How to Choose a Christian Tour

Choosing a Christian tour that aligns with your interests, spiritual preferences, and travel expectations requires careful consideration.

Research Tour Operators

Look for reputable tour operators that specialize in Christian travel. Check their websites, read reviews, and assess their experience in organizing similar tours. Established companies often have a track record of delivering meaningful experiences.

Review Tour Itineraries

Examine the itineraries of various tours. Ensure that the destinations and activities offered resonate with your interests and spiritual goals. Look for tours that visit places you’ve always wanted to see or that offer unique opportunities for spiritual reflection.

Consider Group Size

Determine your preference for group size. Some travelers enjoy intimate, small-group experiences, while others prefer larger gatherings. Choose a tour that suits your comfort level and desire for personal connections.

Check Accommodations and Transportation

Verify the quality of accommodations and transportation provided during the tour. Comfortable lodging and efficient travel arrangements contribute to a more enjoyable experience.

Tour Leaders and Guides

Learn about the tour leaders and guides who will accompany you on the journey. Experienced and knowledgeable guides can enhance your understanding of the destinations’ cultural and spiritual significance.

Seek Spiritual Content

Assess the spiritual content and activities included in the tour. Some tours may offer daily devotionals, worship services, or prayer gatherings, while others may focus more on historical or cultural aspects.

Compare Costs and Inclusions

Compare the costs and what is included in each tour package. Take note of any additional fees or optional excursions. Consider the value of inclusions like meals, entrance fees, and guided tours.

Read Testimonials

Look for testimonials or reach out to previous participants to get firsthand feedback about their experiences with the tour operator and the overall trip.

Trust Your Instincts

Ultimately, trust your instincts and choose a tour that resonates with you on a spiritual and personal level. If a particular tour feels right in your heart, it’s likely the one that will offer you the most enriching experience.

How to Prepare for a Christian Tour

Preparing for a Christian tour involves a combination of practical considerations and spiritual readiness. Here are some steps to help you prepare for a meaningful and fulfilling Christian travel experience.

Define Your Purpose

Determine the purpose of your trip. Are you seeking a tour that focuses on spiritual growth, historical Bible sites, humanitarian outreach, or a mix of these elements? Understanding your intentions will guide your search.

Spiritual Preparation

Take time to pray and meditate on the purpose of the trip. Reflect on your spiritual goals and expectations for the journey. Consider reading relevant scriptures related to the destinations you’ll visit to deepen your understanding and connection.

Get to Know Fellow Participants

If possible, connect with other participants before the tour. Many tours have online groups or forums where you can introduce yourself, ask questions, and foster a sense of community before you even start your travels.

Understand Local Customs

Research the cultural norms and customs of the countries you’ll be visiting. Understanding and respecting local practices will help you make the most of your interactions and leave a positive impact.

Prepare Emotionally

Be open to new experiences and be willing to step out of your comfort zone. Traveling can sometimes be challenging, but approaching it with an open heart and a positive attitude can lead to transformative experiences.

Pack Thoughtfully

Pack appropriate clothing and essentials based on the destinations and activities on the tour. Don’t forget to include comfortable walking shoes, a Bible, a journal for personal reflections, and any items you use for daily devotionals.

Pack an Attitude of Gratitude

Approach the tour with an attitude of gratitude, knowing that this is an opportunity to grow spiritually, meet new people, and witness God’s beauty in different parts of the world.

As the demand for travel experiences catered to mature Christian singles continues to rise, an array of specialized tours awaits, promising an unforgettable blend of spiritual rejuvenation, breathtaking discoveries, and the boundless camaraderie that arises when hearts align in the pursuit of God’s grace across the globe.

Christian Cruises

CruiseMapper logo

At CruiseMapper's Christian Cruises dedicated page you can compare Christian-themed cruise travel vacations by line and destination. See what are the best Christian cruise lines and what their ships have to offer you as themes and itineraries schedule (departure dates and ports). This article is integrated with Cruises to Holy Land and our  Theme Cruises  hub.

Although not cheap, Christian cruise vacations for families have all the chances to become one of your family's best spiritual getaways! No matter if it's a ministry-organized group voyage, or just a family vacation focused on Christian values, "Christian Cruises" as themed voyages are a wonderful vacation option. On these, you can do both - indulge in the pampering elements of the cruise ship vacation, and satisfy your spiritual needs.

Christian Cruise Travel

If you are on a vacation budget, a ship cruise is among the best all-inclusive packages- everything is included and pre-planned. This simplifies packing and travel, enhancing your relaxation.

Christian Cruises - CruiseMapper

What is a Christian Cruise?

"Christian Cruises" incorporate inspirational speakers, teaching seminars, spiritual entertainment. These are the spots to find like-minded people, worship and pray as you sail. There are different types of Christian cruise deals. Some include Senior, Family, Couples and Singles Cruises.

The typical length of Christian Cruises varies from three up to eight days; their average cost ranges from $400 and up.

  • Pros - unforgettable spiritual voyages of a lifetime; all trip essentials included in one price; family-friendly environment and entertainment.
  • Cons - High cost of the vacation packages; not freestyle cruises- dress code may be uncomfortable for some guests; no variety in entertainment (particularly musical entertainment).

Many Christian Cruises are organized by a specific ministry or church organizations. They often opt for specialized themes, the most popular of which include:

  • Music cruises with popular Christian artists' songs;
  • Christian college cruises;
  • Ministerial voyages for church leadership figures;
  • Christian destination vacations that visit religious sites or trace Bible routes (Israel being among the world's most visited);
  • Specialized denomination voyages, planned to appeal to Episcopalians, Lutherans, Methodists, other Christianity sects;
  • Couples and Singles cruises which give members an opportunity to connect with people who share their faith;
  • Family voyages (mother and daughter) that unite families with Christian ideals and values.

