You can choose from several Trawick travel insurance plans.

Safe Travels First Class: This plan covers trip cancellation , interruption and delay, as well as fees associated with reinstating frequent traveler points. It includes up to $150,000 in emergency medical coverage and up to $1,000,000 for emergency medical evacuation. This plan also has the option to add " Cancel for Any Reason " protection (within 14 days of the initial trip deposit date), though it’s not available in New York or Washington state.

Safe Travels Single Trip: One of the more budget-friendly plans on the roster, Safe Travels Single Trip covers up to $75,000 in emergency medical costs and $350,000 in medical evacuation expenses .

Safe Travels Explorer: Another budget-friendly plan, Safe Travels Explorer gets you $50,000 toward emergency medical costs and $200,000 toward medical evacuation costs.

Safe Travels Explorer Plus: The medical coverage limits on the Safe Travels Explorer Plus plan are the same as on the Safe Travels Explorer plan, with the addition of a pre-existing condition waiver , as long as you purchase coverage within seven days of the initial trip deposit date.

Safe Travels Journey: With the Safe Travels Journey plan, you’re covered for up to $150,000 in emergency medical coverage and up to $500,000 in emergency medical evacuation. You also have frequent travels rewards protection (up to $250 for reinstating points if you cancel award travel) and a pre-existing conditions waiver, if you purchase a policy within 14 days of the initial trip deposit date.

Safe Travels Voyager: The Safe Travels Voyager plan is the only one that covers quarantine accommodation expenses as part of travel delay coverage in case you test positive for a covered illness and can’t fly home. It’s also the only plan that lets you increase trip delay coverage limits. You can add Cancel for Any Reason protection to this policy.

SafeTreker Basic . This plan is similar to other Trawick International options except for one major difference: It includes coverage for 450+ sports and activities for travelers up to age 65. High-altitude climbing requires additional vetting. If you're planning a particularly adventurous trip, consider this option.

Let’s compare the Trawick International plans and costs for a 10-day trip to France for a 35-year-old traveler from California with a prepaid, nonrefundable deposit of $1,000.

Once you pull up the details for each policy, take a close look at what is covered and the corresponding limits. When evaluating costs and coverage, consider what trip protections are important to you and what you can live without.

Also, take a look in your wallet and find out what kind of trip insurance is already offered by one of your credit cards . Most of the details are spelled out in each card’s guide to benefits, so use that knowledge to determine what else needs to be covered for your trip.

If none of your credit cards provide enough trip protections, consider purchasing a policy from Trawick.

Trawick International has plans for different types of trips. Every plan has different coverage based on the state you reside and the policy you purchase.

Generally, some exclusions include accidental injury or sickness when traveling against the advise of a physician, care or treatment that is payable under any other insurance, and pre-existing conditions.

Trawick International has been in business for about 25 years and is a legitimate travel insurance provider. Trawick International reviews on Trustpilot and Squaremouth are generally good, with scores around 4.5/5 and 4.15/5, respectively.

According to Trawick, more than 650,000 travelers bought its coverage in 2021.

Trawick International covers trip cancellation, interruption and delay, fees associate with reinstating points, baggage delay, medical emergencies, pre-existing condition waiver, Cancel For Any Reason, pet medical costs and more. Depending on your state, different Trawick travel insurance plans have the option to add Cancel For Any Reason within 14-21 days of the initial trip deposit date. Some plans include reimbursement for up to 50% of the pre-paid nonrefundable payments while others cover up to 75% of costs.

With unpredictable weather, frequent flight cancellations and or the possibility of an emergency, there’s no time like now to add a protection plan to your upcoming vacation. Travel insurance can save you more than just money — it also can save you time and spare you stress.

Trawick International offers a good balance of cost to coverage and is a legitimate company for your travel insurance needs.

I recently applied for medical insurance with Trawick International and had a positive experience overall. I was particularly pleased with their customer service. Although I had to call them myself as I didn't receive the promised callback, my insurance issue was resolved fairly quickly.

Great experience if you want to spend your money and never see it again

Two of us were travelling together so we purchased insurance at the same time. For some reason this meant that one policy was issued for the two of us (we didn't realize this until later). Later on, I had some minor inconvenience and had to go see a doctor. Submitted all the papers I got to Trawick International afterwards. But they kept asking for more documents which I would somehow have to get from the doctor in a language I don't speak. So I decided not to spend any more time on it and drop the whole claim. It felt like Trawick International didn't even take a look at all the stuff I sent them. Later on, we got enrolled into the state insurance. So when we wanted to cancel our policy they told us that as a claim was filed we are not eligible for any refund. Mind that the claim process was never completed as I abandoned it because they kept asking for documents and it was an endless timesink. And the other person couldn't get a refund either as she was on the same policy as it turns out. So yeah. Great experience. Good customer service does not look like this.

Speedy Refund With No Red Tape

In my original request for my trip insurance refund the company explained clearly what I needed to submit and provided the necessary link. Christine, the agent u dealt with directly, acted quickly to approve and submit my refund. And, she was prompt and courteous when responding to several follow-up questions I asked her. I would definitely use this company again.

Unncessary delays in processing

It took 4 weeks from when I notified you for you to identify all the documents you needed. It has been an additional 4 weeks since you confirmed receipt of all information and you STILL have not processed the claim. Very unhappy with your service. This was a cut and dry case – doctors note for surgery cancelling trip; receipts demonstrating payment…..and you still haven’t processed it. Still waiting. Very disappointed. Will not be using nor recommending your service in the future.

Reply from Trawick International

Hi there -- I just reached out to you for more information, but I see that the claims team is at work on this already. A team lead is looking into it and has been asked to provide an update. We apologize for any frustration caused, and hope to have this resolved for you soon. Thank you. -Melissa

Beware, NOT a “cancel for any reason” type policy. Will update review if we can appeal

Beware, NOT a “cancel for any reason” type policy. In preparing for our honeymoon I specifically searched for a “cancel for any reason” type of insurance policy and came across Trawick travel insurance. We purchased a trip cancel-for-any-reason policy for our honeymoon trip to Peru and later found out I needed surgery 2 weeks before the trip. Despite ample medical documentation our claim was initially denied. I obtained additional attestation from the surgeon operated me also recommending no travel - but was told this was not necessary when I called. Do not recommend at this point . Will update if we can appeal!

