Labatt to create 25 jobs with $69M expansion at Edmonton brewery

Labatt factory

Labatt Breweries' expansion in Edmonton will create more than two dozen jobs and is a sign of Alberta's recovering economy, the company and politicians say.

Labatt is spending $69 million to add brewing types and capacity in Alberta's capital city by way of a new 30,000-square foot warehouse alongside updates to its brewhouse and control room.

According to president Kyle Norrington, the number of people employed at the site will increase from 180 to 205.

"The investment is really about innovation and growth. In 1964, that innovation, I said, was about stubbies. Today, it's focused on what we call ready-to-drink beverages," Norrington told a crowd of reporters and municipal and provincial officials on Monday.

Ready-to-drink beverages -- such as Mike's Hard Lemonade, Palm Bay, Okanagan Cider, American Vintage Iced Tea and, soon in Edmonton, NUTRL Vodka Soda -- represent about 30 per cent of alcohol category growth, Norrington said.

The announcement was touted as a sign of Alberta's growing attractiveness as a place to invest and do business.

"We take this as a vote of confidence in Alberta and its economic recovery, a recovery that is in full steam ahead right now," said Premier Jason Kenney, who later cracked a cold one with Labatt's president.

According to mayor Don Iveson, the city approved development and building permits for Labatt in less than 40 days.

"Which if you know anything about how challenging that sort of thing is historically with the City of Edmonton, that is meteoric progress which shows we, too, are open for business," he commented.

Labatt's history in Canada dates back to the 1850s, and about one century later, Labatt would announce plans to expand with a brewery in Alberta's capital city. Edmonton's facility was built in 1963. The brewer, now under the Anheuser-Busch brand, has locations in six provinces.

The company has invested about $119 million in Alberta.

Edmonton's Labatt brewery serves an estimated 3,000 retail outlets with products from 144 Alberta suppliers.

“It’s really a facility that will let us make brands like Mike’s Hard Lemonade, Palm Bay, Okanagan Cider, American Vintage to name a few, and in the near future brands like NUTRL Vodka Soda as well, right here with our amazing team,” said Peter Delamont, general manager of Labatt Edmonton Brewery.

“It really positions the brewery for the future, allowing us to produce these brands that are in high demand and continuing to grow across the west and across North America.”

Mike’s Hard Lemonade and other ready-to-drink beverages are also made in B.C., Ontario and Quebec.

The extra warehouse space is needed because the facility will be producing more products, which also means more jobs for the city.

“We’re really excited about that, creating new jobs and setting our brewery up for future growth to address the changing needs and tastes of all our consumers,” said Delamont.

“It’s a testament to our skilled employees here at the brewery and the quality, care and craftsmanship we’ve always put in, and it’s led to future growth here on site and we’re just really proud of that.”

Delamont said the brewery team in Alberta currently helps serve 3,000 retail outlets, bars and restaurants across the province. Labatt has been brewing beer in Edmonton for almost 60 years and the brewery’s president said the new expansion will ensure further success.

“As the province continues its post-pandemic recovery, this investment is one more step in the right direction, with new jobs, economic growth and the type of innovation that continues to make Alberta a great place to live, work and do business,” said Kyle Norrington in a news release.

Delamont said the investment allows the Edmonton brewery to bring in new technology and equipment, while also upgrading brewing and training practices.

A news conference to mark the expansion is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Monday, with both Mayor Don Iveson and Premier Jason Kenney speaking.

“It’s a major investment in Alberta and it’s really going to help accelerate the province’s economic recovery and create jobs in Edmonton. … Having the premier here really demonstrates our commitment to Alberta while also recognizing investments and innovation will be key for economic recovery for the whole province,” said Delamont.

This expansion means increasingly popular ready-to-drink brands like Mike’s Hard Lemonade, Palm Bay, Okanagan Cider, American Vintage and soon, NUTRL Vodka Soda will be produced locally in Edmonton, by Albertans.

