12 Virtual Walking Trails Around the World That You Can Experience Right Now (Video)

Be whisked away to the mountains of Switzerland or the rugged Oregon coastline.

Evie Carrick is a writer and editor who’s lived in five countries and visited well over 50. She now splits her time between Colorado and Paris, ensuring she doesn't have to live without skiing or L'As du Fallafel.

digital walking tours

In a matter of weeks, the terms shelter in place, self-isolation, and quarantine have become buzzwords, giving definition to many people’s new reality: staying home. Zoom happy hours have replaced post-work drinks and once-neglected home projects are finally getting finished.

But there are only so many Zoom calls to arrange and tasks around the house to complete. When your home begins to feel more like a cell and less like a refuge, it might be time to make an escape. And while you may not be able to hop in your car and head to the nearest state park, virtual walking routes can provide a mental escape from the norm. Plus, according to Psychology Today , “Studies suggest that viewing even an image of a tree or a forest canopy bolsters the parasympathetic division of the central nervous system that naturally induces calm.”

And in today’s world, an added sense of calm is essential.

These virtual walking routes and trails deliver new landscapes, fresh perspectives, and plenty of calm-inducing flora while transporting you all over the world. You can enjoy the view from your exercise bike or at-home treadmill, or cozy up on your couch and allow yourself to be whisked away to the mountains of Switzerland or the rugged Oregon coastline.

This virtual walking trail starts at Männlichen, then takes you on a beautiful and easy downhill walk to Kleine Scheidegg, a mountain pass between the Eiger and Lauberhorn mountain peaks. Along the way, enjoy meeting (albeit virtually) some Swiss cows before descending amidst stunning mountain views.

12. Juan de Fuca Trail in British Columbia, Canada

Up north in British Columbia, you can virtually experience the beautiful Juan de Fuca Trail on Vancouver Island. Located within Juan de Fuca Provincial Park , this virtual walking route takes you deep into the forest and along the coastline, with occasional views of the Olympic Mountains.

Best virtual tours that you can take without leaving home

Alina Bradford

Need to get out of the house and go on vacation, but finances, health, or other circumstances have you staying at home? Virtual tours are the next best thing. They allow you to travel to exotic locations, including space, without ever leaving home. Here are some of the best ways to take a staycation getaway using virtual tours.

Best virtual tour app for Android

Best virtual tour app for iphone, best virtual tours online, best virtual space tours, best virtual tours of us national parks, best way to take a random tour, best global virtual tour, best zoo virtual tours, best aquarium virtual tours, best fine art virtual tours, best history museum virtual tours, best virtual nature walks.

The Seven Wonders app allows you to travel to the seven wonders of the world from your phone. The app supports the use of Google Cardboard but you don’t have to use it. You can just hold your phone up to your face — as you move the phone, you’ll see a 360-degree view of whatever location you’re visiting.

  • People are returning the Vision Pro. Here are the best alternatives you can buy now
  • Apple’s XR headset could get one of the Mac’s best features
  • ‘Metaversities’ let you attend digital twins of real-world college campuses in VR

With the Sites in VR app, you can take tours around the world using a virtual reality headset or just your phone or iPad. You can choose from cities or countries to visit, or you can go inside famous landmarks, like the pyramids. There are even space panoramas for a little out-of-this-world entertainment.

AirPano is a free site that allows you to wander beautiful locations all over the world. The best features of these virtual tours are choosing to take a helicopter view over the landscape or a walking trail through the area. The site also has articles about the location you are visiting and allows visitors to leave comments. If you really like a tour, you can choose to buy it as a download.

Sometimes you just want to leave this planet behind. That’s where virtual space tours come in handy. The Exoplanet Travel Bureau , powered by NASA, is here for you. You can choose an exoplanet and travel around its alien surface. Of course, the planets are artist renderings, since we haven’t actually traveled there yet, but they’re fascinating just the same. NASA at Home has many more space-themed virtual and augmented reality tours, too.

The Hidden Worlds of the National Parks is a Google project that lets you explore five different U.S. parks, including Florida’s Dry Tortugas, Hawaiian volcanoes, the Kenai Fjords in Alaska, New Mexico’s Carlsbad Caverns, and Utah’s Bryce Canyon. Each tour starts with a little history lesson about the area, and then you can dive into the 360-degree landscape. There are also audio tour guides that help you along your journey, explaining what you’re looking at and a little of its history.

