Geography, environment, & weather

Italy’s distinct boot shape is iconic, with the country extending a playful kick towards the Mediterranean, notably jutting out to include Sicily. Bordered by Switzerland, France, Austria, and Slovenia, Italy boasts a rugged terrain, with the majestic Alps forming its imposing northern perimeter. Comprising twenty unique regions and hosting a population of approximately 61 million, Italy is a land rich in geographical and cultural diversity.

The allure of Italy goes beyond its well-known cities and towns steeped in ancient Roman history. Regions like Tuscany, Umbria, and Southern Italy beckon with their picturesque landscapes adorned with sprawling olive groves, offering a serene escape for mature travelers seeking to immerse themselves in the beauty of the countryside.

When it comes to climate, Italy’s weather exhibits remarkable variability across its regions. Cities like Rome, Florence, Umbria, and Assisi typically experience mild conditions, ideal for leisurely exploration. On the other hand, Southern Italy, encompassing the enchanting Amalfi Coast, Sorrento, Sicily, and Naples, enjoys mild winters and scorching summers. In contrast, Northern Italy, home to Venice, Verona, Milan, and the tranquil Lake Maggiore, witnesses colder temperatures during winter, both in the daytime and at night. Certain locales can become parched and sweltering in the summer months. Moreover, for those venturing to the mountains pre, post, or during winter, packing warm attire suitable for snowy conditions is essential for a comfortable experience.

World Heritage sites

Italy boasts an impressive array of 48 UNESCO World Heritage Sites . Each site holds immense historical and cultural value, showcasing Italy’s rich heritage. Among these treasures are the historic centers of iconic towns such as Florence, Rome, Naples, Urbino, and Siena, each offering a glimpse into Italy’s storied past.

One standout site is the Church and Dominican Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie, famed for housing Da Vinci’s masterpiece, “The Last Supper”. This cultural gem not only holds artistic significance but also serves as a testament to Italy’s artistic legacy.

Another must-see is the Piazza del Duomo in Pisa, home to the renowned leaning tower and three other cultural monuments. This vibrant square encapsulates Italy’s architectural prowess and rich history in a unique and captivating manner.

For nature enthusiasts and admirers of sublime landscapes, the Medici Villas and Gardens in Tuscany offer a serene escape into the lush beauty of the region. These villas stand as a testament to the harmonious relationship between architecture and nature, embodying the essence of Italian Renaissance elegance.

Exploring these UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Italy is a journey through time and culture, where each site unravels a unique aspect of Italy’s illustrious past and vibrant present.

Eating & Drinking

The tour director and tour guide on your guided tour in Italy are valuable resources for assisting with ordering meals or a coffee . In Italy, the culinary traditions are distinct, with Italians typically indulging in a modest breakfast, a single-dish lunch, and a single-dish dinner. A typical Italian breakfast consists of a pastry paired with a cappuccino; opting for a cappuccino later in the day instead of an espresso is considered unconventional. It’s customary in smaller towns for shops to close for approximately an hour during lunchtime, underscoring the significance of this meal in Italian culture. Dinner is generally enjoyed after 8pm.

When patronizing Italian bars in city centres, customers may notice a price variance if seated outside versus standing at the bar or opting for takeaway. Outdoor seating typically incurs higher charges due to substantial taxes on establishments with outdoor seating. When ordering drinks or coffee, it is common to pay at the cash register and then present the receipt to the bar staff or barista for service. Tipping a euro or two is generally well received in such establishments.

To streamline service and avoid kitchen delays, it is advisable for large groups ordering pasta dishes to select the same type of pasta, such as spaghetti or penne. This is particularly important as fresh pasta is often prepared promptly, and a variety of pasta orders can hinder efficiency and cause frustration in the kitchen. This simple tip can enhance the dining experience for everyone involved.

Health & safety

While Italy is generally a safe destination for travelers, it is essential to remain vigilant, especially in tourist hotspots where pickpocketing can occur. Smarttraveller.gov offers up-to-date guidance on traveling to Italy, emphasizing the importance of closely monitoring your belongings to prevent theft.

Electrical supply

When traveling abroad, it is essential to be prepared with the necessary items for a smooth journey. In Italy specifically, electrical outlets feature two round pins, requiring visitors to have the correct adaptor to charge their devices effectively. Prior to embarking on your trip, ensure you acquire the appropriate adaptor to avoid any inconvenience during your travels.

Heritage, culture, history of Italy, seniors small group – Short Tour

One of my most pleasurable holidays, and one I must repeat, as it was not long enough. We were most fortunate in having our marvellous tour leader.

It was a marvellous tour. I was privileged, as we all were, to see so many things of beauty, and so much history, in your very capable hands. Thank you for passing on some of your knowledge, and for your ready assistance. Thank you also for the photos and the list of guides; I'd been trying to remember the name of that rather good, but unusual fellow we met in Siena. No doubt because of his enthusiasm - and eccentricity - I remember Siena so well. (BH - Heritage Italy)

• Thank you so much for being a wonderful leader for the Heritage Italy tour. It was so interesting and has left me with lots of things to think about and follow up in my reading. I found I had an old book giving the history of Greek science, i.e. the thinking of the Greeks in the early BC time. An interesting addition to our visit to Paestum and Cumae. The whole experience was marvellous and I have to thank you again for your kindness and consideration and the generous amount of time you gave to us all. I really appreciated that. Countries Visited

Places visited, suggested duration.

Uncover the legends and immerse yourself in the history of Southern Italy. Spend a week in Sicily and a week on the mainland, hopping between three millennia of ruins, cultures, cities, and charms. Authentic local experiences mix with grand historical remains and plenty of coastlines, with just about every major European civilization having a role to play. Handcrafted for senior travelers who seek to both explore and experience, this is an in-depth tour full of fascinating details.

Customizable Itinerary

Palermo – touching down in sicily.

Check-in at your Palermo hotel and listen, as from the balcony comes the sounds of the city with traders calling, bells ringing, and a late-afternoon hum from street-side cafes. Take a short orientation walk, and your first impressions will continue to form as you see Byzantine mosaic, a Benedictine Abbey, local fishers, artisans, and nuns all walking past. This island has been invaded and taken over by a succession of civilizations, each of them creating a little piece of today’s Sicilian culture. Palermo is the crossroads where all of the influences collide, and the best way to experience this is to do nothing at all. Your guide will lead you to Piazza Bellini, and there you can sit back and watch how the island unfolds.

What's Included:

Palermo – Traditional Markets and Authentic Palermo Highlights

Yesterday evening was a calm introduction to this morning as you will take a walk through the tangled streets of Il Capo, Palermo’s outdoor market. Fishmongers shout above enormous swordfish, oranges and lemons tumble from their stores, and mountains of olives and grapes sit beside pungent cheeses. Join the locals by walking around very slowly, taking the time to nod hello, and really inspect the produce. Traditional markets are a highlight of Italy, and Palermo’s is one of the very best. You can taste and sample as you go and enjoy capers, zucchini, ricotta, pecorino, squid, octopus, and much more.

Stop for coffee on Piazza Praetoria nearby, a cappuccino before midday, espresso after, if you want to be local that is. Animal heads adorn Renaissance nudes in the piazza’s center for quite a bizarre sight to take in. Not far away, you will find Baroque design and a 15th-century palazzo, or palace. There is an Arab-Norman church and Palermo’s ultimate highlight, the Royal Mountain. A single glance at the golden mosaics and you will know that this is not an ordinary cathedral. Standing for 800 years, it is an ode to the collaboration between Arab and Christian artisans, and one of those sights where you take a thousand photos, and they all look good.

Erice – Ancient Greece and A Night Above the Sea

As with every day on this tour, your guides will minimize walking time and customize timing based on your energy and preferences. It was the best of Palermo yesterday, and now you can travel back into ancient Greece today. Stop in Segesta, where a Doric temple is a testimony to the Greek explorers of 2,800 years ago. Drive next to Erice, entering the cliffside town through a Carthaginian gate. Your hotel is almost half a mile above the sea, and the vistas are soothing, as are the local desserts. Erice is near where the Arabs landed, and they brought sugary deserts that would become Sicilian delicacies. One of them is gelato, and your guide will know exactly where you should go to try it.

Agrigento – More Greek History on Italy’s Boot

Segesta and Selinunte were great Greek rivals, and the latter won the war and was once home to 100,000 residents. The rapid development of the city was unlike anything the world had ever witnessed, and the ruins are amongst the finest in Europe. Selinunte is pretty much in the middle of nowhere, and that makes it even more special because there are not any hoards of tourists interrupting your experience. Take your time with the ancient Greek world, and then continue to Agrigento, stopping for a trattoria village lunch on route. Five temples are raised above the ground in Agrigento, and each has a story to tell. Surrounding them lays rugged rock and crumbling remains, a city in evocative ruin.

Enna – From the Valley of Temples to Roman Aerobics

If you tend to wake early on vacation, your guide can take you back into the Agrigento ruins this morning, and it is beautiful to watch the temples come out of the shadow. Even just having a coffee with an Agrigento view can be a memorable and moving experience. Leaving the ancient Greeks, you will drive 14 centuries forward to a Roman villa where Imperial reception rooms and lavish baths showcase a Diocletian style here. The mosaics are baffling, with ladies in bikinis performing aerobics and strange scenes from Greco-Roman mythology.

Spend the afternoon in Enna, perhaps the coziest of all the Sicilian villages you stay in. Join the locals at small cafes, where everybody seems to pass the time of day with a coffee, a chat, and perhaps a lottery ticket. They also serve up little snippets of food and small beers, as well as acting as a post office, Internet cafe, clubhouse, and more. These little places help keep the culture alive, creating meeting places for entire communities. They are old-fashioned, and you will likely be amongst the youngest present. You will indeed be warmly welcomed, in spite of any language barrier.

Siracusa – Mazy Streets, Mount Etna and More

Lush valleys of fruit and vines can be found beneath Mount Etna as the fertile slope creates a garden of organic produce. Driving to the east of the volcano, you can stop at a farmhouse and taste what is cultivated, including Sicilian wine. From here, venture next to Siracusa, a city with two different experiences as there is the archaeological park, with temples and ruins excavated from Etna’s ash. Then the narrow streets of old Siracusa, a nice place to walk slowly and feast on local tradition some more. Like Enna, Siracusa is compact and good for senior travelers, even those with limited mobility as you can see a lot without having to take too many steps.

Taormina – Greco-Roman Meets Arab and Catalan

Taormina epitomizes Sicily’s cultural contrasts as a Greco-Roman amphitheater is back-dropped by Etna’s perfect cone. The main palace is a mix of Norman, Arab and Catalan styles from the 15thcentury, and down at the harbor, you can feel the bustle of early 20th-century Sicily, while the fountains have borrowed from Florentine Renaissance and Roman Baroque. What a mix! And what a place to have a good guide alongside you who knows which way to turn and the stories behind it all. Taormina is your final destination in Sicily, and your hotel looks across the strait to the mainland.

Paestum – Untouched Ruins and Doric Tales

You will find so many strange places with strange stories, with so much to take in when you explore Southern Italy in depth. Take Paestum as an example, as the Doric Greek temples are majestic, exemplars of both time and place, as good as any anywhere, including Athens. For 2,000 years they were completely untouched. When the Romans deforested the hills the landscape turned to swamp, turning a thriving town into a malarial nightmare, followed by syphilitic pirates, and things got even messier, and this is just the start of the story. Today is relaxed, with just a short ferry journey to mainland Italy and then an afternoon in Paestum, with its cute little cafes and restaurants.

