We’re headed around the world in pursuit of exciting cities that embrace the LGBTIQ+ community with open arms (not to mention sequins and confetti). These are the kinds of places that understand that life is meant for celebrating – whether through rowdy drag shows that thrill with sass, joyous street parties that bring out crowds of thousands or thumping dance clubs that party on till sunrise.

Follow us to some of the most progressive, inclusive and accepting destinations around the world. Places where you can truly show your spirit of pride.

1. London, United Kingdom

Pride 2024:  The biggest Pride celebration in the UK, and one of the largest in the world,  London Pride  takes place this year on June 29.

Must-visit LGBTIQ+   neighborhood:  Soho  in London ’s West End  has historically been the city’s epicenter of queer life. To this day, it remains a hub of the city's LGBTIQ+ bars, shops and clubs.

London has been a most prominent center of queer culture for hundreds of years , dating all the way back to the city’s 18th-century “Molly Houses,” meeting places for LGBTIQ+ people. London remains a massively queer city and is known for a brimming underground scene that can be found at rotating parties, such as those put on by  Cybil’s House .

A must-visit for any LGBTIQ+ traveler is the  Admiral Duncan , a gay pub in Soho that was the site of a bombing perpetrated by a homophobic neo-Nazi in 1999. In the aftermath of the tragedy, it became a site of resistance and resilience – and remains so to this day.

2. Provincetown, Massachusetts, USA

Pride 2025:   Provincetown’s 7th annual Pride  celebration takes place from May 31 to June 2, with a diverse lineup of events, from the town’s famous parade to a comedy showcase, 5k race, yoga sessions and more.

Must-visit LGBTIQ+   neighborhood: The entire town!  Provincetown is a flourishing place for queer life. Located at the easternmost tip of Cape Cod , P-town has been a summer escape for the LGBTIQ+ community for over 60 years. From riotous parties at  A-House  to (technically illegal) nude sunbathing at  Herring Cove Beach , there’s no shortage of fun to be had here. Plan your visit to align with one of the town’s many queer festivals, including Bear Week , Girl Splash , TransWeek and more.

3. Auckland, New Zealand

Pride 2024 : Being in the southern hemisphere, Auckland  held its  Pride celebration  in the month February. But it’s not too early to plan a trip for 2025!

Must-visit LGBTIQ+   neighborhood:  Karangahape Road – or “K Road” to locals – is where you'll find most of Auckland’s LGBTIQ+ nightlife. Many Aucklanders make a night of it by starting at  The Eagle , a local, unpretentious watering hole that welcomes all comers from the LGBTIQ+ community. Next is an inevitable stop at  Family Bar , located conveniently across the street, which has more of a club vibe, complete with bustling dance floor and weekly drag shows.

New Zealand has long been known as a friendly and welcoming country, with robust anti-discrimination laws and legalized same-sex marriage since 2013. Since then, the nation as a whole, and especially its major cities like Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch , have become known as some of the most LGBTIQ-friendly places anywhere in the world.

These are Auckland’s best neighborhoods

4. Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Pride 2024:  Puerto Vallarta Pride  takes place from May 20–26  May, and is one of Mexico ’s biggest Pride celebrations, drawing a fun mix of locals and visitors.

Must-visit LGBTIQ+   neighborhood:  Emiliano Zapata (also called Old Town) is where you’ll find the vast majority of Puerto Vallarta ’s queer nightlife. But the entire city is an LGBTIQ+ vacation magnet, so it’s virtually impossible to find any section of town that isn’t welcoming.

Throughout the years, Mexico has become more and more LGBTIQ-friendly, and the oceanfront resort town of Puerto Vallarta is one of the nation’s most progressive cities. All the big-brand resorts are LGBTIQ-inclusive, and there are even LGBTIQ-exclusive hotels, like the  Almar Resort . For socializing and meeting other members of the community , the options are endless. From the beachy, indoor/outdoor  Mr Flamingo , to the comic book–inspired  Blondies Loft + Slushbar  and the sleek and trendy  La Noche , there’s no shortage of places to find fun. And that’s not to mention all  the fantastic beaches , with Playa de los Muertos  known as PV’s “gay beach.”

Alluring day trips from Puerto Vallarta

5. Barcelona, Spain

Pride 2024: July 18–21.  Barcelona Pride ’s official 2024 lineup and event details are still to come.

Must-visit LGBTIQ+   neighborhood:  In the heart of Barcelona ,  L’Eixample  is one of the biggest LGBTIQ+ boroughs in all of Europe. (It’s even been lovingly given the nickname “Gaixample,”) Here, you’ll find LGBTIQ-owned beauty salons, bookshops, saunas, cafes, bars, restaurants, sex shops and everything in between.

Spain has long been at the forefront of LGBTIQ+ rights. The nation legalized same-sex marriage back in 2005 and has since enacted numerous laws that ensure equality and protection for the queer community, including those who are nonbinary and trans.  Platja de la Mar Bella  is Barcelona’s premier gay beach – and it also happens to be clothing-optional, with most beachgoers baring it all. Among the numerous other LGBTIQ+ hotspots,  Arena Classic  is a popular lesbian bar that’s a staple to the local community, while Warhol-inspired club  Candy Darling  sees partygoers dance nightly until the early hours of morning, and sometimes until after the sun comes up. This is Spain, after all.

6. New York City, New York, USA

Pride 2024:  One of the largest Pride celebrations on the planet,  NYC Pride  kicks into high gear toward the end of June, culminating in the annual Pride March on June 30, which draws up to 2 million revelers. If that’s not enough, kick off the month with Queens Pride  in Jackson Heights, a fabulous parade and street party that takes place in one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the world.

Must-visit LGBTIQ+   neighborhood:  No LGBTIQ+ visit to New York City would be complete without stop in the West Village . It’s here that the Stonewall uprising took place during the summer of 1969, after police raided the Stonewall Inn  and began arresting patrons and bartenders. When these LGBTIQ+ folks fought back, the modern gay rights movement was born.

New York has a deep history and profound connection to the LGBTIQ+ community – both painful (this was the epicenter of the HIV/AIDS crisis) and joyous ( Harlem  gifted the world ball culture). No queer traveler here can fail to feel it.

These days, LGBTIQ+ folks tend to turn up in Hell’s Kitchen, on the west side of Manhattan, whose main drags of Ninth and Tenth Aves are packed with LGBTIQ-owned restaurants, barbershops, cafes and bars (denoted by frequent rainbow flags). Go-to HK nightlife spots include the wildly popular  Industry  bar; and the campy, country-themed  Flaming Saddles Saloon , where short-shorts-wearing bartenders frequently two-step on the bar.

7. Berlin, Germany

Pride 2024:  The culmination of  Berlin ’s month of Pride festivities (which kick off on June 28) is  Christopher Street Day  on July 27.  Germany ’s largest Pride celebration, the annual festival is named in honor of the Manhattan street where the historic Stonewall Inn is located.

Must-visit LGBTIQ+   neighborhood:  The heart of Berlin’s LGBTIQ+ scene is in Schöneberg , which has had gay and lesbian bars since the 1920s, making it one of the oldest gay boroughs on the planet.

Berlin has a fascinating LBGTIQ+ history. In the ’20s and ’30s, queer culture flourished in the city, before being almost completely eradicated by the Nazis during World War II. After the war, the community was forced to rbuild from the ground up, ultimately creating the buzzing and beautiful scene of today.

Berlin is famous for being a city where people stay out clubbing until the sun rises at institutions like  GMF  or Berghain (good luck getting in). But Berlin has so much more than dance floors. Its  Gay Hostel  is a unique lodging opportunity that’s only available to LGBTIQ+ people under the age of 38, creating a safe space where you’re bound to meet some new friends. The city is also home to the  Schwules Museum , one of the only museums in the entire world dedicated to researching and preserving the history of LGBTIQ+ cultures around the world.

8. Sydney, Australia

Pride 2024: Taking advantage of southern-hemisphere summer, Sydney’s annual Pride extravaganza is the Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras , which took place in February. Mark your calendars now: the next edition runs from February 14 to March 2, 2025.

Must-visit LGBTIQ+   neighborhood:  The heart of gay Sydney is  Darlinghurst , which is conveniently located near Sydney’s central business district and is easily accessible by the city’s mass-transit system.

Australia has long been a welcoming place for the queer community, with Sydney in particular earning a global reputation for its inclusivity. Not only does the city have excellent LGBTIQ+ nightlife – such as the expansive, three-story  Stonewall Hotel  – but it also has a rich cultural scene that celebrates LGBTIQ+ art and history. The Darlinghurst Bookshop  has been selling queer books, magazines and films since the ’80s, and the city hosts the yearly  Queer Screen  film festival.

9. Toronto, Canada

Pride 2024:   Toronto ’s  Pride celebration  consists of a parade, parties and a popular street fair from June 28–30, offering a more laid-back and kid-friendly Pride experience.

Must-visit LGBTIQ+   neighborhood:  Queen St has been Toronto’s main LGBTIQ+ stretch for decades. (You might recognize it as the filming location of the US version of the groundbreaking drama  Queer as Folk .)

Canada  as a whole is known for being welcoming and is considered one of the friendliest places on the planet. Church St’s oldest LGBTIQ+ establishment, Woody’s  dates to 1989, and remains one a staple of Toronto’s queer culture. For something you can only find in Toronto, visit the  Buddies in Bad Times  theater, a queer performance space and cabaret that transforms into a nightclub on non-show nights.

People celebrate on a float boat at the Amsterdam Pride Parade, Amsterdam, the Netherlands

10. Amsterdam, Netherlands

Pride 2024: July 27–August 4.  Amsterdam Pride  is one of the world’s more unique celebrations, since its parade takes place on boats floating along the city’s famous canals.

Must-visit LGBTIQ+   neighborhood: While you’ll find LGBTIQ+ venues throughout this famously progressive city , much action is centered within the Reguliersdwarsstraat neighborhood , located in the center of town.

The Netherlands was the first country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage, in 2001 and, has remained one of the most LGBTIQ-inclusive countries on the planet thanks to its numerous anti-discrimination laws and policies that protect civil rights for the queer community.

First opened by flamboyant lesbian impresario Bet van Beeran in 1927,  Cafe ’t Mandje  remains a staple of the city’s queer scene, with its eclectic interior and friendly crowd. If late-night adventures are more your style, check out  EXIT Café , a thumping LGBTIQ+ bar that welcomes all comers and allies. Best of all, EXIT is open later than most bars in the city, making it perfect for night owls and those looking for an epic night on the town. First-time visitors should stop in at the  Pink Point , a dedicated LGBTIQ+ information booth that provides travelers with tips, recommendations and information on all things queer in the city.

All you need to know before heading to Amsterdam

11. Palm Springs, California, USA

Pride 2024:  Thanks to the city’s year-round warm weather,  Palm Springs Pride  takes place much later than most, this year from October 31 to November 3.

Must-visit LGBTIQ+   neighborhood:  All of Palm Springs is an LGBTIQ-centric neighborhood. In fact, Palm Springs has such a queer presence that even adjacent towns like Cathedral City and Palm Desert have drawn growing LGBTIQ+ populations, and have holding their own, discrete Pride celebrations .

During Hollywood’s heyday, actors, actresses, directors, producers and agents escaped to Palm Springs ro relax and let their hair down. Heavily represented among these visitors, the legend has it, was a heavy contingent of LBGTIQ+ artists, in search of privacy and discretion. This vibe still exists in this desert town to this day, with  numerous LGBTIQ+ resorts  dotting the town, many of them clothing-optional. For a bit of the city’s famed nightlife, be sure to check out longstanding staples like  Chill Bar  and  Hunters .

Young people dance in the streets during the Pride celebrations in Tel Aviv, Israel

12. Tel Aviv, Israel

Pride 2024:   Tel Aviv Pride , taking place this year on Friday June 7, is a celebration beloved by Israelis and international visitors.

Must-visit LGBTIQ+   neighborhood: While sophisticated  Tel Aviv doesn’t have a specific “gayborhood,” the entire city is LGBTIQ-friendly. In fact, in 2016 the  Boston Globe  reported that a full quarter of the city’s population identifies as LGBTIQ+ – making it truly one of the gayest places on Earth.

While much of Israel remains socially traditional, with gay marriage not legally recognized in the country, Tel Aviv does things differently. Look no further than  Hilton Beach , a hub for the LGBTIQ+ community (you’ll see many deeply bronzed, Speedo-wearing boys on parade). One of the city’s most popular locales for queer people and their allies is  Shpagat , a club that draws a great mix of locals and tourists, ensuring that you’ll always be meeting someone new.

8 LGBTQ+-Friendly Travel Destinations to Consider This Pride Month and Beyond

Whether you're looking for beautiful beaches, a dose of culture, or a bustling party scene, these destinations belong on your travel bucket list.

“Having LGBTQ+-friendly travel destinations is not only vital for the LGBTQ+ community but also for promoting complete equality and inclusivity for all people,” says Michael King-Hew, CEO of Kamalame Cay in Bahamas’ Andros Island. “By creating LGBTQ+-friendly travel destinations, we send a powerful message that everyone, regardless of who they are, deserves respect, acceptance, and the opportunity to explore the world without discrimination.”

Despite being in the Bahamas, which is generally notorious for upholding more traditional views on sexuality, the mission of Kamalame Cay is to “lead with love.” And with Michael and his partner David at the helm, love is exactly what you feel after stepping off the resort’s ferry and onto the shell-adorned sand. Though days are spent in secluded villas and what is essentially a private beach, the staff welcomes visitors from all walks of life during mealtimes, boat trips, and oversea bungalow spa treatments, creating a true sense of community in an oasis that hosts only 110 people at capacity.

“But for LGBTQ+ travelers visiting less-welcoming destinations, it is crucial to prioritize personal safety while advocating for complete equality and inclusivity,” King-Hew stresses, adding that researching the destination's laws and customs can help navigate potential challenges.

He also recommends connecting with local LGBTQ+ organizations or online communities, which can provide support and guidance to first-time visitors. “It is important to remember that promoting respect and understanding is an ongoing process, and by being visible, respectful, and engaging with local communities, LGBTQ+ travelers can contribute to creating positive change,” he adds.

While finding accepting, welcoming resorts like Kamalame Cay is not always easy, especially for the on-the-go traveler who may not have the time to sift through options, we’ve gathered eight LGBTQ-friendly travel destinations and accompanying hotels to consider for your next getaway.

For the Art and Design Lover: London, England

london city skyline

There is no shortage of eye-catching architecture across the pond, ranging from Victorian townhomes with tulip-lined terraces to contemporary skyscrapers like the egg-shaped Gherkin or pyramid-inspired Shard. London’s diverse neighborhoods make it a hub of extensive walking tours where visitors can spend hours exploring what makes each part of town unique, all while hitting up some of the most world-renowned restaurants, museums, and shops along the way.

For the Foodie: Buenos Aires, Argentina

buenos aires skyline

Epicurean-friendly Buenos Aires is so much more than a destination for top-tier red meat. The coastal metropolis, which showcases a heavy Italian influence, is a hub of inspired cuisine, ranging from plant-based bites at MARTi barra , modernized Jewish classics at Mishiguene , and more traditional comfort foods at El Preferido de Palermo and Don Julio .

You can also wander into the city’s many markets to nosh on small dishes like empanadas or book a tour through Mai10 for a more personalized foodie experience, curated by locals.

Where to Stay: Palacio Duhau Park Hyatt

For the Party Person: Mykonos, Greece

sunset on the island of santorini, greece

Mykonos has essentially become synonymous with luxury gay travel, attracting beautiful people from all over the world who want to party on yachts, drink at posh clubs, and dine at Michelin-starred restaurants. Though wealth and status are flaunted like a limited-edition Birkin bag (which you may just see), you can allow all inhibitions and judgments to fall by the wayside as you spend an entire evening on the dance floor.

Where to Stay: Belvedere Hotel

For the History Buff: Amsterdam, Netherlands

night city view of amsterdam, the netherlands

If spending time galavanting through world-class museums sounds more like your speed, don’t sleep on Amsterdam. The progressive city has its fair share of late-night antics, but its history is also rich with stories and events, both tragic and inspiring, that are worth taking the time to learn about. And Amsterdam makes it easy with many city passes that allow you to conveniently hop from place to place and enter museums and art galleries with one set fee.

Where to Stay: Anantara Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky

For the Spiritual Folks: Bali, Indonesia

ulun danu bratan temple at sunrise, bali, indonesia

Known as the “land of the Gods,” Bali attracts wellness-minded tourists in need of rest, relaxation, and rejuvenation. The green oasis has become a respite for those in need of a mental reset and a bit of inspiration from Mother Nature with rainforests teeming with an abundance of waterfalls and wildlife. Despite the region’s anti-LGBTQ+ laws, it is rarely, if ever, an issue with locals who welcome guests with open arms and open hearts.

Recommended by King-Hew himself, the Capella Ubud is nestled in Bali’s serene rainforest and offers a tranquil and inclusive retreat that “embraces complete equality for all guests,” allowing them to connect with nature, Balinese culture, and each other.

Where to Stay: Capella Ubud

For the Single Traveler: Sitges, Spain

aerial view of the touristic town of sitges in barcelona, catalonia, spain

Sometimes the allure of solo travel is to meet a potential soulmate. And while we’re not suggesting this is going to yield a full Eat, Pray, Love experience, Sitges is the perfect backdrop for a potentially romantic getaway. Chock-full of LGBTQ+ singles from all over the world, the locale hosts those who appreciate the finer things in life: exploration, fine dining, bar-hopping, and, perhaps most important, interacting with those around you.