Christian cruise ship activities

In addition to the inclusions of a typical cruise price (fine dining, games, entertainment), "Christian Cruises" provide a variety of activities. This way Christian passengers enjoy fellowship with other guests. Remember that group cruises do not usually require passengers' participation in any set number activities. There are options for everyone to try something fun that will help meet other individuals sharing the same religious beliefs. Each themed Christian cruise is quite different, but the typical onboard activities include:

  • Welcome receptions and Bible study
  • Worship services and Seminars on different religious topics
  • Christian themed games; Christian entertainment (Christian musicians, speakers, comedians)
  • Specialized shore excursions to famous religious sites, churches, temples.
  • Social activities (dances, slumber parties, group photographs, elegant receptions on formal nights).

How to choose between Christian cruise lines?

A large number of travel agencies plan regular Christian Cruises. A single agency only offers a few voyages each year. But if you investigate different travel agents, you will be able to find the voyage that appeals to you exactly. The most popular agencies, offering Christian cruise vacations are:

  • All Christian Cruises
  • Bountiful Travel
  • Christian Travel Finder
  • Inspiration Cruises
  • Matter of the Heart
  • Premier Experience
  • Temptation Tours

Christian cruise line ships have limited offers on Christian themed cruises per year. But they all sail to some of the world's most beautiful places! Usually, themed cruise deals are traded via themed travel agencies. Some travel agencies schedule a popular itinerary. Others vary destinations so that travelers have more options. Consider the following factors when you choose between all the "Christian cruise lines":

  • Cruise line/operator. The ones that frequently host themed Christian voyages are Carnival Cruise Line , Princess Cruises , Royal Caribbean International , Holland America, though other lines participate as well.
  • Destinations/itinerary. Christian themed cruises often include vacations to the Caribbean, Alaska, and Bahamas. Another very popular destinations are Mexico and Hawaii. Very special Mediterranean itineraries are the so-called "Holy Land Cruises"- to visit Israel, Egypt, Greece, and Turkey in one package deals.
  • Denomination. There are voyages focused on appealing to a specific sect. Others are appealing to all Christians.
  • Activity options. Carefully investigate the activities when you choose a Christian cruise- find those appealing to you. Some Christian music artists are popular for ones, but other passengers may prefer a quieter voyage.

Themed Christian cruise tours

If you are unable to find the ideal Christian cruise for your own vacation plans, work through the local church. There are lots of pre-planned Christian voyages available, but not every Christian likes to be involved in a structured getaway. Don't bother- it is easy to plan a Christian cruise on your own. The benefits of cruise vacations include the appeal of having meals, accommodations, travel, and destinations- all included in a single fare. There are also many activities provided, which appeal to all ages. Read the following tips which will add some spirituality to your Christian themed traveling experience:

  • Designate time for worship and prayer. Modern cruise ships offer small chapels; there are also many quiet places onboard suitable for a small group.
  • Avoid cruise ship's vices. Your personal behavior can be Christ-like everywhere, no matter where the voyage may be.
  • Choose educational tours. Instead of indulging on board, discover God's wonders in different destinations.

Christian cruise lines deals present the unique option for physically, mentally, and spiritually refreshing themed travel vacations. Choose preplanned theme cruises specific to your faith or just focus on spirituality while on vacation. Christian cruises offer something for everyone! Book today and get the best cabin locations and rates! Find out more from our selected Christian vacations below.

The Marriage Cruise for Christian Couples

The Marriage Cruise for Christian Couples

Ignite the spark in your marriage on an 8-night caribbean cruise while relaxing, exploring god’s creation, and having fun together., what if eight nights away with your spouse could change your entire life.

Whether you’ve been married for 5 years or 50, it’s easy to get wrapped up in day-to-day life, putting your spouse and your marriage on the back burner.

Even IF you make date nights a priority, it can be hard to find time to truly connect with each other amid all the other demands of daily life.

Eventually, you begin to lose touch. To feel distant. To forget what it was that brought you two together in the first place.

That’s why we created the Marriage Cruise for Christian Couples, a chance for couples to escape from the daily grind and focus on what really matters to you.

Departs February 1, 2025 for 8 nights

9 days / 8 nights aboard the celebrity reflection, fort lauderdale | grand cayman | aruba | curacao, a luxury cruise ship.

Topped with a half-acre of soft grass, the  Celebrity Reflection is a beautiful cruise ship with a plethora of amenities and plenty of room to socialize in the warm sea air. Savour fine dining that rivals anything you'd find on land. And discover even more ways to relax and renew.

Check out our previous cruise in this video:

Meet Your Hosts

Hello! We’re Caleb & Verlynda Simonyi-Gindele, co-hosts of  The Marriage Podcast for Smart People (with over 2 million downloads!). We share research-based and actionable steps every couple can take to strengthen their marriage. We live in  Saskatchewan, Canada, about 10 miles from the U.S. border and the state of North Dakota.

Together, we run a large counselling agency that serves hundreds of marriages each year. Caleb is a registered Clinical Counsellor (#4323) and Approved Clinical Supervisor with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors, a seasoned public speaker, and professional marriage therapist who serves as the Clinical Director of OnlyYouForever’s virtual counseling agency.