Great unless you need them for anything

Had to evacuate tour because of Covid 19 diagnosis. I am a complex medical case with immune suppression that affects less than 5% of population. Per their process, was examined by a physician who cleared me to fly as long as I used a mask. Insurance company denied my request for immediate evacuation due to "CDC Guidance", against the recommendation of the physician who examined me and my personal medical needs based on my history. GUIDANCE is not a RULE. Am STILL in first stage clams process, well beyond their own self declared 15 day turn around. Called for the third time to follow today and they acknowledged that they are late and requested expedited processing. Thanks so much for the help. Competitive price but service is definitely not int the best interest of the person who paid them for the insurance.

This company is a total scam

EDIT — I still have NOT received ANY payment from this company, well after 20 business days after my claims were approved. Confirming that this company is indeed a scam!! Do NOT use them! This company is a total scam. I filed a claim in October 2023 and still have not received a decision in March 2024. Every time I call, someone tells me it will be 10 more business days (I have called 7 times now). The other day I asked to speak to a manager and they told me I would get a call back. I have heard nothing 2 days later. Do not use this company for travel health insurance. There is no accountability and you will just get passed around for months on end. I have not gotten a response to my emails either, after months of asking.

Hi, Ms. Niemi; I understand you spoke with our claims customer service manager recently and received clarification on what is needed for your claim. We hope that helped straighten things out, but if not, please reach out to let us know! We apologize for any confusion or frustration caused. Thank you - Melissa

Trawick management was so helpful in assisting us in sorting out an issue that came up with a recent claim. I especially want to thank Lupe for her help and professional handling of our situation. We had to cancel a trip due to illness and are happy to say that we will be receiving a full refund. We will definitely be using Trawick to insure all our international trips in the future!

Good Support

Travel Insurance taken with Trawick over a year ago. Three times we cancelled our flights due to health issues and received credits from the airlines. Customer service reps have been great throughout. Since we do not know when future plans will work, they offered to refund the premium and then did it which will simplify things until we rebook.

Agent was terrific

Agent was terrific. Due to circumstances had to cancel and rebook a plan via IPhone from a poor service area. Agent was very patient and accommodating. Was able to supply and clarify differences on two similar plans. Agent Amanda , was able to help through the tech issues to get us all the needed information and make the change to the plan best for our group. Good experience

Outstanding Customer Service

Christine of Trawick International's administrative services promptly and thoroughly replied to my e-mail questions regarding my travel insurance coverage for an upcoming trip. Her response was very polite and straight forward. I am very satisfied with the ease of contacting Trawick International. This company went above and beyond to assure me that even though my travel plans were a few miles short of 100 — their policy would cover the cost of my very expensive hotel if I have to cancel. Kathy, the representative with whom I spoke, was kind, thorough, and clear.

Do not hesitate! Get Trawick Travel Insurance!

I have always been hesitant about travel insurance, but I’m so grateful I finally started using Trawick. Getting Trawick insurance was a lifesaver for our Hawaii trip! Our flights got completely changed through the airline, and we had to completely rebook putting us in a real financial bind. Luckily, with all the appropriate paperwork, I submitted a request, and got refunded through Trawick due to the trip delay. We will be getting travel insurance through Trawick for every trip we go on from now on!

Trawick International Travel Insurance Review — Is It Worth It?

Why Purchase Travel Insurance

Travel insurance and covid-19, why purchase travel insurance from trawick international, types of policies offered by trawick international, trawick international — reviews of plans and prices, how to get a quote, to credit card travel insurance, to other travel insurance companies, how to file a trawick international travel insurance claim, final thoughts.

See our Advertising Policy for more about our partners, how we make money, and our rating methodology. Opinions and recommendations are ours alone.

There are many travel insurance companies you could consider before your next vacation.

One such company is Trawick International , which got its start in 1998 by providing insurance for students at universities and study-abroad participants.

Now, 25 years later, the company sells a variety of travel insurance plans, including those for domestic and international travel and even covering volunteer workers. Its most popular plans for U.S.-based travelers are underwritten by Nationwide, a household name in insurance.

Let’s look at everything you need to know about Trawick International insurance , review some of its plan types and costs, and then compare it to your other options for travel insurance.

While it’s not fun to think about, travel insurance can protect your health and your bank account when something goes wrong during your trip. This can include relocation when medical help isn’t nearby and reimbursement for extra expenses when your suitcase is lost or stolen.

Travel insurance covers the parts of your trip that don’t go according to plan. This includes cancellations and interruptions due to unexpected events like severe weather, illness, medical emergencies, theft, and more .

Each time you travel, you’ll decide whether to purchase travel insurance. You can purchase from travel companies while buying flights or cruises as well as purchasing from specialized travel insurance companies and customizing your policy to suit your needs. This also allows you to shop around for the best price . Additionally, you should consider whether it makes sense to purchase insurance coverage for each trip or an annual policy.

When does it make sense to purchase travel insurance? Consider the following:

  • Your trip includes non-refundable upfront expenses and losing these (if your trip is canceled at the last minute) would be costly.
  • You have multiple travel providers (ex: airlines, hotels, cruises, a tour guide, etc.), creating additional opportunities for pain points .

While travel insurance is meant to cover  unforeseen  events, buying  Cancel for Any Reason coverage  also might allow you to cancel your trip for any reason.

Outdoor hiking and travel

The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic presented several new and unique problems for travelers. First, the medical concerns — should you contract COVID-19 while away from home, you may need to see a doctor or spend time in a hospital.

There are financial concerns, as well. The cost of tests, hospital visits, and seeing a doctor in a foreign country can add up quickly — as can the costs of quarantines or additional hotel nights. Moreover, some countries still require travelers to present proof of travel insurance that can cover these costs should they get sick or test positive for COVID-19 while in their destination country.

Trawick International has been providing travel insurance for 25 years and has an average of 4.4 stars across customer reviews on Trustpilot and 4.13 on Squaremouth . It also provides immediate plan documents and plan ID cards after purchasing a policy, helping you get proof of coverage immediately.

On top of positive customer reviews and the fact that it’s an established company with a worldwide footprint, Trawick International tends to provide higher maximum coverage amounts than competitors when comparing similar plan types. Moreover, COVID-19 coverage is included across plans , and coverage for pre-existing conditions can be added to most plans. This is good news for those needing this protection.

