10 Best Grand Canyon Helicopter Tours of 2024

Home | Travel | North America | United States | Arizona | Grand Canyon | 10 Best Grand Canyon Helicopter Tours of 2024

Taking a Grand Canyon helicopter tour is an experience you will never forget. After all, observing this natural wonder from a birds-eye view is far superior to seeing it from ground level.

In fact, I first saw the Grand Canyon from one of the overlooks, and I was a bit disappointed. The ridge was full of people, so I had to battle the crowds, and it was a cloudy day, so the views weren’t that great. However, when I took a Grand Canyon air tour , it was completely different and I got to see the full magnitude of the canyon, its crevasses, and the surrounding landmasses.

Over the years, we’ve taken several helicopter tours over the Grand Canyon , but the first one, the one we took during our 10-day West Coast road trip , will be always special so I can’t recommend this ride enough. We’ve also taken this tour and this flight from Las Vegas, and now that we live in Vegas, we’re excited to see even more.

If you’re still not sure which is the best Grand Canyon helicopter tour for you, I’ll share my top recommendations, which range in price, duration, and route. You can even depart from Grand Canyon Airport, so I’m sure you’ll find an excursion that suits your trip.

Also, did you know that you can take a Grand Canyon helicopter landing tour below the rim? This is an ideal option if you want to avoid the strenuous hike to the bottom or if you want to add a Colorado River cruise to your tour.

Other Grand Canyon helicopter tour companies

As you can imagine, flying over the Grand Canyon is quite an experience, so it’s not surprising that there are several helicopter tour companies in the area:

  • Papillon Grand Canyon Helicopters : Papillon has been in business for over 50 years and is the largest Grand Canyon helicopter tour company.  We found them to have a variety of tour options from Las Vegas, the South Rim, and Grand Canyon West for every budget. You can read our full Papillon Helicopters review for more info.
  • Maverick : Maverick is another well-known company that, like Papillon, uses EcoStar helicopters for tours over the Grand Canyon and Las Vegas.
  • Sundance : Sundance has been in business since 1985 and offers Grand Canyon helicopter tours out of Las Vegas.
  • Vegas Tours : This company also operates out of Las Vegas and provides scenic flying tours of the West and South Rims.

After flying over the Grand Canyon many times, I can tell you that we’ve had the best experiences with Papillon. This company always does a great job, offering us beautiful views, safe trips, and friendly assistance.

My experience taking a Grand Canyon helicopter ride

If I had to choose one word to describe my experience flying over the Grand Canyon , it would be “magical.”

The view from the ground-level outlooks didn’t live up to my expectations at all, and I couldn’t capture the true size and majesty of the canyon. Indeed, it all depends on the time of day and the lighting conditions, but I would still 100% recommend taking a Grand Canyon helicopter tour to see this place from above. Not only will you see what a marvel the Grand Canyon is, but you won’t have to deal with all the crowds on the ground!

Aerial view of the Grand Canyon, the grand canyon helicopter tour

Before booking with Papillon, I read plenty of Grand Canyon helicopter tour reviews to make the best choice for my schedule, budget, and preferences. I also made sure to buy the best travel insurance for the USA for any unexpected situations.

We ended up taking the South Rim Airplane Tour because it was one of the most affordable options. Plus, we wanted a tour that left from the South Rim (to fly within the National Park limits), as well as an airplane so we could go higher and explore more remote locations. The tour was the perfect choice for us, and we could appreciate the canyon’s full scope.

Over the years, we ended up taking that trip again, as well as the Golden Eagle Helicopter Tour and the Grand Celebration Tour . If you want to take a Grand Canyon helicopter tour from Las Vegas , I recommend the latter excursion since it does a below-the-rim landing. In addition, it’s a complete aerial tour of the Grand Canyon ’s West Rim, and it’s one of my favorite tours from Las Vegas .

My Grand Canyon helicopter tour review

As someone who has flown over the Grand Canyon quite a bit, I have some tips to ensure you have the best trip possible:

  • First, it’s better to book your flight for early in the morning or just before sunset so you can get the best views.
  • Second, check the weather forecast since the tour operator may cancel your trip if the conditions aren’t right.
  • Lastly, limit what you eat about two hours before the tour. My mum learned this the hard way when she got sick during our ride. If you’re prone to dizziness, take some medication beforehand.

That said, the view from a Grand Canyon helicopter is unmatched, and as long as you follow my advice, you should be fine. Even though we’ve taken several Grand Canyon helicopter tours , we’re always amazed by the incredible landmasses, the ancient stone walls, the undulating Colorado River, and the stunning gorges and plateaus.