Verlynda is currently nearing the completion of her Master of Arts in Marriage & Family Therapy and supports the operations of our agency while building her clinical hours as an Intern.  She is the Group Coordinator for the cruise and will work directly with you to ensure your reservation is successful.

We are excited to be hosting our fifth Marriage Cruise For Christian Couples, where we will be sharing  Bible- and research-based lessons learned from a decade of helping couples create thriving, passionate marriages.

You are sure to see your marriage grow, renew and flourish as you discover new, deeper ways to connect and strengthen your love for one another.

How it works

The Marriage Cruise for Christian Couples is a small group retreat for couples looking for relaxation, renewal, romance, and life-long memories.

Aboard the Celebrity Reflection , your hosts Caleb & Verlynda Simonyi-Gindele will guide you through inspiring, entertaining, and educational messages that will transform your marriage. Enjoy great laughs with like-minded couples and quality time with your spouse while sailing on the amazing Caribbean Sea.

Enjoy a dip in the pool, relax with a couples' massage in the Spa, hit the gym, grab some soft serve ice cream or order room service. Whatever you'd like to do as a couple, there is a very good chance you'll be able to do it!

On the Marriage Cruise, couples will:

  • Discover deeper, lasting intimacy through research-backed and Bible-based learning
  • Learn and practice  communication and conflict-resolution tools that will help you both gain clarity and understanding
  • Build a legacy for the future by creating a shared vision for the next phase of your life together

Description

Our first group get-together is a chance to introduce yourselves (don't worry, no awkward group games!) and get to know Caleb & Verlynda while picking up your registration packet and retreat workbooks.

Session 1: Shortwave Radio Lessons

To truly hear and be heard without misunderstandings or unnecessary conflict.

Beginning with what may be the funniest marriage communication video of all time, you will learn how to use active listening to signal to your spouse that you are fully tracking with his or her comments. You’ll have repeated opportunities to practice this during the session 1 on 1 with your spouse, and with us coaching as we observe each couple implementing what you learn.

Session 2: Your Own Love Boat

To reignite or refuel the warmth in your marriage.

You will take a step back from day-to-day issues and explore and engage with each other over those precious aspects of one another’s character and worth that drew you together and continues to keep you together. Beautiful moments of sharing and appreciation will delight your hearts.

Session 3: Sex Ed for Experienced Couples

To learn to talk in a safe, caring, and effective way about the most intimate part of your marriage.

Did you know that even in successful marriages, less than 50% of the couple’s sexual experiences are deeply satisfying? Learn about sexual norms, the wonder of how your bodies are really working as you make love, and how to talk about what you are experiencing and enjoying as you make love. You’ll have some homework that we will not be discussing as a group the next morning!

Session 4: Your Safe Harbour

To set you up for deeper connection and support around life’s challenges

Marriage can be one of life’s strongholds against stress: a safe, secure harbour. Too often, we couples do not know how to effectively make that happen. Building on what you have already learned, you’ll take home tools to make this part of your marriage experience so much richer and your life so much less stressful.

Session 5: Who’s The Captain, Anyways?

To learn about power, influence and cooperation in your marriage

Learn more about how to extend acceptance to one another, how to give and receive influence, and how to share power in your marriage. Disagreement and different goals do not always need to lead to conflict! You’ll discover how to work together more effectively through day-to-day challenges as well as larger issues.

Session 6: Navigating Out of the Storm

To transform the way you interact around your most common areas of conflict

This couple’s exercise produces one of the greatest Aha! moments. You will finally understand why you get stuck on certain issues, how that happens and what is really going on deep inside yourself and your spouse. Equipped with this knowledge, I will show you how to transform those interactions into marriage-building moments rather than marriage-destroying events.

Session 7: Sailing Off Into the Sunset

To discover and build a plan for how to lead your lives and marriage toward creating a legacy

This is a beautiful, reflective exercise where you will map out your life as it was before this cruise. Then, you will have an opportunity to map out how you would like it to look after the cruise! Working together, you will come up with a plan for changing the most important areas.

Session 8: Wrap-up -- Land Ahoy!

To uncover how your marriage will transform by making changes that will last for years to come

the Conference Center 90 Minutes

This closing session will take you through specific tasks to identify and plan how to implement your learning once you are home. We are very purposeful about ensuring this cruise will transform your life rather than just being a flash in the pan. You will identify changes you’re ready to make, share those with each other, and then commit to implementing these once home. Don’t worry, we’ll help you keep it realistic and achievable!

What past cruisers have to say

One of the best outcomes we experienced from The Marriage Cruise for Christian Couples was the deeper conversation that resulted from what we learned and practiced during the seminar sessions. We learned the tools to communicate more deeply about our needs, dreams and feelings! It just helped us to feel more in touch with each other, and it felt safer to open up about things that I had been ignoring for a long time. Also, while we didn't anticipate this, we found the conversations and relationships we built with other couples to be amazing! And we really appreciated how accessible Caleb & Verlynda were during the cruise.

Nick & Kim Lezza

We’re always looking to grow as a couple and improve our communication, and saw this cruise and seminar as an opportunity to enrich our relationship. Caleb showed solid knowledge and understanding of behaviors and patterns in marriages, as well as scriptural examples and guidelines. We worked on communication strategies, mapped out goals and took home tools to help us deal with specific challenges. We were especially reminded to keep our energy focused where it needs to be; it is too easy to get caught up in a hectic life and get lazy in some areas of our relationship. The cruise was great, but the time spent with friends, both old and new, was even better! We would highly recommend the Marriage Cruise to couples at any stage of marriage.

