Best Season for Motorbike tour in Leh Ladakh

Riding a bike in Ladakh is possible throughout the year but the best months are from the end of May to the middle of September. There are two road routes to reach Leh, one from Srinagar that opens in mid-May and another is from Manali which opens later in the month. So, the road trips are only available during the fall and summer seasons.

Ladakh is notorious for having exceptionally low temperatures for almost the entire year. While the summers are lovely, the winters are quite harsh and brutal.

August will see you drenched in rain, since the Monsoon is in full swing this season, resulting in more treacherous river crossings. It will be too chilly to ride motorcycles to Ladakh after September, with the possibility of snow and black ice.

In that scenario, the ideal time to visit Ladakh is undoubted during the summer and autumn.

Permits and Entrance

Both international and domestic travelers must obtain a tourist permit to visit Ladakh. The permit is referred to as Inner Line Permit (ILP) for the Indians and when delivered to the foreigners, it is known as Protected Area Permit (PAP).

Note that the permit is included in the package cost and we, Himalayan Trekkers will obtain the permit on your behalf.

After having an early breakfast, check out from the hotel and hit the road. Initially, we ride through the plains in the State of Punjab and after riding for a few hours, we enter the State of Himachal Pradesh, also known as the ‘Land of the Gods.’ We will pass through the towns of Bilaspur and Mandi. Today, we are going to ride towards Jispa on the much-celebrated Manali-Leh Highway. Leaving early is pivotal as we need to cross the mighty Rohtang Pass (3978m) early in the day, before it gets too crowded. After crossing Rohtang, the landscape changes drastically as we enter the Lahaul and Spiti District. The lush green grasslands disappear and the barren slopes of the cold dessert take over. We continue the ride towards Jispa crossing the quaint mountain towns of Sissu and Keylong. Arrive at the destination early in the evening and have an adventurous overnight stay in tents. Day 04: Jispa to Sarchu(4290m) | 90km      Grade/Duration - Difficult/Approx. 6 Hours Altitude Gain - 1090m Highlights - Deepak Tal, Baralacha La, Riding along Tsarap River

Keep yourself completely hydrated by drinking a tonne of water as we are going to spend the night at above 4000mt altitude. Today’s ride is one of the shortest rides of the expedition but the adrenaline level remains high as the terrain is full of adventure. After crossing Darcha, keep riding on the Manali-Leh Highway towards Deepak Tal. The road from here starts to ascend steeply towards the treacherous Baralacha Pass(4890m), negotiating Zing Zing Bar and crossing the stunning emerald lake, known as Suraj Tal. Just after crossing Baralacha, halt for some time and have some well-deserved lunch near Bharatpur. We continue our ride to Sarchu on the same road, although the terrain gets changed quite a bit along the way and Tsarap River is visible on the left side carving and raging through the mountains. Arrive in Sarchu later in the day and be prepared for a rather uncomfortable overnight stay in a tent. Day 05: Sarchu to Leh(3500m) | 250km

Grade/Duration - Difficult/Approx. 8 Hours Altitude Loss - 1090m Highlights - Gata loops, Nakee La, Lachung La, Morey Plains, Tanglang La, Riding along Indus River

Start riding after an early breakfast as today’s going to be a long but exciting day of riding. Water-Crossings are a common sight on the road while riding to Leh and the ideal time to cross them is early in the day. Just after leaving Sarchu, we start to ascend towards Nakee La(4769m), crossing the zig-zag Gata Loops which is a series of 21 hairpin bends within a span of just 7km. The descent from Nakee La is barely even finished and the ascent towards another high pass, Lachung La(5059m) begins. The descent from Lachung La brings us to the town of Pang(4600m) where we halt for Lunch. The landscape starts to change after crossing Pang and the plateau of Morey Plains starts and stretches for 45km. Closer to the end of the plains, we start climbing the Tanglang La(5328m), the highest motorable pass on the Manali-Leh Highway. After crossing the 3rd high pass of the day, continue riding towards Leh along the mighty Indus River on the left side. Reach Leh in the evening and relax in the hotel. Day 06: Rest Day in Leh Replenish your energies with a healthy breakfast and enjoy a relaxing day in Leh. The first half of the day is saved for a regular check-up of the bikes and the rest of the day can be spent visiting a few sightseeing places in and around the city. Stop by the Leh Palace and enjoy the splendid panoramic views of the Stok Kangri mountain range from the terrace. You may also choose to visit the Shanti Stupa and the local market to indulge in some shopping and try out the Ladakhi cuisine at the local eateries. Spend the night at the hotel. Day 07: Leh to Nubra (3048m) | 160km      Grade/Duration - Difficult/Approx. 7 Hours Altitude Loss - 452m Highlights - Khardung La, Diskit Monastery

After a rather relaxed day in Leh, we continue our expedition and start riding towards Nubra Valley through what’s considered the highest motorable road in the world i.e. Khardung La(5359m). The road towards the pass is well paved and tarred till the checkpoint near South Pullu and after crossing the checkpoint, the road starts to get slushy with loose rocks on one side. Get yourself clicked after reaching Khardung La and hit the road quickly as it is not safe to spend much time on top of the pass due to the high altitude and thin air. We stop for a quick lunch after climbing down from the pass and then continue our journey. After riding for another couple of hours, we make a brief stop to visit the 32m high Maitreya Buddha statue in Diskit Monastery. Our arrival in the valley will be welcomed by the white sand dunes and the sightings of the double-hump Bactrian camels grazing. Stay overnight at the hotel/campsite. Day 08: Nubra to Pangong(4250m) | 260km      Grade/Duration - Difficult/Approx. 8 Hours Altitude Gain -1202m Highlights - Riding along Shyok River, Water Crossings

After having breakfast, we start riding towards the most photographed destination in Ladakh, Pangong Lake. Despite the fact that we are not going to cross any high pass today, the ride should be quite interesting as we ride on the much less traveled road via Shyok. Most of our ride is going to be along the beautiful Shyok River and through the villages like Agham, Shyok, Durbuk, and Tangste. The road remains slushy along with some exciting water crossings and rocky terrain so being cautious is important. After crossing Durbuk, the last stretch of the ride is going to be along the lake. From the very first glimpse, the lake leaves an everlasting impression on the visitors. Get yourself photographed and just admire the wonder that is this shimmering blue lake. Overnight stay in tents.  Day 09: Pangong to Leh(3500m) | 150km      Grade/Duration - Moderate/Approx. 5 Hours Altitude Loss - 750m Highlights - Chang La, Druk White Lotus School

Wake up to an enchanting sunrise over Pangong Tso and recommence your Ladakh expedition. Today we are going to ride the same route that we rode yesterday and after crossing Durbuk, we will start climbing the third highest motorable pass in the world, Chang La(5360m). After crossing Chang La, we halt for Lunch. After eating, we start our journey to Lah via Karu from where we start riding on the Manali-Leh Highway. Just before reaching Leh, we are going to pass through the Thiksey monastery and the popular Druk White Lotus School. There will be a short halt to explore the monastery and take some pictures. After riding for approximately an hour, we will arrive in Leh for the second time during the expedition. Stay Overnight in a hotel. Day 10: Leh to Kargil(2676m) | 220km      Grade/Duration - Moderate/Approx. 6 Hours Altitude Loss - 824m Highlights - Fotu La, Namika La, Lamayuru Monastery

The ride from Leh to Kargil takes relatively less time as the roads are in pretty decent condition. We bid adieu to Leh and follow the mighty Indus River towards Kargil on the Leh-Srinagar Highway. The landscape is mesmerizing all along the way as we ride through a spectacular moonscape to reach Lamayuru, which is home to the highest located monastery in the region. Just after Lamayuru, we start the gradual climb towards the Fotu La(4108m) and after climbing down the pass we start the climb towards another high pass which is Namika La(3700m). Both of these passes are in the Zanskar range and take us into the Musbekh Valley. We pass through multiple picturesque villages en route to Kargil. Stay overnight. Day 11: Kargil to Srinagar(1585m) | 202km      Grade/Duration - Difficult/Approx. 7 Hours Altitude Loss - 1091m Highlights - Dras War Memorial, Zoji La

Wake up the chilly Himalayan air and get ready for what is going to be one of the most incredible riding experiences. We check out of our accommodation and start riding towards the Kashmir Valley via Dras, which is regarded as the second coldest inhabited place on earth. Just before reaching Dras, we take a short break at the Dras War Memorial. After Dras, we start riding uphill towards Zoji La(3528m) and the views from the top are just indescribably beautiful. After crossing the pass we enter the breathtaking valley of Sonamarg which is a major tourist destination. Another couple of hours of riding through the valley take us to Srinagar. Stay overnight in a houseboat/hotel. Day 12: Srinagar to Pathankot (332m) | 330km      Grade/Duration - Easy/Approx. 10 Hours Altitude Loss - 1253m Highlights - Riding down Himalayas, Jawahar Tunnel, Syama Tunnel

Today’s ride is going to take us through the stunning valleys of Kashmir to the plains of Pathankot in Punjab. Although the distance is rather long, the riding pace should be quite swift as we will be climbing down and the road conditions are pretty decent. On the way to Pathankot, we are going to pass through two of the biggest tunnels in the region i.e. Jawahar Tunnel(2.85km) and Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee Tunnel(9.2km). Arrive at the hotel and have a good night of sleep as tomorrow is also going to be a long day of riding. Day 13: Pathankot to Delhi (216m) | 485km      Grade/Duration - Easy/Approx. 11 Hours Altitude Loss - 116m Highlights - Lush Green landscape throughout

Today marks the last day of this once in a lifetime adventure. We need to start as early as possible as the distance to be covered today is the longest on this 13-day expedition. The journey should be pretty uneventful as we are going to be riding on wide tarmac roads through the plains of Punjab and Haryana. Arrive in the capital by late evening and reach the very place where it all started from. Get photographed with the entire gang one last time on this epic voyage and bid farewell to your motorcycle and your fellow riders. Trip Ends.