Pompeii – A Laid-Back Waterfront and Sleeping Besides Ancient Rome

Naples is misunderstood, just as Sicily often is. Relax on its waterfront, surrounded by faded grandeur, and watch its people walk by, all chic and suave in their southern style. Dependent on your energy level, you can set out on a walking tour of Naples, but even without much exploring, you will get a feel for what makes the city tick. Of course, you will eat pizza here, the real pizza from the place where pizza was invented. This should give you some energy to make the most of Pompeii, a vast archaeological site that is still being excavated after 200 years after being buried by Mount Vesuvius, and it is completely different from the other sites you will have seen so far. Elsewhere you will have encountered grand monuments, especially temples, but Pompeii provides an impression of an everyday Roman city, from the vernacular to the villas.

Pompeii – Exploring the Amalfi Coast and Sorrento

Amalfi and Sorrento are not always great overnight stops for senior travelers, as the hills and the steps can become a little too much. However, they are beautiful destinations, and your guide will customize a day tour to your preferences. Superb vistas can be enjoyed without having to walk, and village charms can be absorbed without continually getting lost on mazy stairs. Spend a day exploring this renowned peninsula and then return to Pompeii, where you can sleep beneath the splendor of the old Roman city.

Montecassino to Rome – Early Christianity and Imperial Legacy

The Montecassino story is more recent than most in Southern Italy, as this was where the Benedictine movement was founded, and the Abbey is a replica of the original. Unfortunately, that original, home of incredible art and ancient literature were bombed to destruction during World War II when it served as a Nazi base. As always, your guide will know all of the stories and will add context to the mosaics, columns, galleries, and chapels. From here, you will travel north to Rome. Prime hotel location is critical in the Eternal City, and you will have easy public transport access, but also be within the old urban core, so reaching restaurants and piazzas will not require a complicated journey.

Rome – Rome for Senior Travelers

Rome was built a long time before cars, and understandably, driving here is a nightmare. While it may not seem believable now, it is far easier to get around on public transport when exploring the central sights. Rome for senior travelers means hopping between Imperial legacies and Baroque art without getting clogged up in endless traffic queues. The Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain, a Borromini church, and the Pantheon are four stops that showcase the best of the Italian capital. It is likely that you will be tired after all four, and there is no better place to rest and reenergize than Piazza Navona, perhaps the grandest of all Italian squares.

Rome – After Hours at the Vatican Museums

Perhaps the grandest of all piazzas, St Peter’s Square is also on another level, and its atmosphere is entirely different. Most of today is left free before you visit the Vatican in the late afternoon, giving you time to admire all of the columns of Piazza San Marco as they twist around St Peter’s Basilica. You will enjoy an after-hours tour of the Vatican Museums for a chance to experience Michelangelo and other greats without the crowds. Wander past Roman sculptures and Flemish tapestries, and enter spellbinding chapels where every inch of the wall is painted. Stand beneath the Sistine Chapel ceiling and appreciate how the paint has blurred into the wall, the Renaissance fresco style still unrivaled in world art. End the day with a stop in Piazza St Pietro to indulge in one last Italian dinner.

Rome – Departure

There could be some time to see a little more of Rome this morning, although you might want to take it easy and rest up before the flight. You will be transferred to the airport and wave goodbye to your Roman guide, departing Italy with 3,000 years of memories.

Detailed Description

Southern Italy connects cultures as ancient Greek temples stand on windswept hills, Byzantine mosaics fill Norman churches, and Roman amphitheaters stand in the shadow of tumultuous volcanoes. Over 3,000 years play out across the landscapes in the form of archaeological ruins and traditional cities. It is not a place that is easy to understand, as so much has happened between Sicily and Rome, there are not enough encyclopedias to record it all. There is no clear-cut tale, and no single story to sum it all up, and that is why Southern Italy is so enticing. Southern Italy is a region that rewards the time you spend, a destination that encourages you to both explore and experience. You will want to go in-depth as you travel, and that is what this handcrafted tour is all about.

Created for senior travelers, this intimate tour covers the historical and cultural highlights of Southern Italy, spending a week on Sicily and a week on the mainland, including Rome. This is a tour designed for those who have visited Europe before and seek something beyond classic sights. Local historians lead the way, and it will be their knowledge that helps to fill in the gaps. Sites like Agrigento and Paestum are all the more enjoyable when you understand how and why they are there. Not that this tour is all archaeological remains, however, as Southern Italy is packed full of atmospheric towns and villages, so traveling back in time also includes experiencing local traditions as well.

Sicily is a surprisingly large island, and getting around on the mountainous roads is slow. Having a single base does not really work in this region, so to save travel hours, you will hop across the island, starting with two nights in Palermo before overnighting in Erice, Agrigento, Enna, Siracusa and Taormina. A one-way route minimizes time on the move, and the villages you stay in are perfect for senior travelers. Take a look around, and you will probably feel young, as these are villages where seniors continue with their traditions but youngsters migrate out to cities. You can dine in typical trattoria, informal yet delicious local restaurants, and spend languorous evenings in surreal little places.

Walking time and distance has been minimized throughout the tour. You can save your energy for the archaeological sites or a short stroll around the hotel, rather than traipsing across mountains and cities. Each day there will be somewhere to explore, and once on the mainland that means discovering Paestum, Naples, Pompeii, Amalfi, Sorrento and Montecassino. These neighboring destinations fill four days before you get three nights in Rome, a city of so much legend it likely does not require an introduction. You will experience the best of it, including an after hours tour of the Vatican Museums. Your two weeks will pass quickly, but there is a lot to take away, not just the sights and destinations, but all the local food and people as well. Looking for the best Italian travel experiences? Taking My Dad to Italy: 20 Tips for Seniors Traveling to Italy

I took my dad to Italy a few weeks ago.

If you knew the whole story,  you might say it was a bit of a miracle.

I’m the last person who should be surprised. For me, Italy and miracles go hand-in-hand.

So if you’re a senior not sure if you can make it to Italy or there’s a senior you love who you want to bring to our favorite country, gather round my friends because I didn’t name this business Dream of Italy for nuthin’! We’re in the business of making dreams come true…

best italy trip for seniors

If you’ve followed me for a long time, you might know that my most frequent travel companion to Italy was my mother. We probably took 20 or more trips together over more than 20 years, the last being when my parents joined me in my ancestral hometown Castelvetere sul Calore to film an episode for the PBS series. My mother had stage 4 cancer at the time. Everything about that trip was a miracle.

When my mother passed away last April, so much changed. Though still very functional, engaged and funny, my 81-year-old dad has some memory issues that mean he can’t live alone. He can walk very well, but not long distances. He and I (his only child) now live together. I’m a person who eats challenges for breakfast but managing his care and his life while trying to run two businesses and my life has been, uhm, daunting, to say the least. But we do what we have to do…

(I know so very many of you also find yourself facing the very difficult realities of eldercare. I have found this article T he Crisis of America’s Working Daughters to be spot on – no matter if you are a woman or a man.)

And man, I would get a lump in my throat thinking of all the trips to come to Italy without my mom. I returned once in the fall – and hired someone to stay with my dad – but thought, maybe I should bring my dad next time. I kept dismissing the idea…

And for that I can clearly hear my mom loudly scolding me … Sorry Ma! …because for my mother, the cup was always half full and there was always another adventure to be had no matter what the challenges!

Listen, we need to be realistic about limitations, but that can be very different from buying into a diagnosis or a story society tells us about a condition, or even aging itself. I bought into something that wasn’t quite true. The truth is my dad’s life is not over, just ever so changed. He’s still him. And he’s been truly yearning for connection and adventure as I think there’s nothing lonelier than losing a spouse and losing some cognitive ability at the same time. And the communities those who are married have don’t always show up when half of the couple is gone.

Sometimes, it takes a relative stranger to shake things up.

best italy trip for seniors

I met Becky Munson (right in the photo) in October  cocktail party we filmed at Bramasole , the home of Frances and Ed Mayes, for the Dream of Italy: Tuscan Sun Special . She runs trips to Cortona through her company Live Tuscan . We reconnected a few months later in the U.S. and Back invited me and my dad to join her in Tuscany.

I kind of questioned her, like “I don’t know about my dad.” And she insisted he could do it.  For months…before she ever met him, “Bring him,” she kept saying. Just knowing.

And it was the among the best things I have ever done. Who am I to question the magic of Italy? My dad was reborn. I built a trip focused only on Tuscany, including some work filming Tuscan Sun Special promotions and tips for Create TV with Frances Mayes and taping some episodes for the new podcast ,  around spending time with Becky’s group in Cortona.

Want to see what fun he had? Check out this video of him dancing with Becky and the ladies in the group.

You know what gave my dad new life in Italy? The people! Everyone from our hosts Sal and the crew at the castle, Becky and Vittorio with Live Tuscan , David at La Corte dei Papi , Silvia at Il Falconiere to our fellow travelers to the Italians and expats we would meet in the piazza or at a vineyard, engaged with my dad and welcomed him with open arms. Italy celebrates older people more than America does, that’s for sure.

While I’m a risk taker and believe whatever is going to happen is going to happen and that its better that we can say that we truly lived, I didn’t decide on the trip based on fantasy alone. I asked two of his doctors if they thought he could do it and they both said, go for it. I also know that I have the distinct advantage of knowing the country well and having friends and colleagues close by if anything went wrong.

Italy proved to me my dad is still in the game and he’s still in the game because of this Italy trip. When are we going back?

Here are some things I recommend to make traveling to Italy with a senior or as a senior easier.