Where to Stay: Hotel Casa Vilella

For the Beach-Goer: Curaçao

willemstad

Arguably the most LGTBQ-friendly island in the Caribbean (it was the first to host a Pride parade in 2012), turquoise-lined Curaçao boasts some of the most stunning beaches, coves, and cliffside ocean views in the world. Locals are also hyperaware that the influx of tourism bolsters their economy, which inspires them to be even more accepting and obliging to anyone who has gone out of their way to make the journey. Whether you prefer to snorkel and SCUBA dive or lay out and forage for shells, the Dutch-influenced locale serves as an ideal backdrop for anyone who vibes best with water.

Where to Stay: Baoase Resort

For Families: St. Petersburg, Florida

st pete aerial view

As the only U.S.-based city on this list, sunny St. Pete has emerged as a hotbed of arts and culture with dozens of street-lined galleries and the famed Dalí Museum. It’s also an ideal setting for families who want to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life without having to book a flight across the world with kids in tow. And while Florida has garnered plenty of negative attention when it comes to the stripping of LGBTQ rights, the coastal town is home to one of the most flourishing queer populations not only in the Sunshine State, but also the entire country.

12 LGBTQ+-friendly Resorts in the U.S. and Caribbean for a Fun and Inclusive Getaway

These are 12 of the best resorts for LGBTQ+ travelers, with inclusive programming and charitable initiatives.

best lgbt friendly travel destinations

Though the future feels uncertain for queer individuals across many U.S. states, there’s no shortage of top-tier vacation destinations that have embraced support for the LGBTQ+ community, ensuring that each guest can feel comfortable during their stay. As you plan your next getaway, the following properties offer a wealth of luxe amenities, ample adventure opportunities, and — most importantly — the freedom to live as your truest self alongside your partner without fear.

Ocean Edge Resort

Courtesy of Ocean Edge Resort

Located on the idyllic north shore of Cape Cod, Ocean Edge Resort is one of the Bay State’s top spots for a relaxing getaway. During the height of summer, the property’s sprawling beach offers ample opportunity to sunbathe, spot native birds, and enjoy a cocktail at Beach Bar, while Ocean Terrace is perfect for experiencing New England’s famous seafood scene. In recent years, the property has launched LGBTQ+ campaigns like Pride Trailblazers, a June installation that highlighted famous figures within the community — and as a bonus, the LGBTQ+ destination of Provincetown is just a 40-minute drive past property limits.

Harrah's Resort Southern California

Courtesy of Harrah's

Harrah's Resort Southern California has been a stalwart supporter of LGBTQ+ rights for years on end. Don’t believe us? Just ask Jane Lynch, the resort’s mayor since 2022. While current initiatives range from a summer print campaign with Rage magazine to an ongoing partnership with The Trevor Project, this scenic property isn’t shy about opening its wallet either, with more than $500,000 donated to San Diego Pride over the years. In addition to feeling safe and supported, queer guests at Harrah’s Resort can also look forward to spectacular amenities, with a massive casino, a 400-foot lazy river, and more than 15 drinking and dining concepts across the property.

In need of a scenic escape into Pennsylvania’s Laurel Highlands? The palatial Nemacolin has got you covered. Measuring more than 2,000 acres, this colossal estate offers a touch of storied English elegance on American soil, crowned with the dazzling Tudor Revival-style Chateau and offering amenities like Jeep off-roading, golfing, and even visits with the property’s resident African lions. Though the resort itself has a historic feel, the atmosphere is anything but antiquated, with past programs including 2022’s Dive & Drag, an electrifying event held to raise funds for Pennsylvania’s queer impact group, the Persad Center.

La Concha Renaissance Resort

Courtesy of La Concha

Condado Beach is San Juan’s top spot to experience Puerto Rico’s gay scene, and for a deep dive into the surrounding culture, there are no better accommodations than those at La Concha Renaissance Resort . While the beach is certainly the main attraction around here, the multi-level infinity pool and on-property casino add to the already abundant charm, while Sereno Beach is the perfect spot for a pregame cocktail before hitting Viejo San Juan. Not a fan of the party life? No worries — La Concha also specializes in curated activities ranging from outdoor mindfulness experiences to exploring Puerto Rico’s verdant El Yunque Rainforest.

Palms Casino Resort

There’s no shortage of dazzling properties to enjoy across Vegas, but when it comes to queer-curated events and activities, it’s tough to beat the Palms Casino Resort . Back in October 2022, the property kicked off Vegas Pride with signature cocktails, a $50,000 check to the LGBTQ Center of Southern Nevada, and a whole lot of dazzling drag performances — and the festivities weren’t just a one-off show. Since then, the Palms’ polished Ghostbar has seen recurring LGBTQ+-focused events throughout 2023 with the launch of GLAM.

Sand Castle on the Beach

Courtesy of Sandcastle on the Beach

Quick beach access, two freshwater pools, and complimentary breakfast are just a few of the perks awaiting guests at Sand Castle on the Beach , a charming gay-owned abode found on the island of St. Croix. During daylight hours, visitors can take full advantage of outdoor adventure opportunities with complimentary kayaks and snorkel gear. History buffs can find a wealth of storied attractions just 30 minutes away in Christiansted, but be sure to head back before sunset to snag a cocktail at Beach Side Café, the property’s top spot for flavorful island fare.

Inn at Little Washington

Just 90 minutes outside of the nation’s capital, the gay-owned Inn at Little Washington has hosted Capitol Hill’s most prestigious politicians since its launch in 1978 — and all it takes is one bite to understand what keeps these dignitaries coming back year after year. Helmed by world-class chef Patrick O'Connell, the property’s dazzlingly beautiful three-Michelin-star restaurant has mastered the art of American fare accented with classic French techniques, offering a seven-course tasting menu (and a fully vegetarian option) alongside more than 14,000 wines and Faira, the property’s beloved cow-themed cheese cart.

Montage Palmetto Bluff

The pristine beauty of South Carolina’s Lowcountry is on full display at Montage Palmetto Bluff , the Palmetto State’s crown jewel for eco-adventure infused with a serious dose of luxury. Beyond the palatial riverside cottages, lavish on-property spa, and cozy restaurants offering hearty Southern cuisine, Palmetto Bluff is also an advocate for marginalized communities across the nation, with the Well Living campaign highlighting twelve unique causes throughout 2023. In June, the property is celebrating Pride Month with a wide array of initiatives spanning from specialty cocktails benefitting The Trevor Project to a charity 5K to fund this year’s Lowcountry Pride.

The Lodge at Blue Sky

One of Utah’s most gay-friendly destinations, Park City is known as the home of the Sundance Film Festival, but this star-studded event is far from the only attraction that keeps tourists flowing in. Case in point: The Lodge at Blue Sky , a 3,500-acre expanse of rustic villas and suites crowned with a spectacular lodge. Outdoor adventure reigns supreme around here, with guests taking full advantage of the surrounding ski slopes in winter, while summer provides opportunities to fly fish, hike, and befriend the resort’s many rescue horses.

Cavallo Point

San Francisco has earned worldwide acclaim as a hub for LGBTQ+ culture, and if you want to kick back at a relaxing estate that’s just past city limits, Cavallo Point is the place to go. After a few days spent trekking up SF’s hilly streets, a deep tissue massage at the Healing Arts Center & Spa is the perfect cure for sore muscles, while on-property restaurant Farley is a top spot for a tasty post-exploration meal in full view of the Golden Gate Bridge. On the other hand, if you haven’t gotten quite enough exercise during your visit, the resort also offers private hiking tours, guided kayaking excursions, and complimentary e-bikes.

Fairmont Orchid

In the northwestern reaches of the Island of Hawaiʻi, a paradise for fine dining, wildlife watching, and seaside relaxation awaits at the Fairmont Orchid . The 10,000-square-foot outdoor pool and AAA Four-diamond Brown’s Beach House are just a couple of the factors that make the resort shine, but beyond the lavish amenities, the Fairmont Orchid has firmly established itself as a force for good within the Hawaiʻi hospitality scene. To preserve Polynesian species, the property partners with the Waikōloa Dry Forest Initiative, while 2021 saw the launch of the Pride Package, a year-long deal that donated 20 percent of each sale to Kona Pride, Inc.

Kimpton Shorebreak Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort

Courtesy of Kimpton Shorebreak Fort Lauderdale

From the tip of Key West to the urban sprawl of Greater Miami, South Florida is one massive treasure trove of queer culture — something the Shorebreak Fort Lauderdale knows very well. While many of the area’s hottest bars, clubs, and other attractions are within arms reach of the property, the grounds themselves are pretty stellar as well, providing guests with two heated outdoor pools and gorgeous manicured courtyards to relax in. To sweeten the deal, the building itself even has an added historic edge to it, first opened in 1949 and frequented by the local queer community ever since.

A large fish and a scuba diver underwater with coral around them

Located off the coast of Queensland, Australia , the world’s largest reef system is home to 1,600 species of fish, 134 species of sharks and rays, 30 species of whales and dolphins, and 700 species of hard and soft coral.

If you’re interested in snorkeling, book a day tour with Wavelength Reef Cruises , an eco-certified company that offers smaller group excursions and is owned by local marine biologists. The company visits popular reefs such as Tongue, Opal, and St. Crispin (we spotted dolphins and whales en route), with the skipper picking the best spot based on the day’s conditions. Other companies, such as Quicksilver Cruises , offer excursions where you can choose between scuba diving and snorkeling.

LGBTQIA+ lowdown:   Cairns and Port Douglas, gateways to the Great Barrier Reef, are very queer friendly.

Where to stay:   The adults-only Pink Flamingo Resort in Port Douglas offers colorful private villas (with an outdoor shower and hammock). Turtle Cove is an adults-only beachfront resort (with clothing-optional sections) for LGBTQIA+ people and allies in Wangetti (about 30 minutes from Port Douglas). The queer-owned Gunnadoo Holiday , with views of the Coral Sea, is near the Daintree Rainforest in Rocky Point.

New York City, New York

New York City ’s history, especially in Greenwich Village, can be explored via Christopher Street Tours, which gives the inside scoop on historic sites and LGBTQIA+ pioneers. We could spend all day people-watching in Washington Square Park, but so many other great sites are nearby: the Stonewall Inn, a historic landmark where the 1969 riots helped launch the gay rights movement ; Marie’s Crisis Café , a classic LGBTQIA+ piano bar (dating back to 1929), where you can belt out show tunes; and Henrietta Hudson for lesbian karaoke and dancing. And don’t overlook the Museum of the City of New York, which details the city’s history and has a moving exhibit on progress for LGBTQIA+ rights.

LGBTQIA+ lowdown:   NYC has the largest queer population in the United States and is an essential location of the LGBTQIA+ rights movement in the country.

Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Phnom Penh with the Independence Monument at sunset and palm trees hovering over homes and buildings

In Cambodia , same-sex activity is legal and same-sex relationships are widely accepted, especially in major cities. The buzzing capital Phnom Penh has a small LGBTQIA+ scene with a few bars and restaurants central to the community.

For drinks, head to Blue Chilli, the longest running LGBTQIA+ bar in the country, with drag shows, dancing, and cocktails. At Space Hair Salon and Bar , you can get your hair done and your drinks poured in one place; the Pride of Phnom Penh is a bijou music bar with LGBTQIA+ crowds; and the Toolbox is “geared” toward gay men.

LGBTQIA+ lowdown:   Pride week is typically in May. When in temples, make sure to wear appropriate clothing that covers your shoulders (shawls are not permitted in some places). Just as in some other areas of Asia, public displays of affection are not especially encouraged (for any type of couple).

Where to stay:   Arthur & Paul is a spa boutique hotel for men only. Mad Monkey Hostel has dorms and private rooms, plus a beer garden, restaurant, and pool. It also hosts Pride events and gives back to the community through clean water projects and beach cleanups. Palace Gate Hotel & Resort is on the riverfront with sophisticated rooms and a lush pool area.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Revelers take part in the Pride Parade at Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro, a large rainbow flag blankets the street.

Rio , in eastern Brazil , is world renowned for its Carnival celebration but its beaches, mountains, and other natural spaces beckon year-round. Start at Ipanema Beach, a hot spot for the queer community and one of the cleanest beaches in the city (here you’ll find Rua Farme de Amoedo, a famous LGBTQIA+ street with some of the city’s best queer nightlife). Also check out Copacabana Beach, which also has a lively queer crowd, music, restaurants, and bars. Or visit Praiade Abricó beach, the city’s only nudist option.

LGBTQIA+ lowdown: Rio is the queer mecca of Brazil, priding itself on initiatives like vocational training courses for trans people, anti-bullying projects to support queer students, and legislation outlawing discrimination in the city’s nightclubs.

Where to stay: Praia Ipanema Hotel has modern rooms and balconies with sweeping views of the beach. MGallery Santa Teresa Hotel is a luxury boutique hotel on a historic coffee farm dating back to the 1850s. It boasts a spa and Michelin-listed restaurant. Or try LaSuite by Dussol , a minimalist and modern hotel with views of the beach, the landmark Christ the Redeemer statue, and the Cagarras Islands.

Cape Winelands, South Africa

Rows of Grapevines at Vineyard with mountains in the background and a blue sky.

In addition to hundreds of wineries (including some of the oldest outside of Europe), the Cape Winelands, South Africa , offers expansive estates and historic towns only an hour away from Cape Town . Award-winning Cabernet Sauvignon, Chenin Blanc, and Pinotage are among the varietals at M’hudi Wines , the first entirely Black-owned wine tourism farm in South Africa.

Between Cape Town and the Cape Winelands area, don’t miss Steenberg Farm , the first winery in South Africa to join the International LGBTQ+Travel Association   (IGLTA). Established in 1682, Steenberg Farm has some of the country’s best winery views and Sauvignon Blanc. While touring the wineries, let someone else do the driving with Vine Hopper (Stellenbosch) or the fun Franschhoek Wine Tram .

LGBTQIA+ lowdown:   South Africa amended its constitution in 1996 to ban discrimination based on sexual orientation (the first country to do so) and legalized same-sex marriage in 2006. Still, there are ongoing incidents of racism and homophobia, so visit with caution.

Where to stay:   Maison Chablis Guest House is a quaint and inviting country house, with a pool. Queer-owned Holden Manz Wine Estate is a hidden gem where you can enjoy some Merlot or Syrah, and wine and dine in the Franschhoek Kitchen. Sugarbird Manor at Protea Heights Farm has serene views and an amazing infinity pool amid vineyards.

Nova Scotia, Canada

Nova Scotia is known for its rugged coastline, rolling hills, world-famous lobster, outdoor hiking and cycling, lighthouses, and the world’s highest tides. In 2023, it hosted the North American Indigenous Games , bringing together 756 nations to compete and connect through sports across 21 venues.

LGBTQIA+ lowdown:   Nova Scotia is a queer-welcoming destination with Canada’s largest population of trans and nonbinary people and extensive protections for queer people. It also has a wide array of services, including First Love Yourself, Gender Creative Kids Canada, and Nova Scotia Rainbow Action Project.

Where to stay: The Pebble Bed & Breakfast has charming rooms overlooking Northwest Arm, an inlet with bright blue waters for boating and fishing. The Wellshire Bed and Breakfast in Lunenburg is in the historic Old Town with a well-tended garden and pond. The Halifax Marriott Harbourfront Hotel is eco-certified and has picturesque views of the water, plus an indoor pool and fitness center.

Eureka Springs, Arkansas

A mountain town famous for its mineral springs and Victorian architecture, Eureka Springs, Arkansas , may not be the first place you think of as a queer-friendly destination, but with more than 30 percent of its population identifying as LGBTQIA+, the town is a leader in southern hospitality.

Millions come for the Great Passion Play, the “Christ of the Ozarks” statue, and Thorncrown Chapel , an architectural gem with 425 windows. According to architect E. Fay Jones, it’s a place to “think your best thoughts.” In downtown Eureka Springs, stroll the Historic Loop, a 3.5-mile (5.6 km) walking tour with 300 Victorian-era buildings. Don’t miss the rainbow steps on North Main Street for a Pride photo spot.

LGBTQIA+ lowdown:   Nicknamed the “gay capital of the Ozarks,” Eureka Springs has long advocated for equality. Before the United States legalized same-sex marriage in 2015, Eureka Springs residents formed domestic partnership registries, and the town enacted laws banning discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender expression.

Where to stay:   Gay-owned options include Magnetic Valley Resort, an all-male (including trans men) retreat in a serene setting, and the pet-friendly Wanderoo Lodge , which has a bar, restaurant, and the town’s largest swimming pool.

Barcelona, Spain

Northern Spain’s only coastal city, Barcelona has it all: history, art, Gaudí-designed landmarks , gastronomy, and Instagrammable sites at every turn. Trendy neighborhood, Eixample, known by the locals as Gaixample for its large LGBTQIA+ community, is great for craft beer bars, art galleries, high-end stores, modernist buildings, and the Arc de Triomf, designed as the entrance to the 1888 Barcelona World Fair. You should also visit the Gaudí houses: Casa Batlló (“House of Inspiration”) and La Pedrera Casa Milà, Gaudí’s last private residence project (completed in 1912), for immersive hologram experiences. Mar Bella Beach (with a clothing-optional section) is popular with the LGBTQIA+ community.

LGBTQIA+ lowdown:   Barcelona, the Catalan capital, is particularly welcoming to the spectrum of the queer community, with multiple LGBTQIA+ events, queer-friendly districts, and inclusive hangouts.

Where to stay: Kimpton Vividora in the Gothic Quarter is a pet-friendly favorite with a pool. Hotel Ohla , in the same area, is known for the 1,000 ceramic eyes on its facade and its Michelin-starred restaurant. The hetero-friendly Axel Hotel in Gaixample is also quite popular with the LGBTQIA+ community and houses Sky Bar, which features a fan of feathers representing diversity

A book cover illustration with people and beaches and iconic buildings from around the world, a blue sky, and "Out in the World" printed across the front.

