Key takeaways

  • Capital One's travel portal offers a convenient way to book flights, hotels and cars with your card and/or Capital One miles.
  • The portal features price prediction technology, price alerts and a best price match guarantee to help users save money on their bookings.
  • While easy to use, cardholders likely get more value from their Capital One miles by transferring them to travel loyalty program partners.

Since launching in fall 2021, Capital One’s travel portal, aptly named Capital One Travel, has continued to innovate in building tools to help book and plan your next trip. The portal provides a seamless way to book trips, hotels and cars with your card and/or your Capital One miles. With access to exclusive hotel programs alongside trip pricing tools powered by Hopper, a well-known travel technology company, the portal can be a great asset when researching and booking your travel needs.

This guide will explain more about the portal, including how to use all the bells and whistles it offers, such as price prediction, price watch, price drop protections and the ability to cancel bookings for any reason. This guide will also help you make the most of your hard-earned rewards and cardholder benefits.

What is Capital One Travel?

Capital One Travel is the travel rewards portal that allows Capital One cardholders to book travel accommodations with their credit card rewards (and cash if needed). The portal is similar to offerings provided by American Express and Chase, among other issuers, to help cardholders more easily book their next trip and redeem their rewards. These branded travel portals act as a travel search engine to help cardholders redeem travel rewards and find better deals in the process.

Access the full slate of benefits at Capital One Travel by signing into your Capital One account. Once you decide on the travel to book, you can choose to pay for it using an eligible credit card or, if you have a bank of Capital One miles, you can redeem them directly for your booking.

Who can use the Capital One Travel Portal?

Any Capital One rewards cardholder is eligible to use the travel portal for their needs, even if your card earns cash back instead of Capital One miles . Many other issuers reserve their travel portals solely for cardholders with a premium travel card .

If you have one or more of the following Capital One credit cards , you’re eligible to use the travel portal and earn elevated rewards on certain travel booked through it:

Additional Capital One cards, such as the Capital One Quicksilver Student Rewards Credit Card , give cardholders access to the portal, but don’t offer elevated rewards on bookings.

Benefits of using Capital One Travel

Capital One has partnered with travel technology company Hopper to power the portal. Together, they have added features to help you book your trip with confidence and provide additional context to your searches. Here are some of the key benefits and offerings including within the travel portal:

Price prediction technology

When searching for flights in Capital One Travel, the tool will help you pay the best possible price by alerting you if the price available is likely to drop or increase. If they do not recommend purchasing at that moment, they offer an easy way to be alerted when the price does drop. With billions of flight price data points captured every day, the issuer claims that this technology can predict flight prices with 95 percent accuracy.

You can use the travel portal’s booking feature to place a reservation for a flight right away or wait for a better price. The price prediction tool will recommend the best time to book your flight, which could help you save up to 15 percent on your flight.

Price alerts on flights

Maybe you aren’t quite ready to book yet, but want to start gathering info. Capital One allows you to monitor flights and can notify you via email when there is a price change. These alerts can help you decide when to book your ticket.

Screenshot provided by Will Esslifie

Price drop prediction

Once you buy a ticket via the portal after using the price prediction tool, Capital One will continue to monitor ticket prices for the next 10 days. If the ticket price drops below what you paid in that time span, Capital One will provide you with up to $50 in travel credit to cover the difference.

Best price match guarantee

Capital One will refund the difference for the price of a flight, hotel or rental car as travel credit if you find a better price on another site within 24 hours of booking with Capital One Travel. Submit a price match claim by contacting Capital One Travel via the help center or by calling them at 844-422-6922. Remember, the refund will come in the form of travel credits to use for future Capital One Travel bookings.

Price freeze

If you aren’t quite ready to book your flight, you can pay a small fee to “freeze” the flight price until you are ready to confirm the booking. Capital One will hold that price for you until the expiration date of your frozen price. Look for the expiration date before you complete your purchase.

For example, you could freeze the price on a ticket from Miami, Florida to Lima, Peru for $9 or 900 miles per person. Be sure to review the terms and timeline for your price freeze on the portal before freezing a price.

