Tool leads first ’billboard’ boxscore chart of 2022 with highest-grossing tour of january.

G Tool 22422

Tool is number one on the first Billboard Boxscore chart in 2022.

Maynard James Keenan and company had the highest grossing tour to start off the year, raking in more than $13 million over the course of 10 reported shows in January.

Elton John was second, with just over $10 million from five shows, followed by country stars Reba McEntire , Kane Brown and Eric Church .

Billboard notes that January is traditionally a slow month for concert ticket sales, adding that the Omicron surge of late 2021 and early 2022 postponed a number of high-profile shows, including Adele ‘s much-hyped Las Vegas residency, paving the way for Tool to take the top spot.

Tool is currently on tour in support of the band’s 2019 comeback album, Fear Inoculum . Their show in Washington, D.C. earlier this week was briefly halted due to a fan in the crowd experiencing a medical situation. Rock Feed obtained footage of Keenan pausing the show and instructing the audience to make way for EMTs. The show continued after the situation was addressed.

Elton John and Rolling Stones Among 2022’s Top-Earning Tours

Elton John and the Rolling Stones  sold more than half a billion dollars of total concert tickets in 2022 with their respective tours.

John earned over $334 million with 85 Farewell Yellow Brick Road dates, second only to Bad Bunny on Billboard 's 2022 Top Tours chart . The Stones came in at No. 6 with more than $179 million, an impressive number considering they played only 20 shows.

Four other rock tours earned over $100 million on the road last year, led by Red Hot Chili Peppers with $176 million from 31 shows, the combination of Def Leppard and Motley Crue with $173 million (35 shows), Paul McCartney with $105 million (16 concerts) and  Eagles with $104 million (40 shows).

Further down the list, Guns N' Roses earned $93 million from 27 shows, Genesis made $81 million from 35 farewell dates and Iron Maiden rang up $76 million from 47 shows. Roger Waters and Billy Joel also made the Top 40, with $66 and $65 million in respective ticket sales.

John's farewell tour, which began in September 2018 , is currently scheduled to end with a July 8 show in Stockholm. The Rolling Stones are reportedly working on a new album , which would be their first collection of original material since 2005's A Bigger Bang .

After focusing on North America this past summer, Motley Crue and Def Leppard will bring their co-headlining tour to the rest of the world in 2023, with new guitarist John 5 taking over for Mick Mars .

Billboard Hot 100: Every #1 song of 2022

billboard tour chart 2022

  • December 27, 2022 8:15AM

Mariah Carey Christmas

The Billboard Hot 100 singles chart measures the most popular songs in America every week from Friday to Thursday based on sales, online streams (audio and video), and radio airplay. Below see the list of every song that reached the top spot in 2022, updating weekly as each new chart is announced.

Taylor Swift, “Anti-Hero”

6 weeks at number-one November 5 – December 10

This is the ninth number-one single for Taylor Swift. It debuted in the top spot the same week its parent album “Midnights” launched at number-one on the Billboard 200. And it’s part of a historic sweep as Swift became the first artist ever to claim all of the top-10 slots on the Hot 100 in a single week.

Sam Smith and Kim Petras, “Unholy”

1 week at number-one October 29

This is the first number-one hit for both Sam Smith and Kim Petras. They make history as the first openly non-binary and trans solo artists, respectively, to top the Billboard Hot 100.

Steve Lacy, “Bad Habit”

3 weeks at number-one October 8 – October 22

This is the first number-one hit for Steve Lacy and also the first single he ever charted on the Billboard Hot 100. It debuted at number-100 back on July 16.

Nicki Minaj, “Super Freaky Girl”

1 week at number-one August 27

This single debuted at number-one as Minaj’s third chart-topping single and her first without any other accompanying artists. She previously led with “Trollz,” her collab with 6ix9ine , and “Say So,” her team-up with Doja Cat .

Beyonce, “Break My Soul”

2 weeks at number-one August 13 – August 20

The song rose to number-one on the Hot 100 the same week its parent album “Renaissance” debuted in the top spot on the Billboard 200 albums chart. It’s her eighth number-one single as a solo artist and her first number-one since “Single Ladies” in 2008 that wasn’t a collab. She also had four chart-toppers as a member of Destiny’s Child, giving her a total of 12 number-ones.

