Brazil Visa FAQ’s and How to Get a Brazilian Tourist Visa in 2024 and 2025

Disclosure: This  post is for general information purposes only and each traveler is encouraged to obtain information directly from his/her closest Brazil consulate for up to the minute travel information and requirements.  (this page was last updated on April 9th, 2024 and all information is deemed reliable but is subject to change without notice.)

What is a Visa? – A Visa is an official document or stamp that is placed on the travelers actual passpor t  given them official permission to enter the foreign country.

What are the different types of visas ?   There are generally three types of visas –  Traditional visa   aka “Consular Visa” (where you must obtain a physical stamp on your passport PRIOR to departure via a consulate,  VOA (Visa on Arrival) where the individual obtains the visa stamp/permission on arrival at the actual overseas airport , and E-Visa (where the visa is applied for online prior to the trip and an individual receives the visa via fully electronically via email (generally in pdf format) where they can print and take the visa with them and show to government authorities upon arrival.

What countries require a Brazilian tourist visa? – As a general rule, if  a country requires Brazilians to get a visa to enter then Brazil will also require one for that country’s nationals  to enter Brazil . This is also knowns as Brazil’s “reciprocity” rule.  These rules change  due to political relations with countries, economic changes, the pandemic, and a variety of other circumstances.

Currently,  American, Canadian,  and Australian  passport holders,  DO NOT need for Brazil for entries up to April 9th, 2025. 

Starting on Apr il 10, 2025,   all  American Citizens as well as Canadians and Australians  nationals will once again  REQUIRE a tourist visa for Brazil travel or they will not be allowed into the country.  (the visa requirement has been postponed three times already from October 2023 to January of 2024, to April of 2024 but it is now official and signed into law that visas are NOT required until 2025. Can I obtain my visa at the airport or when I get to Brazil? –  No. The  tourist visa for Brazil for American /Canadian/Australian tourists starting on April 10, 2024 will be an E-VISA which must be obtained PRIOR to departure and will not be a VOA (Visa on Arrival).

Do I need a visa to travel to Brazil if I already have a passport? – If you require a visa for travel, YES. A visa is special permission to enter Brazil granted by the  Brazilian government permitting you to enter Brazil and has nothing to do with the passport itself.

Where/how do I  obtain my Brazil visa? –  If you  require a visa, you may obtain your visa directly at the closest consulate of Brazil to where you live OR through a designated government application portal or official third party in the case of E-Visas. For the current portal used for visa processing for Brazil e-visas  CLICK HERE . It is not known if this portal will be active or another provider will be chosen for 2025.

How long does it take to process a visa? –  Starting in April of 2025, It will take approximately 5 business days to process your electronic tourist visa for Brazil.  We recommend obtaining the visa with as much lead time as possible in case of any errors in your application in which case you would have to re-submit the application.

Can I process my visa at a local post office? – NO. The only entity that can issue a Brazilian Visa is the Brazilian government. Post offices generally are places in the USA where you may be able to obtain a USA PASSPORT but this has nothing to do with a Brazilian tourist visa. Do I have to turn in/send in my actual passport for a Visa?   –  The Brazil 2024 tourist visa will  be electronic for USA/ Canadian and Australian passport holders so it is NOT needed to mail in or turn in your  physical passport.

Can I be denied a Visa? -Yes although the majority of the cases for denials would be due to  incomplete applications and errors filling out the forms. Note that if you are denied an electronic visa you may need a consular visa which is a lot lengthier process so be careful filling out the forms online.

What will the cost of the Visa be?   – The electronic tourist visa for US Citizens to travel to Brazil in 20254 will cost $80USD  payable online via visa or Mastercard.

How long are visas valid for?   – The new electronic Brazil visa will be reportedly valid for 5 years for Canadians and Australians and 10 years for Americans  They are multiple entry with stays of 90 days maximum for each visit.

What if my passport expires before the end of the visa period?   – If you have a valid visa for Brazil and your passport expired but your visa expiration date is good past your passport expiration date, we recommend that you contact your closest consulate and send them a copy of your visa and get verification in in writing from them that the visa is still valid before traveling.

If I am a dual citizen of a country that doesn’t need a visa but a US /Canadian/Australian  citizen,  can I use my 2nd passport to avoid getting a visa?   –  Generally yes! You would check into your flight with your passport from the country that does NOT require a visa for Brazil, arrive in Brazil with that passport, but return to your home country with your home country passport or resident card.