Screenshot provided by Will Esslifie

Cancel for any reason coverage

This feature can provide some flexibility to your travel bookings as needed. For a fee, this option allows you to cancel your flight — with no penalties — up to a set time within 24 hours prior to your scheduled departure. Depending on the terms of your booking, you will have the option to receive a refund ranging from 70 percent to 100 percent of your flight’s costs.

How to book with Capital One Travel

Here’s how to book flights, hotels and car rentals through the travel portal:

Book flights in the Capital One travel portal

To book a flight from the portal, select the Flights option from the portal homepage. From there, you can enter the cities you wish to travel between and fill out all the necessary information.

Screenshot provided by Will Esslifie

As you go to select your travel date(s), the portal will provide a helpful color-coded guide alerting you of the price variances by day. If you’ve got some flexibility, you can choose from different pricing categories to get lower fares:

Screenshot provided by Will Esslifie

You can also filter your results by airline, price, number of stops, time, flight number and other preferences.

Once you arrive at a ticket you’d like to book, you can follow the prompts to choose the fare options you want. Right before checking out, you’ll see the option to freeze your fare until you are ready to book, which you can pay for in miles or cash. If you don’t want to freeze your fare, you can continue to the checkout where you’ll choose your seat and how you want to pay.

Book hotels in the Capital One Travel portal

The process of booking hotel accommodations is similar to booking airfare; simply search for hotels by location and date. From there, you can filter properties for specific amenities, such as parking or breakfast. The search results page will show you a map with hotel locations, price per night and the total price. The portal also provides the TripAdvisor rating of that particular property as well.

Book car rentals in the Capital One Travel portal

You can also book a rental car through the Capital One portal. Once you’ve entered your desired pickup and dropoff locations, you can go through the options to narrow them down based on the rental company, cost or your specific needs.

Should you book travel through Capital One Travel?

Whether you should book travel via the Capital One Travel portal depends on your goals and needs, but there are some common pros and cons.

Pros of booking with Capital One Travel

  • Price freeze . The price freeze feature is an affordable way to hold on to a potential booking while considering your options. This can be a great way to save time and money when planning your next trip.
  • Additional bonus points . Booking through the Capital One travel portal with an eligible card can provide additional bonus Capital One miles, helping you accrue more points to redeem towards future travel.
  • Price match guarantee . With the price match guarantee, you can feel confident knowing that if the price drops, you can receive credits to cover the price difference.

Cons of booking with Capital One Travel

  • Not all flights featured . Capital One Travel may not have access to all possible flights. For example, Southwest flights will not be viewable in the portal, so you may need to review other sites in addition to the portal to find the best flight for your needs.
  • Limited benefits with loyalty programs . Hotels usually require you to book directly with them to enjoy elite perks. As a result, booking through the portal may make you ineligible for certain perks if you are a member of a hotel or rental car loyalty program. Be sure to check their rules before completing your booking.
  • May not earn loyalty rewards. Usually hotels, and sometimes airlines, won’t award loyalty points for bookings made through third-party travel portals.
  • Lack of travel packages . The travel portal currently does not allow cardholders to book travel packages, though you can group different types of travel accommodations in one itinerary and pay for them at the same time.

The portal can be a helpful component of your travel booking process. But even if Capital One Travel becomes your go-to for booking travel, don’t forget to check other booking options to make sure you’re getting the best deal.

Other options for redeeming your Capital One miles

In addition to the travel portal, Capital One offers cardholders additional ways to redeem their miles. Additional options include:

Transfer miles to travel partners

It can be advantageous to transfer your miles to one of Capital One’s transfer partners . This option may save money if your miles pick up more value upon transfer. In fact, Capital One miles are worth just 1 cent each when redeemed through the portal or for statement credit to cover a travel purchase; however, they’re worth an average of 1.7 each when transferred to a high-value travel partner, according to Bankrate’s latest valuations.

Most partners allow transfers at a 1:1 ratio, but Capital One sometimes runs promotions in which you can transfer miles and receive a bonus with the transfer partner. For instance, at the time of publishing, cardholders could receive 1,300 Virgin Points for every 1,000 Capital One miles transferred.