Bob & Becky Macleod

One of our class assignments brought up an unresolved issue in our relationship. We had not been able to come to a place of peace about it, but this assignment brought clarity and resolution. We are enjoying the fruit of it still! We are so grateful for the time we spent with Caleb and Verlynda. Their teaching helped us to go deeper into a healthy marital relationship. We did this cruise for our 38 th  wedding anniversary. We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect addition to the cruise than to work on our marriage in Caleb and Verlynda’s seminars. They were truly one of the greatest highlights of the cruise. We would do it again in a heartbeat. An added joy was meeting other Christian couples and also meeting with our group for dinner a couple of evenings.

Many thanks to Caleb and Verlynda!

Howard & Katie S.

I am a fan of Caleb & Verlynda's  Marriage Podcast for Smart People : my husband Ron is the typical man who resisted marriage counseling. We were empty nesters travelling a divergent path. The cruise gave us hours for conversation, and the classes were succinct and provided us with many ideas that have brought us back to an appreciation for this life we had together. We look at each other more and at our phones less. We smile and touch and talk more. Caleb and Verlynda are truly gifted. The cruise was the perfect venue for this workshop.

Ron & Nancy Vinsant

We decided in the late fall of 2022 to sign up for the OnlyYouForever marriage cruise set to sail in February 2023. We had received an email about the event and since we had never gone on a cruise, we felt strongly that this was an opportunity to go and be with other Christian-minded couples, and at the same time, experience a cruise in the sunny south.

The cruise ship was the Celebrity Beyond: a beautiful, amazing ship that had pretty much anything you could want in a cruise ship. It was wonderful. The ports visited were great and the weather cooperated throughout!

That was a blessing, but we would definitely say that the experience was only further enhanced by being part of the OnlyYouForever marriage seminars. Caleb and Verlynda Simonyi-Gindele were excellent in the group marriage sessions, and we learned many valuable marriage enrichment tools that were God honouring and practical. Meeting with other Christian couples from all over Canada and the US was also a great experience! We were able to form some close friendships as a result.

We would highly recommend enjoying a cruise with The Marriage Cruise for Christian Couples hosted by Caleb & Verlynda from OnlyYouForever.com

Bill & Jennifer Bergsma

The cruise was a very special week bringing the relationship between my wife and me to a deeper understanding and appreciation for each other. Our lives were devoted to raising our children, and now that they are launched, it seemed like our purpose for all these 20-plus years had ended. This week has helped us to set goals and look forward to the next phase of our relationship together, just the two of us. We came to understand and appreciate in a meaningful way what each of us desires in the years to come. It really taught us how to work through our differences and communicate with each other: to be able to talk and to listen with respect. I highly recommend this cruise for understanding and respecting your spouse and growing deeper in your relationship.

DJ & Dawn Defreece

Ready to set sail.

Make 2025 the year your marriage turns a corner and becomes filled with joy, connection, and satisfaction.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. how many rooms are available.

We have 18 rooms available initially, though we can reserve additional rooms if these spots fill up.

2. Is this just for couples with big problems?

No, quite the contrary. This is for couples who want to better adjust to common challenges and otherwise capitalize on their strengths to take their marriage to the next level. Couples who face severe challenges will benefit from this cruise only if they have several counselling sessions under their belt before attending. There's still plenty of time to arrange those sessions before the cruise leaves! This Cruise is not recommended for abusive marriages. Also, if you or your spouse are in sex addiction recovery, we recommend at least one year of sobriety and recovery work before participating in our retreats so that you can benefit from the content.

3. Will we have to share about our relationship with other people?

It's up to you! The seminars and work you will be doing in them is geared towards getting you and your spouse talking to each other most of all. All exercises are couple-based but there are opportunities for group Q&A and discussion.

As you mingle with other couples you may find that through casual conversation you have common struggles and will benefit from those interactions. Basically, you can be as private or open as you wish to be.

In past cruises, our couples have commented on how safe and comfortable it was to share. Nobody is forced to share and we all have common struggles, so it's easy to participate once you get a feel for how the sessions are structured.

4. Are we going to have time just to ourselves?

Yes, and plenty of it! Before departing, you will have the timing and location of all the seminars on board the ship. Research shows that marriage retreats of this length are most effective with about 12 hours of seminar time, and we have been very intentional about planning the sessions so that we spend more time as a group on the sea days and have shorter sessions when the ship is in port so that you are free to enjoy excursions during the at-port time. You will also have a little marriage-enriching and enjoyable "homework" (don't worry, it will not feel like work!) between sessions.

I do have one recommendation for you and your spouse: Try at least one excursion that involves an element of risk. Something out of your comfort zone. Why? Because the research shows that taking risks together increases your attraction to one another! You'll get an adrenaline buzz and a romance boost as well!

5. Can we bring our children?

We recognize that time away from children can be a blessing to parents. However, we also understand this is not always possible! You may certainly choose to bring your family if you like.

Our only stipulation for the retreat is that the seminars are for you and your spouse only.

Celebrity offers options for children up to the age of 12, and KidzClub 13+.

Still have questions?

We'd be happy to answer them!! We welcome your questions:

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Kremlin in the times of Ivan III

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. Members of Christ Church sing a hymn during ‘psalm sing;’ in September, outside city hall in Moscow, Idaho. Church members were protesting against an order that requires people to either socially distance or wear a face mask in public.

‘Make it a Christian town’: the ultra-conservative church on the rise in Idaho

Increased influence of Christ Church, whose leader wants to create US ‘theocracy’, comes as social conservatives aim to gain traction

A Guardian investigation has revealed that a controversial church whose leader has openly expressed the ambition of creating a “theocracy” in America has accumulated significant influence in the city of Moscow, Idaho .