Cologne, Germany

Few places do Christmas markets better than Germany , and the progressive university town of Cologne is no exception. Each market offers a chance to sip warm glühwein, browse handmade arts and crafts, take in ornate decorations, and sample Wiener schnitzel. The biggest and most famous Christkindlmarkt can be found in front Cologne Cathedral, where a giant Christmas tree and pretty overhead string lights set a jolly atmosphere. In the (holiday) spirit of inclusiveness, don’t miss Heavenue , a queer Christmas market featuring sexy St. Nick, live shows, and stalls bursting with color.

LGBTQIA+ lowdown:   Cologne competes with Berlin for the most queer-friendly city in Germany. You’ll find one of Europe’s biggest Pride festivals, two distinct LGBTQIA+ neighborhoods (Rudolfplatz-Schaafenstrasse in the west and Heumarkt-Mathiasstrasse in the east), and lots of queer spaces.

Where to stay: The Excelsior Hotel Ernst am Dom is a five-star luxury option steps from the Cologne Cathedral. Maison Marsil is a family-owned boutique hotel with lots of character in the heart of the city.

Los Cabos, Mexico

On the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula, the Los Cabos region includes the popular towns of Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo, connected by the Corridor: 20 miles (32 km) of walkable beaches, golf courses, resorts, and great spots for snorkeling and fishing.

Visit Cabo San Lucas’s popular Medano Beach, crammed with oceanfront hotels and plenty of places to sip margaritas all day. Just across from the beach, you’ll see the landmark El Arco, a three-story limestone arch where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez. Take a water taxi to Lovers Beach, a beautiful swimmable spot on the Sea of Cortez side of the arch.

LGBTQIA+ lowdown:   Cabo San Lucas is particularly welcoming, hosting an annual LGBTQIA+Pride march. It’s also home to many inclusive resorts and businesses.

Where to stay:   ME Cabo on Medano Beach puts you near all the action; walk to town or sit by the pool with views of the sea and El Arco, then join the parties along the busy beach strip at night. It also holds the Queer Destinations Committed distinction, an internationally recognized standard of inclusivity for the LGBTQIA+ community.

The world’s most LGBTQ+-friendly cities, according to LGBTQ+ travellers

From São Paulo to Stockholm, these are the best cities for queer travellers around the world – according to people who know them best

Grace Beard

Happy Pride Month, one and all! It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and to celebrate, we asked Time Out’s LGBTQ+-identifying writers and editors to tell us all about their favourite city on the planet. The resulting list covers all four corners of the globe, from the beaches of Brazil to the creative hub of Glasgow ’s Southside. These are cities with a vibrant queer community, cities that support and protect  LGBTQ+ citizens and visitors, and  cities that are notable hubs for LGBTQ+ life in their respective countries and regions. So, what are the world’s most LGBTQ+-friendly cities? While we couldn’t possibly name them all, these are some of our favourites.

The world’s most LGBTQ+-friendly cities

1.  new york city, usa.

New York City, USA

Sticking to just one LGBTQ+ scene in New York is like doing drag in the middle of the day: it’s possible but not advisable. I’ve had equally fun nights out hitting up the piano bar circuit of Duplex, Marie’s Crisis and the Monster in the West Village, bopping to top 40 at Hell’s Kitchen bars like Rise and Industry and dancing all night to house and techno at Brooklyn hot spots like Good Room, Elsewhere and 3 Dollar Bill. I’ve also found that it’s a good policy to check out what one-off LGBTQ+ events are happening at Knockdown Center in Queens.

2.  Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

I’ve called Puerto Vallarta in Jalisco, Mexico (the unofficial LGBTQ+ capital of Latin America) home for two years. I arrived on the last day of pride in 2021 and headed straight to the lesbian-owned-and-operated bar, Elixir Mixology . I instantly felt accepted and decided to make Puerto Vallarta my homebase. Same-sex marriage has been legal in Jalisco since 2016, and Puerto Vallarta has been a queer destination since the 1960s when Elizabeth Taylor moved to town and gay travelers began flocking to the area. Emiliano Zapata is the town’s gayborhood where many LGBTQ+ events take place, including Vallarta Pride , BeefDip , and nightly drag shows.

3.  London, England

London, England

London ’s streets are drenched in queer history: they’ve been stalked by Virginia Woolf and Oscar Wilde, hosted secret gay coffee houses, and fought over by generations of activists. But what I love about its LGBTQ+ scene is that it's anything but stuck in the past. While this country was losing its mind over the corrie naish, I was watching drag kings rip into an outdated institution at Dalston alt-cabaret haven The Glory. London's brand new LBGTQ+ Community Centre offers classes in decolonising queerness or comfort activism, while bookshop The Common Press puts intersectionality first. And if you want an old-school night on the tiles? Soho's buzzing, storied gay district is still pretty hard to beat.

4.  Melbourne, Australia

Melbourne, Australia

I’ll never forget the morning of November 15, 2017, when the results of Australia’s same-sex marriage equality came in. We’d won. Nerve-wracking doesn’t come close to describing the painful few months that preceded our victory – but the one thing that held us together? Community. In many ways, the struggle for our rights made Melbourne ’s queer community even stronger. The LGBTQ+ scene reflects the city’s creative, slightly rebellious personality, especially in the arty inner northern neighbourhoods of Fitzroy and Collingwood. Smith Street, has become the northside’s unofficial LGBTQ+ nightlife village, but it’s not just about partying. On any night of the week, you could catch a subversive drag king show at Beers for Queers at the The Fox Hotel, a poetry reading at Hares and Hyenas bookshop, a queer pottery throwdown at Pink Ember Studio, comedy at Pride of our Footscray or visit a neurodiversity-friendly space at Beans Bar. If you visit in May, don’t miss the annual Kylie Birthday Ball at Sircuit Bar , where queer Melbourne’s patron saint is celebrated.

5.  São Paulo, Brazil

São Paulo, Brazil

Even though I don’t speak Portuguese, people in São Paulo have been so welcoming each time I visit! The vibe of the city is exciting, especially for queer visitors. LGBTQ+ activism has shaped the character of the city, where being visible is key to dispelling homophobic attitudes in a country that can still be dangerous for queer people. Queer creativity is thriving; visit LGBTQ+ library in Frei (‘Gay’) Caneca Street, or see a spectacle in Blue Space Drag Club . Try to plan a visit in June for the world’s biggest Pride march, which attracts over 2 million people.

6.  Glasgow, Scotland

Glasgow, Scotland

Glasgow ’s gay scene is not small, but there is a special place tucked south of the river that’s a haven for LGBTQ+ introverts like me, where just by quietly walking around you feel like you belong. The Southside’s independent bookshops and coffee shops open a space for queer creativity to flourish, and helped to shape my bisexuality. I felt heard and seen the very first time I stepped foot in Category is Books , a small, independent and purposefully queer bookshop. I like to soak up the welcoming energy of busy Victoria Road after an oat flat white from Short Long Black Coffee, and head to the Glasgow Zine Library, a space that gave my bisexual poetry a collective platform to exist.

7.  Vienna, Austria

Vienna, Austria

We stumbled onto Vienna ’s queer scene by accident. After a friend’s wedding, my partner and I returned to the Parkhotel Schönbrunn. Built in 1787 as an imperial guesthouse, it’s a stately establishment – so the new rainbow lights caught us off guard. So did the queer glam crowd packing the lobby. We’d found the Rainbow Ball, an LGBTQ black tie waltz that’s the unofficial start of  Vienna’s gay calendar . At 2am, we made the only possible choice: we joined in and danced until sunrise. The only downside? The DJ had terrible taste in music and played English-language Christmas songs (in May)!

8.  Johannesburg, South Africa

Johannesburg, South Africa

Growing up as a queer African with a love for travel was not an easy feat, but Johannesburg became a safe haven for me. It’s where the first African pride march was held in 1990 and since then, the queer movement has continued to grow in South Africa, with the annual October Jo’burg pride now dubbed the Pride of Africa . I usually spend my days exploring the adjoining neighbourhoods of Melville and Illovo, where most of the city’s gay nightlife is. To really get acquainted with Johannesburg’s queer scene, I recommend Babylon Bar and Beefcakes .

9.  Bristol, England

Bristol, England

The city where I shakily set foot in my first ever LGBTQ+ club, Bristol will always hold a special place in my heart. Back then, we used to party at the now-defunct Wonky – an early blueprint for Sink the Pink, according to its Bristolian founder Glyn Fussell – but as the years have passed, this inclusive, experimental spirit has held fast. From the incredibly niche Bristol Bear Bar to the trashy-but-dependable OMG, there’s something for everyone here, and in June beloved London night Big Dyke Energy is set to take over clubbing institution Lakota for a big all-dayer. I also love Modern Queers – the quarterly LGBTQ+ Bristol-based newsletter which cheers up my doormat with its pale pink paper.

10.  Auckland, New Zealand

Auckland, New Zealand

Auckland is truly a jewel in New Zealand’s queer scene. I spend most of my time at the bars of Ponsonby – the whole place practically pulsates with energy. Or sometimes I’ll explore the art-infused thoroughfare of Karangahape Road, or ‘K-road’ as it’s affectionately known. Once Auckland’s red light district, the road is now a hub of gay bars and clubs and fabulous drag shows. (Make sure to catch the talented and unapologetic performers at Caluzzu Cabaret ). In Auckland, it’s easy to lose yourself in the warm embrace of the city. I’ve certainly found a place I can truly call home.

11.  Santiago, Chile

Santiago, Chile

Santiago has been my hometown for years and is where I came out in 2016. I’ve seen and lived through a lot of progress in terms of LGBTQ+ rights. Last year, marriage equality was finally legalised! Chile’s capital is a haven for the country’s queer communities who may not experience the same tolerance in other parts of Chile. As a result, there’s an active LGBTQ+ community and plenty of queer spaces. Check out the bustling lesbian hangout Chueca in the trendy Barrio Italia neighbourhood, or explore entire streets packed full of gay clubs in the leafy downtown Bellavista district.

12.  Berlin, Germany

Berlin, Germany

Berlin ’s Schöneberg is one of the world’s oldest queer districts, and every July – along with the rest of the city –  it largely shuts down, as crowds of over 1 million take to the streets for the city’s Pride parade. As an LGBTQ+ capital, Berlin knows how to go big. But whether it’s drag shows and English-language pub quizzes at the Tipsy Bear in Prenzlauer Berg, leather-clad men at Schöneberg’s Prinzknecht , or trans and non-binary night in Kreuzberg’s Möbel Olfe , the city knows how to welcome you among friends. No matter who you are, Berlin loves you back.

13.  Buenos Aires, Argentina

Buenos Aires, Argentina

Buenos Aires is preceded by its reputation as a gay hotspot. After all, it’s the capital of Argentina: a country which introduced same-sex marriage in 2010 and has legally recognised gender self-identification since 2012. The city’s hate crime laws offer protection against discrimination based on gender identity and sexuality, leading to a visible queer contingent on the city's streets. I went to Buenos Aires to ease the sting of heartbreak and, once there, found myself among welcoming friends of friends who were relatively new to the city but knew all of the best queer haunts. Together, we visited LGBTQIA+ cultural centre Batacazo Cultural , a trans-feminist, self-run space that runs queer milongas (tango parties) every week, and danced to reggaeton and Anitta at Glam Disco in Recoleta. During the days, I visited MALBA to see Las Dos Frida by Las Yeguas del Apocalipsis , and was hugely moved to see such a vivid record of the artistic duo.

https://media.timeout.com/images/106011443/image.jpg

14.  Montreal, Canada

Montreal, Canada

Montreal is renowned for being an exceptionally LGBTQ+-friendly city. It offers a welcoming environment with inclusive legal protections, a diverse and accepting community, and vibrant LGBTQ+ neighborhoods like the Gay Village. The city also hosts one of the largest Pride festivals, LGBTQ+ organizations providing resources and support, a cultural scene that highlights queer artists and events, specialised healthcare services to enhance to community’s well-being… I could go on. Though challenges may persist, Montreal is a fantastic place to be LGBTQ+.

15.  Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona, Spain

A pioneer in the fight for LGBTIQ+ rights (it was the first Spanish city to hold a demonstration in 1977), Barcelona is today one of the world’s capitals of tolerance. The ‘Gaixample’ – the Eixample Esquerre enclave where most of the city’s queer-friendly venues are concentrated – continues to fly the flag for the LGBTQ+ community in the city, led by the incombustible Candy Darling : a bar open every day that hosts exciting events. In Poble-sec, La Federica and La Raposa are institutions, while La Casa de la Pradera celebrates its 12th anniversary in the Raval this year. The city’s effervescent drag scene can be witnessed on the Ravalada Drag Tour , and the Maricxs party offers the perfect mix between techno music and queer culture.

16.  San Francisco, USA

San Francisco, USA

Growing up, I lived half an hour away from San Francisco , and the city quickly stole my heart. Since the late 1960s, the Castro neighbourhood has been a colorful beacon of hope for queer travellers. Follow along the rainbow-paved road to discover LGBTQ+-owned vendors, speakeasies, pubs, restaurants, and bars. On a weekend night, the places to be are Lookout , the Cafe , Toad Hall , or Beaux . Most of these spots host drag nights and Sunday morning brunches that may get a little out of hand – in the best way possible!

17.  Adelaide, Australia

Adelaide, Australia

I was born and raised in Adelaide , a city that has come, cartwheeling, out of the closet. It’s shaking off its conservative roots and ‘city of churches’ label and becoming a place that’s fluid, fun and flamboyant. While overlooked for its size, the LGBTQ+ community owes a lot to the city – with South Australia being the first state to decriminalise homosexuality in 1975. And the LGBTQ+ spirit is felt even more because of Adelaide’s small size. Within its convenient square-mile, CBD heart, there are drag parties, lesbian bars, the Rainbow Walk, and the annual queer Feast Festival. Mary’s Poppin and My Lover Cindi are LGBTQ+ venues that celebrate queer life, along with the city’s arts and cultural festival circuit.

https://media.timeout.com/images/106011861/image.jpg

18.  Athens, Greece

Athens, Greece

Queer parties in Athens may be the most comfortable parties I know. Filled with and organized by political activists, parties like Draga Drouga and QReclaim (held in the recently closed Communitism ) have a unique history: they are heavily defined by anger over the transphobic killing of activist and drag queen Zackie Oh in 2018. The LGBTQI+ scene in Athens is still constantly developing but it’s incredibly vibrant and artistic. Squats and universities routinely host art shows, drag performances or vogueing competitions, while clubs like BeQueer offer a welcome escape.

19.  Leeds, England

Leeds, England

Not only did I grow up in Leeds , but it’s also the city I found myself and my identity in. From Leeds Pride  to open mic nights, LGBTQ+ bars, venues, and clubs; the city is brimming with a vibrant LGBTQ+ community. Feeling like drinks and a cabaret? Check out Viaduct Showbar , for performances by drag artists, tribute acts, or just a good old dance. If you’d prefer to sit down and eat, also located in Freedom Quarter — known as the heart of the Leeds LGBTQ+ scene  —  is Fibre , a bar that hosts a Bottomless Drag Brunch every Saturday afternoon. For something a little more lowkey, try one of many spoken word and open-mic nights; I recommend That’s What We Said , which is open to speakers of marginalized genders this July at Hyde Park Book Club.

https://media.timeout.com/images/106011397/image.jpg

20.  Stockholm, Sweden

Stockholm, Sweden

From Moxy’s queer women-only party to Pride Park where I danced at a silent disco, I’ll never forget Stockholm Pride. I witnessed bondage demonstrations, and swooned while Kool and the Gang sang ‘Celebration’. Sweden has a proven track record of supporting the LGBTQ+ community: in 1972 it was the first country to allow gender changes and same-sex couples have been able to marry since 2009. I felt very welcome as a pansexual woman in the ‘open city’ while sipping champagne at the gay-owned Mälarpaviljongen bar and performing ‘Mama Mia’ with holograms of the iconic bandmembers at the ABBA Museum.

21.  Hyderabad, India

Hyderabad, India

This south Indian city offers plenty of safe spaces to be queer. The  People’s Choice Cafe is queer-owned and welcomes everyone, while  LGTBQIA+ movie nights , queer fests, Pride parades, and  DragVanti – a space to discover India’s drag culture – make up a fun and welcoming environment for LGBTQ+ travellers. Hyderabad hosted India’s first-ever drag convention and is the proud home of India’s very first queer magazine, where the LGBTQ+ community can express themselves and celebrate their identities. The city even has a queer support and legal aid center . Despite instances of homophobia and transphobia, Hyderabad’s diverse culture offers the queer community a home away from home.

https://media.timeout.com/images/106011402/image.jpg

22.  Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Sun-drenched beaches, samba rhythms, and a queer scene that sizzles like a caipirinha on a summer’s day: Rio de Janeiro is pure magic. From the legendary Copacabana to the pulsating beats of Ipanema, Rio embraces LGBTQ+ travelers and locals with open arms. The Gamboa neighborhood is my favourite: I love the dazzling drag shows at Rio Scenarium . You’ll also find great nights out at Bar Bukowski and the LGBTQ+ parties at Seven Cruising Bar and Pink Flamingo. Rio dances to its own rhythm, and it’s an irresistible paradise for LGBTQ+ souls who seek a little extra sparkle in their lives.

The best LGBTQ+ friendly travel destinations…

1. san francisco, california, usa.

The first place on our list of best LGBTQ+ friendly destinations is San Francisco. San Francisco might be one of the best known queer-friendly cities, sometimes called the the  “ Gay Mecca ” of the world. Indeed, every queer should visit the city at least once. The enourmous gay clubs and rainbow crosswalks on Castro Street are packed any night of the week with drag queens and party goers, and the city boasts some of the world’d largest Pride and Leather events. In addition, there are many gay bars and organizations throughout the city, with a large and politically active queer community.

If you are not into clubs, there is plenty of sightseeing to do, as well as many excellent restaurants and museums. Attractions include the massive Golden Gate Park, the bustling Ferry Building, and the seaside shops on Pier 39 or Fisherman’s Wharf. You can also find uniquely quirky accommodations and shopping, as well as food options to fit every budget. While the city is home to many queer artists and activists, there is a growing population in the surrounding cities, particularly across the bay in Oakland. Among other attractions, here you can find the historic White Horse Inn, one of the oldest gay bars in the United States.