Screenshot provided by Will Esslifie

To complete a transfer, you will need to link your loyalty program account to your Capital One account. Once you have your member number, you can plug it into the miles transfer screen, and Capital One will move your miles to the loyalty program of your choice. The transfer process may be immediate or could take a few hours. When the miles appear in your loyalty membership account, you can then book your travel directly through the travel brand where you transferred your points.

Cover past travel purchases

You can use your Capital One miles to cover travel purchases up to 90 days old. Although there’s no guarantee exactly how your travel purchases will be coded, generally, Capital One miles will cover travel-related expenses such as airfare, hotel stays, train tickets, car rentals, limousine services, bus tickets, cruises, taxis, travel agents and timeshares.

The bottom line

The Capital One Travel portal can be a great way to book your next trip. With its price prediction technology, price freezes and other tools designed to make trip planning a breeze, it’s a useful benefit accessible to Capital One rewards cardholders.

Keep in mind that the most lucrative travel rewards strategies, however, usually involve more than one travel rewards currency, so check out other travel rewards cards if you’re on a journey to maximize your credit card rewards.

The best ways to redeem Capital One miles for domestic flights

Benji Stawski

Update: Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .

When Capital One introduced airline transfer partners , it was a game-changer for Capital One miles collectors. It provided an opportunity for bargain hunters to squeeze even more value from the rewards earned on cards like the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card.

There are now 14 frequent-flyer programs to which you can transfer your miles, most at a 1:1 ratio . However, with no U.S. carriers on the list anymore, you'll have to know just how to leverage airline partnerships if you're looking to book a domestic flight.

In today's post, we'll examine the best options for transferring Capital One miles to airline partners when you need to book a domestic flight. And we'll also look at how to decide when to use this option versus redeeming Capital One miles at a fixed value .

Capital One transfer partners

Let's start with a high-level overview of the program's transfer partners and what it will take to book a flight within the U.S. Here's a chart that shows four key details:

  • How much does each carrier charge for a one-way domestic flight (economy / first class)
  • How many Capital One miles you'd need to transfer for each one-way award
  • Which domestic partner(s) are bookable through the carrier's program
  • Whether you can book those awards online

*Uses dynamic pricing and is often higher than award charts.

Just keep in mind that these partners have varying transfer times, so check out our guide to Capital One transfer times so you know how long you'll have to wait for your miles to post.

Best transfer options

That's a lot of information to take in. So, which programs are the best options for domestic flights? In no particular order:

British Airways Avios

British Airways' distance-based award chart has some sweet spots for short and medium-haul domestic flights operated by American or Alaska. Specifically, Zone 1 flights in the U.S. (up to 650 miles in distance) price at 7,500 miles in economy or 15,000 miles in business class and Zone 2 flights (up to 1,151 miles in distance) cost just 9,000 miles in economy or 16,500 miles in business class.

This opens up some valuable redemptions like New York-JFK to Miami (MIA) in a lie-flat seat for just 16,500 miles or Chicago O'Hare (ORD) to Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) for only 9,000 miles in economy. Additionally, you can book economy flights to Hawaii from several West Coast cities (less than 3,000 miles) for only 13,000 miles each way .

Etihad Guest

Another excellent option for domestic flights is Etihad Guest , which allows you to book American Airlines award flights for 12,500 miles each way in economy and 25,000 miles each way in first class. Both of these match American's saver award rates through the AAdvantage program, but unfortunately, you'll have to call to book.

Turkish Miles & Smiles

Turkish Miles & Smiles offers hands down the most generous domestic redemption awards on U.S. carriers of any award chart. It charges a flat 7,500 miles each way in economy or 12,500 miles each way in business class for any domestic route. This includes flights to Hawaii, premium transcontinental routes and flights to Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. These rates are a fraction of what United would typically charge for these flights.

Singapore KrisFlyer

Singapore KrisFlyer can be a great option for booking Alaska Airlines flights. Coach flights start at just 7,500 miles each way and top out at 12,500 miles, including Hawaii and Alaska. You will have to call to book, though. And don't bother considering first-class awards, as you'll need to use anywhere from 17,500 to 47,000 miles each way and Alaska doesn't offer lie-flat seats.

The KrisFlyer program also partners with United, but you'll be much better off transferring to and booking with Turkish for these flights.