The variety of plan types is another bonus. While it may feel overwhelming to see so many options, this also indicates that plans are tailored to your specific needs, rather than a “one-size-fits-all” approach.

The biggest positive, however, may be Trawick’s partnership with Nationwide , which underwrites most of its trip cancellation-related policies for U.S.-based travelers. As a household name in insurance, this provides a sense of reliability.

Trawick International offers several types of insurance , depending on your home country, destination , and whether you’re looking for robust coverage or coverage that’s focused on medical costs .

For example, U.S. residents traveling internationally can buy a Safe Travels Outbound policy that’s focused on medical expenses but also includes coverage for delays, interruptions, or baggage problems. Policies start at $20 but have a 5-day minimum .

The most popular plan is the Safe Travels Voyager plan . It includes $1,000,000 of medical evacuation coverage, trip delay coverage, baggage delay benefits, rental car protections, and the ability to add “Cancel for Any Reason” (CFAR) coverage for an extra cost . However, there’s no option to add coverage for pre-existing medical conditions . The CFAR coverage can reimburse up to 75% of your non-refundable costs if you cancel at least 2 days before departure.

A Safe Travels First Class policy provides $1,000,000 in medical evacuation coverage, $150,000 in coverage for medical expenses, and missed connection coverage (for cruises and tours), but it requires a 12-hour delay before your baggage benefits kick in. You can add CFAR coverage to this policy also.

The Safe Travels Single Trip plan covers up to $75,000 of medical expenses and $350,000 for emergency medical evacuation (including COVID-19). Unfortunately, you can’t add CFAR to these policies.

With a Safe Travels Explorer plan, you get trip cancellation and trip interruption coverage at a low cost . You can add coverage for pre-existing conditions if you buy your plan within 7 days of your first deposit toward the trip.

If you’re concerned about coverage for pre-existing medical conditions, understanding the timeline for when you need to purchase your policy is critical. It’s typically based on the time from your first payment toward your trip.

A Safe Travels Rental Plus plan covers your non-refundable trip expenses if bad weather cancels or interrupts your trip. This policy applies to costs for tickets, hotels, vacation rentals, and more.

Students studying outside their home countries can buy a Collegiate Care Essential policy. It covers up to $150,000 of expenses per injury or illness with a maximum of $300,000 per policy. It covers COVID-19 expenses as well as injuries from some sports.

To compare prices, we got quotes for a 1-week trip to England for a family of 4 (ages 35, 34, 5, and 3). The travel dates were October 5-11, 2023, and the first trip deposit was made within 24 hours. We estimated the trip cost as $1,000 per person.

Plans don’t provide coverage in Belarus, Russia, or Ukraine . Additionally, the optional add-ons you see will vary based on your home state of residence .

If you’re looking for annual travel insurance, Trawick International has it. Here’s how the 3 options compare:

Note that for the above plans, coverage starts the day after purchase and is only available for U.S. citizens and residents.

If you’re looking for a plan that covers adventure sports, you can read about inclusions and exclusions with the SafeTreker plan .

Trawick also offers plans for non-U.S. residents traveling to countries outside the U.S., plans for those who need insurance that meets Schengen visa requirements, and more. We’ve focused on plans available to U.S. residents here, but there are additional options.

You can obtain a quote online easily by heading to Trawick International’s website . Interestingly, you can choose “multiple countries” as your destination .

Trawick International home page screenshot

After choosing your home and destination country (ies), provide your travel dates . Then, you’ll provide your deposit date and trip cost . You also have the option of choosing whether you want trip protection (for cancellations).

Trawick International page 2 get a quote

Policies will be cheaper if you choose “no” to trip protection, resulting in a policy that’s mostly focused on medical coverage. On the next page, you’ll provide the ages of anyone traveling on this policy and indicate whether or not you’re a student .

After this, you’ll receive a list of quotes showing prices and payout maximums in the various categories. You’ll also see options for add-ons and upgrades .

How Trawick International Compares

How does Trawick stack up to its competitors? We used Squaremouth to compare prices for that same 1-week family trip to England. Here’s how Trawick International compares to travel insurance plans and costs from USI Ruby and Generali Global Assistance Preferred when looking for similar types of coverage.

Trawick International insurance comparison medical and evacuation

Trawick’s plan is the most expensive . All 3 plans cover COVID-19 but only USI and Trawick offer add-ons for pre-existing medical conditions ; Generali doesn’t offer this on the Preferred plan. While Generali only offers $150,000 of secondary emergency medical coverage, USI and Trawick offer $250,000 of primary coverage . Trawick offers $1,000,000 of medical evacuation and repatriation coverage, while the other 2 only offer $500,000.

Trawick International insurance comparison loss or delay

Trawick has the shortest waiting period for baggage delays and travel delays, as well as the highest maximum payouts in these areas. It also provides the highest maximum coverage for missed connections and baggage loss.

Trawick International insurance comparison cancellation medical

All 3 plans have the same coverage amounts for trip cancellation and trip interruption. Generali’s coverage for hurricanes and weather kicks in immediately , while Trawick requires waiting 12 hours; USI requires 48 hours.

Trawick International charges a higher cost than competitors for plans with the same types of coverage if you compare mid-tier plans. However, its maximum payouts are higher in several categories, plus waiting periods for delay-related coverage are shorter in several aspects.

You can file a claim with Trawick International online, by email, or through the mail . You’ll start by finding the name of your plan (listed in the confirmation coverage, which you received after purchase) and gathering all documents related to your claim . These include receipts, documents related to the claim — such as a doctor’s note or letter from the airline confirming the reason for a delay — and a claim form specific to your plan type .

If you have a Safe Travels plan, you can submit your claim online at CBP Connect , by email to [email protected] , or by mail to this address:

Co-ordinated Benefit Plans, LLC On Behalf of Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company and Affiliated Companies P.O. Box 26222 Tampa, FL 33623

Trawick International offers a wide range of travel insurance plans, has largely positive customer reviews, and its maximum coverage amounts tend to be higher than competitors when looking at similar plans. That said, its costs can be higher than competitors, so evaluate whether you need these extra benefits before paying for them.

All plans should cover COVID-19 and several cover pre-existing medical conditions. However, you need special plans for adventure sports. If you’re going to buy a plan, ensure you know what you need and get the right policy. Having a policy that doesn’t cover your needs is the same as not having a policy at all.