2. Guadalajara, Mexico

While Puerto Vallarta is known as one of the gay capitals of Mexico and features on many lists of best LGBTQ+ destinations, the community tends to be focused on retired gay men. Just a few hours inland, Guadalajara–known as the “ San Francisco of Mexico ”–boasts a larger, younger, and hipper LGBTQ+ community. As the second largest city in Mexico, you can find travelers and expats from all over the world, including the largest population of Canadians outside of Canada. There is a cluster of gay bars, drag shows, and clubs in the Gay Village near the historic Zona Centro that are reminiscent of San Francisco’s Castro District, which a chance to get a post-dancing snack at the rainbow-draped Tacos Gay afterwards. However, there are gay bars and thriving nighlife neighborhoods all over the city, such as the one around Avenida Chapultetec.

Often overlooked as a tourist destination, Guadalajara is significantly more affordable than the more popular and coastal locations in Mexico. As the second-largest city in the county, it has modern accommodations while still maintaining a more “authentic” Mexican culture. The beautiful and historic city has many sights to explore, with incredible architecture and fountains. Visit the stunning cathedrals with their stained glass windows, such as the Catedral in Zona Centro and the Expiatorio. There are numerous museums, bars, and restaurants with incredible and affordable cuisine, as well as ample shopping opportunities. You can also take day excursions to the neighboring areas, such as Tequila or Lake Chapala.

3. Portland, Oregon, USA

While Portland is probably best known for rain, bridges, stripclubs, and food cart pods, there is a thriving LGBTQ+ community in the city. It’s not difficult to find queer bars, drag shows, sports leagues, community organizations, art, and queer-owned businesses. The city has a long history of gay rights activism, and was one of the first major cities to repeal anti-gay legislation and elect an openly gay mayor. Their annual Pride parade is a part of a two-day festival, and there are numerous queer-focused events all year long. On sunny days, you can also find many gay folks hanging out in the clothing-optional sections of Collins Beach. It’s definitely one of the best places to visit for LGBTQ+ travellers!

Portland is also known for its excellent food and craft breweries, and there are numerous opportunities to explore. The numerous food cart pods offer clusters of delicious food and beverage options at reasonable prices. There also are stunning parks, gardens, and scenic areas, such as the Crystal Springs Rhododendron Gardens and Washington Park. The moderate temperatures and ample rain makes for some truly lush greenery. You can also find some incredible art and science museums to check out, or simply walk or bike around the city to enjoy the views. It is an affordable option whether you are looking for nightlife, nature, or cultural attractions.

4. Berlin, Germany

Berlin has long been a refuge for LGBTQ+ individuals, dating all the way back to the 1920s. Today, it’s one of the most LGBTQ+ friendly destinations in Europe: there are Pride Week events, gay bars, clubs, and parties, queer cinema, a gay museum , and more. The largest event of the year is Christopher Street Day ( CSD Berlin ), where up to 750,000 people march, celebrate, and demonstrate on the streets. While many of the queer-oriented venues can be found in the gay neighborhoods such as the Rainbow District, you are sure to find events throughout the city. There are also numerous businesses that are queer-owened or advertise themselves as LGBT friendly.

In addition to the nightlife, the city has a rich history which makes for great sightseeing. Walk around under the fragrant linden trees enjoying the incredible architecture, visit museums, the Bradenburg Gate, or what remains of the Berlin Wall. At the Chekpoint Charlie Museum, you can see the old guardhouse and Cold War relics at what was the most famous crossing between East and West Berlin. On the eastern side of the city, you can still find the famous and adorable hat-wearing Ampelmännchen (“little traffic light men”)  on the pedestrian crossing lights. There are also endless opportunities to enjoy traditional German cuisine, beer, wines, and spirits, and the excellent public transportation makes it easy to get around.

5. Kona, Hawaii, USA

Kona lies on the western side of the island of Hawai’i, commonly referred to the “Big Island” to avoid confusion with the state of Hawaii. It is the location of the island’s main airport, and you can find plenty of queer events and nightlife without leaving the city. There is a Pride festival, gay bars and organizations, and a number of of queer-friendly businesses in this tropical locale, making it one of the best gay friendly destinations. For a relaxed vacation, enjoy some drinks on the beach, hike under the mango trees, or explore the city’s many shops and restaurants.

However, the “Big” Island is not that big, and there are abundant sightseeing opportunities on the whole island. You can see the live volcano Kilauea at Volcanoes National Park, one of the island’s many stunning waterfalls , or the moon up close at the Mauna Kea Summit Observatory. On the east side of the island, Hilo offers many sites and attractions as well, including the not-to-be missed Hawaii Tropical Bioreserve & Garden . The western side of the island is drier, but is better known for its snorkeling and scuba diving opportunities. You will need a car to get around, and can easily drive across the island in a day, with plenty of opportunities to stop and take photos of stunning roadside views or exploring lava tubes. While there, don’t miss the chance to attend a traditional luau with Hawaiian food, hula dance, and fire performances.

6. Denver, Colorado, USA

Denver is a lesser-known LGBTQ hot spot that is growing in popularity as a queer travel destination which attracts people all over the world. In fact, it’s River North (RiNo) neighborhood was named of one the country’s top five emerging gay neighborhoods . Some of the more popular annual events include the Pride Festival, a Queer Film Festival, and the Gay Rodeo. In addtion, the city abounds with queer-centered nightlife and events, inlcluding gay bars, dance clubs, and drag shows. The city is also well known for it’s excellent craft beer–but be aware that alcohol might hit you differently at the elevation of the “Mile High City!”

Denver is known as a friendly, affordable, easily walkable, and cultural city. There is an an abundance of amazing food, parks, tourist attractions, and festivals. However, Colorado is a beautiful state if you’re looking to explore beyond the Denver-Boulder Metro area. Depending on the type of vacation you are looking for, you can find national parks for hiking and camping, museums, concerts, and more. For the more adventurous, a scenic drive through the Rocky Mountains offers incredible sightseeing opportunities, as long as you are mindful of the weather and road conditions in the colder months. You can even see part of the Grand Canyon, if you’re up for a longer road trip.

7. Playa del Carmen, Mexico

Playa Del Carmen in the Mexican Riviera Maya is another up-and-coming LGBTQ+ hot spot . Formerly a small beach town, the small city has exploded with resorts and nightlife, to become one of the most popular places to visit in Mexico . While the city currently only has two official gay bars–both of which cater primarily to gay men–there are many drag shows, lesbian brunches, and gay-centered events to be found. Since many of the events are more “underground,” the best way to find them is to connect with other LGBTQ+ folks in the area via queer Facebook and WhatsApp groups. The city’s annual Pride Parade is a small one, but is reminiscent of the event’s original roots, where everyone is welcome to join the march for gay rights. In additon to the parade, there are numerous events during the entire Pride Week in June.

The primary tourist season for the area is Thanksgiving through New Years, but you can find travellers from all over the world at any time of the year. There are accommodation opportunities for every budget, from all-inclusive resorts to backpacker hostels. The city is packed with bars, restaurants, night clubs, beach clubs, and shopping on the main tourist strip, Avenida Quinta. There are also tons of outdoor activities, such as stand-up paddle boarding, snorkeling, and kite boarding. The city is easily accessible for pedestrians and bicyclists, and visitors can take advantage of the inexpensive BiciPlaya rental bike stations. Enjoy a meal with your feet in the white sands while gazing at the turquoise Caribbean waters, or take excursions to visit cenotes , ruins, or the other quirky coastal cities, such as Akumal or Tulum.

8. Montevideo, Uruguay

Uruguay is the smallest country in South America , but is is also the most progressive. Nestled between the more well-known tourist destinations of Brazil and Argentina, it has some of the the oldest and strongest legal protections for LGBTQ+ individuals on the continent. The city is known for being culturally diverse and egalitarian, with many gay-focused events, organizations, and venues, as well as queer-owened businesses. Diversity month is celebrated every September, which ends with a March for Diversity.

Not only is Montevideo one of the most LGBTQ+ friendly destinations, but it’s a great place to explore. The vibe of the cosmopolitan city is vibrant and laid-back, with some truly beautiful beaches. As the capitol city, it is an excellent base to explore the rest of the small county with day trips. While it is less “touristy” than other Latin American countries, it is one of the safest, and offers many excursions and activities. Whether you are looking for nightlife, historical attractions, or time in nature, you are sure to find activities you enjoy. Options include hot springs, horseback riding, museums, wildlife watching, and more.

9. Bangkok, Thailand

Thailand is known for being one of the most LGBTQ+ friendly countries in Asia, and is especially welcoming to transgender people. In fact, it has one of the largest transgender communites in the world, as many from Southeast Asia and elsewhere flock there to escape discrimination and for gender reassignment surgery. In Bangkok, trans men and women are a part of the mainstream, and are commonly seen working in shops, restaurants, hotels and elsewhere. It is also the home of the annual Miss International Queen, the largest transgender beauty competition in the world. The gay scene in Bangkok offers something for everyone, whether you are looking for wild nightlife or luxury spas. You can find X-Rated night shows on the Soi Twilight strip, but there is also gay cabarets, drag shows, merman shows, speakeasies, karaoke, saunas and more. There is also ample opportunity for shopping, cuisine, and sightseeing. Be sure not to miss some of the historic cultural attractions, such as the Grand Palace and Emerald Buddha Temple.

The best way to find interesting things to do in Bangkok is by exploring the chaotic city rather than by looking for attractions online. It is also easily accessible to beach resort towns such as Pattaya or Phucket. In addition, you could take day trips to some of the famous markets and Buddhist temples. Public transportation makes it easy to get around, and inexpensive rideshare apps can get to you places the buses don’t reach. All in all it is an affordable travel destination with excellent food and a seemingly endless number of activities.

10. Tel Aviv, Israel

While the Middle East is generally not known for being especially safe for LGBTQ+ travelers, Tel Aviv is the exception. It’s known for being a hotspot for gay tourists, with a thriving community, nightlife, world-class cuisine and beautiful beaches on the Mediterranean Sea. While some of the surrounding cities are more conservative, Tel Aviv has become known as the “gay capital of the Middle East,” with the largest Pride Parade in the region. The gay nighlife revolves around massive parties rather than particular bars, and the beach in front of the Hilton is known as the city’s unofficial gay beach.

It is estimated that a quarter of the Tel Aviv’s population identifies as LGBTQ+, and they are able to enjoy legal protections and public displays of affection without fear. While city is known for being more open-minded and accepting than some of its neighbors, gay travelers shouldn’t be discouraged from visiting other parts of the country. You can easily take daylong excursions to see the historical sites in Petra, or to float in the Dead Sea. There are also culinary, art and boat tours, as well as markets, natural wonders, and wildlife.

12. Auckland, New Zealand

New Zealand is not only absolutely beautiful, but one of the most LGBTQ+ friendly countries in the world. Auckland is often overlooked as a travel destination (I mean, it’s pretty hard to compete with the stunning natural beauty in other parts of New Zealand), but it’s a cosmopolitan city in a very liberal country and a great place to visit for LGBTQ+ travellers. It hosts a small but vibrant gay nightlife, as well as plenty of things to do in the city. And hey, it’s a great base for exploring the beaches, volcanoes and other nature that surround this beautiful city!

With mountains on its doorstep, Vancouver Island next door, and many things to do in the city… who wouldn’t want to go to Vancouver? And what’s more, like many cities in Canada, is a great destination for LGBTQ+ travellers. As well as exploring the city’s “gayborhood” of Davie Street, there’s also The Drive, a bohemian area popular with the lesbian community. In Vancouver you can find a rainbow pedestrian crossing at Davie/Bute Street, enjoy a LGBTQ history walking tour , celebrate Whistler Pride (one of the biggest LGBTQ+ ski events), as well as Vancouver Pride, the biggest gay pride festival in Western Canada.

best lgbt friendly travel destinations

It’s an unfortunate fact that there are many places in the world that are not the safest for LGBTQ+ travelers, and visiting a gay-friendly destination is not a guarantee of a vacation that is free from discrimination or harassment. If you are unsure of a destination that you wish to visit, it is wise to do some research before planning your trip, to ensure that you are more likely to enjoy a worry-free vacation. Finding gay-friendly travel destinatons provides unique opportunities to not only create happy memories, but to make new queer friends from all over the world.

The best LGBT-friendly holiday destinations around the world, from honeymoons to partying

I very clearly remember my first holiday with a boyfriend. It was to Cannes, in France , nearly 25 years ago, and the hotel receptionist looked aghast. “Mais monsieur!” she cried when we tried to check in. “Il y a un grand lit!”

Though we laughed it off (and still use “monsieur!” as a comical catchphrase), not everyone would have found it funny to be told, rather loudly, that the room had just one bed.

Although such incidents are rare today in most of Europe , LGBT+ travellers are still not always as warmly welcomed as our binary counterparts.

As Pride month kicks off a party-packed season, it’s worth remembering that “out and proud” elements aren’t holiday prerequisites. LGBT+ people like sunshine, skiing, culture and the great outdoors just as much as straight people. What matters is the ability to holiday in safe and inclusive environments where anyone can be themselves without having an uncomfortable “monsieur!” moment. After all, isn’t LGBT+ travel just “ travel “?

These are the destinations where you’ll feel most comfortable.

UK and Europe

Best for: party people.

Denmark is one of the top LGBT-friendly destinations in Europe

There’s no need to travel far when there’s so much LGBT+ appeal close to home. Brighton and Manchester host the UK ’s most credible Pride celebrations (both in August). Along with Hebden Bridge in West Yorkshire, Brighton also has one of the UK’s densest LGBT+ populations.

On the continent, Denmark has a long history of acceptance (its first gay bar opened in 1955). Estonia came in from the cold more recently by legalising same-sex marriage (its second city, Tartu , is also one of this year’s European Capitals of Culture). But perhaps the most fun destination for LGBT+ travellers is Spain . Madrid Pride is Europe ’s biggest (over two million people attend); Barcelona and Sitges are summertime favourites; and Gran Canaria loves Pride so much that it hosts two per year, in May and November.

Travel Supermarket has a six-night stay over Winter Pride in Gran Canaria at a well-located, three-star all-inclusive from £980pp, including flights and transfers.

Best for: colourful LGBT+ communities

Provincetown celebrates different LGBT+ communities all summer

If you’re celebrating Pride this summer, spare a thought for Marsha P Johnson, the New York drag queen who helped kickstart 1969’s Stonewall uprising from which every Pride event descends (discover more this month, when the Stonewall National Monument Visitor Centre opens).

NYC’s LGBT+ community remains as vibrant as ever, but the rainbow flag flies proudly in pockets all over America. Palm Springs , Key West, Fort Lauderdale and Miami have thriving communities, but perhaps the most joyful to visit is Provincetown, at the tip of Cape Cod. All summer long, each week celebrates a different LGBT+ subculture, from bears and party boys to women of colour.

Bon Voyage  can package flights, two nights in Boston (room only), five nights in Provincetown (B&B) and ferry transfers from £2,399pp in September.

Best for: southern hemisphere sparkle

There’s a party atmosphere during Sydney Mardi Gras

South Australia may have been the first state Down Under to decriminalise homosexuality, but New South Wales has stolen the show ever since. Though the first LGBT+ march was met with heavy-handed policing in 1978, it paved the way for progress. Nowadays its offspring, Mardi Gras, is one of Australia’s biggest festivals, drawing tens of thousands of revellers to Sydney  each February (the loudest cheers in the parade are saved for the “78ers”, those original disruptors). Elsewhere, with 2024 being the 30th anniversary of The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, the spotlight is falling on the cult movie’s Outback locations.

Follow in the pink bus’s wake from Sydney to Alice Springs and beyond on Travel Nation ‘s 14-night, self-guided tour. Flights, transfers, accommodation, some meals and a small-group ‘Red Centre’ experience cost from £3,305pp.

Best for: chilled-out holidays and honeymoons

The sand of Patong Beach in Phuket awaits

As well as taking steps this year towards legalising same-sex marriage, the self-styled “land of smiles” has lots to offer LGBT+ travellers – recent anti-discrimination laws for transgender people further demonstrate an openness.

“ Bangkok has a large and lively gay scene, especially along Silom Road, where you’ll find everything from karaoke to dance parties and drag shows," says Global Travel Collection’s Duncan Greenfield-Turk. “Chiang Mai also has a small but more laid-back LGBT+ community, while Phuket has bars, clubs and famous Patong Beach.”

Combine Bangkok and the beach with Inspiring Travel ; flights, transfers, a three-night city break and seven nights in Phuket costs from £1,729pp, including breakfast (book by 31 July).

Best for: LGBT+ trailblazers

Explore this part of North Africa with a specialist tour operator

Though Morocco is one of the 60-odd countries still criminalising homosexuality, it nevertheless stands out as the Arab world’s most liberal nation. Discriminatory laws are rarely enforced on foreign travellers; but is it right to holiday somewhere that locals can’t similarly be themselves?

Bilal El-Hammoumy of diversity-championing Inclusive Morocco thinks so. “Visibility fosters change,” he says. “By openly advocating for LGBT+ inclusivity and supporting employment opportunities for LGBT+ locals, we challenge societal norms to promote acceptance and understanding.”

While acknowledging the legal context, Inclusive Morocco works with LGBT-friendly accommodation and guides, allowing holidaymakers to explore more liberal parts of the country without fear of harassment.

A 13-day Echoes of the Atlas itinerary, teaming Marrakech with oases and deserts, costs from £3,170pp, including accommodation, transfers and all meals; flights extra.

