Want a good central location? On a budget? Don’t like to share? Don’t care for fancy boutique this or heritage that? Old-school 75 Travellers Lodge on Lebuh Muntri offers decent no-frills clean and comfortable rooms in a friendly older style guesthouse, that at a pinch some fancy marketing department would label “retro”.

Freshly painted, bright and airy double rooms are all graced with windows for a bit of fresh air, although they don’t have much of an outlook. As well as a comfy bed with clean linen; good strong ceiling fans, wash basins and a mirror are all standard amenities and you can pay a bit extra for air-con, but the cool cement floors and high ceilings keep the rooms at a reasonable temperature.

Choose to share a bathroom or again, for more coin, keep it private. Only one style of single room is available—fan cooled with ensuite, but it’s very tight on space, and it’s worth the few extra ringgit to upgrade to double, even if you’re alone. If the purse is really tight, there’s a ten-bed mixed fan-cooled dorm.

Bathrooms both share and ensuite offer hot showers, but it’s in tiny, but very clean, combo toilet and shower cubicles—everything will get wet! Other than a very affordable sleep, the folks who run 75 Travellers Lodge have succeeded in creating a warm atmosphere and you will find guests hanging out at the tables and chairs at the front enjoying reasonably priced drinks, chatting and swapping stories and for a quieter spot, there’s a terrace to hang out on too.

75 Travellers Lodge won’t be hitting the pages of Conde Nast Traveler anytime soon, but its unpretentious charm has more appeal than some of the try too hard hipster joints about town. The owners also run the nearby Star Lodge and Western and Oriental Guesthouse, but here was by far the most charming.

You won’t find 75 Travellers Lodge on any booking sites, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll get a walk-in room as it has a loyal following of return guests, call ahead to check availability. For tad more style and space (and a bit more of a spend), larger airy old-shool style rooms are on offer at Hutton Lodge.

Hotel Review: 75 Traveller’s Lodge, Georgetown, Penang – Malaysia

I stayed at the 75 Traveller’s Lodge in Georgetown, Penang . This is one of those old-school guesthouses of Southeast Asia that isn’t listed on booking sites and doesn’t have a website. I walked in off the street and paid 42 MYR ($11.60 USD) for a private single room with a shared bathroom.

The guesthouse is well-run and kept in a clean and tidy condition. It looked like it had been recently painted as my room looked fresh. The private rooms have a window, sink, mirror, and ceiling fan. It’s looks basic but if you have stayed in guesthouses in Malaysia you are probably familiar with what a run-down guesthouse room looks like by comparison. This one is pretty well kept.

The shared bathroom was also clean and orderly, and is well ventilated with fresh air.

There was a decent wifi signal in my room and no breakfast is provided.

To book a room it’s best to walk in off the street in the morning as the rooms seem to fill by the afternoon. You can also try Star Lodge , which is part of the same hotel on the same street.

If you are coming from Thailand in a minivan and arrive in the late afternoon, I would book something online to ensure of a decent bed. Check out Agoda’s listing of hotels in Penang or read up on which area to stay in Penang .
