The Bourbon Babe - News, reviews and more about Kentucky's native spirit.

Why is this called a ‘Moscow Mule’?

Kentucky Mule

It was off to the Internet, where I found that, as in the case of many origin stories, there was more than one. And none of them really explained the Mule reference; the best I can tell you is that the ginger beer gives the drink a kick like a mule, and (more probably) it was alliterative. At any rate, here is my favorite version, written for Liquor.com by famed author and mixologist Gary Regan:

“In 1947, Edwin H. Land invented the Polaroid Land Camera, and instant photography was born.

“John G. Martin, an executive at the Heublein drinks company, availed himself of one of Land’s handy-dandy devices, and soon he was bar-crawling, taking pictures of bartenders holding a bottle of the firm’s newly acquired Smirnoff Vodka in one hand and a copper Moscow Mule mug in the other.

“The bartender got a copy for his troubles, and Martin took a second shot to show the next joint what the competition was selling. Martin was a true marketing genius.

“The Moscow Mule had been invented circa 1941, and although Martin often said that he and Jack Morgan, owner of the Los Angeles British pub Cock ‘n’ Bull*, created the drink, such might not actually be the case. According to a 2007 article in the Wall Street Journal penned by the reliable Eric Felton, the Cock ‘n’ Bull’s head bartender Wes Price also laid claim to the recipe. And I’m inclined to believe a bartender over a marketer…

“What we do know for certain is that Martin had bought the rights to Smirnoff for Heublein in the late 1930s, but he was having a hard time convincing Americans to drink the stuff. Vodka wasn’t very popular in the States back then. And it’s well-known that Morgan had ordered far too much ginger beer for his bar and was also having trouble getting rid of it.

“Ted ‘Dr. Cocktail’ Haigh, in his book Vintage Spirits and Forgotten Cocktails , adds another relevant fact to the story: Morgan apparently had a girlfriend who owned a company that made copper products, so the copper Moscow Mule mugs were relatively easy to come by for him.

“Though the Moscow Mule might not be a cocktailian masterpiece, it can be (provided you use a good, spicy ginger beer) a refreshing quaff, indeed. And according to Price, it entered the world in a very honest way: ‘I just wanted to clean out the basement,’ he said.”

* The Cock ‘n’ Bull pub no longer exists, but you can still buy Cock’n Bull ginger beer, which is what I use to make my Kentucky Mules.

Top 7 whiskey mule recipes.

Top 7 Whiskey Mule Recipes

Jun 09, 2020

In this post, we reveal the top 7 ways to make the delicious and unique Whiskey Mule, a classic twist on the legendary Moscow Mule. Let's get started!

Introduction

The Whiskey Mule is a variation of the Moscow Mule, a cocktail drink that was invented in 1941 in the United States. The difference between the two is that while the classic Moscow Mule uses vodka, the choice alcohol in a Whiskey Mule is whiskey. A Whiskey Mule is known by many names, depending on the type of whiskey used to make it. Some popular names include Kentucky Mule and Whiskey Ginger.

The History of the Whiskey Mule

two clear Mason jar glass filled with yellow beverage ice mint leaves and citrus slice

Like many other variations of the Moscow Mule, the Whiskey Mule came into existence when spirit lovers wanted a twist on the original recipe. They exchanged vodka with whiskey to create this drink. In other mule variations, vodka can be replaced with rum, gin, or other different types of alcohol.

If you’re a fan of whiskey, then this is the mule for you. It’s quite easy to make, with just three basic ingredients—ginger beer or ale, whiskey, and lime juice. Ginger beer is the constant ingredient in any mule, and how you use it will affect the taste of your cocktail. You can use ginger ale instead of ginger beer when you want a milder and sweeter flavor profile.

The Whiskey Mule is a drink for any day and every season and is ideal for parties since it's delicious and absolutely easy to make. If you can, use freshly squeezed lime juice instead of store-bought varieties for a vibrant and natural flavor.

Below are some of the whiskeys you can use to make the Whiskey Mule. The difference between the whiskeys is in their taste, so what you choose will depend on your personal preference.

  • Malt Whiskey – Malt whiskey originates from Scotland and has a smoky flavor. Made with malted barley, it’s distilled using a pot still. It’s then matured for at least three years in oak casks.
  • Grain Whiskey – Grain whiskey is also produced in Scotland, but it's not made of malt. Instead, it’s made using other types of grains such as wheat. It’s also made in Ireland and tastes almost like vodka. If you don’t want to overwhelm the taste of other ingredients in your cocktail recipe, then this is a good whiskey to use.
  • Blended Whiskey – Malt and grain are combined to make blended whiskey. For a smooth flavor, choose a whiskey with more grain than malt.
  • Bourbon – Bourbon refers to spirit made in the United States. It comes from corn and is aged in oak barrels for at least two years. Other types of grain such as rye and wheat are used, but the amount of corn must be at least 51 percent for the spirit to be called a bourbon.
  • Tennessee Whiskey – Like bourbon, Tennessee whiskey is from the U.S. However, it's made in the state of Tennessee. It undergoes an extra step of charcoal filtration before fermentation, which distinguishes it from other American spirits. Because of this step, this whiskey is a bit smoother than bourbon.

7 Top Whiskey Mule Recipes

Here are seven ways you can make a Whiskey Mule today using different whiskeys:

Kentucky Mule / Whiskey Ginger

three copper mugs containing ice mint leaves and ice side view

Image by Aysegul Sandford of  Foolproof Living

The Kentucky Mule is made using bourbon paired with ginger ale. This mixture produces a balance of the nutty flavor of the spirit with spicy ginger, thus making a delicious and unique combination.