Top 10 LGBTQ-friendly destinations for 2022

Carnival in the famous streets of Olinda

LGBTQ-friendly destinations returned this year bolder and brighter than ever with Pride events and celebrations. As a new era of visibility and advocacy leads to greater protection and legal rights for the LGBTQI+ community, there are more and more exciting destinations around the world where you can be your true, authentic self.

For years, TPG has partnered with the nonprofit Rainbow Railroad to support and rescue LGBTQIA+ individuals. This year, we doubled down on those efforts.

As sponsors of Rainbow Railroad's Global Freedom Series — a trio of events that celebrate and raise funds for Rainbow Railroad's mission in cities around the globe — we're showcasing some of the best LGBTQ-friendly destinations. And at the event in New York City, we'll be serving themed cocktails inspired by three of our top picks. But you don't have to be in New York to experience the flavors of Taiwan, New Zealand and Malta.

Read on for our top destinations — including a few inspired sips for the first three to transport you there.

Kaohsiung, Taiwan

best lgbt friendly travel destinations

Kaohsiung's lively youth scene has helped shape this less-touristy second city of Taiwan into an LGBTQI+ destination. The emergence of the city's queer culture will be recognized when it hosts WorldPride 2025.

You don't need to wait until 2025 to check out the city's LGBTQI+ scene, though. Taiwan's LGBTQ rights are considered the most progressive in Asia, with same-sex activity and marriage legal as of May 2019. The gay scene in Kaohsiung is less flashy and a bit discreet, so you'll have to know where you're going and anticipate being greeted by an intercom buzz to get into gay bars and clubs. Top spots to check out include Private Life Gay Bar and Barcode Kaohsiung.

The cocktail: Try a Taiwanese Tea cocktail with Earl Grey tea, vodka, grapefruit juice, lemon juice and honey.

Auckland, New Zealand

best lgbt friendly travel destinations

One of the most closed-off countries throughout the pandemic, New Zealand is just starting to reopen to tourism, making now a great time to plan a trip. LGBTQI+ visitors find a safe haven in the progressive ways of New Zealand, especially in the cosmopolitan streets of Auckland.

Start with a tour of downtown Auckland's Karangahape Road (known as "K Road" to Kiwis), where clubs like G.A.Y. and Family Bar and Club welcome all with the warm, inviting spirit New Zealanders are known for. Depending on the night, head to either Phoenix Cabaret or Caluzzi Cabaret (both on K Road) for some of the country's most elite and bawdy drag. As for your daytime fun, Auckland is near several excellent beaches, islands and rainforests worth exploring.

The cocktail: Sip a Spiked Apple Cider with apple cider and bourbon.

Malta's 300-plus days of sunshine offer a bright welcome to all LGBTQI+ visitors. The country continues to top the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association's Europe Rainbow index as the most progressive in Europe when it comes to LGBTQI+ rights. Malta banned conversion therapy in 2016 (the first country in Europe to do so) and has passed LGBTQ rights equality at a constitutional level.

The compact island has only a few gay bars and clubs, as some of its legacy LGBTQI+ spots shuttered during the pandemic. Still, you'll find a hopping scene at Michelangelo Club, where dance parties pick up late. Additionally, there's The Thirsty Barber, a prime spot for a more refined cocktail scene. The best time to visit is during Malta's all-encompassing Pride celebration in September.

The cocktail: For the flavor of Malta, get The Bajtra with pear juice, honey, gin and soda water.

Sydney, Australia

best lgbt friendly travel destinations

Sydney is arguably the LGBTQI+ capital of the South Pacific. The progressive city is welcoming to LGBTQI+ visitors year-round, though the best time to visit is during Sydney's three-weekend Mardi Gras celebration in February and March. The city will also host WorldPride 2023 from Feb. 17 to March 5 next year, so plan your trip now, as it will be the hub of epic fun.

If you're looking to stay in the heart of it all, Darlinghurst is the place to be. Stroll Oxford Street for some of Sydney's best LGBTQI+ bars, clubs, bookstores and restaurants. And don't pass up the chance to be in the audience at The Imperial Erskineville's Drag N Dine show — high-quality camp in a classic cabaret setting.

While Serbia doesn't top the list of the most progressive countries advancing LGBTQI+ rights, Belgrade's an enclave for the LGBTQI+ community, even though discretion is advised. Despite a history of Pride parade bans, Belgrade's recent consecutive string of successful Pride events has proved the city a worthy host of EuroPride 2022, which took place in September.

Start your visit at the Pride Info Centre in the heart of the city for information on local events and insider recs. You'll find a few gay bars and clubs in and around Belgrade's Terazije Square: Musk Machine is the go-to spot for dance parties, while XL Bar is a reliable option for cocktails and drag.

Providence, Rhode Island

best lgbt friendly travel destinations

Providence is a small, culturally rich city. Its LGBTQI+ community is anchored by nearby Brown University, Johnson & Wales University and Providence College.

You don't have to go far to find a cluster of gay watering holes that dot the city's downtown area. Mainstay bars like Mirabar and The Stable are great examples of what you can expect in this friendly city. Stop by The Dark Lady and EGO for rotating drag events and dance parties. Try to time your visit for mid-June when Providence hosts Rhode Island Pride.

Saugatuck, Michigan

best lgbt friendly travel destinations

Offering a Provincetown, Massachusetts-meets-Fire Island, New York vibe in the Midwest, Saugatuck is an LGBTQI+ summer escape on the freshwater beaches of Lake Michigan. This summer resort town in Michigan is a three-hour drive from Chicago and Detroit, with queer roots that date back to 1910 when the still-in-operation Ox-Bow School of Art and Artists' Residency began hosting artist retreats.

Expect a low-key scene here, as Saugatuck has only one gay bar: Dunes Resort. Luckily, The Dunes has a happening pool scene along with weekend dance parties, drag bingo and karaoke. For something a bit more toned down, grab a coffee at gay-owned Uncommon Coffee Roasters, a town watering hole since 1994.

Thessaloniki, Greece

best lgbt friendly travel destinations

A charming Greek port city just off the Aegean Sea, Thessaloniki's relaxed culture and hip nightlife have fostered an emerging LGBTQI+ scene. The good word's gotten out, and Thessaloniki has been tapped to host EuroPride 2024.

Take a stroll along Pavlou Mela Street, where you'll find bars, restaurants, cafes and shops that are easygoing and cater to an LGBTQI+ crowd, especially the area's active lesbian community. Tap into the energy of the city by starting with visits to Enola and Anothen Cafe Bar.

Toronto, Canada

best lgbt friendly travel destinations

Canada has long been a leader in LGBTQ rights, from adding protection for sexual orientation to its constitution in 1995 to becoming the first country in the Americas to pass same-sex marriage in 2005. So it's no surprise that Toronto, the country's largest city, is a hub of LGBTQI+ culture. The city's Church-Wellesley Village (known locally as "The Village") is the go-to spot, with a variety of shops, restaurants, bars and a queer community center.

The best time to visit The Village is during its lively Pride Month festival that runs all of June. The month's celebrations culminate with a Pride parade where you're more than likely to catch a glimpse of the country's prime minister, Justin Trudeau, waving a Pride flag.

Quito, Ecuador

best lgbt friendly travel destinations

Ecuador 's gay rights have advanced considerably in recent years. The country legalized same-sex marriage in 2019, but its history dates back to 1998 when it banned discrimination based on sexual orientation at the constitutional level. Quito's the place to be for the LGBTQI+ community, as party buses fill the streets nightly and gay nightclubs keep the party going late into weekend nights.

If you plan to dance the night away, know that you'll need some time to adjust to the high altitude. Quito is set amid the Andes at an elevation of 9,350 feet — that's almost twice the altitude of Denver , which sits 5,279 feet above sea level. Most of the queer-centric action happens in Quito's Mariscal district, an area lovingly known by locals as the "Pink Zone." Touch Uio has a hopping Friday and Saturday night dance floor, while Pravda is a fun karaoke bar where you can mix and mingle with Ecuadorians.

When planning a vacation, travelers read, research, and process lots of information before making a final decision on a destination. Gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender travelers have to consider an additional layer: acceptance. In a world where it’s still illegal in many countries to be gay, LGBTQI persons consider safety factors at a whole different level than their straight counterparts.

With that in mind, we’ve rounded up the best LGBTQI destinations for travelers to consider, and what sets them apart.

Best LGBTQI-Friendly Destinations

Factors for inclusion on this list include consideration for places that have an active gay community, destination marketing organizations that work to appeal to LGBTQI travelers, and, finally, countries that have passed marriage equality laws. While someone might not be traveling for a destination wedding, having a law on the books that recognizes a foundational human right of marriage is a telling sign that gay travelers are more likely to find acceptance.

West Hollywood, Los Angeles, California

Southern California’s gay culture has an HQ in queer-friendly West Hollywood, a neighborhood known for posh boutiques, high-energy clubs, and its world famous gay bar and restaurant, The Abbey. LA Pride is anchored here, and WeHo makes a great spot for travelers to brunch while keeping one eye open for celebrity sightings.

Dublin, Ireland

best lgbt friendly travel destinations

Dublin is the gay heart of Ireland. The Irish celebrated the recognition of marriage equality in late 2015, due to a concerted effort of LGBTQI folks and their allies, especially Rory O’Neill, who fiercely rallied supporters as her drag alter ego, Panti Bliss. True to Irish tradition, the stage holds a place of importance, so consider visiting during May when the annual International Dublin Gay Theatre Festival takes place.

Amsterdam, Netherlands

amsterdam netherlands canal parade gay pride

The Netherlands was the first country in the world to pass a marriage equality law, in 2000, and the Dutch have a long record of tolerance to the disenfranchised. More than half a million people turn out for one of Europe’s largest pride events, where the parade takes place on the Prinsengracht (one Amsterdam’s main canals) in late July and early August.

Barcelona, Spain

barcelona spain pride festival

Spain’s vibrant Catalonia region spearheaded the movement for greater LGBTQI rights as early as 1978, when homosexuality between consenting adults was made legal. Barcelona’s Gaixample (a neologism combining “gay” and “E’ixample”) neighborhood is the place to be. The city is also close (about 22 miles) to the oceanside town of Sitges, where gay travelers can enjoy a beachy Mediterranean getaway.

Cape Town, South Africa

cape town south africa gay pride parade

As the most openly gay city on the entire African continent, Cape Town provides a safe enclave in a region that isn’t exactly known for gay tolerance. South Africa’s constitution, adopted in 1996, afforded civil rights protections to LGBTQI citizens. Marriage equality came a decade later, making South Africa only the fifth country at the time to recognize same-sex unions. For those reasons alone, Cape Town has remained one of the top LGBTQI destinations in the world.

Montreal, Canada

best lgbt friendly travel destinations

Canada’s second-largest city is home to a famed Gay Village. How’s that for being LGBTQI-friendly? Spend time along the main drag, Rue Sainte-Catherine, chockablock with antique shops, boutiques, cafes, and gay bars. Montreal’s Pride gained international attention in 2017 when gay-ally Prime Minister Justin Trudeau joined the parade alongside openly-gay Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkhar.

Montevideo, Uruguay

Montevideo uruguay diversity market

In largely Catholic South America, Uruguay stands out as the most secular of nations: Only 60 percent of citizens consider themselves religious. It might not be a surprise, then, that capital city Montevideo is also a popular gay travel spot—homosexuality was decriminalized in 1934 , allowing acceptance to flourish for decades. In addition to a spate of LGBTQI bars, restaurants, and hotels, travelers might want to consider taking queer tango lessons while in the country.

New Orleans, Louisiana

new orleans louisiana rainbow flags

It’s no surprise that NOLA makes this list, as it’s home to a series of gay and gay-adjacent celebrations throughout the year. The city holds a unique place in American history as a melting pot of freed slaves, French, Caribbean, and Spanish people—it’s less a Southern city than a place wholly its own, accepting of all. Everyone knows Mardi Gras is rife with gay sensibilities, but for a more cerebral time, consider exploring the Saints and Sinners, a gay literary festival that takes place each May.

[viator_tour destination=”675″ type=”1-mod” tours=”7957P4″]

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

puerto vallarta colorful houses

Nestled on the Bay of Banderas in western Mexico, Puerto Vallarta has been gay-friendly since the early 1980s when expat Americans and Canadians began resettling in the Old Town district. Today there are gay restaurants, bars, hotels (especially the famous Blue Chairs), and even an officially designated gay beach, Playa de los Muertos. The seaside village also hosts the annual Pink and Proud Women’s Party, and nearby Sayulita is gaining a reputation as a popular surfing spot for lesbians.

7 U.S. Cities for Celebrating LGBTQ+ Pride All Year Long

San Francisco. Bridge Building Outdoors Nature Ocean Water Sea Human Person Shoreline and Coast

The rainbows are here, and while LGBTQ+ Pride season always marks the return of summer, this June it marks the return of more community merriment, too. For many the pandemic has been a long stretch void of face-to-face quality time with far-flung friends. More than that, we’ve been separated from our favorite places, whether that’s a historic Cape Cod beach, sophisticated Southern hitching post, colorful coastal retreat , or sparkling metropolis.

So now that we’re breaking out our luggage again, where are our hearts leading us? For queer travelers, a few cherished destinations stand out for being rich in LGBTQ+ heritage and culture, where nothing can take the place of the real-life, in-person  community spirit .

New York City. City Town Urban Building High Rise Metropolis Downtown Landscape Outdoors and Nature

New York City

New Yorkers have generally remained cautious about pandemic risks, so expect some strategic mask-wearing around town (especially on public transit). But mostly, the city’s bustle is back, and locals and visitors are eager to get the summer fun started. The West Village remains the city’s dynamic queer hub, with iconic Stonewall Inn, Henrietta Hudson, Julius’, Cubbyhole , and other favorites all open with indoor and, for many, revamped outdoor spaces. NYC Pride returns in person the last week of June under the theme “Unapologetically Us,” along with the June 25 annual Dyke March, and June 26 Heritage of Pride march and PrideFest street fair in the Village. But every borough in NYC has its own LGBTQ+ events, so check out city-wide Prides and other happenings in Brooklyn , Queens , the Bronx , Staten Island , and Harlem . A distinct  Queer Liberation March  also is planned for June 26 as a peaceful protest to channel the early 1970s Stonewall protests, and evade corporate sponsorships.

Key West. Water Vehicle Transportation Vessel Watercraft Waterfront Dock Port Pier Marina and Boat

The easy-breezy vibes sparkle in Key West , where rainbow flags fly high, blowing in LGBTQ+ visitors for hot tropical getaways. The country’s southernmost city has long drawn free-thinking eccentrics and artists, be they writers, painters, musicians, or drag queens. The annual Pride Parade arrives June 5, again led by a 100-foot-long section of the original 1.25-mile “Sea to Sea Diversity Flag,” which, during the 2003 parade, covered the entirety of Duval Street. (Fun fact: Sections of the original Key West Diversity Flag are used in other Pride marches around the world, including New York City and Orlando .) There are dozens more Pride events around town, many hosted by local queer-owned and -allied establishments that are out-and-proud all year, including 801 Bourbon , Aqua , the Gardens Hotel , and LaTeDa Hotel and Piano Bar.

Philadelphia. city. strret

Philadelphia

LGBTQ+ pride runs deep in  Philadelphia , where some of the country’s very first homosexual civil-rights protests began in 1965, four years before New York City’s 1969 Stonewall uprising. Today, downtown Philadelphia’s “Gayborhood” carries on the legacy, complete with historical markers and streets named for local queer heroes. June 2022 marks the 50th anniversary of Philadelphia Pride, under the theme “PHL Pride 50: Our Community, Our Joy.” And this year’s new team of organizers, PHL Pride Collective , who are purposefully working on greater inclusivity for trans folx and people of color. The city is eager to welcome back queer travelers, with dozens of LGBTQ+ events ahead, from art pop-ups and a fun run; to a Bollywood dance night, Juneteenth family picnic, and free concerts. While you’re in the area, don’t miss the Keith Haring: A Radiant Legacy exhibit at the Michener Art Museum in nearby Doylestown.

San Francisco. Bridge Building Outdoors Nature Ocean Water Sea Human Person Shoreline and Coast

San Francisco

The LGBTQ+ living legend that is San Francisco re-delights travelers with every visit. Whether it’s the Castro—sometimes called the “LGBTQ+ capital of the world”—or the Mission District, or any other fabulous neighborhood, equality and inclusion are woven into the city’s fabric. The return of San Francisco Pride this year flashes back to the swinging 70s with the theme, “Love will keep us together.” After a tough past two Pride seasons, expect vivacious Bay Area crowds to bring loads of rainbow-tinted love to the Market Street route on June 26. But even if you can’t join the festivities, find year-round queer history at the GLBT Historical Society Museum , following steps of the Rainbow Honor Walk, sipping cocktails at the Castro’s historic bars, or taking in a show at the iconic Castro Theatre .

Chicago. City Town Urban Building Downtown High Rise Office Building Metropolis and Architecture

What locals know, visitors soon find out: Chicago has one of the most active LGBTQ+ communities in the country. Anchored by the action along North Halsted Street, the Northalsted/Boystown neighborhood is where visitors can tune into local queer culture, plus memorable gay-owned restaurants, shops, and clubs. There you’ll also find the Legacy Walk , a mile-long series of bronze markers with ever-changing memorial plaques commemorating LGBTQ+ artists, athletes, leaders, and other world-shapers. Chicago Pride blows into town for the two-day festival June 18 to 19, and parade June 26—where attendees will likely spot Chicago Mayor (and 2019 parade honorary grand marshal) Lori Lightfoot, the first LGBTQ+ Black woman to serve as mayor of a major U.S. city.

Old Harbour Life Saving Museum Race Point Beach Cape Cod. Building Boardwalk Bridge Architecture Tower Railing Water and...