  • Assess your comfort with risk and/or realize that life at home is full of risks too . In 2004, my father had his first heart valve replacement – performed by the Dr. Oz, no less. A few days before surgery as his heart was failing, my mom found my dad (not a macho guy, but still a guy) doing vigorous work fixing their deck.  “What are you doing?” she screamed  “I’m going with my boots on – like a cowboy,” he replied. Maybe that says something about my family’s attitude about really living even if there’s a risk.
  • Consider buying refundable airplane tickets. Becky invited us about six months before the actual trip so I didn’t know what my dad’s health would be at the time of the trip. Our plane tickets were going to be a huge expense. I’ve flown Norwegian – non-stop Newark to Rome – several times in both coach and Premium and I love that they have a Flex option which makes fares completely refundable until 24 hours before departure. The pricing isn’t that much higher than their regular tickets. Traditional airlines like United, Delta, etc. do offer refundable fares but they are very high. You can also rely on travel insurance if you need to cancel.
  • Splurge for roomier airplane seats and try for non-stop flights. I guessed the most challenging part of the trip for my dad would be all the flying so I didn’t want to stuff my dad in coach, but we can’t afford Business Class so that’s what made Norwegian PremiumFlex very attractive. The Premium seats aren’t lie-down but they are almost as roomy as Business on other airlines. The configuration is 2-3-2. So plenty more room. The cost was $1900 round trip for each of us. Our particular Premium seats (maybe because I went through a travel agent who worked his magic) also came with lounge access in the U.S. and in Rome.
  • Get compression socks and get up while flying! My dad is a good sport. I bought us both compression socks to help with the risk of blood clots. I’m the only one who wore them on the way back. I also nudged him to get up and walk around a few times. Good advice for all of us at any age.
  • Buy a Medjet policy to ensure if you or your loved one is hospitalized while traveling, you will be transported home. What was the most difficult thing that might happen on the trip? Well, what if my dad ended up in the hospital? Did you know that most travel insurance policies and credit card policies will only get you to the nearest acceptable medical facility, not all the way home? Crazy! And when I learned that a few years ago, I bought an annual Medjet membership . If you’re 150 miles or more from home, and hospitalized, Medjet will get you home to the hospital of your choice. It isn’t something you buy each trip, you just join annually.  Literally, the second thing I did after buying the plane tickets was call Medjet to see if I could get my dad a membership, even at his age. I’m a little obsessed with Medjet. I think it is the best idea in travel. Fortunately, Medjet has a Diamond Policy for ages 75 to 84. We just had to fill out a questionnaire and have his doctor sign it and my dad was covered. Big load off my shoulders!
  • Buy travel insurance and get a policy that covers pre-exisiting conditions. I feel most comfortable having a Medjet policy AND buying an individual trip policy. I’ve learned it can get tricky if you have to make a claim based on what a travel insurance company considers a pre-existing condition. A friend suggested calling Insuremytrip.com and they located two companies that offer policies for pre-existing policies in my state. Yes, the policies are more expensive but since most of my trip was refundable I didn’t have much trip costs to cover and paid less than $300 to cover both of us. With the average trip cost, such a policy might cost $400-500 a person but it is worth it.
  • Err on the side of getting wheelchair service at the airport. Unless your senior is very physically fit, opting for wheelchair can save on physical strain and isn’t flying tolling enough. New York’s JFK for instance is one of those gargantuan airports that requires a lot of walking, but Italy isn’t better.  Did you know that the distance from check-in to the gate at Rome’s Fiumicino Airport is 1.25 miles? And the day we left, it was hot and the AC wasn’t working very well.
  • And if you are wheelchair bound all the time, don’t let that stop you! Italy is becoming more accessible and we’ve been written about options for custom travel and tours.  Some regular tour companies like Perillo Tours welcome those using a scooter or collapsible wheelchair as they bring a companion to assist. Or try our travel service to match you with a company that plans accessible travel.
  • Bring extra medicine; don’t put it in checked luggage. I knew we could lose anything but his meds. He takes a heart medication that keeps him alive. I kept it close and brought an extra 10 days worth. I kept thinking of 9/11 and planes not flying for days. Better to be safe than sorry.
  • Avoid the stairs or just exercise some caution. We stayed in three places on the trip. The first had an elevator but the last two had a flight of stairs to the room. Actually we made a choice when looking at the rooms to stay in the rooms with the stairs. My dad is agile but you never know about that combination of wine and jet lag! He did fine but it can be a consideration. Also, think about internal steps in the room. One room had a step between the bedroom and the bathroom. Concerned my dad might fall in the middle of the night, I put a chair blocking it. I knew if he got up and tried to move it, I would wake up and help him. Also I left the bathroom light on!
  • Don’t plan very much for your first full day. We spent the first few days with our friends at Castello delle Serre (I’ve written about them before and they are now offering 10% off to my followers with code: dreamofitaly ) and I thought sitting at that stunning castle pool most of the day would be a great way to recover from the flight. And then we simply took a two-hour drive around the Val d’Orcia during the golden hour before sunset – the simple pleasures!
  • Follow the rhythm of the Italian day and rest in the afternoon. Funny, this is the advice my friend Rosanne gives in our traveling with kids podcast episode — but it applies to everyone, I think. My dad was great in keeping up with my ambitious schedule. I’ve never seen him take a proper nap in my life. He’s just not a napper. But I would get him a Coca-Cola and some snacks in the afternoon and he would sit on the lounge chair and close his eyes for a bit. To prepare for the dinner round of more eating and drinking!
  • Renting a car can have its advantages. I purposely kept our trip limited to the Tuscan countryside. With a car, it was easy to get my dad close enough to things so he didn’t have to walk a long distances. I really like the flexibility of having a car. (I always use Auto Europe and they offer 5% off to my followers with code: 72002261) For instance when we would drive up the hill to the main area Cortona while staying at the nearby countryside locations with Live Tuscan and at La Corte dei Papi (save 10% with code: dreamofitaly), I would drop my dad off at Piazza Garibaldi , tell him to wait, park the car further away and walk back to get him and walk into town.
  • You can also consider a car and driver. This is the one trip cost that has really gone up in cost in recent years. It used to be that hiring a car and driver was a bargain. But you can still make it work. Say you’re staying in Florence and want the countryside experience without taking a train, hire a car and driver for a day and you can cover a lot of ground – a few vineyards, an abbey and a great place for lunch. My dad and I didn’t do the group walking tours with Live Tuscan in Assisi and Siena because of the steep hills but private car and driver would have made that more possible.
  • But even in the cities, there are innovative ways to get around easily. Again, a tip from friends with kids works well for seniors. My friend took her kids to Rome and they explored the city via golf cart through Rolling Rome . There are now several choices for e-car tours of Florence; I recently heard about Eco Tours Italia . Venice of course can be easy by vaporetto or water taxi.
  • Hang out in the piazza! Even if he can’t speak the language (he actually knows about 10 words – that helps), my dad had a ball people watching both the Italians and tourists alike. I swear I could have sat him in the piazza half of every day and he would have been a happy guy and I think most of us would, no matter what our age! That’s of course the advice of my friend Frances Mayes in her new book, See You in the Piazza !
  • I’m supposed to tell you not to try to do too much…the advice might actually be, keep things flexible. I don’t always practice what I preach. I keep a fast pace when I travel to Italy and for the most part, my amazing dad kept up. Or if I was busy doing an interview or touring a property, he would happily sit with his book in the shade. But about five or six days into it, I knew we both needed to rest, so I told Becky we wouldn’t be joining to group for a truffle hunt (I know, I know my favorite but my dad would have had a long walk on uncertain terrain) and we just sat by the pool for hours and enjoyed some lunch and reading. It replenished our reserves for the rest of the trip.
  • I love the idea of renting a villa with your senior or seniors. A villa vacation is great for multi-generational trips. Part of the group can tour and some can stay and just enjoy the villa. You can have a chef come in to teach a cooking lesson. If mobility is an issue, you can have your dinners at “home” at the villa.
  • Consider a cruise. You can cover a lot of ground and the organized shore excursions can often cut down on the amount of walking and logistical challenges. I recently wrote an article for Cruise Critic about going deeper cruising Italy. I’ve considered a cruise as the next trip for my dad.
  • Bring a great attitude. This was hands down the secret sauce of our trip. My dad is super positive and game for anything. He’s easy going and knew we would have magic!

This list of tips just scratches the surface. I’d love to know about your tips and thoughts. You can leave a comment below or email me and I might use your tip in a future article.

Keep reading for the complete list of slow-paced tours perfect for seniors.

From captivating cultural encounters to picturesque landscapes that soothe the soul, these trips are thoughtfully designed to cater to the needs and desires of a variety of travelers.

Let’s delve into the transformative power of unhurried travel, where the emphasis lies not on ticking off landmarks on a checklist but on relishing each intricate moment of life. Slow-paced tours can rekindle the sense of wonder, create lasting memories, and open doors to unforeseen adventures for seniors seeking a new chapter in their travel story.

Why Choose a Slow-Paced Tour

While fast-paced travel might suit some, unhurried trips offer a host of unique advantages that make them an increasingly popular choice among those that enjoy stopping and smelling the roses.

Appreciate the Journey

Slow-paced tours encourage you to savor the experience fully. Rather than rushing from one attraction to another, you have the time to absorb the culture, history, and beauty of each destination. This unhurried approach allows you to develop a deeper connection with the places you visit, fostering a profound sense of appreciation for the voyage itself.

Enjoy Relaxed Itineraries

Slow-paced tours are thoughtfully designed with leisurely itineraries that prioritize comfort and enjoyment over rushed sightseeing. Ample free time allows you to explore destinations at your own pace, take breaks when needed, and even indulge in spontaneous moments of discovery.

Embrace Accessibility and Inclusivity

These tours often consider the accessibility needs of seniors, ensuring that the destinations and activities are senior-friendly. They take into account mobility concerns and offer accommodations that cater to varying physical abilities, making the trip more enjoyable for all participants.

Forge Meaningful Connections

With a more relaxed pace, you have the chance to interact with locals and fellow travelers in a more meaningful way. The unhurried environment fosters camaraderie and allows for deeper conversations, creating opportunities for friendships and lasting memories.

Experience Authentic Culture

Slow-paced tours often veer away from the crowded tourist traps, providing a chance to experience the authentic culture of a place. You can indulge in local cuisines, witness traditional customs, and partake in unique activities that might not be possible on fast-paced tours.

Reduce Stress and Fatigue

Traveling at a slower pace can significantly reduce the stress and fatigue commonly associated with rushed trips. This approach is especially beneficial as it allows you to maintain your energy levels and enjoy the experience to the fullest.

Immerse in Nature’s Beauty

These tours often include visits to serene natural landscapes, where you can bask in the tranquility of breathtaking scenery. Whether it’s a scenic countryside, a peaceful coastal town, or a majestic mountain range, slow-paced tours provide ample time to appreciate the beauty of nature.

Accommodate Special Interests

Slow-paced tours can be tailored to cater to specific interests, such as art, history, wildlife, or wellness. You can choose tours that align with your passions.

Finding the Right Balance

Margaret Manning, the founder of Sixty & Me and an avid traveler, reflects on the differences between slow-paced and fast-paced traveling.

Years ago, I had the opportunity to join Road Scholar on a trip to Prague. On this adventure, I learned just how fun group travel can be. Every day had a theme, which I loved. At the same time, the formal activities weren’t overwhelming. I had time to walk alone. I discovered secret parks. I wandered through tiny shops and expansive gardens. And, of course, I made plenty of new friends.

Shortly after my Road Scholar trip, I completed a one-month train journey around Northern Europe. This second trip was much more fast-paced. In 10 days, I traveled 6,000 kilometers and visited 12 cities. I traveled by train, car, boat, and bike. I stayed in a new hotel every 2 days. It was an amazing experience… if a little tiring.

My goal on both of these trips was to inspire the women in our community to step out of their comfort zones and consider alternative travel options.

One of the questions that I asked myself over and over again, as I worked my way around Europe, was whether I was pushing too hard. Was I trying to see too much? Would it have been better if I had taken it easy and “stopped to smell the roses” more often?

Obviously, there is no “right” or “wrong” answer to this question. Both approaches have their advantages and disadvantages.

On the one hand, like many women over 60, I feel a great deal of pressure to see as much as I can in the time that I have left. On the other hand, if I am honest, sprinting from place to place is harder on my body and mind than it used to be.

Does Road Scholar Offer the Best Blend of Fast and Slow-Paced Travel?

The more I thought about it, the more I realized that Road Scholar is actually an amazing blend of fast and slow-paced travel. On the one hand, all of their programs offer intellectually stimulating activities. They keep your mind buzzing (sometimes spinning) with new ideas.

On the other hand, they don’t force you to go beyond a comfortable pace. If you want to take part in the optional activities, you can. If you want to use your free time to sit at a local café and watch the people passing by, this is also completely fine.

Perhaps this was the main lesson that I learned on my most recent trips.

There is no “right” or “wrong” way to travel. There is no “too fast” or “too slow. There is only the pace that we need at a certain time in our lives.

Sometimes we need intensity. Other times, we need intimacy. The trick is to take the time to evaluate where we are in our lives and to choose our travel adventures consciously.

I just returned from a two week group travel tour of Ireland and Scotland. Although it was wonderful, I found the fast pace and constantly being on the go stressful and tiring. I am a 70 yo female in good health and fit! Plus, I caught Covid for the first time ever and although fairly mild, it still took its toll and I spent the majority of the trip wearing a mask. As a result of my experience, I had decided over the course of the trip that any future trips I take will be slower paced and immersive. This article is spot on!

Sandra Roussy

Hi Gmarie, I’m so sorry Covid put a damper on your trip to Ireland and Scotland. Slow paced tours are definitely an excellent way to discover new places without feeling rushed and pressured. They are great for getting an authentic feel of a destination and especially for getting an immersive experience. Keep us posted on your future travels!

Highlights of Italy

Allow at least 10 days Distance: 930km (577 miles)

From the haunting canals of Venice to Napoli backstreets, this classic tour provides a whistle-stop introduction to Italy's greatest hits . As you work your way down the boot you'll encounter Roman ruins, Renaissance masterpieces, baroque piazzas and mouth-watering regional cuisines in spades.