Sometimes you don’t know where you want to go, and that’s OK. The Random Street View generator (powered by Google Maps ) is the answer. It will take you on a virtual stroll down a random street somewhere in the world. Be careful, though. Exploring random locations is a bit addicting. One minute you may be virtually walking down a highway in Michigan, and then with a click, you could be in an alleyway in Romania. The best part is that you get to see places that other virtual tour sites and apps don’t offer.

With Google Earth , you can go anywhere on our planet, from your hometown to the other side of the earth. You can use the website to take your journey, or use the app together with VR equipment to enhance your experience. Other than the awesome street views and ability to travel just about anywhere, you can also enhance Google Earth with your own videos and photos of places you have been in person.

If you’re an animal lover, there are many great virtual zoo exhibits that you can visit from your home. The San Diego Live Cams , for example, let you watch live footage of a wide range of animals, from baboons to penguins. Some other great animal cams can be found at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo & Conservation Biology Institute , The Houston Zoo , and EarthCam .

There are plenty of ways to visit our fishy friends, too. The Monterey Bay Aquarium, The Georgia Aquarium, and The National Aquarium all have fantastic live webcams that allow you to watch sharks, jellyfish, stingrays, and much more.

When it comes to fine art, it’s hard to do better than a virtual tour of the Louvre . The website has a variety of tours you can take throughout the gallery, including The Galerie d’Apollon, Louvre’s Petite Galerie, and the east side of the Sully wing. When you’re finished at the Louvre, check out the virtual tours of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in South Korea , the Musée d’Orsay in Paris , and the Museu de Arte de São Paulo in Brazil .

There are also virtual tours that can take you back in time, sort of. You can see amazing exhibits of curiosities from the past, like dinosaurs, Egyptian relics, Stone Age tools, and more at The Natural History Museum in London ,  The Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History , and The British Museum .

Longing for a walk in the woods or a tour through habitats that rarely see a human? No problem. There are plenty of virtual tours to satisfy you. Conservation International, for example, has a 360-degree tour through the Amazon that is narrated by an indigenous guide. Other virtual hikes you might enjoy include a trip through the redwoods at Muir Woods National Park , a stroll through the Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve, and a tour of New Zealand’s Great Walks .

As rival Apple is rumored to be eyeing an entrance into the metaverse, Microsoft, an early proponent of mixed and augmented reality applications, is criticized for its blurry vision behind the company's own HoloLens strategy. While HoloLens notched big early wins, including scoring a U.S. Department of Defense contract, subsequent delays, project cancellations, and high-profile executive departures may have resulted in the death of the HoloLens 3. Still, despite a scathing profile by Business Insider, it appears that Microsoft remains, at least publicly, committed to its HoloLens endeavors for now. The company has gone on record to refute the publication's reporting that HoloLens 3 has been killed.

There are a number of factors that may be causing Microsoft to pivot from its early bet on HoloLens, but the Microsoft profile cited internal divisions and the lack of a unified strategy among the top reasons for concern. As a result of the chaos, it appears that the largest collateral damage to Microsoft's infighting is the cancellation of its next-generation HoloLens 3 hardware.

Actronika, a startup company known for its HD haptics technology has a futuristic new product. Expected to be on display at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January 2022 is Skinetic, a haptic vest that should make virtual reality experiences feel a lot more realistic.

Skinetic works much as you'd expect. The wearable vest makes VR feel more immersive by bringing life-like sensations and touch-like experiences to areas of the body like the chest when paired with a compatible headset. As reported by Business Wire, the technology "works with 20 patented vibrotactile voice-coil motors, capable of generating a wide range of vibrations that cover 100% of human vibrotactile perception."

It seems that virtual reality may be about to become even more real than ever before -- all thanks to a new VR headset. Pimax, a company that manufactures VR equipment, announced the upcoming release of a new 12K QLED VR headset that will feature technologies such as eye tracking, full-body tracking, and refresh rates of up to 200Hz. The headset, dubbed Pimax Reality 12K QLED, is part of the company's venture into the metaverse and a step toward bringing true realism to using VR.

During today's Pimax Frontier event, the company's representatives talked at length about the goals behind the product -- naturalness, self-awareness, and freedom. Pimax wants to bring these qualities into virtual reality and the metaverse, allowing people from all over the world to interact and explore virtual worlds together. While VR technology already allows for some of that to happen, Pimax wants to take it to the next level with its new invention -- the Reality 12K QLED VR headset.

Wandering Tours

Walking tours of your favorite cities delivered to your smartphone with a fast and easy-to-read web browser experience., how it works, what is wandering tours.