Provincetown

All the fond memories of Provincetown will flood back now that the town is operating at full capacity for the season. And it’s just the ticket to soak up Cape Cod through summertime, where LGBTQ+ travelers can take their pick of whale watching, beach picnics, dune tours, arts festivals, drag bingo at the Crown & Anchor , and of course, the Boatslip ’s weekly Tea Dance. LGBTQ+ theme weeks organized by the Provincetown Business Guild mix up the tourist population all summer and into fall, including Bear Week, Family Week, FanFair 2022 (Transgender Week), and Women’s Week. Across Ptown’s venues, catch stellar cabaret, comedy, and stage shows at the Provincetown Theater , Art House , and other venues; and don’t miss luminous special events with Mx Justin Vivian Bond and drag star Nina West. Be sure to pack smart and splashy for August’s “Monsters, Myths & Legends” Carnival theme.

Houston Texas Skyline Across Park with Cyclists

Houston’s LGBTQ+ openness earned the spotlight back in 2010 with the election of Mayor Annise Parker, the first out lesbian leader of a major U.S. city (her two-term tenure concluded in 2016). And with more than a million revelers annually, Houston Pride is the nation’s fourth-largest Pride celebration, a rank befitting America’s fourth-largest city. This year brings scores of zesty events through June, including a pub crawl, pool party, runway fashion show, and diverse lineup of festival performers and DJs. The city rolls out the rainbow carpet to visitors all year long via its very own My Gay Houston website, sharing tips on gay-friendly businesses in neighborhoods like Montrose, Midtown, and Downtown.

Hilton La Romana, Dominican Republic

best lgbt friendly travel destinations

Nestled along the pristine beaches of La Romana — which is more secluded than the tourist-heavy destination of Punta Cana —  this adults-only all-inclusive escape offers something for foodies, wellness seekers, and beach bums alike. On-site, guests can enjoy 11 restaurants, eight bars and restaurants, and a sprawling 21,000-square-foot-spa. Other offerings include a casino, disco, and four pools. Each of the rooms feature private balconies or terraces. During the day (that is, when you’re not relaxing by the pool, beach, or spa), go windsurfing, take merengue lessons, or embark on a snorkeling excursion and spot tropical fish. Reviewers rave about the hospitable service and warm, welcoming staff. Hilton is also a member of the IGLTA.

In-room amenities include plush bathrobes, ultra-comfy beds, and a curated soundtrack of tunes to ensure a good night’s sleep. Once you’ve awakened, soak up the sun on the private beach, take a dip in one of the private pools, and savor top-notch cuisine from one of 13 drinking and dining options, which include everything from a Brazilian eatery to an Indian restaurant and hookah lounge. Be sure also to hit up the resort’s PH Spa, where hydrotherapy pools, body treatments, and massages await.

The adults-only, all-suite property offers breathtaking Majo Bay views, three sparkling swimming pools, a secluded cliffside beach, four bars, three restaurants, and private cabanas for lounging. Guests also have full access to the resort’s (more family-oriented) sister property, Sonesta Maho Beach  Resort, Casino & Spa , which is a must-visit for wellness-lovers (don’t miss the lavender and vanilla massage!) and those who want to practice their poker face or try their hand at roulette at the casino. Many reviewers have raved about the friendly and attentive staff members, and both properties are registered with the IGLTA.

best lgbt friendly travel destinations

The Happy Island is best known for its welcoming atmosphere, and this LGBTQ+-friendly resort —which attracts groups and couples alike of all ages—is no different. This private island Maldives escape is certainly worth adding to your bucket list. While it’s not adults-only, guests under 15 aren’t allowed. The property itself is breathtakingly beautiful, comprising just 15 overwater villas. Each is equipped with spacious patios and built-in ladders so you can step straight into the ocean. The resort only holds up to 34 guests at a time, so it’s perfect for those in search of seclusion and solitude. At The Retreat, you’ll find the restaurant, bar, spa, and a curated wine and cheese cellar. The all-inclusive resort is anything but typical, with butler service, endless excursions, and watersports included in your stay.

Royalton CHIC Suites Cancun, Mexico

best lgbt friendly travel destinations

The Royalton CHIC Suites is another member of the IGLTA. (FYI, it’s part of Marriott International’s Autograph Collection.) Its central location in the heart of Cancun—mere steps from the destination’s best nightclubs, shops, and dining venues—makes it nearly impossible to be bored. On-site, guests can enjoy white-sand beaches and picturesque, calm waves: both of which set the scene for a relaxing yet fun-filled escape. There are also three swimming pools and seven restaurants. Perhaps the best amenity of all, however, is the rooftop cabana lounge. Known as Level 18, this space transforms into an extravagant nightclub each evening (think themed parties, circus performers, DJs, and more).

Sanctuary Cap Cana, Dominican Republic

best lgbt friendly travel destinations

This Punta Cana all-inclusive is adults-only and boasts 323 suites (all of which are outfitted with private balconies, jetted tubs, and showers). At the tranquil spa, guests can choose from a range of hydrotherapy treatments, body wraps, and massages. On-site activities abound: Hang out by one of the six swimming pools, take a dance lesson or two, play a round of  tennis, listen to live music, attend a themed party, sing your heart out at karaoke, or visit the on-site nightclub. “The service and attention to our needs was simply amazing,” reports one guest.

Guests can also take advantage of the resort’s sister property, Coconut Bay Beach Resort , which offers its own array of amenities, such as CocoLand Waterpark. “This place was absolutely amazing. […] Every staff member was friendly and attentive. I’ve never smiled and had such a fun and relaxing time in my entire life,” writes one reviewer.

Grand Velas Los Cabos, Mexico

best lgbt friendly travel destinations

Grand Velas is one of Cabo’s most luxurious all-inclusive properties. Its contemporary design and eye-catching architecture are especially noteworthy, as are the seven gourmet eateries. Additionally, most of the accommodations here—all of which span over 1,100 square feet—have private plunge pools. The full-service, 35,000-square-foot spa is best known for its hydrotherapy offerings. There are also several swimming pools that overlook the beach, which is sandwiched between tall, picturesque cliffs. Surrounded by lush tropical gardens and a ‘gram-worthy lagoon, the 56-acre property is a nature lover’s paradise. Enjoy a tropical cocktail by the beach in between dips in the pool. Alternatively, go sailing, kayaking, or practice some yoga. Once you work up an appetite, head to one of the three restaurants to refuel before retreating to your room. The all-suite accommodations offer tons of natural light, beautiful woodwork, and plush linens. Don’t forget to check out the on-site spa, either. Guests have nothing but great things to say about the friendly staff, who work tirelessly to tailor to your every need.

Spice Island Resort, Grenada

best lgbt friendly travel destinations

This chic all-inclusive resort —which will reopen in October 2021—is located on a vibrant, quarter-mile-long stretch of sand. The family-friendly property is made up of upscale rooms and suites (the latter of which have private pools, and some have saunas as well). The property is also known for its spa, which utilizes local ingredients like chocolate, herbs, seaweed, and spices in its treatments. While tennis, cycling, golf, and afternoon tea service are included, excursions like sailing and scuba diving are available at an extra cost. Childrens’ programming is also available, as are two on-site restaurants. ”Across the board the staff are on top of all the little things that make their service truly outstanding”, says one reviewer.

This resort is known as the “Best Surf Resort” in the 2023 Travel Trade Maldives Awards , boasting one of the world’s best left-hand surf breaks, perfect for experienced surfers or those wanting to learn. Besides surfing, the resort offers diving, snorkeling, canoeing, windsurfing, and other water sports to explore the vibrant marine life and crystal-clear Maldivian waters. If water activities aren’t your thing, you can unwind by the pool, get pampered at the spa, or simply relax on the beach. The resort offers several accommodation options, from  Beach Villas, Sunset Beach Villas, and Ocean Villas to suit your preference. 7 Best Places For LGBTQ+ Travelers to Visit in 2023

7 Best Places For LGBTQ+ Travelers to Visit in 2023

We count down our top destinations for LGBTQ+ visitors to travel to.

This year LGBTQ + travelers want destinations that offer something special, whether that is cultural immersion, historical or culinary tours, out-of-this world adventure, gorgeous beaches, or just the biggest queer parties on the planet. With that in mind we chose our top seven countries, including destinations in the Americas, Europe , Asia , Oceania, and Africa . Join us as we count down to number one.

Cenote in Mexico by LRC Imagery/Getty Images

Mexico continues to be a top destination for queer travelers. The country’s tourism department (SECTUR) reports 3.5 million LGBTQ+ visitors annually.

The beachside resort town of Acapulco first gained an international queer contingent in the mid-20th century as a magnet for Hollywood celebs. It has recently experienced a resurgence and now its LGBTQ+ scene and businesses are luring more queers back to the region. It’s gaining a reputation as a gay party town with Las Vegas-style drag shows, techno nightclubs, and beachside dancing.

The capital of Jalisco, Guadalajara, is often called the “Gay Capital of Mexico” due to its embrace of the queer community. It is among the most LGBTQ-accepting in Latin America (Mexico City also ranks in the top five). Guadalajara is Mexico’s second largest city and offers diversity in food, cultural, and entertainment options. Its gayborhood is located in the historic center of the city, where parties spill into the streets most nights. Come during February to experience the local Carnival.

The Riviera Maya destination of Playa del Carmen features white-sand beaches and turquoise waters. There are three gay beaches here: Mamitas Beach, Coco Beach, and Xangrila Beach.

Becoming known as the “Mexican San Francisco,” Puerto Vallarta features some of the most beautiful beaches in the LGBTQ-embracing state of Jalisco. The city’s Romantic Zone is a popular spot during the day and locals and tourists mingle at buzzy queer clubs nearly every night of the week. During Pride (celebrated here in May), the neighborhood becomes one big block party. Puerto Vallarta offers many activities for those who want to have more adventurous experiences, including day trips to Punta de Mita and nearby Marietas Islands, where the diversity of birds and sea life has earned it the nickname of “the Mexican Galapagos.”

#6 Australia

Australia by Louise Denton Photography/Getty Images.

Australia is a dream destination for adventurers, albeit a distant one. The nation’s Great Barrier Reef just off the coast of Queensland is rightfully on many travelers’ bucket lists — and Sydney is undeniably a gay hot spot. But with abundant natural beauty, outdoor adventures, historical sites, and a rich Indigenous peoples’ culture, the island continent has much more to see.

In Sydney, New South Wales, the world-famous Harbor Bridge and Opera House are must-sees, with the more daring climbing the bridge itself. Also worth a visit is the Royal Botanical Gardens, the gay Oxford Street LGBTQ+ district, and the Sea Life Aquarium to observe Sphen and Magic (aka Sphengic), the world-famous gay penguin couple. You can also learn about Australia’s history as a penal colony with visits to Cockatoo Island and the Hyde Park Barracks. Walk the cliffs outside Bondi Beach and Manley, where at least 80 gay men were killed in the latter portion of the last century.

In Queensland the Great Barrier Reef may be the most famous tourist destination, but the state is also home to Daintree Rainforest.

At Adelaide in southern Australia, you can cage-dive with great white sharks. The area is also renowned for its wine regions, including McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Adelaide Hills, Clare Valley, and Coonawarra. To truly get off the beaten path, head north to Darwin, famous for its 86 degree waters. The Tiwi Islands, home to a large Indigenous population, are renowned for fishing and isolated resorts. The waters here are crystal clear and invitingly warm, but patrolled by deadly crocs.

Retrace the route of the 1994 film The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert , starting at the Imperial Hotel in Sydney, Proudly LGBTQ+ since 1983, the hotel features Priscillas, Drag N Dine, and Carlotta's Rooftop. Follow Imperial with visits to Broken Hill and its Queenslander-styled Palace Hotel , the mining community of Coober Pedy (BYO ping pong balls), and finishing at the Lasseters Hotel Casino in Alice Springs.

In late February and early March, Sydney will be hosting its annual Mardi Gras as well as Sydney WorldPride . It’s the first time WorldPride will be held in the southern hemisphere.

Malta by Trabantos/Getty Images

Malta is a small archipelago of islands, just off the southern coast of Sicily in the Mediterranean Sea. The country has been continuously occupied for almost 8,000 years as an important port and trading hub connecting Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. Its culture reflects these intersectional roots and Maltese food is a nuanced blend of many worlds.

Malta is known for gorgeous views and perfect year-round weather. Peak season is both crowded and pricey, but in spring or fall, fewer tourists compete for space on its beaches and in its restaurants.

Visit the fortified cities of Mdina and Birgu, the former established by Phoenicians in the 8th century B.C.E. Gozo should still be high on your list, even without the Azure Window, a limestone arch that once reached into the sea before collapsing in 2017. Visit the world-renowned Blue Lagoon on the island of Camino. The breathtaking natural pool features deep azure-colored waters.

Malta is gaining a reputation as one of the most queer-inclusive spots in Europe, with festive annual Pride celebrations every September. It would be difficult to name every gay bar and LGBTQ-welcoming establishment in Malta, but there are a few that top our list. We love club Lollipop, located in the coastal capital city of Valetta. The Birdcage Lounge in Rabat has a fun mixed crowd and karaoke. Though not an exclusively LGBTQ+ space, lesbian-owned Maori is popular due to its monthly parties for queer women. The Phoenicia in Valletta offers 1920s elegance and 5-star luxury while the Marco Polo Party Hostel in St Julian’s provides a lively mixed crowd.

#4 Thailand

Thailand by Thatree Thitivongvaroon/Getty Images

Thailand has a rich culture and long embrace of gender and sexual diversity, and outlaws LGBTQ+ discrimination. In the most LGBTQ-welcoming country in South East Asia, Bangkok is considered the region’s queer capital. On the city’s pedestrian-only streets in the gayborhood Silom, you’ll find gay bars including Circus, Balcony, and Stranger Bar (considered the epicenter of Bangkok drag culture). The neighborhood features many other LGBTQ+ establishments including hotels, massage parlors, clubs, saunas, and restaurants. After partying all night refresh by checking in for an advanced wellness experience at luxury spa Sindhorn Wellness by Resense.

Bangkok is enough to captivate any traveler for weeks on end, but you’ll want to visit other areas as well. Taking a train is a great way to travel through Thailand, but some areas can only be reached by boat. Gay tours are abundant, for example, Out Of Office offers numerous options from island hopping to culinary tours to a New Year’s celebration on a gay beach.

Phuket is another common queer destination. There the Patong neighborhood plays home to gay bar and cabaret club Zig Bar/Zag Club and the Patong beach where Phuket Pride is held each year.

Visit Koh Samui in southern Thailand, where the queer-run Samui Elephant Sanctuary allows elephants to retire from giving rides or entertaining tourists. Enjoy your own refuge at gay-owned Six Senses Samui Thailand which features an infinity pool overlooking the gulf of Thailand — and your own tree house. Party at Pride Bar Samui which features drag queens and karaoke.

#3 South Africa

South Africa by Pierre-Yves Babelon/Getty Images

South Africa is a land of amazing natural and cultural contrasts and is a much sought-after destination for adventurous LGBTQ+ travelers.

No visit to South Africa is complete without an extended stay in Cape Town. This cosmopolitan city has a vibrant food and arts scene with plenty of opportunities for exploring, and iconic Table Mountain looms over it all. To sample the city’s eclectic art scene try a walking tour of the Woodstock Street Art District. The Cape Town region also offers hiking, swimming, surfing, sport fishing, and golf. You can also try your hand at lawn bowling or take in a match of cricket. Day trips to nearby wine regions are highly recommended, with many tour operators providing outings.

Another must-see destination is Robben Island northwest of the city. Nelson Mandela served 18 of his 27 years in prison here. The island penal colony had a reputation for harsh conditions and prisoner abuse. Closed for good in 1996, it is now a South African National Heritage Site as well as an UNESCO World Heritage Site.

There is no hiding the nation’s ugly history of apartheid, the institutional system of racial segregation that plagued South Africa for decades. And yet the people persevered and overcame the oppressive system and continue to address the injustices that it wrought. Johannesburg’s Apartheid Museum enumerates those errors, while offering hope for the country’s future by highlighting the nation’s constitutional pillars enshrining freedom and equality (including for LGBTQ+ people). Consider also exploring the city with a walking tour, which can include spots important to both Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi, the Indian leader who lived in South Africa for over two decades.

An hour-long flight south takes you to Durban, famed for its Golden Mile of shoreline on the Indian Ocean. The city is home to the largest concentration of Indian nationals outside of India, and their cultural influences are reflected in the area’s diverse foodie scene. A visit to the nearby Valley of 1000 Hills provides an excellent opportunity to learn more about the Zulus, the country’s largest Indigenous tribe.

North of the city, a wind-blown, nondescript location is home to the Nelson Mandela Capture Site memorial and museum documenting not just Mandela’s 1962 arrest and 27-year imprisonment, but also the Nobel Prize winner’s subsequent political contributions.

#2 The Dutch Caribbean

Curaçao by Justin Lewis/Getty Images

The Caribbean islands represent a range of communities whose diversity has been intensified by their colonial pasts. The Dutch Caribbean (once known as the Dutch West Indies) are islands once claimed by the Netherlands, specifically: Aruba, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten.

The Dutch are some of the most accepting of LGBTQ+ rights and these islands embrace queer travelers, (though some admittedly haven’t extended true equality to all their own citizens).

Sint Maarten is half an island (the other half is Saint Martin, which follows French laws, including marriage equality). On the Dutch side, homosexuality was never a crime, but the government hasn’t embraced same-sex marriage rights. You’ll find plenty to do here when you can pull yourself away from the gorgeous beaches. The restaurant L’Escargot is known for its French cooking, and La Cage Aux Folles- style cabarets. Bliss is the island’s best gay-friendly nightclub. The open-air space has a pool, dance floor, and two bars that specialize in creative mixology, plus plenty of space for lounging.