Grand Canyon helicopter tour FAQs

If you’re still not sure which Grand Canyon helicopter tour to choose, or you have some concerns, here are the answers to some common questions. Of course, feel free to leave us a comment if you have any other questions. We’ll be happy to help!

Which is better: a Grand Canyon helicopter tour or an airplane tour?

When you’re choosing between a Grand Canyon helicopter ride or an airplane tour, consider that airplanes can fly further and higher. So, a Grand Canyon airplane tour will be better if you want to focus on the depth and vastness of the canyon, or if you’re interested in landscape photography.

That said, Grand Canyon helicopter tours are awesome, especially if you want closer views of the canyon walls and gorges. Also, if you want to descend below the rim, remember that you can only do that with a helicopter.

Is it better to take a Grand Canyon helicopter tour from the South Rim or West Rim?

Grand Canyon National Park consists of the South, North, and East Rims, and is managed by the U.S. National Park Service. However, the West Rim is maintained by the Hualapai Tribe, and so, it is a private tourist attraction.

In general, you’ll get the best views with a helicopter tour over the Grand Canyon South Rim . Since below-the-rim landings aren’t allowed in this part of the park, the natural environment is better protected here.

On the other hand, the West Rim is quite popular, and this is the only place where you can take a Grand Canyon helicopter landing tour to explore the canyon floor. Moreover, if you’re interested in other attractions like boat rides, they’re available at Grand Canyon West. Finally, the West Rim is also closer to Las Vegas (2.5 hours versus 4 hours to the South Rim), so take that into account.

When is the best time for a Grand Canyon helicopter tour?

The best time for a Grand Canyon helicopter tour is early morning when the desert and the canyon’s rock formations have an intense reddish glow. There will also be less turbulence in the morning, and it won’t be as hot or hazy outside.

As an alternative, you can take a Grand Canyon helicopter tour at sunset . You’ll get some very nice views, and the temperatures will be cooler than they are during the day.

How much does a Grand Canyon helicopter tour cost?

The price of a Grand Canyon helicopter tour can be as low as $169 per person. However, the cost depends on factors like the duration of the flight, the aircraft, and any extra activities you do during the tour, so some excursions exceed $1,000.

Are there cheap Grand Canyon helicopter tours?

Flying over the Grand Canyon is a memorable and worthwhile experience, so if you have a limited budget, I suggest an airplane tour. This is a cheaper option, but the views are just as beautiful. You can see how we organized our budget to travel along the West Coast in 10 days to see how we managed to do a Grand Canyon airplane tour without splashing out.

Should I book my Grand Canyon helicopter tour in advance?

Yes! If you’re going to be traveling in the summer, I recommend booking your Grand Canyon helicopter ride at least one month in advance. We traveled in August and had to carefully plan our itinerary to get to the Grand Canyon on the particular day that had an available spot.

What should I bring on a Grand Canyon helicopter tour?

It’s a good idea to wear long sleeves and pants, as well as comfortable closed-toe shoes. Also, you’ll want to protect yourself from the strong desert sun with sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat. Of course, don’t forget to bring your camera!

Is a Grand Canyon helicopter tour worth it?

Yes! There is nothing quite like soaring over such a massive natural structure. Flying over the Grand Canyon in a helicopter with panoramic windows helps you see all the crevasses, gorges, and walls of the canyon. Plus, the views are much better than they are from the ground, where people are often crowding the outlooks.

I hope you feel better prepared to find the best Grand Canyon helicopter tour for your budget, preferences, and travel dates. If you have any other questions, leave them below, and I’ll be happy to answer them.

Enjoy your Grand Canyon flight !

Hi Chris, This part of the country is my absolute favorite. I think you’ll like our guide on taking a road trip from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon ; it’ll give you some ideas for your itinerary!

Hello! Thank you for posting and sharing your experience. On the Helicopter and/or Airplane tour, is the ‘Seat Assignment’ a concern? My family (wife, 3 kids and I) had the Heli [tour] experience at the Canadian Rocky Mountain. One kid sat in the front with the Pilot. The rest sat in the back BUT, we’re face-2-face: 2 facing front, 2 facing back. The ones facing back did NOT get to see what the ‘frontal’ passengers did, bad experience. This time, it’ll be just my wife and I. We prefer Heli tour. What is your suggestion. Thank you in advanced. Unggit & Piyanut – Buffalo, NY

At the airplane tours, everyone gets the same stunning views. On the helicopter tour, you can pay to have a front seat next to the pilot. We paid for that in our last helicopter tour to Grand Canyon from Las Vegas last month and it was worthy!