FAQs for Leh Ladakh Bike Tours:

1. What are the different routes to reach Leh?  Leh is accessible by road essentially from two different regions i.e. Kashmir Valley in west and Himachal in south. To get the best Ladakhi experience, one should enter from  Manali and exit in Srinagar or vice versa.   2. What is the ideal duration for a Ladakh bike trip? A bona fide Ladakh bike trip takes a minimum of 11 days if you want to experience all that this remote cold deserted region has to offer. There’s also an option of doing a Ladakh bike trip in 5-6 days if you fly in/out of Leh and cover places such as Nubra and Pangong. Although, flying in/out implies that you miss the adventures that the Manali-Leh Highway and the Srinagar-Leh Highway offer. 3. What is the ideal season to visit Ladakh? The open season for Ladakh is between June to September if you want to ride across all the high altitude passes such as Rohtang La, Baralacha La and Khardung La. 4. What type of clothing/gear is required for a Ladakh bike trip? Carrying the right kind of clothing is extremely important as you encounter all sorts of difficult weather/terrains ranging from humidity to biting cold and water crossings to snow-covered passes. The idea is to keep you warm and dry. Full body thermals along with a jacket are absolute necessities. A rain suit along with high ankle waterproof shoes/gumboots are to be carried. About the riding equipment, elbow guards and knee pads provide much-required safety apart from the helmet. 5. What are the must-see places during a Ladakh bike trip? Rohtang La, Baralacha La, Leh, Khardung La, Nubra Valley, Turtuk, Pangong Tso, Chang La, Tso Moriri, Kargil, Batalik, Zoji La, Srinagar. 6. What type of motorcycle is suited for Ladakh? The terrain on a Ladakh bike trip changes drastically in different locations. There should be enough power in the engine to manoeuvre through high passes and terrains such as slush, snow and even water crossings. Although Adventure Motorcycles are ideal, any motorcycle having a 200cc engine or above should do the job.  7. How good is the tourist infrastructure in Ladakh? Biking in Ladakh has become one of the most popular road trips in the world and that’s why the tourist infrastructure gets better every year. There are plenty of options available for accommodation/food throughout the entire biking circuit. Mobile reception is available only in the major towns so be prepared to be off the grid for some time.

Reviews for The Dream Ride Motor Bike Expedition to Ladakh

img

Awesome experience!

Go for it guys! It is the best possible choice if you are looking for bike trip to Ladakh. Had an awesome time with the group.

Value for money, food was delicious, and the team was excellent in handling the member and the bikes. No issues faced at all. Thanks for the adventure folks!

I travelled all the way from Kolkata just to experience the beauty of Ladakh in most adventurous way possible and it proved to be worth all the effort I made. Everything was perfect in terms of service and food.

2500 kms plus in 13 days of this Motorbike Expedition to Ladakh. Oh God, what an experience! I will never forget this ride. But you know what was the best part about this bike trip to Ladakh? The ride operators were so cool! and so approachable! The mechanics were very knowledgeable. The bikes performed well. And we rode them on such diverse kinds of roads so it was amazing that not even one broke down midway. Even while off-roading and river crossing, the whole thing was so much fun!!! I would do it again and again each year. Thanks, Adventure Nation for making this possible!

A bike trip to Ladakh is not the easiest of things to accomplish but all its difficulty fades away in the face of how satisfying it is when you finish the whole thing and not just that...even while you're on it, even while you're riding all the way to Ladakh you're feeling amazing no matter how hard the terrain looks like. And then there are particular moments in the bike trip that make you feel extra spectacular, especially camping in Nubra and looking at Pangong lake. Waking up to a sunrise at Pangong Tso is one of the best visuals to feast your eyes on! Thanks for this experience, Adventure Nation.

The most important part of a bike trip to anywhere is how much you can rely on the bikes. Because I have been on many bike trips before and twice to Ladakh, if your bike is giving you problems even after the test ride and getting it initially checked, then the trip is going to be tiring. That's why I wanted to make sure I go with the best guys. I booked this trek through Adventure Nation for a departure in August. Adventure Nation put us with the best bike trip operators in the game, thanks so much! Whole trip was so tension-free, thanks to that. The operators have been doing it for the longest time so they have an idea of what they are trying to do here! Thanks again!!!

My bike trip to Ladakh was my bachelor's trip as a last trip with the boys right before my wedding. To say the least, it was so good and so refreshing, it was the best thing I could've asked for. I LOVED everything about it. The rental bikes were great and in great shape to be driven down bumpy roads or good roads or river bed roads or off-roading altogether. And I had all these experiences on this trip! This one was such a delight, by the end we were already making plans to revisit. Thanks so much Adventure Nation for making this so special!

Almost a lifelong dream, this biking trip was so long due. Honestly, it will stay fresh in my memories for a long time from now. Loved the people that went with us. Almost ten of us were there. Out of which three were my friends who I had planned this trip with. Man, thanks for the amazing service. The bikes were in great shape and the food and the staying arrangement was also taken care of in the best way possible. This is why I chose you, Adventure Nation.

This is my first time on a biking trip but second time with Adventure Nation. Last time I went to Hampta pass trek. Had amazing fun there as well. This time it was a blast! It was so much fun with all the people including the staff that was with us to look after the bikes and our food and accommodations. I am still so excited. Never had a better experience.

We covered close to 2500 kms on our bike tour to Ladakh. The route we were given was great, because it covered most of the picturesque trails that we were hoping to ride through. We also camped along side Pangong Tso lake, which was definitely the best campsite. Remember to pack light because you will not need as much clothes as you will need biking gear and other necessary stuff. Also, get some experience of long bike rides before you do this because it will tire you a little sometimes. But we always stuck to the plan till the end!

Take the ride of your life but plan adequately before you decide to go. Better to book through an agency like Adventure Nation, because we were given a detailed itinerary and full mechanical support throughout. And you don't have to carry extra stuff like camping materials and all if you go with them. Also if you are going solo it is safer to go with these guys because you will definitely find some rider friends. Amazing trip. Ladakh is a beauty obviously, and the winds that touch you when you ride through it will give you a feeling out of this world.

I have made two trips to Ladakh before this. Once was on a vacation, and the other time was a biking trip. This time I booked through Adventure Nation along with two of my friends. What a fun time. Had amazing time there. The itinerary was great and we did not have to look around for accommodation and meals as it was all taken care of. Amazing! Thanks for the time.

Parts of the route – up to entire day’s rides – are unpaved. In addition to good natural tracks, there are also tracks that were once paved and where the asphalt has crumbled. These are marked by potholes and bumps. Longer passages can be covered with sand or pebbles. The unpaved/paved ratio is around 20/80.

Most of the route is on good, paved roads. Two-lane roads alternate with narrow, single-lane mountain roads. Riders should be comfortable with hairpin bends and narrow, winding roads. Rough surfaces, potholes and the occasional unpaved road shouldn’t be a problem.

The Three Lakes of Ladakh Motorcycle Tour Itinerary

Day 1: flight to leh* and acclimatization.

Leh, the former capital of the Himalayan kingdom of Ladakh, is located at an altitude of 3,524 meters in a broad valley surrounded by the tall mountain ranges of the Himalayas. The city was closely linked to Tibet, China and India via an important historical trade route along the Indus Valley. In addition to foodstuffs such as salt, precious goods such as brocades, cashmere wool, silk and indigo were traded. The mighty old royal palace built around 1600, which overlooks Leh and is open to the public, remains an impressive testimony to the former might of the kingdom. The spectacular view on the flight to Leh is already a highlight at the start of the tour. In Leh, a taxi driver from Hotel Bijoo will meet you at the airport with a sign. After the transfer to our simple but charming and centrally located tour hotel, you’ll have plenty of time to relax and acclimatize. Our guide will meet you at the hotel. Later, we’ll explore the area on a walk to the Shanti Stupa (pagoda), and there will be a delicious welcome dinner in the hotel garden in the evening.

*Arrival: Best to arrive at Delhi International Airport before 02:30 a.m. am on tour day 01. From here we continue with the domestic flight to Leh at around 07:00 a.m.

Arrival in Leh

Day 2: Warm-up day tour – the Hemis and Tikkse Monasteries

Our first excursion with our Royal Enfield motorcycles takes us to two of Ladakh’s most famous monasteries, Hemis and Tikkse, in the upper Indus Valley. We’ll get to know the bikes on a warm-up run and enjoy the beautiful views. Hemis Monastery was founded in the tenth century and is closely associated with the Yogi Naropa, founder of the esoteric Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism.

Afterwards, we’ll ride back to Leh for the night. Dinner will be served in the beer garden of a local restaurant.

Distance covered: approx. 90 km

Day 3: Tour Start to Tingmosgang

Kick off the Ladakh motorcycle tour with a scenic ride into the western Indus Valley. Discover the ancient ruins and temples of the Basgo Royal Palace and the majestic Serpent Buddha statue at Likir Monastery. Take on the winding mountain roads with your Enfields and ascend to the village of Yang Tang, continuing over a small, unnamed mountain pass to Hemis Supachen, known for its sacred juniper forest. The awe-inspiring views of the narrow gorge, towering sandstone walls, and deep drops will make for a memorable first day of riding.

The first day of the journey is already spectacular! In the afternoon, we arrive at an idyllic Tibetan village where we stay at a beautiful boutique hotel. The hotel is owned by a local family who also resides there and has built everything in the Tibetan style. The garden with a small stream invites you to relax. For those who still have energy, they can visit the temple overlooking the village on foot.

Distance covered: approx. 130 km

Snake Buddha statue at Likir Monastery

Day 4: Exploring the Western Indus Valley & Aryan Culture

Embark on a thrilling ride along the Indus River deep into the western region. Wind through wild, winding roads and cross the first high pass as we leave the main road and venture into the remote hinterland. Soon, we’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the Aryan Valley, dotted with small villages and farmsteads. The Aryans of Ladakh are a unique people, with distinct physical characteristics, social customs, cultural traditions, and language. They rely on the land, subsist on the milk and meat of goats and sheep, and follow a solar calendar for their festivals and agricultural activities.