We are a couple of friends that create and publish digital walking tours better than any guide with customizable stops, fun facts, and places not in the guidebooks that tell the stories of how neighborhoods and cities came to be and what their futures hold through a simple, seamless website that lets you go at your own pace, no app required!

Where are your tours?

We are from mid-sized cities and so passionate about helping you explore the cities that have amazing stories but don't get celebrated - currently we are focused on Ohio, but expect to expand to Pennsylvania, Michigan, Indiana, and Kentucky by 2021.

Who are your tours for?

Anyone who can wander! In all seriousness, we think our tours are great for locals who want to spend an afternoon exploring a part of their city that they might not spend time in or for visitors who are looking to truly understand where they are. Our tours are a great family activity, awesome for team events, and can be an excellent gift for someone just settling into a new place.

How did you come up with the stops?

We are wanderers by passion and researchers by trade. Tours start when we think a neighborhood or area has interesting buildings, cool places, or a fun story. Then, we start researching, pulling the threads that help us understand what makes a place special and explain how it is and what it might become. Those get combined into stops and questions and facts that help tell that story in an order, and walking pattern, that makes sense for you, the explorer.

Why did you start Wandering Tours?

We were dissatisfied with the experiences our friends were having while traveling and after trying several online tour companies, were dissatisfied with their quality and delivery. We knew we could bring a simpler interface and better storytelling to life, thus, Wandering Tours was born.

Wandering Tours is dedicated to exploring the neighborhoods that define our cities by providing excellent, engaging, and enjoyable experiences to all who want to spend an afternoon wandering.

We provide the essential details, well chosen route, and interactive experience of a guided walking tour from the convenience of your phone. With each tour tailored to your preferences, Wandering Tours mixes the must-see sights with fun facts and interesting places not found in other tours.

Our motto is "look up," which may seem odd for an organization powered by smartphones. But, we believe that technology can create an incredible experience in the here and now, illuminating the stories of how these cities and neighborhoods rose, and what their futures hold.

We hope you join us to explore the world around you, and ever so often, look up, we promise you won't be disappointed by what you see.

Digital Walking Tours Enhance Your Sense of Place at Sea Ranch

January 24, 2018 by Donna Martinez Leave a Comment

Digital Walking Tours the New Do-it-Yourself Tour Trend

Digital walking tours provide you an immersive means to enhance your traveler experience and offer a deeper sense of place.

Now tech-savvy travelers can have information about their vacation called up at a click of an app. As the digital walking tours play on their mobile devices, travelers enjoy a more enhanced experience. It goes without saying, these do-it-yourself virtual tours are especially embraced by teens and millennials . They, of course, are used to having information conveniently and immediately available to them.

Digital Virtual Tours DeMystified

Digital virtual tours are simulations of an existing location. The tour is usually composed of a sequence of videos or still images. Likewise, it also uses other multimedia elements such as sound effects, music, narration, and text. Many of these tours also include mapping tools such as Google Maps .

People can get information and experience which may not otherwise be available to them, preview a location before an actual visit, and make more informed plans and selection.

They help close the expectation gap between what experiences you think a location may offer and what special discoveries you can personally experience .

Dog Day, Sea Ranch, digital virtual tours

They can be enjoyed in the comfort of your home’s favorite chair. Or better, they can be loaded up on your electronic devices such as tablet or smartphone and taken with you on your vacation.

digital virtue tours,Teen Friendly Vacation ,smartphones, Abalone Bay, wifi

With a click of an app your vacation experience is complemented with in-depth explanation and detail of what you see in front of you.

Digital virtue tours can also include videos that provide a sampling of what you too could experience at the location. They offer up a “Sense of Place”  as explained by Matt Landau of VRMB

Apps, Audio Downloads Enhance Sea Ranch’s Distinctive Sense of Place

Today’s traveler rarely leaves home without their smartphone and/or tablet and now there’s even more cause to have it ready for your Sea Ranch vacation . To enhance your experience while staying at Sea Ranch, we recommend our visiting digital nomads download these apps and audio tours before you set out to discover amazing Sea Ranch.

“PLACENOTES” ~ The Sea Ranch Digital Edition

Experience, explore, digital tour, Sea Ranch, Digital Walking Tours

Modern-day explorers will find   Placenotes,  a newly created digital guide our collection of Sea Ranch digital walking tours. In addition, this app is an easy means to access new layers of images and information about landscape and architecture, flora and fauna, culture and history. Placenotes was created and sold by the Charles Moore Foundation. It was developed as a travel guide to lead people to places that truly matter. It aspires to guide you.  Accordingly you are not lead to the everyday mundane, but rather to the places that move, inspire, and amuse us. It’s a guide to places that linger in our memories and imagination. Wonderfully digital, the P lacenotes App will soon be available for purchase for all of your mobile devices. It’s cost is $8.95.