Can TGW process my visa for me? –  TGW Travel Group is NOT a visa processing company so it cannot do so. The only authorities able to grant Brazilian tourist visas are the designated visa processing company in this link here , or any consulate of Brazil. TGW Travel Group has nothing to do with visa issuance and cannot process any visa.

Up to when can I travel visa free to Brazil? –  As long as you arrive before April 9th, 2025 you do NOT need a visa if you hold a passport from the United States, Canada or Australia.   This applies even if you stay after April 9th.   If you enter the country starting April 10th, 2025 onwards you DO need a Brazilian tourist visa prior to departure.

What documentation will be required for the Brazil tourist electronic visa? 

• Passport (signed, valid up to end of your stay in Brazil , 2  free visa pages on the passport book).
• Visa application form (completed online).
• Passport-style photo (2” x 2”, white background).
• E-visa fee payment (US$ 80.90).
• Confirmation of flight reservation (showing entrance into and exit from Brazil).
• Printed bank statement showing transactions for the last 30 days and showing at least US$ 2,000.00 for travel.

Do you have any tips regarding Visa processing ?   –  YES!

• Have necessary documentation ready and in hand prior to beginning your online visa application session.
• Use a desktop PC instead of a mobile device or a tablet.
• Process your visa promptly. Give yourself two months prior at least if possible.  This give you a margin of error in case of any errors in the process or delays in the process.  
• When filling out the visa application forms online, make sure to follow ALL INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY.  Visas can be denied or delayed for failure to complete the forms correctly or not having the correct size of your picture (JPEG) etc. The paperwork and forms are not difficult but you need to follow EXACT INSTRUCTIONS to a tee.  If you are denied an online visa, you may have to get a consular one so please be meticulous when applying to avoid any errors.
•  Be mindful of your arrival date. If you obtain a visa with the wrong arrival date or obtain a visa and specify an arrival date and then decide to arrive earlier than the date on your visa, it will NOT be valid!
• Print Two Copies of Your eVisa: Ensure that you have physical copies of your eVisa for your travel documentation. Having two copies provides a reliable backup in case of unforeseen circumstances.
• Take a Screenshot of your e-visa on your cell phone.  This ensures quick and easy access during your trip, especially when you might not have internet or Wi-Fi.
•   Backup your visa on the cloud:   Safeguard against loss or damage by storing a duplicate of your eVisa in your cloud storage or in your email on the cloud.

The issuance of a visa is a discretionary act of a sovereign State: it can be granted, denied, extended or changed according to national interests. A visa is not a right to enter, but an expectation to be admitted. Depending on the purpose of the visit and on the visitor's nationality, a valid visa is required to enter Brazil. Therefore the application should contain clear indication of the purpose of the trip and represent exactly what the applicant is going to do in the country. 

Regardless if you need or not a visa to enter Brazil, a passport valid for a minimum of six months is required. In addition, the Brazilian Immigration Police ("Departamento de Polícia Federal") may request additional documents, such as:

proof of financial means for the stay (the statement must be stamped on each page at the bank as a proof of the veracity of the information);

roundtrip ticket;

details on the purpose of the stay, such as hotel reservation in the case of a tourism trip;

travel/health insurance.

Visa and passport applications will only be accepted if the applicant has uploaded his/her photo with white background, signature and all required documents when filling the request form available at  https://formulario-mre.serpro.gov.br . After filling out the application form, create an account on the E-Consular system and apply for a visa appointment.

Emirati currency is not easily exchangeable in Brazil, we recommend that travellers have international debit or credit cards and US dollar or Euro currencies.

Children under 12 (twelve) years old are not required to present themselves at the Embassy; their parents or legal guardians can request their visas for them.

VISA REQUIREMENTS BY COUNTRY

If you are going to visit Brazil on tourism or business, please find the country of your nationality to check if you need a visa. Click  here  to check the list.

If you are exempted, please be sure that your passport is valid for more than 6 months. All exemptions are valid for a stay up to 90 days.

GENERAL CONDITIONS

The passport presented at the Embassy with your visa application must be valid for at least another 6 months and must have at least two blank visa pages, in order for the visa to be stamped on it.

Application can be delivered in person or sent by P.R.O. Check the Embassy's location.

There are no emergency fees.

Plan your visa application in advance, as it will take the Embassy at least 5 business days to process it.

