Exterior of the San Sebastian Winery

San Sebastian Winery was founded in 1996 by Charles Cox. The Cox family name is synonymous with winemaking in Florida, particularly in Saint Augustine, where San Sebastian wines compete easily on the world stage. Located just a few blocks from the heart of historic downtown St. Augustine in one of Henry Flagler’s old East Coast Railway buildings, this winery has a very rich history.

Today, visitors may enjoy both guided tours and wine tastings, seven days a week (except for major holidays.)  During busy weekends and holidays, the winery offers self-guided tours enabling a more leisurely walking pace through the winery.

When touring the winery, visitors can taste a selection of San Sebastian wines along the way, and enjoy a short audio-visual presentation in the winery's upstairs theater. Those who tour the winery will discover the art of winemaking, from the choice of grapes to the features of the winery's 5,000-gallon stainless steel tanks where the wines are fermented and stored before bottling. The San Sebastian Winery tour is fun and informative for all ages.

Tours and Tastings: Mondays - Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Sundays from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The last tours and tastings will start prior to 5:00 p.m.

The gift shop at the San Sebastian Winery offers a wide selection of gifts and souvenirs such as wine, accessories for those who love wine, and gourmet foods. You can also purchase ready-made and made-to-order gift baskets.

San Sebastian Winery has a wine bar and restaurant called The Cellar Upstairs , located on the rooftop of the winery building. Open on Tuesday through Sunday, the wine bar and restaurant bar offers live music, San Sebastian wines, craft beer, and delectable food to delight palates.

San Sebastian Winery in St. Augustine is one of the premier wineries in the country, and a pioneer in their unique development of premium, sparkling, and dessert wines.

A visit to San Sebastian is the perfect springboard for exploring the many great wines in Northern Spain. From reds in Rioja to sparkling whites in nearby Getaria, one of the homelands of Txakoli, there is something for every palette. Just a day trip will allow access to one or more of the wine areas, with wineries often nestled in far flung corners of the rolling countryside, apparently lost in time. Book a professional tour and set aside a day to discover the region’s best tipples – here are three of the best San Sebastian winery tours.

Rioja Uncorked – Private Wineries Trip

Rioja is arguably the most famous wine region in Spain, producing wines that are often rich and full-bodied. This tour visits four premium wineries, for a total of 10 wine tastings, as well as visiting the medieval town of Laguardia to see its baroque churches. During the ten-hour private excursion a guide and driver will take you to three of Northern Spain’s regions – the mountainous forests of Euskadi, the flat dry fields of Castile, and the large expanses of vineyards on the gentle hills of Rioja – explaining the history and traditions in each. It’s fascinating stuff and there is even enough food during the pairings to negate the need for lunch. From €375.

The tour then visits a txakoli winery, with the chance to sample three local wines, all paired with pintxos featuring tuna, cheese, and salted anchovies from the village. The trip finishes with a visit to the pretty coastal town of Getaria, with alluring narrow streets adorned with medieval buildings and wooden balconies. The good news is you don’t have to walk back from there – the local bus will take you all the way to San Sebastian. From €150.

Getaria Txakoli Wine Tour with Hotel Pick-up from San Sebastian

Txakoli is one of the Basque region’s best known white wines. It is slightly sparkling and can be seen being copiously quaffed in almost every San Sebastian bar. This half-day tour takes you to two Txakoli-producing coastal towns, Getaria and Zarautz, with an in-depth look at what makes this wine so special. Visit vineyards and producers of Txakoli, sampling wines with pintxos and other local delicacies. 5 Incredible San Sebastian Wines to Order

Irene Krespo

  • Modified: 26/09/2023

The extent of most people’s Spanish wine knowledge consists of two famous reds: Ribera and Rioja. While there are many excellent varieties of each, it’s always good to try something different! There are dozens of spectacular lesser-known wines produced just a short distance from San Sebastian. Here are five of our favorite wines to order in San Sebastian so you can truly drink like a local!

Txacoli

Txakoli is the holy grail of wines to order in San Sebastian! This semi-sparkling, dry white wine is native to the Basque Country. In fact, it’s quite difficult to find anywhere else in Spain—or in the world! Luckily, while you’re here in San Sebastian, it’s quite easy to find. The best bars in the city all serve txakoli, making it the perfect way to wash down your tasty pintxos!

Some of the best txakoli hails from the nearby villages of Getaria and Zarautz, where you can take vineyard tours and learn all about how this unique wine gets its start. The coastal climate in these seaside towns is ideal for producing a perfect txakoli: fruity, dry, crisp and refreshing!

Laguardia Wine bakery

Rioja Alavesa

We know—we just said that there’s so much more to Spanish wine than Rioja. However, the variety of Rioja known as alavesa is one of the must-try wines to order in San Sebastian. Produced in the southern reaches of the Basque Country, these wines fall under the prestigious D.O. Calificada Rioja label. The main difference, though, lies in geography and the production process.

Because alavesa Riojas have their roots in grapes planted along the foot of the Sierra Toloño mountains, their taste is noticeably different from that of regular Riojas. After they grow, the grapes start the fermentation process while still whole (rather than being crushed and destemmed first, as is common in other Rioja regions). As a result, alavesas boast a fuller body, higher acidity and a soft, fruity flavor.

Basque Coast, Wine and Getaria

Navarra wine

Navarra Wine

Often eclipsed by its more popular neighbor, Rioja, the Navarra wine region is quickly making a name for itself in recent years. Winemaking here is an ancient tradition, one that its family-run bodegas continue proudly. Due to its proximity to the Basque Country, these are some of the most unique wines to order in San Sebastian.

In the past, Navarra was best known for its rosé wines. While these are an excellent choice, the region is gaining more recognition for its spectacular reds and whites as well. No matter which you choose, it will make the perfect accompaniment to your pintxos!

cava wine

Step aside, champagne! Cava, Spain’s contribution to the world of sparkling wine, is less expensive and just as delicious as its more popular French counterpart. It’s also one of the best wines to order in San Sebastian, especially if you’re toasting to a special occasion!

While 95 percent of Spain’s cava comes from Catalonia, there are still a number of other cava regions in the rest of the country. The Basque Country is one of Spain’s foremost producers of cava outside of Catalonia. Order a glass of locally produced bubbly and drink up!

Rueda

Rueda Verdejo

Last but certainly not least on our list of wines to order in San Sebastian, Rueda is a standout among Spanish whites. High quality verdejo grapes mature to perfection in the flat high plains of northern Castilla y León and later become some seriously fabulous wine.

Fresh, fruity, crisp and refreshing, Rueda Verdejo wines are perfect with many different foods (such as shellfish, fresh cheese, salads and more), or on their own as a standalone aperitif. It may not be the most popular Spanish wine, but this hidden gem will quickly become one of your new favorites from the first sip.

Craving more than just wine? We can’t blame you—you’re in San Sebastian, home to some of the best food in the world! Join us on our Ultimate Pintxos & Wine Tour to experience the best of both worlds: a curated selection of the best authentic pintxos San Sebastian has to offer, perfectly paired with the drinks locals love, including an outstanding selection of regional wines. Along the way, you’ll pick up invaluable insider info and tips for eating like a local—so you can make every meal count throughout your stay in San Sebastian.