For Capital One products listed on this page, some of the above benefits are provided by Visa ® or Mastercard ® and may vary by product. See the respective Guide to Benefits for details, as terms and exclusions apply.

For the baggage insurance plan benefit of the Amex Platinum card, baggage insurance plan coverage can be in effect for covered persons for eligible lost, damaged, or stolen baggage during their travel on a common carrier vehicle (e.g. plane, train, ship, or bus) when the Entire Fare for a ticket for the trip (one-way or round-trip) is charged to an eligible card. Coverage can be provided for up to $2,000 for checked baggage and up to a combined maximum of $3,000 for checked and carry-on baggage, in excess of coverage provided by the common carrier. Additional coverages offered by Trawick travel insurance

“cancel for any reason” (cfar) coverage.

“Cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage is available as an optional upgrade with the Trawick Safe Travels First Class and Safe Travels Voyager plans. CFAR coverage reimburses up to 75% of the prepaid, nonrefundable trip costs when you cancel your trip for any reason — not just those listed in the policy — as long as you do so at least two days before your scheduled departure date.

This optional upgrade must be purchased within 14 days (First Class) or 21 days (Voyager) of making your first trip deposit. CFAR is not available for New York or Washington state residents.

Rental car damage

Rental car damage coverage is included or offered as an add-on with most Trawick travel insurance plans. It provides reimbursement for the cost of repairs, rental charges or the actual cash value of the car if the car is damaged because of covered reasons. This coverage is not available for New York or Texas residents.

What Trawick travel insurance doesn't cover

Like all travel insurance companies, Trawick travel insurance doesn’t cover every incident that may arise during your travels. It is always a good idea to read the fine print before purchasing your policy. For Trawick travel insurance plans, examples of exclusions include:

  • Any trip taken against the advice of a physician.
  • Immunizations, routine physicals or cosmetic surgery.
  • Illegal activities.
  • Injuries due to participation in adventure or extreme activities such as bungee jumping, caving, mountain climbing, paragliding, rappelling and scuba diving.
  • Injuries due to intoxication or drug use.
  • Medical tourism.
  • Mental, nervous or psychological disorder.
  • Natural disasters that begin before you buy the policy.
  • Normal pregnancy or childbirth.

Trawick’s “free-look” period gives you a specific length of time to review your policy and cancel for a full refund if it doesn’t suit your needs. Most states have a 10-day free look period beginning the date the policy was purchased (not available in NY or WA).

For example, let's look at what it would cost to insure a 35-year-old resident of Ohio spending $8,000 on a two-week trip to France. Below are the costs for each of the six different coverage options.

The cost of coverage ranges from the bottom-tier Safe Travels Explorer plan at $257.04 to the top-tier Safe Travels First Class policy for $453.33. That equates to about 3% to 6% of the total trip cost, which is on the lower end when compared to the average cost of travel insurance .

Now let's look at the cost of coverage for a 55-year-old from Colorado traveling to Argentina and spending $6,000 on a three-week trip.

The premiums for this traveler are higher, but that's to be expected given their age. The lowest cost Safe Travels First Class plan costs $243.23 and the top-tier Safe Travels Voyager costs $574.14. That represents a cost of between 4% and 9.5% of the total trip cost, higher than the previous example but still within industry averages.

Lastly, we'll look at the premium costs for a 45-year-old resident of Texas traveling to Fiji for two weeks and spending $7,000 on the trip.

The lowest cost plan in this scenario is the Safe Travels Explorer plan, which runs $284.28. And the most expensive is the Safe Travels First Class, at $405.54. You're paying between 4% and 5.8% of the total trip cost at these prices. Again, that's right on track with the averages in the travel insurance industry.

Trawick International travel insurance has several different claims departments and forms, so how you file a claim will vary depending on the coverage you purchase.

You can find claims forms and contact information on Trawick's claims forms page . That's where you'll find information regarding where to mail or email your claim form and contact information for the appropriate claims group.

Reviews on SquareMouth and Google say claims process can take up to several months and require constant hassling. To avoid additional issues with the claims process, be sure to keep thorough documentation of any unexpected costs incurred during travel. Additionally, you should be as specific as possible when filing a claim.

Trawick International vs. Allianz Travel Insurance

Allianz and Trawick International travel insurance are similar in offering several different coverage options.

Allianz offers 10 travel insurance plans, including one-off and multi-trip policies. So you'll have options whether you're looking to cover a specific trip or plan to take multiple trips a year. Of course, the different plans offer varying levels of coverage, and the premiums depend on the traveler and trip specifics.

Allianz's most popular single-trip travel insurance option, the OneTrip Prime plan, offers up to $100,000 in trip cancellation coverage, up to $150,000 in trip interruption coverage, $50,000 in emergency medical coverage, up to $1,000 in coverage for baggage loss, theft, or damage, and up to $800 in travel-delay coverage.

Trawick's most comparable plan is its Safe Travels Explorer Plus plan, which offers up to $100,000 in trip cancellation and interruption coverage, $50,000 in emergency medical coverage, up to $750 for personal effects, and trip delay coverage of $500.

The best way to decide which company to go with is to compare quotes using your specific trip details and personal information, as those are the details that will affect the cost the most.

Trawick International vs. Nationwide Travel Insurance

Nationwide is a household name when it comes to insurance providers and one of the most well-known and recognized insurance firms in the US. By providing just two single-trip options, the Essential and Prime plan, Nationwide travel insurance has made it simple to find coverage. Nationwide also offers yearly trip insurance for those that travel a lot throughout the year, as well as Cruise specific plans and annual trip insurance.

To compare the two companies, we'll put Nationwide's Essential plan beside Trawick International travel insurance's middle-of-the-road Safe Travels Single Trip plan.

Nationwide's Essential Plan provides up to $10,000 in trip cancellation coverage, up to $250,000 in emergency medical evacuation, up to $150 per day ($600 maximum) reimbursement for travel delays of six or more hours, and coverage for delayed or lost baggage.

In comparison, Trawick's Safe Travels Single Trip plan offers 100% of the insured trip (up to two times the trip cost) in trip cancellation coverage, $350,000 in emergency medical evacuation, and up to $200 per day ($600 maximum) for travel delays of 12 or more hours, and lost and delayed baggage coverage.