Lizzo, “About Damn Time”

2 weeks at number-one July 30 – August 6

This is Lizzo’s second single to reach number-one on the Billboard Hot 100, following “Truth Hurts,” which spent seven weeks on top in 2019. “About Damn Time” reached number-one the same week its parent album, “Special,” debuted at number-two on the Billboard 200.

Drake featuring 21 Savage, “Jimmy Cooks”

1 week at number-one July 2

“Jimmy Cooks” debuted at number-one the same week its parent album, Drake’s “Honestly, Nevermind,” debuted at number-one on the Billboard 200. This is Drake’s 11th number-one single on the Hot 100, which ties him with Whitney Houston for the seventh most chart-toppers in history. It’s 21 Savage’s second single to reach the pinnacle.

Future featuring Drake and Tems, “Wait for U”

1 week at number-one May 14

“Wait for U” debuted at number-one on the Hot 100 the same week Future’s album “I Never Liked You” launched at number-one on the Billboard 200. It’s the second chart-topping single of Future’s career and his first as a lead artist; he previously hit number-one as a featured artist on Drake’s “Way 2 Sexy” last fall. It’s the first number-one hit for Tems and the landmark 10th for Drake.

Jack Harlow, “First Class”

3 weeks at number-one April 23; May 21 – May 28

This was Harlow’s first time debuting at number-one and his first time topping the chart by himself. He previously reached the top spot in 2021 as a featured artist on Lil Nas X ‘s “Industry Baby.” The single returned to number-one four weeks later upon the release of Harlow’s album “Come Home the Kids Miss You.”

Harry Styles , “As It Was”

15 weeks at number-one April 16; April 30 – May 7; June 4 – June 25; July 9 – July 23; September 3 – October 1

The lead single from Styles’s album “Harry’s House,” this song became his second number-one hit on the Hot 100, following “Watermelon Sugar” in 2020. It was also his first song to debut at number-one and his first to spend multiple weeks in the top spot. It eventually became the first song ever to have five distinct runs at number-one, the longest-running number-one song by a British artist, the longest-running number-one by a singular performer with no accompanying artist, the fourth longest-running chart-topper of all time, and the longest-running song ever in the top two.

Glass Animals, “Heat Waves”

5 weeks at number-one March 12 – April 9

Originally released in 2020, “Heat Waves” made history for the longest ever climb to the top spot. It was on the chart for 58 weeks before finally reaching number-one on its 59th. It was the first number-one hit for the British band.

“Encanto” Cast, “We Don’t Talk About Bruno”

5 weeks at number-one February 5 – March 5

Written by Lin-Manuel Miranda and performed by “Encanto” voice actors Carolina Gaitán , Mauro Castillo , Adassa , Rhenzy Feliz , Diane Guerrero , and Stephanie Beatriz , “Bruno” was an unexpected crossover hit from the animated film’s soundtrack. It spent longer at number-one than any other song from a Disney movie.

Adele , “Easy on Me”

3 weeks at number-one in 2022 (10 weeks total) January 15 – January 29

Most of the song’s chart reign was in 2021 after it debuted in October. It was Adele’s fifth number-one hit following “Rolling in the Deep,” “Someone Like You,” “Set Fire to the Rain,” and “Hello.” Its 10-week reign tied “Hello” as her longest-running chart-topper.

Mariah Carey, “All I Want for Christmas Is You”

5 weeks at number-one in 2022 (11 weeks total) January 1 – January 8; December 17 – December 31

Released in 1994, Carey’s Christmas standard finally reached number-one in 2019 and has bounced back up to the top every holiday season since, totaling 11 weeks on top (so far). It was her 19th number-one hit on the Hot 100, extending her record for the most number-one hits by a solo artist and getting her one step closer to the all-time record of 20 number-one singles held by The Beatles .

The Billboard Hot 100 has been measuring the most popular songs since 1958, starting with Ricky Nelson ‘s “Poor Little Fool.” Since then more than 1,100 songs have reached the pinnacle, though Billboard’s methodology has changed over the years as music consumption has evolved.