The Sea Ranch Audio Walking Tour

Hear donlyn lyndon personally describe sea ranch.

One of the first digital walking tours developed for our community,  The Sea Ranch Audio Walking Tour  provides an introduction to the architecture and landscape of The Sea Ranch. As you walk along the trails it highlights the ideas and features that have made Sea Ranch Architecture world renowned. The audio walking tour allows you to explore and experience The Sea Ranch buildings on your own…walking in the field with a mobile device or at home.

You are guided to where the first Sea Ranch buildings were built. You then hear descriptions of the landscape that surrounded and how it has changed.

A Unique Opportunity

Notably, what makes the audio tour unique is its author and narrator, Donlyn Lyndon. Donlyn was one of the original architects. Through this self-guided audio tour he explains first hand what was intended in planning The Sea Ranch.  You hear from him the planning it took to create these first buildings. Lyndon comments, as well, on the evolution of the landscape during the subsequent fifty years.

Pair the Audio Tour with the Architecture Tour

It should be noted here that the audio tour guides you along the walking trails of the area. Similarly, like our other digital walking tours, this is not a house tour.  With this in mind, the audio tour does not include visits to the interiors of homes or condominiums.

Rather, the audio tour is a celebration of the larger landscape. The tour specifically examines the ways in which architecture and its placement can combine with landscape. This unique blending of building to Sea Ranch’s distinctive features creates a very distinctive sense of place.

Move Beyond Virtual to Face to Face Experience

However, if you are curious about the interiors of some of Sea Ranch’s iconic architectural gems, then we recommend you attend the unplugged    Sea Ranch Architecture Tour sponsored by the Soroptimists. This annual special event is scheduled the Saturday before Mother’s Day.  Docents are available at each house to point out highlights for you. Homes on the tour will also have the architect, designer, and/or builder there as well!

The best part of this experience is you can have a face to face discussion with the architect. What a great opportunity to  delve into Sea Ranch’s philosophy of living lightly on the land! Subsequently, you can ask about the nuances in his style and design. Then ask with the owners how that philosophy has translated to their homes.

After the tour head on over to the Gualala Art Center for their toast to Sonoma wines and local artists at the Wine Tasting & Silent Auction.

A Word to the Wise- Book Early!

In the light of the Architecture Tour’s popularity, you’d be wise to book your reservation at a Vacation Rental home NOW ! For this reason, you’ll find homes are limited if not available. Furthermore, be sure to get your tickets to the tour and Wine tasting event early before they’re gone too.

Failing an early booking, you’ll just have to visualize the tour on your app at home!

Need a Place to Stay? Why Not Abalone Bay!

Notably, Abalone Bay has been booked sense last year! Therefore, let us know now of your interest now for next year. We’ll be happy to hold reservation until then. In the meantime, download your digital walking tours and plan for your Sea Ranch vacation.

Historical marker for the New Bern Ave. corridor

New Bern Avenue and Edenton Street History Marker Tour

In the early 1990s, people in the Idlewild and College Park communities came together to document the contributions of African Americans who lived and worked along New Bern Avenue and Edenton Street. There are 16 granite makers in the right-of-way that denote historically significant buildings, cemeteries, churches, and universities that tell the story of Raleigh's rich history. Before construction begins on the Bus Rapid Transit project these markers will be removed and lovingly restored. Once the project is complete the historic markers will be returned.

About the Business

Crazy Dash is more than a walking tour, it's a wild sorta "outside the box" kind of guided Digital Adventure Game. All you need is a Smartphone and a sense of Craziness. These adventures take place in the cities you live or visit, and allow you to see familiar or new sites and have fun in a whole new way. When we say fun in a whole new way, we mean you might be kissing a parking meter - or dancing on a street corner - kinda fun. It's a blast... A true adventure to write home about. Whether you're on vacation with your family, out on a date, or just hanging with friends, be sure and put a Crazy Dash Adventure on the top of your list. The object of the game is to have a blast with your friends and/or family, explore the city, & learn a little. Each Dash has 8+ checkpoints. At each checkpoint you'll answer a question with the given clues or perform a Crazy Dash Task. Be prepared to perform crazy tasks, photograph yourself doing them and then send that "selfie" in to us so we can share! Form teams, race your friends, or just have an afternoon of fun with family or friends. Oh, and remember you're not alone; you'll have a guide just a call away, that can help you if you get stuck. …