Venice: 2 days

With its achingly photogenic canals, stunning palazzi (mansions) and slender black gondolas, Venice gets you in the mood. If must-see Piazza San Marco , with its mosaic-encrusted basilica , and Palazzo Ducale are too crowded, seek out exceptional art in Fondazione Querini Stampalia and Peggy Guggenheim Collection . Scour seafood stalls at Rialto Market , bar-hop along Fondamenta dei Ormesini and snack on cicchetti (Venetian tapas).

Next stop:   Take a train from Venice to Bologna (1.5 to 2 hours).

Bologna: 1 day

Italy's culinary capital and home to Europe's oldest university, Bologna has a gloriously preserved medieval core. Some 20 towers loom over the red-brick centro , whose streets are lined with porticoes and crammed with delis, bars and trattorias. Check out the colossal Basilica di San Petronio, admire art in the Pinacoteca Nazionale , and chow down in the busy Quadrilatero district.

Next stop:  Take a train from Bologna to Florence (40 mins).

Florence: 2 days

Two days is not long in Florence , Italy's peerless Renaissance city, but it's enough for a breathless introduction to its signature sights : the Duomo , with its famous red-tiled dome; the Galleria degli Uffizi , home to one of the world's greatest art collections; and, of course, Michelangelo's muscular David in the Galleria dell'Accademia .

Next stop:  Take a train from Florence to Pisa (1 hour).

Pisa: 1 day

Head west to Pisa to see if the Leaning Tower really does lean (spoiler: it does, a lot). The Torre Pendente is the star of a trio of medieval sights on Piazza dei Miracoli , an elegant grassy square 2km (1.2 miles) north of the train station. Alongside the Torre, you can applaud Pisa's pristine 12th-century Duomo and the stubby, cupcake-like Battistero . Squeeze in a walk along the city walls .

Next stop:  Take a train from Pisa to Rome (3 hours).

Rome: 3 days

The Eternal City where all roads lead, Rome has more than enough to keep you occupied for a lifetime . In three days you’ll be able to visit headline sights like the Colosseum , Pantheon and Vatican Museums (home of the Sistine Chapel), while also having time to lap up the colorful street life around Campo de' Fiori and explore the atmospheric Trastevere neighborhood.

Next stop:  Take a train from Rome to Naples (1.25 hours on the fast train, 2.5 hours on the regular line).

Naples: 1 day

With Mt Vesuvius brooding on the horizon, Naples is fiery, fun and endlessly addictive. Where else can you pair electric street art with priceless finds from Pompeii in the ancient-treasure filled Museo Archeologico Nazionale ? Gorge on the world's best pizza in any number of popular pizzerias. End the day on an operatic high with a performance at Teatro San Carlo .

Left: A historic cathedral with an ornate facade; centre: bridge over a river; right: a domed church

Northern grandeur

Allow at least 6 days Distance: 395km (245 miles)

Cut a swathe across northern Italy, taking in aristocratic villas and Renaissance frescoes, contemplating Shakespearian drama and sipping cult wines along the way. From Milan the road winds east, passing through a string of historic towns en route to Padua near the Venetian Lagoon and Adriatic Coast.

Milan: 1 day

Start in style in Milan , Italy's fashion and finance capital. Marvel at the architectural excess of the Duomo and Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper before perusing contemporary art in a former 1910 distillery and browsing designer styles in the boutiques of the Quadrilatero d'Oro . Dine on risotto alla milanese (saffron and bone marrow risotto) and toast the road ahead with a canal-side aperitivo (pre-dinner drink) in the Navigli area.

Next stop: Drive 2.5 hours from Milan to Mantua.

Mantua: 1 day

Embrace Mantua , a prosperous Lombard town renowned for its Renaissance architecture and aristocratic palaces. Chief among these is Palazzo Ducale , the vast residence of the Gonzaga family that ruled the city for centuries. Contemplate the Palazzo’s dazzling frescoes and compare them with the playful images that adorn Palazzo Te , a second Gonzaga palace that was often used for love trysts.

Next stop: Drive 1 hour from Mantua to Sirmione.

Sirmione: 1 day

Soak up lake life in Sirmione , on the southern tip of handsome Lake Garda . Walk beneath the crenelated walls of 13th-century Rocca Scaligera and lunch on a vine-covered restaurant terrace. Explore the impressive Roman ruins of Grotte di Catullo , then flop lakeside at Aquaria Thermal SPA .

Detour: Stride out on walking trails around the mountaintop ruins of Rocca di Manerba (2–5 hours).

Nex stop: Drive 45 minutes from Sirmione to Verona.

Verona: 1 day

Dedicate the next day to Verona , the setting for Shakespeare's romantic tragedy Romeo and Juliet . Admire archaeological and art treasures in the Museo di Castelvecchio and go to the city’s Roman Arena – if you're visiting in summer, catch an opera performance here. Modern art awaits in the Galleria d’Arte Moderna Achille Forti .

Next stop: Drive 50 minutes from Verona to Vicenza.

Vicenza: 1 day

Take to the streets of Vicenza to inspect the trail-blazing designs of 16th-century architect Andrea Palladio. His tour de force is La Rotonda , a villa on a hill overlooking the city, but you can also marvel at his work at the Teatro Olimpico and Basilica Palladiana . For a different style, the baroque Palazzo Leoni Montanari has a wonderful collection of Italian art and Russian icons.

Next stop: Drive 45 minutes from Vicenza to Padua.

Padua: 1 day

Amble around Padua , a rich, dynamic university city. Its star turn, for which you’ll need to book ahead, is the Cappella degli Scrovegni , a northern Sistine Chapel showcasing a celebrated cycle of frescoes by Giotto. Afterwards, you can bone up on the city’s prestigious medical history at Musme and join the pilgrims at the Basilica di Sant’Antonio .

Left: a rural scene of Chianti vineyards; middle: a tall striped bell tower; right: a medieval town square

A taste of Central Italy

Allow at least 7 days  Distance: 243km (150 miles)

Rolling hills crowned by medieval towns, verdant vineyards of the Chianti area and Italy’s fourth-largest lake await. Immerse yourself in classic Renaissance scenery on this tour that meanders through southern Tuscany and neighboring Umbria.

Whet your appetite for the road ahead with a couple of days in Florence. Take in the Renaissance masterpieces of the Galleria degli Uffizi and the architectural splendors of the Duomo. Spend some time checking out the street life around Piazza della Signoria and go face to face with Michelangelo’s David .

Next stop : Drive 45 minutes from Florence to Chianti.

Chianti: 1 day

Dedicate day three to pottering about the vineyards and wine estates of Chianti . Stop off for a tasting at Greve in Chianti, the main town in the Chianti Fiorentino (the northernmost of the two Chianti districts), before lunching on prime steak in Panzano in Chianti and admiring contemporary art at the Castello di Ama .

Next stop: Drive 1 hour from Chianti to Siena.

Siena: 1 day

With its medieval palazzi and lordly Gothic architecture, Siena is a sight to compare with any in Tuscany. To admire it from above, climb the Torre del Mangia , the slender tower that soars over Palazzo Pubblico and the sloping Piazza del Campo . A short walk away, Siena’s 13th-century Duomo is one of Italy’s greatest Gothic churches.

Next stop: Drive 1 hour from Siena to Lago Trasimeno.

Lago Trasimeno: 1 day

After four days on the road, take a mid-trip time out at Lago Trasimeno . The placid waters of Italy's fourth-largest lake are a soothing sight, especially if enjoyed from the medieval turrets of Castiglione del Lago, one of several laid-back towns draped along its shorelines.

Next stop: Drive 45 minutes from Lago Trasimeno to Perugia.

Perugia: 1 day

The next stop is Perugia, Umbria's regional capital and a lively student city. It's quite a climb to the hilltop center but worth the effort as the Gothic cityscape unfurls before you. Stroll Corso Vannucci and peruse the masterpieces of the Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria before adjourning to Piazza IV Novembre and the Cattedrale di San Lorenzo .

Next stop : Drive 30 minutes from Perugia to Assisi.

Assisi: 1 day

To finish off, make the pilgrimage to Assisi . This small cobbled town, a major day-trip destination, is centered on the Basilica di San Francesco , a mighty church complex whose upper church shelters a celebrated fresco cycle by Giotto. Down below, the frescoed, dimly lit lower basilica leads through to St Francis’ tomb .

Left: a sea arch; middle: ancient frescoes and a tiled floor; right: view of a seaside city with a small beach

The south coast

Allow at least 7 days Distance: 110km (68 miles)

From the tumult of Naples to the dreamy seascapes of the Amalfi Coast , this "best-of" summer tour offers world-famous ancient ruins and classical art accompanied by boat rides, island charm and breathtaking coastal scenery.

Naples: 2 days

Kick-off with a blast of urban energy in Naples . Feast your eyes on Pompeiian mosaics and stunning classical sculpture at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale , stop by to see the astonishing Cristo velato  (veiled Christ) statue at the Cappella Sansevero , and tuck into to-die-for pizza in Spaccanapoli, the heart of the city’s historic center.

Detour: Hit the road west on a road trip to uncover the Italian mainland's first Greek settlement and one of the world’s most dangerous supervolcanoes in the Campi Flegrei (factor in an extra day).

Next stop: Take a train from Naples to Pompeii (35 minutes).

Pompeii: 1 day

Catch the Circumvesuviana train and head round the bay to Pompeii . Italy's most complete archaeological site is a unique place showcasing the remains of an entire ancient city caught in its death throes. Walk the city streets and see the world’s first "Beware of the Dog" sign as Mt Vesuvius looms menacingly on the horizon.

Next stop: Take a train from Pompeii to Sorrento (30 minutes).

Sorrento: 1 day

Continue down the coast to the sunny seaside town of Sorrento . There are few sights here; rather, the fun is hanging out on the colorful streets, admiring the bay views and browsing the stores selling ceramics and ornate marquetry. Knocking back a shot of locally made limoncello , a liqueur made from plump Sorrento lemons, is non-negotiable.

Next stop: Take a boat from Sorrento to Capri (25 minutes).

Capri: 1 day

Capri , the most famous of the islands in the Gulf of Naples. Here you can gasp at the otherworldly blue light of the Grotta Azzurra (Blue Grotto) and poke around ancient ruins at Villa Jovis . For magnificent seascapes, take the chairlift from Anacapri to the summit of Monte Solaro, the island's highest point.

Next stop: Take a boat from Capri to Positano (30 minutes).

Positano: 1 day

The best way to get to Positano , the Amalfi Coast's most Instagrammable and expensive town, is by sea. As you approach it, you'll see its steeply stacked houses cascade down the hillside in a riot of peaches, pinks and terracottas. Once on dry land, hang out on the beach and stroll its vertiginous streets – a delight to walk at sunrise or sunset – fringed with voguish shop displays.

Next stop: Take a bus from Positano to Amalfi (40mins).

Amalfi: 1 day

The end of the road is Amalfi, the coast's de facto capital with its striking Cattedrale di Sant'Andrea , colorful ceramic shops and busy seafront. It's not a big place so you can take your time strolling around the sun-filled piazzas or taking a hike .

Detour: Head up to Ravello to check out its ravishing gardens and the best views on the coast (3 hours).

Left: An ancient amphitheater; middle: a view of church lit up at night; right: tourists admire ancient ruins

A slice of southeast Sicily

Allow at least 5 days Distance: 297km (185 miles)

Stretching from the black lava streets of Catania to the ancient Greek temples of Agrigento , this Sicilian tour showcases spectacular baroque beauty in the island's gourmet southeast. En route, pass through a string of honey-hued towns set amid citrus and olive groves shot with limestone cliffs and rocky canyons.