For instance, sales used to be tracked by Nielsen from Monday to Sunday, but in 2015 that changed to Friday to Thursday. Also, in the early years of the charts sales were given more weight than radio airplay as the purchasing of singles was much more common than it would be in later years. Eventually that shifted as full-length albums became more prevalent and single sales diminished. In 1998 Billboard amended its rules yet again to allow a song to appear on the Hot 100 even if it was airplay-only and wasn’t available to purchase as a single. Then in 2007 Billboard started counting audio streaming performance towards the Hot 100. And in 2013 YouTube video streams were added to the formula.

In the Hot 100 era, The Beatles hold the record for the most number-one hits with 20 different chart leaders. They’re followed closely by Mariah Carey , who has had 19 songs reach number-one. Carey’s 1995 duet with Boyz II Men , “One Sweet Day,” set the record for the most weeks at number-one with 16. That record stood for more than two decades before it was tied by “ Despacito ” by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee featuring Justin Bieber in 2017, and then ultimately broken by Lil Nas X, whose “Old Town Road” featuring Billy Ray Cyrus , dominated the chart for 19 weeks in 2019. But the song named by Billboard as the number-one song of all time was The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights,” which spent only four weeks at number-one but obliterated the record for the most weeks in the top 10 with more than a year in that region.

As you can see from the above songs, history is still regularly being made on the Hot 100. Come back every week for more.

Only 3 Rock Artists With New Albums Land on 4 of Billboard’s 2022 Year-End Charts

Billboard has started revealing their year-end stats for the biggest charting acts, songs and albums of the year, and while things are looking a little light on the rock side for new releases, a growing trend is the continued strength of catalog releases from veteran rock acts.

When it comes down to acts supporting new music in 2022, one three have made the cut in four of Billboard's biggest categories - Top Billboard 200 Albums, Top Artists, Top Streaming Songs and Top Artists Duo/Group. They are Machine Gun Kelly , Imagine Dragons and Red Hot Chili Peppers .

Imagine Dragons actually fared the best of the three, with their Mercury - Act 1 album placing at No. 98 for the year on the Billboard 200 Album Chart. The band's prior album Evolve also hit No. 146. They were also the No. 33 charting artist, had the lone rock entry in the Streaming Songs year-end chart with their collaboration with JID on the song "Enemy" hitting No. 34 for the year and they placed second among the Top Artists that are duos or groups.

Machine Gun Kelly had the only other new rock release on the Billboard 200 Album Chart, as mainstream sellout hit No. 121 for the year. Another of his albums, Tickets to My Downfall , finished just two spots behind that at No. 123 for the year. He was also No. 62 on the Top Artists Chart.

As for Red Hot Chili Peppers, despite having two No. 1 albums in 2022, they did not make the cut for the Billboard 200 Albums year-end chart. They did, however, place at No. 79 on the Top Artists chart and No. 8 for the Top Artists Duo/Group.

But it's not all doom and gloom for rock on Billboard's year-end charts as older rock releases continue to have lasting staying power. A wealth of greatest hits collections and legendary albums found their way into the biggest sellers of the year, with Fleetwood Mac 's Rumours topping all rock albums at No. 30 for the year. Queen 's Greatest Hits also cracked the Top 50 at No. 31.

Others making the cut on the Billboard 200 Year-End Album Chart include Creedence Clearwater Revival (No. 55, Chronicle The 20 Greatest Hits ), Nirvana (No. 57 - Nevermind ), Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers (No. 78 - Greatest Hits ), Guns N' Roses (No. 81 - Greatest Hits ), AC/DC (No. 84 - Back in Black ), Journey (No. 93 - Greatest Hits ), Metallica (No. 102 - Metallica (Black Album) ), Arctic Monkeys (No. 105 - AM ), Foo Fighters (No. 109 - Greatest Hits ), Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band (No. 117 - Greatest Hits ), Nickelback (No. 119 - The Best of Nickelback: Vol. 1 ), Lynyrd Skynyrd (No. 122 - All Time Greatest Hits ), Bon Jovi (No. 144 - Greatest Hits: The Ultimate Collection ), Aerosmith (No. 184 - Devil's Got a New Disguise: The Very Best of Aerosmith ) and Blink-182 (No. 200 - Greatest Hits ). You can see the full Billboard 200 Album Year-End Chart here .