Prep Time: 2 minutes Serves: 1

Ingredients:

  • 1¼ ounces bourbon
  • ½ ounce lime juice (fresh)
  • 1 top ginger ale
  • 1 lime wedge

Instructions:

  • Put ice in your copper mug then add lime juice.
  • Pour bourbon into the mug, add ginger ale and combine by stirring.
  • Garnish using a lime wedge and enjoy.

Middleton Mule

The Middleton Mule is similar to the Kentucky Mule except that it uses ginger syrup. Here’s how to make ginger syrup at home for that perfect cocktail:

  • You will need a cup of sugar, a cup of sliced ginger root, and ¾ cup of water.
  • Combine the water and sugar in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir until the sugar is dissolved, then add ginger.
  • When it begins to boil, cover, and reduce the heat.
  • Simmer for 15 minutes, then remove from the heat and let it cool.
  • Keep the mixture covered to allow steeping for about an hour.
  • Finally, strain the syrup into a bottle and keep it tightly sealed, ready for use whenever you need it.

Put your ginger syrup in the refrigerator and use it to make cocktails within two weeks. Here’s the recipe for the mule:

Prep Time: 3 minutes Serves : 1

  • 1½ ounces whiskey
  • ¼ ounce lime juice
  • ¼ ounce ginger syrup
  • 3¼ ounces ginger beer
  • Add whiskey, lime juice, ginger syrup, and ice into a shaker and shake to combine.
  • Strain the mixture into a copper mug, add more ice, then top with ginger beer.
  • Garnish using the lime wedge and drink up.

Tennessee Whiskey Mule

copper mug filled with liquid ice and lime beside a bottle

Choose your favorite Tennessee whiskey brand for this mule. This is a brilliant choice cocktail for parties, so try it out the next time you have guests over.

Prep Time: 5 minutes Serves: 1

  • 1½ ounces Tennessee whiskey
  • 4 ounces ginger beer
  • Fresh mint leaves
  • 3 lime wedges
  • Muddle five mint leaves and two lime wedges to release their juices and essence.
  • Put the lime juice and mint into a glass filled with ice and add whiskey. Top with ginger beer and stir.
  • Garnish with mint leaves and a lime wedge. Enjoy.

Irish Whiskey Mule

Irish whiskey is made in Ireland and is available in different styles. You can choose from grain, blended, single pot still, or single malt Irish whiskey to make an Irish Whiskey Mule . Use more ginger beer if you want a sweet drink, and less if you want the whiskey flavor to be more pronounced.

  • 2 ounces Irish whiskey
  • 6 ounces ginger beer
  • 1 ounce lime juice (fresh)
  • 1 lime wedge
  • Mint sprig
  • Fill a cocktail mug with ice and pour lime juice and whiskey.
  • Top with ginger beer and stir to mix.
  • Garnish with the mint sprig and lime wedge.

Blackberry Sage Kentucky Mule

If you like a fruity or herbal twist in your cocktails, then this recipe is for you. Use fresh blackberries and sage for a great flavor. Enjoy this cocktail daily to increase your energy and reduce sugar cravings, which is one of the ways moderate alcohol consumption can help in weight loss.

Prep Time: 3 minutes Serves: 1

Ingredients:

  • 2 ounces bourbon
  • 4 ounces ginger beer
  • 4 blackberries
  • ¾ ounce lime juice (fresh)
  • 1 ounce sage syrup
  • In a copper mug, muddle the blackberries.
  • Pour in lime juice and sage syrup then fill the mug with ice.
  • Add bourbon and top with the ginger beer, then stir to combine.

Clementine Whiskey Mule

Try this Clementine Whiskey Mule for a citrusy cocktail. The combination of ingredients here makes a sweet cocktail, so if you like your alcoholic beverages with sweeter flavors, then you should definitely try out this recipe.

  • 2 ounces Tennessee honey whiskey
  • 1 ounce ginger syrup
  • Fresh juice of 1 clementine
  • A squeeze of Meyer lemon
  • Squeeze of lime
  • 4 ounces of ginger ale
  • Slice of clementine
  • Pour whiskey, ginger syrup, clementine juice, Meyer lemon, and lime juice into a shaker with ice then shake to blend.
  • Fill a copper mug with ice, then strain the whiskey mixture into the mug.
  • Top with ginger ale then stir.
  • Garnish with a slice of clementine and serve.

Frozen Peach Whiskey Mule

This is another fruity Whiskey Mule option that uses frozen peaches. For this cocktail, use ice to control the consistency; for instance, blending in more ice will make it thicker. Also, use crushed ice as it will be easier to blend. You can easily make crushed ice in your kitchen by wrapping ice cubes in a clean kitchen cloth then smashing them with a mallet.

  • 1½ ounces bourbon
  • 1½ ounces fresh peaches, chopped
  • 3 ounces ginger beer
  • 1 cup crushed ice
  • Fresh mint sprigs
  • Combine ginger beer, lime juice, frozen peaches, and bourbon in a blender. Add ice then blend.
  • Pour the mixture into a copper mug and garnish with fresh mint sprigs.

Explore Flavors

The Whiskey Mule is a must-try variation of the Moscow Mule because of its versatility. Try as many recipes as you can to identify your favorite flavors. While at it, you can also add different types of herbs and fruits to spice up your drink.

Always drink your cocktails in moderation to enjoy them and avoid harming your health. Moderate alcohol intake has been shown to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases in healthy people, and a cocktail a day can be the drink that delivers these amazing benefits. For a refreshing drink, always serve over ice, and, in true mule fashion, use a copper mug to keep your beverage chilled for longer.