Decent options

capital one travel change flight date

Some of Capital One's other partner programs have decent award rates. So, under certain circumstances, it could make sense to use these options:

Avianca LifeMiles

If you don't want to book through Turkish, you can also get great award rates on United with Avianca LifeMiles . The LifeMiles award chart divides the continental U.S. into three zones, and if your origin and destination are both in a single zone, you'll redeem just 7,500 miles each way.

In most cases, these will be short-haul United flights , but there are some geographic sweet spots. Here are some examples of flights that require 7,500 miles each way:

  • Colorado to California
  • Florida to Montana
  • Maine to South Carolina

Even better? Despite what the award chart says, Avianca prices some award flights at just 6,500 miles each way. Plus, awards between continental U.S. zones top out at just 12,500 LifeMiles each way in coach and 25,000 miles each way in business, including premium transcontinental routes.

Related: Everything you need to know about Avianca LifeMiles

Air Canada Aeroplan

Alternatively, the Aeroplan program can also be a solid option for United flights, especially since you can easily book partner awards online. Awards start at 6,000 miles each in economy class for flights of 500 miles or less and become more expensive as the distance increases.

While there are no fuel surcharges, Aeroplan does charge a CA$39 ($32) per-person partner booking fee. So you should only consider this option if you run into issues with Avianca LifeMiles or Turkish.

Related: How does Aeroplan's award chart compare to other Star Alliance programs?

Air France-KLM

Flying Blue has a dynamic award formula , so there's really no telling how many miles an award flight on Delta will require. However, they generally start at 11,500 Flying Blue miles each way in economy.

You should be able to book online, but the Flying Blue website is notoriously unreliable and has had issues displaying Delta-operated award flights in the past. If you're having trouble finding availability online, try to use mobile apps to beat Flying Blue restrictions on award searches .

Related: How to fly to Hawaii for just 35,000 miles round-trip

Cathay Pacific Asia Miles

The Asia Miles program offers domestic award flights in economy class on both American and Alaska. You can book Alaska award online, but not American.

Redemption rates vary by route, but you can check the rates on Cathay's website for your specific route. For example, you can fly from New York-JFK to Los Angeles in economy for 15,000 miles or in first for 45,000 miles.

Related: Everything you need to know about Cathay Pacific Asia Miles

Emirates Skywards

With Alaska out of the picture , Emirates' only U.S. partner now is JetBlue. Domestically, you can book coach awards as well as Mint flights. The pricing is based on the route, but there is some good value to be found (see the award chart here ).

For instance, Mint awards on transcontinental routes cost 52,000 miles. By comparison, JetBlue's own TrueBlue program typically charges at least 82,200 TrueBlue points for transcontinental Mint awards. Even better, you can book these awards online.

capital one travel change flight date

Related: You can now book JetBlue Mint with Emirates miles — and it's a good deal

Qantas Frequent Flyer

You can easily book awards on American Airlines using Qantas miles. Award rates start at 8,000 miles each way in economy class and 18,400 miles each way in domestic first class on two-cabin aircraft for flights of 600 miles or less. While those are decent rates, British Airways and Etihad offer slightly better award rates and should have access to the same inventory. So, you'll want to consider those options first.

Poor options

Some of Capital One's airline partners have such unfavorable award charts for their respective U.S. partners that it's difficult to imagine a situation where you should transfer miles to one of them for a domestic award:

When to transfer miles to partners versus when to redeem miles directly for travel

capital one travel change flight date

The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card, Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card, Capital One Spark Miles for Business and Capital One Spark Miles Select for Business let you redeem your miles for one cent each as statement credits towards any travel purchase you've made within the last 90 days. So how do you decide when to transfer miles and when to redeem for recent travel purchases ?

T he information for the Capital One Spark Miles Select for Business has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

At its most basic, before you transfer, make sure the airline miles you'll be using will be worth more than one cent apiece for the award redemption you want. If not, you'll be better off simply redeeming your Capital One miles directly for travel as a statement credit. Here are five factors you should consider.

The easiest way to start looking for a domestic flight is to check your favorite airline's price and search an online travel agency for the lowest prices (or consider Google Flights for a quick snapshot).