Christ Church has a stated goal to “make Moscow a Christian town” and public records, interviews, and open source materials online show how its leadership has extended its power and activities in the town.

Church figures have browbeaten elected officials over Covid restrictions, built powerful institutions in parallel to secular government, harassed perceived opponents, and accumulated land and businesses in pursuit of a long-term goal of transforming America into a nation ruled according to its own, ultra-conservative moral precepts.

The rise of Christ Church may be playing out in a small Idaho city but it comes at a time when the US is roiled by the far right, including Christian nationalism, and when social conservatives are seeking to roll back basic tenets of US life such as legal abortion, as well as dominating powerful national institutions, such as the supreme court.

While the church’s previous controversies have centered on its founder and pastor, Douglas Wilson, a new generation of male church leaders – including Wilson’s son – have found ways to expand the church’s reach in Moscow and beyond, even gaining footholds in mainstream popular culture in the broader US.

In recent months, Christ Church has advocated for resistance to Covid mandates in Moscow, and Wilson has attempted to give theological ballast to opposition to restrictions and vaccination programs, as well as warning of political violence.

Last month, a video version of a post by Wilson at his well-read blog was removed from YouTube. The blogpost , entitled “A Biblical Defense of Fake Vaccine IDs”, was based on a conspiracy theory asserting that the vaccine response was a “power play” on the part of the Biden administration, which intended to leave the restrictions in place permanently.

Wilson further claimed that “we are not yet in a hot civil war, with shooting and all, but we are in a cold war/civil war” and urged readers to “resist openly, in concert with any others in your same position”, claiming that this would not be “rebellion against lawful authority” but “an example of a free people refusing to go along with their own enslavement”.

The post was met with outrage, including from other prominent evangelicals .

That was not the only time that Wilson’s activities and positions have led to criticism from other evangelicals, and associations with Wilson have led to crises in other churches.

In recent months, members and clergy resigned from Minneapolis’s Bethlehem Baptist church, and staff resigned from its associated Bethlehem College and Seminary (BCS), in part over the appearance of newly appointed BCS president Joe Rigney on Man Rampant , a video series hosted by Wilson and streamed on platforms including Amazon Prime. The show promotes Wilson’s long-held position that men need to assert themselves in society .

Christ Church was founded in Moscow in the 1990s, and experts who have studied the church estimate the size of the congregation and its offshoot churches at about 2,000, or 10% of the city’s total population.

But they also say that the church is increasingly drawing people to the area who are attracted to the idea of northern Idaho as a conservative “redoubt” against American modernity, and by the church’s “ reconstructionist ” position, which holds that the world will need to be governed according to their interpretation of biblical morality before Christ returns to earth.

Christ Church’s previous controversies have garnered national attention.

Recent reporting focused attention once more on the church’s – and Wilson’s – handling of a series of sexual abuse cases, and the theological subordination of women.

In 2005, Wilson asked a judge for leniency in the case of Stephen Sitler, a former student at a Christ Church-aligned college, New Saint Andrews College (NSAC). Sitler was at that time convicted of sex offenses involving children.

After his release on probation in 2007, Sitler was married in Christ Church in 2010, by Wilson, to a woman who, by Sitler’s and her account, had been introduced to him by Edwin Iverson, then a Christ Church elder and now pastor of a Communion of Reformed Evangelical Churches (CREC) church in Colville, Washington.

Wilson has faced scrutiny over other positions.

In the early 2000s, Wilson received criticism over a book, Southern Slavery as it Was, which he had co-written in the previous decade with J Steven Wilkins. Wilkins is a Louisiana pastor who was a co-founder of the neo-Confederate organization, the League of the South. His church is a member of Wilson’s congregational umbrella group, the CREC.

The book depicted slavery in the antebellum southern United States as “a relationship based upon mutual affection and confidence”, and argued that the enslaved enjoyed “a life of plenty, of simple pleasures, of food, clothes, and good medical care”.

Wilson has repeatedly disavowed any interest in national electoral politics, but Christ Church’s eventual aim is what Wilson explicitly describes in a 2016 book as “theocracy”, or “a network of nations bound together by a formal acknowledgement of the lordship of Jesus Christ”, as opposed to secular society ruled by “civil governments, [which] are in necessary degrees satanic, demonic, and influenced by the god of this world, who is the devil”.

These beliefs have led Christ Church into conflicts with local government, but additionally, Wilson and other Christ Church members have founded a range of local and national institutions which are affiliated with or sponsored by the church.

Christ Church itself is an unincorporated nonprofit, which means that it is not obliged to provide details of its finances to government authorities. Many entities associated with the church are either also unincorporated, like the Logos School, or, like publisher Canon Press, are operated by a network of limited liability companies (LLCs) which are similarly limited in their accountability.

But insiders who spoke on condition of anonymity said that all members tithe 10% of their household income, and wealthier members are expected to make an even larger contribution.

Within a network of educational institutions, publishing houses, churches, and national associations that Wilson has founded or led, a small number of men, from a small number of families, have come to exert significant power within the organisation and Moscow.

Not least among these is Wilson’s own family, with him as its head.

The Kenworthy Performing Arts Centre in Moscow, Idaho, during the coronavirus outbreak in April last year.

At NSAC, for example, the college president is Wilson’s son-in-law, Ben Merkle. Another son-in-law, Luke Jankovic, sits on the board of trustees, as does Wilson himself and Christ Church’s associate pastor, Toby Sumpter.