Some scholars believe that the Aryan, also known as Brokpas, were part of Alexander’s army and have been living in the region for over 2,000 years. With a population of only about 4,000, this tribe is considered “endangered” and their numbers are dwindling. Spend the night in a resort-style camp among the locals, immersing in their culture.

Distance covered: approx. 180 km

Day 5: Conquer the Namika & Fotu La Passes

As we set off, we soon reach the towering ruins of Chitkan Fortress, a former royal residence with nine levels. Enjoy breathtaking views of the valley and our winding mountain road from here. We’ll then wind our way through countless curves to the small Namika Pass (3,700m) before continuing into the Kanji Valley and a special village surprise awaits us at the end of the newly-built road. Next, tackle the never-ending switchbacks of the Fatu La Pass, reaching over 4,000 meters high. On the descent, visit the awe-inspiring Lamayuru Monastery, perched majestically on a rock above the surrounding area and a spectacular landmark of Ladakh.

The “eternal” monastery sits at 3,500 meters and serves as a learning center for 150 resident monks. We continue to descend drive along the mighty Indus River towards the oasis of Alchi, located on the banks of the Indus River at an altitude of 3,200 meters. Here, we stay at a comfortable guesthouse with an apricot garden that reflects the local architectural style. Only a few steps away from the guesthouse is the oldest monastery in Ladakh, which now houses a cultural history museum with beautiful temple paintings. We will have dinner in the garden restaurant.

Across the water to Chilling

The road in the airy heights of Zanskar is, in the truest sense of the word, breathtaking and is also known as the “Roof of the World”. We follow the mighty Zanskar River deep into the gorge. In the village oasis of Chilling, we have time to enjoy the idyll. Afterwards, we take a small adventure trail to a secluded monastery nearby. In the vast area of Zanskar, only a few thousand people live, the region is only accessible seven months a year. In the afternoon, we return to Leh and relax in the garden of our hotel. Dinner in a rooftop restaurant with views of the king’s palace and the old town.

Once we’ve conquered the pass, it’s a wild ride down into the wide desert of the Nubra Valley.

Trust us, the descent from 2,600 meters is worth it. Our destination for the day is the oasis of Hunder, where we’ll be staying in a lush garden hotel. The road gets narrower as we follow the Shyok River and reach the northernmost village in India. The views of the Karakorum mountain range in Pakistan are not to be missed. We’ll also visit the ancient and picturesque Diskit Monastery with its giant Buddha statue. After that, we’ll have the option to take a camel ride in the Hunder sand dunes or simply relax in the oasis. Dinner will be served in the relaxing garden of our hotel.

Day 12: The World´s Highest Pass: Umling La near Tibet

Embark on a day trip to Umling La Pass, the pinnacle of high-altitude riding. Standing at 5,883 meters, Umling La holds the title of the highest motorable pass in the world, surpassing the renowned Khardung La. The pass was only recently opened and has been accessible to foreigners since 2024, due to its proximity to the Tibet border, which previously made visits impossible. Before setting our sights on Umling La, we navigate the numerous hairpin bends of Photi La (5,525m), where breathtaking panoramas unfold, offering a mesmerizing glimpse into the mountainous expanse between Ladakh and Tibet. After today’s adventure, we circle back to Hanle village via a different road, where we can relax and unwind.

Distance covered: approx. 1 3 0 km

Day 13: Glamping at the vast Lake Moriri

We ride through the land of the Tibetan nomads, and today promises yet another adventure. Gradually, the magically turquoise Tso Moriri Lake comes into view, where we will stay in a simple yet charming seasonal tent camp in the village of Korzok. We enjoy the view over the lake and have the opportunity to visit the ancient monastery nearby or hike to the nomadic tent settlements in the wild high valley just behind Korzok. The bravest among us can take a dip in the cool waters of Tso Moriri Lake. We relish the landscape and atmosphere in our cozy camp with a lake view, and a typical Ladakhi dinner awaits us in the restaurant. Tso Moriri, which in the local language simply means “Mountain Lake,” is situated at an altitude of 4,522 meters and is not only the largest high-altitude lake in Ladakh but, at 105 square kilometers, also the largest in all of India. Its shores are home to Tibetan gazelles, lynxes, wild Tibetan donkeys (Kiang), Tibetan wolves, and snow leopards.

Day 14: Riding into the Sunset: The Final Leg of our Adventure

The beginning of today’s stage is best described as a journey on dust tracks through desert valleys. We pass by steaming sulfur springs, cross the wind-whipped Pologonka Pass at 4,900 meters, and drive along the Tso Kar Salt Lake, a nature reserve home to shy and rare birds and rodents, heading towards Leh. The two six-thousanders, Thugje (6,050m) and Gursan (6,370m), dominate the expansive lake panorama landscape. Then we cross the “last” five-thousander, the Tanglang La Pass (5,340 meters). After a gentle ascent, we continue spectacularly through a wild rock gorge nearly 2,000 meters down to the Indus River. Then we reach Leh and thus our comfortable hotel where we will enjoy our goodbye dinner.

Questions & Answers

  • A: Ladakh 3 Lakes Tour
  • B: India General

Can I get altitude sickness?

The Ladakh tour starts in Leh at the altitude of 3,500 meters, so a slow acclimatization is important. After two nights in Leh, we’ll move on to two nights in Alchi on the western Indus at an altitude of around 3,000 meters. Based on our experience, everybody should be well-acclimatized by then and the minor discomfort (dizziness, headache, insomnia) associated with high altitudes a thing of the past. So, don’t worry! We have had hardly any cases of “real” altitude sickness on our Ladakh motorcycle tours in the last ten years.

That said, everyone reacts differently to high altitudes. We therefore recommend that you discuss the use of acetazolamide, a medication to prevent altitude sickness, with your GP.

Will there be any water crossings?

There is definitely one water crossing on the way from Nubra Valley to Lake Pangong in Ladakh. Ultimately, the situation is different after every winter, so you should be prepared to ford more than one river. Our team will be happy to help and take over your bike if you don’t feel comfortable with the crossing.

Do I need a visa for India?

Visitors to India need a tourist visa, which you must obtain in advance. Visas are not issued on arrival. Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond the period of your stay. The e-Tourist Visa costs around 20 to 80 euros and you can apply for it online. Important note: The terms for the e-Tourist Visa can be found here: https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/visa/tvoa.html The visa application itself can be found here: https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/visa/info1.jsp

What do I need to bring along for a motorcycle tour?

You will definitely want to bring your riding suit with protectors and a helmet. You will also need motorcycle boots or lighter riding shoes and gloves. While your gear should be breathable in hot climates, you need to be ready for anything at high altitudes and in the Himalayas. We recommend winter gloves, warm socks, liners for jackets and trousers, a scarf and face protection. Rain gear is a good idea if your riding suit is not waterproof. Please note that we do not hire out clothing. We believe that your own riding gear will fit best and thus give you the best protection. If you forget anything, we’ll find a solution, however. We often have spare gear with us, or we can point you in the direction of a shop.

Do I need travel insurance and travel health insurance?

We always recommend that you take out travel insurance to cover costs incurred if you need to cancel the trip due to illness or other reasons. When shopping for travel health insurance, make sure the policy covers the potentially high cost of medical evacuation to your home country. Both forms of insurance can save you a lot of money in an emergency and we recommend them unreservedly. In many countries, your national motoring organization can provide the coverage you need.

What should I keep in mind when riding with a passenger?

Riding two-up is almost always possible. In difficult terrain or on rough tracks, every passenger has a guaranteed seat in the support vehicle to keep things relaxed for both rider and pillion.

Do pillion passengers have a guaranteed seat in the support vehicle?

Yes, all passengers have a guaranteed seat. In bad weather or challenging riding conditions, they can switch to the support vehicle at any time – and back to the bike when conditions improve.

How big are the groups? What’s the minimum number of participants?

Groups generally consist of 8 to 14 riders and 2 to 6 passengers. The minimum number of participants is 6 riders.

What’s the Classic Bike Adventure travel team like?

Our European tour guides are skilled motorcyclists and inveterate travelers who love India. They’re resilient in the face of stress and know the history and culture of the regions they cover. Our Indian mechanics are experienced Enfield specialists who all speak English and are happy to help with any technical problem, great or small. A stand-in rider is always available. More information on our travel concept is available here .

What kind of bikes will we ride?

We ride 500cc Royal Enfield Bullets manufactured from 2014 to 2017 that feature electric starters, 5-speed gearboxes with the gearshift on the left, front disk brakes, roomy and rugged leather saddlebags, crashbars, 19” tires and twin horns.

What do I need in the way of documents?

You will need your passport, national driving license, international driving license and flight ticket. Please be sure to make photocopies of all of your important travel documents and carry them separately. They can be invaluable in an emergency.

What are the import regulations for India?

Up to 200 cigarettes and 2 liters of alcohol may be imported duty-free. All international cigarette and spirits brands are available in India. Customs checks of arriving tourists have become considerably less strict in recent years.

Do I need a driving license?

All riders must have a valid motorcycle driving license issued in their home country. An international driving license is also required. Be sure to contact the relevant authorities in your home country well in advance for more information on obtaining an international driving license.

Will I need maps?

Simple street maps are often available locally. The best road maps are available from the German publishers Reise Know How and Nelles. These are only available in specialized bookstores or online.

Where can I stow my bags?

Your baggage will be carried by the support vehicle. Please don’t pack too much – remember: less is more. From time to time, we’ll have to carry our baggage over short distances to the hotel. Baggage is not insured, so please be sure to purchase your own baggage insurance for the trip if necessary. Your personal items for the day are best kept in the saddlebags or your daypack. Tank bags – including magnetic ones – can be used on the Enfields, but we don’t provide them.

Do I need to buy an Indian SIM card for my phone?

European SIM cards now work almost everywhere in India. You’ll need patience if you want a local SIM card, as the registration takes a minimum of three days, and in some regions it is not possible at all.