In other news, the Moscow mule is an iconic and famous cocktail that has grown in different versions in terms of the alcohol used as a replacement of the original one which is vodka. Given that whiskey is one of the most popular alcoholic beverages there is as can be proven by its numerous types, it also has made its way to the iconic drink .  Go through our full list of  21 amazing Moscow Mule cocktail recipes .

Perhaps the most famous variation of the Moscow Mule with whiskey is what’s called the Kentucky Mule, which is made from bourbon, an American whiskey. The Kentucky Mule is preferred by some people because they may find the vodka less flavorful compared to the boldness and variety of flavors that whiskey offers. But then again, not everyone is the same so you can freely choose which to like more. Aside from this, we will also be providing recipes using the other types of whiskeys and other whiskey mule spinoffs.

Kentucky Mule Recipe

Kentucky can say that the Kentucky mule is their pride and joy. It takes bourbon, mixed with a spicy ginger beer and the tang of lime and that becomes an awesome drink. Will it be as good as vodka used in the original mule? Give it a try and decide for yourself.

Tools Required:

  • Copper Mug - mugs that are copper-plated over tin, stainless steel or nickel that are traditionally used to serve Moscow mules and other variations such as the Kentucky mule .
  • Jigger   - a bar tool that is used to measure liquors, juices and spirits.
  • Citrus Squeezer - a two-piece tool joined together in a hinge that is used to squeeze the juice of citrus fruits like lemon and lime.
  • Bar spoon - an elongated spoon, used for stirring cocktails .

Ingredients:

2 oz. Woodford Reserve Kentucky Bourbon

  • ½ oz. freshly squeezed lime   juice

Fentimans Ginger beer (to top)

Sprig of mint (for garnish)

Steps to Make:

  • Squeeze the lime using a  citrus squeezer and measure it as well as the bourbon with a jigger   and pour them into a copper mug .

Fill the copper mug with ice cubes.

  • Top it off with ginger beer and stir with the bar spoon .
  • Lightly slap the sprig of mint against your hand to open up the aroma and garnish it on the drink.

You might be wondering what’s different with this recipe. Well, it has a “key” ingredient that makes it more tangy and zesty which is the key lime juice. It makes the drink more alive and somehow vibrant so you have to give this a try if you are a Kentucky mule fan.

  • 2 oz. Wild Turkey 101 Bourbon
  • ½ oz. Nellie and Joe’s Key Lime Juice
  • 6 oz. Gosling's Ginger Beer
  • Juice of a quarter of a lime
  • Lime   wedge (for garnish)
  • Fill a copper mug with ice cubes.
  • Measure the bourbon and key lime juice with a jigger   and pour them into the copper mug.
  • Squeeze the quarter lime into the mug as well.
  • Top it off with ginger beer, give it a quick stir with a bar spoon and garnish with a lime wedge.

Now, what does this version have to offer? It follows the trio of ingredients: bourbon, lime juice and ginger beer but the preparation are what makes it different. The lime is actually muddled along with some mint leaves so not only does it have the smokiness of the bourbon, the tang from the lime and the spiciness of the ginger beer but also the cool menthol feel of the mint.

  • 2 oz. Knob Creek Bourbon
  • Goslings Ginger Beer (to top)
  • 3 mint leaves
  • 2 lime   wedges
  • Crushed Ice
  • Sprig of Mint (for garnish)
  • Put the mint leaves and lime wedges in a copper mug . Lightly muddle them with a muddler .
  • Measure the bourbon with a jigger   and pour it into the copper mug. Then, add crushed ice.
  • Top it off with ginger beer and stir with a bar spoon . Garnish it with a lime wedge and a sprig of mint.

Kentucky Buck

This lovely concoction features the flavors of a Kentucky mule and added with the delightful sweetness and tartness of the strawberries. This recipe uses lemon juice instead of lime juice because lemon works better with strawberries.

  • 2 oz. Evan Williams Bourbon
  • 2 hulled strawberries
  • ¾ oz. freshly squeezed Lemon juice
  • ½ oz. Liber & Co. Ginger Syrup
  • ½ oz. Monin Simple Syrup
  • Q Mixers Ginger Beer (to top)
  • Strawberry (for garnish)
  • Prince of Peace Ginger candy (for garnish; optional)
  • In a cocktail shaker , put in the strawberries. Measure the bourbon, lemon juice, ginger syrup and simple syrup with a jigger and pour them into the shaker as well.
  • Add ice cubes into the shaker, cover it up and shake for about 10 seconds.
  • Fill a Collins glass with fresh ice. Double strain the mixture straight into the glass ( hawthorne strainer and fine mesh strainer ).
  • Top it off with ginger beer. Stick a strawberry and ginger candy with a toothpick and garnish the drink with it.

Summer is fast approaching and what better way to spend it than enjoying a mug of Kentucky mule filled with berries and mint. You may already have your favorite summer drinks but once you get a taste of this concoction, it may land a spot on your list.

  • 3 raspberries
  • 2 blackberries
  • 2 mint leaves
  • 1 oz. Monin simple syrup
  • Juice of half a lime
  • 1.5 oz. Bulleit bourbon
  • Goslings Ginger beer (to top)
  • Lime wheel (for garnish)
  • Blackberry and raspberry (for garnish)
  • In a shaker tin , put in the raspberries and blackberries. Squeeze the lime in, measure the simple syrup and bourbon with a jigger  and pour them in as well. Lightly muddle these with a muddler .
  • Add ice cubes into the shaker. Gently stir the drink with a bar spoon .
  • Fill a copper mug with fresh ice. Strain and pour the mixture into the copper mug. Top it off with ginger beer.
  • Garnish with a lime wheel and the berries.