As noted above, domestic round-trip economy awards booked through Turkish will require you to transfer 15,000 miles. As a result, if you find any highly-discounted fares for $150 round-trip or less, you should likely just book a paid fare and then redeem miles to offset your recent travel purchases.

Award availability

Next, look for award availability at the lowest mileage levels using the major domestic carriers' websites (American, Delta and United). When you find saver-level award space, you can use the chart above to see how many airline miles it will require.

capital one travel change flight date

Factor in mileage earning and upgrade opportunities

When you redeem Capital One miles for recent travel purchases, you can book tickets the way you usually do.

That means you can earn miles from the flight and get credit towards elite status. If you currently hold elite status, you should still enjoy all of your elite status benefits, including being eligible for upgrades. You may not receive those benefits when you transfer your Capital One miles to an airline and book a partner award. To estimate the value of the miles you could earn, consult TPG's points and miles valuations .

One additional note: if you want to enjoy your free checked-bag benefits on United-operated flights through cards like the United Explorer Card, remember that you have to use your card to purchase the ticket. As a result, flights in this scenario would be a poor choice for redeeming for recent travel, as you'd still need to pay those checked bag fees .

Consider taxes and fees

All frequent-flyer programs will add security fees at a minimum, which will be $5.60 each way. However, Flying Blue has started adding additional surcharges to Delta awards , so remember this when using your miles. Similarly, Aeroplan charges a partner booking fee, albeit a low one of just CA$39 (US$32).

Think about the risks and hassle factors

When you are faced with the choice of redeeming miles for recent travel or transferring miles to frequent-flyer programs, consider the time it could cost you, especially if the airline doesn't offer online booking. You may have to create a new account and spend time calling the airline.

There's also the risk that the airline won't be able to see the award you want or that the award could disappear before you receive your airline miles . For these reasons, you should default to redeem miles toward recent travel when you won't save a lot of miles by transferring them -- especially when you aren't familiar with the frequent-flyer program.

Related: Fly more, spend less: These are some of the best airline awards in the world

Bottom line

Capital One took a significant step forward when it upgraded most transfer partners to a 1:1 transfer tier. After all, this redemption option significantly boosted the value of Capital One miles -- and the value of holding Capital One cards like the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card and Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card.

If you need to book flights within the U.S., Capital One's transfer partners give you various options, some with solid redemption rates. Just be sure to crunch the numbers to ensure you won't get a better value by redeeming miles for recent travel purchases.

Earn Points With Your Loyalty Program

Flights booked through Capital One Travel are counted as paid tickets . This is true whether you use your Capital One miles for a redemption or use cash. Because of this, you’ll be able to earn frequent flyer miles on any flights that you book. Signing up is free and easy — there’s no reason for you to miss out on these miles!

The same can’t be said of hotel programs. Nearly all hotel chains will skip out on benefits if you don’t book your stay directly with the hotel . Not only will you miss out on your perks, but you’ll also lose the ability to earn elite night credits for your stays, which can be a real blow if you’re trying to earn elite status. Keep this in mind when you’re using Capital One Travel for hotel bookings.

Ease of Use

If you’re not a huge points and miles geek, it can make sense for you to book with Capital One Travel. This is because it’s simple; you simply log in, look for the flights/hotels/rental cars that you need, and then book. You won’t have to sift through endless programs trying to find the best rates, and it’s especially easy when you’re looking to redeem your Capital One miles. They’ll always be worth 1 cent each when used for travel via Capital One Travel , which is a solid redemption. It’s not the best, however, as you’ll see later on.

Price Match Guarantee

In a bid for your business, Capital One offers a price match guarantee on all of its hotel bookings . If you find a publicly available price within 24 hours that is better than the one you’ve booked, Capital One will match it.

Capital One also offers price-drop protection for its flights . If the Capital One price prediction tool recommends you purchase a flight and you do, the same tool will automatically keep monitoring the cost of the flight. If prices drop again, you’ll get a refund on some or all of the price difference.

Bottom Line: There are a lot of reasons to book with Capital One Travel, though you’ll want to be wary of limitations that arise from booking with a third party.

United Polaris Boeing 767-300

We value points and miles according to a variety of factors, including how easy they are to use and redeem. Although you can use your Capital One miles for travel on Capital One Travel, there are plenty of other ways they can be redeemed.