So, this particular plan from Trawick offers slightly higher coverage limits for most of the coverages compared.

The high-tier Prime Plan from Nationwide offers even more coverage, including up to $30,000 in trip cancellation, up to $1 million in coverage for emergency medical evacuation, up to 200% of the trip cost (maximum of $60,000) in trip interruption coverage, and $250 per day for trip delays of six or more hours.

To compare, Trawick's highest-tier Safe Travels Voyager plan comes with trip cancellation coverage of up to $100,000, up to $1 million in emergency medical evacuation, up to 150% of the insured trip cost for trip interruption, up to $2,000 maximum reimbursement for travel delays, and coverage for delayed or lost baggage.

Comparing these two policies, you see how it's somewhat of an apples-to-oranges comparison, as some coverage limits are higher or lower. And don't forget that the coverage premiums will vary depending on the traveler and trip specifics.

Trawick International vs. Credit Card Travel Insurance Benefits

Be sure to compare the coverage of travel insurance plans with the coverage offered by your rewards credit cards before purchasing a travel insurance policy. Some basic coverage, like rental car insurance, could already be available through one of your existing cards.

If you're on a road trip and all your expenses are refundable, or if your health insurance covers you while abroad and you don't think you'll have many medical bills, the coverage from your credit card may be sufficient.

It's also worth noting that in most cases, credit card travel protection is only supplementary to a travel insurance policy. This implies you'll have to file your claim with the other relevant insurance (such as the airline) before filing a claim with your credit card company.

Our Take on Trawick International Travel Insurance

Trawick offers a large selection of plans compared to other travel insurance providers. Most companies have three to four policy options — but Trawick offers more than 20. Each plan is highly customized, with some options for specific types of travelers. For example, students studying abroad will find annual plans to last throughout a semester, while domestic travelers can find medical insurance that offers protection within the U.S.

Having such a large range of plans gives you more control over your coverage, but it can also make the buying process overwhelming. Trawick’s purchase and claims process is not the most intuitive either, which some customers complain about in online reviews. We gave Trawick 4.5 out of 5 stars for its comprehensive coverage choices and higher-than-average limits on so many policies.

How Much Does Trawick Travel Insurance Cost?

Our review found the average Trawick customer paid about $180 for travel insurance coverage . But the price you’ll pay for Trawick Travel Insurance depends on the plan you pick. Each Trawick plan includes a specific range of coverages, and policies with the widest breadth of coverage are also the most expensive.

The cost of travel insurance can depend on your age, how much your trip costs and how long you’re going for. If you’re taking a low-value backpacking trip and staying in hostels, your insurance provider will need to reimburse less than if you’re going on a luxury family cruise . Domestic Travel Insurance

Below is an estimate for a domestic trip for the same two adults mentioned above. The trip costs $4,000 and starts June 2, 2023 and ends June 16, 2023. The trip deposit was made on April 10, 2023. In this example, we see that costs increase substantially when adding optional coverage.

Trawick International Travel Insurance Reviews

At the time of our review, Trawick International had 4.5 out of 5 stars from over 400 customers on Trustpilot . Many customers report that representatives are friendly and knowledgeable. However, some customers complain the company was unresponsive when they filed a claim and it can take months to resolve it.

Below are company reviews found on Trustpilot. We emailed Trawick International for a comment on the reviews and have not yet received a response.

“We had purchased travel insurance with Trawick for a trip in March, but the morning of the trip we had a medical emergency that made it impossible for us to travel. I thought there was no way to use the policy on our new travel dates but I reached out to Trawick's customer service and they were very helpful! They asked me for documentation to prove we rescheduled our trip and when I provided it they changed the dates on our policy so that we can use it during our re-scheduled trip. Thank you!” —Juliana González Tobón “I have always been hesitant about travel insurance , but I’m so grateful I finally started using Trawick. Getting Trawick insurance was a lifesaver for our Hawaii trip! Our flights got completely changed through the airline, and we had to completely rebook putting us in a real financial bind. Luckily, with all the appropriate paperwork, I submitted a request, and got refunded through Trawick due to the trip delay . We will be getting travel insurance through Trawick for every trip we go on from now on!” —Kaelan Young “Trip to Peru/Machu Picchu was canceled due to several issues in Peru, [primarily] being no train service to Machu Picchu. Trawick provided conflicting information on whether the claim was covered. It is clear that they are doing everything they can to avoid paying a claim, or provide other options, as promised. Use another, reputable insurance provider!” —Peter Lievense “They are constantly deferring the final resolution of the claim by 15 business days. After those elapse, they say wait another 15 business days and you get in a vicious cycle when they do not provide resolution EVER! I have had an incident on my trip a few months ago, but they are constantly ignoring my emails and do not provide any resolution.” —K. Stefanov

The process to file a claim with Trawick may depend on when you bought your policy and your chosen coverage. You can usually file a claim online using Trawick’s customer portal, via email or by mailing a form to its corporate office.

The basic steps to file your insurance claim with Trawick include:

  • Gather your documentation: You will need to gather various documentation to support your claim. For example, if you are injured abroad and making a medical coverage claim, you will need to submit your doctor bills and a hospital report detailing the incident.
  • Find your plan information: Next, find your plan name and ID, or contact customer service to gather this information if you don’t have it handy.

Trawick International vs. Competitors

Trawick is not the only travel insurance company offering options to protect an upcoming vacation or a business trip. Explore some of the other top travel insurance providers using the table below.

Your destination also plays a role in pricing. For example, some countries have more robust transportation and medical service networks than others, which can influence pricing.

What’s Not Covered by Trawick International Travel Insurance?

With so many policy options, you may be more likely to find the coverage you need with Trawick. However, the company commonly excludes a few items from its policies, including:

  • Higher travel interruptions: Many of Trawick’s travel insurance plans only include trip interruption up to 100% of your travel cost. This may not compensate for additional expenses you incur if your trip gets canceled, like additional booking fees on nonrefundable airfare. Competitors like Nationwide and HTH Worldwide include up to 200% trip cost reimbursement, which may make these options better for those worried about potential travel interruptions.
  • All-inclusive coverage: While this is not a specific exclusion, some travelers want a quick, all-inclusive approach to finding coverage. While Trawick’s coverage options are extensive, finding your perfect plan can take a while. Streamlined coverage providers like Faye will likely offer a much faster buying process for general insurance coverages.