The first mule in the list that uses a different whiskey other than bourbon: the Tennessee mule! When you hear Tennessee whiskey, we bet the first thing that comes to your mind is Jack Daniel’s . Other than the oak, caramel and vanilla flavors that whiskey generally has, Jack Daniel’s has light licorice notes that are not overwhelming but rather complement the other flavors well.

  • 1 oz. Jack Daniel’s Whiskey
  • Juice of 1 lime wedge
  • 3 oz. Maine Root Ginger Beer
  • Put ice cubes in a copper mug .
  • Measure the whiskey and ginger beer with a jigger and pour them into the copper mug.
  • Squeeze the lime wedge straight into the mug. Stir with a bar spoon .
  • Garnish with a sprig of mint.

Irish Buck

American whiskeys are great but there are also amazing foreign whiskeys that are worth it. Perhaps the next famous whiskey mule next to the Kentucky mule is the Irish mule. Irish whiskeys are made from malted barley and have a smooth, velvety texture and sweet caramel taste. This recipe uses Bushmills Irish whiskey which tastes like a creme brulee but with a spicy and fruity aroma with vanilla notes.

  • 2 oz. Bushmills Irish Whiskey
  • 1 oz. Lime juice
  • 6 oz. Fever Tree Ginger Ale
  • Lime wedge (for garnish)

Steps to Make:

  • Measure the Irish whiskey, lime juice and ginger ale with a  jigger and pour them into the copper mug.
  • Stir the mixture with a bar spoon . Garnish with a lime wedge and a sprig of mint.

Irish Mule

Jameson Irish whiskey is quite a famous brand for making Irish mules. It gives a light floral fragrance, has a spicy wood pepperiness with sweet, nutty and vanilla tones that are excellent on the palate. The best pair for this whiskey is none other than Bundaberg ginger beer.  Also, this recipe calls for muddled ginger so if you want something challenging but still very refreshing, this recipe is the one for you.

ingredients :

  • 2 small pieces of Ginger
  • 2 oz. Jameson Irish Whiskey
  • 6 oz. Bundaberg ginger Beer
  • Dehydrated lime wheel (for garnish; optional)
  • In a shaker tin , put in the pieces of ginger and muddle them using a muddler .
  • Measure the whiskey with a jigger and pour it into the shaker.
  • Squeeze the lime into the shaker. Cover and then shake for about 10 seconds.
  • Fill a copper mug with ice cubes. Strain and pour the mixture into the copper mug.
  • Top it off with the ginger beer. Garnish with the sprig of mint and lime wheel.

  • 2 oz. Great King Street Scotch whiskey or Great King Street Glasgow Blend
  • ½ oz. freshly squeezed  lime juice or Tropicana grapefruit juice
  • Fever Tree Ginger Beer (to top)
  • Lime twist or Grapefruit twist (for garnish)
  • Fill two highball glasses with ice cubes. Measure the classic whiskey with a jigger and pour it in one glass. Do the same with the Glasgow blend and pour it in the other glass.
  • Measure the lime juice and grapefruit juice with a jigger and put the lime in the classic while the grapefruit in the Glasgow blend.
  • Top both of the drinks with ginger beer.
  • Garnish the classic one with a lime twist and the other with a grapefruit twist.

If there is one thing that distinguishes rye from other whiskeys, it is its signature peppery bite that washes the palate every time you take a sip. The brand used for this recipe is Rittenhouse which features a thick, fruity taste with hints of chocolate oranges and the smokiness of cassia bark, nutmeg and oak, it makes one great mule.

  • 2 oz. Rittenhouse Rye
  • ¼ oz. Freshly squeezed lime juice
  • Fentimans Ginger Beer (to top)
  • Splash of The Ginger People Organic Ginger juice (optional)
  • Put ice cubes in a Collins glass .
  • Measure the lime juice and rye with a jigger and pour them into the glass.
  • Add just a splash of ginger juice if you like and top it off with the ginger beer.

Canadian Mule

Just as Canada and America are neighbors, their whiskeys are not that far off from each other too. Though, Canadian is spelled without the “e”, it still shares the vanilla, fruity and smoky notes of American whiskeys. This recipe uses Collingwood whisky that has a rather buttery or oily mouthfeel. If you want something sweeter, you can swap it out with Crown Royal.

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 oz. Collingwood Canadian whisky
  • Bundaberg Ginger beer (to top)
  • Lime wedge (for garnish0
  • Fill a copper mug with ice cubes.
  • Measure the whisky with a jigger and pour it into the copper mug.
  • Squeeze the lime into the mug as well.
  • Top it off with ginger beer. Stir with a bar spoon .
  • Garnish with a lime wedge.

Yes, there is already a Tennessee mule in the list but it doesn’t have any honey in it. Try this awesome honey Jack Daniel’s and make it into a honey Tennessee mule. It is somehow the same but sweeter and lighter because of the honey.

  • 1.5 oz. Jack Daniel’s Honey Whiskey
  • 3 oz. Bundaberg Ginger Beer
  • Fill a glass with ice cubes.
  • Measure the whiskey with a jigger and pour it into the glass.
  • Top it off with about 3 ounces of ginger beer.
  • Give it a stir with a bar spoon . Garnish with a lime wheel.