“It really positions the brewery for the future, allowing us to produce these brands that are in high demand and continuing to grow across the west and across North America,” said Peter Delamont, general manager of the Labatt Edmonton Brewery.

Labatt has a strong history in the Edmonton region that goes back to the construction of their brewery in 1963. Since the brewery’s opening in 1964, Labatt ‘s  has brewed here for almost 60 years. The company has always been a key player of the provincial economy—today, it employs 190 Albertans, services 3,000 retail outlets, bars and restaurants across the province, and works with 144 local suppliers.

“As the province continues its post-pandemic recovery, this investment is one more step in the right direction, with new jobs, economic growth and the type of innovation that continues to make Alberta a great place to live, work and do business,” said Kyle Norrington, President of Labatt Breweries.

“We’ve worked closely with the team at Labatt over the last 18 months to make this investment a reality,” said Edmonton Global CEO, Malcolm Bruce. “And we recognize the tremendous value the company brings in terms of jobs, growth, and spirit. We raise a glass to Labatt for consistently choosing the region to be a center for its business.”

Canada: Labatt invests nearly CAD 70 million in Edmonton brewery

labatt brewery edmonton tour

Labatt Breweries of Canada , since 1995 owned by Interbrew what later evolved in the world’s largest brewer AB InBev , today announced a continuation of its CAD 119 million capital program. CAD 69.2 million will go directly into Labatt's Edmonton (Alberta) brewery to expand production capacity and capability and meet the consumers’ changing needs and tastes.

The Edmonton brewery investment will support new technology, equipment, product lines and upgrades to the brewhouse and control room. It will also fund 30,000 square feet of new warehouse space and a 30,000 square-foot ready-to-drink building to support expanded brewing type and capacity.

The investment in warehouse expansion, a new ready-to-drink building, equipment and training addresses the burgeoning demand for ready-to-drink beverages, which represents 30 per cent of beverage alcohol category growth. This means ready-to-drink brands like Mike's Hard Lemonade , Palm Bay , Okanagan Cider , American Vintage and in the near future, NUTRL Vodka Soda , will be produced locally in Edmonton along with other leading beer brands like Budweiser and Bud Light .

This investment will help to create 25 local jobs in Edmonton.

Built in 1963, Labatt's Edmonton brewery has undergone four major capital investment programs since 2015. Today, the location employs more than 190 people. In addition to capital investments, Labatt has supported Alberta communities through its Disaster Relief Program, delivering canned drinking water during the Calgary floods and Fort McMurray wildfires. This past year, the Edmonton brewery was one of many Labatt breweries across Canada that shifted production to make hand sanitizer in support of partners at local restaurants and Food Banks.

These investments are part of an ongoing provincewide capital investment totaling CAD 119 million over 2019-2022 that will also support operations beyond the brewery.

"We're proud of our history in Alberta with almost 60 years of brewing beer in Edmonton and serving Albertans across the province," says Kyle Norrington , President of Labatt Breweries of Canada. "As the province continues its post-pandemic recovery, this investment is one more step in the right direction, with new jobs, economic growth and the type of innovation that continues to make Alberta a great place to live, work and do business."

"Today, our Alberta team helps us serve 3,000 retail outlets, bars and restaurants with products that come from 144 suppliers across the province," says Peter Delamont , General Manager of Labatt Edmonton Brewery. "We are truly Made in Alberta and we're proud to be able to contribute to our communities and to our province's economy through this investment."

"It's great to be at Labatt's Edmonton Brewery with more exciting news about Alberta's economic recovery. Labatt is investing CAD 119 million into Alberta, with CAD 69 million of that right here in our capital region - to buy new equipment, technology and upgrades. This is a vote of confidence in Alberta's recovery, creating dozens of new jobs right here in Edmonton, and even more across the province through economic impacts. This is more proof that Alberta's Recovery Plan is powering our economy and getting Albertans back to work," says Jason Kenney , Premier of Alberta.