A visa shall be denied to any foreign citizen who, when submitting his/her application, behaves in an aggressive, insulting or disrespectful way.

Visa fees are not refundable.

As of May 2010, Brazil does not require a yellow fever International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis for entering the country. However, yellow fever vaccination is recommended for travelers.  Also keep in mind that the vaccine should be taken at least 10 days prior to departure.

Important : At the day of application, all the documents must be submitted. The application will not be accepted if any document is missing. After that, we will inform the day when the visa can be collected.

Whenever there is a doubt on the purpose of the trip or the identity of the applicant, one may be required to be interviewed by a consular officer, who may request additional documents.

Note: if your Brazilian visa is still valid and your passport expires, the Brazilian visa still can be used, if presented, in Brazil, alongside a new valid passport from the same country that issued the old passport.

WAITING TIME

After you apply on E-Consular, our team will analyze your application in 5 business days. After validation of your ocuments, you will be able to schedule an appointment. The system only allows scheduling within the following 45 days. If all slots are already filled, you must make another attempt on the following day. After your personal interview appointment, there is a minimum of 5 business days to issue your visa (in case it is authorized). The issuance of a visa for nationalites which require clearance from Brazil can take up to 30 days.

THE VISA FORM MUST BE COMPLETED ON THE FOLLOWING WEBPAGE:  https://formulario-mre.serpro.gov.br . Fill in the form. Click "SEND" to receive your processing number and receipt. Print the receipt. Attach one passport-size photograph (please do not staple the photo; glue it, if possible). Sign the receipt. For minors (under 18 years), the receipt must be signed by both parents. When filling in the application form, it is mandatory to write your parents’ full name, as stated on their passports, without any abbreviations or omissions.

SCHEDULING YOUR INTERVIEW APPOINTMENT

After completing your application form, you must create an account on our E-Consular system and apply for an appointment for your personal interview. You must submit the required documents and wait for validation. After our team validates your request, you will receive an e-mail to schedule a date for your interview. After the personal interview, your documents will be ready for collection in 5 business days (this deadline may change according to your nationality and purpose of visit). I am having difficulty uploading the photo and the signature on the electronic application form. I can of course open the JPEG files on my drive, but how do I place these in the form?

“I was finally able to print the visa application by switching browsers from Firefox to google chrome. The website is very finicky. I was not able to retrieve my application code until I switched browsers. Using Safari/Google would not give me the crop button when uploading my picture. The key learning is to continue to switch browsers when you get stuck in the application process.”

I can offer some help. I’m the poster Monte references. If you don’t see a crop button, need to change browsers. I spent hours on this till I figured it out. Firefox or Google Chrome seem to work best. If you have trouble printing receipt/recovering application code - change browsers. It took one week for processing at the Atlanta consulate. Got my visa this week. Feel free to message me.

Your suggestion worked. It is also important to use a high quality scanner with pixel control. Simply relying on a scan with 300 dpi will not work.

Apply for a Brazil Visa Directly Through the Government Website

To apply for a visa to Brazil as an Indian, you'll need to navigate through a series of steps. Below is a structured guide to help you through the entire process:

Step 1: Access the Visa Application Website

• Visit Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs website. 
• Select ‘Foreign Citizen.’ 
• Click on ‘Visa’.

Step 2: Complete the Application Form

Complete the visa application form with all required information. Save and submit it.

Step 3: Download the Receipt

After you submit your application, a receipt is generated. Print and sign this receipt.

Step 4: Send the Documents to the Brazilian Embassy/Consulate via email or courier

Send the receipt, the completed visa application form, and other required documents (check the section below for detailed documentation) to the Brazilian Consulate where your visa application will be processed. This must be done within 180 days from the date the receipt is generated. 

Even if you have uploaded your photograph on the visa application form, do not forget to paste a physical copy on the visa application form.

You can also send your online visa application form (RER), filled, signed, and with a passport photo attached to it, by email to [email protected] .

Step 5: Pay the Visa Fee at the Consulate

After checking all the information submitted by you, the Consular Agent will collect the visa fee from you. 

Step 6: Receive Your Visa

After the Embassy processes your visa application and finds everything in order it will grant you your visa. The Brazil tourist visa processing time can vary, so it’s advisable to apply well in advance of your planned travel date.

Mandatory Documents

Supporting documents:.