How much is the deposit for the bike?

Riders must make a deposit of USD/EUR 500.00 in cash for their bikes. The deposit will be refunded when the bike is returned in good condition. The deposit corresponds to the comprehensive insurance deductible for damage to the rented bike and damage or injuries to third parties caused by the rider. (The deductible is payable in such cases!)

Important note: The deductible also applies to damage or injury to third parties. In practice, the rider is initially liable for the full damages. The costs are later refunded by the insurance company, minus the deductible.

What are the specs of the bikes?

Technical specifications: Single-cylinder four-stroke, 499 cc, 16 kW (28 bhp) at 4,600 rpm, 178 kg, 80 cm seat height, 123 kph max.

Our Enfields were manufactured from 2013 to 2017 and are well-maintained. Naturally, some of them bear the minor battle scars typical of touring motorcycles. Technically, they are all in top shape and perfectly suited to the planned tours. They’re tremendous fun to ride, and their handling is safe and predictable after a brief familiarization period. Our average speeds on the tour range from 40 to 60 kph, depending on the road conditions and traffic.

On which side do you ride in India?

Indians drive on the left. The flexible and generally considerate driving style of the locals makes it easy to adjust to riding on the “wrong side” and coping with traffic conditions that initially seem chaotic. The behavior of pedestrians and cyclists, and the frequent presence of animals on the road call for considerably more attention, however. Extreme caution is required around children. Further information on traffic and riding can be found here and here .

What kind of food and drinks will we be having in India?

Western food is generally not available, so we’ll be having simple, often vegetarian meals as well as regional specialties throughout the tour. Hearty breakfasts will not always be available. We can promise you a wide range of cuisine, with a special emphasis on local specialties. In general, a lot of curry is served in India, and little meat – chicken being the most common non-vegetarian food – but plenty of vegetables, legumes and rice. Indian cuisine is generally well-spiced, easily digestible and not overly hot. Vegetarians will have no problems in India. Indian beer is not always up to international standards. The most common brands are Kingfisher, Castle and San Miguel. The local Chang beer is quite effective but requires a bit of getting used to. Wine – when it’s available – is even more of an acquired taste than Chang. Mineral water and beverages such as Coca Cola can be purchased anywhere and must be carried individually.

Should I bring Indian rupees to India, or are US dollars preferable?

You are not allowed to bring Indian currency into the country or take it out. You may bring the equivalent of up to US$ 5,000 in foreign currency into the country without prior notice. We recommend bringing euros in €50 and €100 notes. Please make a note of the daily exchange rate to avoid getting a bad rate at the airport. American Express Traveler’s Cheques are no longer in common use and will cause unnecessary hassles. Credit cards (Maestro, Visa and MasterCard) with PINs can be used for cash advances from ATMs in many towns. You will need the equivalent of around €100 to €150 for drinks, lunch and tips per week.

What’s a typical day on the road like?

A travel day normally begins at 8 am with breakfast. Around 9 am, after a short briefing by the road captain, it’s time for the day’s riding, the mileage of which can vary quite a bit. Plenty of time will be available for lunch and coffee breaks, of course. Depending on the day’s mileage, we’ll reach the destination hotel between 3 and 4 pm. Since our tours vary considerably, we may also hit the road at 8 am on high-mileage days – which is also nice, because then we have the whole day ahead of us.

What’s the time difference?

Indian standard time is 5.5 hours ahead of GMT.

LADAKH MOTORCYCLE TOUR

Tour Dates

Embark on an epic adventure through Ladakh.

Ladakh Motorcycle Tour Map

We have a new adventure waiting for you every day on our Ladakh Tour.

Take a sneak peek into our day-to-day journey, arrive in srinagar.

Welcome to Srinagar! The Capital of Kashmir, vale of the North. Srinagar is the entry point into the gorgeous Kashmir valley and located in the Himalayan range about 1600m above sea level. Srinagar’s location is an access point into the higher Himalayas. We’ve taken care and chosen this city as a start location in order for every rider to acclimatize to the altitude as we ascend into elevations of about 2500 meters and beyond. This is extremely important to do to avoid being hit by AMS, Acute Mountain sickness, which occurs at higher altitudes due to the lack of Oxygen. After the group briefing, we get on our motorcycles for a short ride across the town to get you familiar with Indian roads and traffic.

Srinagar to Kargil

The ride begins towards Leh where the roads ascend crossing Pahalgam and famous ski destination to Zoji la, the first high Himalayan pass that separates Kashmir from Ladakh at an altitude 3528 m and is our entry point into the higher Himalayas. The road to Zoji la is rough and tricky and once upon a time treacherous but become better over the years. We push on to Drass and the onwards to Kargil our first stop. Enroute we stop at the Kargil war memorial to pay our respects to the soldiers who fought to keep this land together.

Kargil to Leh – Lamayuru visit

An early start on one of the most scenic roads into the Leh. We ride across 2 high passes Fotu la and Namika La (3700 m) before we descend into Lamayuru, our stop for the monastery visit. With the landscape looking like the face of the moon Lamayuru is an ancient site with rich history. We push further on and reach Leh well before sunset.

Exploration Day at Leh

JULEY! A relaxed day in Leh, the capital of Ladkah: The land of the high passes. Located 3500 m (11,480) feet, Leh is situated in a valley surrounded by some of the tallest mountains in the world. Over the next few days we get to explore these mountains and are riding at elevations over 3000 meters. Isn’t that Awesome..? The Indus River flows right through giving the valley its life. An ancient land with ancient traditions Leh city is vibrant with the Tibetan way of life. We explore the market and the old palace and few other places around.

leh motorcycle tour

Leh to Nubra via Khardungla

Today we set out towards the North of Leh for a real taste of Ladkah, an off-roaders paradise. We traverse across what used to be the highest Motorable road in the world, Khardung La 5359m / 17582 feet. The landscapes are stunning as the road descends in the Nubra Valley. A remote part of Ladkah that use to be in-accessible just a decade ago for more than 6 months a year! The views are wide with mountains all the way to the horizon. Some off-road sections and river crossings add to the excitement all at high altitude. We reach Nubra in time for late lunch!

leh motorcycle tour

Nubra to Pangong Tso via Shyok

We ride out along the Shyok river towards Agham, as we head towards Pangong Tso, one of the most beautiful high altitude lakes in the world. A brackish water lake at an altitude of over 4,300m, with stunning hues that change shades as the sun travels in its path. The first sight of the lake would make the most ardent rider stop to take in the beauty as the sights just keep getting better. The day’s ride is along the river, an offroad course curated by every changing course of the river, with many small and medium river crossings fed by the snow melt from the high glaciers. Today would be a test of one’s riding skill at tackling terrain and maintaining calm. Brace yourselves!

leh motorcycle tour

Pangong Tso to Hanle

We leave stunning lake Pangong to head towards another remote part of eastern Ladkah, Hanle via the Changtang plateau. The ride while mostly flat would traverse vast open spaces across gravel roads or no roads. One needs to be mindful of the soft sand pits that can take you out. Hanle known for its clear skies houses one of the highest observatories in the world at 4500m elevation. For Astro photo buffs, there is no better place to get shots of the Milky Way in all its glory.

leh motorcycle tour

Hanle – Umling La – Hanle

Today we head out to highest motorable road in the world at 5,883m to Umling La! That is half the height of a cruising jet plane and higher than Everest’s base camp! A road created for strategic reasons by the Indian Army, close to the China border. The route is totally gravel, off road with sandy patches. While the road keeps you busy the scenery will entertain you. Hold your breath at the stunning show put up by the sun and clouds on the mountainous. The climb to the top is not easy but stunning, and you riders have earned your badges! Welcome to the roof of the World! Umling La.

leh motorcycle tour

Hanle to Leh

Our final ride day as we head back to Leh. The ride takes us from Hanle to Loma. We then join the mighty Indus river and ride along its path all the way into Leh crossing Mahe bridge, a lifeline across the river. The ride is fairly flat but there are some narrow stretches of road with deep gorges over looking the river with gravel patches thrown in. We reach Leh in the evening and unwind over drinks and dinner.

Departure from Leh

Saying our final goodbyes. The group leaves this mountain kingdom with a heart full of memories and a soul full of amazing adventures that only a land like Ladkah can give you!! Juley, until next time!

About the region

You’ll find Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh covering most of India’s Northern Himalaya region, bringing with them a landscape (and moonscape) that is unlike anywhere else you’ve travelled. We invite you to journey to one of the most beautiful and rugged parts of the world on our Ladakh motorcycle tour, with the wind in your face and adventure in the air.

As you look closer at the bright green oasis that surrounds the villages in the Ladakh area, you’ll see the drab brown mountains break into a flurry of fantasy colours. Take in the century's old monasteries, where the ancient traditions of mystic Buddhism are cradled, perched over precarious rock cliffs.

Did you know that the road to Ladakh is the same trail that was used by the caravans travelling to the Silk Route many centuries ago? If this isn’t awe-inspiring enough, remember that the roads here are only open four months of the year, as they’re covered in snow at all other times.

For many riders, the highlight of this tour is Khardung La – to pass from Leh into the Nubra Valley, you will ride along a road that sits at an incredible 18,380ft above sea level.

Embark on a journey of self-discovery as you ride to altitudes exceeding 12,000ft above sea level and visit the highest cold desert in the world. Pass deep river gorges on your way to Khardung La – the world’s highest motorable pass. This is surely on the toughest motorcycle rides anywhere in the world, and the Viktorianz team is excited to be with you on such a life-changing journey.

Do I need to be concerned about altitude sickness?

Yes. As the Ladakh region is located so high in the mountains, we recommend arriving a few days early if flying in so that you can acclimatise appropriately. If it’s possible to drive into the area instead, this will allow you to acclimatise as you go.

Is petrol easy to come by?