Douglas Wilson is also on faculty at NSAC, and is listed as a senior fellow in theology. Also on faculty are his son Nathan (ND) Wilson, a fellow of literature; and his brother, Gordon Wilson, a self-described “young earth creationist” who believes that God created the earth in seven days, is senior fellow of natural history.

According to tax filings, Merkle and Gordon Wilson each draw salaries from the college, which lists tuition and costs for undergraduate students at $19,900 per year.

Merkle, Jankovic, and all three Wilson men are also elders at Christ Church, along with a founding director and former trustee at NSAC, Moscow resident Andrew Crapuchettes.

Until June 2021, when the company was acquired by a competitor, Crapuchettes had been chief executive of Moscow’s largest private employer, EMSI, for more than 19 years.

During that period, EMSI was a major employer of NSAC graduates. According to LinkedIn data, there are 55 current employees at EMSI who are NSAC graduates, from a college which has graduated only 635 people throughout its history.

In addition, a number of Christ Church elders hold senior positions at EMSI. They include Luke Jankovic – the NSAC trustee who is Wilson’s son-in-law – who is now executive vice-president of higher education.

Also, EMSI’s chief operations officer and chief financial officer is Timothy van den Broek, a teaching elder at Trinity Reformed church, Christ Church’s suburban offshoot.

Van den Broek began his career at EMSI immediately after graduating from NSAC, and he sits on the boards of church-aligned businesses and organizations, including the charity, the Hope Center, and Classic Learning Initiatives, which aims to devise alternative standardized testing for students at Christian private schools who wish to attend private Christian universities like NSAC.

Since his departure from EMSI, Andrew Crapuchettes has started a new venture, a jobs website called Red Balloon, which advertises itself as connecting “employers who value freedom with employees who value it too”, in “a world beyond cancel culture, where employees are free to work … without fear that they will find themselves on the wrong side of their employer’s politics”.

Many of the website’s initial clients appeared to be either church run or founded organizations, or companies belonging to other church members.

Now, Crapuchettes has branched out into property development, and this year won approval from Moscow city council for the “annexation” of 27 acres of land on Moscow’s south-western edge for a new, 109 unit subdivision called Edington.

A local businessman, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that the church already had a disproportionate presence in the downtown area, and that developments like Edington were evidence that “they are trying to attract more people here”.

He added that the church’s anti-mask and anti-vaccination positions, as well as its attempts to “take over local institutions” like a food co-op, had polarized the community.

He also referred to an ad for New Saint Andrews College that had been seen as transphobic by many in Moscow had “galvanized the town against them”. He called it a demonstration of the church’s preparedness “to throw red meat and recruit on the basis of hate”.

In response to detailed emailed questions about various aspects of Christ Church’s operations, Douglas Wilson did not offer any specific response, but wrote that the Guardian’s “approach illustrates an absurd fixation and anti-church bigotry that we have come to expect from certain elements of the leftist media”.

Asked about EMSI’s hiring practices under his leadership, Andrew Crapuchettes wrote that: “Under my watch, EMSI grew into a global company with offices on two continents, and in an ever-tightening labor market, we hired talent wherever we could find it, including from the 3 local colleges – Washington State, University of Idaho and New Saint Andrews.”

This article was amended on 12 November 2021 to correctly refer to the Communion of Reformed Evangelical Churches, rather than the Council of Reformed Evangelical Churches.

In Transit: Notes from the Underground

Jun 06 2018.

Spend some time in one of Moscow’s finest museums.

Subterranean commuting might not be anyone’s idea of a good time, but even in a city packing the war-games treasures and priceless bejeweled eggs of the Kremlin Armoury and the colossal Soviet pavilions of the VDNKh , the Metro holds up as one of Moscow’s finest museums. Just avoid rush hour.

The Metro is stunning and provides an unrivaled insight into the city’s psyche, past and present, but it also happens to be the best way to get around. Moscow has Uber, and the Russian version called Yandex Taxi , but also some nasty traffic. Metro trains come around every 90 seconds or so, at a more than 99 percent on-time rate. It’s also reasonably priced, with a single ride at 55 cents (and cheaper in bulk). From history to tickets to rules — official and not — here’s what you need to know to get started.

A Brief Introduction Buying Tickets Know Before You Go (Down) Rules An Easy Tour

A Brief Introduction

Moscow’s Metro was a long time coming. Plans for rapid transit to relieve the city’s beleaguered tram system date back to the Imperial era, but a couple of wars and a revolution held up its development. Stalin revived it as part of his grand plan to modernize the Soviet Union in the 1920s and 30s. The first lines and tunnels were constructed with help from engineers from the London Underground, although Stalin’s secret police decided that they had learned too much about Moscow’s layout and had them arrested on espionage charges and deported.

The beauty of its stations (if not its trains) is well-documented, and certainly no accident. In its illustrious first phases and particularly after the Second World War, the greatest architects of Soviet era were recruited to create gleaming temples celebrating the Revolution, the USSR, and the war triumph. No two stations are exactly alike, and each of the classic showpieces has a theme. There are world-famous shrines to Futurist architecture, a celebration of electricity, tributes to individuals and regions of the former Soviet Union. Each marble slab, mosaic tile, or light fixture was placed with intent, all in service to a station’s aesthetic; each element, f rom the smallest brass ear of corn to a large blood-spattered sword on a World War II mural, is an essential part of the whole.

The Metro is a monument to the Soviet propaganda project it was intended to be when it opened in 1935 with the slogan “Building a Palace for the People”. It brought the grand interiors of Imperial Russia to ordinary Muscovites, celebrated the Soviet Union’s past achievements while promising its citizens a bright Soviet future, and of course, it was a show-piece for the world to witness the might and sophistication of life in the Soviet Union.