Whiskey Ginger Cocktail

Just like the Mamie taylor, the whiskey ginger is a whole other cocktail but is very similar with the Kentucky mule since it also uses Kentucky straight bourbon. But, instead of ginger beer, this recipe calls for a smoky ginger ale that makes the whiskey flavor pop more. You have the option of elevating its look by lighting it on fire but if you want to be safe, you can leave this out and still have a great cocktail. It certainly gives you fall vibes.

  • 3 oz. Knob Creek Rye Whiskey
  • 5 oz. Fever Tree Smoky Ginger Ale
  • Half a lime (for garnish)
  • Fill a rocks glass with ice cubes.
  • Top it off with about 5 ounces of ginger ale. Then, stir it with a bar spoon .
  • If you want your cocktail in flames, pour a little bit of whiskey on top of the half lime and light it on fire with matches.

Foods that Pair Well with a Whiskey Mule

Whiskey in general goes great with chocolate, cheese, salmon and more. Most whiskeys have the flavors of vanilla, caramel, honey, and oak that makes it sweet but smoky. Try making these delicious dishes and desserts that have flavors and notes that go really well with the flavor profile of the drink, you’ll definitely take a sip and a bite consecutively.

Pan-seared Salmon with Lemon Butter Sauce

To keep your stomach occupied while sipping a cold and refreshing Kentucky mule, try this perfectly seared salmon with a delicious and zesty sauce that goes well with the drink’s spiciness.

A classic American dessert that is adored by many that also happens to complement the ginger flavor of the drink with its sweet cinnamon apple filling. Since you will be pairing it with a cold drink, you always have the option of whether or not  putting that iconic vanilla ice cream on top.

Cheese Board

The next time you’re having guests and friends over, serve them with the Kentucky mule along with this ultimate cheese board. Like other alcohols, whiskey is great to have with cheese and you totally have the freedom to choose your favorite cheeses and other finger foods like meat, grapes, biscuits, crackers and more.

Chocolate Souffle

Whiskey is typically great with chocolate and if you don’t want to nibble on just chocolate, make yourself a treat and Indulge in this decadent and light chocolate souffle. It is super easy to make and it is delightfully good.

It’s dinner time, so why don’t you serve your family a nice flavorful meatloaf to go along your Kentucky mule. The drink’s spice cuts through the fattiness of the meat that makes it an awesome definition of balance.

Barbeque Chicken Wings

Chicken wings are very famous for its variety, taste and looks, that’s why people love it. And to pair it off with one of the popular variations of the Moscow mule, the Kentucky mule, that’s just an ultimate meal to eat with a bunch of friends, so give it a try!

Pumpkin Carrot Cake

Pumpkin and carrot are two ingredients that blend very well with ginger in most dishes. Having a dessert version of these two while sipping a drink that happens to have a burst of ginger flavor, it’s just like a whole meal but on the sweeter side. Also this cake is covered in a smooth cream cheese frosting so it’s gotta be tasty, light and slightly sweet.

What is the best bourbon brand for a Kentucky Mule?

There are a lot of great bourbon brands and the most used ones when making a Kentucky mule include Bulleit, Maker’s Mark, Woodford Reserve, Jim Black and Wild Turkey 101. There is also an array of Kentucky rye that you can use which has a totally different flavor profile. The choice of bourbon will always be a matter of preference so if you like something else and believe that it will go great in a Kentucky mule, go for it.

What are the types of whiskey?

There are about nine types of whiskey namely, Bourbon Whiskey, Irish Whiskey, Scotch Whisky, Japanese Whisky , Canadian Whisky, Tennessee Whiskey, Rye Whiskey, Blended Whiskey, and Single Malt Whisky. If you can notice, there are two ways to spell “whiskey”, the Irish spell the same way as the American while the Scottish omits the “e” which is followed by the Japanese and Canadian. They have different distilling styles and aging lengths but they share the same shade of color despite the others being made from other ingredients. They are also kept in oak barrels thus giving whiskey, in general, smoky flavors.

What is the difference between a buck and a mule?

Some people differentiate the terms “mule” and “buck” based on whether ginger beer or ginger ale is used, for argument's sake. They say that the mule denotes ginger beer while the buck is used for ginger ale. While this seems like an easy and good enough explanation, there are some who insist that either ginger ale or ginger beer will take up “buck” as the name. When the Moscow mule rose to popularity, the “mule” kind of stuck even if it was just a play on buck because anything that is spirit + ginger beer or ginger ale + citrus juice was called a buck. This is why some people use it interchangeably.

What effect does the copper mug have on the drink?

Copper mugs are plated with copper, which is a good conductor, so when it is filled with ice, it becomes cold almost instantly thus keeps the drink cold for a long time. Copper mugs were originally used to serve Moscow mules, part of the need to sell a  surplus of copper mugs back when it was invented. It turned out very well because aside from keeping the drink cold, it also became the symbol of Moscow mules as well as other types of mules that we know and love these days.

Is drinking from a copper mug good?

There has been a debate regarding copper mugs having health benefits or not. Some say that the copper material in the mug  provides antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and antioxidant properties which makes drinking from it beneficial for the health and that they ought to start drinking water from it. On the other hand, there is also a study that disproves this claim. It indicates that copper mugs are neither healthy nor unhealthy. Whether this is true or not, one thing is for sure, copper mugs are safe to drink from especially when they are lined.

Other Delightful Whiskey Cocktails

After you’ve had the Kentucky mule, you’ll probably look for other whiskey drinks . And so, you can check out these whiskey sour recipes or if you still want the tanginess from the lime, you can also give these whiskey limeade  recipes a try.