But I think you will enjoy the tour even if you don’t get that seat since no one in the helicopter is facing back. Are you taking the tour from the Grand Canyon South Rim terminal or from Las Vegas? I can recommend you which is the one I have like the most so far!

' src=

Best experience in my life. I took the helicopter tour from Grand Canyon South Rim. Next time I will do the landing tour from West Rim.

' src=

I am planning to do the landing tour too. I hope next month! But I will do it from Las Vegas!

' src=

Thank you very much for recommend those tours. I spent only one day in Las Vegas and decided to take the Grand Celebration tour thanks to your post. It was amazing. I am so glad I found you blog!

Hi Sylviana,

That is awesome! If you don’t have too much time is by far the best tour to Grand Canyon by helicopter.

Recent travelers say a Grand Canyon helicopter tour is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. People say the views are amazing and that the unique angle of the Grand Canyon is breathtaking. Several also say the trained pilots are knowledgeable and have helped ease their fears about flying.

Most Grand Canyon helicopter tours are considered safe, with vetted pilots who meet approvals from the Federal Aviation Administration in maintenance, training and aircraft safety. Pilots are also required to fly a certain number of hours before leading a helicopter tour. However, keep in mind there are risks involved in any adventure activity you choose to participate in, and travel insurance with medical protections can be a valuable investment in this scenario.

Papillon Grand Canyon South Rim Helicopter Tours

Papillon South Rim helicopter tours depart from a private terminal just outside the park itself, built with guest experience in mind. Easily able to accommodate 1,000 passengers a day, this facility features an expansive glass staging area -where visitors have a 180-degree view of the arriving and departing aircraft.

The South Rim Terminal is located just 3 miles outside the Grand Canyon National Park and serves as a launch point for our North Canyon Tour , Imperial Air Tour , South Rim Airplane Tour and Canyon Smooth Water Bus Trip . When it comes to exploring the Grand Canyon South Rim, there's no better place to start your adventure.

The Grand Canyon South Rim

Located in northern Arizona , t he Grand Canyon South Rim is one of the canyon's most popular destinations. Located in the Kaibab National Forest, this area offers a different experience with every season. Wildflowers bloom along the Kaibab Plateau in the spring, aspen leaves turn golden yellow in the fall, and canyon walls become lightly powdered in snow in the winter. Unlike other rims, the South Rim is open year round, so there is never a bad time to visit.

The South Rim is the most developed out of the rim areas, which means there are more services available here than most parts of the canyon. It also means the area can be prone to crowds. Peak season for the South Rim is in the summer, May through September. While the summer offers some of the best weather for the area, other seasons bring less of a crowd and offer a more private experience. No matter what season you plan to visit, you'll want to make sure you plan your trip well in advance. For more information check out our Grand Canyon National Park Guide.

Must-See Highlights of the South Rim Grand Canyon

The South Rim of the Grand Canyon offers an array of breathtaking sights and highlights to explore. One of the must-see spots is Yaki Point , which can be reached conveniently via the shuttle buses and provides stunning panoramic views of the canyon, making it a favorite among photography enthusiasts. Another highlight is the scenic Desert View Drive , which takes you to the East Entrance and offers various overlooks such as the historic Watchtower.

The Visitor Center serves as an excellent starting point, providing valuable information and exhibits that guide visitors to captivating hiking trails such as the renowned Bright Angel Trail and the scenic Rim Trail . Mather Point and Hermit Road are additional must-see areas that showcase the grandeur of the South Rim. Mather Point provides an excellent introduction to the stunning beauty of the South Rim and is a great spot to witness the ever-changing colors of the canyon, especially during sunrise and sunset, when the golden hues paint the landscape in a mesmerizing display. Hermit Road is a scenic route that offers several designated viewpoints along its stretch. This road is closed to private vehicles during the peak tourist season, making it a peaceful and enjoyable experience.

Visitors can hop on one of the shuttle buses and explore the different overlooks, each providing a unique perspective of the canyon. If you plan to visit the South Rim, please note that the National Park Service manages this section of the Grand Canyon and charges entrance fees to ensure the preservation and maintenance of this natural wonder.

Took this tour and it was amazing! The views from the sky are beautiful. I will take you to many areas not accessible by car or hike. Tour was on time. Pilot was knowledgeable, friendly and professional. Highly recommend!

Josh is an amazing pilot with a ton of knowledge and experience. We truly had the time of our lives. An amazingly unforgettable experience and will definitely do it again if we return to Sedona.

The pilot was very good describing everything we went by. It was very enjoyable and beautiful. Would definitely do it again.