Aruba hasn’t codified LGBTQ+ equality in law, but queer travelers will find themselves warmly welcomed to the “One happy island” that prides itself on embracing diversity. Those seeking adventure should turn to De Palm Tours for dune tours and off-road safaris; as well as SNUBA, snorkeling, and semi-submersible exploration of the underwater world. Pamper yourself with a visit to the spas at The Ritz-Carlton, Aruba , or Aruba Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino . Outside the hurricane belt, Aruba offers year-round sunshine, vibrant art and culinary scenes, and ambitious sustainability efforts. At last report, 7 Club Lounge Bar (@7), once known as Jimmy’s Place, remains closed.

Curaçao is one of the Caribbean’s smaller islands, with a population of 160,000, off the coast of Venezuela. The island never criminalized homosexual relations and in 2011, passed anti-discrimination protections for gay and bisexual people. Lyric’s Café was once the island’s only regular queer venue, but many locals now drink and dance at Wet and Wild Beach Club. Floris Suite Hotel’ s LGBTQ+ Rainbow Lounge holds quarterly parties and events. Nearby Moomba Beach is an adults-only gay-friendly beach where the boys hang out.

Toronto, Canada by Rudy Sulgan-Getty Images.tif

Canada is one of the most LGBTQ-inclusive countries in the world. In fact, it topped the 2022 LGBTQ+ Travel Safety Index , an annual ranking of the 203 safest (and worst) countries for queer travel. America’s neighbor to the north also has stunningly beautiful wilderness, leading ski resorts, vibrant Indigenous communities, and culturally diverse cities.

In the predominately French-speaking province of Quebec, Montréal has old-world European charm in neighborhoods with cobblestoned streets. The annual Fierté Montréal Pride Festival is one of Canada’s most colorful. The Gay Village’s Rue Sainte-Catherine, becomes a walking promenade during most summer months and the queers have busted out of the neighborhood, spilling into the surrounding historic district with additional LGBTQ-owned shops, spas, and restaurants.

On the banks of the Great Lakes, Toronto is said to hold the title for the most diverse metropolis in the world, where 230 nationalities are represented and the residents speak over 140 languages. The largest city in Canada’s kaleidoscope of cultures has helped spice up the vibrant culinary scene and neighborhoods. Toronto’s celebration of diversity extends to its LGBTQ+ citizens. The Village at Church and Wellesley remains a queer institution and the trendy Queen Street West is sprinkled with new LGBTQ+ hangouts.

Calgary is in the Alberta prairie but perfectly located to explore the Canadian Rockies and the country’s most stunning national parks. Nearby Jasper Basin holds one of the top gay ski weeks. Calgary is also known for its cowboys, and the city hosts the world’s largest gay rodeo association, so visitors may be surprised at its metropolitan neighborhoods and shocked it’s home to the biggest queer Canadian nightclub west of Montreal, Twisted Element.

Between the Pacific Ocean and the base of North Shore Mountains, Vancouver is a beautiful city that draws LGBTQ+ visitors year-round. Its location provides a great starting point for outdoor adventure whether it’s hiking the local trails, kayaking to Vancouver Island, or hitting the nearby slopes at Whistler, Canada’s top ski resort. As the country’s biggest port, the city has attracted a diverse population, which has helped fuel its bourgeoning foodie and art scenes. There are two gayborhoods: Davie Village, with a wide variety of gay bars, restaurants, and stores; and Commercial Drive (also locally known as The Drive), home to a thriving lesbian community. The largest Pride celebration in western Canada is held in Vancouver every August.

10 Most Welcoming U.S. Vacation Destinations for LGBTQ+ Families: Seattle, NYC, DC, Chattanooga

The most lgbtq-friendly vacation spots in the u.s. have fun attractions, lgbtq-run businesses, and are protected by lgbtq-inclusive laws..

Deanne Revel

When you think about inclusive family vacation spots in the U.S. , you probably think of the Anaheim and Orlando theme parks and other overtly welcoming destinations. But beyond the big theme park towns, there are some other great cities across the country packed with fun attractions, protected by LGBTQ-inclusive laws, and full of LGBTQ-run businesses. And these LGBTQ-friendly cities in the U.S. offer a warm welcome to all families.

Best U.S. Vacation Spots for LGBTQ+ Families

Here are my recommendations for family-oriented LGBTQ friendly travel destinations in the U.S., and tips for fun family activities and things to do while you’re there.

BEST TRIP EVER: 50 Best Family Vacation Ideas for All Ages

1. Long Beach, California

Long Beach is just south of LA (it’s about 45 minutes from Santa Monica), but it feels worlds away. It’s like a quaint and quirky small town straight from a sitcom. And if you’re traveling with your furry family member, Long Beach has the only beach in L.A. county where your dog can run wild and free off-leash as long as it’s under voice control.

FIND A DEAL: 12 Best Hotel Booking Sites for Cheap Prices

After all that fun in the sun, cool off with ice cream at either Long Beach Creamery or Afters . For big ticket thrills, visit the Aquarium of the Pacific, take a tour of the historic Queen Mary, or cruise the Alamitos Bay and the Naples Canals on a  private boat . And for something totally free, don’t miss the city’s vibrant series of  murals .

2. Fort Lauderdale, Florida

There’s no doubt that Fort Lauderdale is LGBTQ-friendly, though it kind of has a reputation as a party town. But there’s another side to this Florida beach destination with great attractions for all ages, such as Butterfly World and the  Museum of Discovery and Science .

FUN IN THE SUN: 10 Best Florida Beach Resorts for Families

If you’re traveling with teenagers interested in learning about LGBTQ history, check out the Stonewall National Museum and Archives , one of the largest gay libraries and archives in the U.S. The exhibitions change, but it’s a great activity—especially if you have queer teens looking to learn more about the LGBTQ+ community and the history of civil rights.

3. Seattle, Washington

The biggest city in the Pacific Northwest is also one of the most inclusive cities in America, with several streets in the hip Capitol Hill neighborhood adorned with rainbow flag crosswalks and businesses proudly displaying trans and rainbow flags all-year.

If you’re in the neighborhood, do not miss the ice cream at  Molly Moon’s . Beyond the touristy stops at Pike Place Market and the Space Needle , Seattle has some great attractions for families, such as the Museum of Pop Culture ( MoPOP ).

SPLASH ZONE: 13 Best Indoor Water Park Resorts in the U.S.

While the city has a rainy reputation, summer in Seattle is generally sunny and gorgeous. For the ultimate family vacation, come the last weekend of June for Seattle’s Pride weekend, when the region’s thriving gay community takes center stage and there’s a huge LGBTQ+ parade and picnic celebrating the city’s queer communities.

4. Denver, Colorado

Denver Mural

In addition to its thriving LGBTQ+ scene and annual PrideFest summer festival, Denver is also a great destination for active families since it has so many outdoor adventures right downtown—including 85 miles of bike trails and the manmade whitewater kayak chutes at Confluence Park. And just outside the city, there’s a world of hiking and camping as it’s only an hour and a half from Rocky Mountain National Park .

TRAVEL WITH TEENAGERS: 10 Best Vacation Ideas for Families with Teens

But for something incredibly special—especially for music lovers—plan your trip around a concert at Red Rocks. The open-air outdoor amphitheater in Red Rocks Park has some of the best acoustics in the world and hosts big-name acts.

5. Oahu, Hawaii

Surfboards lined up on Oahu beach

All of the Hawaiian islands are very LGBTQ-friendly, so if you’re a same sex couple planning a family vacation to the Aloha State and don’t know which island to choose, the right fit will depend on your family’s interests. If you love the outdoors and hiking, Kauai is your island. If you love hanging out in the water and snorkeling all day, look to Maui (a particularly great spot for winter vacations when you can watch humpback whales on their annual migratory journey).

ALOHA SPIRIT: Which Hawaiian Island Is Right for Your Next Trip?

But if you want a little bit of everything, Oahu is probably the best bet for your family. Plus, Honolulu is home to the  Hawai’i LGBT Legacy Foundation , which hosts several Pride festivals and events throughout the year. If you’re traveling with little ones, consider staying at one of the best Hawaii all-inclusive resorts for families, Disney’s Aulani Resort and Spa , about 45 minutes from downtown Waikiki. The hotel’s cast members (Disney’s term for employees) undergo the same training as park employees for inclusion and sensitivity and work hard to create magical vacations for all.

6. San Diego, California

If half of your family loves to go-go-go on vacation and the other half just wants to take it slow-slow-slow, San Diego is a great compromise for summer vacations or any time of year. It’s got a little bit of everything, from the world-renowned  San Diego Zoo  and the surrounding museum-packed Balboa Park , to some of the best family-friendly—and most wheelchair accessible—beaches in the world.

STRESS-FREE VACATIONS: 21 Best All-Inclusive Resorts in the U.S.

If you have a car, drive 30 minutes up the coast to  The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch . The colorful rows of giant ranunculus are a must-see in the spring.

7. New York City, New York

New York City is one of the best vacation spots for trans and queer kids since there are so many LGBTQ+ cultural sights to see and be inspired by. It’s a great trip to take if your kid or teen is transitioning and expressing a new gender outside of the home for the first time, or if your child is searching for more LGBTQ+ representation and role models. The  Leslie–Lohman Museum of Art  is solely dedicated to representing LGBTQ+ artists and there are a number of shows on Broadway that feature LGBTQ+ stories and characters.

TEEN TRIPS: 10 Best All-Inclusive Family Resorts for Teens

If your teens love to shop and thrift, funky Williamsburg, Brooklyn, is packed with LGBTQ-friendly boutiques and shops. And for something really special, make a reservation at  Bindle & Keep  for a custom-fitted shirt, pair of pants, or a suit. The bespoke LGBTQ-owned company is all about making clothes that are tailor-made to the customer, and the experience can be incredibly powerful for a teen struggling with self esteem and acceptance.

Of course, just as important as seeing iconic U.S. tourist attractions like Times Square and the Statue of Liberty, you cannot go on a New York vacation without visiting the  Stonewall National Monument  in Greenwich Village. Make sure your kids have their National Parks passports so they can get a stamp for their visit while they learn about LGBTQ heritage and the history of civil rights.

8. Washington, D.C.

Washington, D.C., is one of the best budget-friendly trips for families because most attractions are free, from the National Mall and the major memorials to 17 Smithsonian museums, galleries, and a zoo—all with free admission.

NO PASSPORT NEEDED: 8 Best Puerto Rico All-Inclusive Resorts for Families

While you can’t see and do it all in one trip, make sure to prioritize  The National Museum of American History . The museum is continually adding to and exploring its resources to better represent LGBTQ+ identities. For the little ones, the museum’s The   Muppets Take American History series features adorable surprise pop-ups throughout the museum.

9. Chattanooga, Tennessee

The Southeast isn’t the most LGBTQ-friendly region in the U.S., and some areas can be dangerous for LGBTQ+ travelers. But as someone in the LGBT community with my own family, I can say that after growing up and living in the South (Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee), there’s a real gem for families, and it’s not the big city of Atlanta. It’s tiny, quirky Chattanooga . This funky town on a river has a huge art scene and, with that, a more welcoming, diverse environment than other Southern cities.

MAKE MEMORIES: 25 Best Family Vacation Spots in the U.S. for All Ages

There are tons of attractions for the whole family in Chattanooga, too. The Tennessee Aquarium is one of the best aquariums in the country. Chattanooga is also home to the tallest underground waterfall in the U.S., Ruby Falls. And your little ones will love the fairytale caverns and gardens at Rock City. If all that sightseeing worked up an appetite, head straight to  Community Pie  for pizza and homemade gelato. And for breakfast or brunch, you have to swing by the eccentric, Halloween-themed  Aretha Frankensteins .

10. Chicago, Illinois

Kids splashing in Chicago (Photo: @ilenebauer via Twenty20)

From the Shedd Aquarium to Navy Pier, Chicago is packed with fun attractions for kids. And if you do visit the world-famous spot overlooking Lake Michigan, be sure to check out the Chicago Children’s Museum , which has an impressive  LGBTQ inclusion program  with special training for museum staff and community events for LBGTQ families.

BRING THE WHOLE FAMILY: 15 Best All-Inclusive Resorts for Families of 5 or More

If your kiddo wants to go to a game at Wrigley Field, The Cubs, like other MLB teams, do a special Pride night (usually in June). It’s incredibly empowering to see famous athletes decked out in rainbow-colored socks and uniforms.

Essential Tips For LGBTQ+ Travelers

T raveling can be a wonderful way to explore new places and cultures, but for LGBTQ+ individuals, it can also come with unique challenges and considerations. From finding accepting destinations to navigating local customs and laws, LGBTQ+ travel requires a bit of extra planning and research. The post includes my tips for lgbtq+ travelers!

As you are conducting your research, keep in mind that everyone is speaking from their own unique, identity-based perspective. Because of the diversity within the LGBTQ+ community, one person’s experience could be completely different from another. However, with the right preparation, LGBTQ+ travelers can have safe and enjoyable experiences all around the world.

Here are some tips for LGBTQ+ travelers planning to travel:

1. Research Destinations -no a tip for lgbtq+ travelers to skip

Not all destinations are equally accepting of LGBTQ+ individuals, and it’s important to research the local laws, customs, and attitudes before deciding where to go. In some countries, homosexuality is illegal, and even in places where it’s legal, discrimination and harassment may still occur. Even simple acts of affection could lead to unintentionally offending locals, putting them in a dangerous situation.

LGBTQ+ travelers can consult resources like the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, and Intersex Association (ILGA) to learn about local laws and attitudes towards the LGBTQ+ community in different parts of the world. It can also be extremely beneficial to find a travel agent specializing in LGBTQ+ travel to help find the best LGBTQ+ tour operators in these countries.

Just because same-sex relationships may be outlawed, it doesn’t mean a member of the LGBTQ+ community cannot travel there. It just means extra precautions may need to be taken. There are more than 80 countries that have made commitments to welcome LGBTQ+ travelers.

2. Choose LGBTQ+ Friendly Accommodations

Choosing accommodations that are LGBTQ+ friendly can help ensure a more comfortable and welcoming experience. Many LGBTQ+ travelers prefer to stay at LGBTQ+ owned or operated establishments or hotels with a reputation for being LGBTQ+ friendly.

A specialized travel agent can assist in searching for and booking LGBTQ+ friendly accommodations. Travel agents can also ensure that things like the bed arrangement and romantic packages with “His and Hers” labels will not pose a problem – something a straight couple would not have to worry about. It is these small details that your LGBTQ+ specialized travel agent can handle and allow peace of mind for their clients.

If you are interested in resorts in Mexico and the Caribbean check out my blog post here!

3. Connect with Local LGBTQ+ Communities

Connecting with local LGBTQ+ communities can provide valuable insights into local customs and attitudes towards LGBTQ+ individuals, as well as help LGBTQ+ travelers find safe and welcoming spaces. LGBTQ+ travelers can reach out to local LGBTQ+ organizations or social media groups to connect with other LGBTQ+ individuals in their destination.

This can help them find LGBTQ+ friendly bars, clubs, and events, as well as make new friends and connections. Your travel professional is a great resource to connect you with these local communities.

4. Be Mindful of Safety

LGBTQ+ travelers should always be mindful of their safety, particularly in unfamiliar environments. They should avoid putting themselves in potentially dangerous situations and should always be aware of their surroundings. This can unfortunately include avoiding public displays of affection, especially in areas where it may not be accepted, and being cautious when meeting new people, particularly online.

LGBTQ+ travel can come with unique challenges, but with the right preparation and research, it can also be a rewarding and enriching experience. By utilizing a travel professional to choose LGBTQ+ friendly destinations, accommodations, and activities, connecting with local LGBTQ+ communities, and being mindful of safety, LGBTQ+ travelers can have safe and enjoyable experiences all around the world.

Tips for LGBTQ+ Travelers…Activities To Enjoy

There are amazing destinations and activities for LGBTQ+ travelers to look forward to this season. Here are some of the top LGBTQ+ travel activities to consider for your next adventure:

1. Pride Festivals

Pride festivals are an exciting way to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community while exploring a new destination. Some of the largest and most well-known Pride festivals include New York City Pride, San Francisco Pride, and London Pride. However, many smaller cities and towns around the world also host Pride celebrations that are worth checking out.

2. Cruising

A cruise can allow everyone to enjoy a wide range of activities and entertainment options onboard, including LGBTQ- themed events, shows, and parties. Additionally, many cruise lines have policies and training programs in place to ensure that all guests and crew members are treated with respect and dignity, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. LGBT travelers can fully express themselves and connect with like-minded people from around the world.

3. Local LGBTQ+ Bars and Clubs

LGBTQ+ bars and clubs are a great way to experience the local queer scene and meet new people. Whether you’re looking to dance the night away or enjoy a few drinks with friends, there are plenty of LGBTQ+ establishments to choose from in many major cities around the world.

4. Historical Sites and Museums

Learning about LGBTQ+ history and culture can be an enriching experience while traveling. Some of the most popular LGBTQ+ historical sites and museums include the Stonewall Inn in New York City, the Gay and Lesbian Holocaust Memorial in Berlin, and the ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives in Los Angeles.

5. Outdoor activities

From hiking and camping to surfing and skiing, there are plenty of outdoor activities that can be enjoyed by LGBTQ+ travelers. Consider visiting national parks or other natural wonders, such as Yosemite National Park in California or the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.

6. Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteering with LGBTQ+ organizations can be a great way to give back while traveling. Many organizations offer opportunities to get involved in local LGBTQ+ advocacy and community-building efforts, while also providing a chance to meet new people and make a difference.

Florida's official tourism site removes 'LGBTQ Travel' section

Visit Florida's LGBTQ section in 2024

Florida’s official tourism website quietly removed a landing page for the state’s LGBTQ-friendly travel destinations sometime in the past four months.

The website for the state’s tourism marketing corporation, VisitFlorida.com, had an “LGBTQ Travel” section that no longer exists, according to archived versions of the site viewable on the Internet Archive. The landing page previously featured blog posts and videos related to the state’s gay-friendly beaches, Pride events and LGBTQ road trip ideas.