Catania: 1 day

Lorded over by Mt Etna, baroque Catania is an inspiring starting point. Soak up the town's distinct black-and-white 18th-century architecture over breakfast at Caffè Prestipino on Piazza del Duomo and take a theatrical mooch around fish market La Pescheria . Don't miss spectacular Chiesa di San Benedetto and the dizzying rooftop climb at Chiesa di San Giuliano on enchanting Via Crociferi.

Detour: Assuming the weather and volcanic activity is game, hike to Mt Etna's four crater summits with a guide (factor in an extra day).

Next stop : Drive 65 minutes from Catania to Syracuse.

Syracuse: 1 day

Birthplace of Archimedes (the mathematician of "Eureka" fame), Syracuse was considered the most beautiful city in the ancient world. Still today, it’s a legendary looker with a stunning central square, Piazza del Duomo , and a magnificent Duomo . Remnants of its earliest days, including a magically intact 5th-century BCE Greek theater, can be found at the Parco Archeologico della Neapolis .

Next stop: Drive 40 minutes from Syracuse to Noto.

Noto: Half day

Noto comes as the first of a trio of baroque towns whose beguiling looks result from rebuilds after an earthquake in 1693. Noto is the belle of the ball, boasting one of Sicily’s most striking streets, Corso Vittorio Emanuele, and an eye-catching basilica, Cattedrale di San Nicolò . This beautiful town positively glows in the early evening sunlight.

Next stop: Drive 45 minutes from Noto to Modica.

Modica: Half day

Stick with the baroque theme in Modica , a once-powerful medieval town now best known for its grainy artisan chocolate. Search out Duomo di San Giorgo in upper town Modica Alta. Join locals for an afternoon passeggiata (stroll) on Corso Umberto I; buy a cannolo oozing ricotta at Antica Dolceria Bonajuto and chocolate gelato to die for at Caffè Adamo .

Next stop: Drive 25 minutes from Modica to Ragusa.

Ragusa: 1 day

Fans of the Inspector Montalbano hit TV series might recognize some places in Ragusa . To find these, head to Ragusa Ibla (the historic center) where labyrinthine lanes weave past rock-grey palazzi to Piazza Duomo, a frequent shooting location. From the sloping, sun-drenched square, stairs lead up to the town's signature cathedral, the Duomo di San Giorgio.

Next stop: Drive 2.5 hours from Ragusa to Agrigento.

Agrigento: 1 day

Finish your tour on a high in Agrigento, home to a series of ancient Greek temples – the world's finest outside Greece. Pick of the bunch is the Tempio della Concordia , the headline act in the Valley of the Temples , Agrigento's sprawling archaeological park which encompasses the ruins of the ancient city of Akragas.

An older couple take a break from hiking to enjoy coffee on a Utah outlook overlooking a canyon. They are sitting on camp stools close to the edge. They are both holding coffee mugs and she is smiling at the camera.

One of the oldest and most respected names in group travel, Trafalgar Tours has logged more than 75 years in the travel business and offers a wide variety of destinations and travel styles: guided tours, river cruising, next-gen and family tours , luxury and customized private tours, and safari and adventure travel.

Trafalgar’s “Be My Guest” experiences allow you to visit and dine with local families in homes, farms, and restaurants. “Mini-stays” of three to five days appeal to the busy traveler or to those who want an “add-on” to a longer tour or stay. “At Leisure” trips have a relaxed pace, longer stays at each accommodation, and later starts in the mornings.

FAR AND WIDE: 10 Best Trafalgar Tours to Take in 2024

Because Trafalgar’s customer base is international, tour participants are likely to be English-speaking citizens of a variety of countries—a plus for North Americans who would enjoy traveling with people from all over the globe. A travel director accompanies each tour group and coordinates with local tour guides at each destination. Many of the travel directors have five years’ experience or more.

Trafalgar has a “Very Important Traveler” program that offers 5% savings on selected trips. For solo travelers, the cost of a single supplement depends on the trip. Optional experiences on each tour cost extra but also offer the flexibility to create your own custom tour: You may opt out of the activity and choose to do something else—or just relax.

Overseas Adventure Travel (OAT), part of the Grand Circle Corporation since 1978, focuses on active travelers over 50 who are looking for hands-on experiences in destinations around the world. The seniors-only company prides itself in taking travelers off the beaten track with immersive “Day in the Life” experiences such as shopping at local markets, visiting children at school, and taking part in home-hosted meals. OAT opts for accommodations that offer authentic local experiences—think smaller family-run hotels, paradores , and hotels close to city centers.

Both land and small-ship tours for seniors are available. Most trips last two weeks or more, with optional pre- and post-trip extensions, appealing to retirees and working people who have saved vacation time as well as travel funds. The physical requirements of each tour are described in detail, with an activity level rating system of one (easy) to five (strenuous). Each itinerary outlines the included meals and local tours; optional tours require an additional fee, but the itineraries also recommend many free or inexpensive options for your free time.

BRING THE GRANDCHILDREN:   8 Grandparent-Grandkid Vacations for Active Seniors

OAT has made itself a leader in solo travel: More than a quarter of its senior citizen clients are solo travelers, and of those, 85% are women. Roughly 92% of its single spaces are free of any singles surcharge, others are heavily discounted, and the company also offers a roommate matching program. In 2019, OAT began offering some women-only departures.

While not a cut-rate tour company, OAT works hard to provide senior tours at low per diems—giving you more for your travel dollar. The Travel Channel recognized it as a top provider for budget-conscious travelers, and the Grand Circle Foundation received a Global Vision award for leadership in tourism and philanthropy.

All of its senior-focused tours include guidance and lectures by Road Scholar faculty who are experts on topics relevant to the destination. Lodgings are always comfortable and “sometimes even iconic.”

Road Scholar programs include theme-based travel (such as arts, philosophy and religion, and nature studies), outdoor adventures, service learning trips, adventures afloat, intergenerational tours, and independent city discoveries. The “Choose Your Pace” feature allows you to choose among multiple options of tour length, challenge, and pace. Extended-stay programs range from eight days in Florence to 45 days in southern Spain.

TRIPS OF A LIFETIME:   12 Best Amtrak Vacations and Scenic Train Rides in North America

Activity levels for tours range from “easy-going” to “outdoor: challenging,” with the physical demands of each tour described in its itinerary. An “easy” tour might cover a week of Chautauqua lectures in New York, while a “challenging” tour might include hiking and kayaking in Alaska.

Nearly 25% of Road Scholars are traveling solo; the senior tour company offers some discounts on single rooms, provides supportive advice to women traveling solo, and emphasizes “learning in the company of a small group of individual friends, rather than traveling with a collection of couples.”  Road Scholar travelers tend to be curious and open to new ideas and cultures. The travel company recently added a virtual Adventures Online series of in-depth lectures for those who wish to supplement an in-person journey or simply learn from home.

Quick Facts about Senior Travel Tours with Road Scholar

  • Average group size: 13 to 24 people on “small group” tours; 12 or fewer on “micro group” tours; other group sizes vary by tour type and destination.

High-quality accommodations are included in the price and reflect the character of the local culture.

ADVENTURES FOR WOMEN: 9 Travel Companies That Specialize in Women’s-Only Tours

Smithsonian also provides special interest tours for older travelers, including study at Oxford, cave art exploration, and observation of the total solar eclipse in 2024. Its Cultural Stays allow travelers to “unpack once” and spend from one to three weeks exploring and learning in and around a single destination.

A branch of the 175-year-old Smithsonian Institution, Smithsonian Journeys has operated tours for more than 50 years. Its wide range of travel options appeals to many age groups, but the average age of travelers with this company is 55+. (The typical age range on active tours is 45 to 70; on special interest tours, it’s 55 to 80.) The company offers travel styles for a variety of fitness levels and interests, with an emphasis on freedom and flexibility that works especially well for seniors. It ranks among the best escorted tour companies for the 55+ age group because it recognizes that the one-size-fits-all mentality does not work for everyone, especially older travelers.

FOODIE VACATIONS:   9 Best Companies for Culinary Tours

Free time on every tour allows for “adventure a la carte.” A wide array of optional excursions and activities is offered on each itinerary: some are extra-cost activities provided by the company, while others are simply helpful suggestions for independent exploration. Globus provides tour directors and local guides from the region for every tour, as well as “skip the lines” access to sites, centrally located first-class hotels, opportunities to meet local families, and some “experiential dining” meals.

Globus tours come in many different formats. Globus Undiscovered tours take you off the beaten path where there are fewer crowds; this option is attractive to seasoned travelers who have already seen famous sights like the Tower of Pisa and the Mona Lisa. Escapes by Globus offers up to a 40% discount on tours taken between November and March. Choice Touring and Independence by Globus provide itineraries that allow you to choose excursions and have more “I-time” while the company provides lodging and the help of a tour director.

Intrepid has an age-inclusive philosophy (“18 to 70”) and aims to provide tours for all interests and comfort levels. Tour styles include “ Basix ” for the budget travel crowd and “ Comfort ,” which tends to attract older travelers. The travel tour company also offers retreats and tours for women, solo travelers, and the 18-29 age group. Note that while Intrepid tours are active, its tours are “not a constant endurance test.” A general level of health and fitness is adequate for its trips.

HIT THE TRAILS: 9 Best Tour Companies for Walking, Trekking, and Hiking Tours

Examples of Intrepid tours include a winter journey to Iceland to view the Aurora Borealis, a hiking-cycling trip in Sri Lanka, snorkeling in Bali, kayaking in Alaska, and enjoying the Naadam Festival in Mongolia or Day of the Dead in Mexico. 8. Viking River Cruises

People dining onboard a Viking River Cruise ship with beautiful water and forest in the background

Viking River Cruises specializes in European river touring, but it also offers small ship ocean cruises and expedition voyages. The company is more than 25 years old and is among the most awarded river cruise lines worldwide. Viking owns and operates its own ships; it also owns some dock locations.

SINGLE TRAVEL: 10 Best Tour Companies for Solo Travelers

Viking does not try to be all things to all people. There are no casinos on its river boats, for example, nor are children under 18 allowed. Viking also has a “no nickel and diming and no umbrella drinks” policy. However, you can expect outside rooms, onboard enrichment lectures, destination performances, onshore excursions in every port, introductions to local life and people, and an experienced staff. (In fact, 90% of the company’s river cruise staff returns each year.) Optional pre- and post-tour land extensions are offered.

With a philosophy that travel “should be a doorway to cultural insight and personal enrichment,” Viking could be regarded as a waterborne version of Road Scholar or Smithsonian Journeys. The company owns a learning channel (Viking TV) and provides recommended readings and other materials before you depart.

  • How to Book: Directly through Viking ; via CruiseCritic ; or through a travel agent such as AAA .

More Senior Travel Tour Company Options for Older Travelers

If you can’t see yourself in any of the senior tour styles I’ve mentioned above—or maybe you just want even more options—I have a few more recommendations.

1) Those who loved travel experiences in their student days and prefer an inexpensive tour may want to look at EF Go Ahead Tours .

2) Those who are physically fit and want active travel like cycling tours and walking tours with a mixed age group have many good options, including Backroads and Country Walkers , which can be a good fit for senior cycling and walking enthusiasts.

College graduates should check to see if their alumni association sponsors any tours: AHI , Odysseys Unlimited , and other companies work with these associations to provide excellent tours at good prices.

Finally, seniors planning a multigenerational family vacation or skip-gen trip with the grandkids should consider a company like Adventures by Disney , which is a hit with all ages.

