94 Isuzu Trek Safari needs more power!
- Add to quote
I have a 94 Isuzu Trek Safari 28ft rv. 4BD1T auto. A guess is it weighs about 10-12k by itself haven't weighed it yet, so with a trailer and Rover 17-19K. It does ok running down the road empty, as in it will do the speed limit of 65 or even 70mph. But I mostly use it to go to offroad places, pulling my Land Rover on a trailer, together the Rover and trailer weigh 7000lbs. With pulling this load the Isuzu will go 62mph on completely flat ground (all these figures going off a GPS). If I hit a hill and I mean even the slightest hill the kind of hill you wouldn't notice any other time, it will not do much over 55 and if it is an average hill you can get down to 45 or 35, if it is a real long steep hill it even gets down to 25mph. Im not asking to be able to run 80mph up hills pulling, but I just want to be able to at least run 65-70 on flat an not much lower than 55 on the hills. Am I asking to much of the 4BD1T? Am I asking to much of the automatic trans? I wish it was a manual, but idk if it is possible swap in this rv. I do not have an egt or boost guage right now. When I get them I want to turn the pump up a little, but with how much this thing weighs and how its shaped like a 11 foot tall 8 feet wide brick, im worried about it already having high egts pulling 7k. I worry the egts would be way higher if I turn this pump up to much. It is already intercooled, but would water/meth injection be worth looking into? What is max safe EGTs pre turbo? How hot max can it sit at for a long time, how hot can it get max for short times like climbing short hills or accelerating? I have looked at where to turn the pump up, I guess I just turn it up till the egts start getting to hot then back it down? Are you guys doing it by a quarter turn or less or more? I also think I might straight pipe it to help with egts and give a little more power. What do you folks think? I know this thing is way bigger beast than most of you have these engines in, but I figured you might give me an idea. Thanks.
Damn after reading, it says the intercooled ones are the D2T. That figures, like I don't have enough idi's already. I was all hopped up that it was direct injected. Guess I will have to check next time I see the engine.
I guess the first question is: What can your automatic gearbox take? The second question is: How much room do you have around the engine for turbo modification? With more boost to keep the EGT's down and more fuel your engine can deliver a lot more. But you need to make sure the gearbox can take it and you need to make sure your engine cooling is up to the task. Cooling loads will increase in proportion to power increases. Do you know which turbo you currently have and do you have room for boost and EGT gauges?
This is essentially a '94 NPR chassis with a motor home body. Jatco auto. I'll never understand why they didn't use the NRR chassis with the 6 cyl. They are nicely appointed. All of the performance mods you'll see listed here, including a larger turbo, will help you move it better.
In that case, Erik (Nexxussian) is playing almost exactly the same game with his NPR.
Im wondering if it could stand to have the pump turned up just a little. As it is, it does not smoke black at all under full throttle. It should smoke a little under full throttle, I would think. I think the same thing about the trans. I don't plan to try makeing a ton more power, but I don't think the trans really enjoys the weight I pull. Knock on wood it seems to do ok so far, besides being an auto. I will most likely put a trans temp guage the same time I put the other guages on. If it was my choice I would like to put a manual trans in it. Im just not sure which one I need. And how big of a pain it would be. My friend said the dash in it is exactly the same as in an NPR box truck he used to drive, so I figure stuff would swap ok. I have thought about a Cummins 6bt, but I really think it would be difficult, since I have no shop to work inside. I dont want to ruin this truck, and Im really considering getting rid of it and just building a gooseneck with a slide in on front to haul my rigs, but I need a 6bt for my dually at the moment.
Max fuelling needs to be set by EGT's with a probe in the exhaust manifold and reaching the centre of the gas stream. Smoke isn't a good indicator, nor is smoking good for your engine or your wallet (wasted fuel).
a manual swap would be more trouble than what it would be worth, as you would lose o.d. You would also need to change your rear end, which are steeper in a manual equipped truck. Erik has shown great gains in the performance of his truck without a huge investment. Where in Kansas?
With a 2wd truck chassis there's little stopping you from fitting the gearbox of your choice. Kungfoo, the Isuzu 5 speed manuals sold in the US aren't an overdrive box so highway gears are lacking. This is quite bizarre as the trucks sold in the rest of the world (like mine) got the same box but with overdrive inside.
Well I don't want to lose overdrive. This thing will not go over 50 without overdrive. I wish it had an sae pattern. Coog im in Kingman. Where are you at?
I am in Wichita. Any chance there is room for a 6 cylinder in this rig? It would be the bomb with a 6/Allison combo.
I think there is. But I don't really want to turn this thing into a project. I have a dozen or so of those already. Lol. Like I said a Cummins would make this a beast, but I don't have a place to do a swap on this rv. Im gonna be making a trip with it and the rover behind it here in a few weeks. I wont have anything done to it by then. Maybe the next trip I make with it I will at least have guages, the pump turned up just a little and straight pipe. I might do the exhaust before this trip if I find the time.
Which turbo do you have?
You could pull the 4 and use it in your Rover. A guy needs projects! I see prices all over the place for these Treks. There was on Wichita's CL list for half of what they list on eBay.
Yeah, I bet it was mine. my dad had it on there about six or so months ago. He had lots of people said they wanted it, but never came and looked. The ones that did come look at it couldnt come up with the money. I think he started at 10k then lowered to 8k then he said he was gonna lower it to 7k. Then I said if your gonna go that cheap I want it. Lets just say he gave me a super good deal on it. He has owned it for the last 8 or 9 years, it has been well maintained. The guy that had it before him was one of those people that keeps notes and receipts on everything since it was new. It has 94k miles on it now. That engine would be nice in the Rover, but it is getting a 6.2 Turbo or 6.5 Turbo Diesel. I dont think I could find the right trans to go behind it and dont want a divorced case. If I do find the right 6bt and nv4500 for the right price it is going in my 94 GMC dually. Once I do that I will need a slide in camper, then I wont need the RV. So im sure I wouldnt want to put it in the RV, unless I come up with two 6bts and a nice shop, oh and time. Lol.