Not always – petrol pumps tend to be few and far between in the Ladakh region. When travelling between Manali and Leh, for example, the next pump after Keylong is 356km away! For this reason, you must plan Ladakh trips by bike in advance to avoid being caught out with an empty tank.

Leh Ladakh Bike Trip Itinerary

If you’re on an early flight into Leh from Delhi, make sure that you look out the window to watch the sun rising over the spectacular Himalayan peaks (one of the most beautiful sights in the world, in our opinion). Your Viktorianz guide will meet you at the airport and escort you to your hotel, where you’ll spend the rest of the day taking it easy – we're at 10,000ft here and you need to get used to the lower oxygen levels. Your bike will also arrive at the hotel, so feel free to take a small trail ride if you’d like to familiarise yourself with it.

If you’re a non-Indian tourist, we’ll take this opportunity to apply for and process mandatory inner line permits that you’ll need to enjoy your Leh tour.

To provide you with another day to acclimatise to the high altitude, we’ll keep it local with a tour of the Leh region (by either car or motorcycle, whatever you prefer). We’ll visit some must-see tourist locations, including Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa, the Hall of Fame Museum, Shey, Thikse, Stok Palace, and the Hemis Monastery.

If you’ve opted to ride today, this is a great opportunity to get used to your bike and the Ladakh traffic conditions.

On the first day of the actual ride, we’ll head out to explore some of the region’s most unique landscapes on a scenic ride through some fine rocky faces to visit the Lamayuru Monastery and Moonland. On our way back, we’ll pay a visit to the Alchi and Likir Monasteries, the magical phenomenon of Magnetic Hill, and the scenic Bazgo Plains. The plan is to arrive back at the hotel by the late afternoon.

Having spent 3 nights at Leh you are now fairly acclimatised and used to your iron horse, and this is a landmark day. Today you would ride on to the World's highest motorable pass - Khardungla ( 18,380 ft) and cross into the beautiful Nubra valley through some deep gorges. What you ride today has been for thousands of years a caravan route that used to feed the Silk route through Karakoram pass. The essential tourist spots we see today are the Hunder sand dunes; double humped Bactrian camels and unique Diskit monastery and its Giant Buddha. The Bactrian camels are a wonderful remnants of the trading days. We stay overnight in a typical high altitude Ladakhi village in Nubra valley - Hunder or Sumur. Witness the rustic lifestyle of people in these most rugged terrains of the World.

After breakfast, we ride to Pangong lake via Shyok and onto Tangtse and Spangmik. It’s a short cut and is a beautiful, rugged route. The road follows Shyok river and climbs up a mountain before finally descending into Shyok village. It will take you a couple of hours to reach Shyok. By noon you would arrive at one of the most spectacular vistas of your life - Pangong Tso Lake (alt: 14,500 ft) It is 5-6 km wide and over 130 km long, two-thirds of which lies on the other side of the Indo-China border. It has some of the most beautiful hues of blue, that you would ever see in your life. And a night by the lakeside camp or resort is an experience of lifetime.

Having done Pangong Tso - now its time to return back to Leh for your last evening in Ladakh. You could spend the time collecting some memorablia from Leh town, or just have a easy evening looking back at your time spent in this wonderful part of the world. These memories will surely keep coming back to you. If you wish to extend your trip and see Tso Moriri Lake - please talk to us well in advance ...

You have had one of the most unique experiences in life. It’s time to fly out of Leh. Our representative will transfer you to airport.

While everything essential is covered on this week long tour. It would take 3 more days if you wish to see the regions of Turtuk ( A Balti village on Indo-Pak border) and Tso Moriri (another beautiful high altitude lake). If you are keen and have time - do ask us to plan your customisedtour'.

PS: There may be minor re-routing in case of weather conditions or road conditions at the actual time of travel. Your guide is best qualified to take this call.

bike tour to leh review

" Starting of 2017, me and my wife decided to kick off our bucket list by having bike trip in Ladakh in month of May. Once we decided, we started our online research, two of the most critical requirements we had were safety in such challenging terrain and convenience.

As we looked into may reviews online one name kept popping up continuously was Viktorianz, although it initially sounded bit expensive to do bike trip with them, but we were looking for someone with good track record and I guess there is no match to Viktorianz. During the whole experience of planning the trip, it was really great professionalism from Viktorianz, which helped us build our confidence, even though family and friends were quite worried. I was personally also bit skeptical in terms of how this experience will turn out. Even though I did many long trips on bike during my young age, I had no bike for almost last 5-6 years and without any recent experience, taking on such adventurous trip was bit of stretch for me.

We took bike trip in first week of May (1st May – 8th May, 2017), although the summer starts at same time in Ladakh region, when we arrived in Leh, winter decided to extend its stay and that made our trip extraordinarily memorable. Right from advising us on every small detail about planning the trip, Viktorianz team did excellent job, they patiently handled all our queries and provided all the details. The hotel we stayed during our stay in Leh was really good and one of the best in town., every stay during the bike trip was made extremely comfortable, including the tents at Pangong lake.

One of the key for stay in such high altitude is to get accustomed to low oxygen level and stay away from altitude sickness. And this was precisely in center of everything Viktorianz planned for the bike trip. Viktorianz has great team, and they get best local support team (local guide, 4x4 back vehicle, bike mechanic), bikes were so well refined & oiled machines, that I never realized that these bikes were on rent! Best part of this bike trip was our team leader and coordinator for this bike trip, Ankit, great guy with so much energy and exuberance, but same time extremely humble and caring, I think this trip without him would have not been such great experience!

Final words! I read some where that “buy experiences rather than buying materialistic things!” and it wouldn’t be anymore true than when I bought this experience with Viktorianz, one of the best decision I ever made! "

ladakh bike trip review

"Col Mike mixes the adventure, nature and culture so well in his conduct of riding expeditions. We were very impressed with his deep knowledge of the local area and his military type of conduct of rides. His 24 years of experience in Indian Army comes in Handy at all times during the trip. He sure is one very reliable bike trip leader in India. I would go with him anytime and many times. "

What makes our Himalayan motorcycle tours different from the rest?

At Viktorianz, we go above and beyond. We have exceptional attention to detail and offer a personalised service for the duration of your Leh tour. We deliberately keep our group sizes small so that we can provide each traveller as much personal attention as possible. Your safety is our number one priority, closely followed by your enjoyment.

You don’t have to be an expert rider to participate in one of our motorcycle tours – we can tailor a journey that’s suitable for riders of all experience levels. Ensure that you’re upfront about your abilities and let us handle the rest.

Leh Ladakh Tour Itinerary

Your tour will begin when you arrive in Delhi – your Viktorianz guide will meet you at either the airport or the train station and escort you to your hotel. In the evening, we’ll provide a detailed briefing of the journey ahead and will give you some time to familiarise yourself with the motorcycle (your best friend for the next 15 days).

Until the briefing, feel free to spend some time exploring Delhi. The capital city of India, it is of immense historical and political importance as a revered power centre. Some popular tourist locations to visit include Qutub Minar, Lutyens Delhi, Humayuns Tomb, the Bollywood Opera at Kingdown of Dreams, and the street food of Chandi Chowk.

Our rides normally commence in the early morning, so that we can take advantage of less traffic and a cooler riding experience. This tour begins on the vintage Grand Trunk Road, which comes all the way from Peshawar and travels through the plains of Haryana and Punjab. Hamlets and rice fields will be visible on either side of the road. In fact, Punjab is known for its distinct cuisine and flavour – don't miss some delicious chicken when you arrive in Jullundhar.

Spend the morning travelling through rural Punjab. It’s all plains until we arrive at the lower Himalayas, where it becomes an endless series of bridges over streams. Once we enter the foothills of the Himalayas, we’ll pass into the Jammu region (in particular, the Hindu settlements of Jammu and Kashmir). Be careful of potholes and unruly traffic at road crossings!

After an early breakfast, we’ll head towards Srinagar. Expect the roads to be busier, as we’ll pass through crowded villages and towns (made even busier by the passing army convoys, which have priority rights). There’s a checkpoint just short of the Jawahar Tunnel where a passport and identity check will be performed, then we’ll cross through the tunnel to the beautiful Kashmir Valley. After a quick photo stop, we’ll continue through the crowded Kashmiri towns towards Srinagar. Expect some traffic snarls as we get closer.

We expect to each Srinagar by afternoon, where we’ll take a Shikara ride to our houseboats on the famous Dal Lake. Feel free to relax for a bit before setting out to explore the lake and its surrounds. A Shikara ride on the lake is a popular pastime for the evening. We’ll be served a Kashmiri dinner back at the houseboats, after which you can do some more exploring or retire early.

Another early morning start, today’s ride will take us along a nice and winding road along a gushing water stream to Sonmarg. This is a beautiful hamlet filled with lush green meadows. Your riding skills will be put to the test when we cross the Zozila Pass (which gets washed away by heavy snowfall each year) - there’s no blacktop and there are long truck convoys to contend with at times. Once we’re through the pass, we’ll head to Dras (which has been rated as the second coldest inhabited place in the world) where you will be able to pay tribute to the real heroes of the Kargil War.

We’ll spend the night at a hotel in the small Himalayan township of Kargil.

After another early breakfast, it will be time to hit the road in the direction of Leh. During our travels, we’ll visit the standing Buddha at Mulbegh and the famous Lamayuru Monastery, both of which are in a unique landscape that closely resembles the moon (aptly named Moonland). Detouring off the main highway, we’ll take a lunchbreak at the ancient Alchi Monastery before riding on to Magnetic Hill and the Pathar Sahib Gurudwara.

We’ll then tackle the Bazgo Plains and reach Leh by the evening. This is the capital of the Ladakh region and will provide you with access to some modern amenities, so feel free to take advantage.

You’ve spent 4 days riding and have travelled beyond 10,000ft above sea level, so we’ve dedicated today to relaxing and acclimatisation. You’ll be able to explore Leh at your own pleasure. We highly recommend the Stok Palace, Leh Palace, Hall of Fame Museum, Shey, Thiksey, Hemis, Shanti Stupa, and the Tibetan markets and shops. We also recommend enjoying some local food and purchasing some souvenirs. Just remember to take it easy.