It may be a museum, but it’s no relic. U p to nine million people use it daily, more than the London Underground and New York Subway combined. (Along with, at one time, about 20 stray dogs that learned to commute on the Metro.)

In its 80+ year history, the Metro has expanded in phases and fits and starts, in step with the fortunes of Moscow and Russia. Now, partly in preparation for the World Cup 2018, it’s also modernizing. New trains allow passengers to walk the entire length of the train without having to change carriages. The system is becoming more visitor-friendly. (There are helpful stickers on the floor marking out the best selfie spots .) But there’s a price to modernity: it’s phasing out one of its beloved institutions, the escalator attendants. Often they are middle-aged or elderly women—“ escalator grandmas ” in news accounts—who have held the post for decades, sitting in their tiny kiosks, scolding commuters for bad escalator etiquette or even bad posture, or telling jokes . They are slated to be replaced, when at all, by members of the escalator maintenance staff.

For all its achievements, the Metro lags behind Moscow’s above-ground growth, as Russia’s capital sprawls ever outwards, generating some of the world’s worst traffic jams . But since 2011, the Metro has been in the middle of an ambitious and long-overdue enlargement; 60 new stations are opening by 2020. If all goes to plan, the 2011-2020 period will have brought 125 miles of new tracks and over 100 new stations — a 40 percent increase — the fastest and largest expansion phase in any period in the Metro’s history.

Buying Tickets

  • Ticket machines have a button to switch to English.
  • You can buy specific numbers of rides: 1, 2, 5, 11, 20, or 60. Hold up fingers to show how many rides you want to buy.
  • There is also a 90-minute ticket , which gets you 1 trip on the metro plus an unlimited number of transfers on other transport (bus, tram, etc) within 90 minutes.
  • Or, you can buy day tickets with unlimited rides: one day (218₽/ US$4), three days (415₽/US$7) or seven days (830₽/US$15). Check the rates here to stay up-to-date.
  • If you’re going to be using the Metro regularly over a few days, it’s worth getting a Troika card , a contactless, refillable card you can use on all public transport. Using the Metro is cheaper with one of these: a single ride is 36₽, not 55₽. Buy them and refill them in the Metro stations, and they’re valid for 5 years, so you can keep it for next time. Or, if you have a lot of cash left on it when you leave, you can get it refunded at the Metro Service Centers at Ulitsa 1905 Goda, 25 or at Staraya Basmannaya 20, Building 1.
  • You can also buy silicone bracelets and keychains with built-in transport chips that you can use as a Troika card. (A Moscow Metro Fitbit!) So far, you can only get these at the Pushkinskaya metro station Live Helpdesk and souvenir shops in the Mayakovskaya and Trubnaya metro stations. The fare is the same as for the Troika card.
  • You can also use Apple Pay and Samsung Pay.

Rules, spoken and unspoken

No smoking, no drinking, no filming, no littering. Photography is allowed, although it used to be banned.

Stand to the right on the escalator. Break this rule and you risk the wrath of the legendary escalator attendants. (No shenanigans on the escalators in general.)

Get out of the way. Find an empty corner to hide in when you get off a train and need to stare at your phone. Watch out getting out of the train in general; when your train doors open, people tend to appear from nowhere or from behind ornate marble columns, walking full-speed.

Always offer your seat to elderly ladies (what are you, a monster?).

An Easy Tour

This is no Metro Marathon ( 199 stations in 20 hours ). It’s an easy tour, taking in most—though not all—of the notable stations, the bulk of it going clockwise along the Circle line, with a couple of short detours. These stations are within minutes of one another, and the whole tour should take about 1-2 hours.

Start at Mayakovskaya Metro station , at the corner of Tverskaya and Garden Ring,  Triumfalnaya Square, Moskva, Russia, 125047.

1. Mayakovskaya.  Named for Russian Futurist Movement poet Vladimir Mayakovsky and an attempt to bring to life the future he imagined in his poems. (The Futurist Movement, natch, was all about a rejecting the past and celebrating all things speed, industry, modern machines, youth, modernity.) The result: an Art Deco masterpiece that won the National Grand Prix for architecture at the New York World’s Fair in 1939. It’s all smooth, rounded shine and light, and gentle arches supported by columns of dark pink marble and stainless aircraft steel. Each of its 34 ceiling niches has a mosaic. During World War II, the station was used as an air-raid shelter and, at one point, a bunker for Stalin. He gave a subdued but rousing speech here in Nov. 6, 1941 as the Nazis bombed the city above.

Take the 3/Green line one station to:

2. Belorusskaya. Opened in 1952, named after the connected Belarussky Rail Terminal, which runs trains between Moscow and Belarus. This is a light marble affair with a white, cake-like ceiling, lined with Belorussian patterns and 12 Florentine ceiling mosaics depicting life in Belarussia when it was built.

christian singles cruises 2022

Transfer onto the 1/Brown line. Then, one stop (clockwise) t o:

3. Novoslobodskaya.  This station was designed around the stained-glass panels, which were made in Latvia, because Alexey Dushkin, the Soviet starchitect who dreamed it up (and also designed Mayakovskaya station) couldn’t find the glass and craft locally. The stained glass is the same used for Riga’s Cathedral, and the panels feature plants, flowers, members of the Soviet intelligentsia (musician, artist, architect) and geometric shapes.

christian singles cruises 2022

Go two stops east on the 1/Circle line to:

4. Komsomolskaya. Named after the Komsomol, or the Young Communist League, this might just be peak Stalin Metro style. Underneath the hub for three regional railways, it was intended to be a grand gateway to Moscow and is today its busiest station. It has chandeliers; a yellow ceiling with Baroque embellishments; and in the main hall, a colossal red star overlaid on golden, shimmering tiles. Designer Alexey Shchusev designed it as an homage to the speech Stalin gave at Red Square on Nov. 7, 1941, in which he invoked Russia’s illustrious military leaders as a pep talk to Soviet soldiers through the first catastrophic year of the war.   The station’s eight large mosaics are of the leaders referenced in the speech, such as Alexander Nevsky, a 13th-century prince and military commander who bested German and Swedish invading armies.

christian singles cruises 2022

One more stop clockwise to Kurskaya station,  and change onto the 3/Blue  line, and go one stop to:

5. Baumanskaya.   Opened in 1944. Named for the Bolshevik Revolutionary Nikolai Bauman , whose monument and namesake district are aboveground here. Though he seemed like a nasty piece of work (he apparently once publicly mocked a woman he had impregnated, who later hung herself), he became a Revolutionary martyr when he was killed in 1905 in a skirmish with a monarchist, who hit him on the head with part of a steel pipe. The station is in Art Deco style with atmospherically dim lighting, and a series of bronze sculptures of soldiers and homefront heroes during the War. At one end, there is a large mosaic portrait of Lenin.

christian singles cruises 2022

Stay on that train direction one more east to:

6. Elektrozavodskaya. As you may have guessed from the name, this station is the Metro’s tribute to all thing electrical, built in 1944 and named after a nearby lightbulb factory. It has marble bas-relief sculptures of important figures in electrical engineering, and others illustrating the Soviet Union’s war-time struggles at home. The ceiling’s recurring rows of circular lamps give the station’s main tunnel a comforting glow, and a pleasing visual effect.

christian singles cruises 2022

Double back two stops to Kurskaya station , and change back to the 1/Circle line. Sit tight for six stations to:

7. Kiyevskaya. This was the last station on the Circle line to be built, in 1954, completed under Nikita Khrushchev’ s guidance, as a tribute to his homeland, Ukraine. Its three large station halls feature images celebrating Ukraine’s contributions to the Soviet Union and Russo-Ukrainian unity, depicting musicians, textile-working, soldiers, farmers. (One hall has frescoes, one mosaics, and the third murals.) Shortly after it was completed, Khrushchev condemned the architectural excesses and unnecessary luxury of the Stalin era, which ushered in an epoch of more austere Metro stations. According to the legend at least, he timed the policy in part to ensure no Metro station built after could outshine Kiyevskaya.

christian singles cruises 2022

Change to the 3/Blue line and go one stop west.

8. Park Pobedy. This is the deepest station on the Metro, with one of the world’s longest escalators, at 413 feet. If you stand still, the escalator ride to the surface takes about three minutes .) Opened in 2003 at Victory Park, the station celebrates two of Russia’s great military victories. Each end has a mural by Georgian artist Zurab Tsereteli, who also designed the “ Good Defeats Evil ” statue at the UN headquarters in New York. One mural depicts the Russian generals’ victory over the French in 1812 and the other, the German surrender of 1945. The latter is particularly striking; equal parts dramatic, triumphant, and gruesome. To the side, Red Army soldiers trample Nazi flags, and if you look closely there’s some blood spatter among the detail. Still, the biggest impressions here are the marble shine of the chessboard floor pattern and the pleasingly geometric effect if you view from one end to the other.

christian singles cruises 2022

Keep going one more stop west to:

9. Slavyansky Bulvar.  One of the Metro’s youngest stations, it opened in 2008. With far higher ceilings than many other stations—which tend to have covered central tunnels on the platforms—it has an “open-air” feel (or as close to it as you can get, one hundred feet under). It’s an homage to French architect Hector Guimard, he of the Art Nouveau entrances for the Paris M é tro, and that’s precisely what this looks like: A Moscow homage to the Paris M é tro, with an additional forest theme. A Cyrillic twist on Guimard’s Metro-style lettering over the benches, furnished with t rees and branch motifs, including creeping vines as towering lamp-posts.

christian singles cruises 2022

Stay on the 3/Blue line and double back four stations to:

10. Arbatskaya. Its first iteration, Arbatskaya-Smolenskaya station, was damaged by German bombs in 1941. It was rebuilt in 1953, and designed to double as a bomb shelter in the event of nuclear war, although unusually for stations built in the post-war phase, this one doesn’t have a war theme. It may also be one of the system’s most elegant: Baroque, but toned down a little, with red marble floors and white ceilings with gilded bronze c handeliers.

christian singles cruises 2022

Jump back on the 3/Blue line  in the same direction and take it one more stop:

11. Ploshchad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square). Opened in 1938, and serving Red Square and the Kremlin . Its renowned central hall has marble columns flanked by 76 bronze statues of Soviet heroes: soldiers, students, farmers, athletes, writers, parents. Some of these statues’ appendages have a yellow sheen from decades of Moscow’s commuters rubbing them for good luck. Among the most popular for a superstitious walk-by rub: the snout of a frontier guard’s dog, a soldier’s gun (where the touch of millions of human hands have tapered the gun barrel into a fine, pointy blade), a baby’s foot, and a woman’s knee. (A brass rooster also sports the telltale gold sheen, though I am told that rubbing the rooster is thought to bring bad luck. )

Now take the escalator up, and get some fresh air.