I have to agree with Dougal; friends don't let friends do the 6.2 flu. We are all ready to give you better advice when you are ready.
I love 6.2s and 6.5s. I have them and I dont care what anyone says, I love them. My 6.2 or 6.5 in this will have more power than the Isuzu will dream of. Also I can get parts for it at any part store, and they are cheap and abundant. If I put the 4b in anything it will be my Solid axle 81 Isuzu P'up if the stock c223 Diesel ever gives up on life. If I can get an adapter for the lt230 for the Pup behind the 4b and 5spd that would be nice. Right now the plan is either the c223 stock 4x4 4spd with front output chopped off and a divorced dual toyota t-cases. Or if a trade with a friend goes through the c223 and a 2wd 5spd and divorced dual toy cases.

Kamaz FTL hauler registers NatCar brand
MOSCOW. Sept 4 (Interfax) - National Carrier JSC, the full truckload freight trucking company headed by former Globaltruck CEO Ilya Sattarov that Russian truck maker Kamaz founded this summer, applied to register the brand NatCar at the end of August, the registry of federal intellectual property service Rospatent showed.
The NatCar brand is also mentioned in the recruitment ads of National Carrier, which is actively looking for E-class drivers. It is offering working with this year's model Kamaz diesel trucks from the flagship K5 line and new dry goods (curtainsider) and refrigerated trailers.
National Carrier was founded on July 7 in Moscow with charter capital of 1 billion rubles, the Unified State Register of Legal Entities showed. The company registered two branches in early August, in Yekaterinburg and Elektrostal, Moscow Region. The company specializes in truck logistics and associated activities, including digitization processes.
A spokesman for National Carrier told Interfax earlier that the company plans to provide FTL trucking services using its own fleet, "as well as the resources of hired truckers." The company's fleet will initially consist of 400 semi-trailer trucks with a 50/50 ratio of curtainside to refrigerated trailers, and it plans to primarily operate on domestic routes, he said.
The company has preliminary agreements with major customers among marketplaces and retailers in the FMCG and DIY segments, the spokesman said. Strong demand for trucking services is expected toward the end of the year, so there is interest from customers, he said.
Kamaz marketing director Ashot Arutyunyan announced at the International Moscow Automotive Forum at the end of August that the truck maker was the principal investor in National Carrier. He did not comment on the new company's shareholder structure, but said it is a Kamaz startup.

The 1991 Safari Trek was the first year of production which used the Isuzu NPR truck chassis. This was a 3.9 Liter turbocharged four cylinder diesel engine with 126HP output mated to a four speed automatic Jatco transmission with overdrive. The Isuzu NPR provided 14mpg to 16mpg which was unheard of at the time for a Class A motorhome, though ...

I've had two Safari Treks. The first was a 1991 Isuzu powered 2830. That was a great machine (but a little under powered). We made two trips around the US, one trip to Alaska and one to Nova Scotia in that Trek. That Trek gave us a good consistent 12 - 14 mpg. We wanted a "real bed" so bought a 1997 Trek model 3330.