My family and I loved the Apex Secret Wilderness helicopter tour. A few days earlier we had taken one of their shorter tours and wanted to see more, so we booked a longer trip. We saw a huge elk herd on top of a mesa and many cliff dwelling ruins, as well as the beautiful red rock vistas around Sedona. Our pilot was wonderful.

Very nice people and great service. The pilot gave us an amazing tour. The cathedral looks stunning from the air.

helicopter tours arizona

We did the Grand canyon to monument valley with ground tour trip. Very good, scenic flight over the Grand canyon was breathtaking, trip in MV was OK, saw all the main sights, would definitely recommend as a treat.

Pilot and Co pilot were very professional. Seeing Sedona from up and afterwards the Grand Canyon was amazing and I deeply think that it is one of a lifetime experience not to be missed.

This trip was everything we could have hoped for and more! The entire staff was professional, courteous, and most importantly very good at what they do! Our pilot flew us up, took us around to the various scheduled activities, and made everything go smoothly.

Westwind gave me everything I had hoped for...An overall informative/view of the Grand Canyon. We could never have visited the Canyon in one day like Westwind provided for us both on the ground and in the air. Excellent customer service too. Hope we can bring the rest of the family in the future.

We took the West rim tour with the helicopter and boat rides. The whole experience, from booking to end of tour, was easy. The ladies in the office (Val and Gayle) are friendly and enthusiastic. Snacks and water were provided for our trip. Steven was our pilot and helped make the day perfect.

What a delight. The flight form Phoenix to the Grand Canyon via Sedona was fascinating. Having spent a few days at south rim it was great to get a different perspective. Then on the the marvels of Monument Valley - Hard to describe and do justice. A Navajo tac lunch and then a flight back rounded out a great day.

15 Oregon Republican lawmakers and candidates to tour Arizona-Mexico border, talk immigration, fentanyl surge

Migrant surge at southern border, late December 2023

Senator Tim Knopp: With M. 110 fixes in works, 'we have to go after the supply'

SALEM, Ore. (KTVZ) -- Fifteen Oregon Republican state senators, representatives and candidates will tour the U.S.-Mexico border in Arizona next week with the Border Security Alliance and meet with local officials to discuss issues related to human trafficking and the surge in shipments of deadly fentanyl.

Here's Thursday's announcement, in full:

Though Oregon is not a border state, it still faces the consequences of America’s wide-open southern border. Mass quantities of dangerous cartel drugs are being smuggled across the border and into streets across America. Human traffickers have expedited the flow of migrants, including women and unaccompanied minors, who are vulnerable to sexual exploitation. If the Biden Administration won’t fix this crisis, we must do what we can as a state.

To better understand issues surrounding the southern border and how state lawmakers can minimize the widespread effects of mass illegal immigration, a group of Oregon Republican leaders will tour the border with Border Security Alliance and engage in discussions with Arizona officials.

“We know the overwhelming supply of fentanyl and other hard drugs on Oregon’s streets are largely coming across the southern border. Now that the Legislature has effectively ended the nationwide movement to decriminalize and destigmatize drugs by reversing much of Measure 110, we have to go after the supply,” said Senator Tim Knopp. “I know we are all looking forward to learning more about how we can do that on this important trip.”

“We are eager to welcome Oregon Republicans as they witness with their own eyes the devastation Biden’s immigration policies have had on Arizona. Every state is a border state now. I look forward to what this trip can provide them as states like Oregon grapple with this crisis,” said Chairman of the Border Security Alliance and former Chair of the Arizona Republican Party Jonathan Lines, who will lead the tour.

Attending the tour on April 29th:

Senator Tim Knopp, SD-27 Senator Fred Girod, SD-9 Representative Vikki Breese-Iverson, HD-59 Senator David Brock Smith, SD-1 Senator Kim Thatcher, SD-11 Representative Greg Smith, HD-57 Representative Court Boice, HD-1 Representative Virgil Osborne, HD-2 Representative Boomer Wright, HD-9 Representative Lucetta Elmer, HD-24 Representative Christine Goodwin, HD-4, Candidate SD-2 Representative Dwayne Yunker, HD-3 Bruce Starr, Candidate SD-8 Michael Summers, Candidate SD-27 Keri Lopez, Candidate HD-53

“The crisis at the southern border represents everything wrong with mainstream Democrat policies. Here in Oregon, Republicans are choosing to be a proactive part of the solution. We cannot merely recriminalize drugs and expect the drug addiction and overdose crisis to go away. Oregon Democrats think they can bury their heads in the sand and let it be someone else’s problem, but we disagree,” said Representative Breese-Iverson.