As for the Top Artists Chart, while Imagine Dragons (No. 33), Machine Gun Kelly (No. 62) and Red Hot Chili Peppers (No. 79) all made the cut, so did several rock acts that did not have new albums in 2022. Fleetwood Mac landed at No. 66, Queen at No. 67, Guns N' Roses at No. 84, Metallica at No. 89 and Nirvana at No. 99. See the Top Artists Chart here .

Meanwhile, Imagine Dragons and Red Hot Chili Peppers made the cut for the Top Artists Duo/Group at No. 2 and No. 8 respectively. They're joined in the Top 10 by Fleetwood Mac (No. 5), Queen (No. 6), Guns N' Roses (No. 9) and Metallica (No. 10)

The Weeknd's Postponed Stadium Tour of Australia Is Cancelled

Trending on billboard.

Pearl Jam was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in 2017, recognition of a mighty, three-decade-plus career that has yielded 12 top 10s on the Billboard 200 chart, including five leaders, and over 85 million albums shifted worldwide, according to reps.

The members of Pearl Jam—Vedder, Jeff Ament (bass), Stone Gossard (rhythm guitar), Mike McCready (lead guitar), and Matt Cameron (drums)—workshopped the album last year at Rick Rubin’s Shangri-La Studios in Malibu. With Watt at the desk, the creative process found turbo-packs, and the record came together in three weeks.

Vedder, McCready, and Ament premiered the LP at a listening party in West Hollywood earlier this year, attended by a few hundred family, friends, industry professionals and media, the Associated Press reported at the time.

“You all get together as a group as we’ve been doing for 30-plus years and you say, ‘Let’s try it again,’” Vedder reportedly told guests from the stage as he introduced the record. “No hyperbole, I think this is our best work.” In support of the new LP, Vedder and CO. will embark on a world tour. Those Dark Matter World Tour 2024 dates will see the band visit nine countries and 25 cities, kicking off at May 4 at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, BC.

Lynyrd skynyrd’s album jumps more than 100% in sales.

CALIFORNIA - OCTOBER 1976: Members of Southern Rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd (L-R Leon Wilkeson, Billy ... [+] Powell, Gary Rossington, Ronnie Van Zant and Allen Collins) pose by their trailer backstage at an outdoor concert in October, 1976 in California. (Photo by Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images)

Lynyrd Skynyrd is a band that won’t quit. Just when it seems like they’re ready to hang it all up, they hint–or outright announce–that more is on the way, whether that be music or concerts. One of the group’s recent releases, one which seemed to signify the end of it all, is back on the charts this week as the rockers continue rocking.

The band’s Last of the Street Survivors live recording reappears on this week’s Top Album Sales chart. The title is back on Billboard’s list of the bestselling albums in the U.S. at No. 41. It once rose as high as No. 17, and it’s now spent 15 frames on this roster, which is impressive for any live album.

In the past tracking frame, Last of the Street Survivors sold another 2,119 copies, according to Luminate. That’s up 139% from the week before, which is a huge jump for any title, let alone one that’s been out for several years.

Lynyrd Skynyrd released Last of the Street Survivors in December 2019. The set was recorded during their tour of the same name, which also included the word “farewell,” at least at the time. The trek was interrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic, and when the group resumed playing live, they had renamed the venture the Big Wheels Keep On Turning Tour, as it was no longer going to be their final outing.

As Last of the Street Survivors reappears on one Billboard chart, the band has a presence on several other lists as well. Lynyrd Skynyrd is one of those groups that’s still so popular to this day that they can almost always be found on one ranking or another.

Tiktok could be banned in 9 months here s what may stop that, sixers justified in fury toward officiating after game 2 meltdown vs. knicks.

As their live recording soars, the rock outfit’s All Time Greatest Hits is on the downswing. The compilation slips a few rungs on the Billboard 200, Top Rock & Alternative Albums, and Top Rock Albums charts this week.