Conclusion

People always want something more. They don’t want to stick with the same things all the time because it will just get boring. Moscow mule is good, that’s for sure but others might not appreciate vodka as much, and that’s what the Kentucky mule is for because it caters to other people’s preferences. There is a long list of whiskeys that have specific and distinct flavors and taste but generally, they work well being a mule.

The moscow mule cocktail.

Moscow Mule Cocktail

  • 1½ to 2 ounces vodka
  • ½ ounce fresh-squeezed lime juice (about ½ medium lime)
  • ~4 ounces ginger beer (to taste; you might want a bit less or more)
  • lime wheel or wedge for garnish (optional; may also use a sprig of mint)
  • Fill a copper mule mug (or a tall glass) with ice cubes. Add the vodka and lime juice, then top up with ginger beer. Give the drink a quick stir to combine the ingredients.
  • Add the garnish (if using) and a pair of straws, if you like (we do). Serve and enjoy.

Moscow Mule Cocktail

  • In cocktail parlance, a “mule” is a drink that combines a spirit with citrus juice and ginger beer or ale. An earlier (largely forgotten) name for this category of drink is a “buck.”
  • Because of The Moscow Mule’s popularity, vodka has become the best-known spirit for this type of cocktail. But you can make a mule with any base liquor – bourbon, brandy, rum, whatever.
  • The Dark and Stormy Cocktail , which uses dark rum as its base spirit, is a type of mule (at least if you include lime juice – which you should, in our opinion).
  • Ginger beer is a spicier, more vivacious cousin of ginger ale. It’s usually nonalcoholic, though you can find versions with booze. Most liquor stores carry several different brands of ginger beer, and they all have different taste profiles. Experiment until you find one you like.
  • The Moscow Mule originally was made with the Smirnoff brand of vodka. But any good vodka will work in this drink.
  • So, how did the Moscow Mule come to be? One legend goes like this: In the late 1930s, the Heublein drinks company purchased the rights to Smirnoff. John G. Martin, an executive at Heublein, was tasked with making Smirnoff popular – a tough sell because most Americans at the time associated vodka with eastern European immigrants. Drinkers in the US were into whiskey. And gin.
  • Then one day in 1941, Martin visited the Cock ‘n’ Bull Pub in Los Angeles, where he dined with the owner, a friend of his named Jack Morgan. Martin started complaining about how hard it was to sell vodka. Morgan, in turn, began lamenting an epic lapse of judgment on his own part – he had provisioned his bar with way too much ginger beer, and couldn’t move the stuff.
  • So the two men put their heads together – over a drink, of course – and brainstormed the idea of combining Smirnoff vodka with ginger beer. And lime. They called it the Moscow Mule because vodka was thought to be quintessentially Russian.
  • How did the copper mug enter the scene? Well, supposedly Morgan’s girlfriend had a copper factory. And she was long on copper mugs that she couldn’t unload. So the three cocktail conspirators decided to use copper mugs as the drink’s signature vessel. Win, win, win.
  • The mug turned out to be a brilliant stroke of marketing. When people saw someone drinking from a copper mug in a bar or restaurant, they wanted to know what was being consumed. Then they had to order one too –  and maybe liked it so much they ordered another. And stole the mug to take home.
  • Swell story. Is it true? Probably not. Eric Felten, in a 2007 Wall Street Journal article, says the drink was actually invented by Wes Price, Morgan’s head bartender. Though Price apparently was motivated to move some excess ginger beer and vodka out of the storeroom (the Cock ‘n’ Bull was overstocked with both).
  • According to Price, he served the first Moscow Mule he mixed to the actor Broderick Crawford, who liked it. Crawford then told his friends among the Hollywood glitterati. They liked it too, and the Moscow Mule became a Tinseltown favorite. Soon, the whole country liked it. A legend was born.
  • Oh, and that vodka stuff that nobody ever drank? Well, it went on to star in countless new drinks.

I bet it's very good! Cheers!

Hi Angie, it is! :-) Thanks for the comment.

This was the drink of choice when my German visits were here. Cheers !

Hi Gerlinde, this went out of style for a bit, but it's become really popular again. And it should be -- wonderful flavor. Thanks for the comment.

I always learn from you--I had no idea vodka hasn't always been so popular here. But now I'm really thirsty :). Moscow Mules are appropriate for lunch, right?

At the moment I am busy cleaning the concrete floors in Manservant's unflooded office to get it ready for staining. 6pm is quitting time and this will be in my head until then. Have all the ingredients and I am hotter than a mule on this 97 degree day. This is looking mighty fine!

My culinary reading group read a wonderful history of the family that invented the eponymous Smirnoff Vodka: "The King of Vodka: The Story of Pyotr Smirnov and the Upheaval of an Empire" by Linda Himelstein. The reason why an American corporation got the rights to the name and product is interesting too. best... mae at maefood.blogspot.com

Fantastic story, especially how the copper mugs came into play! We're in the middle of a sunny week so a frosty Moscow Mule sounds very inviting.

Wow! John....that looks so cool and refreshing. I've been working pulling weeds from the flower beds and came in for a break. This is just what I need right now, but then I would probably crash and not finish the weeds....lol PS...I love this photo :)

Love this, a great little drink for 5:00 here! And lucky me---the ingredients are waiting for me! Like the copper mug story also! But, I'm glad I don't have to have one to make this smooth cocktail. Wonder how it would be with Dry Gin... Thanks, my comrade for the recipe!

Hi Kelsie, most definitely appropriate for lunch! All that ginger beer makes this a light drink. :-) Thanks for the comment.

Hi Abbe, you'll definitely want one or more of these to cool off! Thanks for the comment.