“There’s a sense of freedom to Florida’s beaches, the warm weather and the myriad activities — a draw for people of all orientations, but especially appealing to a gay community looking for a sense of belonging and acceptance,” the landing page used to read. “Whether you’re a couple seeking a romantic getaway or a modern family searching for kid-friendly fun, here are some LGBTQ-friendly destinations for you, throughout the Sunshine State.”

The link where the LGBTQ Travel page had been (https://www.visitflorida.com/things-to-do/cultural/lgbtq/) now directs users to a general “things to do” landing page. It is unclear exactly when the landing page was removed, but it was available as recently as April 19, according to the Internet Archive. It is also unclear why Visit Florida, a nonprofit created as a public-private partnership by the Florida Legislature in 1996, removed the landing page and who was behind the decision.

The website does continue to provide travel information for destinations specific to other minority groups, including Black and Hispanic travelers.

Visit Florida did not immediately return a request for comment.

Visit Florida's LGBTQ page in 2021

Rachel Covello runs OutCoast , a travel blog that promotes Florida as an LGBTQ-inclusive destination. Covello, a lesbian who lives in St. Petersburg, said the “LGBTQ Travel” landing page has existed on Visit Florida’s website since at least 2021. She said she first noticed that the landing page was missing last month.

“It really feels like we were just erased in a way,” Covello said.

“We want LGBT people to come here, we have really cool places to highlight and showcase,” she added.“But when the state-run platform removes any trace of us being in Florida, it sends a pretty strong message to our travelers, to our community in Florida.”

Not all references to LGBTQ people or LGBTQ-friendly places have been removed from the site. For example, if one types “LGBT” in the site’s search function, five results pop up, three of them for venues described as “LGBT Friendly.”

Maryann Ferenc, a small business owner who served as the chair of Visit Florida from 2017 to 2018, said there was a lot of LGBTQ-related travel information on the site during her time, including information about suggested itineraries and recommended beaches. She questioned whether stripping the site of its LGBTQ Travel section and other LGBTQ-related content s was a smart business move.

“To be a great tourism community, you need to be open and welcoming. That’s the basics of hospitality, right?” she said. “When I was chair, we talked about, ‘Could we be No. 1 in hospitality? How could we measure being the most hospitable state in the Union?’ This certainly wouldn’t qualify for that.”

Ferenc added that diversifying the state’s tourism industry was one of her main objectives when she led the organization.

“All of our diverse markets are important to us getting all of the business that is our fair share of the statewide, national and international tourism market,” she said. “It’s important that we have that diversity, not only because of the amount of money that will be spent by a diverse market, but by the diverse places in which that money will be spent.”

The removal of the LGBTQ Travel section from VisitFlorida.com is the latest in a yearslong effort to restrict queer history and the expression of LGBTQ identities in the state.

Since 2021, Florida has enacted legislation to limit the instruction of sexual orientation and gender identity in its public schools, to limit the ability of trans minors from accessing transition-related health care or from participating on school sports teams and to defund diversity programs at Florida colleges.

In recent years, Florida lawmakers also unsuccessfully attempted to limit drag shows, an artform that has decades-old roots in the LGBTQ community. Some of the state’s schools have also voluntarily removed or banned LGBTQ-related books or books with queer characters.

Just last week, New College of Florida tossed hundreds of books in the trash , with many of the discarded titles appearing to be related to LGBTQ issues, race and women’s rights.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis notably waged a yearslong legal battle with Disney , which has a massive corporate footprint in the state, after the company came out against the state’s so-called “ Don’t Say Gay ” law. Disney settled with the state this year.

Last year, the Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest LGBTQ advocacy group, and the statewide LGBTQ nonprofit Equality Florida issued a travel advisory detailing the risks of traveling to the state and citing “the devastating impacts of laws that are hostile to the LGBTQ community.”

A recent survey of 2,300 LGBTQ Americans by the International LGBTQ+ Travel Association (IGLTA) found that 52% of respondents indicated hesitancy or outright refusal to travel to Florida due to anti-LGBTQ legislation passed in recent years. However, about 66% of respondents also said that they would be willing to visit LGBTQ-friendly cities within states that have anti-LGBTQ laws.

In 2017, within days of former president Trump’s inauguration, his administration similarly scrubbed nearly all mentions of LGBTQ people and issues from the websites of federal agencies and the White House.

Things To Do

Travel | are you ready to unleash travel adventures with your dog.

best lgbt friendly travel destinations

Bringing your dog along on your travel adventures can be a blast, but how do you make sure the trip is fun and stress-free for you both? Taking advantage of these dog-friendly options and travel tips can help you plan a getaway for you and your four-legged friend.

Traveling with pets has become increasingly popular in recent years. In response, the travel industry has expanded their offerings for vacationers who bring their dogs along. Pet-friendly stays, activities and transportation are making it easier and more fun to travel with dogs.

For many pet owners, their dog is their best friend. Having them along as a companion can provide welcome company. Among 34 to 54 year olds, the number of people who prefer to bring their pets on vacation has increased to 40% per data from Allianz . Bringing your dog on vacation also eliminates the need to find pet care while you are out of town.

Although many places will welcome your dog, trying to go somewhere that dogs are not allowed can interrupt your trip or add extra stress. Before you book hotels and pack your bags, choose the right itinerary to ensure a great trip for you and your pup.

Best pet-friendly destinations for your next trip

Many cities are dog-friendly for both residents and visitors. By choosing one of these cities to visit, you’ll have a better chance of finding accommodations and activities for your dog. Fortunately, many of these cities are also exciting travel destinations.

Key West, Florida

For a pup-friendly beach escape, head to Key West in Florida. Beaches in South Florida offer beautiful stretches of sand and sparkling water. You and your dog can relax in the sun, splash in the waves and explore the city. Head to the Key West Dog Beach for off-leash fun. Dogs are also welcome on Lazy Dog Kayak Eco-Tours.

Sacramento, California

Forbes chose Sacramento as the most dog-friendly city in the U.S. based on available accommodations and activities. Sacramento is highly walkable and has dozens of dog parks, restaurants with dog-friendly patios and accommodations that take pets. Nature trails and the nearby Sierra Nevada Mountains provide plenty of hiking. For relaxing, Sacramento is known as the Farm to Fork Capital and has a burgeoning wine culture.

Edisto Island, South Carolina

Edisto Island is a South Carolina barrier island less than an hour away from Charleston. It is a quiet beach destination for a laid-back, pet-friendly escape. Edisto Beach welcomes dogs to the four-and-a-half-mile shoreline and Edisto Beach State Park has trails for hiking. You can also bring your dog along on a nature tour by Botany Bay Ecotours.

Navigating hotels, restaurants and attractions with your dog

It’s beneficial to map out the experience for you and your dog before you depart. Start by picking a dog-friendly hotel. Hotel brands at all price points have rooms that accommodate dogs. Some even provide extras, like dog treats or water bowls, on check in.

When booking, LaDell Carter, founder of Royal Expression Travels, notes, “Some hotels might advertise as pet-friendly but impose restrictions such as weight limits or prohibitions against leaving pets unattended in rooms. To avoid any unwelcome surprises, it’s crucial to verify these details beforehand.”

Pet-friendly restaurants and activities

Restaurants with outdoor seating will often accept well-behaved dogs. In Hilton Head Island, for instance, Skull Creek Boathouse offers shade, fans and water bowls for dogs on their patios, letting you and your dog enjoy brunch in Hilton Head together.

When planning what to do on vacation, focus on outdoor activities as those are most likely to be dog-friendly. Hikes, lakes, local parks, beaches and national seashores are ideal places to hang out with your dog. Individual businesses may also permit dogs. Check out city tourism sites, online forums and local business websites for more ideas.

Planning transportation with a dog

While there are many dog-friendly vacation destinations, getting your dog there can be a challenge. Consider how you want to travel and what your dog is comfortable with when planning your trip. You’ll also want to check what requirements your transport method and destination have for dogs. Vaccination records, health certificates and microchips are often required, especially for international travel. Also, keep in mind that new rules for entering the U.S. will start in August 2024.

Plane travel with a dog

In their survey, Forbes found that about 33% of dog owners travel by plane with their pup. To meet demand, airlines are providing more options for dogs that fly. Several major airlines permit small pets to travel in the cabin as long as they are in a carrier that will fit under the seat in front of you. According to NerdWallet , Alaskan Airlines, Frontier, Delta, Southwest, United and others permit pets for an extra fee. On major carriers that permit larger dogs, the dog must be kenneled and travel in cargo.

Some boutique airlines like BARK Air are offering another option. Aboard smaller planes, dogs get to sit wherever they like and move about the cabin. These airlines prioritize a relaxing flight for dogs. Dave Stangle, VP of Brand Marketing at BARK notes, “All furry passengers have access to various aids such as calming treats, noise-canceling earmuffs and calming jackets to ensure a stress-free and enjoyable flight.” Dog-first airlines may offer complimentary options like meals for the pups and the humans.

Bringing the dogs on road trips

If your destination is within driving distance, road trips can be a great way to travel with pets. Most dogs like car rides, and the familiar environment is often less stressful for both of you. Traveling by car also makes it easy to stop for stretch and potty breaks.

Whenever you are driving with your dog along as a passenger, make sure your pup is secured and won’t cause a distraction. Travel crates are a good way to secure your dog both in the car and at your destination. Dog seat belts and backseat hammocks can also keep you and your dog safe and comfortable while road tripping. If your dog isn’t often in the car, do a few practice rides before setting off on your trip.

Plan your next adventure with your dog

As more cities, hotels and airlines add pet-friendly accommodations, it has never been easier to travel with your furry friends. Join the trend of traveling with your dog and enjoy vacation in an entirely new way.

7 Last-Minute Escapes for Labor Day Weekend

If you’re still hoping to stretch out the last days of summer, there are places in North America that are not too hot, not too crowded and not necessarily that far away.

A cityscape of buildings and narrow streets that leads to a tall tower on a hill. Behind it is a large bay with small islands and boats.

By Shannon Sims

It might sound like an impossible request: a last-minute Labor Day getaway with gorgeous weather and minimal crowds that you can squeeze into a long weekend. There are good reasons many destinations across North America won’t fit the bill. Wildfires are burning in some parts of the West, tropical disturbances are brewing in the Caribbean, the East Coast’s coastal retreats are packed, and much of the South is sweaty and oh so steamy. But if you’re still hoping to stretch out the last days of summer, there are places that are not too hot, not too crowded and not necessarily that far away.

Here are seven inspirations in North America for a Labor Day getaway.

North Carolina

Hike to magical waterfalls

Less than an hour’s drive from downtown Asheville, N.C., and covering 500,000-plus acres, Pisgah National Forest is a magical place to be immersed in nature. American goldfinches and Carolina chickadees sing high above waterfalls framed by lush green trees, and babbling streams pour down moss-covered rocks hiding salamanders, newts and crayfish.

During the summer, these wooded areas are chock-full of children at summer camp, and the trails are often busy with hikers. But by Labor Day, most of the kids have returned home, while the weather is often perfect, with average temperatures in the seventies. You have your pick of activities — bird-watching, fly fishing, waterfall dousing and hiking.

Easy trails can be found at the North Carolina Arboretum , but for a shaded, moderate hike to a waterfall in which you can douse, check out Catawba Falls Trail . For another moderate hike (but no swimming), there is Linville Gorge and Falls , nicknamed the Grand Canyon of the Southern Appalachians. Advanced hikers can summit the 6,684-foot Mount Mitchell , the highest peak in the Eastern United States, in Mount Mitchell State Park, which is surrounded by Pisgah Forest.

Later, make your way back to Asheville , where a robust restaurant and brewery scene offers a perfect setting for sharing stories of your day. Local favorites include Cúrate for upscale tapas, Chai Pani for Indian food and Wicked Weed Brewing for hoppy deliciousness.

See San Francisco’s best-loved sights

“The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco,” may be a clichéd phrase, but anyone who has visited this California city during the summer most likely experienced fog, dank air and brisk wind. But September and October are San Francisco’s warmest and brightest months of the year.

A long weekend is just enough for first timers to sample the city’s best-known attractions. Walk or bike across the Golden Gate Bridge . Board a cable car as it clangs up and down the city’s hills. Explore Alcatraz Island on a three-hour tour (book ahead). Take in the Fisherman’s Wharf area, which may be less chaotic with many children back in school. Watch a home game of the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park , right on the bay. Or check out the Presidio Tunnel Tops , a newly developed stretch of national park land featuring stunning panoramic views.

The city is a particularly special destination for those interested in L.G.B.T.Q. history. The GLBT Historical Society Museum , nicknamed the Queer Smithsonian, is a good place to start, as is a stroll through the Castro neighborhood or a stop at the Castro’s first gay bar, opened in 1963 as the Missouri Mule (now called Beaux).

Swim, fish, boat, then sip, at the Finger Lakes

One of the largest Finger Lakes in upstate New York, Keuka Lake stretches about 20 miles and draws visitors with clear-water swimming, paddling, kayaking and fishing. Labor Day marks the end of its high summer season.

Visitors can use picnic tables, playgrounds and swimming areas off sandy beaches at Keuka Lake State Park near Branchport or Red Jacket Park in the village of Penn Yan, on the lake’s northern end.

On its southern shores, the charming village of Hammondsport has cafes, shops and restaurants, many of which are clustered around the Pulteney Square Historic District .

Fishing is a big draw, with brown trout, yellow perch and more inhabiting the lake’s deep waters. You can buy your own fishing equipment at Jake’s Boat Livery , or get the professionals to do it by chartering a fishing expedition through Summit to Stream Adventures .

Don’t forget the wine: 20 vineyards are scattered around the lakeshore, with six part of the Keuka Lake Wine Trail . You can visit most wineries on your own or with a tour.

Keuka Lake is a one- to two-hour drive from airports in Rochester, Ithaca, Syracuse or Buffalo. The lake is about a five-hour drive from New York City.

Soak your stress away in alpine splendor

During Labor Day weekend, the I-70 corridor that connects Denver to the ski towns to the west, like Winter Park, Keystone and Breckenridge, can be bumper to bumper, especially getting back on Monday.

But nestled in the San Juan Mountains, about an hour’s drive from Telluride, is Ouray, an often overlooked gem for outdoor fun. Sure, there’s great hiking and canyoning, but there aren’t many towns where you can stroll down Main Street and stop into a boutique for shopping, a cafe for coffee and a hot springs for soaking. Ouray Hot Springs Pool is sulfur-free — in other words, no rotten-egg stink — and offers not just one pool but many: The family-friendly pools feature water slides, a volleyball net and a rolling log, while the adults-only soaking section is kept between 102 and 106 degrees.

Montrose Regional Airport , about an hour’s drive from Ouray, has direct flights to Chicago, Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth and Denver.

Sample delicious urban delights

You won’t scratch the surface of what Mexico City offers in a long weekend, so consider tossing away those checklists and instead soak up the atmosphere in one or two neighborhoods.

Start by signing up for the city’s bike share app, Ecobici , for an easy way to get around town. The Roma neighborhood, a favorite among travelers, has shaded, walkable streets; inviting plazas; and some of the city’s best restaurants. For a neighborhood with a tad fewer tourists, try La Condesa , a short bike ride from Roma and between the two lovely green spaces called Bosque de Chapultepec and Parque México . Shopaholics should visit Polanco , where the commercial thoroughfare Presidente Masaryk Avenue offers luxury stores.

Whichever neighborhood you pick to explore, you’ll be delighted by the quality and flavors of food offered at the city’s restaurants, food carts and 11,000-plus taco shops. Even if a corner spot looks shabby, it might be producing food that could rank among the best bites you’ve ever had. Look no further than Taquería El Califa de León, an unassuming taco stand that won a Michelin star this year , as an example of the culinary magic that lies around any given corner.

Nova Scotia

Time-travel in a 1700s fishing village

About 62 miles southwest of downtown Halifax along Nova Scotia’s South Shore, breezy Lunenburg is a fishing village with charm — and fresh seafood — to spare.

Old Town Lunenburg is considered by UNESCO as the best surviving example of a planned British colonial settlement in North America. Its colorful homes face tall ships moored in the harbor, transporting visitors back to the 1700s. Stroll around the area on your own, popping into local shops and restaurants, or sign up for a walking tour .

At the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic , part of the Nova Scotia Museum , you can experience what life was like in a fishing village throughout the centuries, from early Mi’kmaq communities to the arrival of Black Loyalists in 1783 to today. The museum is housed in an old fish processing plant, and the Old Fish Factory Restaurant now serves Nova Scotia lobster rolls on a wharf-side patio.

Fresh lobster is available year-round in Nova Scotia, so check out some stops on the Nova Scotia Lobster Trail . But don’t forget much of the Atlantic’s bounty: mussels, scallops, halibut, Arctic char, cod — even a seaweed called dulse — can be found on local menus.

Roam and ride in the sand dunes

The Great Lakes were made for summer, but the challenge is finding a spot that isn’t too crowded. Silver Lake Sand Dunes is a destination even many Michiganders don’t know about.

Located an hour-and-a-half drive from Grand Rapids on Lake Michigan’s eastern coastline, the dunes comprise 2,000 acres and are part of Silver Lake State Park. Even though they are situated in the heart of the United States, the dunes will make you feel as if you’re roaming the sands of Arabia.

Activities at the park include swimming, canoeing and horseback riding along the beach, or hiking through the surrounding evergreen forests.

But a classic way to explore the dunes is through Mac Wood’s Dune Rides , a local company that for nearly a century has been taking visitors in open-top trucks for thrilling and informative rides through the sand.

While in the area, be sure to visit the Little Sable Point Lighthouse , an 1874 tower that was made more accessible to the public in 2010. Climb the tower and take in the lake, forests and dunes below.

An earlier version of this story included a photo caption that misstated the location of the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City. It is in Centro district, not Polanco. It also misstated the location of the Silver Lake Sand Dunes. The dunes are on Lake Michigan’s eastern coastline, not western.