Is Trawick International a Good Choice for Travel Insurance?

With such a range of options, Trawick is one of the best travel insurance providers if you’re looking for a specific level or type of coverage. Trawick is a one-stop shop for all types of coverage, and its coverage limits are competitive with other providers. However, it does not offer the lowest prices based on travel insurance companies we have reviewed.

While Trawick offers many insurance choices, its large selection may overwhelm shoppers. If you’re looking for a quick option for travel insurance, we recommend choosing a more general provider like Travelex , Faye or Nationwide . Trawick’s coverage is most useful for travelers with unique insurance needs and those wanting more control over their policy details.

Frequently Asked Questions About Trawick Travel Insurance

Is trawick international a reputable company.

Yes — Trawick International is a reputable company that’s been in business since 1998 and has been accredited by the Better Business Bureau (BBB) since 2013. Their plans are underwritten by Nationwide, which is a reputable insurance company with strong financial ratings. Trawick gets many positive reviews, but some customer review websites cite complaints about how long the claims process can take. That said, Trawick International does take time to research customer complaints and follow up.

Is Trawick owned by Nationwide?

Trawick Travel Insurance is an independent insurance provider. However, policies issued through Trawick are underwritten by Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company and administered by Co-ordinated Benefit Plans.

Is it worth getting international travel insurance?

Buying travel insurance for international trips can be worthwhile since international trips tend to cost more due to airline and accommodation costs, especially when you’re going a far distance for an extended period. If you don’t have trip protection, canceling could mean you lose a large sum in nonrefundable trip costs.

However, some credit cards provide cancellation protections as well, so it’s worth checking card benefits before buying insurance. And if you purchase refundable hotel stays and airfare, travel cancellation insurance may not be necessary.

How much does international travel insurance cost?

Costs of international travel insurance can depend on how much the trip costs, who’s going and how long you’re going for. A sample Safe Travels Flex quote on a trip to Barbados for two people aged 35 and 27 costs $92.64, and prices increase the more coverage you choose. Some of the best travel insurance companies let you check rates online, which can help you review and compare many options quickly.

What is the best plan to get international travel insurance?

The best plan for international travel is one that provides you with enough cancellation and interruption coverage to reimburse prepaid trip costs if a trip doesn’t go as planned. Aside from cancellation coverage, emergency medical protection can be worth buying when traveling internationally since stateside health insurance may not cover medical expenses abroad.

Trawick International’s Safe Travels Explorer, Safe Travels Journey and Safe Travels Voyager plans each provide cancellation protection and high emergency medical expense coverage limits that could make it ideal for an out-of-country trip.

Trawick International & Cancel For Any Reason Insurance

Trawick has the optional Cancel For Any Reason coverage available with two plans: Voyager (their most popular plan) and First Class.

Some companies, such as Allianz , don’t offer this upgrade on any plans. Even though it is optional, I believe it is better to have the option. This is why I recommend Travel Insured over Allianz.

Travelers like the peace-of-mind this coverage provides. It gives you a lot of flexibility in cancelling your trip and still getting most of your money back.

Trawick International and Covid-19

All  Trawick plans covers Covid-19 for both trip cancellation and emergency medical expenses.

Trip Cancellation and Covid-19

Trawick treats Coronavirus like any other sickness when it comes to trip cancellation coverage . Trip cancellation covers cancellations if someone gets sick or injured before the trip and cannot travel. This is the most popular reason for trip cancellation, and travelers make claims for this all the time. It might be a child with the flu. Or a parent having a stroke and you need to care for them.

In the case of Covid, if you get sick before departure and your doctor advises you to cancel, this is a covered reason for cancelling . You would receive any trip expenses you lose as a reimbursement from the insurance company. Physicians provide verification for this all the time.

Emergency Medical Treatment and Covid-19

Similarly, Trawick’s plans cover Covid as they would any other sickness for emergency medical care . If you are traveling abroad and get sick or have an illness, you are covered for medical care costs.

How much does Trawick International insurance cost?

Trawick tends to be similar in price to comparable plans for travelers under 60, but more quite a bit more expensive for older travelers. In general, I think there are better plans for the money.

Here are the most popular comparable plans that we’ll compare:

Trawick Safe Travels Voyager Trawick has a high medical limit here at $250,000. This is more than adequate travel medical coverage for most trips. I recommend at least $100,000 for international travel. This plan also has the option to upgrade with Cancel For Any Reason, but the hurricane coverage is not as good as the other plans here.

Travel Insured Worldwide Trip Protector This is a plan with medical limit of $100,000. This is an adequate amount of travel medical coverage for most trips. Travel Insured has better hurricane & weather coverage. This plan also has the option to upgrade with Cancel For Any Reason.

Seven Corners RoundTrip Choice Most coverage is similar, but this plan has emergency medical coverage up to $500,000. This is far higher than similar plans. Also has Cancel For Any Reason available

Now let’s look at pricing based on different types of travelers and trips:

Trip 1 This is a seven day trip, two travelers both aged 45, with a trip cost of $3,500

  • Trawick Safe Travels Voyager- $182
  • Travel Insured Worldwide Trip Protector- $224
  • Seven Corners RoundTrip Choice- $252

Here, Trawick is lower than the similar plans by roughly 20%. This is a good saving, and if the lower coverage is not an issue this is a good plan for younger travelers.

Trip 2 This is a seven day trip, a family of four (ages 45, 45, 12, 10) with a trip cost of $6,500

  • Trawick Safe Travels Voyager- $286
  • Seven Corners RoundTrip Choice- $438

In this case, Trawick is in the middle, about 24% more than Travel Insured. I would choose Travel Insured because they have better coverage for less money.

Trip 3 This is a 14-day trip, two travelers both aged 70, with a trip cost of $4,500

  • Trawick Safe Travels Voyager- $562
  • Travel Insured Worldwide Trip Protector- $422
  • Seven Corners RoundTrip Choice- $430

Finally, Trawick is more expensive by about 30%. Their plans are more expensive for older travelers, and I would recommend Travel Insured or Seven Corners.

Trawick International Plans

Safe Travels Explorer Just the necessities. Explorer is Trawick’s budget-friendly travel protection plan. This plan includes Trip Cancellation and Interruption, $50,000 coverage for Emergency Medical Expense as well as of $2,000 for potential accommodations/lodging expenses, lost baggage and many other essential benefits while you travel.