Lynyrd Skynyrd just finished one leg of their current The Sharp Dressed Simple Man Tour with ZZ Top. The two rock bands have been entertaining crowds throughout the U.S. for much of this spring, and now they’re on a break for a few months. The groups are expected to return with more shows this coming summer.

What Taylor Swift's new album means for her $1 billion fortune

  • Taylor Swift's new album, " The Tortured Poets Department ," is almost guaranteed to be a bestseller.
  • But no matter how well it does, it won't be the way Swift earns most of her money this year.
  • The remaining leg of her Eras Tour is expected to add much more to Swift's billion-dollar fortune.

Insider Today

Taylor Swift released her new album, " The Tortured Poets Department ," at midnight, and, in what should be no surprise to anyone on this planet in the year 2024, it caused a scene.

Her album garnered millions of streams within hours. There's almost no doubt it'll top the Billboard chart like the 13 Swift albums before it.

But no matter how many platinum certifications it collects or streams it racks up on Spotify, "The Tortured Poets Department" won't be Swift's biggest money-maker this year.

The remaining leg of her Eras Tour — kicking off in Paris next month and running through December — is instead expected to be what contributes most to her fortune, which Bloomberg estimated to be $1.1 billion last year.

"Live music is the engine of the global music business," Clayton Durant, an adjunct professor at NYU Steinhardt's Music Business Program who's the founder of CAD Management, told Business Insider. "Her tour is probably going to earn 10 to 15 times more than her streaming."

Swift's Eras Tour brought in more than $1 billion in ticket sales last year over its 66 dates. By the end of this year, she's set to have played another 86. Swift's cut is unknown, but based on industry standards, she'll surely earn nine figures in 2024 from ticket sales.

Concerts don't only bring in money from ticket sales.

Pollstar estimates that Swifties spend an average of $40 a head on merch at her concerts — that adds up to about $175 million in gross merch sales last year. Swift's camp keeps the majority of that.

Bloomberg estimated that between box office and merchandise, Swift pocketed $225 million, pre-tax, from her first 57 Eras Tour dates. Career earnings from ticket sales and merchandise account for 34% of her total net worth, while earnings from music streaming and sales account for 18%, Bloomberg estimates.

Related stories

Swift isn't alone in making money on the road.

In 2021, the last year Billboard made a list of music's top earners, seven out of the 10 top money makers earned more than half of their income from touring.

But the music industry didn't always function this way. Before the advent of streaming, musicians made most of their fortune selling CDs, cassette tapes, and vinyl records .

"Physical music sales made up the bulk of artists' revenue pre-streaming, and that revenue was what enabled artists to tour. These days, the equation has flipped," Tatiana Cirisano, a senior music-industry analyst at MIDiA, told BI over email.

Streaming made listening to recorded music much cheaper. For less than the price of one CD — or for free, illegally or with ads — people could get all the songs they wanted.

"The moment Napster hit, it changed the paradigm, and it really honestly diluted the value of music," Durant said.

To be sure, Swift is still making tens of millions, if not more, on streaming and record sales each year — more than almost any other artist on the planet.

Streaming services such as Spotify pay out artists on a pro-rata model: There's a pot, made up of subscription and ad revenue, paid out to artists each year. Those with the biggest share of the platform's total streams get the biggest piece of it.

But "if you're an individual artist, you have to have a pretty massive audience to be able to earn a meaningful share of that revenue — which is paid out to you after your label gets its cut," Cirisano said.

Last year, Swift was the most streamed artist on both Apple and Spotify. One of every 78 songs streamed in the US last year was a Swift song, according to the music-data firm Luminate. She'll probably rank at or near the top again, between " The Tortured Poets Department " and a streaming lift from the second leg of her Eras Tour.

Swift is also set to earn more than most artists from physical music sales. Last year, she was responsible for one out of every 15 vinyl records sold, according to Luminate. Cirisano said Swift's rabid followers saw physical records as "a symbol of fandom" and a way to support Swift.

That said, without Eras, Swift would just be a poor centimillionaire.