1) Tourism for seniors in Italy –  FOLLOW OUR ADVICE

Shall we start our advice? The moment you start organizing your trip, remember these little tips that can make all the difference during your trip:

  • Visit only one country at a time and don’t overdo the number of things you are going to do each day.
  • Choose the itinerary of each day with peaceful walks , try to use the subway, taxi, etc. for the longest walks. Read also our section: Itineraries in Italy!
  • Choose the cities you want to visit well . Choose those places you’ve always dreamed of visiting and, occasionally, venture! Sometimes it’s interesting to do new things and change the routine a little bit, right?
  • If you buy tours in groups, choose tours with small groups , because otherwise it will be complicated to follow the rhythm of the group, and it will end up being a tour that you will not enjoy so much!
  • Preferably travel with one more person to share every moment of your trip , if it is not possible do not be afraid to travel alone!
  • When organizing your trip, remember to check if hotels have elevators, if they don’t, at least try to book the room on the first floor. Imagine carrying your bags up the stairs 🙁
  • If you are buying train tickets, remember to book the assistance service for your bags, O.K.? Read our section about train in Italy.
  • A very important and fundamental thing, health insurance! Don’t forget to buy great health insurance! It is money that is worth investing, nothing better than traveling with the certainty that for any eventual problem you will not have to spend a lot of money, but that you will mainly have all the assistance of the insurer.
  • And finally, choose the ideal station for your trip! Read also: What are the best period to visit Italy?

This Coastal Town Was Just Named the Best 'Hidden Gem' Vacation Destination in the U.S. for Retirees and Seniors

Looking for an under-the-radar destination that's perfect for seniors? Here's one Florida town that fits the bill.

Everyone loves a good hidden gem — including seniors. Now, medical supply website Carewell is here to help uncover the best "hidden gem" travel destinations for that age demographic, specifically.

In August, Carewell unveiled its list of the best-kept secret locations that "provide seniors with exceptional vacation conditions, affordability, and vibrant communities." To come to its conclusion, the team analyzed more than 160 cities across America with populations between 75,000 and 100,000. It judged each based on key factors, including lodging (analyzing the cost of the average daily rates for vacation rentals), dining and bars (based on average ratings on Yelp reviews), walkability, safety, and senior populations.

After looking at all the data, it named Palm Coast, Florida , the No. 1 hidden gem travel destination for seniors.

The Floridian town, located just south of Saint Augustine, "offers a beautiful coastal setting with plenty of sunshine and outdoor activities," the website explained. Here, it added, travelers can explore its gorgeous beaches and waterfront parks like Washington Oaks Gardens State Park or head out for a round of golf. (Consider booking a tee time at Palm Harbor Golf Club when you're ready.) You can also walk its numerous nature trails, including the Flagler County Cultural Council Turtle Trail to both work up a sweat and see some art along the way, or go out for a good time at the town's arts festivals.

Best of all, as Visit Florida noted, seniors are welcome to bring their four-legged friends, too, who can all visit its plethora of dog-friendly beaches like Bay Drive Park, Jungle Hut Park, and MalaCompra Park.

Coming in a close second is Clifton, New Jersey, which took high honors thanks to its "suburban comfort with easy access to urban amenities," including its quick proximity to New York City, its diverse dining, and its fantastic parks like the Garret Mountain Reservation .

And rounding out the top three is Evanston, Illinois. It took third place as it "blends the charm of a college town with cultural and recreational opportunities." Here, Carewell noted, visitors can "enjoy the scenic shores of Lake Michigan with beautiful beaches, parks, and walking paths perfect for leisurely strolls and picnics," spend time immersed in culture at the Evanston Art , and even find educational opportunities offered by Northwestern University, "including lectures, performances, and art exhibits that enrich the community — and your trip."

After spending 25 days in Italy, here are 10 things I recommend to every tourist who visits

  • My husband and I spent nearly a month exploring Italy .
  • We saw a variety of landmarks, from the canals of Venice to the ruins of Rome.
  • A few events, including a cooking class in Florence, stand out as the best things we did in Italy.

Insider Today

Last September, my husband and I kissed our pups goodbye, boarded a plane, and spent an unforgettable 25 days exploring Italy .

Though we loved the entire vacation , a few experiences stand out as the best things we did. Here are 10 things we recommend to any tourist visiting Italy.

We escaped the crowds of Venice by exploring nearby islands.

best italy trip for seniors

Venice is an absolutely beautiful city , but with all the other tourists, the tight streets and narrow canals can start to feel too crowded after a while.

So, my husband and I boarded a ferry to Lido, the barrier island separating Venice from the open sea.

Here, we rented bikes, rode along the beach for some stunning views of the Adriatic Sea, and boarded another ferry to Santa Maria del Mare.

Once we arrived, we biked to the fishing village of Pellestrina and sampled the freshest-tasting seafood I've ever eaten.

I highly recommend visiting the surrounding islands if you have the time to leave Venice's city center and want an authentic, less-touristy experience.

We hiked the Dolomites.

best italy trip for seniors

As an avid hiker, I knew I had to take a trip to the Dolomites.

We rented a car for this leg of the journey and saw stunning, bright-blue lakes and climbed the mighty northern Italian mountains.

The hike to Lago di Sorapis was the highlight for me, though I'd definitely say it's a tough climb (we saw a woman with a sprained ankle being helicoptered from the summit).

For beautiful lake views without the steps, I recommend checking out Lago di Braies, which is accessible by car.

The boat tour of Cinque Terre was amazing.

best italy trip for seniors

The five coastal towns of Cinque Terre are colorful and charming, but they're also tiny and can get pretty crowded.

We went on a small-group boat tour to avoid the tourists and see the Cinque Terre. It was admittedly one of the more expensive splurges of our trip, but we were out on the water and observing the towns for three hours.

Plus, the boat anchored in a few spots so we could get out, swim in the crystal-clear Ligurian Sea, and explore some caves.

The boat captain seemed knowledgeable about the area and answered all our questions — and for the last hour of the tour, he pulled out snacks and prosecco.

I won't ever forget Brunelleschi’s Dome in Florence.

best italy trip for seniors

We saw a lot of churches during our month in Italy, but none were as awe-inspiring as the Florence Cathedral (also known as the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore.)

When we went, it seemed that the best way to see inside and avoid the long line was to climb the dome itself.

But be warned: There were a lot of steps, and it was narrow inside.

Still, climbing the dome allowed us to see the interior frescoes up close and get the most enchanting city views.

My husband and I loved the cooking class we took in Florence.

best italy trip for seniors

While in Florence , we signed up for a Tuscan cooking class.

Our chef walked us through how to make different kinds of pasta from scratch and had us help him cook chicken cacciatore, salad, and homemade gelato.

Learning to cook was fun, but we also enjoyed the camaraderie with other tourists sharing their travel experiences.

We swapped stories and suggestions for the remainder of our trips and received recipes to try back home.

We biked the Appian Way in Rome.

best italy trip for seniors

Rome is full of unbelievable ruins, but observing them in a moment of solitude among the roar of traffic and flood of people can be hard.

To escape the hustle and bustle, my husband and I rented bikes and rode them far down Rome's oldest roads along the Appian Way.

Though the roads were initially full of people, the longer we rode our bikes, the fewer tourists we saw. I also recommend visiting the Catacombs of St. Callixtus and Villa di Massenzio.

Visiting smaller towns was a nice break from the tourists.

best italy trip for seniors

Rome , Florence, and Venice are Italy's heavy hitters, but I wanted to experience less-touristy Italian culture.

That's why my husband and I planned some day trips to smaller towns with fewer tourists: Siena, San Gimignano, Bracciano, and Orvieto.

My favorite memories in Italy were sitting at a café, sipping espresso or an Aperol spritz, and watching the day go by.

We visited Pompeii.

best italy trip for seniors

Nothing could have prepared me for the sheer size of Pompeii.

Exploring the archaeological site reminded me of how much damage the Mount Vesuvius eruption really did.

Though we spent five hours exploring the vast city, it felt like we barely scratched the surface.

I recommend getting an audio guide and going at your own pace.

The Path of the Gods was unforgettable.

best italy trip for seniors

For most travelers, the Amalfi Coast is the ultimate place to relax and unwind.

For me, it meant waking up at 6 a.m., going to a small town far off the beaten path, and hiking down the mountainside on the Path of the Gods .

It was one of the most beautiful hikes I've ever done, as I got sweeping views of the sea and the towns of Praiano and Positano.

We even met a flock of goats being shepherded by an adorable farm dog. Just be warned: The strenuous hike ends with roughly 1,700 unforgiving steps down to the city.

Relaxing on the island of Capri was a great way to end the trip.

best italy trip for seniors

The island of Capri is a major tourist spot during the Amalfi Coast's busy season. We beat the crowds by getting the first ferry out in the morning and returning on the last boat of the day.

Once we arrived, we went to the small town of Anacapri to ride the chairlift to Capri's highest point and see some magnificent views.

We also left time to hike down the Instagram-famous Via Krupp to a small beach, enjoy a few cocktails, and swim in the sea.

After nearly a month of intense traveling, I needed to lie on the beach in one of the most beautiful places on earth.

Best Senior Trip Destinations: Trip Ideas for Every Budget

A fter tons of hard work, your graduating senior deserves an epic grad trip to celebrate the end of one season and the beginning of another! In this post, I’ll share trip ideas for graduation that will guarantee an unforgettable experience for everyone.

As a mother of three and an avid world traveler, I have experienced it all when it comes to family travel. Now that my kids are getting older, I can use my expertise to help create the perfect graduation trip!

Below, I’ll share a list of the best senior trip ideas, from vibrant cities to exotic destinations and cultural experiences. If you want ideas for the perfect senior class trip we have some ideas you will love.

What Is a Graduation Trip?

Usually, a graduation trip is the last chance for a senior to celebrate their hard work and achievements before starting the next chapter of their lives.

Sometimes, a senior trip can be a vacation to a place on a travel bucket list, like swimming in the cenotes of Cancun. Or it might be a trip to a destination that will inspire young adults in their future endeavors, like touring the art museums of Italy and France.

Traditionally the class plans the trip together, including raising funds, budgeting for activities and lodging, and planning an itinerary. Lately, however, it seems that more parents are taking on the planning for this type of group travel. We know the perfect graduation trip can mean different things to different people. Depending on the situation, it could be a staycation, a relaxing beach vacation with just friends, or a family trip abroad.

The idea is to create lasting memories and have a fun, rewarding experience after years of studying and exams!

When Should You Go on a Senior Trip?

The best time to go on a senior trip is after high school graduation, usually in early summer, around May or June. This timing lets everyone celebrate finishing school and enjoy warm weather.

If possible we recommend traveling during the low season for better pricing and fewer crowds. This could mean late summer, around August. Just be sure to avoid hurricane season if you’re considering destinations like the Caribbean or the Gulf of Mexico, which typically runs from June to November. Choosing these times can also save money and have a more relaxing trip away from the crowds.

What if Your Senior is a Minor?

One of the most important aspects to consider when dreaming up graduation vacation destinations for your seniors is the age of the kids traveling. They might have their heart set on a seniors-only trip, but if any students are under 18, it might be best to stay local. Otherwise, you will need to bring along at least one legal guardian or responsible adult who is over 21 years old.

Many destinations in the US have limitations on travelers who are under 18. This includes booking hotels or vacation rentals, rideshares, and even certain activities. Make sure to read through all terms and conditions before booking.

Minors who are US citizens traveling internationally  will need to check   with the specific rules of the country they’re entering. Usually, they will need at least a notarized letter from their legal guardian.

If you are traveling to a popular spring break spot, like Cabo or Miami, hotels and popular attractions most often require guests to be 21 years or older. Additionally, if your crew wants to book a cruise, your party will need to include a responsible adult over 21.

Amazing Trip Ideas for Graduation

Without further ado, here are my picks for the best destinations for senior class trips!

Senior Trip Ideas in the United States

I think Chicago is the perfect place for a grad trip. Everyone can use the city’s tourist-friendly public transportation, and there’s an array of things to do right in the heart of the city. Whether your teen is into arts, sports, or sightseeing, Chicago offers a memorable graduation celebration experience.