Safe Travels Explorer Plus The Explorer Plus plan features everything in the Explorer plan along with coverage for Pre-Existing Medical Conditions on plans purchased within 7 days of making your initial trip deposit. That’s the main difference between the two.

Safe Travels Journey The Journey plan includes all the benefits as the Explorer Plus with extended coverage and coverage for airline ticket exchange fees. This plan includes coverage for Pre-Existing Medical conditions when purchased prior to or within 14 days of making your deposit and $150,000 of Emergency Medical Coverage along with $500,000 of Emergency Evacuation coverage.

Safe Travels Voyager (Most Popular) The Safe Travels Voyager is designed for those who are looking for the highest available benefit limits to protect your trip. This plan covers $250,000 per person limit Primary Medical Coverage with coverage for Pre-Existing Medical conditions on plans purchased prior to or with final trip payment. Also offers the optional Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) provides reimbursement for 75% of the prepaid, non-refundable, forfeited payments you paid for your trip if you cancel your trip for any reason not otherwise covered by this policy.

Safe Travels First Class Trip Protection This plan has more “in between” coverage and pricing, with Secondary Medical Coverage of $150,000.

Safe Travels Single-Trip Trip Protection A similar plan with coverage in between the rest, $75,000 of Secondary Medical Coverage.

I am very pleased with the process of filing claims. I was getting sick while traveling in Peru in February 2024. I had to see the local doctor, received some medical treatment, and took some prescription *****. I also had to change my travel plan with an extra hotel stay and additional flight expenses. I called the claim number after came back home. The gentleman on the phone was very helpful to explain the process and emailed me the claim forms. I completed both medical and trip interruption claim forms. I emailed back the claim forms with the requested supporting documents. The claims were proved pretty quickly and I received reimbursement checks in the mail.

I have bought the travel insurance with Trawick International from Squaremouth website several times in my previous international trips. This is the first time that I have to make the claim. I am pretty happy with the process.

Easy to buy but hard to use. I was taken ill while in Costa Rica and had a hard time contacting anyone. My phone didn't have local service so I couldn't call back to the US. In the end, I used the doctor's phone. When I finally did, they kept telling me they couldn't locate my policy, but "don't worry - I'm sure we'll find it." Meanwhile, the clinic wanted to take me to hospital in an ambulance and wanted to know they would be reimbursed $3,000. Given the vague answers I was getting from your agent, I wasn't confident. In the end, I took a private car and flew back to the US (even thought I hadn't been treated and was in some pain) because I didn't have confidence in your service provider. First time I have ever tried to use Travel Insurance while actually abroad and not exactly impressed,

The policy was the best I could find given my age of 75, and preexisting atrial fibrillation condition, and also given the length of my stay in Asia, almost three months. I did visit a doctor in Thailand, for an eye infection, and the charge was under my deductible amount, so I am not claiming. I wish the deductible had been less than $250, which is quite high, I think. But I did have coverage, that was the main thing.

It was a great experience. The agent was knowledgeable and patient. The policy was comprehensive enough that I did not have to worry.

Policy's coverage was clearly stated. Website easy to use. When calling customer service for info or help, was always answered by a real person! Associates were friendly and knowledgeable and willing to help. No problems filling a claim and results were handled satisfactorily and within a reasonable timeframe.. Will definitely be using this company again. Highly recommend!

Hard to file a claim.

The representative at Squaremouth was very helpful in answering my questions about specific circumstances that the various insurances would cover, which helped me chose which one to pick.

Haven't received response from Trawick as of 4/1/24.

Would appreciate if you can help with a follow up. Thanks!

I understand once you purchase the insurance it is insurance, but we had paid for 2 people that ended up not being able to travel on this trip so we lost money, wish we could have been able to cancel their policy and get our money back for them.

I will never buy another product with Trawick or Nationwide again. We travel 3-5 times a year on big trips so I feel more comfortable being covered by insurance. I bought $977.26 worth of insurance for a recent cruise to see the northern lights. Upon review of my policy two weeks before our trip I noticed that the date was wrong and I called to change by one day one the beginning and one day on the end to cover the travel days. I was charged $72.81 to do this. This is ridiculous to charge a good customer this for 2 days of coverage. I noticed this on another trip I have booked for August and that provider charged me nothing for the two days. Good luck doing business like this.

Travel Insurance Types: Which One Is Right for You?

There are several types of travel insurance you'll want to evaluate before choosing the policy that's right for you. A few of the most popular types of travel insurance include:

COVID travel insurance Select insurance plans offer some or a combination of the following COVID-19-related protections: coverage for rapid or PCR testing; accommodations if you're required to quarantine during your trip if you test positive for coronavirus; health care; and trip cancellations due to you or a family member testing positive for COVID-19. Read more about the best COVID-19 travel insurance options .

Cancel for any reason insurance Cancel for any reason travel insurance works exactly how it sounds. This type of travel insurance lets you cancel your trip for any reason you want – even if your reason is that you simply decide you no longer want to go. Cancel for any reason travel insurance is typically an add-on you can purchase to go along with other types of travel insurance. For that reason, you will pay more to have this kind of coverage added to your policy.

Also note that this type of coverage typically only reimburses 50% to 80% of your nonrefundable prepaid travel expenses. You'll want to make sure you know exactly how much reimbursement you could qualify for before you invest in this type of policy. Compare the best cancel for any reason travel insurance options here .

International travel insurance Travel insurance is especially useful when traveling internationally, as it can provide medical coverage for emergencies (in some cases for COVID-19) when you're far from home. Depending which international travel insurance plan you choose, this type of travel insurance can also cover lost or delayed luggage, rental cars, travel interruptions or cancellations, and more.

Cheap travel insurance If you want travel insurance but don't want to spend a lot of money, there are plenty of cheap travel insurance options that will offer at least some protections (and peace of mind). These are typically called a company's basic or standard plan; many travel insurance companies even allow you to customize your coverage, spending as little or as much as you want. Explore your options for the cheapest travel insurance here .

Trip cancellation, interruption and delay insurance Trip cancellation coverage can help you get reimbursement for prepaid travel expenses, such as your airfare and cruise fare, if your trip is ultimately canceled for a covered reason. Trip interruption insurance, on the other hand, kicks in to reimburse you if your trip is derailed after it starts. For instance, if you arrived at your destination and became gravely ill, it would cover the cost if you had to cut your trip short.