Imagine Dragons’ sixth studio album LOOM represents the pinnacle of their artistic journey of self-discovery and marks the best body of work they’ve ever made. LOOM , produced entirely by Imagine Dragons and their longtime collaborators Mattman and Robin, finds the perfect balance between the classic sounds that have made them superstars and the freshness that brought them joy in the studio. Featuring 9 brand new tracks including hit single “Eyes Closed”, LOOM signifies new beginnings on the horizon – the excitement for a new day, moments yet to come.

Last year, the members of Imagine Dragons found themselves with a rare and well-deserved break from the road—perhaps their longest in many years. So, they made the most of it by devoting that time to family and friends. Catalyzed by this respite with a refreshed perspective, the band rallied together in the studio and mined the same well of inspiration that fed their most beloved material. The musicians reflected on the past in order to catapult into a future where stylistic boundaries have disappeared entirely and anything is possible creatively. This journey has brought them to their most dynamic and definitive body of work to date, LOOM .

To herald LOOM , the band recently shared their soaring new anthem entitled “Eyes Closed.” Check out the video HERE . The track illuminates their penchant for boundary-breaking. Stretching the limits of the soundscape almost to the breaking point, they harness a burst of energy with a rafter-reaching refrain primed to soar on the upcoming summer tour.

It’s the year of the Dragons …

ABOUT IMAGINE DRAGONS:

Imagine Dragons continue to redefine rock in the 21 st century. Filling stadiums, crafting cloud-rattling anthems, and breaking records at every turn, diamond-certified GRAMMY® Award-winning Las Vegas quartet Imagine Dragons occupy rarified air as one of the biggest rock bands in the world. Tallying cumulative sales of 74 million album equivalents, 65 million digital songs, and over 160 billion streams, they stand out as “the only band in history to earn four RIAA Diamond singles , ” namely “Radioactive” (16x-platinum), “Believer” (13x-platinum), “Thunder” (12x-platinum) and “Demons” (11x-platinum). Since emerging in 2009, they’ve scored five consecutive Top 10 debuts on the Billboard Top 200 with Night Visions [2012] (7x-platinum) (KIDinaKORNER/Interscope), Smoke+Mirrors [2015] (platinum) (KIDinaKORNER/Interscope), Evolve [2017] (triple-platinum) (KIDinaKORNER/Interscope), Origins [2018] (platinum)(KIDinaKORNER/Interscope), and Mercury – Act 1 [2021]( KIDinaKORNER/Interscope). With the release of Mercury – Act 2 (KIDinaKORNER/Interscope) in 2022, they completed their first double-album opus produced by the legendary Rick Rubin. The hit single “Bones,” featured on Mercury Act 2, went to number one at Alternative Radio and remains in the Global Top 50 on Spotify. The band’s hit collaboration with East Atlanta-based rapper J.I.D, “Enemy,” has racked up billions of global streams and landed at #6 on the IFPI Global Singles Chart for 2022. Dominating radio, they remain one of only four bands to ever achieve consecutive Top 5 singles at Alternative radio, and the only band to repeat this feat. Most recently, Imagine Dragons made history on Spotify, as “Bad Liar” became their 10th song to surpass 1 billion streams. The band now holds the crown for the group with most billion-plus streamed songs, becoming the first in the platform’s history to have ten songs reach this milestone. Meanwhile, Imagine Dragons’ music videos for hits “Thunder” and “Believer” have garnered an astounding 2 billion YouTube views, while videos for “Radioactive” and “Demons” have surpassed over 1 billion views.  They’ve collaborated with everyone from Kendrick Lamar, Lil Wayne, and Wiz Khalifa to Avicii and film composer Hans Zimmer. Giving back, they’ve raised millions for various causes, including their pediatric cancer charity the Tyler Robinson Foundation, and frontman Dan Reynolds’ LOVELOUD Foundation and festival in support of LGBTQ+ youth. In 2022, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky named them ambassadors for UNITED 24, which benefits humanitarian aid in Ukraine. Imagine Dragons earned an impressive four nominations for the 2022 American Music Awards including “Favorite Pop Duo or Group,” “Favorite Rock Artist,” “Favorite Rock Album” and “Favorite Rock Song.” The band was also nominated for “Group of 2022” for the 2022 People’s Choice Awards.