For theater kids, get inspired by the top-tier theater scene in Downtown Chicago! There are a variety of venues within walking distance, from Broadway shows to local productions and small sketch theaters.

Sports fans can celebrate their upcoming graduation by watching the Chicago Cubs play a home game at Wrigley Field. And of course, there are must-see local landmarks like Millennium Park, Navy Pier, and TILT 360 CHICAGO !

New York City

NYC is a bucket list visit for many, making it one of the best trip ideas for graduation. There are so many opportunities to relax and have fun as a tourist in the Big Apple.

Explore the bright lights of Times Square, take a ferry to see the iconic Statue of Liberty, enjoy world-class Broadway shows, or stroll through Central Park. You also might also want to people-watch in Washington Square Park or Times Square or take a campus visit to NYU.

A big plus: the public transit system in NYC is one of the easiest to navigate. Just be prepared for hotels to be a bit pricier, but it’s part of the experience!

If you are traveling with a larger graduating class with a diverse range of interests head to the city of San Diego. We love this destination for its sheer variety of things to do!

This sunny southern California city offers beautiful beaches perfect for surfing and relaxing. Consider soaking up all the sunshine and outdoor fun by booking a hotel resort in Mission Bay and spending the days at Belmont Park, The San Diego Zoo , or SeaWorld San Diego .

For urban adventures, visit Balboa Park, with its gardens, museums, and stunning Spanish Village Art Center. Book a tour of The USS Midway Museum , set inside a historic aircraft carrier, or enjoy the nightlife of the historic Gaslamp Quarter.

Utah National Parks

Looking for an epic camping road trip? Consider a tour of the Mighty 5!

Utah is home to an impressive five national parks, reasonably christened the Mighty 5. They’re some of the most beautiful parks in the country , each offering their own unique experiences and landscapes! They include Zion, Bryce Canyon, Arches, Canyonlands, and Capitol Reef.

Imagine hiking trails among the stunning natural arches of Arches National Park or watching the sunset over the red rock formations in Zion National Park! With a variety of camping options, it’s easy to get close to nature and enjoy starry nights around the campfire with family and friends.

Reward the end of a high school career with a life-changing trip to the wilds of Alaska! This is a great destination for these seeking amazing tours and experiences.

This is where you want to go for glacier tours inside the United States! Plus, you won’t need a passport or special permission from a parent.

In Denali National Park, groups can go ziplining, hiking, or  rafting down the Nenana River , or go on a  Glacier & Wildlife Cruise of Kenai Fjords National Park .

Another unforgettable experience in Alaska is seeing the Northern Lights! A great time to plan a senior trip to enjoy this unique experience is in the winter through late spring.

If your travel group has considered a trip to Hawaii , I suggest either Waikiki in Oahu or the West Coast of the Big Island. Both locations are tourist-friendly destinations with various accommodations at every price point. Stay at a luxury resort or soak up the beachy vibes of a hostel!

Head to Waikiki to enjoy amazing shopping, white-sand beaches, great hiking, and cultural experiences like historical sites and luaus.

The Big Island boasts surf towns, farm tours, and a chance to see active volcanos up close. You can enjoy some of the most beautiful beaches in the world and snorkel among coral reefs full of tropical fish!

Senior Trip Ideas in Central/South America

Be aware that the legal drinking age in most of Central and South America is 18 years old! It’s important to consider this when booking a graduation trip and talk with your seniors about the importance of being responsible.

Cabo is awesome for graduating seniors because it’s all about fun in the sun! The beaches are perfect for chilling with friends, soaking up rays, and catching awesome waves if you like surfing. They can spend the entire time trying water sports like snorkeling, jet skiing, and parasailing.

Another fun adventure is to ride the dunes on ATV tours or  go ziplining through desert canyons . Plus, there are tons of beachfront clubs and restaurants where everyone can celebrate graduation by dancing the night away!

Puerto Rico

Visiting Puerto Rico for graduation is another fabulous idea! The country has some beautiful beaches, like Flamenco Beach in Culebra, that are perfect for sunbathing and snorkeling. El Yunque National Forest offers lush rainforests with hiking trails and stunning waterfalls.

For an amazing cultural experience, book a stay in San Juan. You could spend your entire trip here, eating delicious food and exploring historic sites like the colorful buildings of Old San Juan and the impressive El Morro fortress.

Note: Even though Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, the legal drinking age here is 18.

A Caribbean Cruise

Some of the most popular trip ideas for graduations are cruises to the Caribbean. It is necessary to include legal adults over 21 in the travel party, but it’s an opportunity to enjoy the ultimate vacation.

The best cruise lines for teens include all-inclusive experiences, onboard activities, and entertainment that’s not too cheesy but still fun. Many ships offer zip lines, rock climbing walls, gaming lounges, and water parks!

Interesting ports of call like Grand Cayman and the Bahamas offer guests a chance to shop, check out historical sites, visit the beach, and eat good food. I suggest considering Royal Caribbean, Carnival, or even UnCruise for something more unique.

If you want a true adventure, consider a graduation trip to Belize! Explore ancient Mayan ruins one day and the next you can snorkel the Belize Barrier Reef.

The laid-back vibe of beach towns like Caye Caulker or Ambergris Caye offers beach relaxation, local cuisine, and plenty of souvenir shopping.

Outdoor lovers should plan a senior trip to Costa Rica! The possibilities are endless. You can explore the lush rainforests and wildlife of Manuel Antonio National Park. Relax on the beautiful beaches of Playa Tamarindo or Playa Conchal.

Go zip-lining in Monteverde or white-water rafting on the Pacuare River. Be sure to plan a  full-day excursion through the Arenal Volcano region  with its hot springs and hiking trails. Or go surfing at Jaco Beach!

If you’re considering Ecuador, there are so many different experiences. There’s Baños, nestled in the Andean Highlands of central Ecuador. Here, thrill-seekers can enjoy activities like zip-lining, white-water rafting, and soaking in thermal hot springs. The town is surrounded by stunning waterfalls and lush greenery just begging to be explored.

Then there’s the Galapagos Islands, found in the Pacific Ocean, about 600 miles off the coast of mainland Ecuador. Come here for a unique experience with incredible animals, like giant tortoises, marine iguanas, and blue-footed boobies! It’s the perfect place for cycling, hiking, snorkeling, and diving. If your group is interested, be sure to book guided tours to learn about the islands’ unique ecosystem.

Senior Trip Ideas in Europe

For trip ideas for graduation with a blend of history, culture, and relaxation, I recommend Greece !

In Athens, you can explore iconic ancient sites like the Acropolis and Parthenon, learning about Greek mythology and history along the way. Wander through charming neighborhoods like Plaka for shopping and dining experiences.

In Crete, visit the Palace of Knossos for insights into Minoan civilization and enjoy beautiful beaches like Elafonissi and Balos for sunbathing and swimming.  Be sure to eat all the delicious Greek food you can, from souvlaki to moussaka!

Going to Italy? The hard part will be deciding which region to explore. Each one offers a distinct experience that will define a senior trip.

In Rome, spend your days touring ancient wonders like the Colosseum and Vatican City. We recommend a golf cart city tour for an amazing overview and a  street food tour where you will find some amazing local gems!

Florence is for the artists, with Renaissance masterpieces at the Uffizi Gallery and iconic landmarks like the Duomo and Ponte Vecchio.

One of the most remarkable places to visit with kids is Venice . Here you will find beautiful canals, grand palaces, and a vibrant cultural scene at places like St. Mark’s Square and the Rialto Bridge.

Scandinavia

The Nordic countries of Sweden, Denmark, and Norway promise a unique graduation trip filled with history, natural beauty, and amazing food.

In Sweden, you will want to explore Stockholm’s historic Old Town and visit the ABBA Museum for a musical journey! Denmark shines with Copenhagen’s colorful Nyhavn waterfront, Tivoli Gardens, and royal palaces. Norway offers adventure with breathtaking fjords and scenic cruises to see majestic mountains and waterfalls.

Make it a point while you’re here to try all the delicious Scandinavian cuisine, like Swedish meatballs, Danish pastries, and Norwegian seafood!

Artists, history-loving seniors, and adventure seekers alike, will love the south of France, especially Provence. Plan a  tour of Luberon, Gordes, and Roussillon , three of the most beautiful medieval villages in France. Book your trip during the summer and take pictures in full-bloom lavender fields! You can also explore Roman ruins in cities like Arles and Avignon.

Another idea is to plan your entire trip around Marseille on the Mediterranean Sea. From the historic Old Port to the breathtaking Calanques, Marseille offers a perfect combination of cultural exploration and coastal beauty.

A trip to both Kyoto and Tokyo is a great idea for the ultimate senior trip because both cities have a little bit of everything!

In Kyoto, explore ancient temples, zen gardens, and historic tea houses, learning about Japan’s traditional way of life. Tokyo, on the other hand, dazzles with its futuristic skyscrapers, trendy cafes, and world-class shopping. These major cities showcase the best of Japan, making them a good idea for seniors who want to experience the world.

Another must-visit destination in Japan with something for everyone is Osaka. You can visit Osaka Castle or explore the bustling Dotonbori district known for its neon lights and street food. The city also boasts top-notch shopping, great entertainment options, and theme parks like Universal Studios Japan.

Budget-Friendly Trip Ideas for Graduation

Graduating from high school is a significant milestone and celebrating it with a memorable trip doesn’t have to break the bank. There are plenty of budget-friendly trip ideas that offer incredible experiences without a hefty price tag.

Consider these options to make your graduation celebration both fun and affordable:

Take a Road Trip

Gather your friends, pack your bags, and hit the open road! Road trips allow for flexibility, so you can explore multiple destinations at your own pace. If you are traveling with multiple families you can split the cost of gas, accommodations, and food, so it’s an economical choice.

Whether you’re driving along the coast, through the countryside, or exploring a major city not too far from home, a road trip might be the start of a great adventure and bonding with friends.

Camping is another fantastic option for a graduation trip. With low costs for campsite fees and supplies, you can enjoy the great outdoors without spending a fortune.

Choose from nearby local state parks or a national park. Both offer beautiful landscapes, hiking trails, fishing, stargazing, and more. Or find out if your local beach or dude ranch has campsites!

Senior Day Trip

Whether it’s a week-long adventure or simply a day trip, the goal is to do something to celebrate with your student as well as their classmates and friends. You might be short on time, have a limited budget, or just can’t get everyone’s schedules to work for a longer trip. That’s okay! A day trip offers plenty of options for a day of fun.

How about heading to a local beach for a swim day, try rock climbing, or head out for a hike? A spa day is more affordable than a trip abroad, and so relaxing. Another idea is a sporting event or spending the day at a theme park (these are perfect for smaller graduating classes or friend groups).

If you have the travel bug, take a day trip to a nearby city to explore landmarks, museums, and local attractions. Catch a show, visit historical sites, or enjoy local cuisine without the need for overnight accommodations!

What are the most popular senior trip ideas for graduation?

The most popular senior trip ideas are beach vacations to destinations like Cancun or Hawaii, where students can relax and enjoy water activities. Theme parks such as Walt Disney World in Florida are also favorites for their rides and endless entertainment. Cities like New York or Paris offer a mix of cultural experiences, shopping, and sightseeing.

Do parents go on graduation trips?

Typically, no, but it’s up to you! These trips are a special time for graduating students to celebrate with their friends and classmates. It’s a chance for them to enjoy some independence and adventure before they begin an exciting new chapter of life. Sometimes, there might be adult chaperones to help keep everyone safe or if some of the kids are under 18.

Can you plan a senior trip just for you and your friends?

Absolutely! Planning a senior trip for you and your friends can be a lot of fun. It might even make it easier to personalize a trip that interests your friend group, rather than a larger graduating class. Another alternative is planning a family trip to celebrate your graduation, something that’s becoming more popular these days.