Hi Mae, sounds like an interesting book! Booze history can be fascinating. :-) Thanks for the comment.

Hi Deb, the mug really does make this drink, doesn't it? Thanks for the comment.

Hi Pat, maybe one of these after the weeds? :-) Thanks for the comment.

Hi Pam, I'll bet gin would be good in this! Just call it a gin buck. :-) Thanks for the comment.

I love that copper mug, what you serve something in really does make a difference. I am always more interested in something if it is served in a unique or aesthetic way

Hi Dahn, the mug is a lot of fun, isn't it? However its use came about, it was genius. :-) Thanks for the comment.

I do like this drink, especially in a frosty copper mug. I am intrigued by the notion of using brandy to make it. Will let you know how it works out!

I've been using vodka to make a Harvey Wallbanger, which has orange juice. But adding ginger beer and lime juice sounds like a nice alternative!

This drink looks like something my husband would love!

Hi Lydia, do let me know how the brandy works! Sounds pretty good. :-) Thanks for the comment.

Hi Fran, love the Galliano in the Harvey Wallbanger! That drink and this have different flavor profiles, of course, but both are quite refreshing. Thanks for the comment.

Hi Peachy, you need to make sure he has one. :-) Thanks for the comment.

This is my favorite drink of all time and I just bought the Copper mugs to make them in! Love it!

Hi Ashley, the copper mugs are SO much fun! :-) Thanks for the comment.

I am SO INTO Moscow Mules right now!! With the 3 digit temperatures we're having, they are the perfect heat buster and I've been ordering every time we go out to eat. I'm going to have to make that Dark and Stormy as I love dark Jamaican rum. YUM! Thanks for sharing the recipe John!

Hi MJ, such a refreshing drink, isn't it? If you like this, because you like dark Jamaican rum you'll really like the Dark and Stormy, too. Both really nice drinks. Thanks for the comment.

Almost the Russian version of a caipirinha, Brazil's national drink. Cheers to summer!

Hi Denise, this is somewhat similar -- nicely lime (almost lemon-lime) flavor. Thanks for the comment.

This wasn't only a great post with a delicious beverage, but a very educational one, John! ;)

You can't go wrong with a Moscow mule, especially not in the sunshine!

I always wondered how the copper mug for this came about. Thanks for the info! This is a great cocktail for hot weather. Is it 5 o'clock yet?

Hi Agness, we love cocktail history, so whenever we know something interesting about a drink, we like to share it. :-) Thanks for the comment.

Hi Carolyn, this is a wonderful drink to sip on a hot sunny day! Thanks for the comment.

Hi Lisa, it's 5 o'clock somewhere! :-) Thanks for the comment.

aaaaaand you've just hit upon my favorite drink of the summer: I live on Moscow Mules when the weather kicks into high temperatures, simply because it's super-refreshing and yes, easy to do by eye (which is exactly how I make it.) I had no idea that "mule" actually described a larger genre of drinks - I learn something new from you each time you post. :) thanks!

I have seen lots of different takes on the Moscow Mule at restaurants in my area but I haven't tried any yet. You've inspired me!

This is a must try for me. What kind of ginger beer do you recommend? Whether or not it's in the copper mug, it looks very refreshing!

Hi Shannon, this is such a nice summer drink, isn't it? You might want to try a Dark and Stormy sometime -- a bit heavier than the Moscow Mule, but more flavor too. Thanks for the comment.

Hi Laura, you definitely need to give this a try! Fun drink. And tasty. :-) Thanks for the comment.

Hi Tricia, Fever Tree is my current favorite when it comes to ginger beer, but not the easiest to find. Gosling's is available even in supermarkets where I live, and is good and quite refreshing. A bit sweet, but it works in this drink. Thanks for the comment.

Aaaaaahhhhh....you're totally speaking my language. The Moscow Mule is perfect for summer. We make a Texas Mule with grapefruit vodka and the same other ingredients. CHEERS!

Hi Pamela, haven't had a Teas Mule -- really like the idea of it. :-) Thanks for the comment.

I'm off the booze at the minute, but a virgin mule would taste the business too, I am sure. I need me some of those copper mugs. They are gorgeous. As are your photographs.

Hi Anna, a virgin mule would taste quite good. Maybe increase the lime a bit (perhaps double it?). Thanks for the comment.

I actually HAVE THOSE MUGS!!!

Hi John, this drink probably has one of my favorite stories to date, always learn something interesting when I read your post. I've been seeing these mugs in all the shops now I know what they are all about, thanks!

Hi, Gigi, you'll enjoy putting them to good use. :-) Thanks for the comment.

Hi Cheri, the story behind this drink is fun, isn't it? Although like with all drink stories, kinda sketchy. :-) Thanks for the comment.

I like the copper mug looks refreshing. I bet the drink is refreshing as well.

Hi Amira, the mug looks nice, doesn't it? And yes, the drink is refreshing. :-) Thanks for the comment.

This Moscow mule would certainly hit the spot on a hot summer's eve--which will probably occur every day for the rest of the summer!! So refreshing!

Looks like perfect drink for the season.

Hi Liz, it's definitely the season for frosty, cooling drinks. :-) Thanks for the comment.

Hi Holly, it really is. Definitely a nice cooler. :-) Thanks for the comment.

A perfect drink. It looks superb. Yum :)

Such a great, drink I had my first pretty recently because MOntreal is going through a Moscow Mule obsession lol. I love the copper mugs too. And I am a big fan of ginger beer!

I just recently had my first Moscow Mule but yours looks better!

Hi Ritu, it is superb! :-) Thanks for the comment.