The motorcycles will receive a thorough service to prepare them for the next leg.

Today, we tackle the world’s highest motorable pass at 18,384ft – Khardung La. The highest point that you can ever reach on a motorcycle, be sure to snap a quick picture before heading down the other side of the pass (where the oxygen gets a bit higher). We’ve now crossed over into the beautiful Nubra Valley. We’ll spend the night at an organic farm field camp, with dinner by the fireplace and clear views of the night sky – you're sure to love it.

The Nubra Valley deserves more than just a single day’ there are quite a few things to see and do here. Explore the Diskit Monastery (the monks have some great stories to share) and the famous Hunder sand dunes (where you’ll be amazed at the double hump bactrian camels, remnants of the silk trade that flourished here in the past).

The Balti village of Turtuk or the hot water springs of Panamik are about a day’s ride (there and back), but please note they would require special permits and preparations.

An easier morning than those of days past, feel free to take one last walk around the village and see life as it exists beyond 10,000ft. At around 10am, we’ll return to Leh via the Khardung La pass. The rest of the day is yours to spend how you see fit.

A wonderful ride to see one of the most beautiful vistas you’ll ever see in your life. The journey will take us through some passes, valleys, and even some truly frightening roads – try spotting the mormots or ibex on the slopes and meadows. Pangong Tso Lake truly is a natural wonder – the turquoise blue waters are known to change as the sun and clouds change. We’ll spend the night camped on the lake.

Remember that it’s cold in the passes and on the lake, and the winds are pretty harsh at times, so be sure to rug up.

We’ll need to head out early, as it’s a long day’s ride to Sarchu. We’ll pass by Tanglang La followed by the drying Tso-Kar Lake (popular amongst birdwatching enthusiasts) to the Moreh Plains, where the roads will become a lot nicer. At the end of these plains, we’ll reach a roadside camp called Pang where we’ll stop for lunch before continuing on. By late afternoon, we’ll cross the border into the windy valley of Himachal at Sarchu.

We’ll quickly check into our camp here – Sarchu is normally quite cold and has a wind chill effect plus it’sa good idea to retire early, as there’s another long day of riding ahead.

This is the last of the tough riding days, but it’s a leg that also offers the most rewarding views so it’s completely worth it in our minds. We aim to head off early. Expect a mix of good, bad, and ugly roads – plus, we’ll cross the famous Rohtang La (which means the Heap of Dead). There is a tunnel currently under construction that will make this pass redundant, so enjoy it while you can.

If we only stop when it’s essential (there are a few spots where IDs will be checked), we can expect to reach Manali by evening.

We’ll take it a lot easier today as we head back down through the Himalayas towards Chandigarh. The roads will get busier as you get closer to more modern civilisation – once we hit the plains, we’ll be back to the usual mundane traffic of Indian roads.

Like all good things, your Ladakh motorcycle tour must also come to an end. We’ll arrive back in Delhi by the afternoon and return to your hotel. Your bike will be returned, and you’ll be able to prepare for either your flight or train ride home. We normally have a debriefing session, where we can see all the photos that were taken during the ride and you’ll be able to say goodbye to the friends you’ve made on your Leh group tour. Until next time!

" I am so happy we picked Viktorianz to plan and execute our Ladakh ride for us. The combination of expertise, professionalism, the personal touch, the attention to detail, the never say die attitude, and just the sheer dedication and commitment to ensure that every aspect of the ride was flawless - it's extremely rare for all of this to come together. I have been on several organized bike trips before, and am aware of the many things that can go wrong, or disappoint while on these trips - especially when you are in tough terrain and unpredictable weather, but these guys just blew us away. I would strongly recommend them and am already planning my next trip with them. "

Ladakh Motorcycle Tour Route Map

Tour Itinerary

Day #1 new delhi international airport - leh airport.

Once you have arrived in India from your home country, you will board an aircraft booked by us from New Delhi International Airport (Terminal 3) which will take you all the way to your base camp.

And from the moment you arrive at Leh Airport, your tour will begin. But in order to acclimatize with the altitude, you might require a few hours of sleep. This is why we will transfer you straight to your Hotel in Leh. Post which, you will be introduced with the rest of the touring team.

Subsequently, a brand-new Royal Enfield Himalayan / Scram 411 will be provided to you, which, you can take out for a short ride towards the Royal Leh Palace.

Day #2 Leh - Lamayuru - Leh

On the second day of your trip, you will set out early on your Royal Enfield to visit the famous Lamayuru Monastery, one of the most fascinating, ancient, and enormous monasteries of Ladakh. This monastery performs traditional spiritual ceremonies on a daily basis, reflecting the practices of Drikung and Kagyu Buddhism. On your way back to Leh, you will have the chance to witness the enchanting beauty of the moonscapes, the extraordinary Magnetic Hill as well as Alchi Monastery.

Day #3 Leh - Nubra Valley

You will be having an early morning breakfast, as today we will be heading towards Nubra Valley, which is also known as the “Valley of Flowers”. But behold, as you will be riding over an acclaimed mountain pass, the mighty Khardung La (17,582 ft.), which in fact is a gateway to this valley.

And after successfully crossing this high mountain pass, you will ride towards Turtuk, a majestic village known for its fruit plantation, especially apricots.

Later in the evening, you will make your way to Hunder, which, to be honest, is an oasis in the middle of this cold desert. And finally, we will conclude our day by spending the night in a boutique resort surrounded by stunning Himalayan landscapes.

Day #4 Nubra Valley - Pangong Tso

Another early start to the day as you will set off for Lake Pangong via the Shyok Route. Located at an altitude of 13,940 feet, Pangong Lake or Pangong Tso, an endorheic lake, is known for its sparkling blue water and mesmerizing backdrop.

The ride to the lake offers many sightseeing opportunities and once you have reached, you can spend the rest of the day relaxing in an oasis of serenity.

But lo and behold, as the best is yet to come! An overnight stay by the lake will be arranged, along with a lovely bonfire for a short get together with the team.

Day #5 Pangong Tso - Leh

On the fifth day, you will head back to your base camp (Leh city). So, following a hearty breakfast by the lake, you will make your way to the mighty Changla Pass (the tenth highest motorable pass in the world: 17,586 ft.) and ride back to the city of Leh. This journey will fascinate you with its majestic vistas and panoramic settings.

And upon reaching, you will conclude your day by relaxing in a premium hotel.

Day #6 Leh - Tso Moriri

On the sixth day, your expedition will once again take you to the beautiful and picturesque Tso Moriri. Situated on the Changthang Plateau, Tso Moriri is considered to be one of the most beautiful, serene and sacred lakes of the Himalayas.

To be honest, the ride towards this lake is quite demanding and involves a lot of off-road riding that will definitely polish your motoring skills while giving countless memories in the process. And after reaching the lakeside, you can relax for the rest of the day in a traditional Ladakhi settlement.

Day #7 Tso Moriri - Leh

You will start your day with a wholesome organic breakfast and authentic butter tea as you prepare to ride back to your base camp (Leh city). On your way back, you will ride towards Tso Kar, yet another high-altitude lake on the Rupshu Plateau in southern Ladakh featuring snow-capped mountains and panoramic views. Here, you will have all the time in the world to fill your soul with the sight before resuming your journey back to Leh.

On the way back, you will also cross the mighty Tanglang La, another high mountain pass (17,480 feet) and a gateway to your base camp. Later in the evening, you will be invited to a small get-together to share your experiences with the other riders of your team along with drinks and dinner.

This would be the last day of your motorcycle tour and we will leave this day for you to explore this beautiful region all by yourself. You can visit the nearby Tibetan market to shop for souvenirs or roam through the landscapes to take back home as many memories as you can.

Day #9 Leh - New Delhi International Airport

This delightful motorcycle tour will end today, leaving you with blissful memories that will remain with you for the rest of the eternity. Our representative will take you to the airport, from where you can board your flight back to the capital city of New Delhi.

But before you leave, the entire team of Wild Triumph will bid adieu and wish you good health, success and happiness for the rest of your life.

Top 5 Places You Will Visit On This Motorcycle Tour

Ladakh : A dream destination for wanderers, backpackers, moto travelers, adventure seekers and nature lovers.

So, if you think that Ladakh is only an adventurous destination suitable for extreme riders, you probably are unaware of the beautiful places the region has to offer. As such, if you are planning a motorcycle trip to Ladakh and wondering what you will get out of it besides a great ride – here is a list of 5 most beautiful spots that are part of this tour.

Nubra Valley

Nubra Valley

Nubra Valley, also called Dumra, is a historical region of Ladakh situated at an altitude of around 10,000 feet above sea level. This valley is the most scenic and amongst the best tourist destinations in Ladakh.

With its stunning backdrop and gracious locals, Nubra Valley, which was once an ancient trade route connecting to Yarkand (an autonomous region of China), is in fact one of the cherished destinations amongst motorcycle enthusiasts.

Nestled in the heart of the great Himalayas, this region is one of the last treasures of our planet due to its remoteness. Indeed, a visit to Nubra is not just a journey, but a travel experience – the huge sand dunes of Hunder in this valley make a spectacular setting for an overnight stay that ought to be experienced once in your life.

Pangong Tso

Pangong Tso

Remember the sparkling clear lake and scenic route we mentioned in the itinerary? Well, this lake is what we were talking about and is indeed one of the most fascinating places to visit in Ladakh.

And while lakes and streams are not uncommon in the Himalayan region, none of them can compare to this picturesque Pangong Tso. And not only that: depending on the time of day, you can observe different shades of blue until evening. Then after sunset, millions of stars can be seen reflecting on its surface.

Believe it or not, it is one of the most beautiful lakes in the world and can be reached from your base camp (Leh) by venturing on a short 6-hour ride. Surprisingly, Pangong Tso freezes over in winter, even though it is considered to be the highest saltwater lake in the world! How fascinating is that?