The most valuable use of your miles occurs when you transfer them to any one of Capital One’s hotel and airline partners. In these cases, you can get outsized value for every mile. This is why we consider Capital One miles to be worth 1.8 cents each — nearly double the amount you’ll get when redeeming them within Capital One Travel.

You need to be a Capital One cardholder in to access Capital One Travel . Once on the page, you’ll log in to your account. After logging in, you’ll be brought to the portal’s home page:

Capital One homepage

From here, you can choose to book flights, hotels, or rental cars.

Booking a flight through Capital One Travel is fairly intuitive. After you log in and reach the landing page, you’ll want to select Flights in the toolbar up top:

Capital One homepage

This will bring you to the search page for flights. You’ll want to input all your information, including departure airport, destination, and dates of travel:

Capital One flights

Like Google Flights , Capital One Travel will give you an estimation of price within a calendar feature:

Capital One flight calendar

Unlike Google Flights, however, Capital One has partnered with the booking site Hopper to tell you when you should book. You’ll be presented with detailed information regarding price predictions :

Capital One price prediction

As you can see in the screenshot above, you have the option to freeze your price or set a price watch alert. If you’re looking to book immediately, you’ll want to scroll down, where Capital One will give you a list of results:

Capital One flight results

When selecting a flight, Capital One Travel will also give you a breakdown of information and the ability to book economy or first class tickets:

Capital One flight amenities

Once you’ve selected your outbound flight, you’ll pick the return. If booking a one-way, you’ll be taken to the checkout page.

Hot Tip: Capital One’s price drop protection automatically monitors the cost of flights you purchase and refunds you if prices fall.

As is normal with checkout pages, you’ll need to fill in your passenger information and credit card information. You can also select seats and choose whether or not you’d like to redeem miles. Capital One will give you 1 cent per point of value when using your miles through Capital One Travel . While this isn’t terrible, there are much better uses of those miles — such as transferring to a partner and booking a reward seat.

Capital One redeem miles flights

Once you’ve input all your info, you’ll hit Confirm and Book . That’s it!

Bottom Line: Booking flights through Capital One Travel is both intuitive and easy. Plus, you’ll be able to earn frequent flyer points on your booking.

If you’re looking to book a hotel through Capital One Travel, the process is simple. As before, you’ll start by logging into your account. Once you’ve hit Capital One Travel’s landing page, you’ll select Hotels in the top toolbar:

Capital One hotels

You’ll be taken to Capital One’s hotel search bar, where you can put in your travel destination and dates:

Capital One hotel search

Once you select Search Hotels , you’ll be taken to a results page featuring an interactive map:

Capital One hotel results

Along with filtering by rating and price, Capital One offers a variety of ways to narrow down your search:

Capital One hotel filters

As we mentioned above, Capital One Travel offers a hotel price match guarantee , which means you won’t find cheaper prices elsewhere. If you do happen to stumble across one on a publicly available site within 24 hours of booking, you can submit a price match request and, if approved, Capital One Travel will drop the cost down to the rate you’ve found.

Selecting a hotel from the search results will open a new tab where you can alter your information:

Capital One hotel booking

Scrolling down, you’ll be able to select the room type you prefer:

Capital One room type

Once you’ve picked your room, you’ll be taken to the checkout page where you’ll fill out your traveler and payment information. You can also choose to use your Capital One miles for a value of 1 cent per point towards your booking:

Capital One hotel checkout

Hot Tip: Be aware that booking hotels through Capital One Travel counts as a third-party booking — which means you won’t receive any elite status benefits or credit towards earning elite status when booking this way.

Once everything is filled in, you simply need to select Confirm and Book .

Just as with flights and hotels, you’ll log in to your account. From the landing page, you’ll select Car Rentals from the top toolbar:

Capital One rental cars

You’ll be taken to the rental car search page where you can enter your information, including dates of travel and location:

Capital One rental car search

Once you’ve hit Search Cars , you’ll be taken to the results page:

Capital One rental car results

You can choose from a variety of filters, including the rental car company you’ll be booking, what type of car you prefer, and the cancellation policy of your booking. After picking the car you’d like to reserve, you’ll have the chance to review your booking:

Capital One rental car review

If everything is correct, you’ll hit Reserve , which will take you to the checkout page where you can enter driver information and your method of payment:

Capital One rental car checkout

As with hotels and flights, you can apply your Capital One miles to your rental car booking at a rate of 1 cent each. Again, there are better ways to use your miles, which we’ll discuss below.