The 10 Best Rome Food Tours

Eating Europe – Twilight Trastevere Rome Food Tour

Laura Itzkowitz

When in Rome , you’d be remiss not to try the local specialties – there’s so much more than pizza, pasta and gelato (though you’ll find plenty of those too!). If it’s your first time visiting the Eternal City, you might be surprised to learn that some of the Italian dishes you’re used to ordering at home aren’t available at restaurants here (forget about chicken parmesan and spaghetti with meatballs). A local guide can introduce you to regional specialties like supplì (cheese stuffed rice balls), carbonara and cacio e pepe . Read on to discover the food tours and cooking classes that U.S. News identified as the best in Rome.

To determine the best Rome food tours, we used our own experiences along with recent traveler reviews. All of the featured tours have at least 100 reviews and a minimum rating of 4 out of 5 stars across multiple websites.

Editor’s Pick: Eating Europe – Twilight Trastevere Rome Food Tour

Eating Europe – Twilight Trastevere Rome Food Tour

U.S. News independently paid to send Laura Itzkowitz , a freelance journalist based in Rome, on this tour to provide readers with an unbiased, first-hand perspective of what to expect. Eating Europe – Twilight Trastevere Rome Food Tour was selected by our team as an Editor’s Pick thanks to its popularity and favorable user reviews.

Price: Adults from 133 euros (about $150); kids from 92 euros (about $102) Duration: 4 hours

This walking tour of Trastevere – often referred to as Rome’s bohemian neighborhood – is a great introduction to Roman cuisine and ties in a bit of the city’s history, too. The stops vary, but typically include a visit to a wine bar with a cellar that predates the Colosseum , a taste of porchetta (slow-roasted pork), street food, such as supplì , a typical antipasto like carciofi alla giudia (Jewish-style fried artichokes), two types of pasta and artisanal gelato.

The engaging guide on this tour had a great sense of humor and immediately created a sense of camaraderie among the group, joking that by the end we would be like a big, toxic Italian family. As we walked between stops, she pointed out monuments like the Basilica di Santa Maria in Trastevere and showed us the buildings constructed on top of the ancient Theatre of Pompey, near the site where Julius Caesar was killed. She explained the four types of Roman pasta ( cacio e pepe , gricia , carbonara and amatriciana ) and how to tell the difference between true artisanal gelato and the mass-produced stuff. I left feeling very full – both literally and figuratively speaking, with plenty of new-found knowledge.

The Twilight Trastevere Rome Food Tour is offered several times a day beginning at 3:30 p.m. Eating Europe also leads a foodie tour of the Testaccio neighborhood, among other options.

Why we love it:

  • Enjoy skip-the-line access to popular Trastevere restaurants like Da Enzo al 29 and Trapizzino.
  • You’ll learn about how Trastevere developed as a neighborhood for society’s outcasts during antiquity – and how they influenced the cuisine.
  • In addition to typical Roman specialties, you’ll taste an ancient recipe that’s rarely made these days.

Eat and Walk Italy – 3 in 1 Cooking Class: Fettuccine, Ravioli and Tiramisù

Price: Adults from 79 euros (about $87); kids from 70 euros (about $77) Duration: 3 hours

If you want a more hands-on experience than a typical walking tour can provide, this cooking class is a great option. At a restaurant just off Piazza Navona , you’ll join a small group to learn how to make fettuccine, ravioli and tiramisù from a local English-speaking chef. The chef will share tips for mastering the art of homemade pasta. You’ll make the pasta dough from scratch and choose your preferred sauce for the fettuccine, then stuff ravioli with seasonal fillings, and finally sit down to enjoy the meal you prepared with a glass of wine or a nonalcoholic beverage of your choosing.

The class is available every day and takes about three hours (1.5 hours for the lesson and 1.5 hours to enjoy the meal). Travelers say this class is great for families with teenagers and easy for people with no prior pasta-making experience. Classes are offered daily in the afternoon and evening. Prefer pizza to pasta? The company also hosts a pizza-making class.

The Roman Guy Tours – Trastevere Local Food Tour in Rome

Price: Adults from about $108; kids from about $87 Duration: 3 hours

This walking tour starts in the centro storico and then crosses the Tiber to Trastevere, with four stops along the way. You’ll sample meats and cheeses at a traditional salumeria (deli), stop for baccalà (fried cod filets) or supplì, then sit down at a trattoria for a three-course meal with antipasti, two Roman pastas and a main course before ending the evening with a gelato. The tour is capped at 12 participants and includes wine.

Tourgoers rave about the engaging, smart guides and the delicious food, though some reviewers were disappointed that pizza was not featured. Tours run daily, with time slots at 12:30 p.m. and in the evenings, starting at 5:15 p.m. The Roman Guy also offers tours of the city’s major sites, including the Colosseum and the Vatican.

The Roman Food Tour – Rome Food Tour in Prati

Price: Adults from 109 euros (about $121); kids from 95 euros (about $105) Duration: 4 hours

Foodies will love this walking tour of the Prati neighborhood, which includes samples of premium food and wine, such as 30-year aged balsamic vinegar, truffles and Barolo. According to reviewers, a highlight of this tour is a stop at Bonci Pizzarium, widely considered the best pizza al taglio (by the slice) in Rome. There’s also a stop at La Tradizione, one of the city’s best gourmet food shops, which has more than 400 cheeses and 300 types of meat. Finally, you’ll sit down to enjoy some pasta before ending with gelato at Fatamorgana, one of the best gelato shops in the city.

The tour runs several times per day, every day of the week, starting at 10:45 a.m. most days. A word of advice from past travelers: Skip breakfast if you go on the morning tour.

If you’re interested in exploring Rome’s other foodie neighborhoods, check out the company’s Trastevere tour, or its tour of Mercato Trionfale, the largest food market in Rome.

Devour Tours – Tastes & Traditions of Rome: Testaccio Food and Market Tour

Tastes & Traditions of Rome: Testaccio Food and Market Tour

Devour Tours

Price: Adults from $83; kids from $73 Duration: 3.5 hours

If you want to get off the beaten path and see an authentic Roman neighborhood, this food tour in Testaccio may be right for you. During the walking tour, you’ll learn about Testaccio’s ancient roots and how the old slaughterhouse (now shuttered) played a pivotal role in the development of Roman cuisine. The tour starts with a typical Roman breakfast, with espresso and a maritozzo (a soft bun filled with whipped cream), then visits the Mercato di Testaccio, which some locals say has remained more authentic than the market at Campo de’ Fiori, and includes a tour of an ancient wine cellar. Other highlights include lunch at a sixth-generation, family-run trattoria, and of course, plenty of samples of cheese, pizza and pasta.

Unlike some food tours, this one is adaptable for vegetarians, pescatarians and pregnant women; notify the company about any dietary restrictions at booking. The tours are limited to 12 people. Availability varies, but generally, the tour is offered Tuesday, Friday and Saturday at 10:30 am. Travelers praise the genuine experience and say that it was refreshing to get out of the more touristy historic center. Hungry for more? The company also leads an evening tour in Trastevere, in addition to cooking classes.

Raphael Tours – Rome Street Food Tour with Local Guide

Price: Adults from $52; kids from $45 Duration: 3 hours

Concentrated in the area around Campo de’ Fiori and the Jewish Ghetto , this three-hour walking tour focuses on street food like pizza and supplì. Stops on past tours have included the open-air market in Campo de’ Fiori, the famed Antico Forno Roscioli for some of the city’s best pizza and the old-school Sant' Eustachio Caffè near the Pantheon . You’ll also learn about Roman history in the Jewish Ghetto and Largo di Torre Argentina, where Julius Caesar was assassinated.

The group size is limited to 15 people and tours have two time slots available every day (morning or evening). Tourgoers praise the knowledgeable guides and love learning about the history of each dish. They also appreciate the reasonable ticket prices and sizable portions.

Raphael Tours offers a variety of foodie-themed outings around the city, as well as a kid-friendly tour of the Colosseum and Roman Forum.

Rome with Chef – Spritz & Spaghetti Class

Price: From 99 euros (about $110) Duration: 3 hours

If you’re nervous about cooking and want a little liquid courage to help you out, this class may just be for you. As soon as you arrive, the spritzes start flowing. You’ll learn tips and tricks for making the perfect Aperol spritz, then try a Campari spritz to see how they compare. After kneading your pasta dough, you’ll learn how to make one of the most classic sauces in Roman cuisine – carbonara or cacio e pepe – before ending on a sweet note with a taste of limoncello.

This three-hour class is limited to 12 participants. There are three time slots available every day. Participants suggested that this activity is great for solo travelers who want to meet other people in an informal setting during their trip. If you’d prefer to leave the cooking to someone else, consider the company’s Trastevere food tour.

Secret Food Tours – Rome Food Tour

Price: Adults from 89 euros (about $98); kids from 79 euros (about $87) Duration: 3 to 3.5 hours

One of the things that sets this apart from other tours is right in the name: every tour includes a delicious secret dish that’s only revealed during the tour. Starting with an espresso or cappuccino at one of Rome’s oldest cafes, the walking tour makes six or seven stops around Piazza Navona, Campo de’ Fiori and the Jewish Ghetto for pasta, pizza and gelato, among other tasty samples. While it mainly focuses on Roman cuisine, you’ll also get to try some specialties from other Italian regions, including cannoli and stracciatella cheese.

If you’d like to enhance your tour, consider paying more for the upgraded drinks package, which includes prosecco or a spritz, Italian beer and organic Italian wine. Participants praised the lighthearted and informative guides and loved the food they ate during the tour. Others appreciate that the tour takes you to the less touristy areas of Rome.

Tours are offered several times a day beginning at 11 a.m. Secret Food Tours also runs an outing that concentrates on Trastevere.

Gourmetaly Rome Food Tours – Campo de’ Fiori, Jewish Ghetto and Trastevere

Price: Adults from 97 euros (about $107); kids from 70 euros (about $77) Duration: 3.5 hours

This company has been leading food tours in Rome for more than a decade, so you can be sure they know what they’re doing. Covering three neighborhoods in the city center (Campo de’ Fiori, the Jewish Ghetto and Trastevere), this plastic-free walking tour features 15 different food samples at five locations. Highlights include sampling mozzarella, burrata and pecorino romano, trying fried artichokes or zucchini blossoms (depending on the season), digging into cacio e pepe and amatriciana, and tasting organic gelato. Reviewers recommend taking the tour early on in your trip so that you can make use of the guide’s recommendations and tips for avoiding tourist traps (participants leave with a restaurant guide and cookbook, which will come in handy if you’re staying for a few days). Tourgoers describe the tour pace as leisurely and the portions as generous.

The tour is offered in English multiple times per day and private tours can be booked in Spanish, French, German or Italian. If you have more of a sweet tooth, you may want to book the company’s espresso, gelato and tiramisu tour, which visits the cafes, bakeries and gelato shops surrounding the Pantheon and Navona square.

Withlocals – The 10 Tastings of Rome

Price: Varies Duration: 3 hours

When you book this private food tour of Rome, you have the chance to choose your local guide. You might end up with a pastry chef, an actor, a photographer or even a yoga teacher. The walking tour winds its way through Campo de’ Fiori and Trastevere, with 10 food and drink samples along the way. You’ll try sweet and savory items, including buffalo mozzarella and gelato.

Because this tour is private, it’s completely customizable. Availability varies depending on the guide you choose; pricing varies by the number of people in your party. For instance, a group of four adults can expect to pay about $99 per person. Let your guide know in advance about any allergies or dietary restrictions and they’ll tailor the tour to your preferences. Reviewers raved about the fantastic guides, who made them feel like they were visiting a friend.

The company also offers a food tour of Vatican City, as well as more traditional sightseeing tours of the city’s top attractions.