Tso Moriri

The magnificent Tso Moriri Lake, situated in a remote corner of the Himalayas, is considered to be the largest snow-covered lake of India. Located at an altitude of more than 14,835 feet above sea level in a treacherous mountainous terrain, it appears nothing but a heavenly gift. However, owing to its high altitude and challenging route, not many riders embark on this journey.

This beautiful blue lake, measuring approximately 7 kilometers in width and around 19 kilometers in length, is home to a diverse array of flora and fauna.

And while we agree that Pangong Tso is by far more famous, it’s Tso Moriri that will simply leave you in awe. All in all, it is a must visit and worthwhile destination for anyone who embarks on a motorcycle tour of Ladakh.

Hemis Monastery

Hemis Monastery

About 45 kilometers from the city of Leh, you will come across the monastery of Hemis, which dates back to the 11th century. This monastery was built during the reign of the Ladakhi King Singe Namgyal in 1627 AD and houses numerous beautiful artworks, engraved statues, and ancient swords that were used by the king. Being a Tibetan monastery, it is the most extravagant and remarkable site in Ladakh that has still preserved the largest of all Thangka paintings.

Above all, the Hemis religious community celebrates their main annual festival in this monastery, which is held in honor of Lord Padmasambhava . It is one of the most exciting festivals in the world involving spiritual mask dance commonly known as Cham .

In the 18th and 19th centuries, Hemis was restructured into its present appearance with a large assembly hall and a spacious courtyard. It now features a three-dimensional structure representing Mandala and is filled with countless artistic treasures making it one of the most outstanding examples of Buddhist architecture and a special highlight of our motorcycle trip.

Royal Leh Palace

Royal Leh Palace

Most of you would associate Ladakh with religious monasteries, clear blue lakes, breathtaking landscapes and high mountain peaks. However, with its Royal Kings and Palaces, Ladakh is also entwined with a rich history.

The enormous 17th-century Leh Palace, designed to resemble the former residence of the Dalai Lama (Potala Palace of Tibet), overlooks the marketplace and winding streets of this city. It is a 9-storey high mansion, where the upper floors were originally utilized by the royal family, while the lower floors were used for storage and supplies.

This Royal Leh Palace is about 4.5 kilometers from the Leh Airport and is accessible by road. Currently, the Palace is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and the view from the terrace is breathtaking. So, be sure to explore this wonderful architecture on the first day of your trip!

How To Plan Your Ladakh Motorcycle Tour?

Anyone who is willing to embark on a motorcycle tour of Ladakh is usually overwhelmed with all kinds of possibilities. But the first real question is: How to start planning your trip? So, before you get down to the practical tasks involving packing, flight booking, etc., the first thing you should focus on is finalizing the itinerary.

Typically, the route you choose and the places you wish to visit on your expedition will determine the number of days required for a motorcycle trip to Ladakh. For instance, you can start your trip either from Delhi, from Manali or directly from the capital of Ladakh by flying straight to Leh from New Delhi International Airport.

As such, you will need to spare at least 18 days for a motorcycle trip starting from Delhi. But if you can’t devote that much time, you have the option of starting the tour from Manali and riding all the way to Ladakh via the Leh-Manali Highway, bringing the total duration of the tour to 14 days.

And if you are interested in traversing the entire Ladakh range while keeping the duration of the tour to a minimum, you can fly directly to Leh and start your journey from there, which incidentally would take around 9 days.

Always remember that planning a motorcycle trip in advance is the best way to get yourself prepared for the experience. And you should certainly devote enough time to think about all the places you would want to visit and how much time you can actually spend riding towards them.

If you are on a tight schedule, it is highly likely that you will constantly pressure yourself during the tour and may even want to skip some important destinations in order to finish the trip quickly.

So, be sure to work out a practical itinerary that includes plenty of free time between two major destinations to make this trip as exciting and relaxing as possible.

Best Motorcycles For Touring In Ladakh

Every rider must first of all give consideration to the motorcycle on which he has practical hands-on experience. After all, riding in the mountains can be extremely demanding as it requires a lot of off-roading skills.

And by choosing a motorcycle that you can manage well and that is anything but difficult to maneuver has always proven to be helpful in such ventures. So, make sure you go for comfort rather than style.

If you are looking for suggestions: Royal Enfield’s Himalayan is the most popular machine among motorcyclists, topping the charts year after year when it comes to touring in Ladakh. There is a reason for this, which is why so many of these can been in the Indian mountains. And thanks to its low center of gravity as well as ease-of-control, the bike remains stable in all kinds of terrain.

But besides the Himalayan, there are a few other recommended brands if you want to try something different: BMW R 1200 GS, Triumph Tiger 1200, Honda Africa Twin and Hero Xpulse.

Best Time To Embark On a Motorcycle Tour Of Ladakh

Unlike the rest of India, a rather different time is recommended for traveling into the Indian Himalayas.

This is because while the rest of India experiences peak summers, this would be the ideal time to enjoy a motorcycle trip through Ladakh. Especially if you have decided to visit some remote regions that involve crossing a high mountain pass, as these routes are only open from May until September.

Slightly lower-lying regions of Ladakh, such as the capital Leh, can be accessed year-round if you fly directly into the city from New Delhi. However, expect heavy snowfall and adverse weather conditions if you plan to travel apart from the said months.

Altogether, the best time to venture on a motorcycle trip around Ladakh starts from May and remains till last week of September with the approximate temperature ranging between 10 to 15°C during the day. However, the month of June & September are particularly ideal for motorcyclists as you won’t find many tourists at this time of the year.

Ladakh motorcycle tour packing checklist

Things To Pack For Your Ladakh Motorcycle Trip

While there are a lot of things motorcyclists could agree on, no one seems to be absolutely right on one basic question: Packing.

Fortunately, you’re in for a treat today, because as experts in motorcycle touring , we have come up with a list of what to take and what to leave for your motorcycle trip to Ladakh. But do remember, our checklist is just an aid – and what is absolutely necessary depends on you entirely.

Required Physical Fitness For Touring In Ladakh

Long distance motorcycle tours require a good level of fitness, which is why it is often recommended to prepare several weeks in advance for your trip by following fitness regimes on a routine basis.

A multi-day motorcycle tour of Ladakh should not be underestimated – for the sake of your own safety. This is because an adventure such as this demands considerable amount of motor skills including an accurate responsiveness of your arms, shoulders and neck, especially on the curves.

In addition, this adventure involves riding in extreme weather conditions that eventually puts a lot of strain on the body.

Moreover, the oxygen content in the air is much lower than elsewhere, which greatly increases the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). It is therefore advisable to prepare the body well before such a trip to improve overall endurance and breathing capabilities.

Pro Tip: A regular fitness routine of more than six hours per week boosts cardiovascular health and your ability to recover quickly from exertion – and is the best way to prepare yourself for the Himalayas.

Tips For Riding Motorcycle In Ladakh

When you think of motorcycle touring in India , the first thing that comes to mind is the Himalayan mountains of Ladakh. And while there are certainly some straight roads you can find there, that is not often the case.

Given that most of you would be traveling from the west, here are few tips to help you ride in the mountains.

Tip 1: Not only do you need an agile motorcycle, but also a good sturdy helmet, waterproof pants, touring jacket, riding boots and motorcycle gloves to ensure complete safety in this treacherous region of Himalayas.

Tip 2: While entering a blind curve, it is important to have a clear view of the oncoming traffic as soon as possible. And in case something comes up unexpectedly, you as a motorcyclist need to be able to react quickly and accurately.

Tip 3: Always stay on the left-hand side while you are riding, unless you are overtaking, which should never be done without getting a clear view.

Tip 4: Watch out for falling rocks, gravel or black ice. These are typical warning signs of upcoming danger. And be careful: strong winds usually bring a lot of debris and loose splinters along with them.

Tip 5: Do not engage the front brakes excessively (else they will overheat and fail). It is better to shift down a gear and allow the engine to do the work.

Tip 6: Himalayan passes are often quite treacherous. As such, a good physical fitness is highly recommended!

Tip 7: In general, while riding in the high mountains of Ladakh, you must expect extreme weather conditions, including snow. So, be prepared for uncertainties at all times and pack accordingly.

Tip 8: If you are a novice rider, you should improve your riding skills by enrolling in one of the basic motorcycle safety foundation courses available near you. This is because you will be riding on winding and unpaved roads that are quite demanding and require at the least intermediate level of expertise.

Tip 9: Before venturing into any of the remote regions, it is wise to check with the locals about the condition of the road as well as the expected weather.

Tip 10: And lastly, touring in Ladakh is not just about challenges, remember to take as many stoppages as you like to embrace your journey and to relax.

How much does Ladakh motorcycle trip cost?

The classic way to calculate the cost of a Ladakh motorcycle trip is to determine the expected individual expense. For instance: tour package price, international flight charges, visa fees, and other miscellaneous costs (helmet, boots, jacket, etc.).

Now once you have made a list of these expenses, curate them all and add them up to get a ballpark figure. However, this calculation is never accurate and never reliable as there is always a possibility of unexpected expense including but not limited to shopping.

To give you a realistic idea of the actual cost involved on a trip to Ladakh, let’s just say for a 9-day tour, take a note of the following expenses.

All in all, if you opt for a 9-day of motorcycle trip to Ladakh, you will have to keep a budget of $4,920 aside.

However, this expense can be controlled and kept to a bare minimum. The most common way to keep your spending under control is to keep a list of your expenses. We recommend our riders who participate in our guided tours to use TravelSpend , a fairly simple app that is free (basic version) and serves the purpose.

All you do is enter the expenses under the relevant categories (e.g., alcohol, shopping, snacks) to get a graphical representation of how much you have spent and how much you are probably going to spend in the upcoming days.

Will I get altitude sickness while touring in Ladakh?

With rising altitude, the air pressure decreases and so does the ability of a body to absorb oxygen. However, once our body experiences conditions such as these, it immediately begins to adapt with the situation which can be seen by an increased heart beat in order to transport more oxygen to the blood. But this process may last for couple of days depending on the altitude you are riding.