Trip delay insurance can help you qualify for reimbursement of any unexpected expenses you incur (think: lodging, transportation and food) in the event your trip is delayed for reasons beyond your control, such as your flight being canceled and rebooked for the next day. You will want to save your receipts to substantiate your claim if you have this coverage.

Lost, damaged, delayed or stolen bags or personal belongings Coverage for lost or stolen bags can come in handy if your checked luggage is lost by your airline or your luggage is delayed so long that you have to buy clothing and toiletries for your trip. This type of coverage can kick in to cover the cost to replace lost or stolen items you brought on your trip. It can also provide coverage for the baggage itself. It's even possible that your travel insurance policy will pay for your flight home if damages are caused to your residence and your belongings while you're away, forcing you to return home immediately.

Travel medical insurance If you find yourself sick or injured while you are on vacation, emergency medical coverage can pay for your medical expenses. With that in mind, however, you will need to find out whether the travel medical insurance you buy is primary or secondary. Where a primary policy can be used right away to cover medical bills incurred while you travel, secondary coverage only provides reimbursement after you have exhausted other medical policies you have.

You will also need to know how the travel medical coverage you purchase deals with any preexisting conditions you have, including whether you will have any coverage for preexisting conditions at all. Read more about the best travel medical insurance plans .

Evacuation insurance Imagine you break your leg while on the side of a mountain in some far-flung land without quality health care. Not only would you need travel medical insurance coverage in that case, but you would also need coverage for the exorbitant expense involved in getting you off the side of a mountain and flying you home where you can receive appropriate medical care.

Evacuation coverage can come in handy if you need it, but you will want to make sure any coverage you buy comes with incredibly high limits. According to Squaremouth, an emergency evacuation can easily cost $25,000 in North America and up to $50,000 in Europe, so the site typically suggests customers buy policies with $50,000 to $100,000 in emergency evacuation coverage.

Cruise insurance Travel delays; missed connections, tours or excursions; and cruise ship disablement (when a ship encounters a mechanical issue and is unable to continue on in the journey) are just a few examples why cruise insurance can be a useful protection if you've booked a cruise vacation. Credit card travel insurance It is not uncommon to find credit cards that include trip cancellation and interruption coverage , trip delay insurance, lost or delayed baggage coverage, travel accident insurance, and more. Cards that offer this coverage include popular options like the Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card , the Chase Sapphire Preferred credit card and The Platinum Card from American Express .

Note that owning a credit card with travel insurance protection is not enough for your coverage to count: To take advantage of credit card travel insurance, you must pay for prepaid travel expenses like your airfare, hotel stay or cruise with that specific credit card. Also, note that credit cards with travel insurance have their own list of exclusions to watch out for. Many also require cardholders to pay an annual fee.

Frequently Asked Questions

The best time to buy travel insurance is normally within a few weeks of booking your trip since you may qualify for lower pricing if you book early. Keep in mind, some travel insurance providers allow you to purchase plans until the day before you depart.

Many times, you are given the option to purchase travel insurance when you book your airfare, accommodations or vacation package. Travel insurance and travel protection are frequently offered as add-ons for your trip, meaning you can pay for your vacation and some level of travel insurance at the same time.

However, many people choose to wait to buy travel insurance until after their entire vacation is booked and paid for. This helps travelers tally up all the underlying costs associated with a trip, and then choose their travel insurance provider and the level of coverage they want.

Figuring out where to buy travel insurance may be confusing but you can easily research and purchase travel insurance online these days. Some consumers prefer to shop around with a specific provider, such as Allianz or Travelex, but you can also shop and compare policies with a travel insurance platform. Popular options include:

  • TravelInsurance.com: TravelInsurance.com offers travel insurance options from more than a dozen vetted insurance providers. Users can read reviews on the various travel insurance providers to find out more about previous travelers' experiences with them. Squaremouth: With Squaremouth, you can enter your trip details and compare more than 90 travel insurance plans from 20-plus providers.
  • InsureMyTrip: InsureMyTrip works similarly, letting you shop around and compare plans from more than 20 travel insurance providers in one place. InsureMyTrip also offers several guarantees, including a Best Price Guarantee, a Best Plan Guarantee and a Money-Back Guarantee that promises a full refund if you decide you no longer need the plan you purchased.

When you need to file a travel insurance claim, you should plan on explaining to your provider what happened to your trip and why you think your policy applies. If you planned to go on a Caribbean cruise, but your husband fell gravely ill the night before you were set to depart, you would need to explain that situation to your travel insurance company. Information you should share with your provider includes the details of why you're making a claim, who was involved and the exact circumstances of your loss.

Documentation is important, and your travel insurance provider will ask for proof of what happened. Required documentation for travel insurance typically includes any proof of a delay, receipts, copies of medical bills and more.

Most travel insurance companies let you file a claim using an online form, but some also allow you to file a claim by phone or via fax. Some travel insurance providers, such as Allianz and Travel Insured International, offer their own mobile apps you can use to buy policies and upload information or documents that substantiate your claim. In any case, you will need to provide the company with proof of your claim and the circumstances that caused it.

If your claim is initially denied, you may also need to answer some questions or submit some additional information that can highlight why you do, in fact, qualify.

Whatever you do, be honest and forthcoming with all the information in your claim. Also, be willing to provide more information or answer any questions when asked.

Travel insurance claims typically take four to six weeks to process once you file with your insurance company. However, with various flight delays and cancellations due to things like extreme weather and pilot shortages, more travelers have begun purchasing travel insurance, encountering trip issues and having to submit claims. The higher volume of claims submitted has resulted in slower turnaround times at some insurance companies.

The longer you take to file your travel insurance claim after a loss, the longer you will be waiting for reimbursement. Also note that, with many travel insurance providers, there is a time limit on how long you can submit claims after a trip. For example, with Allianz Travel Insurance and Travelex Insurance Services, you have 90 days from the date of your loss to file a claim.

You may be able to expedite the claim if you provide all the required information upfront, whereas the process could drag on longer than it needs to if you delay filing a claim or the company has to follow up with you to get more information.

Travel insurance is never required, and only you can decide whether or not it's right for you. Check out Is Travel Insurance Worth It? to see some common situations where it does (and doesn't) make sense.
