, Safari version of the Porsche 911 . Porsche has a long history of rally racing the 911 , and while there are many modern interpretations of the Safari 911 rolling around these days, none of them are official. Until now. The 911 Safari has been in testing for a good while now, and it seems as if Porsche is putting the final touches on this high-riding sports car. In this latest v, we get to see the 2023 Porsche 911 Safari Prototype testing around the Nürburgring wearing no camouflage, and it looks great.

The last time we reported on this vehicle, Porsche had increased the ride height and bolstered the fenders, giving it a very purposeful, rally-ready look. The latest video shows a car that hasn't changed much. The ride height is still comically high, and the fenders are still angry. Going around some of the fast sweeping corners the Ring is famous for, the 911 Safari still manages to look planted and confident, most likely due to the fact that it rides on the Porsche 911 4S' all-wheel-drive system. We admire Porsche for continuing development on this utterly unique car, even though demand for such a vehicle is bound to be low.

When the 911 Safari finally makes an official appearance, we expect it to feature in every YouTuber's videos for at least a couple of months. Expect big jumps, drift races, and probably a few proper rally car conversions. This thing promises to haul ass too: it is expected that the 911 Safari will be powered by Porsche's excellent 3.0-liter twin-turbo flat-six which produces 443 horsepower (and a lot more with some tuning). This is one of the coolest things Porsche has done in a long time, and that's coming from a brand that does rad stuff all the time. We hope to get some more solid info before the year is out.