Altitude sickness can affect riders of all age groups, both men and women, smokers and non-smokers alike. Therefore, it is best to address the problem before it becomes worse.

In short, mild symptoms of altitude sickness are quite common while touring in Ladakh. These symptoms fade away in a couple of days as you begin to acclimatize. So, during the first few days of your arrival, make sure you wear warm clothes and maintain a healthy diet.

Staying hydrated enough with electrolyte and water will also help your body to absorb oxygen better. Butter tea, fresh juice, and warm soup will also help, but refrain from alcohol at least for first few days.

Do I need a visa to participate in Ladakh motorcycle tours?

All the participants that would like to venture on a motorcycle tour of Ladakh are required by law to obtain an Indian visa prior to their departure from home country.

This applies to all foreign nationals, including those from Europe, UK and USA. However, you don’t need to visit any Indian embassy for this, as you can submit the application form online directly with the Bureau of Immigration ( Click here to visit website).

Your Indian visa will be emailed to you once it has been issued, and all you have to do is print it out and carry along with you.

Advice : Since you are visiting the country just for leisure, you can apply for an e-visa, also known as ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization), which is the cheapest and fastest way to get a tourist visa.

Do I need travel health insurance?

All the participants that have private insurance cover need to check their policy for international coverage. Typically, coverage outside the home country is limited, and not all policies include medical evacuation in the event of mishap.

This is why we recommend that you choose a specialized travel health insurance that covers your health outside of your home country as well. This type of insurance will protect you in case you fall sick or require any kind of treatment during your trip.

Subject to certain conditions, it will also cover the cost of return transport. Moreover, these insurances are not very expensive and usually cost around $150 for a two-week long trip.

What is the minimum & maximum number of participants in this tour?

In order to guarantee a quality service at a reasonable price, we require a certain number of participants. As such, we require a minimum number of 6 riders (excluding pillion riders) to successfully commence a guided motorcycle tour.

In the event that this is not achieved, we can propose an exclusive private motorcycle tour for you and your friends for a small surcharge.

Likewise, a maximum of 14 riders are allowed in a group in order to guarantee a satisfactory experience.

Is there an option to modify the tour?

A group of 6 or more riders may, by mutual consent, request customization before booking the tour. Such customizations may include a change in the overall duration of the tour, starting date, addition of specific destinations, altogether different motorcycles, or changes in the level of difficulty.

As an alternate to the aforementioned motorcycle tour, we also have few other routes on offer. Feel free to explore our entire range of Himalayan motorcycle tours to get a detailed insight.

Do pillion riders hold a guaranteed seat in the support vehicle?

All the pillion riders accompanying the tour have a guaranteed seat in the backup vehicle.

However, do note that we may change the vehicle type depending on the number of pillion riders accompanying the tour. For instance, a couple of pillion riders can easily relax in the back seat of an SUV, but if the group size is significantly big, we would switch to a 15-seater mini-bus.

Do I need a driving license?

Yes, international travelers must carry their country-issued driver’s license along with international driver’s license in order to drive any kind of motorized vehicle in India.

This international driver’s license is a kind of translation of your country issued license and is meant to make it easier for the officials or the traffic patrol officer to check whether you are authorized to ride a motorcycle or not.

What documents do I need for participating in this tour?

Apart from a valid driver’s license, passport and your ETA / Visa, all the international riders visiting Ladakh need to carry a Protective Area Permit (PAP Act 1958) to visit regions that are close to the international borders or are deemed restricted by the Government of India to ensure the protection of ecosystem and the local culture alike.

Not to worry though, the day you arrive in Ladakh, our representative will ensure that you have this important document issued before we enter in these restricted regions.

Do note however, if you are a diplomatic passport holder, a member of the United Nations, or a citizen of any neighboring countries of India ( see list here ), you will have to apply for this permit yourself three months in advance from either Indian Ministry of External Affairs or Home Affairs.

How much is the security deposit for the motorcycle?

You are required to deposit cash in the amount of $500 prior to the start of the tour. This deposit will be refunded in full after inspecting your motorcycle at the end of the tour.

And while all minor tumbles or tip-overs that do not significantly damage the motorcycle are generally covered by us, no refunds shall be made in the event of a serious fall, particularly involving negligence on the part of rider.

Where can I keep my luggage?

As a guided motorcycle tour operator, we bear the responsibility for carrying all the luggage on the tour. We usually bring a pickup truck along on these kinds of tours to store reserve fuel, spare parts, and luggage of all the tour participants.

Do I need to buy an Indian SIM card for my phone?

Except for some remote locations where even Indian sims won’t work, almost all regions in the Himalayas have an Internet connection.

So, in most cases, you will have access to a Wi-Fi network in your hotels, through which you can connect with your friends and family back home. Besides, we usually lend a cell phone to our group in case the local network is slow or has a poor connection. All in all, the choice is yours!

Do I need to follow any traffic laws in Ladakh?

All the Indian traffic laws and regulations apply to the Himalayan region of Ladakh as well.

Remember that vehicles in India drive on the left side of the road. Moreover, as a motorcyclist, always make way for bigger vehicles in case they are overtaking or are coming from the opposite direction.

And remember, honking in India is not at all offensive. It is sometimes used as a gesture to warn someone or as a precaution while entering a blind curve.

Road signs are equally important to understand as they guide drivers on the road. Read everything about them here .

What can I eat or drink in Ladakh?

Motorcycle touring in Ladakh also means relaxing over a cup of tea or enjoying your time with a delicious bowl of hot soup and noodles in between.

You will find many restaurants and cafés that serve authentic traditional dishes as well as international cuisines (Chinese, Nepalese, etc.), so you can really indulge in anything you like.

As for beverages, in Leh, the capital of Ladakh, there are many good bars and pubs that offer countless alcoholic options such as scotch, wine and beer. In the other remote regions, you won’t find much except for beer, so you can keep some reserve in the backup vehicle if you wish.

Should I bring Indian rupees to Ladakh, or are US dollars preferable?

It is advised to carry Indian rupees with you during the entire tour period.

All the international travelers are allowed to carry a maximum of 25,000 rupees while crossing international borders. However, you can bring in up to US$5,000 in cash into India without following any legal formalities. Should you wish to bring in more foreign currency, you will need to fill out a customs declaration form provided by the authorities.

Upon arrival in India, you can either use your credit / debit card with pin to withdraw cash from the ATMs found almost in every part of the city, or you can visit a foreign exchange counter at the airport.

How to be Tour Captain, By Ted Crum

07 jun 2016 8:52 am | anonymous member.

Find Nice Places to Camp!

Keep an eye out when you travel. Get advice and trip reports from club members, and watch for articles in magazines and other club newsletters. Note places the club has used before.  Group camps are often a better value, have more privacy and often have fewer restrictions on vehicle count, but a block of single sites can work well. Private campgrounds can be more flexible and welcoming to motorcycles. Pick spots close to home in the rainy season, favoring dryer southern locations. Stay out of high country until June, then take advantage of the season to cross the passes.  I will pass on to the next tour captain:

  • A list of every California state group camp
  • A list of every Forest Service group camp
  • A list of ex-PG&E camps
  • A list of every place the club has camped in the last 30 years
  • A list of places to consider next
  • Notes on specific campgrounds.

Most reservations are made on-line. Single sites, and State regional group sites, are usually reserved 6 months in advance; some up to 7 months, on the first of the month. National Park and busy Federal group sites (like near Yosemite) must be reserved a year in advance. (We reserved Death Valley for next year while we were still at the campground.) You should be “war-dialing” at 8:00 AM on opening day. Cancellation fees are minimal, so you can book backup sites. I will pass on:

  • Reservations for camping through October, and for March 2017, with alternates
  • For reference, all the reservation confirmations from the last 2 years, with prices
  • My meeting, telephone, and planning log.

Plan the Ride

This doesn’t have to be complicated. Ride planning can range from a full GPS route with a GPX file and turn-by-turn instructions, to a turns list alone, or just “follow me.” The ride to DV has been riders-choice so that people can take the time and amount of off-road that suits them. The only essential is that the meeting location and time be clearly called out, these are official meetings. Lat/Long alone may not be enough to get riders to remote locations due to map errors. On a guided ride, plan on a comfort stop an hour after breakfast, then two hours later. Riders should meet with full tanks and there should be a gas stop at about 125 miles.  The meeting is at 4PM in the dark season, and 5PM on daylight time, so get riders into camp in time to pitch tent and relax before we start.  A formal lunch stop is optional, usually on longer summer rides. Dinner should be part of the plan; if there is no catering, scout out local dining options or plan a shopping stop. Preview the ride, if only in a car, while looking for good stopping points and checking the accuracy of the instructions. Say Hello to the camp host and look at the cooking facilities and firewood availability. The new tour captain will receive:

  • GPS (.gpx) routes of every ride in the last 2 years, with written instructions and maps
  • GPS waypoints for restaurants, campgrounds, gas stations and restrooms.

Announce the Meeting

The bylaws are specific about advance notice of meetings in the newsletter. The tour captain can also post directly to the web page, which is official, and to Meetup, which is not, though it is very good at reaching new members. The Meetup file storage is good, and it’s easy to link to Meetup route instructions and GPS files from the web page. Announce the camping fee and ask the treasurer to make a payment link on the web page; ask campers to use it, even though some will still pay in camp. Make a payment link if there is catering, this cannot be paid on-site. Announce the breakfast meeting time and “stands up.”

  • Past postings on Meetup and the web will be good templates.

Lead the Ride

Go over the route and call out tricky intersections, signage and road conditions. Break the ride into two groups if you have a lot of riders and select a sweep for each group. Let riders know how long each stop is, and signal a few minutes before leaving time. There should not be riders in full gear, sweating and waiting, while the laggards hang around unready. Roll into camp triumphantly, then snag the best camping place for your own, you’ve earned it.

  • That’s me right behind you, with eyes on that nice spot.
