How German Lutherans became Brazilians: A methodological essay

The article reviews earlier collaborative research about German immigrants to Brazil by using data from family genealogies (the reconstruction of family histories from parish register data). These data permit the preliminary testing of a methodology to establish indicators of the group's ethnic identity. There is need to understand the group's criteria for determining and receiving members and for making inclusion

A history of world Christianity as envisioned by the “Munich School of World Christianity” makes it necessary to look for new methods that are appropriate to these new perspectives. When cooperating with scholars from anthropology, sociology, and religious studies, the historian of Christianity is confronted with the central importance of taking into account small-scale realities and micro-level perspectives. In this article I present examples from the history of a group of German Protestant immigrants in Brazil, drawing on the concept of “historical anthropology” to highlight the culturally influenced character of all structures and actions in everyday circumstances and forms of life. I explore instances of “acculturation” in the lives of these “Brazilianized” Protestant immigrants and show how they, on the one hand, expressed themselves in their Brazilian context and, on the other hand, established their own form of Protestant Christianity in Brazil.

Ethnic congregations are often considered safe havens for immigrants. This is supported by a large body of literature showing that many religious congregations in diasporic contexts help immigrants maintain their ethnic group identity and cohesion, build social capital, and adapt more smoothly to life in an unfamiliar society. The role of ethnic congregations in the lives of immigrants is, however, complex and multifaceted, and some recent research suggests that, in some ways, these congregations may inhibit their adaptation to the larger society and arouse tensions among the very immigrant communities they intend to help. In light of these varying observations, we seek to explore the functions—and potential dysfunctions—that ethnic congregations have among Brazilians who have immigrated to central Texas. Using data drawn in 2013 from participant observation and16 in-depth interviews conducted in two Brazilian evangelical congregations, we find that respondents perceive that their congregations strengthen their feelings of attachment to Brazilian culture and language and foster the development of social capital within to the Brazilian immigrant community. At the same time, however, some respondents acknowledge that church members can become overly dependent on their congregations and isolated from the larger society, leaving them susceptible to potential exploitation at the hands of more established co-ethnics within the congregation.

This study is an exploration in the Jewish identity of young organized Brazilian Jews. Some remarks will be made about to the Brazilian environment before the presentation of the conceptual framework that oriented this study -- that proposed by Herman (1970). I will review the following aspects : some characteristics of the Brazilian society; ethnic studies in Brazil and several consequences of their prevalent assumptions; Jewish research in Brazil; attitudes towards Jews in Brazil; and finally some aspects of the Brazilian Jewish community and, in particular, its youth organisations.

Inserted in the processes of economic, political and cultural globalization, there is a crisis within traditional meaning-producing and identity-creating institutions, such as the state, family, school and traditional religions, going on in Brazil and in other Latin American countries. If in the 1930s being Brazilian and Catholic were considered two sides of the same national religious identity coin, which could be applied, mutatis mutandis, to other countries in the region, today Brazil is rapidly becoming a multi-cultural and multi-religious country. It remains the largest Catholic country, but is also already the largest Pentecostal and the largest Spiritualist country in the world. In addition, other religious minorities, such as African-Brazilian religions, Buddhists, Muslims and Jews increasingly occupy the public sphere. Parallel to this shift, there is a significant effort being put forth by many Brazilian and South American religious communities to expand on a global level, such as the Pentecostals, charismatic Catholics, Spiritualists and Afro-Brazilian communities. This presentation analyzes the causes and the data related to this religious and identity change and highlights some trends for the future.

Author(s): Schwartzman, Luisa Farah | Abstract: Studies of immigrant integration in Europe and North America generally assume that immigrants are less white and considered less “modern” than the nationals of the countries where they arrive. In this essay, my purpose is to examine what happens when we apply the idea of “immigrant integration” to European immigrants who arrived in Brazil at the end of the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century. These immigrants and their descendants have faced a contradiction between integrating into a national “imagined community,” constructed as “mixed-race,” and participating in local, national and global projects of (white) “modernity.” The paper explores how this contradiction was historically constructed in Brazil, how some Brazilians of European descent resolved it, and how we can think of the relationship between race, modernity, nationhood and immigrant integration from a more global perspective.