Hot Tip: Check out our handy guide on how to save money on car rentals , including options with points, upgrades, cash savings, and more!

Is it actually worth it to book through Capital One Travel rather than other sites? How do the prices compare? Let’s take a look.

Here’s a flight from Los Angeles (LAX) to London (LHR) in mid-May 2022:

Capital One LAX flight

Interestingly, Capital One Travel notes that this isn’t the best time to book. The cheapest options available are $715, and they’re all nonstop. However, Google Flights comes back with very different results:

Google Flights LAX flight

Not only does Google suggest that prices are currently low, but it also returns an option that is nearly $200 less than what Capital One Travel is offering . A closer look reveals that although Capital One Travel has the outbound leg available of this cheap flight for $736 roundtrip, it doesn’t offer the same returns. Here’s what’s available from Google:

Google Flights LAX LHR

Meanwhile, here are the options you can get on Capital One:

Capital One LAX LHR

Bottom Line: While Capital One allows you to book flights through its Capital One Travel portal, its prices aren’t always competitive with other offerings. Make sure to check a few other websites for flights to ensure you’re getting the best deal.

So how do hotels on Capital One fare when compared to other booking options? This is especially pertinent as Capital One has its own price guarantee.

Here’s a night at the all-inclusive  Secrets the Vine Cancun in early June from Hotels.com :

Hotels.com Cancun hotel

Booking with Hotels.com will earn you 1 stamp towards a free night stay . After 10 stamps you’ll get a free night, which can be especially valuable when booking costly stays.

And here are the results from Priceline , an online travel agency:

Priceline Cancun hotel

Bookings with both Priceline and Hotels.com can also be stacked with shopping portals . Using Rakuten with Priceline, for example, will earn you 5% back on your booking; this can either come in the form of $25.35 or 2,535 American Express Membership Rewards .

Booking Directly

Here’s how much it costs when booking directly with the hotel:

Secrets hotel Cancun

Secrets the Vine Cancun is a member of AMR Resorts , which was recently purchased by Hyatt. Although you can’t earn or redeem points with the property until later in 2022, Hyatt is offering a promotion for its cardholders for many new all-inclusive properties, including this one. Now through May 15, 2022, eligible cardholders will receive 10 points per $1 spent at these hotels.

This means that booking and paying with your The World of Hyatt Credit Card will earn you 5,070 World of Hyatt points. We value World of Hyatt points at 1.5 cents each, which means you’ll be getting $76.05 worth of points back on this booking.

Capital One Travel

Finally, here’s the rate within Capital One Travel:

Capital One Cancun hotel

With the 3 other sites we compared charging $507, Capital One Travel is a few dollars cheaper. But saving $15 doesn’t match the benefits other options are providing, like Hotels.com’s $200 resort credit.

There is, however, one case where booking via Capital One Travel is your best option. First, you won’t want to use Capital One Travel unless you don’t care about elite status — as we’ve mentioned above — so boutique properties can be a good option to book .

Second, as we mentioned above, those who hold the Capital One Venture X card earn 10 miles per $1 spent on hotels booked through Capital One Travel. In this situation, you’d earn 4,915 Capital One miles on your booking. We value Capital One miles at 1.8 cents each, which means you’ll earn  $88.47 worth of miles . All in, you’ll net $403.53, which wins out compared to most other options.

Rental Cars

How good are rental car prices compared across multiple sites? The results are less exciting. Here’s what a 5-day rental from Los Angeles looks like at Capital One Travel:

Capital One car rental

RentalCars.com offers nearly the same price:

Rentalcars.com car rental

AutoSlash, meanwhile, saves you a full $65 on the cheapest rental car:

Autoslash car rental

Bottom Line: The Capital One Venture X card offers 10 miles per $1 on rental cars booked through Capital One Travel and it comes with some nice car rental insurance coverage too.