• General guidelines: The photograph must be taken from the front, against a white background. No reflections, shadows, or glasses are allowed. The dimension of the photo must be 35mm x 40mm.
• Face: Face and shoulders must be centred on the camera. The person must be looking right into the camera. The face should have a neutral expression with the eyes open and visible.
• Eyewear: If you wear glasses, the lenses may not reflect the ambient light or the camera. Dark glasses or non prescription glasses with tinted lenses, or thick frames, are not acceptable in the photograph.
• Headwear: Headgear or hats are also not allowed, except when used for religious reasons. They can not, however, prevent a perfect view of the face of the applicant.
• For Children: Children should not be photographed with toys, pacifiers, or hands of people holding them.

The processing time for a Brazil visa for Indian nationals typically ranges from 5 to 15 working days. However, the exact time can vary depending on the type of visa, the specific requirements of the local Brazilian consulate, and the individual's circumstances. It's advisable to apply well in advance of the intended travel date to accommodate any potential delays.

The visa fee is non-refundable. The only method of payment accepted by the Embassy of Brazil is a non-refundable identified bank transfer or deposit in the RBL bank account. The applicant will receive the details once the process is analysed and ready to be processed.

Please note that it is not enough that your name appears on the transaction receipt. Your name must show up in the Embassy's bank account. To ensure this, make the bank transfer directly from your personal bank account and not from a third party's account. 

Yes, Indian nationals can extend their Brazil tourist visas. They can apply for an extension to stay an additional 90 days beyond the initial period granted, totaling up to 180 days within a twelve-month period. However, extensions are not automatic and must be requested at the nearest Brazilian Federal Police office before the current visa expires.

• Declaração de Não-Cidadania signed by Brazilian parents (declaring that the applicant is not a Brazilian citizen, i.e., does not possess a Brazilian Birth Certificate)
• passport or photo ID of both parents of a minor applicant (copy)*

*If only one parent is listed on the minor's birth certificate, only that parent's signature is necessary. If one parent has sole custody over a minor applicant, it is necessary to present a notarized copy of the court order awarding sole custody and exclusive parental rights. In case of one parent's death, a death certificate is required.

This visa falls under the  Brazil Visit Visa  (VIVIS) category.

Not all foreign nationals require a Brazil transit visa to move through Brazilian territory. Some of the visa-exempt countries include;

• EU, EEA, and EFTA countries
• all 12 sovereign South American countries
• most of North America,
• countries in the Balkan peninsula of Europe
• South Korea
• the United Kingdom
• the Philippines, etc. 

Citizens of Brazil visa-exempt countries only need their national passports to enter Brazil. However, the 12 sovereign countries in South America can use any valid ID. Some of these countries are allowed to stay up to 30, 60, or 90 days, depending on Brazil’s travel agreement with the said countries.

There are certain conditions under which you need a Brazil transit visa. Firstly, those from visa-exempt countries do not need a transit visa to travel through Brazilian territory. However, if you aren’t from visa-exempt countries, you might be able to transit through Brazil without a visa, but the following conditions apply;

You will also provide a bank statement (three months long, at least) proving you have the necessary means to be in Brazil for your transit period.

#6. Additional Requirements

The parents must provide a signed consent letter if the visa applicant is a minor. They must also sign the visa form receipt page before the embassy will consider it. Finally, both parents will accompany the minor to make the application. If one of them is absent, they will sign the form before a notary public and attach a copy of their ID for verification.

Applying for a Brazil transit visa is a hybrid process. That is, there are both online and offline aspects to it. Begin by gathering all the required documents for a Brazil transit visa. Afterward, here is an outline of the steps to take to apply for and obtain your Brazil transit visa;

• Filling Out the Form:  The first thing you need to do while applying for a Brazil transit visa is to fill out the form online. Ensure you answer all the questions clearly and honestly. Scan and upload all the necessary documents for the application, including a passport photograph of the right dimensions and specifications. Print the application form receipt (RER) and sign it when this is done. The portal will send you a confirmation number.
• Contact the Embassy:  Contact the Brazilian embassy, consulate, or visa application center in your country and create an appointment with them. Confirm how they accept visa fee payments, as visa fees usually differ by embassy/consulate.

Unlike regular Brazil visas, the Brazil transit visa has a concise processing time. Under normal circumstances, it should take no more than five (5) working days. However, you can start processing it from 15 days to a month before you intend to travel. This will, at least, cover any possible delays.