Hi Evelyne, ginger beer is wonderful, isn't it? Love its tangy flavor! Thanks for the comment.

Hi Chris, good drink, isn't it? If you haven't had a Dark and Stormy, that's worth trying, too. Thanks for the comment.

I love drinks served in signature glasses and this one is so cute in the copper mug! It's a good story too, and it really doesn't matter if it's true or not. I like vodka, the clear alcohols have less carbs and generally don't give you a hangover (unless, of course, consumed in copious amounts!) LOL!

Hi Eva, it's all about quantity, isn't it? :-) Those mugs really do look nice. And it's a good story. Lot of cocktail lore is kind of dubious, but as long as it's a good story, it's OK in my book! Thanks for the comment.

Hi John, This is one of my favourite summer drinks but for some crazy reason ginger beer is not very popular in Canada so I always have to go in search of it when I make them. I need a copper mug too! Great photo and beautiful drink :) Cheers!

I need to try this drink. My neighbors love a Moscow Mule and are always talking about it. Now that I have your recipe I'll give it a whirl.

Hi Robyn, too bad about it being so difficult to find ginger beer! You need to speak to the authorities. :D Thanks for the comment.

Hi Vicki, it's a nice drink! And I know you don't drink that much -- you can put maybe an ounce of vodka in this and (I think) it'd still be a good drink. Thanks for the comment.

Happy Birthday John! Can we toast to your B-Day? Love moscow mules cool and refreshing and light and bright. I don't know why but drinking them in the copper mugs always makes them feel colder and even better.

Hi Bobbi, those mugs are fun! Thanks for the B-Day wishes, and the comment. :-)

The mug is working the same magic on this cocktail in restaurants today. GREG

Hi Greg, that mug is such great marketing, isn't it? Thanks for the comment.

Certainly thirsty for a drink or two now, phew!. Thanks for sharing the recipe, warm greetings to you!

Hi Blogaratti, the downside with posts like this is they do make you thirsty. The upside is, well, you're thirsty! :-) Thanks for the comment.

I like literally everything about this drink, even that you can pour it on eye <3

Hi Marta, this is a good one! :-) Thanks for the comment.

Thanks forthe history lesson! I've had many Moscow Mules, and have often wondered about their backstory.

Hi Jeff, fun story, isn't it? Most of it probably isn't "true" but the drink tastes "true" which is all that matter. :-) Thanks for the comment.

Can you believe I've never had one? But I am a big dark and stormy fan, so I'm pretty sure I'd love it, and thanks for the history lesson, as always!

This is one of my sister-in-law's favorite cocktails! I will be sure to forward her your post, she will enjoy it! You two are so cute!! :)

Hi Sue, you definitely need to give one of these a try! The flavor isn't as deep as a dark and stormy -- much more lemon/limey. But good! Thanks for the comment.

Hi Marcelle, next time you see your sister-in-law, you should both have one of these. :-) Thanks for the comment.

I want to go with the entrepreneurial story: too much vodka, too much ginger beer, and a surplus of copper mugs. I love it!

I love anything ginger. And who can resist the bling of the copper mug? Now wonder Moscow Mules are having a moment.

This drink sounds refreshing. Love the copper mug.

Hi Debra, that's a fun scenario, isn't it? :-) Thanks for the comment.

Hi Carolyn, copper mug bling is fun! Thanks for the comment.

Hi Dawn, that mug is really hard to resist. :-) Thanks for the comment.

From such types of drinks vodka is the only one I drink and I will certainly try this one out! Looks perfect!

Hi Katerina, you'll like this! :-) Thanks for the comment.

I've actually never had one of these drink, but now that I see that they contain ginger beer I will need to change that because it's one of my favorites!

Hi Amy, ginger beer is so tasty, isn't it? We love the stuff! Thanks for the comment.

I love Moscow mule cocktail, but I have never made it at home. Thank you so much for this wonderful recipe. Loving your photos.

LOVE Moscow mules. Looks and sounds perfect!

Hi Anu, you need to give this a try sometime -- fun drink to make. Thanks for the comment.

Hi Pam, so refreshing during the hot summer months! Thanks for the comment.

Sounds like a nice combination. I might try substituting some other liquor for the vodka—I think rum would go nicely with the ginger beer? Or maybe try a "virgin" version.

Hi Frank, if you like dark rum, that's my suggestion. Otherwise bourbon or brandy should be pretty nice in this. And the virgin version would be good too -- really refreshing! Thanks for the comment.

I used to hate these drinks but last year I had one (at a hip Vietnamese restaurant) that totally changed it for me and now I love them! I'll have to try yours.

Hi Alyssa, this really is a refreshing drink in the summer -- worth drinking for that reason alone. Thanks for the comment.

Glad to finally learn why these drinks are traditionally served in copper mugs! I've actually never had one of these drinks. But it sounds and looks so refreshing! Beautiful photos, John! :)

Hi Anne, it's a nice summer drink -- very refreshing. Thanks for the comment.

  17. Why is this called a 'Moscow Mule'?

By thebourbonbabe on June 16, 2015. Sharing the recipe for the Kentucky Mule, a bourbon variation of the vodka-based Moscow Mule, got me wondering about that cocktail's name. 23. Kitchen Riffs: The Moscow Mule Cocktail

One legend goes like this: In the late 1930s, the Heublein drinks company purchased the rights to Smirnoff. John G. Martin, an executive at Heublein, was tasked with making Smirnoff popular - a tough sell because most Americans at the time associated vodka with eastern European immigrants. Drinkers in the US were into whiskey. And gin.