Of course, redeeming your miles through Capital One Travel is just one way that they can be used. There is a multitude of uses for those miles.

Transfer to Travel Partners

Nearly always, the best use of your Capital One miles comes from transferring to hotel and airline partners. Capital One has many transfer partners from which to choose:

Hot Tip: Check out our guide on the best ways to redeem Capital One miles for max value .

Cover Travel Purchases

Just as when using your miles at Capital One Travel, Capital One will allow you to redeem your miles for recent travel purchases at a rate of 1 cent each .

Redeem for Cash-back

You can redeem your Capital One miles for cash-back, but this is a terrible use of miles. Capital One will only give you 0.5 cents of value per mile when redeeming to cash.

Get Gift Cards

There are a variety of gift cards available using your Capital One miles, but these still aren’t a great redemption. Your value will vary — and can even be as high as 1 cent per mile , but transferring to other partners will still give you better value.

Shop With Amazon

You can use your miles on a linked Capital One card, which will give you a value of 0.8 cents per mile .

Pay With PayPal

Paying with your Capital One miles through PayPal will net you 1 cent per mile , just the same as redeeming your miles within Capital One Travel.

Bottom Line: You can redeem your Capital One miles in a variety of ways, but only transferring them to hotel and airline partners will grant you more than 1 cent per mile in value.

Capital One Travel is robust — and can be a good option for eligible cardholders who aren’t concerned about elite status. However, you’ll find better value for your miles when transferring to one of Capital One’s many travel partners. Regardless, you can find good deals within the travel portal, and the best price guarantee, combined with price drop protection, can make this portal tempting for many travelers.

What to know about the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program

September 10, 2024 | 3 min read

The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) is a free service for U.S. citizens whenever they leave the country to live, work or play. It can help travelers stay connected and get important information to help them stay safe during their international travel.

Learn how you can register your contact and travel information for your upcoming trip.

What you’ll learn:

The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, or STEP, is a free service for U.S. citizens.

STEP emails can warn you about health, weather, safety and security issues at your destination.

Family at home can also use the information you provide in STEP to try to contact you if there’s an emergency.

  • You can enroll online, by mail or in person at a U.S. embassy or consulate.

Earn 75,000 bonus miles

What is the smart traveler enrollment program (step).

STEP is a free service to help U.S. citizens traveling abroad stay connected and aware of potential emergencies. The State Department’s Bureau of Consular Affairs offers the program.

Participants provide contact and travel information so the embassy can email travel warnings and advisories. STEP can also be used to help people at home stay connected.

Travelers can enroll in STEP online, by mail, or in person at a U.S. embassy or consulate. It might be useful for students studying abroad, expatriates who plan to live or work in another country and people traveling on vacation.

Types of communication from STEP

STEP uses email to send alerts. Advisories are given a 1-4 risk level of a specific situation, which indicates whether you should cancel or consider your trip or take normal or increased precautions.

And you can request to be notified about:

General news, updates and current events

Dangerous weather conditions, such as blizzards, flash floods or extreme temperatures

Natural disasters, such as volcano eruptions, wildfires, tornados, hurricanes, tsunamis or earthquakes

Health issues, such as disease outbreaks or sudden, severe air or water pollution

Civil unrest, such as riots or violent protests

Security issues, such as terrorism, criminal activity or tourist attacks

Evacuation instructions

Benefits of enrolling in STEP

Besides general travel alerts, the embassy can also provide helpful local information. That might include direction if you’re dealing with legal, medical or financial issues. The embassy might also have the names of English-speaking doctors or attorneys.

How to register for STEP

You can register an upcoming trip for STEP, or you can create an account on the STEP website that stores your information. If you travel often, that can make it faster to enroll new trips or update your information.

If you’re traveling with family, there’s an option to list accompanying travelers. Large groups can create an organization or group account.

You can also mail a paper form or fill it out in person at an embassy or consulate.

Key takeaways: STEP

You can sign up for STEP before or during your trip abroad. It can help you stay connected with your family and informed about events that could affect your trip.

To prepare for your trip, you can also read a few tips about using a credit card while outside the U.S . And if you don’t have a credit card, you can learn how Capital One travel credit cards reward you for the way you travel.
